Very concise reference material.......2007-10-05
This book is very well organized and contains most of the material needed to pass the exam. It is a great reference book for development as well.
The book teaches you how to make professional web sites........2007-09-09
Before writing of this review I have read some rumours about the book. Some people say it does not cover all the details for the exam itself. Again as with 70-536 Training Kit from the same set I have found out that the contrary is true. It is a very good book that concentrates on main aspects of .NET web development. Even a beginner after reading the book is able to use EVERY important functionality. Of course if you are a professional you have to study and develop yourself your .NET web applications at least in order to confirm and assure what you have learned. Again the book is very self-motivating. Probably that is also the main reason why some in-depth details are missing at right places and moments. The book has all you need to master the technology and exam itself.
2 many authors........2007-09-04
This review is about the unfortunate disparity in abilities of the 2 authors: Glenn Johnson and Tony Northrup.
Johnson is a nice surprise to those who read microsoft training manuals. He anticipates reader's problems and never leaves you frustrated.
Northrup is the opposite. His chapters are irritatingly lacking in necessary examples and thorough explanations. You cannot avoid the notion that he is taking the easy way out. At times I believe I can hear his X-Box 360 running in the background
In chapter 9, lesson 3 on using WebParts, he admonishes the reader that its up to him to spring ahead many pages to some of the labs at the end of the lesson. He doesn't bother to provide enough of an explanation to do you any good. Mr. Johnson, again, provides both immediate examples and labs.
This is typical.
I don't see how you can avoid being frustrated by this. Carefully crafted explanations followed immediately by examples is the norm. Johnson takes of this, Northrup leaves you constantly throwing your hands up.
I am learning quite a bit, however. You can master much of the elements of Net 2.0 using this book. Be prepared to do additional online research of Mr. Northrups chapters, however.
Passed First Time, but . . ........2007-08-16
I used the book as my principle but not sole source of study material, and I was able to pass the exam today the first time I took it.
The book covers all the * topics * on the exam, but the book alone will not help you to pass.
I credit these factors:
1. Reading the book
2. Doing the lab exercises and case scenarios, especially if it's a topic you're not familiar with.
3. Taking the practice exams on the CD - then clicking the More Info links - you do need to read the info on the MSDN site.
4. Having experience with ASP.NET - I don't see how you can pass without work experience, unless you make lucky guesses
Also, if you come across a question that totally stumps you, just try to reason through it, don't make a blind guess.
Definitely NOT ENOUGH........2007-08-01
I will agree with the other reviewer who said that this book alone is NOT enough to pass the test.
After deciding to take the exam, I searched high and low for books and this was the only 70-528 prep book I could find. I got this book and spent months going over it and taking the practice exams. I could easily pass the practice exam questions before I went in and felt like I had a good grasp of the material. Another reviewer said that they passed the exam despite the fact that they failed the practice exam, and I honestly do not know how they could have passed. Based on co-worker's comparison of the this book and the practice exams for test 70-536, I decided to go in and take the test.
Let me tell you, the book does NOT go into enough detail in either the examples/text/lessons OR the practice exam. I managed to barely pass the exam by the skin of my teeth.. mostly using this book as a basis and all my on the job experience as a supplement. Unless you are a hands on developer with a fair amount of job experience to back you, just using this book to prepare is NOT going to be enough.
Do yourself a favor and have a very thorough grasp on the material or be prepared to throw the money away.

Excellent condition - textbook with library binding.......2005-09-18
The book arrived swiftly and in excellent condition. I did not know what to expect for the library binding, but I have been very happy so far. It is a plain hardcover with a piece (color) of the original softcover professionally glued to the front. The content is exactly as it should be. Much better durability and great quality. Smooth transaction process, no snags and no problems.
It's good, but the discribution of it should be more specific.......2005-09-06
Actually, it's an international version.
Therefore, the saler should mark this on his or her remarks.

A very good marketing book..........2004-03-20
This is a very good book for those that don't have a marketing background. It is relatively short and concise, which made it a quick read. I has most of what is in the larger book (the reference style book), but really does a good job of condensing the material. This is one that I will keep, as it acts like an 800 page reference book, just smaller.

not as good as I hoped.......2007-07-22
This book is an easy read, but I found 3 errors in the first 50 pages :(.
Not very good in my opinion
Excellent tool.......2007-07-07
Excellent tool for your exam 70-526 but in the real world you will need more.
Surprisingly Easy to understand.......2007-03-17
This book was very thorough which is what I expected for a certification book. However, I also found it very easy to understand with nice easy to follow labs.
Excellent tool for 70-526 exam preparation.......2007-02-08
I purchased this kit (book and sample tests) primarily as a study guide to prepare for the 70-526 exam. After studying the book and taking numerous practice tests, I was able to pass the exam on my first attempt, with room to spare. I recommend this product to anyone preparing for the 70-526 exam.
Good way to prepare for the exam.......2007-01-15
This is an excellent study guide for the 70-526 exam; between the discussion in the text and the hands-on labs, you will definitely be prepared for the test. Highly recommended!

I needed 27 copies for a class that was started in a week ... Amazon saved me!!!
Not at all useful.......2007-02-07
The collection isn't of notes or recaps of Kottler's book. It's a glossary. I don't recall learning anything significant readuing a dictionary. At least a dictionary is alphabetized.
I purchased this product because the Kottler book was on back order. I would not use this line again without having first phyiscally reveiwed the contents to see if it could provide information that would resonate.
not a helpful book.......2007-02-07
This book doesnt help, its just keywords and blank papers. I wouldn't buy it again.
New Marketing Concepts from Classical Texts.......2006-07-31

Some new issuse has been included in this edition in depth.
Book Description
A Framework for Understanding Poverty teaches the hidden rules of economic class and spreads the message that, despite the obstacles poverty can create in all types of interaction, there are specific strategies for overcoming them. Through case studies, personal stories and observations that produce some aha! moments, Payne clearly strikes a chord in her readers., and provides a hopeful message.

A Framework for Understanding Poverty.......2007-10-22
The book arrived in perfect condition.
I had a big problem though.
Amazon told me that the shipping would cost $2.90
Seller charged me $8.75
I sent an email but the issue was not resolved.
I wish I would have simply purchased at Barnes and Noble or
Borders- it would have cost me a lot less.
Excellent tool for educators.......2007-10-03
I just went to a one-day workshop on Ruby Payne's book and found it to be extremely valuable. I teach in a school of 2500 students, 30% of whom live in poverty. This book was an excellent tool to teach the concept that students living in poverty (especially generational poverty) often live by a different "code" than the middle class. With that said, our public educational system is largely based on the middle class code, which these students may have a hard time fitting into. Payne gives a great overview of the issues that impoverished students MAY be facing, and I don't think her work can be taken as an "all or nothing" view. Obviously, not every person reacts that same way to any given situation. However, Payne's information opened my eyes to the disparities in my classroom, and gave me a great deal of insight into students' behaviors.
This book does not perpetuate poverty--it gives educators invaluable tools to reach out to and engage our students who are living with the realities of poverty every day.
Everyone should read this book.......2007-09-23
This book is almost a workbook. It presents the culture of poverty in a way that is easy to understand and helpful to all. This should be required reading for teachers.
Beware Ruby Payne.......2007-09-18
This book perpetuates the institutionalized racism and classism that creates students who are unsuccessful in schools. Payne, whose "research" is anecdotal at best, completely unverified at worst, suggests that teachers teach to poverty, instead of fighting the social injustices that cause it. She works from the deficit theory of poverty, which has been widely discredited since the 60s, and her anecdotal examples are racist stereotypes.
This book makes white, middle-class teachers think they understand poverty, when in reality, the advice she gives teachers perpetuates poverty and does nothing to address the complex causes of it. Ruby Payne is laughing all the way to the bank.
A must read for any type of educator/counselor.......2007-09-12
This book presents a comprehensive view of the way people in different areas of society think; what things are important to them, where their priorities lie. It has tools for working within the area the student or client lives and ways to facilitate movement from one area to the next.
Book Description
Human Resources are the most important resource that a firm commands and should be regarded as capital, a factor of production in which managers invest today in order to realize future profits. This book deals with the strategic implications of Human Resource Management as an important strategic asset and emphasizes its importance within the overall strategy of the firm. The book covers issues such as job design, evaluation, recruitment, training, career concern, and outsourcing and downsizing. The linkage between the various pieces of HRM policy are stressed and how the policies are related to management issues such as TQM, just-in-time manufacturing, and others. The book is aimed at the general manager, not the HRM practitioner and it stresses conceptual frameworks, not procedural methodology.
Customer Reviews:
The best book on strategic human resources I have ever read!.......1999-09-20
Baron & Kreps write with wit & grace, pulling together a vast amount of literature to make their point that human resource management is critical to a firm's success. In every chapter, they get to the point quickly, writing for students in a way that faculty will appreciate. They retain the essence of the academic research on which their principles are based, while focusing on what it all means for managers. I highly recommend this book.
A major achievement in an underserved field.......1999-06-13
Essential reading for both general managers and human resource executives, this book breaks new ground in several ways.
First, the authors present human resources as a critical part of a SYSTEM, integrated with the company's external environment, workforce, culture, strategy and production methods, rather than as an isolated or downstream activity.
Second, they bring insights from economics, sociology and social psychology to the topic, in a powerful way. The four appendices alone (transaction cost economics, game theory, agency theory and market signaling) are worth the price of the book.
Third, they avoid the trap of "best practice", where an author looks at a few successful firms (GE? PepsiCo? 3M?) and encourages others to imitate them. In contrast, this book offers clues to creating real and inimitable competitive advantage from a company's human resource management.
The entire treatment is readable and rich in cases.
No-bull human resources.......1999-03-23
I had the fortune to have access to early versions of some chapters of this book, and it changed my opinion about human resources. They present the issues surrounding human resources management using frameworks that come from economics and organizational science, not from opinions and feelings...

Doesn't Relate Well to the Exam Priorities.......2007-09-03
If you are planning on taking the exam related to this book, you'll need some supplemental materials. It's a little light in some areas that the exam covers closely. There are too many to mention specifically. I'm still in the process of looking for supplemental material to help me pass this exam and learn the material.
Well Structured, but samples has too many errors.......2007-07-29
A good book for help to know what is necessary to achieve a good result in microsoft test. But, samples has a lot of sintaxial errors and explanation about each topic is very superficial.
Overall Good Preparation for Exam.......2007-06-15
This kit is designed for a developer that plans to take the MCTS exam 70-529. The book assumes that you are comfortable working with the Visual Studio IDE, are familiar with object oriented programming, and have worked with SQL Server. The book is well laid out for someone studying for the MCTS exam. At the time of the writing of this review, this is the only book designed for the purpose of preparing you for the the 70-529 exam.
The book is broken up into the following areas. Each area coincides with a main learning objective.
* Creating and accessing XML web services
* Configuring and customizing an XML web service application
* Creating, configuring, and deploying remoting applications
* Implementing asynchronous calls and remoting events
* Implementing WSE3
* Creating and accessing serviced components and message queuing
As well as the book, the kit consists of a practice test engine with a pool of 300 realistic test questions. The CD that the test software is on also includes an e-book version of this book in case you need to travel light.
There are 13 chapters with 739 pages of information laid out in a very usable manner. This layout follows the best teaching practice of "tell them what you are going to tell them. Tell it to them. And then tell them what you just told them." This repetitive approach is very good for reinforcing the important concepts.
Each chapter starts with the exam objectives and is broken up into lessons which should typically take from 20 to 45 minutes to accomplish. Each lesson develops a topic and usually includes a thorough walkthrough of how you would accomplish a task. At the end of each lesson is a summary, which is an overview of the main points of the lesson. This is followed by a lesson review which includes questions for you to think about and answer.
At the end of each chapter is the chapter review, the chapter summary, key terms, case scenarios, and suggested practices. As you can see, the chapters tend to thoroughly cover the material.
I had never created and used a web service before, yet I was able to follow the instructions in the first lesson and have one created and configured in less than a half hour. I even learned a few good lessons such as what can happen if you don't change the default namespace before deploying the service.
As with any technology book covering a topic this broad with rapidly evolving technologies there were a few inaccuracies. I think most of these issues were changes between versions of WSE and .NET. All in all, this was a well written book that covers a lot of material in an easy to understand manner. If you are planning to take the 70-529 MCTS exam, then you need to get this Training Kit.
Useful Reference for the Workplace.......2007-05-07
This is the only book available (at the time of this writing) for the MCTS 70-529 exam. So far I have taken exam 70-536 using the MS Press books and am preparing to take the exam for this one.
I have found the MS Press books to be effective reference books in the work place. I have opened them up many times. The material in this one, like in the 70-536 book cover much of the day-to-day tasks that a .NET developer would need to do at work.
The electronic version of the book on the CD-ROM is great! I also thinks that the MeasureUp practice questions were very helpful.
The reason for the 4 star rating is that the book is not exactly going to cover the types of things you will be asked on the exam.
My suggestion, if you are planning to take the exam, would be to study much of the tasks that it only covers in brief. Do ALL of the examples! Using this book in conjunction with the MSDN website, and the MeasureUp practice exams will be solid preparation for the exam.
Pretty decent book that covers distributed technologies in .NET environment.......2007-03-25
Having worked in distributed technologies in mostly Unix based environment for about 15 years and about 2 years in .NET, I thought it is a good idea to see how the technologies compare in both the cross-platform environments. So that was my original motivation to buy this book so I could gain/reinforce my knowledge in .NET based distributed technologies and compare it to Unix cousins.
As I kept reading the book, I was bit intrigued and figured may be I should appear for exam for the kicks.
I must say they did a very good job of it though there are multiple errors in the book and also in the question bank (for e.g., most of WSE related questions were based on WSE 2.0 as opposed to WSE 3.0). And some of questions were even duplicate. Though at times it was irritating, it did not stop me from making progress, however. Basically, it forced me to refer to MSDN articles and .NET 2.0 documentation.
If one wants to be knowledgeable in these technologies, one needs to supplement the information in this book with the following material:
1. Programming .NET Components, 2nd Edition by Juval Lowy -- an excellent book for asynchronous calls, delegates, remoting and security
2. Expert Service-Oriented Architecture in C# 2005 -- excellent book for Web services and WSE 3.0
3. Pro MSMQ (Microsoft message Queue Programming) by Arohi Redkar et al. -- Excellent book for MSMQ 3.0
Of course, nothing to beat hands-on experience as mastering these technologies is not a trivial effort at all.
Anways, the exam had 40 questions and about 160 minutes to finish it. Passing score was 700 (I have no clue how they calculate this score). I got a score of 858 though I must admit it was lot of hard work and patience.
Yes, I recommend this book as it is the only game in town. I could have rated it 5 stars if they QA'ed the contents a bit more and that is a shame.
Good luck with it.

The P&G Approach to Value Generalized.......2000-06-06
Delivering Profitable Value is an excellent look at ways to identify opportunities for making your products and services more valuable to customers. Unlike most books related to value which have little structure or focus to them, this one understands the importance of the ecosystem you use and in which your customer exists for delivering and using your offerings. One thing I liked was the series of steps the author proposes for comparing offerings available to customers.
The book uses lots of interesting examples, many of which are new to me. But each was easy to understand. It starts with a comparison of using an ATM and go to a human teller to point out the pros and cons of each.
I was particulary impressed by the discussion of the value proposition at Southwest Airlines. Only Nuts! and this book have a good description. Books by well-known academics are amazingly dense on that subject, as Mr. Lanning points out.
You also get some good information on advanced techniques for going beyond the limits of normal market research. This includes actually taking the time to become the customer or end user for your product or service, at the customer or end user's location. It also includes observing behavior with videos and following up with directed questions. Most companies use neither technique.
Mr. Lanning started out his career at P & G and has developed from that company's fine approach to marketing and innovation a more generalized way of thinking that can be used by almost any organization. That is well done.
His framework is robust in that it allows you to compare economic benefits (like a lower price, or being able to replace some labor in your manufacturing process) and noneconomic ones (like less stress) with competitive offerings.
This is a very well done book.
My only complaint is that he is so focused on the value proposition and improving it, that he pays little attention to the challenges of developing lower costs and better prices. Those areas need very thorough explanation, that is not really here. If the book had been entitled Diagnosing the Opportunity to Deliver Profitable Value, I would not have had this quibble. So really, it's just that the book's title is a bit broader than its coverage.
Enjoy!
DELIVERS A WEALTH OF PROFITABLE VALUE!.......1999-11-28
The author, originator of the "value proposition" concept, presents a new approach to strategy and performance. This system links the organization's capabilities and goal with the real needs of its customers. It replaces the conventional view of developing, producing and marketing product with choosing a complete value proposition, providing each experience in the chosen proposition, and communicating these experiences.
This focus on the experience of the customer is the psychological cornerstone to the author's DPV (delivering profitable value) system. An extensive discussion of this system provides a wealth of profitable value this book delivers. Highly recommended. Reviewed by Gerry Stern, founder, Stern & Associates, author of Stern's Sourcefinder The Master Directory to HR and Business Management Information & Resources, Stern's CyberSpace SourceFinder, and the Compensation and Benefits SourceFinder.
This is a superb guide to defining a company strategy.......1999-01-21
The DPV process, and the text itself, are excellent tools. They guide a company away from excessive internal or customer compelled thinking. The book's contentents instead direct the company to understand the experience the customer has with the company's products and all other interactions with the company. Our company is using this now.

Book Description
Based entirely on research from peer-reviewed journals and randomized controlled trials,
Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff is a complete program to prevent and rehabilitate rotator cuff injuries for athletes and non-athletes alike. In less than 100 pages, readers will learn precisely how the rotator cuff works, what can go wrong with it, and then are guided step-by-step through an evidence-based program that takes just minutes a week to complete. Drawing from the latest rotator cuff research,
Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff is especially useful for those who have been diagnosed with either a partial or full-thickness rotator cuff tear, experience shoulder pain, do upper body weight lifting, play a sport or have a job that involves repeated arm motions above shoulder level, have been diagnosed with "impingement syndrome," or for anyone simply wanting a healthy and properly functioning rotator cuff.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent resource on treating and preventing injuries..........2007-09-06
This is a great book that concisely explains the anatomy and physiology of the rotator cuff including the bones, muscles, biomechanics, etc. in just enough detail for the average person to understand. It also describes how to distinguish between different types of injuries, how to approach rehabilitating them and collects a lot of rotator cuff injuries in one small volume. While the book is rather expensive for its size, it packs a lot of well-explained information into a small space.
I'm an ex-physiology teaching fellow and scientist. I thought this book was great and turned something that is often difficult to explain into something anyone who can read can understand. The diagrams are good and the book contains no unnecessary detail.
I also agree with other reviewers that while Jim Johnson isn't an expert on rotator cuffs, his book is thoroughly researched and he does have a PT credential and has undoubtedly had 15 years of clinical experience in a teaching hospital environment. This suggests he has a very good nuts and bolts understanding and hands-on experience.
Johnson is "magic"!.......2007-07-09
This is the second book of Jim Johnson's that I have bought. The first one fixed my back pains with a simple exercise to strengthen the Multifidus muscles.
The exercises in this book has significantly reduced pain and increased mobility in my left shoulder, allowing me to sleep through the night and lift my arm over my shoulder.
Review of, "Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff".......2007-06-13
I ordered this book for my brother-in-law who has experienced shoulder pain and not being able to lift his arm higher than shoulder level due to a rotator cuff injury he received in the past. I recommended it to him because of the wonderful results I got using the information in this book to treat my own right shoulder pain.
Having previously read, Jim Johnson's, The Sixty-Second Motivator, and finding it very helpful, I can tell you that I certainly had the motivation to try and stick with an exercise that would relieve my painful and restricting condition. And it sounded to me like my brother-in-law was in the same boat.
I used the Sidelying External Rotation exercise on page 55 of the rotator cuff book and got great results. The first time I tried it I could only manage to raise a 20 ounce can of pineapple about half way up less than ten times. I found the detailed instruction, precautions and notes particularly helpful and feel that carefully following them was why I experienced the gradual recovery. My wife sat beside me making sure I did the exercise slowly and exactly as the book states. After about four weeks I actually worked up to fully raising the can of pineapple 20 times. Later on I increased the weight little by little and began to feel good enough to resume some of the more physically demanding activities on our small farm.
Last week I was actually able to assist with harvesting our hay and didn't suffer during or afterward from any of the shoulder pain or stiffness that I had previously experienced many times. Yes, I was careful about what I did and how I worked, but for me to even attempt to try stacking a 60 pound bale of hay was completely out of the question a few months ago. I went from shoulder pain that caused me sleepless nites and not being able to lift my right arm any higher than shoulder level, to what I consider a darned good day's work.
This book is a real bargain and indeed I consider it invaluable when I think about how it helped me. And as you can see, I heartily recommend it.
So far, so good.......2007-05-11
Just as the book promised, I had a eureka! moment the other day. I bought this book because I have been having unidentified rotator cuff problems for years (I was a baseball and now am an avid softball player). Because everyone talks about rotator cuff tears, I assumed that's what my problem was. After reading Johnson's book, I was surprised and pleased to discover that my problem was most likely simply an impingement, and that no matter what your unspecified problem it is, it is likely to improve from his exercises (he cites the studies that prove this claim). Prior to starting his exercises, it was painful to soap up in the shower, sleep or do anything where I had to reach my back. Now, after just a month of the stretches and strengthening exercises I realized all of a sudden the other day (eureka!) that I have no pain in my shoulders! My range of motion is not where it should be yet in one shoulder, but it's improving. I still have a ways to go, but I'm encouraged by my progress so far.
Johnson's book is written to help people with all severity of rotator cuff problems. Anywhere from being unable to lift an arm overhead to near full utility of the joint. He also gives you measurements by which you can judge your flexibility, which is also nice to help you figure out what "normal" is.
I suppose the question still remains: why don't you just go to a doctor, idiot? I suppose the real answer is the inconvenience of going, the cost, and primarily, just that I'm a DIYer type my nature, and like to fix things on my own when I can.
The only reason I didn't go to 5 stars was because I got the impression from the book that Johnson is really just a guy (in the field) who reviewed some studies and came up with a program. Now, that's a great way to go about things, but I would not call him an *expert* on rotator cuffs. On the plus side, that does make him very easy to understand, as opposed to some of the surgeons out there who have written on the subject.
