This book is adorable. It is great for children who speak Spanish or English!
excellent.......2007-01-15
This is a great book for the beginner child. very short and easy read. i highly recommend
Great series for all levels!.......2007-01-11
I am bilingual and am raising my son bilingual, too. This is an excellent book and series with adorable pictures, and each page has both english and spanish on it. The back includes pronunciation guides for all the vocabulary (both for english and spanish) which is helpful for my husband, a non-native speaker. It's very hard to find quality bilingual books- I've looked around a lot and loved these so much I have even given them as gifts to friends who want to introduce their kids (and themselves) to the language.
GREAT book for early Spanish learning.......2006-07-04
Normally I would say that my daughter is a little old for this type of book. At 5 she is a bit beyond little board books without many words. But for laying a foundation for Spanish, this book is just what both she & I need. The simple sentences allow us to see what exactly each word means, as well as get an intuitive grasp on the grammer, and the pronunciation guide in the back is VERY helpfull.
I know that we will quickly move beyond this book, but for now I view it as essential for our grasping Spanish. In fact, I plan on buying the other books in this series.
My Family andI?Mi Familia Y Yo.......2002-10-22
This is another book that I enjoyed by this author. My children have asked me to continue to purchase this books and they read them all the time. I see the joy and excitement on their faces as they say different words in Spanish and actually know the meaning. I feel that it is important for the and myself to learn a second language, and books like these have been able to serve as a base for my entire family. It's easy to read and grasp, and a good reference to look at when necessary. Keep up the great work Gladys and I'll keep reading your books. Learning is a continuous process and now it's become really fun!

Book Description
An effective, unusual 34-word story of the beginnings of a friendship, accompanied by wild and wonderful illustrations. Against pastel backgrounds, in vibrant, colorful images, an African-American boy and a white boy meet on the street. [Their] one- and two-word exchanges on each spread lead to a tentative offer of friendship, sealed as both boys jump high in the air and yell Yow!" With a beautifully balanced, economical style, the book illumines the peaks and pitfalls of getting acquainted, and puts in a good word for brotherhood as well." --School Library Journal, starred review

YO! YES?.......2007-10-13
I used this book as a spring-board for a punctuation unit. My students loved it. I typed the text up sans punctuation and read the book to my students. They put the punctuation (type and place) where they thought it should go.
Fantastic!.......2006-12-17
This book beautifully illustrates the delicate birth of a friendship and the vast importance of body language in communication. Because the text is so sparse the reader has to take the two boys posture and facial expressions to find the correct context. I read it to preschoolers as part of our social skills curriculum. Being able to correctly assess another's emotions is an important skill that preschool age children are beginning to aquire. They are also very interested in starting new friendships. This makes this book a timely story to read to preschool children.
Great foreign language book!.......2006-09-12
When I first saw this book I immediately purchased it at the Scholastic book fair. I then translated it in French & Spanish (available upon request!). It makes a great beginning ESL book as is & foreign language pronoun and pronunciation book because of its simple question/answer and comment structure between two buddies, appropriately of different ethnic/racial backgrounds. Kids really respond to this (& even adults!) in foreign language classrooms, wanting to mimic the dialogue. I often separate the class (left/right or boys/girls) to do so. Great fun way to memorize dialogue and learn proper intonation.
great book.......2005-08-02
children can read into this book and make great predictions as to what is happening in the book!
Great concept.......2001-12-15
"Yo! Yes?" is a unique picture book that uses only 31 words, usually no more than 2 on a page, to tell a whole story involving two boys who discover they can be friends. Beautiful in its simplicity, the book also makes good use of Raschka's expressive art style. Indeed, the book is his masterpiece; since then he has applied his visual talents to a series of minor disasters, among them the picture books "Arlene Sardine" and "Like Likes Like." It's a shame that his reputation has had to dwindle so, but I still keep hoping he will come up with another good one like this. He has done a sequel called "Ring! Yo?" which is slightly more complicated than this one.

The best way to learn the American presidents that I have seen.......2006-06-23
This book is the best and most fun ways to learn about the American Presidents that I have ever seen. For each president from Washington through Clinton, there is a brief caption regarding his life and accomplishments. There is also a drawing taken from a photo or portrait, a cartoon style drawing and associated play on words to aid in remembering the name and whom they succeeded. For example, the cartoon for Dwight Eisenhower shows the Eiffel Tower with eyes on it being held by a tree with eyes. The caption is "The tree-man is crawling up the side of a huge tower that has eyes on it. It must be the eyes-on-tower!" The cartoon for Harry Truman, who preceded Eisenhower, shows the tree-man.
One of the best books for learning history and social studies, I strongly recommend this book. If my children were of a suitable age, I would buy it for them.
Awesome.......2005-10-06
After one night, I knew all 43 presidents of the United States in order without looking. This book is AWESOME!!! :D
Memories Last.......2005-06-29
I had to memorize the presidents in the fourth grade. I'm in college now and I can still remember everything from this book. Not only does it work, but it's fun to look at the pictures and learn the presidents. People of all ages can learn from this book.
Best way to memorize the presidents.......2004-09-11
For years, I have tried to get my reluctant memory to soak up the list of US presidents -- even using goofy mnemonic pictures from GENERAL memory books.
That picture stuff doesn't work, I thought.
I was wrong. After a few days of browsing through the funny memory cartoons and doing the quizzes, I know the presidents cold. And so will you.
I got my child to read this book with me as it's not supposed to be a "grownup" way to study the US presidents. Baloney! It's a great memory book for readers of all ages.
Unbelievable!!!!!!!.......2004-04-01
I am in a presidential class at a Univeristy and I had to learn all the presidents for class. I checked out the book and read it and within about 20 minutes i could write all 43 presidents from memory. This is unreal it really works!!!!

Our Family Loved It! .......2007-10-05
Great gift! ...my son loves the "World Almanac" books so this was just perfect for him. We played this on our way to Maine in the car and had a blast. Fun, graphic format and easy to read. You just might learn a thing or two as well! My only complaint? I wish it was longer!
My kids LOVE this book!.......2007-05-29
These quizzes are interesting enough for kids, yet challenging enough for adults. My family has spent many hours in the car trying to choose the right answers (most are multiple choice) to these interesting questions, but now we have finished the entire book. When is the next one coming out?!!
My 8yo son loves this book.......2007-01-16
He is a great reader, but has gotten bored with many of the typical fare. He loves anything with lists and games- and this has both. He and his friends had a blast asking everyone to go through the quizzes to decide on "what house you will live in" (eg Winsdor Castle or White House), or "what type of weather storm you would be"...
Customer Reviews:
A great way to memorize!.......2003-05-06
If a silly picture of a gust of wind blowing down Main Street doesn't do anything for you, you've never read "Yo, Sacramento!" It should remind you that Augusta is the capital of Maine. The whole book is a marvelous mix of funny mnemonic cartoons with interesting facts about the states and capitals. My eight year old daughter loves this book and its companion, "Yo, Millard Filmore!"; she memorized the Presidents in a few minutes and the states/capitals in a couple days. And although I hate to admit that I couldn't remember them from my school days, the books helped me learn them too. (I don't know about the "never forget" part, but it does stick with you, and it's easy to pick back up.) When we showed these books to my family, my niece (the daughter of a social studies teacher) even told me she thought it was too easy; it must be cheating somehow to learn them this way!
I have to say, however, I prefer the Millard Filmore book to the Sacramento one, primarily because 'Millard' is designed as a series -- an element from each picture is carried into the next in order to reinforce the historical sequence. This not only teaches the sequence, but it helped me with the actual memorization -- I know I haven't left any presidents out. 'Sacramento' is a group of unconnected pictures, which may connect the capitals to their states -- and generally link the states with their geographic region, but doesn't guarantee you have all the states. ("Oops! I only counted 47! Which ones did I leave out?") If I could wish for anything besides additional titles in this series, it would be that 'Sacramento' could be rewritten to link the states together from east to west or alphabetically or even in order of admission to the union, so you end up with all 50 states in your brain.
Our wonderful United States.......2001-03-29
Yo, Sacramento! is a humorous incentive to learn the capitals for every state. The word pictures which aid memory recall are sure to prompt hearty laughter. The fast-paced writing style is an added bonus. One can laugh, learn facts, and have state capitals memorized in under 30 minutes!
The best book around to teach states and capitals.......2000-06-13
This book really helps a child or an adult to memorize states and capitals within 20 minutes. I have never come across any program so precise. My kids really enjoy learning with the picture and word association method used in the book. This book should be used in all schools around the world.
A FUN WAY TO LEARN!.......2000-06-02
I bought this for my 3-1/2 year-old son, who has an interest in the United States (thanks to "The Scrambled States Of America"). He really enjoys this book! I must say that I've picked up quite a bit of information myself.
Please write more!.......2000-02-25
I teach school and used the illustrations and catchy phrases to help students learn the states and capitals. It really works! have older students and they need to learn countries and capitals. I would love to see Will Cleveland & Mike Alvarez team up again and write a book to help us memorize these (but maybe not in 20 minutes)!

Book Description
The most popular work by the great Spanish writer Juan Ramón Jiménez (1881-1958), this is a series of autobiographical prose poems about the wanderings in Andalusia of a poet and his donkey. This new, accurate English translation is drawn from the 1917 edition. This is the only dual-language edition available. Introduction, Explanatory Notes.
Customer Reviews:
Platero is a masterpiece that you cannot afford to miss in your lifetime.......2006-07-04
This refers to the spanish edition by Catedra-
The intention of this review is to invite the english speaking world not to miss this wonderful book, luring you into it by sharing my experiences.
Of course we read some chants in primary school since this is considered the jewel of prose literature in spanish literature. Vaguely afterwards I remembered the rhymes as a teeager and forgot them as an adult. Then my son was born and around his age of 8 I started reading him the book. For those of you who are parents, do not underestimate the power of poetry in little kids, he did not understand a word of it at first and was rather unimpressed, later on with a bit of involvement, he began to "get the hang of it" (I love this colorful american expression) to the extreme that we always read it (he is now 13).
As an adult now I understand the beauty and splendour of Platero, the silvery companion of the poet in his travels and daily experiences of Moguer. (Platero is a donkey silver colored). Just as the Quixote became universal being such a "local spaniard", Platero has the same universality. I must agree with the reviewer who expressed that the translation must have been difficult because of the provincial prose.
Platero will open you to new sensitivity horizons, it will make you laugh and cry alike, it will make you look at donkeys in a totally new light for everytime I see one, the fond memories of Platero springs from within.. each chant is a a page or two long, so you can skip some, ponder on others, I strongly recommend to have a donkey stuffed dolls to play with your kids a re-enactment of the chants just read and make your on additions, the laughter and joy of this moments will be undeletable memories.
I lost something inner and spiritual in some time in my life, I recovered it through Platero, Juan Ramón Jiménez is the only poet that I consider an obligation to visit his tomb in Spain and thanks him for the gift he has brought on all of us.
I have several editions of Platero (because I also love the commentaries), in one of them (and I cite from memory), the poet describes a time when after Platero was published, a cherrished elderly maestro revered by the circle of young poets, was on his death bed offering copies of Platero to his friends... on receiving the young JRJ he shook his hand with the stregth of those leaving and he said " its just perfect... but do not grow conceited now.."
Its just perfect, do yourself a favor and take a trip accompanied by Platero, it will last a lifetime.
Nicely done.......2005-12-26
This is a bilingual version of the classic Platero y Yo. It has Spanish on the left and a good English translation on the right. I would highly recommend this edition because Juan Ramon Jimenez can be difficult to read at times because of his use of regional vocabulary.
Book Description
Yo-wee-o! In a milestone picture book, author-illustrator Judith Byron Schachner brings us an inspiring story about making dreams come true, seasoned with a hearty helping of heroic Viking history and lore.
Emma is excited as she starts to read about Erik the Red for a school report on world explorers. The excitement grows to epic proportions when she sets her sights on obtaining a real Viking ship. With a tinfoil helmet, a fighting spirit, and the help of a kindly librarian, she hatches a plan . . . and amazes her entire town when an authentic, dragon-prowed ship arrives in her backyard!
Rich with details and humor in art and text, this is a tale about the magic of discovery and how far imagination, fueled by knowledge, can take one determined little girl.
Customer Reviews:
Great book!.......2007-06-10
My kids love Judy Schachner and her adorable loveable characters. This book is no exception! Fantastic illustrations and a request for "read it again, please."
We love this book!.......2007-01-03
I bought this book for my 3 year old daughter, and she loves it--we read it daily. The story is fun and inspiring -- and based on events that actually happened to the author's family. This book shows that if you truly believe in what you want, your dreams will come true. The illustrations are beautiful and magical. The viking stories that Emma writes are a great jumping off point to learn more about viking history, too.
A fantastic fantasy - that just happens to be true!.......2004-09-14
Emma, the author's own daughter, wanted her own viking ship for her birthday. This wonderful book is an account of how the author came to have a viking ship in her backyard. Fantastic illustrations packed with surprises, this is a must for anyone who knows a special kid!
Wonderful read aloud!.......2004-05-23
I am a teacher for an after school program for elementary students. I read this book to my students and they loved it! The illustrations are wonderful. We made paper Viking Longboats afterwords. They couldn't wait to make their boats and they are still asking for books on Vikings.
Awe and wonder.......2004-04-11
Emma lives in a world of wonder that the cynics and realists have not destroyed. Wonder is a marvelous land of believing where even the adults are wizards and mages. Like Joseph Campbell's hero, Emma is on a mythic adventure. Her quest wins her knowledge, friends, and a gift of epic proportions.
A school assignment on world discoverers expands Emma's universe. She plunders the library, gathers knowledge and soon she becomes Emma the Red, Viking explorer. Yo, Vikings! is a celebration of story telling both oral and written. Emma hears stories from Mr. Sigurd, the children's librarian, and he directs her to the old tales of Norse history and mythology. She reads stacks of books, then takes notes and draws pictures illustrating what she is learning. She then enthralls her younger brother with stories of dragons, Viking longships , and sword fights.
Judith Byron Schachner's tale introduces some major heroes and gods of Norse history and mythology. For her school report, Emma learns about Erik the Red's journey to Greenland and about his son, Leif Eriksson. Emma is proud to report that Leif came to North America 500 years before Christopher Columbus. In story time, Mr. Sigurd, Emma's helper figure, tells the children of Sigurd, the strong and courageous Norse warrior, and his heroic fight against the dragon Fafnir. Mr. Sigurd does not mention the name of the hero. By looking carefully at Mr. Sigurd's book in the illustration, the reader will see that the dragon slaying hero's name is Sigurd. In her journal, Emma shows Sigurd holding a shield that says "librarian" as he fights the dragon Fafnir. The god Odin is introduced as a giver of gifts and riding his eight legged horse, though no mention is made of his grimmer, darker qualities.
Yo, Vikings! explores the childhood experiences of awe and wonder and is appropriate for ages about five to ten. The reader is invited to come along on an adventure with a young, female hero. Emma might hearten children, especially young girls, to learn and read for the joy of the adventure, just when girls need the encouragement. Interestingly, Judith Byron Schachner's fantastic story is a retelling of a family story; her daughter Emma actually did have a Viking ship in the back yard for a number of years. The truth in this story may lead other girls and boys to try new things, to learn for fun, and to believe in their dreams. Yo, Vikings! will inspire readers to do some exploring of Viking lore of their own at the library.
Karen Woodworth Roman
Book Description
"A master of those embarrassing, gloppy, painful, and suddenly wonderful things that happen on the razor's edge between childhood and full-fledged adolescence" (The Washington Post), Newbery medalist Jerry Spinelli has penned his early autobiography with all the warmth, humor, and drama of his best-selling fiction. From first memories through high school, including first kiss, first punch, first trip to the principal's office, and first humiliating sports experience, this is not merely an account of a highly unusual childhood. Rather, like Spinelli's fiction, its appeal lies in the accessibility and universality of his life. Entertaining and fast-paced, this is a highly readable memoir-- a must-have for Spinelli fans of all ages.

Do you want to go on an adventure?.......2007-01-11
Knots in my yoyo strings
By Jerry Spinelli.
From playing baseball to losing girlfriends, playing basketball to making new friends, this is a book written by Jerry Spinelli called Knots in my yoyo strings. It's an autobiography of Jerry Spinelli.
He is a famous writer and has written many other books.
This is one book that I guarantee you will take you on one of the biggest adventures you've ever been on. if you even only read this book halfway through the book will just pull you in and you just cant stop reading it. Plus this book is really popular and over one million people have read it so if you're interested in reading this book then great and if you're lucky sometimes this book has a surprise in it if that kind of person.
My Own KNots.......2006-12-07
Knots rocks my socks. I love this book. Jerry Spinelli really explains what it is like to be a kid and makes me see how he felt when he was a kid
Marvelous Book.......2006-07-11
Knots in my yo-yo string is a great book. This novel is about the one and only Jerry Spinelli and his childhood. The most interesting chapter to me was, When I Was King. The reason that chapter was interesting to me was that,it fun to hear about a great author being elected for class president.I give this book 4 stars out of 5 because, first when i was reading the book, i didn't like it.But as i kept reading the book, i started to like it more when i got to the middle of the book. I recormmend this book to children and adults who likes to biographies. This is a great book about a childhood of the marvelous Jerry Spinelli.
Excellent Recollection of a Writer's Life.......2005-08-03
Knots in My Yo-Yo String is an autobiography of the childhood of the writer Jerry Spinnelli. It was an excellent book. He did not hold anything back as this book showed the ups, downs, hopes, and sadness as a kid. It goes through his childhood and his many houses to his high school graduation. I have enjoyed it very much and I would recommend it to any child or child at heart.
Knots in My Yo-yo String.......2004-07-23
Jerry Spinelli's autobiography is interesting and funny. He takes the reader back to the magical days of his childhood. He was a runner and a sports player. He was the perfectionist who colored inside the lines. He didn't like to read regular books but loved comic books and the sports section in the newspaper. He holds the reader's attention with his attention to detail. While reading about his neighborhood and life, the reader becomes well aware that many of these details are what he uses when he writes his books. If you're lucky, his descriptions remind you of that time in your life when you were young and the most important thing at the moment was watching a turtle cross the road. A well-written, engaging account that middle grade students will be able to relate to. Students should find interest in the fact that much of Spinelli's writing success comes from using the memories of his childhood. The only criticism is with the book's title and cover. Students might need to look beyond these two unexciting items to get started.

Hilarious Fun, but Not for Everyone.......2004-11-24
Stupid snaps, fat snaps, ugly snaps. The list goes on. Here are some typical snaps you may find in this book:
Yo mama so fat, when they hand her a menu at a restaurant she says, "okay."
Yo mamma is so fat, that the tattoo artist called a billboard agency for assistance.
Yo mama so fat, she has her own area code.
Yo mamma so fat, when she turns around people say, "nice to see you again."
Yo mama so fat, the shadow of her butt weighs fifty pounds.
Snaps generally pick on mothers, but it is all in good fun. The original object of the game was to come up with the biggest insult of another person's mother, or other family member, while keeping your cool. The first person to lose his or her temper was the loser.
This is a hilarious book, and Percelay has several others like it. So the fat mamma jokes just keep rolling in, kind of like a tidal wave of lard. While many snaps are fairly clean, some of these may not be suitable for children. Percelay also provides a decent history of the "snapping" tradition in this book.
Yo Mamma So Dumb - She Won't Read This Book.......2004-01-18
"Snaps" is a good book that helps to preserve an oral tradition. It begins with a couple of interesting and well-written essays on the history of "snapping" / "the dozens." From there, it gets on to the really good stuff, the actual insults conveniently divided into sections such as "Stupid Snaps" and "Fat Snaps."
Some of the jokes may seem outdated, but one has to remember that the book was written in 1994 and didn't have the help of all of the people that wrote in with submissions to the later books. Even without that, it's still a quality work.
NOT What You're Looking For.......2002-11-27
This book has intersting tidbits about the history of the "Game of Dozens" and a few of the jokes are gems, but it has too many OLD or BORING jokes that really should've been filtered out.
I don't know how it happened, but all the good jokes ended up in the SECOND "Snaps" book-- none of the others in the series can hold a candle to that one...Just look at its Amazon[.com] ratings compared to all the others. Now THAT book DOES have what you're looking for...funny funny funny insults that you haven't heard before.
"The Dozens" 101.......2002-04-02
"Snapping" is a form of "playing the dozens" which derives from the rich oral history of blacks in America. It's a verbal contest in which two opponents hurl all kinds of insults at each other, the object being to see which one can beat down the other without either of them losing their cool or resorting to physical violence. It does not mean cursing the opponent out; in fact, the most effective snaps, or insults, involve no profanity at all. Percelay, Dweck and Ivey have compiled hundreds of snaps from sources all over the black community and organized them into categories (fat snaps, skinny snaps, stupid snaps, ugly snaps, color snaps... well, you get the idea). A few examples: "Your mother's so fat, she has her own area code" or "Your mother's so fat, when I got on top of her my ears popped" (which is, in effect, a double snap -- she's not only obese, she's a lady of ill repute); or "Your father's so dumb, he leaves his fly open in case he has to count to eleven", or "You were so ugly when you were born, the doctor slapped your mother instead of you." "Snaps" is hilarious and will have you laughing out loud, as well as appreciating the razor-sharp wit of whoever dreamed some of these gems up. Check it out, as well as its companion book, "Double Snaps" -- double the pleasure and double the fun.
Playing The Dozens Is Funny!.......2001-12-15
When I read this book, I was taken back to the days when I was kid, watching people on the corners and in classrooms trying to top each other with the better insults. It was called "playing the dozens", and this book is full of funny "snaps" or insults. Some of them are down and dirty, but still laugh out loud funny. Next time you want a good comeback to tell the next smart aleck that annoys you, read this book.
