Book Description
Shut Up, Stop Whining & Get a Life
This is not your typical self-help book. You won't find any motivational platitudes or cute business parables here. This is more of a "get off your butt and get to work" approach that can help you achieve more success, make more money, improve your business, and have more fun.
Larry Winget doesn't pull any punches here. He believes that business gets better when businesspeople get better through personal growth. And it works the same way in your personal life-husbands and wives improve each other when they improve themselves, and kids improve when their parents do. In other words, everything in life gets better when you get better, and nothing gets better until you get better.
This book can make you better, but it will probably tick you off. Winget is direct, caustic, and controversial. You won't like or agree with everything he has to say. Yet his advice is full of wisdom and truth that can't easily be argued with.
Words from Shut Up, Stop Whining & Get a Life that prove that this book is anything but typical:
"If you don't have much going wrong in your life, then you don't have much going on in your life."
"When you work, work! When you play, play! Don't mix the two."
"What you think about, talk about, and do something about is what comes about."
"When it quits being fun-quit."
"Time management is a joke."
And that's just the beginning!

Practical steps to take control of your life and get results
He might seem harsh from time to time, but Larry Winget's unique approach to personal development-combining blunt truth with irreverent humor-is really based on love of self and love of others. Life is serious, but that doesn't mean we should always take it so seriously. Larry's message is simple: life isn't as complicated as it seems and most people would find more success, and more happiness, in their lives if they'd do a few simple things-take responsibility for their actions, lighten up, and start doing the right things instead of the wrong things. By forcing readers to look truthfully at their own lives, this refreshingly honest approach to self-improvement leaves readers nowhere to turn but the mirror-and proves that when we stop making excuses we start succeeding.
Larry Winget (Paradise Valley, AZ) is one of the most successful professional speakers in America. He is known as the Pitbull of Personal Development(TM), speaking worldwide to corporations and associations over one hundred times per year, delivering hardcore self-help that's funny.

If this doesn't help . . you are beyond self help........2007-10-20

Inspirational!.......2007-10-08
This book is fantastic! I love to listen to audio books on the way to work. A good audio book almost makes you want to get stuck in traffic!
Of course, if you listen to Larry Winget, you will find out that the traffic jam is your fault!! Shut up! Stop complaining about the traffic jam! Get a life! If you didn't want to be stuck in traffic jams on the way to work than you should write entire books based on one sentence and make a great living off it! Also, trumpet your seminars from the tallest buildings or thickest books or most annoying audio books to get interest and tour, tour, tour!
That's true! Listen, if you don't want to buy this book, let me sum up what you need to do. Larry's right. Shut up. Not making it? Not paying the bills? House not big enough? Don't hate. Find out what your skills are and see how that can make you money and bust your butt. I have two start-up businesses that may go nowhere but sitting and watching idiotic televion won't improve my lifestyle, I guarantee it. Hey, I did it! And without insulting you! Just go do it. And Larry, stop contributing to global warming with all that hot air. Just give your seminars and don't hate. That includes the fat people you hate so much. I'm not fat but I'm not bigoted against them as you say you are.
Questionable Advice.......2007-10-04
I like Winget's approach -- we all need a kick in the butt once in awhile, but his information is questionable in too many areas.
On Health: Winget insists all physical problems are our own fault. I agree with the theory, but it shouldn't be presented as a blanket statement. My wife was born with a defective heart and has to live with the problem. How did she "create" that?
On Stress: Winget tells us that stress happens when we know the right thing to do and choose to do the wrong thing. Excuse me, but how does that apply to being caught behind a traffic accident on the way to work, a loss of faith, the death of a loved one . . . what are the "right" choices to make when you come home to find you've been robbed?
On Relationships: Winget, on his second marriage and an admitted adulterer (with an adultress as a wife) claims he always likes his wife but doesn't always love her. I don't know what planet he's living on. I've been with my wife for thirty years and, although we don't always like each other, we've never doubted our love for each other.
Those are just a few of the problems I have with this otherwise entertaining book. It's a good read, and makes you take a look at yourself, but please don't embrace it as your new bible. The information is too simplistic and general.
Kick in the butt!.......2007-09-23
I love this book! He has a very direct and no nonsense method for delivering the message about getting it done. You may wince while reading some sections of this book because of the truth of it.
Standard Material, Different Approach.......2007-09-10
Larry Winget is terrific. He's in-your-face and irreverant (which, to me, comes across as funny). If you're a self-improvement junkie, however, you'll recognize literally everything in this book as originally coming from another source -- everyone from Buddah to Wayne Dyer to Julius Fast. Larry Winget is Tony Robbins with a different physical image and approach, although both are enthusiastic, funny, entertaining, and full of information.
As a self-improvement junkie for over forty years, I don't agree with everything Winget says. He's sure he's right and I'm sure he's wrong. My biggest argument concerns the idea that we create every medical issue we have. I've heard this one many times before . . . all from self-improvement gurus who have never really been sick a day in their lives. Yes, I agree that people can create ulcers and migranes and even cancer, but I'd like to ask Mr. Winget and the rest of the "experts" how my husband manifested his bayonet wound from Vietnam, how I created the extra heart nerve bundle I was born with, or how Michael J. Fox (great attitude, careful with his health) caused Parkinson's Disease. Or how the always-upbeat, active, and cautious Luciano Pavarotti created pancreatic cancer. Unlike Winget, I believe some things do Just Happen. It's hard for me to believe my daughter's seat belt magically released during an auto accident, leaving her with a concussion, because she had a bad attitude.
Aside from a few personal problems such as the health issue, this book will get you motivated. But once you're motivated, you need to be able to use that motivation or you'll just be enthusiastic for awhile and then fall back into your old routine. Even Winget declares that you have to know what you want and have a plan before getting all fired up.
For those who have run up against this problem in the past, I suggest the audiobook "Before You Hire A Life Coach . . . Heal Your Problems With Pyramid Problem Solving." Pyramid Problem Solving will (finally!) lead you to what you honestly want, bottom line. It does not stop with what you think you want, what you wanted ten years ago, what someone else has convinced you that you want, or what you think you should want. It gets right to the bottom, THEN you can use motivational material and finally find success.
I wish everyone who reads this book (or any other self-help material) all the success in the world. It's taken me a long time (and a lot of energy and money) to finally get to my own honest "This Is What I Want," and I'm in my fifties.

An excellent guide to learning how to guide young children........1999-06-04
This book is a valuable to the beginning early childhood teacher as it is to the experienced teacher. You will see new ways in which to deal with behaviors that seemed impossible before. It is very easy to read and would be an excellent addition to any early childhood library.

Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Book on Management.......2005-09-22
I first read "Management" by Hellriegel and Slocum when I was doing my MBA in 1989. Management was one of my favourite subjects then since I needed practical guidance on how to effectively plan, lead, motivate, organise and control my large department in my organisation with large numbers of subordinates under me. I then found the book to be very useful, easy to understand and logical and I used it to achieve excellent results in the subject.
Some few years after graduation, I was back at the university, being a part time lecturer in Management. I again used the book as one of the recommended textbooks. I have since stopped lecturing and still find that the authors have kept the book updated and relevant to the current thinking and practice of management. For students doing an undergraduate course in management, I strongly recommend the book as it is comprehensive, properly structured to introduce the subject and then step-by-step develop it to the end. As a facilitator, I also find the Annotated Instructor's Edition to be very handy as it covers all the topics that are required at undergraduate level and help the instructor prepare and conduct classes. The various "Insights" are very important in highlighting some aspects of the topics. The numerous case studies are also very critical in reinforcing the practical application of the important and interesting subject of management.
ITS A STUDY GUIDE!!!.......2004-12-19
I was MISLEAD by the title of this listing, since there is no picture I thought it was an actual textbook, only softcover. When it arrived it turns out to be a study guide to the textbook!? I am a struggling college student and I lost $45 shipped on this one. (you dont need the study guide unless you have money to burn and and dont know how to take notes in class;p) I had to buy the hardcover textbook of course, another hefty $120 at the time...good going amazon, next time put a picture, or dont offer it for sale!
it is truly an excellent book.......1999-09-16
Teaching from this book is pure pleasure. It is well organized, up-to-date,and has excellent examples.
easy to read; great graphics; competencies are real plus.......1999-09-11
An excellent basic management book. Total coverage of the field. Great examples of managers from all walks of life and all colors.
great book........1999-08-24

How to Think Like a Behavior Analyst
ASIN: 0123008506 |
Book Description
The US Dept. of Education, in conjunction with the US Dept. of Health and Human Services, recently unveiled a $50 million effort to expand research on early childhood cognitive development. A key issue identified requiring more information and research was the education and professional development of educators. Along these lines, Doug Greer has prepared a book discussing how best to teach, how to design functional curricula, and how to support teachers in using state-of-the-art science instruction materials.
The book provides important information both to trainers of future teachers, current teachers, and to supervisors and policy makers in education. To trainers there is information on how to motivate, mentor, and instruct in-service teachers to use the best scientifically based teaching strategies and tactics. To in-service teachers, there is information on how to provide individualized instruction in classrooms with multiple learning and behavior problems, school interventions to help prevent vandalism and truancy, and how curricula and instruction can be designed to teach functional repetoirs rather than inert ideas. To policy makers and supervisors, the book discusses how to determine the effectiveness of curricular innitiatives toward meeting mandated standards in national assessments.
Doug Greer was recently awarded the Fred S. Keller Award for Distinguished Contributions to Education by APA for the research and application of the material covered in this book. School programs incorporating the material used in this book have produced 4-7 times more learning outcomes for students than control and baseline educational programs (see www.cabas.com)
The book provides research-based and field-tested procedures for:
* Teaching students of all ability levels ranging from preschool to secondary school
* How to teach special education students in the context of a regular classroom
* Best practices for all teachers to teach more effectively
* Means of monitoring and motivating teachers' practices
* A comprehensive and system-wide science of teachingpost modern-postmodern!
* Tested procedures that result in four to seven times more learning for all
students
* Tested procedures for supervisors to use with teachers that result in
significant student learning
* Tested procedures for providing the highest accountability
* A systems approach for schooling problems that provide solutions rather
than blame
* Parent approved and parent requested educational practices
* Means for psychologists to work with teachers and students to solve
behavior and learning problems
* A comprehensive systems science of schooling
* An advanced and sophisticated science of pedagogy and curriculum design
* Students who are not being served with traditional education can meet or
exceed the performance of their more fortunate peers,
* Supervisors can mentor teachers and therapists to provide state of the
science instruction
* Parent education can create a professional setting for parents, educators,
and therapists to work together in the best interests of the student,
* Teachers and supervisors who measure as they teach produce significantly
better outcomes for students,
* Systemic solutions to instructional and behavioral problems involving
teachers, parents, supervisors provide means to pursue problems to their
solution,
* A science of teaching, as opposed to an art of teaching, can provide an
educational system that treats the students and the parents as the clients.

Designing Teching Strategies.......2007-03-18
SMART! Nicely written and very clear language. Public school systems could learn alot from this book!
Most important text since Cooper, Heron, & Heward.......2006-03-31
This text explains EXACTLY how to make the everyday practice of teaching with ABA work BEYOND the one-to-one home program for a single student. It is the most comprehensive extension of "what to do and how to do it" since Cooper, Heron, & Heward's "Applied Behavior Analysis."
What Dr. Greer dubs the "ABA Systems Approach" springs from the university informing comprehensive application of behavior analsyis to schooling settings (CABAS schools). However, the text can also stand indepenent of that special environment; and its contents are immediately applicable to individual practitioners in home and community settings.
Chapters summarize advances in practice and current research in verbal behavior; creating literacy and mathematics curricula for students who need ABA methodology to learn; and how to supervise other professionals in advancing their ABA and research skills.
Especially useful are tables that translate students' performance trouble into potential repertoires that may not be fully taught or reinforcement contingencies that may be lacking; and team actions that would remedy those problems.

Management: A Skills Approach (2nd Edition)
ASIN: 0873934164 |
Book Description
Strategic Quality Management is written for people who choose to be strategists-people who choose to ensure the success of their improvement efforts by integrating them into the strategic man-age-ment of their organizations. This book comprehensively addresses the elements required to ensure long-term momentum for improvement. In addition, it discusses continuous improvement from several per-spectives (Historical, Strategic, Behavioral, Process and Results, and Futuristic) and describes why those perspectives are all essential for an improvement initiative to be successful. Also included are specific improvement models, flowcharts, and checklists which are useful in the application of the im-prove-ment philosophies and tools described in the text. The foundation for Strategic Quality Man-age-ment (SQM) is the Five P's Model which emphasizes the need for alignment of organizational Pur-pose, Principles, Processes, and people in order to achieve Performance excellence. Each of the Five P's is discussed separately as an essential element of SQM, then in terms of its impact on the other four P's.

Customer Reviews:
DO NOT BUY.......2007-06-08
This book only pulls out the definitions from the text, no outline information as indicated is provided. May be if you buy the additional internet sample tests it could be more useful, but I was not about to waste more money with this book or company.
The best on research methodology for business.......2003-08-03
One have to think on scientific research. There are lots of good books on research methodology for social sciences, engineering and other technology related sciences. But for business and management this one is the best I found. Comprehensive, logical and easy to follow. Very suitable for undergraduate students.
Good book, but way overpriced.......2002-08-09
This is a good book for the business student or consultant that has to frequently perform research and data analysis. Several methods and concepts are outlined. The topic of "research methods and data analysis" is not the most exciting; so don't have your expectations high that it's going to be interesting reading. On the other hand, if your objective is to learn how to apply certain techniques in data analysis, research, or conducting surveys, you'll find this book helpful....
I had bought this book...(used, but in excellent condition) so it was a great buy...
Long tarded explanation, but lots of examples.......2001-04-11
Now, I bought this book for my degree requirement. The explanation might be long winded at some time, but the examples given are really good. It make me able to comprehend it easily. The graphics in this book is not too good as the publisher tends to use only one colour which can make reading become boring. This book can be used as a good reference as it explains steps about conducting research and how to present written report. This book can be more interesting if simple, direct explanation is used.
Good elementary overview of research methodology.......2000-10-25
This book is not as advanced as the PhD level, but it is a good supplement to PhD material. If you've ever been there, you know Cook and Campbell can be hard to understand, and Sekaran explains most concepts at a very easy level.

Book Description
William Glasser, M.D., puts his successful choice theory to work in our schools--with a new approach in increasing student motivation.
"Dr. Glasser translates choice theory into a productive, classroom model of team learning with emphasis on satisfaction and excitement. Working in small teams, students find that knowledge contributes to power, friendship and fun. Because content and the necessary student collaboration skills must be taught, teachers need to develop skills if they are to use this model successfully. The dividends are 'turned-on ' students and satisfied teachers."
--Madeline Hunter, University of California at Los Angeles
"Choice Theory in the Classroom is a landmark book, without question one of the most important and useful books for teachers to appear in a long while. Written with rare lucidity and grace, the book has numerous instantly usable ideas that will contribute fundamentally to the success of classroom teachers. William Glasser combines his extensive theoretical expertise and wide practical experience to provide a practical and illuminating guide for teachers [that] should be required reading in every college of education in the country."
--David and Roger Johnson, University of Minnesota
"Choice Theory in the Classroom presents an insightful analysis of what is wrong with traditional school and what need to be done about it. Dr. Glasser gives a compelling rationale for the use of learning-teams in schools to capture the excitement and commitment students display in sports but rarely in the classroom. The book is well written and persuasive. I hope every teacher in America buys it, believes it, and behaves accordingly."
--Robert Slavin, John Hopkins University

One of the Giants!.......2007-05-13
Glasser is defenitely one of the extra-sensory GIANTS! A great tool for anyone with an open mind to upgrade their teaching skills. If you only beleive in what your 5 senses tell you then this book is probably not for you.
Choice Theory for Science Teachers is a joke. .......2007-02-06
Let me start by saying this book is not useless. William Glasser is an egomaniac, but he has some good ideas (though they arn't as original as he claims they are). The eternal concept of always having a choice is important and can help student and teacher alike. However, as a science teacher, there was one section of the book that completely ruined it for me.
Glasser likes to describe everything as choice; we are depressing rather than depressed, because being depressed is a choice (forget clinical depression -- doesn't exist, says Glasser)... mark 1 point against Glasser for throwing medical research into the fire. What REALLY got me upset (As a science teacher) was this little diddy -- "Wehn you run on a hot day, you sweat, but do not be misled into thinking that the running is causing the sweating. It is not. The sweating is the correct or normal physiological component of the total behavior; running..." (pp 53). While the aforementioned philosophy might be a *useful* way to think about things, it is scientifically WRONG. There is a direct cause and effect link between running and sweating (well documented on the microscopic level!) -- to imply, many times, that science is wrong to me, a science teacher, is offensive.
Again, this book is not useless, but it should not be considered scientific. The concept of choice theory and 'total behaviors' are potentially useful, just like the mental tricks used by Buddhists for thousands of years might be useful -- but, now matter how much he thinks it is, Glasser's "revolutionary" choice theory is NOT scientific.
I did read the whole book. I got furious at it a few times, but I don't regret reading it. It has some good ideas -- but the Glasser thinks way too much of himself and his work. Only read this if you have a very open mind and are willing to work hard to find diamonds in the rough.
If you want a book that will help you in the classroom..........2006-01-26
...I don't believe this is a book you will want.
This is one of those books that I bought sight unseen based on the recommendations written by others on amazon (for this book and the precursor _Control Theory..._ by the same author). The prohibitive postage costs saw me retain possession rather than return it for a refund.
I haven't got a lot of time for dry books of educational theory without practical examples. Great, so the current system of institutionalized teaching is not doing what we want it to do and it needs to change. Fantastic, tell us how.
I never finished this book in detail. It was so dull, so unhelpful. Reading the glowing quotes on the back cover makes it seem that I skipped over something vital: "translates choice theory into a productive, classroom model", (I do hope the comma after productive was a type setting error and not intentionally used) "numerous instantly usable ideas". These phrases describe what I was after and I what I did not find.
It's possible I could choose to dig it out from the back of my bookshelf and re-read it, discover something of use but it's more likely I'll choose to spend my time in more interesting and profitable pursuits.
Fashionable Nonsense.......2005-10-06
Glasser takes an idea that has some merit and then keeps pushing it long after it becomes unhelpful. Glasser would have teachers quit using rewards and punishments to motivate students. He tries to justify this warm and fuzzy theory by pointing out misuses of rewards and punishments but its hard to understand how he could be blind to productive and fair uses of rewards and punishments that many teachers use. I know a poor teacher that use Glasser's model and a teacher that is good despite using it. If you want more objective research on schooling check out Stevenson and Stigler's the Learning Gap.
It's "Control Theory" all over again........2000-07-06
This book is the updated of "Control Theory in the Classroom". If you have that book, you don't need this one. If you don't, this is a great book for educators.
