You Don't Need a Title--GREAT LEADERSHIP!.......2007-10-22
If you have read the FRED FACTOR, this is a great follow up. (If you haven't, you need to!) This book helps identify the critical components of leadership in everyday life. It clarifies the obvious and reinforces the reality of how so many great leaders never even know they are leading! This book is a great book to give to those folks--teachers, co workers, friends--to acknowledge what you have seen and to encourage them to continue on! It is a quick read but very poignant.
One of the best books ever written on leadership.......2007-09-25
This books definitely defies the myth that true leaders are born leaders. The author uses examples of stories and excellent quotes to explain principles of leadership in a very efficient manner. I am quite sure that I can be a true leader if I follow the advice given by Mark Sanborn in his book. In addition, the book is concise and straight to the point which makes it quite appealing to the reader. Overall, this book is a must to the collection of a true leader.
Great Little Book.......2007-08-06
I recently started a new job and was looking for a book to build a two-day leadership offsite around. I found this little gem in an airport bookstore, read it on the plane, and knew it was the one. The contents perfectly mesh with my theory of leadership and the types of behaviors I expect. It's a fast read, and is practical and inspirational without being sappy.
I bought a copy (via Amazon, of course!) for my each of my management staff and used the 6 leadership principles as the framework for the first day of the offsite. It was a huge hit. I have since bought copies for every employee in the group, as they all expressed interest. We are having a group meeting in a few months (we are in several locations) and a review and discussion session centered around this book will be a must on the agenda!
Good treatment of leadership ideas.......2007-07-22
While there's nothing particularly new in this book, Sanborn does a good job of making leadership something personal. A great book to get for employees.
You Don't Need A Title To Be A Leader.......2007-06-11
A well written book. Easy to read and very positive and energizing. Will be a treasure for my family.

Creating civic will by engaging citizens on the toughest public problems helps break legislative and bureaucratic gridlock and restores trust in public institutions. This book shows you how to do it.
--The Honorable Federico Pena, U.S. Secretary of Transportation

Drawing on their extensive research, as well as on the advice and guidance of the leading scholars and practitioners in the field, David Chrislip and Carl Larson show how elected officials and other civic leaders can generate the civic will to break through legislative and bureaucratic gridlock, deal with complex issues, and engage frustrated and angry citizens. They also describe how to design, initiate, and sustain a constructive, collaborative process. This groundbreaking book provides insight and answers to the major challenges facing communities today.
Book Description
"Nanus and Dobbs have written a seminal book about a long-neglected and key area of American life: the leadership of not-for-profits.... It's a first and should be read by all those concerned about not-for-profits: board members most especially, but volunteers, executives, benefactors, and academics as well."
--Warren Bennis, University Professor, Marshall School of Business, University of Southern California, and coauthor of Organizing Genius
"These authors have made a remarkable contribution to social sector nonprofit leadership. It's a valuable resource by two great authorities on a critical need."
--Frances Hesselbein, chairman of the board, The Peter F. Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management
"If there's one thing that today's nonprofit sector needs more than anything else, it's leadership.... Burt Nanus and Stephen Dobbs illustrate the qualities that do 'make a difference' by telling real-life stories of exceptional nonprofit leaders--few of them household names--and examining the lessons these men and women learned the hard way."
--Dorothy S. Ridings, president and CEO, Council on Foundations
There are many books on leadership, but few that focus specifically on the unique role of nonprofit executives. For the CEOs and directors of more than one million U.S. social sector organizations--as well as those who aspire to these positions--best-selling author Burt Nanus and colleague Stephen M. Dobbs have written the first comprehensive and authoritative book on nonprofit leadership.
The authors show how leaders build successful nonprofit organizations by developing key relationships to improve their performance and move them toward a greater good--such as much higher levels of service to their clients and community. They describe the six key roles that effective leaders must play--Visionary, Strategist, Change Agent, Coach, Politician, and Fundraiser--and present inspiring examples of how their actions in these roles have been crucial to the success of large and small nonprofits flourishing across the nation. Leaders Who Make a Difference offers proven lessons on strategy, team building, fundraising, advocacy, board relations, and much more. Grounded in real-world practice, the book champions the potential of all nonprofit leaders to greatly improve the performance of their organizations and realize their visions of better communities.

A must read for a new Exec.......2007-05-14
This is a great how to book in getting started in a new non-profit. Wish I would have had it earlier in my career.
A Strong Resource for University Classroom Use .......2005-07-29
If you're after a lot of theoretical hocus pocus, please look elsewhere. If you aspire to revel in charts and graphs, this book isn't for you. But if, by chance, you are looking for a straightforward, concise, and easy-to-digest discussion of what leaders in nonprofits (the most effective ones) actually do, I encourage you to read this book. Moreover, if you are an educator looking for a text-based catalyst for classroom discussion about nonprofit leadership, Leaders Who Make a Difference should be on your short list for consideration.
The text is well organized, with each concept building on the next. There is no wheel reinvention here, with the authors instead boiling down some of the more prescient literature to a smattering of leadership roles, offering a listing of the more extensive works for the reader's consideration under "Additional Readings."
For educators, the text's focus on some of the more mission-critical roles played by nonprofit leaders--visionary, strategist, change agent, coach, politician and campaigner--provides a good platform from which to integrate guest speakers who exemplify these roles, and who can amplify upon these roles in a classroom setting. As the course for which this reviewer used this text (among others) included students with significant nonprofit leadership experience, others with none, and everything in between, the authors of Leaders Who Make a Difference provided a reading reasource that was digestible and meaningful for both the experienced and aspiring nonprofit leader.
It's anti-capitalism slant hurts its message.......2005-03-31
I'm trying to read this book but it is getting harder and harder to do so. It's preface and first chapter (The Leadership Challenge) were fine. However, the second chapter (The Greater Good) was awful. It spews a lot of anti-capitalism garbage served up as fact without backing any of its statements. Stuff you'd expect to hear from a socialist that is a professor in the fairyland of academia. First, you do not raise yourself up by tearing down others. Second, the author (singular because it is obvious Dobbs just lent his name and this book is all written by Nanus) essentially condemns capitalism and individualism and praises socialism and the collective. What a fool and a moron. Seriously. He acts as if there was still a debate over this issue. Third, he begrudgingly acknowledges anything positive that capitalism has done for society and only presents non-profits as doing the best things for society. He doesn't present what damage non-profits have done. In America, it was non-profits that did the greatest damage to society with the Prohibitionist movement. This unbalanced view greatly hurts what little good this book offers. Leaders of non-profits have to work with reality and not fantasy. And that's not the only thing that is off about this book.
The author just doesn't understand management at all. Now the book is about leadership, but, contrary to the author's stance, leaders are managers. He views them as two separate jobs and anyone that has actually lead an organization (I being one of those) knows they're not. Again, the author comes across as not being connected to reality ... like a professor. And I won't even touch the silliness of his E=mc^2 statement.
And his "organizational capital" is another example that he really doesn't understand business. He thinks he's coming up with some new form of capital that no one else has but when he lists what his "organizational capital" is, you can easily identify the items on his list as really belonging to the other established forms of capital that he just listed.
Now since I've read it this far, I am going to try to skim through the rest of this book and see if there's anything worthwhile in it. If you don't see a second review by me here, you will know that I didn't find anything that other books have done a better job of covering.
Whenever you buy a book about business (and non-profit organizations are businesses) and you see one of the authors is a professor, my best words of advice is to always put the book back up on the shelf. I've yet to read a business book by a professor that was worth reading. Sadly, this book is another example of that. What little solid information that I've read so far in this book is what others have said numerous other times and is the only reason why I didn't give this book a 1 out of 5. What new "information" this book presents is just fantasies you'd expect to hear from someone insulated from reality on a college campus.
Leaders Who Make Difference --- Makes a Difference.......2001-03-15
There is a dearth of leadership literature aimed at the non-profit and public sectors. Leaders Who Make a Difference by Nanus and Dobbs helps to fill that void. It is a very valuable leadership guide and reference book for leaders in the non-profit sector. Their synthesis of the leadership literature and their emphasis on shared vision, strategy, and team building with tools and guides is very valuable to students of leadership as well as current mangers who are enhancing their leadership skills. The roles of a leader that are emphasized - visionary, strategist, change agent, coach, politician, and campaigner - are useful reminders to leaders in all sectors about the importance and complexity of leading well with a full set of skills. This book is being used in the curriculum of an International Family Planning Leadership Program with great success - so it has global relevance and appeal. Our fellows have found the book to be full of tips and tools that serve to validate the skills that they already have as well as guide them to devleop more facets of their leadership. I highly recommend this book to leadership development programs and practitioners in the non-profit and public sectors.
Home run on leadership for not-for-profits.......2000-08-02
"As Editor of the Not-for-Profit CEO Monthly Letter, I had occasion to review "Leaders Who Make a Difference" for our readership, which consists almost entirely of executive directors and board members. I recommended it enthusiastically, telling our readers that `this volume should be on your desk; not in the book case, but on your desk.' After the review was published, I received the following letter from a nationally known consultant to not-for-profit boards." George B. Wright, Editor, "The Not-For-Profit CEO Monthly Letter," C3 Strategies, Portland, OR
"The challenges today's nonprofit organizations face make effective leadership a critical need. By combining relevant theory with case studies that exemplify leadership excellence, Nanus and Dobbs have created an invaluable and much-needed resource for all nonprofit leaders." Kathleen D. Edwards, consultant and author, Bowman-Edwards & Associates, Seattle, WA.

Excellent Leadership Handbook.......2001-10-01
I first read this book in 1994, and have just read it a second time this week. As I read this book, I had the opportunity to look back at how I have been profoundly influenced by her wisdom, humor, humility and strength.
Reading it this second time around, I chose to do so with for 3 purposes: Develop my ability to attract an excellent board of directors; create wonderful sales literatures that attract people to my seminars. And find more quotes to use, as opening to my seminar presentations.
Wow! I found what I was looking for. And I am sure that when I read it again, in the very near future, I will grow in my life's journey.
Another interesting point that I discovered during this second read is that years ago, when I finished my military career, I had often asked corporate civilians what the difference is between leadership and management -- Sheila Murray-Bethel definitely answers this in this book.
Read this book to get more out of your life.
Great book on leadership principles.......2001-05-02
"Making a Difference" covers many essential areas of leadership such as finding a mission, thinking big, ethics and maturity, mastering change, sensitivity, risk taking and decision making, using power, communication, team building, courage, and committment. Although these topics are covered in many other leadership and personal development books, Bethel does a fantastic job of explaining and supporting them with excellent examples and also showing how to apply them effectively. I found the book very informative, inspiring, and straightforward. Anyone seeking advice on becoming a "true" leader should get this book. It's a good starter book. This book has recieved praise from people such as Zig Ziglar, Denis Waitley, Harvey Mackay, Ken Blanchard, etc.
I would also recommend reading "Leadership from the Inside Out" by Kevin Cashman and "The Book of Leadership Wisdom" and almost any book by Ken Blanchard (like Gung Ho)or John C. Maxwell.

Clear and concise book on Positive impact.......2007-01-05
I like reading books that have the quality of being an easy read. The power of positive outlook and attitude toward work can not be over estimated. The author does not limit the discussion to the business world, but that is the bulk of the focus. It is easy to become self absorbed in the day to day activities without really considering the impacts of our actions. This book draws attention to these details in leadership.
Dissapointed.......2006-11-10
IT is just a rehash of 360* leadership by John Maxwell. Save your money!
Book Description
In years past, a business could measure its success by its bottom line. Today, a ""profitable"" company is one that balances human values along with economic ones. Managers who lead with an awareness of this union between people and profits are true leaders.
Price and Ritcheske's book, True Leaders, provides managers of companies big and small with a blueprint for success through positive leadership. More than just theory, True Leaders describes what successful people actually ""do"" to reach new levels of leadership. Drawing on interviews with more than 25 CEO's and presidents, the authors outline ten leadership characteristics that anyone can adopt to build up their company's people and profits.

Learn from success stories!.......2002-10-08
Instead of the usual single sided text written by an individual corporate leader on what a wonderful contribution to America they have made, this book explores the commonalities of many successful leaders in and out of the corporate world. Readers will find the writing style to be easy to read and easy to learn from with the "Explore and Discover" section at the end of each chapter. The length is long enough to get an solid overview of the concepts presented, yet short enough to keep the reader anxiously turning pages.
Kudos to authors Bette Price and George Ritcheske for presenting a fresh approach on the leadership topic!
Can't put it down!.......2002-04-24
This is a wonderful book that anyone who wants to lead should read. It is also a great read for those who want to understand the strengths and weaknesses of management within their own company.
Refreshing Values-Based Approach.......2002-02-03
I've read a lot of books about leadership that use exemplary leaders to make the author's points. Most turn out to be biographical anthologies. True Leaders is different.
This tightly written (read: no fluff to bulk-up the book's size) book is organized around a set of values, which the authors found to be central to corporate success. With a focus on core values, leaders operate differently than those who are focused on what the bottom line will look like at the end of the next reporting period. Their results are stronger and more sustainable in the long run. Satisfaction levels-for them and for the people working for them-are much higher. Trust runs deep. True leadership is at work.
The authors interviewed 25 CEOs from both private and public sector organizations. They confirmed that ten core values are the essence of their work: Passion is a prerequisite. See what is not yet visible. Care enough to connect and convey. Treat learning like dirty dishes. Do what's right and tell the truth. Trust is a must. Recognize and build people. Trust your intuition. Risk to respond and grow. Respect the importance of balance. And those core values are the chapters of the book.
In each of the chapters, the authors explain the value and its importance, illustrating and reinforcing the concepts through stories from the CEOs. These perspectives are woven into the fabric of each chapter in a way that is very comfortable for the reader. The input from the CEOs brings the values to life, inspiring as well as educating the reader. The presentations are never "in-your-face," but fit nicely into the pattern of the reader's experience with the book.
Just about the time you'll feel like you've completed the book and are ready to close the cover with a silent "thanks" to the authors, you'll discover there's more. Over thirty more pages are organized into appendices talking about Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), a leadership evaluation, a one-on-one discussion card, an attitudes and values graph, and profiles of the companies represented by the CEOs used in the book. And, of course, there's an index. Nice package.
You might want to get two copies of this book, one to keep on the shelf, and one to loan to friends.
shelf, and one to loan to friends.
A "Must Read" For All Executives.......2002-01-05
"True Leaders" is one of the best books that I've ever read on leadership and management behavior! Price and Ritcheske have done an outstanding job delineating the difference between managers and leaders, as well as wannabe leaders and "true leaders." The book is insightful, exceptionally well written, and will cause anyone aspiring to key leadership roles to seriously reevaluate their approach to the people vs. profits equation. I especially enjoyed the real-world stories offered by the diverse group of executives that were profiled. "True Leaders" is a "must read" for all corporate executives!
Great lesson for basics in Leadership........2001-12-14
I found this book to be very easy to read, made basic common sense with an enhanced use of ideas and the credibility of the CEO's interviewed first rate.I especially liked the questions at the end of each chapter as, food for thought for the reader and a guideline for improvement as well.
It is a book well thought out and enjoyable to read.I highly recommend it to all aspiring leaders,to executives for their review and for their management staff.

weLEAD Book Review from the Editor of leadingtoday.org.......2004-12-22
Be The Leader is an easy-to-read publication that gets to the heart of modern day leadership. Paul Thornton uses his years of experience as a trainer and consultant to write a practical book that clearly makes sense of the complex qualities of leadership. Be The Leader is composed of six (VI) parts. The author begins his introduction by stating, "Leadership requires someone who has the desire and willingness to initiate action, make decisions, and take risks others don't want to face".
Part 1 is essential to appreciating the main focus of the book. It describes the unique 3-C Leadership Model as outlined by the author. The 3-C's are challenge, confidence and coaching. These are defined as 3 basic things that leaders do. Thornton discusses why and how these variables interact and how you as a leader can use it as "a basic formula for leadership success". The author concludes each part of the book with case studies to illustrate the pragmatic applications of his main concepts. Other parts of the book are equally valuable and include subjects such as challenging the status quo, building confidence in others, coaching to achieve top performance, setting the example by leading yourself and others. Part VI is an especially strong conclusion regarding personal leadership development. Paul Thornton challenges the reader to stretch their boundaries and implement a "practice-feedback-revisions cycle" to perfect their leadership skills. The book ends with a Be The Leader Survey and a self-analysis.
Be The Leader is a quick yet meditative reading about developing leadership in yourself and others. It gets to the point in a succinct no-nonsense way written by someone whose personal experience is readily reflected in its pages.
Highly Recommended - Especially for New or Aspiring Leaders.......2003-04-11
Finally, here is an author who not only understands what matters most in leadership (and in developing new leaders) but also provides true, practical value for the reader. There are so many books on leadership out there, I sometimes fear for the fate of Canadian forests. Being an avid reader of business books and having myself led organizations from $1 million to $3 billion, I have rarely found an author who can effectively address leadership issues.
In "Be the Leader: Make the Difference," Paul B. Thornton, an accomplished expert and author, truly gets it. He provides a clear and compelling read with a useful, distilled roadmap on how to make a genuine difference in your organization.
His book is equally useful for public, for-profit, and non-profit leaders - regardless the size of the organization. However, given the power of Thornton's model and his persuasive, real-world guidance on building and refining leadership skills, this book would be particularly helpful for new or aspiring leaders.
Thoughtful, Sensible, and Eminently Practical.......2003-02-15
There are several excellent books about leadership which have been written primarily for the relatively inexperienced executive and this is one of the best, as is Thornton's subsequently published The Triangles of Management and Leadership. I do not damn with faint praise when sharing that observation. Over the years, working with young executives to accelerate the development of their leadership and management skills, I soon became convinced that they lacked sufficient real-world business experience and a consequent frame-of-reference. Thornton provides the latter in this book and in The Triangles of Management and Leadership.
He carefully organizes his material within six Parts: a brief Introduction which literally introduces his "3-C Leadership Model," Challenging the Status Quo, Building Confidence, Coaching to Achieve Top Performance, Setting the Example, and finally, Leadership Development. It is important for relatively inexperienced executives (leadership wannabes) to keep in mind that, throughout his narrative, Thornton is building a model of superior leadership so that those who read his book can gain an awareness of areas in which to improve, and, to learn specifically how to achieve such improvement. This same model will enable supervisors to clarify (perhaps even reconsider) their own criteria when measuring the performance of those for whom they are responsible, then address more effectively those areas in which there is greatest need for improved performance. So, what I am now suggesting is that this book can be of substantial value to anyone who has not as yet become a superior leader.
A few brief comments on the "Be the Leader Survey" which Thornton includes after the final chapter. Respondents are asked to evaluate themselves within seven categories which correlate with the information Thornton has previously provided. I wish more authors of business books would include such a self-audit. The results are never wholly definitive, of course. (How could they be?) Nonetheless, several of Thornton's key points will be re-emphasized as respondents measure themselves in relation to them.
Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out Joan Magretta's What Management Is as well as just about anything written by Warren Bennis, David Maister's Practice What You Preach, Jeffrey J. Fox's How to Become a Great Boss, Rex P. Gatto's The Smart Manager's F.A.Q. Guide, Steven Silbiger's The Ten Day M.B.A, Milo Sobel's. The 12-Hour MBA, Robert F. Bruner et al's, The Portable MBA, and Nitin Nohria's The Portable MBA Desk Reference.
Very useful and practical!!.......2003-01-23
This book is full of great examples that are easy to follow. I read it all the way through once, and then went back and picked sections to concentrate on. It is easy to read and has practical tips and ideas instead of some other business/leadership books that are more fluff than anything else. I highly recommend this book to anyone in a leadership role.

Book Description
Winning leaders do three things.
1. They challenge the status quo.
2. They build confidence in others.
3. They coach people on what to do and how to do it.
Be the Leader, Make the Difference explains how you can perform each of the three leadership roles. It also points out the three C's (challenge, confidence, coaching) are interrelated. The material speaks directly to the problems faced by many managers. Throughout the book, concrete examples are used that challenge readers to move out of their "comfort zones", to feel motivated and to understand the importance of modeling success. The book doesn't simply identify areas where improvement is needed; it provides realistic examples of how to get there.

Triangles Galore.......2005-04-21
Leadership by Paul Thornton is a book full of triangles. The author describes just about every topic he covers in terms of three key components, which he then presents as sides of a triangle.
One key topic in the book involves possibilities. The three sides of that triangle are seeing, describing and pursuing.
There is a chapter called The Three C's of Leadership. That triangle has sides named challenge, confidence, and coaching.
After a while you go a little triangle crazy. But that's not the only problem with this book. Consider the chapter about self-fulfilling prophecy. The triangle for that chapter is assumptions, expectations, and reactions.
The triangle here is less than helpful. The muddled writing makes things even worse. Thornton is talking about what everyone else calls the Pygmalion Effect but he uses very different language so you have to work harder than you might otherwise.
There are similar problems throughout the book. The organization is not tight. The metaphors are not consistent. The writing is not clear, and some things seem like they are thrown in just to fill up enough pages to get above a hundred.
"But, is it worth reading?" I hear you cry. The answer to that one is an emphatic "it depends."
This book is a collection of thoughts about leadership by an experienced manager. Many of those thoughts are insightful and they can be helpful. How much value you get from this book will depend a lot on your own experience level.
If you are a relatively experienced manager yourself, you will probably find a thing or two in here that you can carry away. What you get will be worth the price of the book.
If you have access to the author, in one of his classes, on a tele-seminar or at a speech where you can ask questions, this book will probably be helpful. In those situations you can ask questions to clarify things or hear the nuance of oral presentation.
But if you are a new manager, out there by yourself, beware of this book. There are good things here, but the organization and the writing style can make them very hard to tease out. It's very easy to see only part and not the whole of what Thornton is trying to convey.
This is also one of those "leader as hero" books. You are treated to statements like this. "Leaders help individuals, teams, and organizations become more and achieve more than they ever thought possible. Why do they do it? They have a burning desire to make a difference."
Or this. "Leaders have desire, passion, and energy for their vision. They are excited about the possibilities they see for people, teams, and organizations they are leading. Leaders know their actions will make a difference."
Evidently lust for power and position and naked ambition don't show up among the leaders in Mr. Thornton's world. That makes his world different from the one that I inhabit, where those things are a regular part of the landscape and altruistic motives often remain well hidden.
There's one more problem area if you're a new manager. There is lots of advice about what to do, but not much guidance about how to do it. If you want to learn the basics, go to other books like Kouzes and Posner's The Leadership Challenge.
If you have been around the leadership game for a while, this book will give you the insights and opinions of another experienced manager. You'll see things differently; understand the way another manager understands them. That may be worth the price of the book. But if you're new to the management/leadership game, pass this one up.
Impactful and Easy to follow.......2003-02-10
This book provides a simple and easy-to-follow guide to leadership. Thornton postulates that the three basic elements of leadership are to challenge the status quo, build confidence in others, and coach poeple. This 3-C's framework is fleshed-out in a very easy to follow book. I used some of the concepts from the book even before I finished it. As an organizational development professional, I am going to recommend this book to people who want quick but impactful advice. Bravo.
"Off the Wall" Answers to be a Better Leader (:>.......2002-02-06
Paul B. Thornton takes real-life examples and "answers off the office walls" (i.e., business and inspirational sayings found on many of characters walls, used in his book to highlight "how to be a leader") to tell us how we can all become better leaders. Although I have not had the experience of having Mr. Thornton give a seminar or training on leadership, I can gather that many of the book's chapters and examples would indeed fit well into that forum.
When viewed in those terms, to perhaps compare Thornton's "Be the Leader: Make the Difference" to Tom Peters' "Seminar" may not be too much of a stretch. To explain, both authors use example and analogy to highlight and emphasize their core principles and do so in a manner that gives one the "feel" of an actual training (or seminar, respectively). In the case of Thornton, he focuses on three things that Leaders do:
* Challenge the Status Quo
* Build Confidence in Others
* Coach People on What to Do and How to Do It
One interesting aspect of the 3 C's is that in Mr.Thornton's words, "Everyone has untapped leadership abilities that can be developed and utilized" and the catalyst to develop this leadership is the desire to "make a difference". Thus, by using the 3 C's we all can become better leaders, managers, supervisors, coaches and people.
Overall, Paul Thornton really has great experience to share and ideas to express and in his book he undoubtedly combines the best aspects of his previous two books - Lessons from the Best Managers and The Answers are on the Office Wall into a portable and pertinent book on the topic of leadership. Paul Thornton draws on his 25 years of experience training supervisors and managers at United Technologies Corporation, as well as his consulting and training experience at "Be the Leader Associates" a firm he founded to support companies in selecting and developing leaders whom
they need to compete with the best....
Be the Leader; Make the Difference.......2001-06-21
As a new entrepreneur I found this book invaluable. Just understanding my own Leadership style has been an immense asset to my company. A definite 'must read' for all the managers in your company.. They also have an extremely helpful website, www.betheleader.com , with many of the articles written by Mr. Thornton that helps to bring the subject matter into perspective.. a wonderful book.. Great overview of the work of a leader.......2000-06-27
Business consultant Paul B. Thornton has written an informative and practical book that guides and directs those of us who accept the opportunity to lead. Be the Leader, Make the Difference answers the question, "What does a leaders do?"
Be the Leader, Make the Difference is an excellent overview of both what successful leaders do and how you can develop and implement these practices into your own leadership.
Author Paul B. Thornton identifies three key responsibilities that every leader must master: challenge, confidence, and coaching. According to Thornton, "...leaders do three things: they challenge the status quo; build the confidence in others; and coach associates on what to do and how to do it."
Using these three leadership responsibilities, Thornton has developed the 3-C Leadership model which is basis for Be the Leader, Make the Difference. The 3-C Leadership model is easy to understand and even easier to implement. In addition to the excellent 3-C Leadership model, it is filled with the experience and ideas of many successful leaders. I found this book to be very practical. There are many ideas included in this book that you can immediately put into your own leadership practice. One criticism that I would raise is that some sections of the book can, at times, lose focus in the midst of the content.
Overall, Be the Leader, Make the Difference is an excellent book for those who are looking to either improve their leadership skills or better understand what a leader does. Be the Leader, Make the Difference reads quickly and includes many real life examples of the 3-C Leadership model in practice along with case studies to assist in applying these principles in a business setting. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking to improve his or her leadership skills or who wants a better understanding of the key responsibilities of a leader.
