An excellent reference, but it is an embarassment of riches, and as such it can't completely cover every area exhaustively. This would probably be extremely frustrating for a casual reader to absorb. I used this as a text book for a class with an extremely good instructor who backed up the material in the book very well. As such, the class and the book were a joy.

Even though the topics of this book are absolutely great and crucial for any CS student, I dislike the entire book !, its hard to follow the writer, i find it hard to keep with him !
too many complicated information with either Tiny explaination or more complicated explaination ,
its a very big book with many topics , i prefer reading seperate books with specific topics rather than this book,

I just completed a college course using this textbook... the course was tough, but the book was very good and useful. This is one textbook I won't be selling any time soon!

The practice problems provided in the book were usually very good, and the programming problems distributed with it were fun and educational, including topics like Buffer Overflows, Memory Optimizations, and Debugging with GDB, among others.

There are *some* problems with this book, but it doesn't suffer from the devastating flaws that plague most computer science textbooks. Some sections lack thorough explanations and examples, and the writting is a bit unclear at times. Some solutions to the practice problems are vague and don't really provide much insight on how to solve the problems. Luckily, these flaws only creep up in a few places.

Compared to most technical textbooks, however, this one really shines. It's not quite perfect, so I think 4 stars is appropriate.

What a splendid book! I wish I has gone to CMU and take this course. This book is written by CMU professors after teaching Computer Systems course for few years. This book covers broad spectrum of topics from Operating Systems, Compilers, Computer Architecture, Assembly Level Programming, Kernel internals, Linkers, etc from a programmer's perspective (as the title aptly says).

I am searching for words to describe the usefulness of this book. In my experience, I have had hard time learning some of the topics where Operating systems, Processor and Compilers intersect. For example, Linkers and Loaders, program disassembly using reverse-engineering, virtual memory in Kernel etc. After all the hard work, I found the right book which grinds all the famous books in different areas and gives the right juice for the real programmers to taste and digest.

[2] UNIX Internals: The New Frontiers by Uresh Vahalia

Excellent job. I really appreciate the work and content of this book.

This book is one of the best repositories of ideas and practical information about organizational change management that I've come across. While I've been heavily influenced by many of Thomas H. Davenport's books, I've found a wealth of fresh ideas in this book because each chapter is a paper written by one or more experts in a specific aspect of organizational change. I also like the way the book is organized into four sections that examine change and process.

Part I is among my favorites because each of the five chapters build upon each other to provide a clearly defined map for defining and implementing change strategies. Part II's three chapters drill down into the mechanics of processes and how they fit within the context of a change management strategy. I especially like chapter 7, which covers gap analysis and a framework with which to identify, define and understand business processes at a level that allows you to see the dependencies and impacts of proposed changes. I also like chapter 8, which links IT strategic planning to enterprise processes. This is a major gap that I find in one consulting engagement after another and the information in this chapter will provide a clear--if briefly described--approach to closing that gap.

More advanced process management topics are covered in Part III, are each of the five chapters can be read as standalone papers. My favorite was "The New Waves of Business Process Redesign and IT in Demand/Supply Chain Management", which reflects professional interests. Other chapters that are equally valuable cover process innovation, reengineering effectiveness and business process impact case studies.

The final four chapters that comprise Part IV are predictions about the nature of IT and services in this century. Each are interesting and will contain ideas that can be incorporated into current projects or future plans.

Overall this book is invaluable because it provides the points of view of a large number of academic and industry experts, and all of the material can be put into practice.

    I bought this book for a college course. I had very little knowledge of Access and this book was extremely helpful. I often found that computer books start at an intermediate level or so basic that you fall asleep. This book is very well illustrated and takes you step by step, starting with the very basics of Access and slowly building to more complex usage. All the examples are realistic and flow continually from tutorial to tutorial. Each step is illustrated with hints/solutions on possible problems encountered. I liked the fact that a case study is used starting with Tutorial 1 and continues throughout the book so you see a work in progress. You also don't have to create a database from scratch and waste time typing in data. I highly recommend this book for beginners.

    I bought this book for a college course to learn Access for work. I had tried to learn the program on my own only to find this book extremely helpful in understanding databases, queries, forms, and reports. I finished the book is about 2 weeks for a 4 month course! Do not buy this book if you want to learn customizing, macros, and VBA. This book is for beginners, but what I have found out (by ordering another book), is that the New Perspective series has to be the best there is at taking you step-by-step as to the process of creating within MS Office Programs. Buy reference books once you acquaint yourself with the programs. This book will take you to a beginner-intermediate status, and a reference book beyond that.

    The tutorials, graphics, layout... simply awesome! Learn at your own pace with this book from the basics to advanced queries, switchboards, macros, and even a bit of VBA. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn Access 2000.

    I used the New Perspective Series earlier to learn Visual Basic and was impressed. This book was outstanding as well. The Series has three choices for learning Access: one titled "Brief," a second titled "Introductory" and this most complete volume titled "Comprehensive."

    Most will do just the ten Access tutorials, skipping two introductory Windows 98 tutorials. Each tutorial has two to four one-hour sessions. More than one hundreds pages of quizzes, case studies, and labs supplement the tutorials and make the book an excellent text for junior college or commercial courses.

    You need a working copy of Access 2000. For each tutorial, the student designs tables, queries, forms, and other elements step by step at his computer. This book is very detailed and very clear. Almost every keystroke is described, and every important input and output is captured with screen shots.

    Base files and data for the tutorials and problem sets first have to be downloaded first from the Internet. No table data entry is required except where required for learning.

    The book is beautifully printed and illustrated, almost totally free of typos, and lays flat for ease of use.

    Don't turn your nose up when the first two Windows tutorials describe how to use a mouse. It gets really good quickly and ends with macro and Visual Basic For Applications in tutorials 9 and 10.

      Distributed business component computing--the assembling of business components into electronic business processes, which interact via the Internet--caters to a new breed of enterprise systems that are flexible, relatively easy to maintain and upgrade to accommodate new business processes, and relatively simple to integrate with other enterprise systems. Companies with unwieldy, large, and heterogeneous inherited information systems--known as legacy systems--find it extremely difficult to align their old systems with novel business processes. Legacy systems are not only tightly intertwined with existing business processes and procedures but also have a brittle architecture after years of ad-hoc fixes and offer limited openness to other systems. In this book, Willem-Jan van den Heuvel provides a methodological framework that offers pragmatic techniques for aligning component-based business processes and legacy systems.

      Van den Heuvel's methodology is based on three building blocks: reverse engineering, which allows legacy systems to be componentized; forward engineering, which derives a set of business components from requirements of the new business processes; and alignment of new business processes and componentized legacy systems. Van den Heuvel provides a theoretical foundation for these, with chapters that discuss component-based development, introduce a case study that is used throughout the book to illustrate the methodology, and assess methods and technologies for legacy integration, component adaptation, and process alignment. He describes the methodological framework itself and its techniques to align new business processes with legacy systems by adopting a meet-in-the-middle strategy. Drawing on topics from a wide range of disciplines, including component-based development, distributed computing, business process modeling, and others, Aligning Modern Business Processes and Legacy Systems offers theoretically grounded practical methodology that has been explored and tested in a variety of experiments as well as some real-world projects.

              Information is not taken seriously. Much is said about the information age, the information economy, the information society, and particularly about information technology, but little about information itself. If these are important, then so is information. But information is not as other goods: it has some peculiar characteristics. It cannot be displayed for sale without giving it away in the process. Sold, it goes to the buyer but still remains with the seller. Buying entails expressing demand in ignorance for buyers who do not know just what it is that they do not know. Such characteristics have long been recognised by economists, but it is not generally economists who have most to say about the importance of information. This privilege is exercised by senior managers, who speak passionately about knowledge-based, learning organizations; by politicians and public servants, anxious to compensate with policy and programme for the information failure of organization and market; and by specialists in telecommunications and information technology, bent on adding value to what they treat as just a commodity. All are particularly enthusiastic about the innovation which springs from information. Information usually requires new information. Finding, acquiring, and mixing this new information with that already in use presents problems, not least because complex information transactions are required rather than simple information transfer. Solutions can be devised, but only by accommodating the characteristics of information. This book contrasts the way innovation is normally regarded in a variety of areas from eighteenth-century agriculture to high technology, from technology transfer to industrial espionage, from corporate strategy to patents and independent inventors with how it appears from what is termed an 'information perspective', that is one that puts information first. The results are intriguing, suggesting that radically different approaches to innovation (and organization) should be considered.
