Book Description
Today, technology has become too much a part of overall corporate success for its effectiveness to be left to chance. The stakes are too high. Fortunately, the idea of 'quality management' is being reinvigorated. In the last decade process programs have become more and more prevalent. And, out of all the available options, three have moved to the top of the chain. These three are:
- The 9001:2000 Quality Management Standard from the International Standards Organization;
- The Capability Maturity Model Integration from the Software Engineering Institute; and
- Six Sigma, a methodology for improvement shaped by companies such as Motorola, Honeywell, and General Electric.
These recognized and proven quality programs are rising in popularity as more technology managers are looking for ways to help remove degrees of risk and uncertainty from their business equations, and to introduce methods of predictability that better ensure success.
Process Improvement Essentials combines the foundation needed to understand process improvement theory with the best practices to help individuals implement process improvement initiatives in their organization. The three leading programs: ISO 9001:2000, CMMI, and Six Sigma--amidst the buzz and hype--tend to get lumped together under a common label. This book delivers a combined guide to all three programs, compares their applicability, and then sets the foundation for further exploration. It's a one-stop-shop designed to give you a working orientation to what the field is all about.
Customer Reviews:
More aimed for managers/laymen........2007-08-06
I bought this book to familiarize myself with process engineering concepts prior to taking a position as a semiconductor process development engineer. This book is not very useful for engineers, but is useful for managers or laymen who need a basic concept/understanding for Quality Control Systems.
Other than that, it is very easy to read.
Should be required "first reading" for process improvement..........2007-01-14
I've had the dubious "pleasure" of reading process improvement books that would make your eyes bleed. Fortunately, this isn't one of them... Process Improvement Essentials: CMMI, Six SIGMA, and ISO 9001 by James R. Persse. This is a perfect "first look" at the subject for someone who doesn't yet know what they don't know...
Contents:
Part One - Process and Process Improvement: Introduction; The Case for Process; Establishing Your Process Program; Sustaining Process Improvement
Part Two - Three Major Process Improvement Standards: ISO 9001:2000; The Capability Maturity Model Integration (For Development); Six Sigma; Considerations For Adoption
Index
The problem with many books on this subject is that they dive into the details of a specific program before you really understand *why* you're doing this in the first place. That's fine for someone who has already decided on a particular approach, but it's completely unsuited to someone who really just needs to get a broad overview. Persse solves this issue by starting out with a high-level look at Process Improvement... why it's necessary, how it works, and how it's best implemented. Based on his years of experience, he is able to point out the mindsets and approaches that will either jumpstart or doom a process improvement initiative. Only after the reader has the mental framework does he introduce details on the three major process improvement frameworks commonly seen in the market today. There's enough detail in each of the chapters to understand how the framework functions and what it's designed to resolve, but not so much that the reader (at the targeted level) decides it's all too complicated and walks away. After reading this book, you should know what it is that you don't know, have an idea as to what areas to focus on, and be prepared to take *intelligent* next steps. And before you decide to sink hundreds of thousands of dollars into a program, that's a great place to be starting at.
I'd consider this "required reading" for anyone contemplating a process improvement initiative. Time and dollars invested here will ensure much better value for the money you'll end up spending down the road...
PI book review.......2007-01-09
This is a good book if you're not bound to a specific model/framework. It gives recommendation for CMMI, Six Sig and ISO process frameworks. Easy read.
Great introduction; Easy to read.......2006-12-11
This book was very easy to read and understand. Unlike other books out there, this book didn't put me to sleep. It's well organized and got me up to speed very quickly. I needed a quick introduction to CMMI since taking my new job.
An engaging overview of the field of process improvement.......2006-11-11
There are currently three major international standards in process improvement: CMMI, ISO 9001, and Six Sigma. In the past, I have had a hard time finding insights about the commonalities and differences between these three standards. Most of books and instructors focus on one of these standards. Luckily, I stumbled on this book.
I have never expected a process book to be that interesting and entertaining to read! I found the author's style very engaging; most of the book, except pieces covering specific details of each standard, is *not* "dry" or boring, which I can't say about other process books that I looked at. Secondly, the author's knowledge and experience make everything logical and convincing, even comforting.
The book consists of two parts. The first one is filled with real life examples designed to show an executive or a skeptic (in my past past experience, these words were synonyms) that process must be managed and can be improved. In other words, if one wants a business to succeed, he better understands the processes comprising that business, monitors and measures them, and improves these processes continuously.
The second part of the book is split into three chunks: CMMI, ISO 9001, and Six Sigma. Each of these three chapters have an excellent overview of a standard's history, its main gist, and the differences with the other two standards, as well as a concise descriptions of its concepts and components.
This book will be a pleasant surprise for those who don't have time to compile numerous sources on the topic, or who fall asleep reading traditionally written process books.

Review of Standardization Essentials.......2001-09-28
Standardization Essentials, Principles and Practice, Steven M. Spivak and F. Cecil Brenner, published by Marcel Dekker, Inc. New York, NY
Review by Ken Krechmer, Technical Editor, Communications Standards Review
Standardization Essentials is an introductory text on the development (standardization) and use of standards that define similarity. Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, repetitive manufacturing processes have been used to economically produce similar things. The standards associated with such manufacture may be termed similarity standards. This book clearly develops and explains the economic advantages of creating and using similarity standards to increase the size of served markets and decrease the per unit cost of manufacture. Although the focus of this book is on North American standardization, there is considerable discussion of the value and importance of world wide standardized manufacturing and the international standardization organizations associated with similarity standards. The important issues of conformity assessment (testing to insure conformance with similarity standards), ISO 9000 (quality management system) and ISO 14000 (environmental management system) standards are addressed. There is a good introductory chapter on both ISO standards series, and an excellent contributed chapter on implementing ISO 9000 in a medium size chemical company.
More than half the book is devoted to 18 independent articles (some previously published), 15 from different people with broad experience in the standardization industry and three from the authors. These articles offer a wide view of current aspects of standardization and are quite interesting to read. These articles range over different manufacturing fields: air conditioning, tires, information technology, automotive and chemicals; they address standardization from multiple vantage points: consortia, US Department of Defense, consumer product safety, developing countries, laboratory accreditation, trade barriers and product procurement. Some of the articles are very descriptive and all are helpful to understand the different views of similarity standards and standardization.
Standardization Essentials concludes with a copy of a US Government document: Office of Management and Budget revised Circular A-119 (1998) on the federal use and development of voluntary standards. Considering that such documents are available over the Internet, it is not clear why the authors chose to include it. The book offers a listing of some of the more significant formal standardization and related organizations in North America and some regional and international standardization and related organizations. But only names are provided. no contact information. Considering how rapidly most standardization committees are moving onto the Internet, the lack of web addresses and pointers is quite surprising and reduces the value of the book as a starting point for further study.
In summary, Standardization Essentials only partially fulfills the promise of its title, offering a view (although a good one) of just similarity standards. It does not address unit of measure standards and the related metrology (e.g., calibration) issues, and addresses only slightly compatibility standards and the related communications issues.

Book Description
Project managers who regard hall monitors and drill sergeants as role models need to spend some time with Essentials of Project Control. This book civilizes and humanizes the conventional view of control. No longer the bad boy in a manager's plan-organize- direct-control job description, modern control envelops us like the wise advice of a country doctor. We readily comply with the doctor's sensible prescription because it is good for us, and it works.
Essentials of Project Control contains 13 articles published between 1985 and 1998 in the Project Management Journal® and PM Network®. Chosen and organized by Pinto and Trailer, the two-to-ten page selections are best read consecutively. There is a thoughtful integration of ideas, and the articles flow and build nicely upon each other. This is the second book in Project Management Institute's (PMI®) Editors' Choice Series, a reprint series designed to supplement the Project Management Body of Knowledge.
Customer Reviews:
The basics and the essentials - great collection of articles.......2002-06-29
Project managers of all skill levels will find something useful in this collection of past articles from Project Management Journal and PM Network (Project Management Institute's quarterly professional journal and monthly magazine). As the title implies, the articles are about various aspects of project controls, with an emphasis on earned value and related techniques.
No book about project controls would be complete without a chapter on controlling scope creep, which is the topic of Chapter 1. However, this article has a unique perspective that shows how it's "Not Necessarily a Bad Thing". The next two chapters provide broad views of project controls, with a collection of best practices for technology projects in Chapter 2, and a bottom-up approach in Chapter 3. Rework cycles are covered in chapters 4 and 5. The inclusion of these chapters adds much to this book because rework is not a mainstream topic, yet it has everything to do with controlling cost, quality and schedule. I like the succinct treatment of critical success factors across the life cycle that is provided in Chapter 6.
The remainder of the book addresses earned value project management and related controls. The articles that cover earned value project management are thorough and complete. Each should be carefully read. I was delighted to see Stephen Devaux's "When the DIPP* Dips: A P&L Index for Project Decisions" in this collection. DIPP is [Devaux's] Index of Project Performance. This index is aimed at project selection and prioritization techniques, and is particularly useful in product-based projects because it computes the cost of lost opportunity and the impact of being late to market. For internal projects it provides a clear link to business imperatives, which can bridge the gap between IT and the business. As an aside not related to this book, Devaux has found flaws in the way earned value's schedule performance index can mislead.
Chapters 10-13 wrap up the book with articles on planning for crises, avoiding large-scale IS project failures, an analysis of cost overruns on defense acquisition contracts and project monitoring for early termination.
This carefully selected collection of articles covers all of the major issues, challenges and techniques associated with project control. If you want to master the complexities of earned value project management I recommend "Earned Value Project Management (2nd edition) by Quentin W. Fleming and Joel M. Koppelman. I also strongly recommend reading "Total Project Control: A Manager's Guide to Integrated Project Planning, Measuring, and Tracking" by Stephen A. Devaux, which will provide a complete and comprehensive approach to controlling projects, including portfolios of projects at the program management office level.

Too simple.......2000-12-19
I've generally found AMACOM books to be very good. This is a good book, just very simple, as I suspect are all of the books in the WorkSmart series (I've read 3). You can read this completely in one evening.
If you've never heard of TQM, this book will have some value to you. If you've read anything on TQM, you have probably covered most of what's in this book. A good "second" book, that you can read in place of this or following, is "Principles and Practices of Organizational Performance Excellence", by Thomas Cartin, an excellent book.
TQM made simple!!.......1999-03-12
Dr. Williams' approach to the concepts of TQM are easy to understand and simple to follow. I couldn't put the book down. I've passed out many copies to business associates and friends. This book should be on EVERY executives desk!!
