Customer Reviews:
Helpful and Insightful, format could use work........2007-06-22
I found the book to be very helpful for negotiating in all aspects of life. The book is written by a father/daughter team who wrote more from personal experience and interviews than research. I found their style to be more insightful. The format is a little hard to follow, the book does not break down the most important points within chapters or key concepts for reference. Some of the very best information is buried in the text, if it were bolded or pulled out as a key concept it would stand out to the reader.
A Woman's Guide to Successful Negotiating: How to Convince, Collaborate, & Create Your Way to Agreement.......2006-09-07
Practical and Insightful
This is one of the best books on the topic of negotiating for women that I have seen. Since this book was written a number of "academic" books that tell you why women "don't ask" have come out but this book gives practical and useful advice from a father/daughter team on how you can negotiate successfully in any situation. If you want to actually become a better negotiator this book is for you. I highly recommend this book to all women. It was by far, the best book on negotiating that I have ever read.
Okay, but much better negotiating books out there........2006-07-12
This book has a lot of suggestions for how women can be more effective negotiators. However, if you're looking for a book to read I found Women Don't Ask by Linda Babcock to be much more insightful and a much better read.
This book is written by a man and his daughter and some parts of it come off as a bit patronizing. There are a number of instances when the daughter recounts anecdotes about how her father taught her negotiating skills that somehow just bothered me.
Women!! Buy this book. Men - you'd benefit too........2006-05-06
You'll find practical advise in clear and direct language. Highly recommended. Don't wait to read this book - if you want to stay yourself AND get what you want out of life. As quoted on page 54: "Human nature will not change" (Abraham Lincoln). Learn how to change your negotiating style, or adopt one in the first place. Wonderfully simple presentation of "Active Listening".
A woman's Manual for assertiveness training.......2005-09-19
I am sending my marked-up copy to my daughter who will be graduating from business school in the spring. Every chapter offers up a solution to negotiate a favorable outcome to get that better deal either in negotiating a job, buying a home, car or handling complex relationship issues. I wish I had read this book a decade ago! A male friend recommended it several years ago and I recently ordered it through you.

Radical Collaboration: 5 Skills to Overcome Defensiveness and ..........2007-08-16
It's a good book.
I recommend it to anyone who needs to build better relationships with their co-worker, managers, and or spouse.
Great concept but lenghty and overly simple book.......2007-01-05
The theory behind the book is great and certainly works, however the book in itself is highly disappointing due to great lenghts to go over basic concepts with fake cute-ish examples and practical exercises that do not really provide a plus.
It really seems to dumb down every detail to fill the standard 250 pages but would be much better in 20 good pages.
Concept and theory explained in the book: 4.5/5
Reading experience : 1/5
HELPFUL.......2006-06-06
Discovering the nature of defensiveness and "button pushing" was invaluable for me personally and for being able to now see it in others. I just loved Chapt. 2: "Hey, Buzz Off ... I Am Not Defensive!"
Quoting:
"Defensiveness is a poison pill to good relationships. In conflict, defensiveness is like blood in the water to a shark. A little here, a little there, and in no time the situation has degenerated into a feeding frenzy."
"Defensiveness is always based on fear."
"Defensiveness does not defend us from others. It arises to protect from experiencing our own uncomfortable feelings. The prescription for dealing with your own defensiveness is to let yourself experience those feelings. Do not avoid them."
"Defensiveness provides only temporary relief. It's like covering dog poop with whipped cream. It may look good and smell better for a short time, but it doesn't deal with the underlying issue or clean up the mess."
"If you think of your childhood as an eighteen-year-long hypnotic induction, you'll get a better idea of how behaviors that were helpful to us as children may have taken on a life of their own and my not be helpful to us as adults."
"Defensiveness distorts our reality, causing us to spend more energy on self-preservation that on problem solving."
This was great, too:
"The difference between a small annoyance and a button is like the difference between Teflon and Velcro. It is slips off you like Teflon, it is not a button getting pushed. If, however, the incident sticks in your throat, heart or gut like Velcro, then you've probably got some unresolved fears or pain that is a button waiting to be triggered."
The authors say that when buttons get pushed, people typically get dumber, rather than smarter. "By our informal calculations, there is about a twenty-point drop in IQ."
Because of this book, now when I feel my anger rising from what someone else is saying, I tell myself, "Hey, is this defensiveness? If so, am I going to let myself get dumber or try instead to see why the button pushing is making me react poorly?"
The Secret Behind Collaboration.......2005-05-19
"As a management consultant the most important thing is to be deeply grounded in the concepts I use in the client environment. To understand the background, the deep meaning of a concept, the theory, the research, and framework connections to other theories is critical.
In Radical Collaboration I find theory, research, exercises, relevant experience from the authors, and connections to other theories integrated as a whole. The authors reflect their philosophy in each chapter by being open and sharing their own experiences, examples and struggles. They successfully create an atmosphere of curiosity where the reader is invited to explore and to make choices and find their own path to self awareness. Radical Collaboration gives me a pedagogical structure for my own understanding and better tools/exercises with clients.
This book will be an eye opener for many people around the world who want to increase their effectiveness in professional relations as well as their effectiveness in all relations. People who are not content with mediocre communication and relations will find great pleasure in the book. Radical Collaboration will be a great experience for newcomers as well as for experienced consultants."
an essential lifeskill.......2005-04-06
As a mediator and conflict resolution coach, I regularly come face to face with people's fear of conflict. This book reduces the feeling of risk by keeping the focus on the positive problem solving required to get what you need while respecting the dignity of family, friends, customers or colleagues.
It captures everything my clients pay me for at a fraction of the price. However hard you try to ignore it, everyone has some issue with someone in their life, this book will immediately help you understand, take baby steps and move toward the solution that will make for a happier relationship.

Book Description
Here's the ultimate working handbook of negotiating, written with humour, irreverence, and simplicity by a superstar negotiator and beloved negotiating coach.
How to get the best deal every time!
Negotiate to Win is a shot of double espresso for a tired publishing category. Unlike most other negotiating books, it is written by the consummate practitioner, an internationally admired negotiating superstar who loves to communicate and teach, who is passionate about negotiating in every aspect of life, and wickedly clever about our American reluctance to negotiate and how to overcome it. Negotiate to Win has one goal––to immediately and meaningfully improve readers' negotiating skills. It delivers its message in clear, straightforward steps and lively, conversational language. Jim Thomas knows just the right images, details, examples, and anecdotes to drive home his points.
Negotiate to Win is fun to read. The author's lively, irreverent, and warm humour energizes every page, and inspires readers to learn and remember its principles. Negotiate to Win is reader–friendly, combining a pithy overview of the cultural and business realities of negotiating, Thomas' 21 rules of successful negotiating, scenarios for getting the best deal in different everyday situations, and a list of Thomas' Truisms of negotiating wisdom.
Negotiate to Win is comprehensive, but it doesn't waste the reader's time with lengthy theoretical discussions. Its mission is to extract the small handful of techniques that actually work from the vast, weedy thicket of negotiating bromides, clichés, theories, and folklore, and to make those techniques intelligible and useful to the reader. The book drives home the importance of reaching long–lasting mutually beneficial solutions for the negotiator and her counterpart.

Customer Reviews:
A High Quality Book.......2007-01-08
According to Kurt Lewin, "There is nothing as practical as a good theory". This is an apt comment in reference to Jim Thomas's book "Negotiate to Win: The 21 Rules for Successful Negotiating". The author methodically and clearly explained his 21 rules for successful negotiations in a readable and humorous manner, in a way that readers can easily implement them.
Jim Thomas stresses the need for win-win negotiations and how to achieve them. When carrying out effective negotiations is spelled out as clearly and cogently as they are in this book, their application to the complex world of negotiations becomes self-evident. The author does a good job of presenting the negotiation process in an easy to read and understand manner that is both useful and practical to all those that are interested in achieving successful and effective negotiations. Novices will be provided a path whilst the seasoned practitioners will find affirmation.
While the book is an excellent guide for people involved in negotiations in the corporate world, it is also a valuable resource in the home and other scenarios.
Great Book easy and fun to read.......2006-12-03
Unlike Herb Cohen's book "Negotiate This" Negotiate to Win: The 21 Rules for Successful Negotiating will teach tricks of the trade from page one. This book will lay out how to start the negotiation, how to react to first offers, how to get to a great postion to counteroffer, and finally how to realize when someone is at the bottom line. It is easy to understand and fun to read. The tips and the practices can be used in real life scenarios from day one and incorporated into negotiations immediately, even with no practice. The rules will help in every scenario and show how the other side may react to concessions, counteroffers, nibbles and krunches. I highly recommend this book to anyone it is the best book on negiations I have read.
A very handy and usable guide to negotiating.......2006-09-04
Many of the tips in the book sound familiar from the other books on negotiating I've read. However, the author here does a good job in making a very readable guide as well as does a good job in explaining why the tip works. He also highlights particular pitfalls that await the unwary.
The author mentions early on that he is trying to add some humor into the work and apologizes, in advance, if we find it offensive. Nothing really stood out as offensive, but some jokes don't seem to fit with the principle he was explaining.
The tips are easy to remember, but as with all skills, the reader needs to practice these. The book is more than clear in explaining what and how to do it. I plan on using some of these myself.
The author points out that the bottom line is sometimes the bottom line. I never really thought about this, but it fits with the notion of win-win negotiating. We have to remember that most of our negotiations have an ongoing relationship component.
The back provides some tips on negotiating for a car or home. These are the most common negotiations we get into.
I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to brush up their negotiating skills. This is a skill that will help you at work or at home.
Negotiate to Win.......2006-05-23
I bought the book because I was scheduled to go to a seminar of the same name.... I reluctantly started it thinking I was going to have to choke down a couple pages a day. Much to my surprise, I LOVED it! The content is very practical and usable...and.... the manner in which Jim shares the message is not only entertaining, but downright funny. Highly recommend the book....as well as the seminar.
Witty and smart.......2005-12-14
Jim Thomas is an intelligent and funny man. Just read this book to see. His approach to negotiating is invigorating and principled. If you follow his rules, you should find yourself rewarded with good deals without humiliating the other person. If you walk away with nothing else from this book, take this: Americans are some of the worst negotiators in the world, so you are immediately one leg up on everyone else.

Concise and Effective.......2007-03-11
This book very clearly and directly covers most negotitation techniques. It's an easy read that should help both sales professionals and purchasing agents. After reading this book, I was able to identify when tactics were being used on me and it armed me with effective countermeasures. I'm positive that this book helped me put bigger and more profitable deals together than I would have without having read it.
Read this book and level the playing field!.......2003-11-18
I recently took on a project to read the 4 or 5 negotiating books that I had accumulated over the years. Of all of the books that I read--Negotiating to Close was the only one specifically written with the salesperson in mind. Over the years it has become increasingly clear to me that buyers are employing skills and technology to try to win the best values for their companies. Negotiate to Close helps level that playing field. Knowing the technology of selling isn't enough--you also need to know the technology of making a successful deal.
There was some excellent information here that didn't appear in any of the other negotiating books. For example--his explanation of how the Good Cop/Bad Cop technique can be used to get you to accept a bad deal from the good cop--was an eye opener.
Gary Karrass teaches negotiating from the perspective of someone who has clearly "carried a bag". I could go on and on--bottom line--if you sell--read and use this book.
Great Book for Sales People.......2001-04-22
I have been working on a sales job for almost 12 years but reading Mr. Karrass' book gave me a totally different perspective to the way I do business with my customers. The book covers all important topics for people working on sales that have to negotiate with large accounts. This book should be the background for everyone that decides to start working on a sales job, since it helps you to uncover your power and improve your performance when dealing with customers.
This will change the way you communicate with everyone.......1999-06-07
When you speak you want to get your point across. Karrass in an easy reading style sets out those rules of communication. If you know the rules you can have fun and respect when someone says "I saw it cheaper down the street" or "I will wash the dishes tomorrow".
This book is not just for the salesperson. The book is for everyone who wants to negotiate.
A great book; it really helped me........1997-10-09
This is a very easy to read book. I've applied the techniques and principles in the book with great success. I highly recommend it!

Book Description
Business organizations rarely become extinct due to labor negotiations, but high-profile labor problems can generate serious temporary harm and enormous, unnecessary, largely self-inflicted distraction.
The critical question to ask everyone constantly -- the CEO to the negotiators -- is, "Does what we are doing, saying, or planning, or what we are planning to do and say, get us quickly, directly, and honorably to a contract?" If the answer is anything other than an unqualified "yes!" -- stop doing, stop talking, stop planning, and get the goal back in focus and the process back on track. In this monograph Jim Lukaszewski offers 10 strategies to help you focus on the goal of getting a contract by using principled, honorable communication.
Successful negotiations boil down to clearly identifying your true goals. Goals that involve punishment, hitting back, and testosterosis are weak, defensive, and costly. Leave these behaviors to the zealots and those who don't have a serious interest in peace or your future. Wage peace and healing from the start.
Customer Reviews:
Mislead by a title.......2002-12-03
Don't be fooled by the title of this piece. [It is called a book] in actuality it's a 4 1/2-page report on general negotiating strategies any management 101 student would know. I made the mistake of not investigating this piece more thoroughly before I purchased it. Don't fall into the same trap.
