The lure of this book's promise starts with the assumption in its title. Possibility--that big, all-encompassing, wide-open-door concept--is an art? Well, who doesn't want to be a skilled artist, whether in the director's chair, the boardroom, on the factory floor, or even just in dealing with life's everyday situations? Becoming an artist, however, requires discipline, and what the authors of The Art of Possibility offer is a set of practices designed to "initiate a new approach to current conditions, based on uncommon assumptions about the nature of the world."
If that sounds a little too airy-fairy for you, don't be put off; this is no mere self-improvement book, with a wimpy mandate to transform its readers into "nicer" people. Instead, it's a collection of illustrations and advice that suggests a way to change your entire outlook on life and, in the process, open up a new realm of possibility. Consider, for example, the practice of "Giving an A," whether to yourself or to others. Not intended as a way to measure someone's performance against standards, this practice instead recognizes that "the player who looks least engaged may be the most committed member of the group," and speaks to their passion rather than their cynicism. It creates possibility in an interaction and does away with power disparities to unite a team in its efforts. Or consider "Being the Board," where instead of defining yourself as a playing piece, or even as the strategist, you see yourself as the framework for the entire game. In this scenario, assigning blame or gaining control becomes futile, while seeking to become an instrument for effective partnerships becomes possible.
Packed with such examples of personal and professional interactions, the book presents complex ideas on perception and recognition in a readable, useable style. The authors' combined, eclectic experience in music and painting (as well as family therapy and executive workshops) infuses their examples with vibrant color and sound. The relevance to corporate situations and relationships is well developed, and they don't rely on dry case studies to do it. Indeed, this book assumes the emotional intelligence and desire to engage of its reader, promising access to the rewards of that door-opening notion--possibility--in return. --S. Ketchum
Book Description
Presenting twelve breakthrough practices for bringing creativity into all human endeavors, The Art of Possibility is the dynamic product of an extraordinary partnership. The Art of Possibility combines Benjamin Zander's experience as conductor of the Boston Philharmonic and his talent as a teacher and communicator with psychotherapist Rosamund Stone Zander's genius for designing innovative paradigms for personal and professional fulfillment.
The authors' harmoniously interwoven perspectives provide a deep sense of the powerful role that the notion of possibility can play in every aspect of life. Through uplifting stories, parables, and personal anecdotes, the Zanders invite us to become passionate communicators, leaders, and performers whose lives radiate possibility into the world.
Download Description
The Art of Possibility offers a set of breakthrough practices for creativity in all human enterprises. This inspirational book is a synthesis of Rosamund Stone Zander's knowledge of cutting-edge psychology and Benjamin Zander's experiences as the conductor of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra. Infused with the energy of their dynamic partnership, the book joins together Ben's extraordinary talent as a mover and shaker, teacher, and communicator with Rosamund's genius for creating innovative paradigms for personal and professional fulfillment. In lively counterpoint, the authors provide us with a deep sense of the powerful role that the notion of possibility can play in every aspect of our lives. The Zanders' deceptively simple practices are based on two premises: that life is composed as a story ("it's all invented") and that, with new definitions, much more is possible than people ordinarily think. The book shifts our perspective with uplifting stories, parables, and anecdotes. From "Giving an A" to the mysterious "Rule Number 6" to "Leading from Any Chair"--the account of Ben's stunning realization that the conductor/leader's power is directly linked to how much greatness he is willing to grant to others--each practice offers an opportunity for personal and organizational transformation.

The Art of Possibillities.......2007-10-11
I had seen the DVD prior to reading the book so was visually aware of what was being written about. I think the book brought out more details from both authors. As I now reflect on what I received from reading this book I believe 'humility' stands out. Rule #6 has life changing value. Also that there exist possibilities of greatest actualization and service beyond perfection and self. A must read book.
inspirational.......2007-09-28
This book continues to change my life. I loved their key phrases to remember their ideas. I suggested it to many of my teacher friends and people on our board of education - where money is so tight and so many cuts are being made -this book inspires you to the many possibilities you can create.
Reshaping the "box".......2007-09-06
This book is thought provoking and stimulating. It is not an easy read, but definately gives you the tools to seek new ways of viewing almost any situation in a more positive light. I highly recommend this to anyone who is ready to not to merely think outside of the box, but reshape their box entirely.
No change without leadership.......2007-08-27
There is no change without leadership at all levels. This book is a good introduction into the principles of transformational leadership. Creating Possibilities for others such that they are touched moved and inspired. The leadership theory is based on leading oneself not others and focuses on who you are being not what you are doing. This is not a book about manipulative Machiavellian techniques rather it's about creating free choice for others where they are inspired by the possibility you have created.
A personal growth book for the nearly-jaded.......2007-08-16
I've been reading books for years now that are designed to inspire and lead one toward personal growth in relationships, in the workplace, in life in general. I'm a junkie for this kind of book, and therefore I've become somewhat jaded as well, never really expecting anything new but always hoping. What a delight, therefore, to be utterly surprised by THE ART OF POSSIBILITY. This book delivers! The Zanders' approach is revolutionary, shining real light amongst the plethora of jingoistic motivational books that abound these days. There is nothing self-centered or bumper stickerish or rah-rah cheerleady in this book. It has real depth, it never skims the surface or lets us off the hook. Benjamin is conductor of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra. Rosamund is a painter and therapist. They bring their stunning creativity and imagination into real life -- their lives -- and show us how we, too, can compose and conduct our lives, paint our future. It's an exciting book, one that I've now read three times and underlined and highlighted and excerpted onto sticky notes for my computer and mirror and calendar. No wonder they are being called on to speak to leading business and professional groups.
Product Description
To move ahead in your career you need to be concerned about many issues that are not taught in school or the company handbook. What You Don't Know and Your Boss Won't Tell You covers a wide range of topics explored candidly by experienced female executives who learned how to navigate the unspoken and often debilitating rules of corporate life. This book will show you how to actively manage your career, communicate in the language of business, find leadership opportunities and good mentors, and develop a personal style that projects confidence and competence. The book also shows how you can handle the nuances of dating, emotions, and office politics, how to understand the rigors and rules of business travel, and ways to balance work and family comfortably. Unlike other books geared toward women on how to succeed in corporate life, What You Don't Know and Your Boss Won't Tell You offers specific advice from a group of successful female executives that will help empower women to take charge of their careers, instead of letting their careers take charge of them.

What you don't know and your boss won't tell you.......2007-09-07
This book really didn't tell me anything that I didn't already know. Kind of dry.
Current & Accurate, I identified with every page.......2006-08-26
Worth a read for all females in business (and males for that matter). It covers the stuff that you usually wonder about -- and confirms how you should handle those situations. I'll pass it along to my friends for sure.
If you're entering the workplace.......2006-03-24
Drawing from her 30 years of business experience and personal interviews with 35 women executives, Pamela Lenehan offers a practical perspective on the "unwritten rules" for getting ahead in the corporate workplace.
Lenehan shares helpful advice for career novices by acknowledging that career management is a personal responsibility. One has to rely on more than just hard work in order to get ahead. A successful professional must also balance the sound use of self-promotion, good communication, personal leadership, relationship building, and a solid understanding of the corporate culture. Workplace hazards such as dating co-workers, emotional displays, attire, business travel and worklife balance are also covered adequately in subsequent chapters.
While the book helps readers navigate the turbulent waters of corporate politics and relationships in the workplace, the author's repetitive use of quotes and qualitative approach to the research made it difficult for me to follow the logic in her arguments. I found myself putting the book aside often, attempting to make sense of how the quotations and experiences of these unknown women Lenehan interviewed had relevance for me personally.
At times, language like "a significant minority of the women... confused me since significant minority seems like a contradiction. Although the takeaways nicely summarize the content, I found the "career-limiting moves" unnecessarily restrictive when they cautioned the reader to "never" take certain actions.
In a time where organizations are struggling to attract and retain good employees, it will be interesting to see if the same rules the author discusses in her book will apply in the future, particularly as diversity and inclusiveness rise in importance. Will multicultural employees have to change in order to "fit in" to corporate cultures, possibly losing the precious perspective they offer? Or, will companies change their cultures to truly embrace the value diversity brings rather than expecting talented employees to always "play by the rules"?
Regardless of what the future holds, this book provides valuable insights and suggestions for career management and planning in today's job market.
Armchair Interviews recommends this book for those who are just entering the workplace and desiring to fit into a corporate culture.
Expert Advice from Those Who Know.......2006-03-13
This easy-to-read book is the bible of what you need to know as a younger woman - or man - in the business world. Filled with great advice from senior executives, it provides lessons learned which remind us all what we should, and should not, do to succeed. I am sending it to colleagues and friends as gifts!

useful literature review - poor textbook.......2001-05-14
I used this book as a text for a graduate psychology of education course at the University of Akron where the author teaches.
We probably used this text because the author has control over the course.
The book reads very much like a literature review in a doctoral thesis. If it ever comes out in a second edition, the author should find a decent editor to rewrite it. The style is murky and tedious. The illustrations are crude.
All the key points in this book are covered with greater clarity in any of the standard psychology of learning textbooks along with lists of the key research articles.
If you need to do a literature review in this field, the book could save you a lot of time.
Helpful Insight for Educators.......2001-03-13
Dr. Kay Alderman has distilled many years of teaching and researching into this helpful book. Scholarly, yet very readable, Alderman backs up her assertions and suggestions with sound research findings. Furthermore, she illustrates her points with interesting classroom scenarios. Dr. Alderman's deep concern for educating society's disenfranchised youth comes through clearly. Readers will come away with practical strategies to motivate students and a deeper understanding of why kids often think they don't want to learn.

Does your child frequently holler "Mommmm!" or "Daaaaaad!" at top volume whenever he or she needs help for the most minor of problems? If so, consider your blood pressure lowered: Raising a Self-Starter is bound to come in enormously handy, whether you're maneuvering through the terrible twos or trying to inspire a high-school student to emerge from a senior slump. Ok, so your kid may not grow up to be a doctor (as we are led to believe the stethoscope-wearing girl on the cover apparently will be), but at least you can arm yourself with these tools and tactics for parents who want to help children help themselves.
Author Elizabeth Hartley-Brewer's advice is thankfully based on common sense and is refreshingly free of the jargon so often found in parenting books these days. She includes a personality quiz so parents can determine what kind of child they're dealing with, and encouragement and discipline can then be effectively tailored to maximize the child's self-motivation. For parents looking for a succinct, practical reference for all ages, Raising a Self-Starter promises to make parenting just a little bit easier.

Book Description
Why do American students put less effort into school than those in almost any other industrialized country? The answer, suggests labor economist John Owen, is a startlingly simple matter of economic incentives. For most students, he contends, studying hard is literally not worth the trouble.
Owen explains that for high school graduates without a college diploma or specialized skills, getting a good job depends largely on how well they do in the employment interview--not on how well they did in school. Even for the college-bound, incentives are limited, as many colleges accept students based on their ability to pay rather than their academic standings.
Owen's proposals include:
Encouraging employers to use high school grades, disciplinary records, and other credentials to rank applicants for good jobs
Independent examinations at the national or regional level -- also made available to employers -- that measure academic and other achievements
An Americanized version of the European apprenticeship system to ease the transition from school to work
Allowing greater freedom of choice of students among schools, and schools among students
Why Kids Don't Study offers new solutions to an old problem. As the role of an educated work force in fostering American productivity and international competitiveness continues to occupy the nation's attention, the findings and proposals in John Owen's book are sure to spark discussion and debate.
Book Description
Discovering your individual High Performance Pattern-the distinctive sequence of steps you naturally follow when you are at your best-is the key to energized performance, heightened creativity, and consistent excellence. Jerry Fletcher shows how to discover your High Performance Pattern to sustain outstanding results in a variety of complex, real-life situations.
Customer Reviews:
A great coaching approach........2003-11-08
One of the assumptions in this book is that clients have "high performance patterns." This assumption goes along with what the relatively new field of professional coaching assumes -- clients are creative, resourceful, and fully capable of high performance. The "trick" is to discover what those high performance patterns are. The authors use client stories to draw out these often hidden patterns. I think that's a simple approach that can build deep personal awareness. It's from both this awareness of how one operates best, and the selection of appropriate roles that are a good fit for one's personal high performance patterns, that individuals can truly perform at high levels of excellence. One caveat with this approach, the analysis required to recognize high performance patterns might not be an easy thing for many people to do. Yet, it's very much worth it to look for them. Often, asking several others what they see about your strengths is a great shortcut.
career consultants read this.......2001-08-22
In this original and relevant book, Jerry Fletcher describes how each person has a consistent an unique pattern of high performance. This high performance pattern is a precise description of the unique sequence of steps that an individual consistently follows when he or she carries out an activity that has highly succesful results. The book shows how high performance patterns can be identified and how they can be used (for instance in making career choices, understanding and correcting performance problems and solving conflicts). The book is a joy to read (many examples) and is very recommendable for career consultants.
