Customer Reviews:
Excellent book.......2001-12-30
I have found this book an excellent starting point to understanding product development cycles, the values of planning, and effective project management. It is the best book that I have read on the topic to date.
Classic on new product development.......2000-10-16
Don't be turned away by the pub date--this is still the best book out there on the topic of new product development. The development framework that informs the structure of the book and their prescriptions is insightful and elegant. I have used the book for many years as a main text book for my 'management of technology' classes, to both engineering and business students, and most students love the book, especially those with real life experience. It's a great book to introduce engineering students to business/project management issues for the first time, and visa versa. The cases are also very well selected.
It is the perfect complement.......2000-09-25
of the book "Revolutionizing Product Development", same authors. The chapters are segmented according to the logic of the previous mentioned book. It is worth mention the chapters about the application of the "Aggregate Project Plan" and "Structuring the Development Funnel". These chapters tell us about the pitfalls and gave some useful proposition on how to solve it. The examples are OK. It could be a bit difficult to undestand how the process works without the previous reference cited before. There is also some "study questions" that suggests that this book is also for training people on Innovation. Very good idea indeed!

Book Description
In the early 1990s, competitive elections in the Russian Federation signaled the end to the authoritarian political system dominated by a single political party. More than ten years and many elections later, a single party led by Russian President Vladimir Putin threatens to end Russia's democratic experiment. Russia's experience with new elections is not unique but it does challenge existing theories of democratic consolidation by showing that competitive elections cannot guarantee successful democratic consolidation. This book explores the conditions under which electoral competition contributes to democratic development by examining impact of elections on democratic consolidation.

Book Description
Demonstrating how voter turnout can serve as an indicator of the health of a democracy, this study documents the conditions that can result in low voter turnout and suggests reforms that might alleviate these conditions. Mark Franklin concludes that declining turnout does not necessarily reflect reductions in civic virtue or increases in alienation. Franklin claims that turnout falls due to cumulating effects of institutional changes, a lack of competition in elections and a decision by a large proportion of the electorate not to participate as a response to the lack of competition.

Book Description
Like no other book before it, Global Information Warfare illustrates the relationships and interdependencies of business and national objectives, of companies and countries, and of their dependence on advances in technology. This book sheds light on the "Achilles heel" that these dependencies on advanced computing and information technologies create. It underscores how hostile countries, business competitors, terrorists, hacktivists and others are waging Information Warfare (IW) against their adversaries. This may sound like science fiction, but it has been happening for years and continues to this day-anyone and everyone can be a target and a casualty.
Customer Reviews:
Global Information Warfare - On going and getting worse.......2002-07-11
We wrote this book, because global information warfare attacks are increasing and awareness of the threats is the first step towards defending against such attacks. Here's what others have said about our book:
"...successful organizations are the ones that actively manage their information environment...having the capabilities to conduct offensive and defensive information warfare (IW) is absolutely essential. Many countries, cartels, and terrorist organizations possess sophisticated information warfare know-how and will do what they can to disrupt a nation's freedom, safety, economy and social fabric. The concepts and recommendations in Global Information Warfare are a good place to start and ones which I heartily endorse. Kent Kresa, Chairman and CEO, Northrop Grumman Corporation. Los Angeles, California, USA
The authors have written another "must have" for ALL Security professionals charged with the protection of corporate assets. This book clearly depicts everything you need to know about defending your systems and information, while giving you the information you need to understand the global nature of information warfare. Suzanne Gorman, SIAC, Director, Corporate Information Security Awareness and Investigations, New York City, New York, USA
Awareness is the first and key step in finding proper solution for any problem. Awareness of the nature of the problem, its various appearances, consequences as well as of tools and means to fight it and their strengths and weaknesses. This book gives you exactly that, in a quick, complete yet comprehensive way: awareness! Predrag Pale, University of Zagreb, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology of Croatia 1993-2000, "Father" of Croatian Internet, Croatia
Going business on the global information superhighway can be a dangerous business. Consequently, if you are an information security officer with a responsibility for the protection of key business information assets then this book is a book that you will want to have and use. This book provides all the information you need to understand the global nature of information warfare. It also provides you with all the information that you need to begin to defend your information systems against attack. In short, if you want to protect your systems and do business on the Internet then you need this book. Dr. Andrew Blyth, School of Computing, University of Glamorgan, UK
Information Warfare has many perspectives and this book serves as an excellent overview as well as stimulation for further thinking. Manuel W. Wik, Chief Engineer, Strategic Specialist,
Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), Stockholm, Sweden
In recent years, the conception of Information Warfare has become very popular in advanced countries. This concept involves employing information and information technology to affect all aspects of politic, economy, military, and psychology of other countries, and to defend our country, especially during the war period. This book provides readers with basic and new knowledge regarding Information Warfare, and enlightens readers to realize that Information Warfare has become more and more important to every country, society, military, and individual. As a Col. instructor of Air Command and Staff School, National Defense University, R.O.C., I strongly recommend this book to all students studying in military schools and for every soldier. This book will not only expand our knowledge, make us realize the importance of Information Warfare, above all, it will make us be better prepared for the next war. Ching-Chang Wu, Air Force Colonel, Chief Instructor, Air Command and Staff School, National Defense University, Republic of China.
Global Information Warfare is an in-depth assessment of current drivers and initatives that govern the protection perimeters and profiles that will be needed for the immediate future. It combines a common sense approach to understanding the global critical infrastructure, our individual nation-state and corporate vulnerabilites, and what must be done at what level; by whom. It is an exciting and explicit investment in the future, a must read manuscript for the security practitioner. Don Evans, Senior Security Engineer, United Space Alliance, Houston, Texas, USA
This book is a practical survival guide for anyone working in the world of protecting information against any adversary that's motivated to attain a competitive edge. Jerry Swick, WorldCom Network Security Operations Center, Investigative Services, Los Angeles, California, USA
The authors have written a book that is essential reading for managers, executives and both physical and information security professionals. In the era of e-business and global commerce linked via the Internet understanding the means and methods of information warfare will be crucial for both private sector as well as governmental leaders. The authors have done the public a great service by describing clearly how, when, why and where we can expect to see information warfare emerge into increasing importance. Spurred on by the global war on terrorism it's inevitable that global information warfare will be waged, and therefore it's critical that we all be well informed on this once arcane topic. Read this book and learn! William Boni, Chief Information Security Officer, Motorola Corporation USA
Information Warfare is complicated and very serious business. This book will organize and simplify your understanding of it. Information Warfare is a sad reality of the 21st century. Failure to understand it and deal with it can be disastrous. This book will help you do both. Ed Halibozek, Corporate Director of Security, and IS Sector & Western Region Manager of Security, Los Angeles, California, USA
A timely and relevant book by authors who know the subject, inside and out. Well worth the time to read. Michael Stankosky, D.Sc., Professor of Knowledge Management, The George Washington University, USA

Electoral Authoritarianism: The Dynamics of Unfree Competition
ASIN: 0521690048 |
Book Description
Most models of party competition assume that citizens vote for a platform rather than narrowly targeted material benefits. However, there are many countries where politicians win elections by giving money, jobs, and services in direct exchange for votes. This is not just true in the developing world, but also in economically developed countries - such as Japan and Austria - that clearly meet the definition of stable, modern democracies. This book offers explanations for why politicians engage in clientelistic behaviours and why voters respond. Using newly collected data on national and sub-national patterns of patronage and electoral competition, the contributors demonstrate why explanations based on economic modernization or electoral institutions cannot account for international variation in patron-client and programmatic competition. Instead, they show how the interaction of economic development, party competition, governance of the economy, and ethnic heterogeneity may work together to determine the choices of patrons, clients and policies.

Book Description
Despite its democratic structure, Japan's government has been dominated by a single party, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) since 1955. This book offers an explanation for why, even in the face of great dissatisfaction with the LDP, no opposition party has been able to offer itself as a credible challenger in Japan. Understanding such failure is important for many reasons, from its effect on Japanese economic policy to its implications for what facilitates democratic responsiveness more broadly. The principal explanations for opposition failure in Japan focus on the country's culture and electoral system.
Customer Reviews:
Best Book on Japanese Politics in Years.......2007-04-05
This is the best book on Japanese politics in years. For years, we Japan experts have known that the opposition parties in Japan had a problem, but the diagnosis was always based more on unique factors of each party or the strength of the ruling LDP. Now Scheiner comes along and provides a systematic and creative answer to why opposition parties never seem to be able to take power in Japan. His answer--a vicious circle based on the LDP's access to pork barrel that winds up depriving the oppositon parties of reasons for local politicians to join them, giving a huge advantage to the LDP to stay in power--is brilliant and probably right. He makes his case with detailed evidence from Japan, using just enough simple statistics to be persuasive, and confining more sophisticated methodologies to an appendix for the expert. Scheiner is one of those rare political scientists who is comparative, methodologically sophisticated but also a real country expert. If you want to understand one major dimension of Japanese politics, read this book.
Excellent Analysis of Why the LDP Won and the Opposition Lost in Japan.......2005-09-03
This is an excellent book. It fundamentally challenges scholars understanding of one of the most interesting party phenomena in industrialized democracies: the long-term dominance of the Liberal Democratic Party in Japan. I heartily recommend it to anyone interested in party politics or Japanese democracy. Scheiner is also a gifted writer, so the book is often a pleasure to read.

Book Description
Regulatory Competition and Economic Integration addresses one of the hottest policy questions on both sides of the Atlantic: at what level of government should regulation be undertaken? Whether called 'federalism' or 'subsidiarity', the struggle between those who wish to centralize governmental functions and those who seek to decentralize them looms large. Esty and Geradin bring together top-notch scholars from both Europe and the United States to examine the various aspects of the debate between 'harmonization' and 'regulatory competition' across three comparative dimensions: first, across regulatory areas (environment, banking, corporate law, labor, tax and antitrust); second, across models of economic integration (from highly integrated systems, such as the United States or the European Union, to loosely integrated regimes, such as the WTO); and third, across disciplinary perspectives (law, economics, business, political science). The book provides a sharp focus on the circumstances that would yield gains from regulatory competition and to contrast those cases where heightened co-operation in standard setting or broader regulatory harmonization might increase social welfare.

Book Description
Revealing why Hindu-Muslim riots in India break out when and where they do, Steven Wilkinson demonstrates why some state governments in India prevent Hindu-Muslim riots while others do not or even help to incite violence. Wilkinson asserts that riots are manipulated to help win elections, and that state governments decide whether to stop them--depending on electoral calculations concerning the loss or gain of votes. He tests this claim using a dataset on riots and their causes as well as case studies of several Indian states.
