5 out of 5 stars For all who want to approach this in a practical manner.......2007-08-08

I found this book to be one of the best step by step guide for application to focus organization.
It takes technical approach and merges it with organizational thoughts to guide actionable results.
For anyone doing Balanced Scorecard, this is one of the best step by step guide that addresses strategy from the holistic and bottoms up approach.
A must read for senior management.

3 out of 5 stars Not so good for novice.......2006-03-21

Probably the book is good for the experienced, but not so good for beginners like me. Although it addresses the questions like "what BSC is", I failed to get a clear picture of the art, and I'm waiting for some other books on the topic from Amazon.

Anyway, "essentials" are not introduction. To the title of this book, it's especially true.

5 out of 5 stars Cuts to the chase - practical approach.......2004-06-23

I've read a number of BSC books, from Kaplan & Norton's original classic, to later works, and this is one of the very few that goes into practical implementation and management of a balanced scorecard.

What makes this book better than the others I've read is the way the author points out the pitfalls as well as the advantages of implementing and using this tool. He is objective and, more importantly, experienced, which is evidenced by how he places the BSC in context. This context is shown in the gap he uncovers between strategic themes, mission/vision/values, competencies, and purpose, and initiatives, objectives, measures and targets. The BSC fills that gap - if properly done and all of the key factors are understood.

I liked the way this book uncovers subtle key factors, such as the differences between strategy and operational effectiveness (often mistakenly viewed as the same thing), and what you should and should not be measuring. I also liked the way strategic themes were defined as a concept, as well as the use of tool called a paradox map to verify the alignment of tasks to strategy.

The bulk (and value) of this book is the implementation plan, which is governed by six critical success factors necessary to implement a BSC. It is here that the book shines because the implementation is laid out as a project (in fact, one of the six CSFs is to treat the implementation as a project), and is achievable with no non-value added steps.

If you want to gain an objective view of balanced scorecards and their value, and a pragmatic approach to implementing one, this book is the one I recommend.

Book Description

The focus of this book is to educate the reader on the strategic principles fundamental to using information technology to gain market control. It provides case examples of how to use IT to enhance existing core competencies and strategies. The book is designed to help managers struggling with how to advantageously harness the new information revolution. It can also support executive and business education programs on managing technology when few such studies exist. While Internet and information technologies are currently hot topics many firms and executives are without the tools and know-how of how to actually use them to improve results. Some major firms have sophisticated strategies for using information technology to impact, control and even own their competitive environments. This book describes how major non-information technology companies are doing this and the strategic principles employed.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good Theory, Bad Writing.......2002-10-03

The author is clearly expert on the topic, and has done a lot of useful research. I like and agree with his theory on levels of IT strategy adoption. However, the book is poorly organized, the author does not proceed in an orderly fashion, and you get the sense that each chapter is largely redundant to other material in the book. One can imagine a tidy and concise version of this same material, covered in about half the pages. This is worthwhile due to the cogent observations, but you must slog through some obtuse writing to glean the salient points.

4 out of 5 stars Accessible and cogent.......2002-09-24

Bill Rapp has an established track record of writing clearly and cogently for his readers. He is one of the most perceptive international economists in the business and writes in an accessible style that's highly appropriate for both professional executives and the general reader alike.

"Information Technology Strategies" is based on his extensive background research on successful strategies used by leading multinational corporations, a market he knows extremely well. This book would be optimal reading for American executives who may be struggling with strategic questions regarding the appropriate positioning of their companies in a highly volatile and extremely competitive global market, but it's also recommended for the general reader who wants to be well informed and up to date. Bound to please.

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING !!!.......2002-08-28

It's an excellent book. The author developed an outstanding strategic framework for using IT. This framework is well supported by case studies from Japan, USA and Europe. (Citi, Merck, Nippon Steel, Toyota, Ito-Yokado, Meiji Seimei and Nokia).

It's a MUST read for the managers and executives involved in understanding, designing and implementing IT projects.

Book Description

Not only do the goals of marketing departments often fail to match those of finance, they sometimes outright conflict. The two departments speak different languages, they have no clear link, and - bottom line - the markets for customers and investors are separate. But one innovative book can change everything. CREATING MARKET VALUE illustrates a cause-and-effect model of relationships between marketing and finance based on a common language, economic theory, and financial accounting data. This model links intangible assets to the market value of firms. Breaking with the tradition of valuing companies based on unrelated ratios and metrics, Dr. Victor Cook identifies three metrics that bind marketing and finance: the Value Sales Principle, the Rule of Maximum Earnings, and the Competitive Valuation Paradigm. These groundbreaking principles point to a model that unites important metrics from marketing and sales and adds to the understanding of exactly what drives the value of an organization.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A new perspective for assessing firm performance.......2006-08-22

Competing for Customers and Capital is a must read for those in the finance and marketing areas, and especially for those who are, or aspire to be, upper-level managers. Whether you agree with his approach or not, the concepts Cook presents will encourage you to think about the marketing-finance interface in a new and collaborative way. As the first set of chapters is devoted to developing the theoretical constructs used in the book, I would suggest that you begin with chapter 5, read thought to the end and then come back and read chapter 1. Chapters 2 through 4 are not for the quantitatively challenged. For me the book's most evocative idea is illustrated in Chart 1-5, which suggests a much broader and longer term view of the customer as captured by the enterprise marketing concept. Enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars Great Disappointment.......1999-06-25

Martin does another disservice to his readers with this book. It is a compliation of anecdotes, stories and hype. It also contains repetitive material from his other books.

Sadly, it is not recomnmended.

4 out of 5 stars An important book; not Martin's Best, but essential reading.......1999-02-06

There is one quote in this book which alone makes it worth the price of purchase: "Most systems being developed today are the wrong systems." The book essentially explains why this is true and what to do about it. Anyone building enterprise systems needs to understand this concept and reckon with it. Ignore it at your own risk. While the book is not fun to read because it does not take this ball and run with it clearly and forcefully starting at the beginning and proceeding to the end, it illuminates the subject in important ways -- vital ways. Martin's mind operates at a higher speed and in different ways from the minds of most people ... and he is usually right. I'd be suspect of anyone claiming the capability to build systems today who does not understand the issues and concepts in this book. Buy it and read it, then read it again.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......1998-10-12

The great transition is a great disappointment for people trying to understand transformational change and organization alignment. The work is largely a compilation of ideas, stories, and other items generated by others over the last 20 years. People looking for the same degree of clarity found in Martin's groundbreaking Information Engineering series will be sorely disappointed. There are many better works on this subject than this. Sorry, but this ones not worth the time or the money in my opinion.

    Book Description

The most urgent task for companies today is to take a hard look at the future. To remain competitive, management must nurture a strong capability for self-development and a strong corporate culture, both of which form part of the foundation for improvement. But simply understanding management techniques doesn't mean you know how to use them. You need the tools and technologies for implementation. In Building Organizational Fitness, Fukuda extends the power of his managerial engineering methodology into the context of the top management strategic planning role.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Landmark, important book.......2000-03-28

Although Fukuda's work is less well-known than Ohno's Toyota Production System, his approach by contrast, especially in leaned down organizations, is directed to the right level - management - where improvement yields 10X leverage, vs. shop floor effort that are slower and one-to-one. As industry leaders are learning, it's management and supervision that need to understand continuous improvement methodologies.

4 out of 5 stars Practical guide for managing projects.......2007-09-05

Authors Shan Rajegopal, Philip McGuin and James Waller know what they are talking about and share solid information on project management, but their book reflects their roots as consultants who eschew simple language in favor of buzzwords. In one colorful example, they write: "PPM is a paradigm shift in thinking, its successful implementation driven from the top down, spearheaded by executive and senior management sponsorship and responsibility." Aside from the dense prose, the book illuminates the importance of using project management as a strategic tool¨, and then it tells you how to do it. It can help make your organization more nimble and responsive, and it gives special, useful attention to software considerations. We recommend this detailed work on a subject that is crucial to contemporary organizations.
