Product Description

The DASH Diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) has been proven in several research studies, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), to lower blood pressure and cholesterol without medication. It is the diet recommended by the NIH for lowering blood pressure. The 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend this eating plan for everyone. And the DASH diet forms the basis for the USDA MyPyramid. The DASH diet is rich in fruits, vegetables, low fat or nonfat dairy, and includes lean meats, fish and poultry, grains, nuts and beans. It will help lower cholesterol and will support healthy weight loss. It is flexible enough to meet the lifestyle and food preferences of most people. However, many people find it challenging to put the DASH diet into practice. This is the user-friendly book, designed to make it easy; it was written by a dietitian who is experienced in helping people make sustainable changes in how they eat. This book shows you how to follow the DASH diet in your real life. How to eat on-the-run, how to add more vegetables even if you hate vegetables, how to make over your kitchen to support the DASH diet, how to lose weight with the DASH diet. It has 28 days of meal plans (with adjustments for 1200, 1600, and 2000 calorie plans), and DASH-friendly recipes. It shows you how to make other lifestyle changes to lower blood pressure, such as losing weight and adding exercise. What differentiates this book from other books on the DASH diet? This book provides practical, real life solutions. It goes beyond "what" is involved with the DASH diet; it also shows you "how." The book helps you make your own personal plan, with the specific steps you will take to fit the DASH diet into your daily routine. This book truly allows you to make your own personal "DASH Diet Action Plan," whether your goal is lowering blood pressure, or just having a healthier lifestyle. It is your first step in improving your health for the long run.

5 out of 5 stars Just What I Needed!.......2007-10-09

This is SUCH a great aid if you are following the DASH diet. It makes it so easy to make meals and stick to eating healthy foods. Thank you Ms. Heller!

5 out of 5 stars Science and Creativity - A Great Combo for Lifestyle Change.......2007-05-28

This is a great book - it hits the balance between being grounded in the best science around, yet it is easy and fun to follow. I can see from other reviews that people are using the recipes and the plans. As a dietitian and health educator, the sort of self-tests and forms in this book give people an easy way to track how they're doing, or even to learn their baseline. If you struggle with cholesterol or high blood pressure, this is a great addition to your bookself (just remember not to let it rest on the shelf too much!).

3 out of 5 stars DASH diet.......2007-05-17

I haven't fully read the whole book yet but have started to use the recipes, I find them very easy to follow even though they are in American measures.

5 out of 5 stars At work eating plan.......2007-05-13

After reading this book as well as the Glusimax Index book I have changed my eating habits at work. I get 5 or 6 varieties of vegetables as well as some nuts, raisins and a small amount of lean meat. I grind everything in a blender until it looks like coleslaw. Carry to work in several large baggies - ( I walk about a mile to public transportation (BART)and then about another mile from PT to the work site ). I take with me 4 or 5 pieces of fruit also. I eat Oatmeal with frozen berries around 6AM at work, then three 1 1/2 cups worth of the vegetable blend stuff with some tobasco and oil and vinegar dressing at 10, 12 and 2. I have lost 10 lbs in the last 3 weeks. I never really feel hungry! That's the best part. Terry - OH! I stopped drinking beer & vodka on a regular basis.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-03-31

I highly recommend this book for anyone who is ready to enjoy wholesome food and reap the benefits of a healthier lifestyle. Don't waste your money on another fad diet book. Buy this user- friendly book based on National Institutes of Health research. The forms that are provided make it easy to set goals and track your personal progress. You will develop the skills needed to achieve long -term success as you learn about deciphering food labels, making over your kitchen, and eating away from home. The DASH Diet for Hypertension, recommended by the American Heart Association, has been shown in studies to lower blood pressure in two weeks without the use of drugs. The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet emphasizes fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy; includes moderate amounts of fish, poultry, and nuts; and reduces consumption of red meat and sweets. Studies from the National Institutes of Health followed 800 participants and found that the DASH diet lowered blood pressure as much as typical medication.

This is no quirky diet--it's the way the major medical groups have been advising us to eat all along, but with a specific formula that tells you how many servings to eat from each Food Pyramid food group. You also get suggestions for exercising moderately, losing weight, reducing salt, and food shopping.

Included are two weeks of daily menus and 62 recipes, with modified favorites like Macaroni and Cheese and Sweet and Sour Pork with Vegetables, plus innovative dishes such as Mango/Black Bean Salad with Grilled Shrimp and Sweet-Potato Chips (baked). The authors are medical hypertension experts associated with Harvard and Duke medical centers. Recommended for people who want to lower their blood pressure or just eat more healthfully. --Joan Price

If you need to make sense of hypertension, this book will help you control it and even beat it without drugs. Includes recipes, meal plans and shopping lists.

5 out of 5 stars Finally something that makes sense.......2007-01-10

This book helped make sense of a scarey medical situation and give us the tools to pretty much do a makeover of our eating habits and lifestyle. It comes with helpful meal plans and shopping lists. I would recommend it to anyone who is really serious about making some changes.

5 out of 5 stars Dash Diet works.......2006-08-25

Not only has the Dash Diet helped with my hypertenion, but I have also lost a few pounds which also helps. Following the suggested foods, you are automatically eating more healthy and have more energy. I would suggest it for anyone and not just those looking to help with hypertension.

4 out of 5 stars Very easy diet!.......2006-01-30

This diet is very easy and I have already lost 8 pounds after only 3 weeks. My blood pressure is also dropping. The only reason I did not give this book 5 stars is that they do not offer any substitutions for foods that I do not like.

5 out of 5 stars The best after the Bible!.......2005-06-28

Yes, indeed, this is a book that I will always keep. After the Bible, this is the best present I have made to myself. It changed the way I thought about lots of things, it gave me a desire to live the life that God wanted, a healthy one. If I am made with love, why shouldn't I treat myself with love? The recipes are great. Even my husband, who doesn't have hipertension, likes them! So, don't let it pass and get this book soon. You will not regret it!

Book Description

Dot Dot Dash! is brought to you by the editors of Pictoplasma and Pictoplasma 2. Expanding on the widely popular subject of contemporary character design, this definitive volume showcases an up-to-date survey of the personalities and characters that have entered the third dimension.

Vinyl figures, plush dolls, designer toys and action figures can be seen as a new movement in contemporary design, art and popular culture. Interest in these three-dimensional toys have surged, drawing on pop culture, graffiti and visual art. The new-generation-characters appear cute, cuddly and innocuous at first, but are often elicit, subversive and politically incorrect. Not intended for child's play, they are highly esteemed by teens and adults alike. Each is a work of art, often created by world-famous artists and many of them are produced independently in limited editions and become highly sought after collectibles.

A recent trend of character applications aspiring from inherent crossovers of the character and art worlds is also taking form in sculptures and objects, creating a new art market where artists are progressively moving beyond the boundaries of the gallery and extending their work to a disparate audience.

This voluptuous volume exhibits the expansive scope of designs and objects in the ultimate compilation of contemporary character design.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful........2007-08-24

The book is comprehensive and inspiring to me as an artist.
Not, however, suitable for children under age 13, as
some of the toys are quite gruesome, and some are sexually oriented.

5 out of 5 stars Yes!.......2007-03-26

This book it's what I expected and more, great compilation of pictures, hundred of toys, very visual and complet.

5 out of 5 stars Great Coffee Table Book.......2007-03-09

I'm telling you this really gets the conversation started. Anyone who has never seen these designer toys really get a kick out of it. This was a great purchase to hold off my addiction from buying all of the figures. The one complaint is they could have off-centered the really well done photographs so they don't get cut off in the binding. Very pleased with the amount of artwork in there. Definitely would recommend it to anyone, a collector or any other person who appreciates a fun piece of art.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2006-11-14

I just got a copy of this book in the mail today. I love it. I have been looking thru it and showing it to my friends(I have three toys in this book)since I opened it this morning. I only have one issue with it and that's that one of my toys is listed as being an 8" Dunny when it's actually a 3"...Not a big deal.
If you like designer toys even a little you will dig this book. If you are a toy customizer or toy designer, I hope you find this book as inspiring as I do.
This book even has an entire section devoted to plush toys! I've looked thru several designer toy books and I've never seen one as complete as this one.

1 out of 5 stars its ok.......2007-03-10

If you want to follow a strict diet then this is good for you, but I like more choices, so I found the diet too demanding.

5 out of 5 stars Dash Diet.......2007-03-09

This book is exceptional for people who are wanting to try something new. I ordered it for my mother in law and in 2 weeks she lost 8 lbs using this diet plan.

3 out of 5 stars Dash diet action plan.......2007-02-21

This book is so-so. Most of the info you can find on the NIH site or Dash site on line. The menus are nothing to rave about--and the recipes are not very inspiring. The only good thing is you can go on line with a site they have to download charts to keep records of weight, blood pressure, etc.

3 out of 5 stars Small and expensive.......2007-01-25

This book do have a lot of information in it and it is easily accessible. But it is a small book and the print is large so for $19.99 I was surprised and disappointed before I even opened it.

However, it describes the diet well I think and makes a good case for increasing veg and fruits into an every day diet. It also gives some tools for managing that in daily life. There were fewer recipes than I expected but if I had known it's such a small book I would not expect more. Reading it does give a positive feel for approaching the DASH diet.

My biggest disappointment however was the meal suggestions. How a normal person/couple/family could possibly manage to cook all that healthy food on weekdays is beyond me (just look at breakfasts for week one: cereal, omelette, french toast, waffles (!)...). Normal people stick to a formula (like cereal) for breakfast and vary it around that. A discussion of the importance of variation would be useful at that point, but to expect new items every breakfast is not what the most people can cope with. Same goes with lunch.

It would also be an expensive menu to follow because of the millions of fresh food items you need to keep (and will get wasted as you wont use them) and you'd have to be prepared to get a large freezer, for how else could you not have to throw away day twos left-over lunch ham when there's no other ham on the menu for 28 days (I might be wrong there.) Most people buy one topping and use it every other day until it is used up - or use left over meats from dinners.

The book would have benefitted from an (extensive) assortment of weekday menu items, such as the ham and cheese sandwich followed by a discussion of the importance to vary the food.

On the dinners I have little to comment, I have yet to try the recipes out. I doubt we're going to eat chicken three times in one week though, however prepared. I was missing any comments on lamb, which is a meat we have at home more often than beef (excluding ground beef). I do find the serving chart useful in combination with the weekly check-off form. Ticking boxes for food eaten makes it easier to get a feel for how well the diet is kept on track.

Book Description

The first practical and accessible guide to the art of punctuation for creative writers.

Punctuation reveals the writer: haphazard commas, for example, reveal haphazard thinking; clear, lucid breaks reveal clear, lucid thinking. Punctuation can be used to teach the writer how to think and how to write. This short, practical book shows authors the benefits that can be reaped from mastering punctuation: the art of style, sentence length, meaning, and economy of words. There are full-length chapters devoted to the period, the comma, the semicolon, the colon, quotation marks, the dash and parentheses, the paragraph and section break, and a cumulative chapter on integrating them all into "The Symphony of Punctuation." Filled with exercises and examples from literary masters (Why did Poe and Melville rely on the semicolon? Why did Hemingway embrace the period?), A Dash of Style is interactive, highly engaging, and a necessity for creative writers as well as for anyone looking to make punctuation their friend instead of their mysterious foe.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent complement!.......2007-08-13

This compact new book on punctuation uniquely complements standard college writing guides like THE BEDFORD HANDBOOK, now in its seventh edition, the all-time bestselling college textbook. The Bedford as well as several other college writing handbooks, such as THE HARBRACE HANDBOOK, I have used in my teaching cite punctuation examples mostly from nonfiction works.

This book's uniqueness arises from its approach: illustrating punctuation "rules" with examples drawn mostly from literary works. Moreover, the author points out how literary masters flout "rules" to create special effects. The works cited include excerpts from numerous writers such as Mark Twain, William Faulkner, and Joyce Carol Oates.

Excellent book for fiction writers.

C J Singh

5 out of 5 stars Style.......2007-08-09

The book is not about the legalities of punctuation. Rather, it is about how to use punctuation to benefit one's style of writing. Contains good information and is organized well.

5 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly Good.......2007-06-14

When I first saw this book I was skeptical: a book on punctuation? An entire chapter on the period, one on the comma, etc? What could someone possibly say about the period for an entire chapter?

I wasn't going to give this book a look but since I think Noah Lukeman's other two books are so good I decided to give this one a go. Luckily it was easy and didn't cost me anything: my local library had a copy.

As I progressed through it I saw how wrong I was. Noah Lukeman has obviously been editing and writing books for quite some time and has insight into how things should be done and luckily he is kind enough to share his wisdom with the rest of us.

I got half-way through the library copy and decided this one was a keeper. I ordered my own copy from Amazon. Grab a copy, and if you don't have his first two books, get them too.

Mr. Lukeman, forgive me for even being the least bit skeptical. After reading your first two books I should have known you would never put out anything that wasn't thoroughly useful to other authors. Thanks a bunch, and I look forward to whatever you've got coming next.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2007-05-30

A page turner on punctuation, what more can I say? Even expert grammarians will enjoy Lukeman's engaging tone. Most of the bad examples are only mistakes that novice writers are likely to make, but the examples that illustrate the power of creative punctuation are highly illuminating.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Noah Lukeman!.......2007-05-14

This book is wonderful! If only punctuation had been explained to me like this earlier in life. I would have never believed that I could find a book about punctuation to be riviting, but I could not put it down. I highly reccomend this book to anyone (not just writers) that would like to have a better understanding of when, where, how and why to use punctuation. This book will never leave my writing desk! NEVER!

For history buffs or gardeners who enjoy more than just digging in the dirt, Tulipomania presents a fascinating look at the tulip frenzy that took place in Holland in the mid-1600s. Beginning as gifts given among the wealthy and educated folk of Europe and Asia, the tulip rapidly became a source of incredible financial gain--similar to today's Internet start-up companies or Beanie Baby collections. Stories of craftsmen discontinuing their trade and focusing on raising tulips for public auction, where they sold for prices comparable to that of a manor house, are astonishing. Poets, moralists, businessmen--it seems everyone was involved at some level.

Lack of regulation and poor quality control were just a couple of the details that led to the abrupt crash in February 1637. Tulipomania was the original market bust--people were ruined, debts went unpaid. It was a disaster similar to the stock-market crash of 1929. A brief resurrection of the mania occurred 65 years later in Istanbul, and while it was not the financial obsession Holland experienced, it led to the creation of standards in flower shape and increased the development of new types. You don't need to be obsessed to enjoy this book--an interest in tulips, history, and the futures market ensures that this will be a remarkable read. --Jill Lightner

Book Description

In the 1630s, visitors to the prosperous trading cities of the Netherlands couldn't help but notice that thousands of normally sober, hardworking Dutch citizens from every walk of life were caught up in an extraordinary frenzy of buying and selling. The object of this unprecedented speculation was the tulip, a delicate and exotic Eastern import that had bewitched horticulturists, noblemen, and tavern owners alike. For almost a year rare bulbs changed hands for incredible and ever-increasing sums, until single flowers were being sold for more than the cost of a house.

Historians would come to call it tulipomania. It was the first futures market in history, and like so many of the ones that would follow, it crashed spectacularly, plunging speculators and investors into economic ruin and despair.

This is the history of the tulip, from its origins on the barren, windswept steppes of central Asia to its place of honor in the lush imperial gardens of Constantinople, to its starring moment as the most coveted--and beautiful--commodity in Europe. Historian Mike Dash vividly narrates the story of this amazing flower and the colorful cast of characters--Turkish sultans, Yugoslav soldiers, French botanists, and Dutch tavern keepers--who were centuries apart historically and worlds apart culturally, but who all had one thing in common: tulipomania.

In 1562, most of the first tulip bulbs ever to enter Holland were mistaken for a type of onion and were promptly roasted and eaten. The few that were actually planted in the ground popped up the following spring, to the utter astonishment of Dutchmen (and -women). But it took almost another century for the flowers to drive them crazy.

Why would pious, hard-working Calvinist merchants spend fortunes (few won, most lost) on a flower? The story of Holland's infatuation with tulips in the 1630s is as much a story of the temperate Dutch merchants' uncomfortableness with their own wealth. (The Catholics--they could flaunt their money. Calvinists--they had to repress it.)

The Dutch East India Company was founded in 1602. After a few decades of Dutch ships plying distant seas and returning home laden with exotic goods, the merchants with a stake in the game became staggeringly wealthy. Yet even with their newfound wealth, they were still Calvinists: severe and restrained. They didn't decorate themselves (like those Catholics), so they decorated their surroundings. And what to buy with all that wealth? How about a commissioned portrait of wife and kids (looking severe and restrained)? Check. Nice house? Check. Manicured garden behind house? Check. And to fill that garden?

An exotic flower, first introduced from the Orient, became the object of a national obsession. Entire markets were created just to trade tulips, and the markets were soon swamped with speculators. It was the first-ever futures market. At the height of the tulip-mania, in 1636 and 1637, single bulbs could be sold for 3,000 guilders: enough to buy you one ship, eight pigs, four oxen, sundry other animals, a year's worth of food (good food, mind you), a set of clothes, some furniture and some nice silver cutlery to boot.

So why the tulip? Perhaps it was the Calvinist equivalent of the five-carat diamond ring: an acceptable treasure, neither flashy nor ostentatious, but delicate and natural, created by God. (And perhaps the fact that it bloomed only a few weeks every year meant the neighbors couldn't accuse you of constantly showing off your wealth--another sign of God's own temperance.)

The story of any 'mania' offers insight into the aspirations and anxieties of the culture it affects. And even though Mike Dash's 'Tulipomania' focuses primarily on the short-lived craze for a single flower, it opens a window on the social economics of the Dutch "Golden Age": how Holland's merchant class struggled with its strict faith, its new-found wealth, and its place at the center of a burgeoning world power.

5 out of 5 stars A classic history of a financial mania.......2006-12-08

I read this book years ago - and it's still with me. Observing the stock market, real estate, or gold, I'm reminded of the lessons it imparts.

How often can you say that about a book?

And it was fun to read - if you like histories, of course.

5 out of 5 stars If you love tulips and you don't know why...read this book.......2006-07-16

Tulipomania has been on the market for a few years, and I heard of it quite awhile back and finally got around to reading it. Anyone who loves tulips (and does not know why) needs to read this fascinating book.

While living in Amsterdam (1999-2001) weekly I would buy a bunch of 50 tulips for $10 and split the bunch up with friends, I always had them in my apartment, and only now can I identify which ones I was buying. These same friends also shared with me that during WWII, the Dutch were forced to boil and eat tulip bulbs left in warehouses. That's post-modern history of tulips...their origins in the foothills of the Himalayas was a surprise, as was the biological explanation that it is a virus that causes certain tulips to "break" and change colors from one season to the next. These are the flower bulbs that were worth more than their weight in gold, and fortunes were exchanged over possessing the rarest of the rare.

The history of the Dutch is also wrapped up in this very well-researched and written book. Their "economic mindedness" from the the butcher to the banker explains how many everyday people got caught up in "Tulipomania" by buying and selling shares in rare bulbs. As a tulip bulb usually grows larger during the season, it weighs more when dug up in the fall. The Dutch wagered the weight would be higher, and when sold, the extra weight was their profit.

All mania ends in sadness, and when the market for bulbs collapsed, many were left bankrupt, and tulipmania became, once again, only a rich man's game.

5 out of 5 stars Tulip Time.......2006-06-02

My fiance bought this book for me at Tulip Time 2005 in Holland Michigan. He was born there and spent his whole life there and I have fallen in love with everything Dutch. I just got to start the book a couple of weeks ago but it has been amazing! It conveys everything about the tulip (which I love)! This book is absolutely great!

5 out of 5 stars If you love tulips, read the book.......2006-01-11

I love tulips, so when I heard about this book I had to read it and I am glad that I did! The book focuses on the tulip craze in Holland, which took place between 1637-39. Tulips started out in China and Tibet they migrate to Turkey where they are cultivated during the "Golden Age" of the Ottoman Empire by Sullieman the Great at his Topkopi palace. From Turkey, they make their way aboard a ship to Holland.

Carolus Clusius became the first botanist in the west to do an in depth study of the tulip. As professor of botany in Leiden, he greatly succeeds in his efforts to have the bulbs and seeds cultivated by friends of his. The tulips rare beauty takes Europe by storm; women put them in their cleavage in place of wearing necklaces. As the market increases for tulips all manner of people start to breed them as a `cash crop' and trading in them brokers similar to selling stocks. People from all occupations are selling their trade tools like weavers looms to raise money to breed tulip bulbs. All of this activity causes a feverish market to spark a significant increase in tulip prices. The market really spurs the first futures market, which really trades in promissory notes and not tulip bulbs since they have a definitive growing season and people want to trade in them all year round. These promissory notes allow the euphoria to get out of hand. The market matures to the point to where one growers holdings sells for enough money to support a family of four for over one half of their lifetime. People finally come to their economic senses, money supply and bulbs dry up, and after 2 years of the tulip market being driven at a feverish pitch, it finally goes bust. Of course this causes financial ruin for allot of people. The market stabilizes and Holland becomes the premier growing area for Tulips in the world today.

This is a good book to learn about tulips during this time in history. It is an enjoyable easy read.

Book Description

A lifelong New Yorker, Rachel Alexander has seen her city change shape through the years. But while New York has never been cleaner and crime is rapidly in decline, a vestige of grittier days remains. When wealthy business owner Eleanor Redstone approaches Rachel to ask if she can investigate her father's murder—a brutal slaying that occurred when he was pushed onto the subway tracks—Rachel takes the case, plunging herself into parts of the city only its poorest residents have ever known. Because to solve Gardner Redstone's murder, Rachel must disguise herself as a homeless woman and live on the streets, searching for the dispossessed man witnesses say made the fatal push. In one of the coldest winters New York City has seen in years, Rachel is helped by a homeless Iraq War veteran, a man whose sad circumstances leave Rachel pondering her own fortunate life. This is a once-in-a-lifetime case that, before it's over, will engulf Rachel in a dangerous new world and change the way that she sees her city forever.

As her fans have come to expect, Carol Lea Benjamin once again uses deft plotting, an intimate knowledge of New York, and a considerable skill for creating believable and compelling characters to bring this captivating story to life.

4 out of 5 stars PI team of woman and dog investigate a murder........2007-09-03

Rachel Alexander and her dog, Dashiell are a team of private detectives. Yes, Dashiell is a very important part of Rachel's work. Most of us that have dogs realize how much a part of our lives they are and we treat them like the "kids" they are to us. When businessman Garner Redstone is pushed off the platform into the front of a subway train and is killed, Rachel receives a call from Redstone's daughter requesting that Rachel find out who did this terrible deed. It seems there were some homeless among those standing on the subway platform and could they have pushed Redstone? They were suspected and accused by many on the platform.

While seeing a bad fire among a group of people, some of who are homeless people that had lived in the burning building, Rachel wonders who could have set such a fire and put so many people out of a living area. Seeing all the homeless, she decided the best way to obtain information on this murder was to go underground and become a homeless person herself. Using "Eunice" as her homeless name and "Lookout" for Dashiell, she started touring the homeless areas near where the fire occurred. She was accepted by a few but rejected by most. Eunice didn't have the look or moves of a homeless woman. She had to learn--and fast! Some of the homeless took her under their wing and trusted her.

Rachel was in and out of underground living while attempting to find the stories of those on the subway platform at the time of the push murder. With the wife's knowledge, she took an undercover job in the exclusive store owned by the deceased and his wife. This store catered to only the high-class sector selling exclusively designed jackets, coats, purses, and ultra specialty dog coats! Rachel researched the files of all ex and present day employees trying to find someone that had any reason to kill Garner Redstone. Her research led her to several employees and others that had any reason to kill Redstone. Rachel made several trips to interview most of the people that could be suspected killers, including some of the homeless People.

Rachel had friends in the police department that got her information she was unable to find on her own. Dashiell was the talk and attention of all that met him, but he did not like some of them he met and made that known even though he wouldn't hurt them.

The Hard Way is a very good suspenseful read and it has some humor to lighten things up along the way. Rachel learns how extremely hard the homeless have it in their day-to-day attempt to exist. She ends up helping some of them in different ways. It has many surprises along the way including the ending as it wraps up the murder. A good read.

3 out of 5 stars Easy on the mind.......2007-03-19

This is number nine in this series featuring "Research Specialist" Rachel Alexander and her faithful pit-bull Dashiell. These books are a nice read. No blood and gore, no shoot- outs not even psychological thrills. Just good detecting work hitting the streets, working the clues from our heroine who just happens to "help" people. I've read all of the books in this series and I have yet to figure out how Rachel pays her bills. She refers to a previous life as a wife and a dog trainer, but I can't see how finding lost soles, or solving `cold cases" pays her bills.

Besides that there are plots to the stories and Rachel does keep the pace moving along.

This outing she is looking for the person who shoved a man onto the subway. She goes undercover as a homeless person in New York in the winter. She sees an entirely different side to the city she loves, even encountering her ex who doesn't recognize her. I thought that could have been left out, it seemed contrived.

Rachel follows the clues from the underground subways, to the ritzy shops to the homeless shelters and back to the why and who of the crime.

This is a soft mystery book, not a lot of action, but the pace does move along from clue to clue. The books are just long enough to while away a Sunday afternoon with a cup of cocoa. Any avid mystery reader can pick out the ending way before the last chapter; it just takes Rachel a little longer. There are moral issues involved and lots of commentary on the way of the world, so maybe this is Benjamin's soapbox.

5 out of 5 stars Just keep getting better.......2007-01-06

This is, to me, the best to date, even though I fell in love with Dash and his partner in book One. Her social commentary is right on, and the description of "Eunice's" daily treks were so engrossing I thought I was back in NYC. Time just flew, and there I was feeling seeing and grateful, that I have a roof over my head, food to eat, health insurance!!! and my family. Ms. Benjamin's stories are well done, packed move quickly, but even in the midst of the primary story line, she gives us a social commentary to "worry" on - that is a wonderful way to have an interesting story and remember others around us. I lived in NYC (as a consultant for the software firm I was employed by)for 6 months - June to Dec 23rd 1994 - I had the most difficult time ignoring the homeless and when we encountered a woman panhandling I always gave money - especially to those that I was close to in age, because, there but by the Grace of God, go I.

5 out of 5 stars Another wonderful read.......2006-12-12

Ms. Benjamin does it again, another wonderful read, an engaging mystery that gives glimpses into worlds most of us never see. I felt cold when reading about the homeless out in the snow and ice and felt a different kind of cold watching the very rich waste their oh so disposable income. A thoughful and thought provoking read, I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars It's a Hard Living on the Street.......2006-10-28

When Eleanor Redstone hires Private Investigation Rachel Alexander to find the man who pushed her father into the path of on oncoming subway train, little does she know how the case is going to effect her life. The police have no clues and after questioning the witnesses, who all seem to have just a different take on the situation, Rachel doesn't either. So she decides to go undercover as a homeless person.

While in disguise she meets and befriends Eddie Perkins, an Iraqi War vet who can't remember his real name. He has trouble remembering other stuff too. Eddie is homeless and living on New York's mean streets. With Eddie's help, Rachel is able to find the man who supposedly pushed Gardner Redstone in front of that train, but after talking to him, Rachel doesn't believe he did it, so she keeps looking and what she finds will not only surprise her, but you as well.

I like Carol Lea Benjamin's stories. She has a way of writing that makes Rachel seem human. I almost feel as if I know her. Ms. Benjamin also has a way of not only drawing you into her stories, but of making you think. In this book she does an excellent job of showing the readers, by virtue of Rachel's undercover jobs, the vast difference between the way the homeless and the wealthy live. I know it should be obvious to most, but I have to admit, until reading this, I hadn't given much thought as to how the homeless survive, especially in winter. Ms. Benjamin opened my mind to this without being even the least bit preachy. She did it in the context of a superb mystery, one I just know you're going to love as much as I did.

Book Description

Pulitzer Prize-winning author and former Washington Post reporter Leon Dash spent a year living in one of the poorest ghettos in Washington, D.C., and a total of seventeen months conducting interviews examining the causes and effects of the ever-lowering age of teenage parents among poor black youths. Dash had expected to find inadequate sex education and lack of birth control to be the root cause of the growing trend toward early motherhood, but his conversations with the mothers themselves revealed the truth to be more complex. A riveting account of the human stories behind the statistics, When Children Want Children allows readers to hear the voices of young adults struggling with poverty and parenthood and gets to the heart of teenage parents' cultural values and motivations.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Truth About Black Illegitimacy Finally Revealed.......2006-12-31

In this investigative journalism gem, award winning Washington Post reporter, Leon Dash, primarily on the advice of Bob Woodward (of Watergate fame), re-interviewed his subjects not once or twice, or even three times, but at least six times. As Woodward had so sagely suggested, after the sixth interview, the story of the teenage mothers in the Washington Highlands ghetto, where Dash lived for over a year, not only began to change but did so drastically.

After three interviews, Dash was ready to go to print without realizing he had been thoroughly "conned" by these sexually savvy teenage mothers, who had used their (and society's) favorite cover stories as their primary defense. They said that they had become pregnant because "they lacked knowledge about birth control methods;" or because it "was what their boyfriends wanted them to do;" or that "they had sex only because they feared they would lose their boyfriends if they refused, and thus became pregnant out of ignorance, etc."

However, after the sixth interview, all of the cover stories began to give way to the true motives behind these scripted pregnancies carefully engineered by very sex savvy teenagers.

By the sixth interview, to a woman, Dash's subjects, began to admit that they had all lied about the true reasons for their pregnancies, and said that the real reasons they had become pregnant were because: (1) They had become bored with, and felt left out of life and needed someone to love them unconditionally. (2) They felt they were losing control over their boyfriends because they saw themselves getting fat, ugly, and thus sexually unattractive, and having a baby was a sure way of better controlling their men. (3) Having a baby solved a host of problems with their parents, like gaining their respect as full adults. And finally (4); that with a baby, they could "get on welfare" killing the last two birds with one stone: With a monthly welfare check, they would have the money to control their boyfriends and declare their independence from their parents at the same time.

In today's social environment where the national conversation about gender issues has gone directly from complete "male chauvinism" to "complete feminine fascism," in one stroke, without "passing Go to collect $200," and with little or no honesty or light being shed on either side in the process, Dash's expose is a breathe of fresh air. It sheds a much-needed spotlight on one of the dark, dark crevices of the black race and the black social condition: why there is so much teenage illegitimacy. He corrects the record (that illegitimacy is primarily a problem of over-sexed black men) and at the same time "gores" one of America's favorite sacred cows "the motives for so much teenage pregnancy and so much single motherhood."

It is a fiercely honest book that although it has won several book awards, is still very much underrated. Five Stars.

Drug-addled, welfare-using and AIDS-infected, Rosa Lee--a black woman living in the slums of Washington, D.C.--shines an enormous amount of light on the seemingly intractable problems of the underclass by allowing Leon Dash to tell her story. You won't find any diagrams or number-crunching in this book, just an absorbing tale of inner-city despair. Dash won the Pulitzer Prize for his series of articles on Rosa Lee for the Washington Post. The book is even better--easily the best of its type since Alex Kotlowitz's There Are No Children Here.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Real hard times of a citizen growing up in The projects........2006-06-07

Rosa Lee: A Mother and Her Family In Urban America shows what can really happen if an individual does not require a successful education. The problems of Rosa Lee were dropping out of school because her own mother says that education is a waste of time and gets her nowhere in life. Other problems were growing up in the projects selling and shooting heroin, tricking, and shoplifting her way through life. The biggest problem of Rosa Lee were knowing six out of your eight children are doing the same activities as herself. Her number one quote of getting through life, "To Survive", is the worst way to live through life as a poor individual. Leon Dash really shows what it's like growing up in one of poorest ghettos of Washington D.C. The Rosa Lee book is astonishing and I encourage everyone to read it so they are influenced. I give it two thumbs up!

    4 out of 5 stars Thought provoking.......2005-01-07

If the measure of a good book is that it exposes you to new information and makes you think, then this a great book! I enjoyed Mr Dash's even-handed writing style, it wasn't overly critical or sympathetic. Rosa Lee has made some very poor decisions in her lifetime, ones that will have far-reaching effects on the generations that come after her. The book gives you the insight as to why she made those decisions without excusing her actions. I came away from this book with more questions than I had when I started reading. It's almost a "which came first, the chicken or the egg?" scenario...it makes you wonder if Rosa Lee created her own problems or if her problems created her? As a Sociologist I have always been interested in urban blight and deviant behavior and try to read as much on the topic as possible, and I must say that this is one of the better books that I have read. I would also highly recommend "The Corner" as another book that explores the issues facing the urban underclass. Thank you Mr. Dash for daring to uncover an ugly part of America that some people wish would stay hidden!

3 out of 5 stars Your Tax Dollars At Work.......2003-04-16

This book made me incredibly angry. In a nutshell, it is the horrifying story of one woman's life and legacy of ignorance, immorality, illegality, and vice. It's a very compelling read and well-written in terms of the subject matter, but there is a consistent theme throughout the book of "failure of the system," which I found insulting considering Rosa Lee and her family's grave manipulation, exploitation, and abuse of every helping hand extended.

    5 out of 5 stars Another World!!.......2002-08-06

I did'nt want to be judgmental, so I when into the book open mindedly. What I found out was Rosa Lee was Mentally abused by her mother and was loved by her father! When she has children, she overcompensates for everything they do. If you want Drugs, drama and reality you've got it. Three generations!! I found a silver lining in Rosa Lee's cloud, NOW YOU HAVE TO FIND IT!!

    5 out of 5 stars it's the system, man - but..........2001-09-04

Mr. Dashs treatment of Rosa Lees life course achieves a highly deserving goal by apparently paradoxical means: it exposes the traps of initial and subsequent living conditions by showing an individual's life shaped by it's decisions and choices. He never allows the reader to wallow in simple compassion or anger, and he never resorts to the true but useless explanation that the system is responsible for Rosa Lees miserable life. He always keeps your mind active and attentive.
A good example is his report on Rosa Lees trial for shoplifting: while the defence insists that Rosa Lee might be a thief but is a very unfortunate woman and had to steal in order to support her family and her addiction, Dash points out that Rosa Lee has been shoplifting already in her early childhood while none of her siblings did shoplift. This suggest that her behavior might have had a functionality within her relationship with her mother, not only in her relationship with the system. By never letting individual dynamics and decisions, however constraining their contexts and however dismal their consequences, be covered up by the overwhelming explanatory power of economic deprivation, he manages to show in a touching and revealing way how a person's place within a system translates into his or her behavior and behavior outcomes. Especially by never denying the individual Rosa Lee or any of her children their agency in shaping their lives, by never reducing them to inevitable victims unfortunate-but-now-beyond-redemption, by describing extensively how two of teh children escaped addiction and poverty, he exposes the systems' crushing cruelty.
