Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-05-18

This book deserves a "10" not a "5". This is one of those rare "self-help" books that is down to earth, easy to read and you can put into practice what you learned immediately. There is no psychobabble fluff here. It does not spend 200 pages discussing the core of the problem then only 1 chapter dedicated to resolving it. Mr. Khan did an excellent job condensing all his knowledge into small concise chapters about all aspects of life - from self, attitude, work & relationships; every bit of advise is useable and instantly doable. This book presents common human problems and effective/practical ways to deal with them now. How it works is you find the chapter that addresses your problem and it tells you how to effectively begin to deal with it. I cannot recommend this book more. If you have to buy only one self-help book, make it this one. It is that good.

5 out of 5 stars It DOES really help.......2007-05-13

Great advises, very easy to read. You can refer back to it over and over again. The author talks about: Attitude, Work and People. Format: articles.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2007-01-10

This book is everything it says it is and more !!.

Thanks Adam...you make lifes problems into a way i can understand and change !.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you (really!) need to know........2006-12-08

Suppose you are an intelligent human being that until now has been thinking: all these self help-books ... can they be really working? There are so many of them! I'm sure all these books repeat the same old tired cliches! And all these screaming covers look so tasteless!

Ten years ago I was thinking that. As I am a very curious journalist and writer (in Amsterdam, the Netherlands), I started to read self help-books. I thought: there are so many!, I'm sure all these books repeat the same old tired cliches!, all these screaming covers look so tasteless!

After my ten years of reading these books I know: there are indeed lots and lots of these tasteless, screaming cliche-books. But don't let that scare you. You are doing yourself a disfavor if you abandon the whole genre. As in every genre there are brilliant exceptions.

One of these is the extremely practical and sensible book "Self-Help Stuff that Works - How to become more effective with your actions and feel good more often" by Adam Khan. It specters the whole genre of self-help. Mr Khan read all these (scientific, serious and not so serious) books, thought about them all, selected the worthy thoughts and theories and wrote in 117 chapters and 368 pages everything there is to know, everything you need to know. It's easy to read (because it's well written), it tells great stories and it is concise. It made my life better.

It makes promises and delivers. The 117 chapters are divided in three parts: Attitude, Work and People. It tells you THE thing to know (and to do!) about, for example: how to be a sensible optimist, the best way to criticize, what to do with failure, when you are too polite, how to improve your self-esteem, how to find a lifemate and 100 more necessary things to know. This book tells you things that are not a luxury to know. In a modest, intelligent, moving, funny and easy to read-way.

Indeed, no bull, no frills, no hype.

5 out of 5 stars really helpful stuff.......2006-08-09

Not everyone has had a happy childhood or has been educated by appropiate parents. If ever wonder how to deal with bad feelings, depression, anger, or just impossibility to "fit" in this world in an effective way, this book contains logical advise, wisdom in every of the chapters it presents. A must buy.

Written in a very straight-forward and practical, yet research-based, style that users, regardless of their age/gender/nationality/race/etc. find engaging because it focuses on their personal need to enhance their effectiveness, career potential (e.g., salaries, promotions, job choice and flexibility), and general well-being (the book takes work/life issues seriously). The subsequent chapters then present each of the characteristics that predict success in more detail, as well as tools and techniques for enhancing readers' personal and professional success. For beginning to mid-level executives.

5 out of 5 stars Paula helps students gain personal mastery.......2007-09-05

I've used Paula's book for undergraduate teaching with very good success. Students find her point of view interesting and enjoy the read. This is not the standard OB textbook with a "march of failed theories". Instead, Paula effectively knits observations, insights, research from a host of traditions toward insights for managing the daily life of sensible beings.

    Book Description

"This is a wonderful book for managers to read. It is comprehensible, concise and filled with useful wisdom on the human aspects of leadership."

—Mike Wilk, Partner and Practice Leader, Ernst & Young

"The 6 Habits of Highly Effective Bosses provides an excellent training model that a manager can both fully appreciate and easily implement."

—Raymond G. Steitz, V.P. of Global Human Resources, Warner Chilcott Laboratories

People management can be the most rewarding—and frustrating—part of a leader's job. What aptitudes are valued most in managers and executives? Substantial research and a wealth of shared organizational experience demonstrate that it is a manager's "people skills" that truly make the difference.

In The 6 Habits of Highly Effective Bosses, co-authors Stephen E. Kohn and Vincent D. O'Connell present an easy-to-read, sensibly presented review of six indispensable human relations practices used by the bosses everyone admires - and likes to work for - the most. With a combined fifty years of experience helping companies resolve "people problems" in the workplace, management coaches and leadership trainers Kohn and O'Connell guide managers through a sensible, incremental model of supervisory "people skills" development.

The 6 Habits of Highly Effective Bosses also provides a means for managers to coach themselves toward goals that they are encouraged to set for themselves, and the end result is not only knowledge gained, but also greater applied supervisory competency. By practicing the strategically conceived exercises, managers can apply the recommended skills to real workplace supervisory challenges.

For the busy manager seeking effective and timely results from leadership development training, this book can become a springboard for solid professional growth and accelerated success in the development of all-important people management skills.

Stephen E. Kohn has twenty-five years of experience as a management coach, counselor and therapist, specializing in the workplace. Kohn practices in White Plains, NY.

Vincent D. O'Connell has twenty-seven years of experience in behavioral sciences and healthcare. He specializes in corporate training, curriculum development, content development and human resources consulting. O'Connell lives and works in Bethlehem, PA.

There are six habits of human relations which the authors have identified as habits used by bosses everyone admires. The pioneers of the Dimensional Model for managerial behavior demonstrate how to master skills that boost productivity

Robert Lefton and Victor Buzzotta, cofounders of Psychological Associates, have revolutionized managerial procedure with their Dimensional Model--a behavioral standard that has been adapted and imitated by companies all over the world.

Leadership Through People Skills outlines this model, as the authors explain in detail how people skills work and provide exercises designed to improve them. They also offer strategies for using these skills in the right situations, at the right times, in the right ways with direct reports, peers, and bosses.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars good general book.......2007-01-28

I haven't read a lot of books about leadership, perhaps four or five. I liked this one the best because it provided concrete examples and strategies for improving one's leadership skills. People harp about leadership skills starting in high school or even earlier, and many people can point to those who are obviously natural leaders, but usually it's presented to young people as if you either are or are not a leader. And if you are not, then just move to the back of the line and your life of mediocrity! This book showed that the ability to be a good leader can be learned, instead of being the mystical, unknowable talent that teachers imply it to be. I would buy it for my teenager or anyone who wants to improve this aspect of their work life.

    3 out of 5 stars Another 2 X 2 Personality Grid book.......2004-12-22

I enjoyed The Platinum Rule better.

LTPS may have been the original? or one of the early ones, and in on its 3rd re-worked title, but I got that been there done that feeling.

There are too many books in my library, and this one is off to the used bookstore. It's not a bad book, but how many 2 X 2 type grid books does a person need!

5 out of 5 stars True Grit, No Fluff.......2004-01-11

With all the fluff books on leadership around these days, it is great to see one that has true grit. This is not Tom Peters ranting, nor is it the leadership secrets of the buffalo/Attila the Hun/sharks, or whatever the flavor of the week is. This is pure applied social science.

Though this book did not 'revolutionize' the way I manage, like Blanchard/ Hersey's 'Management of Organizational Behavior,' or Aubrey Daniels' 'Bringing Out the Best in People' did, this is a very useful book. It really illuminates the Blake/ Mouton Managerial Grid, and the Ohio State and Michigan studies that spawned the Grid, through clear, concrete examples. And this exposition is necessary, since these very important topics are usually glanced over in five pages in most Management/OB texts.

This book packs a ton of strategies for driving performance into its 225 pages. By sticking to scientifically sound principles, its recommendations appear right on track, placing just enough tension into the system to get results. As to its effectiveness, hit me up in a couple of months. However, as a down-to-earth, practical guy, I have a very strong gut feeling that the strategies in this book are right on target.

5 out of 5 stars Scientific approach to people skills.......2003-11-17

I highly recommend this book for the following reasons:

1)The authors are PhD in Psychology and their viewpoints are backed by empirical psychological studies. You won't find BS management theories in this book.

2)Very few pages are wasted. The authors apparently do not believe in writing fillers to sell a thicker book for a higher price.

3)The scientific approach to dealing with different management types is refreshing. It is not something that is found in most leadership/management books.

4)The book is helpful even if you are not in managment. The theories and suggestions outlined in this book can apply to one's personal life.

5 out of 5 stars The best book for teaching leadership to youngsters...........2002-01-24

I have looked long for books that can be used to teach leadership to young people (middle school and up). Susan Fritz is an ass't prof in the department of ag leadership at Univ. Nebraska-Lincoln, and she has pulled together 17 excellent chapters about leadership, in exercises that can be used with young people. Her writing is clear, the chapters and exercises well organized, and you can use these with your classes.

This is by far the best I have seen so far. I especially liked Ch 7, Creating the Vision and Establishing Goals, and Ch 14, Responding With Empathy.

As a college instructor, I have read many books similar to these--present a skill, provide an activity, etc., but then no application is given. However, this text is excellent because not only are the discussions on communication/leadership skills quite interesting & thorough, but the exercises provided are practical & ones that I will actually use when I teach. (Many similar texts have the silliest activities). But the very best part is the REFERENCES--sources cited are mostly up-to-date & always include some of the classic works in communication. This book is very impressive--practical, credible, and USEFUL!!!!

      Book Description

Trainees in group counseling and therapy often struggle to integrate an array of theories and concepts into practice, but to no avail. This group counseling book helps counselor/therapist trainees bring together the concepts of group work with the reality of working with complex group phenomena. It provides a productive, growth-promoting experience for learning group leadership. As readers learn and apply the material in Chen and Rybak' s book, they will build the repertoire of knowledge, skills and intervention techniques that they'll need as they embark on the restorative and rewarding--yet often complex and challenging--process of becoming a group practitioner. The book's five conceptual bases--interpersonal processes, experiential learning, the power of the here and now, process-focused leadership, and self as the instrument--set out the principles for successful leadership and meaningful client change. The practical methods discussed within this effective, coherent framework help readers learn how to bring about therapeutic change for group members within a brief time period. This time-sensitive feature of the framework is especially precious as "cost containment" becomes a health care thrust in our era. The book functions as a step-by-step guide, from basic to advanced skills, as a means to help group leaders acclimate the group through the group process.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book a must read for group counseling.......2007-07-26

Through group counseling and the use of Dr. Chen's book I am able to communicate my feelings more openly in my relationships with significant others in my life. This has helped me to be more sensitive to the feelings of others and also to ask for help from others when I need it. I have learned a lot about my way of interacting with others and I have been able to see that I have connections to other people rather than focusing on differences. I am making more connections to other people and I have been able to make positive changes to the way I initiate interactions with others. This has helped to expand and strengthen my support system as well as strengthen my family unit.

      5 out of 5 stars A Valuable Reading Experience.......2003-12-11

As a high school counselor who has led many groups, both adolescent and adult, I am constantly searching for literature to better help me serve the group process. I consider myself fairly well-read in the areas of counseling, group leadership, and the group process. With that said, I am thoroughly impressed with this book by Chen and Rybak. Thus far, it is the most clearly written and most valuable book I have read on this subject. I find myself continually revisiting chapters over and over as I try to implement the skills and ideas outlined in this book. I believe that this book is definitely a must have for anyone interested in the group counseling process.

I like the book's many strengths (clear examples, helpful exercises, accessible and fluid language), but if I have to single out its greatest strength, then it would be its roadmap approach to the group process. As I read the book, I find myself challenged to examine my own ideas and beliefs as they relate to the field. I have to ask myself what my basic assumptions are about the interpersonal process. Starting from the beginning chapters, this book helps me establish a solid foundation from where I start my leadership journey.

Part Two (Basic Leadership Skills) of this book will be especially helpful for the beginning, less experienced group leaders. It takes the reader through the stepwise approach of starting a group from scratch, leading the first session, establishing a session's pace and feel, working on members' agendas, and working with tension and conflict. Chapter 6 "Working on Agendas" especially provides the readers with a powerful roadmap to follow. With its accessible language, a young counselor does not feel intimidated by the process, but instead, empowered.

Part Three (Advanced Leadership Skills) adds the flesh and muscle to the skeleton. This part can be extremely beneficial for the counseling students, although it really outlines the skills of a veteran group therapist. I love the way Chen and Rybak illustrate how counseling is more than just a series of skills and theories, but a very precise art that takes patience, touch, balance, and know-how. The advanced skills gives the readers something to strive for, while at the same time, further providing the veterans with challenges and approaches that keep the art fresh. Topics that I take special note include: Taking Risks in Communication, Stirring the Pot, and the Hot-Seat Method. Many excellent models for these advanced methods are provided.

I appreciate the authors' emphasis on the importance of reflective journal writing by the members and narrative session notes by the leaders. Throughout the text, Chen and Rybak offer excellent writing samples for both the group members and for the group leader. I like the way the authors close the circle by asking the reader to search inside for his own therapeutic voices and by challenging the reader to continue to grow and to live by the creative edge.

What I take most from the book, even more than the powerful skills and approaches offered, is the compassion, respect, and enthusiasm that the authors show for their subjects. They truly believe in the art of group counseling and the art of leading a successful group. They believe in the power of group. That passion permeates each page and washes over the reader. This book, in many ways, transcends the counseling field and speaks of truths that can be applied to all fields. I gained so much from this book and I will continue to use it as I continue to grow as a counselor, and more importantly, as a person. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in the helping profession, especially students, and to anyone who wants to better his or her leadership and communication skills.

5 out of 5 stars A book that is a personal mentor to me.......2003-12-04

I have read other books on the subject of group counseling and therapy and have found that most have one or two positive attributes. However, I find that "Group Leadership Skills" by Chen and Rybak has so many unique qualities (such as personable writing style, effective practice exercises, insightful leadership response samples, bountiful techniques of group counseling, and the emphasis on the development of the self as the instrument in group counseling, etc.) that I really take to heart.

When I read other books, the information felt distant to me. However, when I was reading Chen and Rybak, I felt that I was experiencing what actually goes on in real group sessions. Through the numerous case examples and reflection excerpts, I can see the problems, challenges, and breakthroughs that members and leaders might experience in the forming, storming, norming, and working stages. They truthfully and thoughtfully reflect the group dynamics and interpersonal processes. Now, I can fully appreciate the powerful effect that group interaction can have on individuals.

The way the book is written makes me feel confident that I can apply the knowledge and skills in my practice with all types of groups be it substance abuse groups, adolescent groups, elderly groups, ACOA groups, or groups of any other purpose. The book is written in the sequence of how a group progresses in its full life course and addresses all sorts of interpersonal dynamics even including those not easily recognized by the untrained eye. Therefore, it is quite adaptable to a wide range of group work.

Among the advanced leadership skills, I find the seven principles of constructive confrontation to be a guide or a blueprint in taking effective risks in communication not only in my professional life, but also in my personal life. It is a shame that I did not have the opportunity to learn these important skills earlier in my life, but I am grateful to have discovered them now in this book.

To those faint-hearted individuals, the hot-seat method and the method of stirring-the-pot in the working stage might appear a bit intimidating, but to me I find them to be extremely powerful interventions. I witnessed the hot-seat method and the method of stirring-the-pot to have the ability to evoke more intimate self-disclosure and in-depth interpersonal discovery, which are rare occurrences in our daily lives. Therefore, I consider these methods in this book to be gems in the world of counseling.

I want to say again how much I appreciate the sample leader responses provided throughout the book. What is unique about them is that these sample leader responses use compassionate and sincere language. When I read these samples, I feel like I can see myself using them in my practice. They are not the typical textbook jargon, but rather they resonate an empathic nature which speaks more from the heart than the head.

I was happy to find that multicultural sensitivity is placed in the context of conflict resolution. In our society, we rarely admit that diversity can create tension in a very subtle way that is beyond our language to explain, creating an atmosphere of discomfort and potential for misinterpretation. Chen and Rybak offer a conflict resolution method that brings about healing and resolution directly to the parties involved and insight to other members.

I feel this book is very consoling because it speaks to new leaders like myself. It helps us realize that we will face challenges and setbacks, but it also offers us hope that if we continue to practice, experiment, and trust our creative force within ourselves, we may master the art of group leadership one day.

I feel that this book acts as a personal mentor for me. Of all the textbooks I have read throughout my graduate study, no other book has had such a striking impact on me. I can see myself continuously consulting and reviewing the book when leading a group because the descriptions and examples are so realistic, focused, and concise. I highly recommend this book!
