Book Description
Soon to be a major motion picture starring Will Smith, THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS is the inspiring, rags–to–riches story of the charismatic Chris Gardner –– a once homeless father who rasied and cared for his son on the mean streets of San Francisco and went on to become a crown prince of Wall Street
At the age of twenty, Milwaukee native Chris Gardner, just out of the Navy, arrived in San Francisco to pursue a promising career in medicine. Considered a prodigy in scientific research, he surprised everyone and himself by setting his sights on the competitive world of high finance. Yet no sooner had he landed an entry level position at a prestigious firm, Gardner found himself caught in a web of incredibly challenging circumstances that left him homeless with his toddler son. Instead of giving in to despair, the two spent almost a year moving from shelters, "HO–tels", and soup–lines, even sleeping in the public restroom of a subway station – ultimately making an astonishing transformation from the bathroom to the boardroom.
Part "Finding Fish," part "The Pact," THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS is a mythic, triumphant, and unstintingly honest memoir whose hero will appeal to every American.

I read the book before I saw the movie..........2007-10-22
...and I couldn't put it down.
They tell you on the dust cover that it's a memoir of one man's journey from homelessness to prosperity. But it's a page-turner, how he got to that point of beginning. Chris Gardner bares it all, and had me crying and laughing out loud all on the same page.
It's an amazing rag-to-riches story of determination and focus to overcome all odds.
Good movie, even better book........2007-10-20
I orginally saw the movie in the theaters and immediately wanted to indulge in the book therafter. Well, time has gotten away from me, and I finally picked up the book that I had purchased many months ago and read it straight through in two days.
This book is VERY inspiring as it shows that no matter what background or social situation you come from, you can conquer and do ANYTHING you want in life.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who has big dreams of doing something incredibly with their lives, and anyone who wants to read a truly moving piece of literature.
The Motivations of Negative Influences.......2007-10-08
This is a great inspirational story. It was a bit graphic for my personal taste and the book focuses tremendously on Chris Gardner's youth, which is where he derived his burning desire to excel through a number of horrific events. I bought this book after watching the movie. While the movie focuses on his life post-separation from his wife, the book only gets to this point at the end. Although I am only rating the book 4-stars, I could hardly put it down while I was reading it.
Meaningful Inspiration.......2007-09-11
Mr. Gardner's story is more than another story about having to pull oneself up by their own bootstraps, it is a mantra for Urban Americans who are dealing with cyclical social issues. Poor Education, Poverty and Single Parent household stories are no longer acceptable reasons for not achieving, unfortunately they are too common place. The Pursuit of Happyness is a great example of the saying "In order to be it, one must see it"!
Heartwarming.......2007-09-08
I've read one of the most touching and heartwarming book of one's life. It is a story that spreads open past hurts, the need for bottom-line respect that should come from the people who should give it (family) and speaks of success despite of...

Good but not excelent!!.......2007-03-31
This is a good book. It goes straight to the point... good motivational thoughts! However, it is so short (36 half pages) that it seems rather a short essay than a book. I would have wanted to see some more anedoctes and more biography from Michael Jordan's life.
Overall, a good book.
The essence of a winner..........2006-01-27
The most amazing thing about this book is it's simplicity. What's new in the book? nothing, but it's the pairing of Jordan, the icon, with simple core value that makes it a wonderful read.
Jordan's message is very simple, follow your heart and will add strong values and you can accomplish any goal in life.
This is a book to be kept handy at all times...
And the secret of success is..........2005-10-04
...that there is no secret. Michael Jordan is probably the greatest basketball player of all time, so when such an accomplished man speaks on the achievement of excellence, it is worth the effort to pay attention. In a short 36-page read, Jordan gives advice that resonates far beyond sports, and applies just the same to academic, business and personal areas of life.
Discipline, foresight and sacrifice make up Jordan's own triangle offense against the obstacles one meets on the road to excellence. I was glad to see he made the observation that people in this country only see the end result - the final payoff - completely ignoring the backbreaking work it took to reach that end. You see it everyday - an honest effort done in by a lack of foresight and pie-in-the-sky goals. People want the payoff without putting down the deposit, and as a result a lot of potential is nipped in the bud. Hard work alone does not guarantee, but in the end that is all you can do. Excellence, then, is not a goal, but a process.
Homer wrote 'The Iliad' thousands of years ago, but there is a line within that still holds true today, and particularly here. A young hero there muses that of all qualities in a person - bravery, wisdom, God-given strength - nothing matters so much as heart. Jordan echoes that sentiment - talent alone will not do the trick, and his achievements confirm he was right. Heart measures the gap between the hall-of-famer and the might-have-been.
The Greatest Basketball Player of All-Time Speaks........2005-04-07
I CAN'T ACCEPT NOT TRYING is a small inspiration book written by the greatest basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan. Jordan had an unbelievable career in the NBA before retiring, tried playing major league baseball, came back to the NBA to lead the Chicago Bulls to a few more championships, then retired again, then came out of retirement again to play for the Washington Wizards--a team he had owned for over a year, before retiring for a third time in 2003. This little book was published just prior to Jordan's first return to basketball after his first "retirement". It was one of many items to fuel the media hype about his return.
There really isn't very much here. The book is only 36 pages long, is divided up into 6 sections, and includes a few posed pictures. The 6 sections are: goals, fears, commitment, teamwork, fundamentals, and leadership. Jordan shares a few personal thoughts and recollections in each section. Though there are one or two nuggets into the mind of Jordan, there isn't anything here that is new, original, or groundbreaking. Still, most people want to be like Mike and it is one of the few things Jordan ever wrote. It makes a nice little gift for Jordan fans, or someone who likes basketball and is getting ready to graduate high school.
Awe inspiring book by legend Michael Jordan.......2004-01-08
This is one of the best motivational books ever written. It is short, yet powerful. Michael Jordan truly is a hero of our time. Although I don't even follow basketball at all, the words he writes are poignant, powerful, inspirational and teaches all of us a lesson on how to live and how to aspire. Great book, for adults and children alike.

An interesting book, but not original and not very helpful.......2006-12-08
The author investigates a variety of conditions to see if they do or do not promote happiness. The focus of the book is psychological studies, making the ideas more scientifically authoritative. It's strong points are an entire chaper devoted to "Love and Marriage" and a chapter on "Flow in Work and Play." The book concludes with an epilogue listing the key points of the book in 2 pages. Three cheers for brevity!
Anicius Boethius (480 to 524) wrote "The Consolation of Philosophy" long ago while he was awaiting his execution. Boethius covered all the key points in Myers' book long ago and was more eloquent. Myers' does not really give you a guide book for living a happy life. He says, "The essence of happiness is pausing to savor the gift of our present moments." There is so much more to living a happy, fulfilling life than that. I recommend "Achieve Lasting Happiness" by Robert Canright as a better guide for living a happy life.
Why we are happy. Really. Buy this by the case and give.......2006-08-20
one to everyone you know ~
a great study ~ i first read this in my early 30s, and was thrilled to see it republished. At 54, i am still amazed at how this book/study nailed Life...
demystifies happiness as something we can't seek directly, but as something that comes as the result of the right actions and accurate thinking about things...
bad things happen to everyone ~ but more good than bad is the way it's meant to be, and reasonably can be...
it's very comforting and inspiring ~
A treasure-trove of modern wisdom.......2005-12-10
I first heard of "The Pursuit of Happiness" by David G. Myers as a recommended read in "Psychology Applied to Modern Life" by Wayne Weiten and Margaret A. Lloyd - a truly remarkable textbook. This obviously gives immediate credibility to this book, and I have to say that my personal assessment of it is in keeping with that of the two aforementioned authors.
Take these few quotes as a preview of "The pursuit of Happiness" by David G. Myers, a treasure-trove of modern wisdom:
"Happiness is loving what you do, and knowing it matters."
"Well-being resides not in mindless passivity but in mindful challenge."
"Growing up means gaining the wisdom and skills to get what we want within the limitations imposed by reality."
"... two ways to be rich: One is to have great wealth. The other is to have few wants."
"Realizing that well-being is something other than being well-off is liberating. It liberates us from spending on eighteen-hundred-dollar dresses, on stockpiles of unplayed CDs, on luxury cars, on seagoing luxury homes-all purchased in a vain quest for an elusive joy. It liberates us from envying the life-styles of the rich and famous. It liberates us to invest ourselves into developing traits, attitudes, relationships, activities, environments, and spiritual resources that will promote our own, and others', well-being."
Happy reading!
Laurent Grenier, author of the book "A Reason for Living."
Fascinating summaries of studies of well-being.......2004-04-29
David Myers summarizes and synthesizes studies on the sense of well-being and happiness. What makes us happy, or what makes us perceive to be happy? Study after study is cited to describe factors that are related or unrelated to happiness, sometimes disproving "conventional wisdom." Myers explains cultural factors and thinking patterns, and how they are related to how happy we are.
After reading this book, I have a better understanding of what really matters in life, and why. I also better know how to foster my own happiness, and what to pursue after. Wealth doesn't matter. Thankfulness does help. Ethnicity doesn't matter. Having a close network of friends does.
I highly recommend this book as a great information source on happiness. It is not a self help book, but a renowned psychologists wisdom woven with objective studies.
Why you are smiling or scowling?.......2004-03-04
This is one of the best books on the subject of happiness. It is a serious book written based on fact (backed up by research) and not fluff. When I say fluff I'm referring to all those books with the authors personal claim to 100 ways to happiness. In this book the bibliography is 40 pages alone, with about 520 books or articles used as reference. 520! You can see that there has been a great deal of hard-core research done.
Other books tell you to picture your dreams or hug your neighbor. Not this one. David backs up all his arguments with numerous studies that have been performed in recent years.
An early chapter on wealth and well being contains information from at least ten studies. One study covers sixteen countries and involves responses from 170, 000 participants. I'm happy to see that David has looked at happiness within the influence of a culture not just the individual itself. In happiness books I believe it is important to correlate happiness between the culture and the individual. Like David points out, a boy in Africa playing with a tin can, can be as happy as Richy Rich in North America and his fully loaded gaming lap top. Obviously our society places too much emphasis on wealth and materialism to fuel our happy cells when perhaps we should be simply fine-tuning our attitudes.
The chapter describing the four traits of happy people is an excellent short list of reasons on why some are cheerful (and some grouchy). I see that they undoubtedly apply to me.
· I like myself . . .(Self Esteem, happy people like themselves).
· My destiny is my own in that I have "earned", a great job, super home, improving golf game and supporting family . . .(Personal Control, happy people choose their destinies).
· I am positive about my future . . .(Optimism, happy people are hope filled).
· I like giving presentations and also acting the fool around others. . (Extraversion . . .happy people are outgoing)
David also discusses the topic of flow, which has been extensively researched by Mihal Csikszentmihalyi. Flow is about finding meaning in what you are doing and being engaged to the point of losing sense of time. I can't agree with him more on this important happiness trigger since time can torture us when we are idle, and be forgotten when we are fully engaged. Remember when the afternoon whizzed by? I don't think you were flicking channels on the TV. Perhaps you were engaging or stretching your mind (playing guitar, reading, scuba diving . . .etc) therefore growing as a human being. For more information on this subject see my review on Mihal's book focusing on Flow.
David also presents his view on friendship and happiness again backed up by plenty of concrete research from various institutions. The same goes for love, marriage, and faith.
The only weak area in this book, is the chapter on faith where religion is examined and whether it plays an important role in happiness. I found the chapter too long, it jumped around a lot and it did not end the book well. I think the chapter describing the four traits of happiness would have been a great closer.
With that said I still have to give this book an excellent rating. I am awed at the amount of obviously great research that has been done. This piece of work will leave you with obvious understanding why some of us are grinning and some are scowling.

Success to Significance is a Success!.......2007-01-12
Lyod Reeb has put together a very helpful guide for those of us at mid-life who want to move into doing something more significant for the rest of our lives, but don't know where to start. His personal story and that of others he mentions in the book are both inspiring and helpful.
The primise of the book is good, but it missed the mark for me........2006-12-17
I read the book for a Bible study I was part of at Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, Texas. I had breakfast as part of a group of men with the author Lloyd Reeb.
The book attempts to show how regular people can add significance to the second half of their lives. He atempts to show how persons before achieving financial freedom and without leaving their career can find significance. He strives to show you don't have to be rich to find a life of significance. It in somes ways attempts to answer the question, "Is that all their is?" He attempts to help you tie meaning to your work and/or ministry to you work. I was disappointed in the examples used in the book. They tended to be examples of persons who were upper middle-class, business owners etc., instead of what I view would be ordinary people. The primise of the book is good, but it missed the mark for me.

Great roadmap for entrepreneurs.......2006-01-31
I started a service business and it grew rapidly, and hit some turbulence along the way. I found out about Dr Adizes and got his books, and was amazed at how he nailed it with my company and what we were going through. It was like looking in a mirror. The book was great, and we even hired some of their consultants to help us navigate a path, and it certainly helped to get us on the right path again. I am very impressed with this guy and his team, and think he has done a great service to identify the common path entrepreneurial companies follow -- and the path they need to take to survive and continue to prosper.

A guide for the Companies reach PRIME.......1997-04-23
Every day a new book is published in the area of organizational transformation, but only a few have significant value and can help the companies to reach the prime. This is the subject of "PURSUIT OF PRIME", the last book of Ichak Adizes PH.D.,a famous consultant, based in USA, with 30 years of experience and success, in the USA and other countries, in the organizational transformation area.
The Pursuit of Prime wrote in an easy to read language and according Adizes Methodology, gives to the companies's leaders a "HOW TO" guide to reach or keep their companies to the maximum vitality, creativity, proftability, performance and commitment, called PRIME by Adizes.
Considering that every change ( they are allways occuring) causes a problem, for each stage of the organization's lifecycle, Adizes shows what is a normal and an abnormal problem and what we have to do in terms of style of manegement, structure, strategy, staffing, rewards and planning and goals, to correct or to avoid the abnormal problems.
This is a great book to be used like a tool for all leaders that want to transform their companies, big or small, in benchimarking-"TOP OF ALL".

I quit my job as a technician at Particle Measuring Systems in Boulder with reservations. I enjoyed the work and the people but felt I was not communicating well with certain engineers. Lizard (code name for one of the engineers)loaned me a wonderful book, though. It's called Pursuit of Passionate Purpose by Theresa Szczurek. That last name reminds me of the author of Flow -- Csikszentmihalyi. The Pursuit of Passionate Purpose deals with a topic Thomas Jefferson discussed: the battle between the heart and head in making decisions. I encourage everyone to read this book.

Pursuit of Passionate Purpose is an excellent book for those starting out in a career or those who are very experienced. The book contains a practical method to support people in effecting the changes they are seeking. The stories of various people interviewed by the author are really interesting and inspiring.
Just the Push You Need.......2005-01-10
I had been sitting on the fence finishing my book. After reading Pursuit Of Passionate Purpose, I realized no one was going to finish the book but me and I didn't have forever to live my dreams. Each day that went by that I didn't do what I loved was a lost day. The book provided the push to discipline myself, focus my day, and live what I love. After reading the book, I finished the pieces I need to sell my book. But I loved the process of living my dream each day that I wrote. Thank you Theresa.

Great book, also an easy read.......2006-02-18
In college I took a sports psychology class taught by a practicing Sports Psychologist who coached Many NFL & PGA Tour players. This was one of out main books we used and it is still in my library today. As a collegiate athlete (baseball), I was able to easily apply the concepts to my own game. I don't know if it helped my physical ability, but mentally I was much more confident and focused.
Mental Training for Sports and LIFE.......2005-11-12
This book has many useful tools not just for athletes but also for individuals seeking something for their everyday lives.
Best section I thought was on setting goals, the wheel of excellence, maintaining positive perspectives and outlook, and how to deal with distraction control, quest for consistency, etc etc.
These are all very important concepts not just for the athlete in training but also for everyday people seeking a goal or purpose in life, maintaining that path to success, and knowing how to deal with every day bumps and grinds and highs and lows.
Book talks about:
Setting a goal
Make commitment to that goal
And Initiate Action to accomplish your goals
and don't let distractions, criticism, or other people distract you from your path.
Sounds simple? But for most of us we really have to work on it! Takes lotsa work and discipline to know what you want, work to towards getting it, and not stray from distractions or criticism.
Excellent.......2001-12-28
A must read for those who wish to push their performance in anything to the next level. He allowed me to squat weights I wouldn't have been able to life before!
Could Be Better.......2000-08-04
I am an amatuer athlete and constantly try to update my skills. I have read a number of Sports Psyc. Books and feel this book is a little weak. To much reliance on the same old stuff. Good stories, somewhat inspirational. The best book I've read to date is an Amazon recommendation titled, The Mental Edge. Excellent application of techniques that are the cutting edge.

Lombardi Great.......2005-08-30
I enjoy this book becasue it is all the great Lombardi quotes. Which I have always found to be inspiring. I like that in some they origin was there to explain the quote.
A great book for anyone, not just a sports fan.......2001-06-08
Full of laughs and in-depth knowledge of the competitive spirit, this book shows the flaws as well as the greatness of Vince Lombardi, and also in ourselves. One of my favorites: "The quality of a person's life is directly proportional to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor." This could be used even in a classroom environment as a point of discussion for lessons on the price of winning, and integrity.
Do You Want to Be and/or Remain a Winner?.......2000-04-01
Looking for great quotes, and not a storyline? Here they are. The areas represented and the sagacity of the quotes conferring the essential kernals of Vince Lombardi's thought and personal philosophy are at times stupendous. The major flaw is, I believe, the way he is characterized in the section: "The of Wrath of Lombardi." It is this section which I think pulls the book down, because it shows a part of him that is not consistent with the way he is portrayed, by virtue of the various quotes, in the other sections either before or after. In other words, it gives the impression, that although he may have said these things, they could be out of context and not truly representative of him as a person. Other than that, there are things in here we all need to hear from time to time; or even all of the time. It is a wonderful memory of a trememdous motivator and personal achiever who followed his dream and obtained it. His legacy, conveyed to us in these marvelous quotations, is that all persons can overcome fear, cowardice, impulsivity, etc., and be winners in our own personal lives--and by doing so, encourage others to do and be the same.
Poor reading rip-off of Strive to Excel Lombardi book.......2000-03-30
This book is a poor rip-off of Jennifer Briggs' much classier Strive to Excel: The Wit, Will & Wisdom of Vince Lombardi. George is a politician with book editor connections, not a writer--and it shows in his clumbsy writing and diction. Briggs' Strive to Excel is a much better read on Lombardi. And I'd expect it to be. She's an award-winning sportswriter who's written for USA Today, SI, etc. Buy Brigg's book, not George's fluff.
Changed my life!.......1999-05-03
I had heard from my Coach about Vince Lombardi and after reading this book of quotes I became inspired. I realized the things I had to change in my life in order to become a winner. This is an excellent book and a great comfort to me when I am feeling unmotivated.

A Disappointment.......2007-07-02
Having enjoyed other works by Dextar Yager I did anticipate this release, but found myself letdown from the start. Yager is an incredible speaker with a great story of success and - it seems - worked to spin off his influence in this book that is not as worthwhile as it could have been.
He brings in analogies and cliches from the start. In his introduction Yager is talking about success and The Pursuit one must take, and then goes into ". . .every morning a lion gets up to hunt for its food and every morning an antelope gets up to run with the herd. The point is that if you're a lion or an antelope you'd better wake up running." It's pure filler and not much at that. Things like this appear frequently.
There are pearls of wisdom, and perhaps I'm just the swine that they were cast upon, but you can find much better and useful works on motivation from books that will actually apply to something other than more space in the motivational section.
