From an Industrial Practitioner of Process Measurement & Control.......2006-07-10
An excellent option if you are looking for business and industry examples and applications of Fuzzy Logic.
If you are looking for more in-depth knowledge and theory about Fuzzy Logic you should consider "The Fuzzy Systems Handbook: A Practitioner's Guide to Building, Using, & Maintaining Fuzzy Systems" by the same author.
Hands on fuzzy logic book.......2001-07-19
This book compliments The Fuzzy Systems Handbook very well. (BTW, The Fuzzy Systems Handbook, also by Earl Cox, is one of the most usable Fuzzy Logic books that I have on my bookshelf) The practical examples in Fuzzy Logic for Business and Industry, provide users with tools to implement Fuzzy Logic in real world applications. If you want a book explaining Fuzzy Logic principles, this is not the book for you. If you want to get insight into the application of Fuzzy Logic in business scenarios, this is a very worthwhile starting point.
Not as good as the Fuzzy Logic Handbook.......2001-06-26
In this book the concepts of Fuzzy Logic are outlined reasonably well, but emphasis is put on the so called 'applicability' of fuzzy reasoning in business applications. By working through several business examples in depth, a fair coverage of the topic is provided. The step by step description of the fuzzy process is a bonus towards understanding how the model arrives at it's end results.
However, compared with the Fuzzy Logic Handbook, this book relies too heavily on the examples. It lacks the clear description of some of the underlying mathematics and their relevance provided in the Handbook aswell as a solid foundation of the principles of fuzzy logic.
On the other hand, this book provides long and detailed examples that can be usefull in combination with the sometimes short descriptions provided in the Handbook.
If you are looking for a good introduction into Fuzzy Logic, this is not the right book, if however you are somewhat familiar with the principles and want to see for yourself how fuzzy logic works, this book provides some nicely worked out examples.
Book Description
Fuzzy Modeling and Genetic Algorithms for Data Mining and Exploration is a handbook for analysts, engineers, and managers involved in developing data mining models in business and government. As youll discover, fuzzy systems are extraordinarily valuable tools for representing and manipulating all kinds of data, and genetic algorithms and evolutionary programming techniques drawn from biology provide the most effective means for designing and tuning these systems.
You dont need a background in fuzzy modeling or genetic algorithms to benefit, for this book provides it, along with detailed instruction in methods that you can immediately put to work in your own projects. The author provides many diverse examples and also an extended example in which evolutionary strategies are used to create a complex scheduling system.
* Written to provide analysts, engineers, and managers with the background and specific instruction needed to develop and implement more effective data mining systems.
* Helps you to understand the trade-offs implicit in various models and model architectures.
* Provides extensive coverage of fuzzy SQL querying, fuzzy clustering, and fuzzy rule induction.
* Lays out a roadmap for exploring data, selecting model system measures, organizing adaptive feedback loops, selecting a model configuration, implementing a working model, and validating the final model.
* In an extended example, applies evolutionary programming techniques to solve a complicated scheduling problem.
* Presents examples in C, C++, Java, and easy-to-understand pseudo-code.
* Extensive online component, including sample code and a complete data mining workbench.
Customer Reviews:
nice match of fuzzy logic and genetic algorithms.......2005-10-16
Cox explains fuzzy modelling at a level that should be readily understandable to many readers. The math ideas are given, but you are not overwhelmed with page after page of formulae. Enough maths is developed to use against data and to produce sensible results.
A good feature of the book is how to apply fuzzy logic against data in a SQL database. Other books on fuzzy logic often ignore this important practical case.
Cluster is decently covered. This is a field where often what is a cluster can be very subjective. Which makes it well suited for a fuzzy approach.
The book also shows a very natural fit between fuzzy logic and genetic algorithms. The probing nature of the latter, where you really don't know what the "proper" answer should be, means that using a fuzzy match as a step within the genetic searching can be a fruitful implementation.
One of the Worst Books Ever -- Deserves Negative Stars.......2005-09-22
Both the author and publisher should be ashamed of releasing this book, and having the gall to charge $50 for it. Let me list some of the ways this book is a rip-off:
1) It was never proof-read or copy edited. There are typographic errors, misspellings, and missing words in the middle of sentences.
2) One chapter (I'll let you find it) skips a number in the figure sequence.
3) Variable names in the text differ from those in the referenced figure.
4) Code fragments in several languages are useless other than to boost the author's ego: look how many computer languages I can use!
5) The examples are all over the map; there's no consistency. Worst of all, however, is that the entire third part of the book (the Genetic Algorithms included in the title) focuses on a crew scheduling algorithm and never shows how that relates to data mining or anything else that preceeded it in the first two parts.
The book looks (and reads) like it was thrown together overnight from previously written materials and no one took the time to make sure it was done correctly. It must have been a stream-of-consciousness core dump without any thoughtful review to see if all parts were necessary, complete, and fit together to make a whole story.
They should pay the reader to take it out of inventory. It is unfortunate that the book is so poor as to be useless, I'm sure that others are as disappointed as I am.
4 stars for theory, but 3 stars for actual implementation details.......2005-09-12
4 stars for theory, but 3 stars for actual implementation details
This book is a great introduction into Fuzzy Logic, Rules, Sets, and Modeling. The author doesn't assume the reader already has a Masters degree in Comp Sci or Software Eng, and gives good explanations of all the requisite knowledge needed to understand the basics of Fuzzy stuff. For this I gave the author 4 stars.
But, there is very little implementation details in this book. Its mostly theory with a smattering of code here and there. That's where it falls short of invaluable. If the author has made the book a hundred or two more pages longer and went into in depth implementation details this book would have been an easy 5 stars, coving the basics all the way through real world usage and implementation.
As it is, its just a good masters level text book. A good supplemental theory text to read prior to another book that shows more implementation details (which I haven't found yet).

Book Description
Fuzzy Logic in Management demonstrates that difficult problems and changes in the management environment can be more easily handled by bringing fuzzy logic into the practice of management. This explicit theme is developed through the book as follows: Chapter 1, "Management and Intelligent Support Technologies", is a short survey of management leadership and what can be gained from support technologies. Chapter 2, "Fuzzy Sets and Fuzzy Logic", provides a short introduction to fuzzy sets, fuzzy relations, the extension principle, fuzzy implications and linguistic variables. Chapter 3, "Group Decision Support Systems", deals with group decision making, and discusses methods for supporting the consensus reaching processes. Chapter 4, "Fuzzy Real Options for Strategic Planning", summarizes research where the fuzzy real options theory was implemented as a series of models. These models were thoroughly tested on a number of real life investments, and validated in 2001. Chapter 5, "Soft Computing Methods for Reducing the Bullwhip Effect", summarizes research work focused on the demand fluctuations in supply chains. The program enhanced existing theoretical frameworks with fuzzy logic modeling. Chapter 6, "Knowledge Management", outlines the collection, storing, transfer and management of knowledge using fuzzy logic. The principles are worked out in detail with software agents. Chapter 7, "Mobile Technology Application", introduces various applications including empirical facts and how mobile technology can be supported with software agents.
Implicitly the book develops themes that successful companies should use to (1) master effectiveness and quality in both the details and the whole, (2) build on and work with flexibility, and (3) support continuous learning in both the organizational and the individual level.

OK Book Marred by Crippleware.......2002-04-19
I recently used the book in an introductory AI class. I found it short on good descriptions of the basics, and long on 'user manual' information on FuzzyTech. This was not bad in itself, but FuzzyTech is a VERY complex program and the 'trial version' on the CD will not let you save ANY files or projects. This means you have to do all your learning in one session, or start over the next day. It would have been far more useful if the company had limited the size of the project you could save. I won't use this book again.
Good book to explore Fuzzy Logic solutions.......2001-09-18
I found this book to be a worthwhile read. I agree with the other reviewers that it covers Fuzzytech quite extensively, but a completely working version of fuzzytech ships with the book, so it is possible to follow all the examples in the book. The book triggered some good ideas for me as to how to implement fuzzy logic in the business environment. It does not try to be a very academical book, although various discussions are given to explain Fuzzy Logic. If you are prepared to use Fuzzytech as tool to play around with examples, then this is a good book.
If you plan on learning the Fuzzytech program, you need this.......2001-03-04
As a user of the fuzzy logic program that von Altrock's company makes, I have found that this book is absolutely necessary. The truly weird thing is that Inform, the software publisher, doesn't tell you about this book, when it should be included with every Fuzzy program that they sell. The manual that is included with the program is wretchedly bad; dull, confusing, and pointless. Only worse. Once you discover this book, much of the operational confusion surrounding Fuzzytech will be cleared up. However, von Altrock cannot resist a certain measure of obscurity. NeuroFuzzy applications is direct and clear, but leaves plenty of understanding gaps between one implementation and another. Von Altrock needs to expand this text and provide a wider range of specifics and details. For instance, until very recently, Fuzzytech suffered from a limited ability to read data files. This placed the program far behind the curve of contemporary usage. This is badly needed information; how does the progam really work ? Since this is the ONLY readable volume on the subject, von Altrock and Inform would be well advised to do a more thorough job of linking theory to practice.
Finally something for practitioners.......2000-12-09
I was looking for a good technology to implement risk assessment systems and a colleague pointed me to fuzzy logic. Browsing the various books, I was flooded with mathematical theory and application notes that just claimed, fuzzy is good because it is fuzzy, and gave no hints of what was really done. Altrock's book is different. It goes right to the point and shows you all the works with examples. While the first examples are rather simplistic and only serve a didactic use, the more complicated case studies are quite useful. What is really helpful is the attached software. However, the attached CD is a bit outdated. but I was able to download an updated version of the software examples.
Fuzzy logic and neurofuzzy applications in business and fina.......2000-05-01
This book has a promising blurb which lead to me buy it. I was greatly disappointed. The blurbs suggested that the book would have plenty of detailed examples for the use of fuzzy logic in business and finance. The examples were there, but few and far in between, without the detail that would have made them useful case studies. Instead the author spends almost the entire book on one *single* fuzzy logic software called fuzzytech. The book is more like a manual for fuzzytech applications than it is an exposition on the use of fuzzy logic for business and finance.

Book Description
The contributions in this book connect Probability Theory/Statistics and Fuzzy Set Theory in different ways. Some of these connections are either philosophical or theoretical in nature, but most of them state models and methods to work with fuzzy data (or fuzzy perception) when dealing with random experiments. In this way, several probabilistic studies are developed, as well as techniques and criteria to get descriptive and inferential statistical conclusions from fuzzy data. On the other hand, some studies have been devoted to fuzzy measures and their relationship with measures in Probability Theory.

Book Description
An introductory review of uncertainty formalisms by the volume editors begins the volume. The first main part of the book introduces some of the general problems dealt with in research. The second part is devoted to case studies; each presentation in this category has a well-delineated application problem and an analyzed solution based on an uncertainty formalism. The final part reports on developments of uncertainty formalisms and supporting technology, such as automated reasoning systems, that are vital to making these formalisms applicable. The book ends with a useful subject index. There is considerable synergy between the papers presented. The representative collection of case studies and associated techniques make the volume a particularly coherent and valuable resource. It will be indispensable reading for researchers and professionals interested in the application of uncertainty formalisms as well as for newcomers to the topic.
