5 out of 5 stars Student review.......2006-10-19

My writing has improved 200% because of the information presented in this book. I am a junior marketing major at Northern Illinois University. This text is enjoyable to read with great visuals and equally interesting real- world examples. I will definitely keep this book. The skills learned from this book will guide me in my career for years to come. Thank you for writing this book and to my professor for choosing this book.

5 out of 5 stars BUSINESS WRITING INSTRUCTION TAKES QUANTUM LEAP!.......2004-10-01

As a college business communication instructor and corporate writing consultant of 20+ years, I feel my career is about to take a quantum leap forward with my discovery of this magnificent compendium of materials. Mary Ellen Guffey has done ALL the hard work! Juicy, readable text: done. Riveting "inside" information on cool corporations: done. Web-based support? Manuals? PowerPoints? Videos? Done. Fresh writing prompts, some packaged with the research already done? Done. With my old text, I've been drowning in an attempt to supplement and update and enrich the dated material enough to keep it relevant and arresting. Now I'm finding that I have plenty of time to interact with students over their own writing and presentations. I've always felt one-on-one and small-group interaction to be a huge part of my mission as a classroom teacher. Thanks to Mary Ellen Guffey, I'm able to do more of it, while spending less time overall on take-home work. Thank you, Mary Ellen, from the trenches--not just for a marvelous tool, but for a whole toolbox full of them.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for the Classroom!.......2004-09-27

I am an instructor at a business college, and this textbook (along with the accompanying website for students) proved to be wonderful for use in the classroom. The chapters were lively (even for a four-hour lecture class!) and provided real-world details and examples. The website accompanying the textbook has plenty of extra information for classroom use, as well as activities that students can do to review chapters and test their grammar skills.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book for College Students.......2004-09-23

Business Communication: Process and Product has been the best textbook I have worked with. Everything is presented in a clear and reader-friendly manner. Of all the books I have had to purchase for my courses, this was well worth the investment. Even though I recently earned my degree, and am no longer taking classes, I am still benefiting from owning this book.

5 out of 5 stars BC:PP is an instructor's dream!.......2004-09-22

I teach an entry level MBA class that focuses on Leadership and Communication. Previously, the text for this class was average to poor. I dreaded using it. Starting this semester, we're using Mary Ellen Guffey's Business Communication: Process and Product text. It's a dream! It's a joy as an instructor to have an academic text such as BC:PP that is (a) very applicable to real-world business situations, (b) easy and fun to read, and (c) filled with tons of great ideas for class and homework assignments. In addition, instructors can request support materials such as video, PowerPoint chapter reviews, chapter tests, etc. that save a TON of time and effort! I am truly enjoying using this book, as are my students. I'd HIGHLY recommend it for any undergrad or graduate level communication course!

    Book Description

Providing structured self-teaching guidance, this hands-on workbook presents a variety of exercises and sample test questions that review chapter concepts and key terms. Totally revised, the Study Guide also helps students enrich their vocabularies, master frequently misspelled words, and develop language competency with bonus C.L.U.E. exercises. The Study Guide presents application exercises for all of the writing chapters in the text. Each application exercise includes special tutoring tools to help students complete the activity effectively but independently. Nearly all exercises are self-checked so that students receive immediate feedback. The Study Guide is especially helpful for students with weak language skills and for short-term, evening, or distance-learning classes. Its question-oriented format ensures better student performance on chapter tests.

4 out of 5 stars Good text but there is a better, less expensive one.......2007-01-04

Business Communication: Process & Product is an excellent but very expensive book. It is a self-contained system for teaching business communications to students with step-by-step instructions, lesson plans, overheads, PowerPoint presentations, assignements, and assessments. Students will learn how to develop effective memos, e-mails, business letters, reports, proposals, and resumes. They will also be given pointers for better oral presentations and interview techniques. Ellen Guffey produces a similiar book called Essentials of Business Communications. It has a soft cover, basically the same information and teacher/student support, and sells for $45 less. It contains more reference to real company situations and humorus cartoons for increased reader interest. In my opinion, this book is the better option of the two.

5 out of 5 stars Finally---a book that explains what Project Managers do!.......2006-09-24

This book is absolutely a must-read for any Project Manager! More importantly, this book can easily apply to so many other fields. It is simply written, easy to follow, and the analogies are great! The whole concept of Project Management can be projected onto any other sector for people other than IT engineers (Like Me!!!). I love that anyone (ex orchestra conductor/physician/attorney/chef/pilot etc) can pick up this book and apply it to their profession. I think this novella is a great read for the small business owner for ideas and inspiration! I finally understand what Project Management entails!
As an aside, I also like the catchy front cover...

The authors' conversational style engages students in the writing process and encourages hands-on application. For anyone who needs to compose written presentations—and especially those who have no formal training in doing so.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best tech writing intro book that I have found.......2006-12-13

I am taking tech writing classes now. Our textbook was terrible. I searched everywhere for good resources and this book was the winner by far. It is a very useful how-to-do-it book. I emphatically recommend this book for anyone in a tech writing role--as a student or at work.

3 out of 5 stars Technical Writing : Process and Product (5th Edition).......2006-06-02

This book contains plenty of good information on the process of technical writing. It is however very difficult to read, because of the only style is that it is constantly varying. The authors should take some of their own advice in any future editions.

5 out of 5 stars Technically very good.......2005-10-18

We use this text by Gerson and Gerson for the technical writing class at the community college where I work. It is an incredibly useful book, particularly for those who are beginning their college careers, and for those who are going into technical fields that require clarity and precision.

Some of the outstanding features of this text include the following:

    * Technology tips, providing useful instruction on basic computer literacy
    * Techlinks, with updated online material and resources
    * Writing at Work Case Studies, showing real-world examples of the ideas being presented
    * Before/After Examples, which shows the value of revision
    * Sportlights, similiar to the Writing at Work, again shows real-life applications of how business uses technical writing
    * Checklists, for ease of remembering and following through on all aspects of the material presented
    * Margin Call-Outs, sort of like pull-quotes that highlight particular points of interest in the documents being examined
    * Web Workshops and a Companion Website

The units in this book include sections on correspondence (memos, email, letters, including cover letters in trying to find a job), technical publications (fliers, brochures, newsletters, etc.), electronic communications (websites and online help), report writing (MLA and APA styles are presented, as well as methods of research), and a handy handbook of grammar aids as the final section, to help with punctuation, spelling, mechanics and other items of grammatical interest.

There is also a section on oral communication - while this is not a speech textbook, so much of one's business image comes from the way one presents himself or herself orally, on the telephone, in presentations, in interviews, and in everyday conversation. The Gersons also provide some information on using PowerPoint and other visual aids in effective presentations.

This is a great textbook, useful for classroom settings as well as individual study and reference. The layout is visually interesting and well-formatted, We use it in the Tutoring Center of my college in addition to the technical writing course offered on campus, as most classes on campus have an element of writing.

5 out of 5 stars Useful and valuable ...........2005-02-07

Terrific, easily readable, and highly recommended for tech writers and those learning the craft, as well as for those corporate staff who will work with tech writers.

Liked the parts on short reports, long reports, grammar, punctuation, research, graphics, oral presentations, instructions, technical description, and objectives.

Did not like the wasted political-correctness (PC) ink devoted to "sexist language," which was unnecessary and does not fit in with the value of the other material in this book. That kind of condescending verbiage detracts from an otherwise superb and useful text.

    Still valuable for most readers.

    Book Description

Many people never engage in formal debate, but argumentation is a naturally occurring dimension of most relationships. The authors, embracing a narrative approach to arguing, clearly demonstrate the role that arguments play in understanding complex issues, forming opinions, shaping discussions, and resolving disagreements. The first part of this highly useful text introduces students to the component areas and principles of argumentation; the second part discusses the unique traits of argumentation in specialized settings. Chapters include complete lists of key terms and stimulating activities.

    1 out of 5 stars Time's Up.......2005-10-02

I purchased "Arguments and Arguing: The Products and Process of Human Decision Making, Second Edition" on Aug. 31st 2005. When I chose this book it was solely because its delivery date was 3-5days. Needless to say the book did not come into my possession until Sep.29th 2005. This delay reflected in my work as my time to prepare for college courses diminished. I am now stuck with a book I no longer need of which I payed full price. I am very unhappy with the level of accountability this web site has demonstrated. I demand compensation.
