4 out of 5 stars Good overall, but a little tedious in the middle.......2005-10-17

This book starts strong, but drags a little in the middle. The book covers coaches from all areas and many of the coaches have similar things to say. The research in the beginning and end are useful and the editors contribute some of the best work in the book. I think it's worth reading but I would skip sections that are not applicable to the area of coaching that you are most interested.

5 out of 5 stars An Incredible Resource.......2005-02-19

Editors Howard Morgan, Phil Harkins, and Marshall Goldsmith have done everyone tremendous service by using their considerable stature and reputation in the Coaching/Leadership field to pull together this amazing list of professionals; as well as sharing their expertise on the topic. The format they've used makes this an immensely useful reference. If you have an interest in executive coaching -- are a senior executive in transition, or are thinking of hiring a coach -- this book belongs on your "must read" list. In fact, make it your next read.

Peter Clayton, Senior producer www.landed.fm

5 out of 5 stars Great book -- very helpful.......2005-01-31

A great survey of the "best of the best." Useful and practical and meets a real need. I particularly liked the format of the book -- mixing the advice of some of the world's best coaches with practical step by step advice.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful, must-read about Executive Coaching.......2005-01-29

If you are a line executive or an HR leader - you will find this book useful. It takes you through the process of selecting the right coach and then allows you the opportunity to hear from the best. This is the best coaching book on the market currently.

Book Description

Building upon the fundamental principles devised by Coach John Wooden, Brian D. Biro presents an accessible system for leadership development. With anecdotes, excercises, and Wooden's philosophy, the author captures the essence of Wooden's Pyramid of Success and the secrets behind each of the pyramid's building blocks.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Captures Wooden's Keys to Success.......2006-02-08

I have always respected the tremendous success of John Wooden and his Pyramid of Success. The UCLA basketball coach who won 10 NCAA Championships in twelve years demonstrated his successful system not by winning basketball games, but by inspiring and directing his players to perform at their highest level and achieve greatness by doing their best.

Brian Biro's book is based on Wooden's Pyramid of Success. In his book, Biro effectively describes and identifies each building block, starting with the key foundations of industriousness and enthusiasm. Biro then illustrates these qualities with entertaining anecdotes of his work as a swimming coach, businessperson, and "life coach."

While Biro's name does not have the prestige of Wooden, he is able to write an entertaining and informative description of Wooden's principles. Moreover, Biro provides the reader with a few useful tips and exercises to help us realize our potential.
In addition to quoting from Wooden, Biro also seems to rely on the work of Tony Robbins as well.

Most readers will appreciate this book. While nothing in here is groundbreaking or revolutionary, it encapsulates the keys to success in any endeavor. You will enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!.......2004-03-09

What a great book! Brian has PASSION for helping and motivating people to success. His style is both warm and uplifting. I love the stories in this book. Brian teaches you how to find meaningful motivation. A must read!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2004-01-06

This is the best book on Wooden I have read.

5 out of 5 stars Wooden's Way.......2003-11-15

I've always admired John Wooden's work as a leader of men. I have his Pyramid of Success on my office wall. Mr. Biro's work has brought the building bricks of the pyramid into focus for me. This a well written work that reaches far beyond the "self help" genre. It was very well organized, inspirational and motivating.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING AND BRILLIANT.......2001-07-30

I have always been a sceptic of the books located in the "self help" section of bookstores. But a friend bought me Brian Biro's book Beyond Success for my birthday and told me i HAD to read it. I didn't plan on it but one day i was lying in bed, and i looked over on my nightstand, and i saw the book there. I decided to give it a try. By the first chapter of this amazing book, i was hooked. Brian Biro is one of the most talented and inspirational author out there today. I HIGHLY recommend this book all people. Parents should read it to their children, teenagers should read it, everone should!!This author if not yet, will definetly become a bestselling author in the near future.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bible for any leader.......2006-05-22

This book, as well as all books by this author, are excellent. They are obviously an good resource for its intended audience of coaches, but it is also useful for any leader. I consider, and recommend this book to others, as my bible for leadership. It is easy to read and understand. The concepts build logically and interact well with each other.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Tool.......2004-05-20

This is very good. Well written, easy to follow, and very practical applications for yourself and your team. Most of this stuff I am going to implement or had already implemented.

For any beginning coach, or coach that is struggling with reaching your players, you must have this book. If your team is underachieving, this book will help. The references to successful coaches and their experiences is really a positive.

The one funny about this book, is how much it refers to Gary Barnett in a positive light. This is kind of ironic based on what is happening to him right now...

Coaches should buy this book...

5 out of 5 stars Winning is not the only thing.......2002-01-03

An excellent resource not only for coaches and those involved in sport activities but also for parents and educators. Janssen and Dale talk about the importance of team building and the real reasons most kids get involved in sports: to have fun and to have social opportunities, among many others. That is not to say that winning is unimportant but rather that it is only one aspect of involvement with sports. A must read for parents and educators who believe winning is the ONLY thing.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not memorable.......2007-07-12

This book provides the kind of insight you have likely heard from several sources. It is good to repetitively hear about how your outward appearance and persona effect the climate around you, but the types of people who read these books are typically the types of people who already practice this stuff.

I feel that this is a positive book. I also feel that this was a waste of money.

5 out of 5 stars Sometimes the solutions are obvious.......2005-01-10

I am always trying to absorb as many viewpoints as I can on the important subject of coaching. My role involves coaching of senior leaders and my own team, so the title of this book urged me to pick it up and read it. However, I was surprised to find that despite the title, this book is really geared towards self reflection and self awareness of ones own opportunities.

The book really gets into depth in examining style. For example, the author looks at the FedEx model of leadership and the nine elements of "style". (Page 37) The book looks at case studies, and how our own personal psychology holds us back. Included are dozens of pages of person questions to answer which are designed to allow for self reflection of what in our lives drives us, and may hinder our ability to effectively perform.

Throughout the book are business case studies, tips, and insights too numerous to list. Among the more impactful are the sections on how to improve communications by slowing down, use of silence and pausing for effect. (Page 136) Also, one can always benefit from a better control of the "minutiae of acting" (Page 145). The author examines how the little aspects of posture, dress, and facial expressions, may impact a leader's effectiveness. While much of this is obvious, the book uses some fascinating examples of how these elements of our "presentation" have bigger impacts than we realize. I personally learned a few new things, despite how frequently I have studied this factor of interpersonal relationships.

The latter sections cover emotional intelligence, something very important to all leaders. Not much new here, but the topic itself is vital to effective leadership, and gets more important the higher the level and responsibility of the position.

Overall, a very useful book. The author uses examples from Pepsi-Co and even names a person I knew while working there. The opportunity for self reflection by completing the pages of questions would be invaluable, and I will go back and complete them myself when time allows. Highly recommended for anyone in a leadership position, or responsible for providing coaching to senior leaders.

4 out of 5 stars Star Secrets Here.......2004-11-26

Benton has the trust of many corporate CEOs. This book shows how she earned it. So many of here secrets are easy to understand, yet they aren't common sense either.

5 out of 5 stars Top Marks.......2003-03-01

As I am putting together a reading list for our management team, this book stands out as one that will be of great value for all managers, old and new. So it's on my list. I give it top marks and highly suggest it.

1 out of 5 stars outdated quick fix recipes for success.......2001-11-03

I am amazed that this type of writing still gets interest. After reading really meaningful books on this subject, like Stephen Covey's 7 Habits or Tom Crane's The Heart of Coaching, I find no place for books that treat this topic with the recipe approach.
After devouting a whole chapter to sell the idea of proffesional coaching, Benton goes on to cite herself incessantly on successful actions she did for herself. She tries to make her points through self refference and other minor examples and cases.
Honestly, I think there are numerous books on this matter out there that really deserve attention. Not this one

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars disappointing at best.......2007-09-26

I am really annoyed by the false reviews. This book does not live up to its title. It contains two Parts, first part is about self improvement and gaining confedence in yourself, the second part is very generic.

This book may have been a collection of free reports put together with a nifty title.

1 out of 5 stars Hype-driven book for people who don't know much about business.......2007-07-09

One of the biggest markets for coaches these days is selling to other coaches. In other words, people who want to help people but don't have a real genuine talent for it. This is one of the more laughable books I've ever read on coaching. But given that one of the authors is featured in that awlful piece of tripe called THE SECRET, there's not much else to say except if you buy into books like these, you truly get what you pay for. If gullible, non-critical thinking people are who you want to serve, then this book is FOR YOU (cue the balloons and streamers now as this review comes to an end....)

1 out of 5 stars Major diappointment.......2007-06-27

I bought this in a group of several books I hoped would help enhance my coaching skills. This book is more about how to start a coaching practice and offered none of what I was after.

5 out of 5 stars Great Information Inside!.......2007-06-15

What's great about this book is you get so much more than you pay for. It's packed full of web sites that offer free information, the authors tell you exactly what to do to become a wildly successful coach and they do it in a fun, exciting way. I get their passion for coaching and it made me want to go out and coach!
Buy it, it's a must have for coaching.
A plus!

Why is coaching so hot now? Because coaching works!! It is really that simple. Terri Levine has been my mentor in my coach training. She has the experience, the skills, the tools and all you need to become a top coach.
Why not learn from the leader in the field? Might as well learn from the best. It is the secret to success, after all!!!

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Practical Guidance.......2007-06-10

      I work in the field of Organizational Development and work a lot with individuals. I have found these concepts powerful and useful when applied with Executives who can be a little difficult. The feedforward concept instead of feedback is smart - no-one likes negative feedback but give me as much positive feedforward a you like! The explanations of why successful people are hard to change was also very useful. I have used these concepts to tell Execs why they will be challenged by the process and acceptance from them has been very high.

      A key thing in my trade is having sound feedback instruments as a benchmark and Marshall talks of this but doesn't mention what he uses. I believe that through his work with Linda Sharkey (Ex GE but now with HP)they used Leadership Impact from Human Synergistics.

      Book Description

      It's not just faulty products and poor fiscal results that can throw an executive into crisis. The more prevalent and pernicious problems are personal in nature. A manipulative or hierarchical boss may be suffering a crisis of confidence; a stressed-out or uninterested colleague may struggle with a crisis of passion.

      According to experienced psychologist and executive coach Alan Downs, these often dormant interior conflicts flare up when the crushing demands of the business world collide with the inner needs of the individual. His new book offers a fresh, eye-opening perspective on how to steer executives back to a successful career path.

      Secrets of an Executive Coach uncovers six crises that cause people to fail. And unlike the prevailing corporate model, which advocates suppressing crises, Downs explains how to confront and resolve them using 11 essential coaching techniques, including role playing, self-imitation, metaphor map, and devil's advocate. These classic methods gain new relevance in this breakthrough approach that puts crisis management at the heart of effective

      Easy and fun to read. Seems to be right on target, and gives a lot of excellent examples to illustrate "secrets".

      ASIN: 0970112130

      Book Description

      An important new book for entrepreneurs who are serious about attaining world class results...

      Every day I'm approached by entrepreneurs and executives who want to get more from their businesses. Of course they want to increase sales, profits and cash flow. They'd also like to be stronger leaders and better managers. They even want to take time off for themselves, once in a while.

      The sad truth is that some people go through their whole working lives without mastering these critical business elements. Others go to great lengths to discover the secrets and learn how to do it for themselves. The payoff when they do? Cash, impact, and above all — satisfaction.

      This book can take years off your learning curve. The ideas and action steps it contains are distilled from over seven years coaching hundreds of executives—in seventeen industries with sales ranging from one million to hundreds of millions of dollars.

      You'll learn the simple yet powerful master secrets of entrepreneurial leaders. Every one of the eighty-four chapters contains detailed, how-to, common-sense strategies, methods, and techniques including:

      How to unleash the spirit that puts your people in overdrive;

      Getting people to do exactly what you want for their own reasons;

      Discovering your highest value contribution and focusing exclusively on that;

      Developing your personal leadership abilities, and how to generate those same abilities in your team;

      The magic of having bigger problems, and how they produce bigger payoffs;

      Finding the very best leaders in your organization and making them even better; Zeroing in on your strengths and zeroing out your weaknesses;

      Playing games for peak performance;

      The secret to creating unstoppable motivation--every single day;

      Using breakdowns to create breakthroughs;

      Turning your business into a no-problem zone;

      Raising unreasonable expectations to produce unreasonable outcomes;

      Changing how you think about change; and,

      How to have more than enough time to do all the important things and only the important things.

      If you applied just one of these 84 simple secrets, it would quickly improve your business and add cash to your bottom line. But imagine if you took the time to master two, three, or more. What if you piled secret on top of secret on top of secret—the impact on your business could well be incalculable. And while many of these ideas are different than what you've done until now, none of them are difficult.

      However, I feel it is only fair to warn you...

      This book is not for everybody. While the chapters are short - most are one or two pages, and none is more than five - to get the most out of it you will have to do some work. There are checklists to follow, questionnaires to fill in, and some of the chapters even contain exercises for the reader. So if you are looking to be spoon-fed some tired, old business pablum which isn't going to make a difference anyway, you probably don't want to get this book--since it will just end up gathering dust on your bookshelf.

      On the other hand, I don't think you can find a publication of any kind that will be more intriguing, informative, and profoundly profitable—if you are willing to make it work for you. I don't care how successful you are right now—this book will help you massively grow your business.

      By the way, this book only contains solutions. It does not have any war stories, mini-biographies or tales of corporate derring-do. I didn't think you had any time to waste, so I left them out.

      4 out of 5 stars 84 short lessons on business leadership.......2002-02-25

      84 short lessons which can be read independently. Each lesson is mainly a short advice, including some common sense. It will not make you a MBA, but it certainly gives you series of inspiring ideas and thoughts. Some live examples would have lifted this book to the top. Forget about moving cheese. Buy it, read it, act it.

      4 out of 5 stars Solid, high-octane advice.......2001-09-08

      This value of this book is its succinct nature and spin on thought. The majority of the advice presented by Mr. Lemberg is valuable and viable. However, Mr. Lemberg indicates that these changes will move one through the journey "faster" than the changes one faces. In my opinion, this is placing the cart before the horse. Understanding the processes of traveling the path is the lesson within the journey. If one has walked the path but not learned its lessons, one will surely fail when faced with the potentially daunting issues that lie in everyday life and business. Consequently, Mr. Lemberg has put his theories AHEAD of the lessons. This is not the logical path, thus 4 stars instead of 5.

      That said, Mr. Lemberg has many, many wonderful thoughts, theories, concepts and exercises. I believe wholeheartedly that most individuals can benefit from this book. Regardless whether one uses Mr. Lemberg's advice to the letter or molds a concept to fit a current issue, this book presents new ideas and solutions to old and ever-present problems.

      4 out of 5 stars Solid Questions and Assignments to Improve Your Focus.......2001-07-07

      Review Summary: All of the material in this book is valuable, and for many people the workbook assignments here will represent the first time these issues have been formally addressed. As a result, most people will find themselves paying more attention to higher payoff areas and overcoming procrastination.

      The book has two weaknesses. First, it treats almost all of the changes needed in order to make an enterprise more successful as ones related to attitude. Most businesses need more guidance for dealing with the actual business environment challenges they face if they are to make breakthroughs. Second, the title is misleading. This book will speed you up, but will not necessarily cause you to move faster than the changes you are dealing with in the external environment.

      Review: Mr. Lemberg explains that this book is intended to be "a practical handbook, a detailed how-to book . . . ." You need to practice these many changes in order to be successful, and the book is designed to coach "you through the practice." As a result, a "strong purpose and clear intentions" should emerge.

      Mr. Lemberg guarantees his book. If after reading and applying it you are not getting accelerated results, you can write to him and he will refund the price of the book. So the risk is all on his end!

      The book contains 84 points with explanations. These are built around the concepts of Fast . . . Preparation, Thinking, Spirit, Talking, Direction, and Action. One of the book's strengths is that it helps you diagnose how well focused you are now, and where you need more attention before beginning to reshape your thinking. Faster Than the Speed of Change causes you to think about how to remove mental barriers, then establish your hierarchy of values, communicate more effectively with others, keep your focus, track your progress, and taking massive consistent action. The points are usually illustrated from fictional characters, such as the scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz.

      The content of these points nicely match up with the source material in books like Think and Grow Rich, The Power of Positive Thinking, and Awaken the Giant Within. There are also some references to mainline business thinkers.

      If you also need help with establishing a business strategy, you might want to read this book in conjunction with a book that focuses squarely on that subject such as Leading the Revolution.

      While this book will probably help you speed your progress, I'm not sure that it will cause you to move faster than the changes in the external environment. In fact, if you don't expand the range of ideas that you are working on, the book may speed your implementation of the wrong ideas in many cases. As long as you quickly recover from when that bias to action leads you astray, that will not be fatal. But you will have lost ground over someone who is leading the innovation in your industry by having a better fix on what needs to be done.

      After you have read this book and done the exercises in it, I suggest that you also take the time to think through your personal and spiritual life in the same dimensions. Otherwise, your focus on your career purposes will tend to crowd out your other reasons for being.

      Capture more of the potential from life . . . in all of its dimensions!

      5 out of 5 stars A Breakthrough Book about Breakthrough Success.......2001-01-03

      Do you want to make your business a runaway success? Do you want to achieve breakthroughs that place your company in front of the pack? Do you want to achieve outsize goals? Then this is the book for you. It discusses breakthroughs and defines lists and questions to guide your thinking about your business.

      Breakthroughs

      To be faster than the speed of change, you must develop breakthroughs in ALL aspects of your business. The author states you need to overhaul your:

      - THINKING - about vision, beliefs and problem solving

      - SPIRIT - by which he means values and purpose

      - TALKING - to make declarations and commitments, and to pursue actions

      - DIRECTING - which involves strategy, leverage, excellence and balance

      - ACTIONS - emphasizing accountability and measurement

      Lists

      You do this primarily through lists. If you have a problem, you make a list of possible actions to take to remedy the situation. If you want to think creatively, make a list of possibilities. Thus, he asks you, as reader, to make lists about your:

      - BELIEFS - which have a big impact on what you do

      - VALUES - together with rules defining them, and practices to live by these values

      - CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTORS

      - IMPORTANT ACTIONS, etc.

      After you make a list, prioritize it. The top priority item should be first and the lowest priority item should be last - or perhaps removed from the list. Hard thinking is required here.

      Question Answering

      In certain areas, the author guides the reader with a series of questions to be answered. He uses this approach for thinking about tough subjects, such as:

      - Vision

      - Purpose

      - Problem Solving

      YOUR Book

      There is very little exposition in this book. Most chapters are 1 or 2 pages long. You can read the whole book in one sitting. But this will do you no good. It is not a book for reading, but a catalyst for acting. If you are not ready to apply yourself by making the lists and answering the questions, don't pick up the book.

      But if you mean business, follow what the author suggests, create the lists and answer the questions. The result will be a thorough re-thinking and re-energizing of your business. It will then become possible to innovate faster than the speed of change.

      Unlike conventional books, this book is not for reading, but for doing. And if you do it, you will essentially be writing YOUR book about YOUR business.

      Faster than the Speed of Change is an excellent, unusual book. Buy it only if you are serious about achieving runaway success and are prepared to spend months to write YOUR company book.

      5 out of 5 stars A book for the "Just Do It" crowd.......2000-10-26
