Customer Reviews:
Useful Read.......2007-09-19
This is a valuable book for beginners and intermediates. Its detail as expected in any book is moderate. Learning the true methodologies of BPM requires experience and additional reading. This book however does serve as a useful tool in understanding BPM and its mehtodologies as well as standardising a roll out.
Practical Manual.......2007-02-22
Anyone who's interested in process improvement needs to invest in this book. Written in simple plain language, the book simplifies bpm and bpi.
Though I bought this book based on other people's reviews, I am proud to send mine. If you are new in business process management, redesign or even re-engineering, this is a good place to start. I have found this book as a great material with real-life examples. It is an excellent guide for implementing a process improvement or management project. I am currently working on a business process improvement project for one of my training programs and I have found the ideas expressed in this book handy.
As a six sigma specialist, I find myself reading similar books but this book stands out and I look forward to the next page as I read on.
Informative, Thorough, Interesting, Captivating.......2006-07-15
A must read publication. The author is consice and does not stray from the topic. It all comes down to how one manages processes in the business environment for maximizing efficiency. That is exactly what the book concentrates on.
The Author does a fantastic job of going into detail about important topics.
I am hoping for future publications from the author. I highly recommend this book.
Simply ... The Best.......2006-06-27
I am very blessed to have had the opportunity to come across the book after hearing from my friends that it was special. A topic so dull and drab made so interesting and simple is amazing and incredible.
Buy it !.......2006-06-06
This book is one of those typical exceptions that you come accross now and then. It is exceptionally good reading for both business and IT. It creates a common understanding of the typical challenges one meets when involved in an IT / BPM implementation project.
A book that you can actually use during all the phases of an implementation project. Buy it now! No really, do it.

Book Description
This book places a strong emphasis on good design practice, allowing readers to master design methodology in an accessible, step-by-step fashion. In this book, database design methodology is explicitly divided into three phases: conceptual, logical, and physical. Each phase is described in a separate chapter with an example of the methodology working in practice. Extensive treatment of the Web as an emerging platform for database applications is covered alongside many code samples for accessing databases from the Web including JDBC, SQLJ, ASP, ISP, and Oracle's PSP. A thorough update of later chapters covering object-oriented databases, Web databases, XML, data warehousing, data mining is included in this new edition. A clear introduction to design implementation and management issues, as well as an extensive treatment of database languages and standards, make this book an indispensable, complete reference for database professionals.
Customer Reviews:
incorrectly named.......2007-04-20
It should be named "how to writing SQL for MS Access, Oracle 7i and xxx" since that is all about. It is weird to me why "Design" is in the title. There is absolutely nothing covered on what is inside a RMDB, man.
Great purchase.......2007-03-09
This book was required by a course I am taking, so I can not buy another one, but I think it is a great book. It has also helps you learn a database language. I forgot what it is bec I did nt use it yet, but it very helpful.
Excellent, for practitioners and beginners. Other reviews are a puzzle.......2006-11-06
I was almost put off buying this book by some of the very negative reviews. I bought the book. I have designed a few databases but that is not my main job, and I wanted to get up to speed on database design and use for a short project that I am leading. I have bought several books on the subject, and this is one of the most useful. The book is detailed, which means that if you want to go into detail you can, e.g. on what normal form is and how to use it, of the difference between relational and OO design. However, the book is designed so that one does not have to go into detail, one can get a good overview of the subject and start creating databases soon after reading it. Perhaps this book offends some tecchy purists, but most business people who need to understand databases will find this book valuable.
The very big and so poor.......2006-05-22
DON'T BUY THIS BOOK! This is almost 1400 page book can teach nothing, unstructured not clear presentation of information can confusing students. It seems like authors don't understand some times what they are talking about. Not clear presentations of examples can to mislead readers.
After reading this book nobody wants working with Database design.
Too much and not enough.......2006-03-07
I also had this book as a text for a database design class in college. While reading it, I kept thinking to myself that I had learned more about practical database design from "Dummies" books. As a professional application developer, I would have to say that this book's only value is as a (seldom used) theoretical reference.

Great guide.......2007-10-19
All I have to say is that I used this book on two large campaigns and won both. It is great!
I approve!.......2007-08-31
I checked out a lot of reviews of other books before I bought this one, and I'm not disappointed. What's particularly great is that it really zeroes in on the local election with very specific ideas and tasks.
As I've worked on local elections for others, I can say that Thomas clearly knows what he's talking about, and he's taught me many things I didn't know. When it comes time to throw my hat in the ring myself, this book will be my bible.
Helpful Primer for First Time Candidates.......2007-07-19
This is probably the best $15 or so that you will spend on your campaign. There is lots of valuable advice which will come in handy as you embark on your first run for office. I ran for school board in my town and beat a 9-year incumbent with almost 60% of the vote. You could have heard a pin drop in the room when they announced the result. It was quite an upset. The book is a short read which you can rip through in a couple of days. A lot of the tactics I used in my campaign came straight from the book, especially targeting "good" voters when you have a limited budget.
Anyone running for local office for the first time would be wise to read through the book.
The best how-to-run-for-office book I've ever read.......2007-05-21
Robert J. Thomas is not a great writer in the conventional sense, but perhaps miraculously, this humble and unassuming 128 page mini-tome is the best book on running for office that I've ever read. Mr. Thomas gives you the information that you need to know without a lot of filler, and he gears the book to the most likely potential readership - the first-time campaigner without a lot of money, connections, or experience. No fluff, no filler, no frills. When I ran for office in 2004, I purchased five how-to-run-a-campaign books (see my other reviews), and this was the best of the bunch. Thank you, Robert J. Thomas! I only got 1.33% of the vote (Green Party candidate in five-way race), but the tips and techniques offered herein probably saved me from an even more humiliating defeat.
How To Run.......2006-11-10
How To Run would most likely help an aspiring politician and I may yet reference it for a friend's campaign however, the format makes it very difficult to read and the layout is confusing. The author also repeats himself quite a bit. The book is not very interesting nor is it easy to read but, if you want a book the you can reference occasionally this will suit you just fine.

Ralph Kimball's The Data Warehouse Toolkit translates the author's extensive real-world design experience into a truly useful guide to building data warehouses for today's corporations. Written in a no-nonsense prose style, the author gives developers and managers the basics of designing, building, and running data warehouses that are effective and useful to upper management.
This book begins with the fundamentals of what data warehouses are and how they differ from traditional databases used in online transaction processing (OLTP). (Basically, data warehouses look at trends in millions of database records drawn from across organizations.) Once the author establishes this foundation, he solidly introduces the issues of data-warehouse design, using samples drawn from a wide variety of industries, including grocery stores, inventory warehouses, shipping, financial services, cable TV subscriptions, insurance, and travel. The author succinctly describes the relevant "dimensions" of each industry. (These are the values or features that management will most likely want to track for each industry. The data warehouse must be prepared to answer these "questions.")
The last section of the book covers the process of actually designing a data warehouse, from conducting user interviews to planning for the hardware needed to run a data warehouse (where databases easily run in gigabytes and include millions of records). This text also includes a discussion of how to create effective front ends for users (which will report the results of data-warehouse queries).
For its scope and intelligence, The Data Warehouse Toolkit is required reading for any developer or manager who wants to get a perspective on data warehouses before building one. --Richard Dragan
Customer Reviews:
Dimensional Modeling Made Easy.......2003-09-26
Data warehosuing is a difficult subject to grasp. There are many disciplines that have to come together to make data warehousing work : database design, business understanding, management expertise, data mining, creating reports, project management, OLAP and more.
Finding a book that can full explain the full data warehousing picture is not possible, what one must look for is a series of books or materials that will together paint the full picture.
Building Dimensional Data Warehouses is one of the books that can help readers in the process of painting the whole data warehousing picture. Ralph Kimball is an experienced data warehousing leadder who has stayed away from hype and concentrates on facts.
The focus of this is book is creating the data structure for repositories in the data warehouse set-up. This is a highly recommended book for technical readers looking to enhance on their database design skills for building large data repositories that are optimized for providing analysis.
Business readers may obtain more value from reading some of the other of Mr. Kimball's books.
Please let me know if you have found this review helpful.
Great Starter.......2003-02-26
Great place to start learning about DW. The author builds the concepts layer upon layer. Very easy to follow the progression. Once you'e finished this book, then move on to Ralph's Lifecycle Toolkit for some nitty-gritty examples and much more about building data marts into datawarehouses.
A must read.......2002-11-14
This is the best book on dimensional modeling by the master himself.Equally useful for beginners as well as experts.
Data Warehousing by example.......2002-06-29
The real life implementation examples for different types of Data Warehouses from simple to the more complex, make this book one the better of the Data Warehousing books. Kimball is an leading authority in Data Warehouses since its beginnings, and the explanations and examples are very easy to understand. I took a Master's course in Data Warehousing and read Kimball's book and Ponniah's book(Data Warehousing fundamentals). Kimball's book was the better book of the two in how useful it was and easier to understand. The version I bought had a program to run reports based on the Data Warehouse structure for each type of example. It is an antiquated program (DOS based), but it is useful in learning and helps implement some actual Data Warehousing concepts. The program needs to be installed through the command line interface of the newer versions of Windows (2000 and XP).
Get the fundamentals of Dimension modeling from this book.......2002-05-01
This book contains concepts and implementation methodology associated with building and deploying a data warehouse.
To understand data warehouse, it is important to understand the difference between an OLTP system and a data warehouse (an OLAP system). The author first emphasizes this difference before getting into the nitty gritty of data modeling.
The author is a leading advocate of Dimension modeling. He gives clear reasons for doing so and then jumps into the techniques for dimension modeling, also called as Hub-and-Spoke architecture.
Book contains examples (in the form of chapters) of data warehouse models for many verticals such as shipping, insurance, banking, subscriptions, inventory. Going through these examples will help anyone to understand data modeling and to create a dimension model based on specific requirements.
The best book for fundamentals of data warehouse and especially, Dimension modeling.

Customer Reviews:
Leslie.......2006-03-21
I have read many articles and books on this topic. While most books cover the evauluation levels defined by Kirkpatrick, this book goes one step further by providing lots of practical examples on how to actually evaluate training at each level. Every page contains at least one useful tip!
How to measure training results.......2005-08-02
very practical information. Gave very easy steps to follow and easy to implement. Reinforced that training can be measured.
e-book beware.......2002-12-13
I ordered this book with the Adobe Digital Download. After running the install file 3 times, it still wouldn't work. It kept saying "None of the requested vouchers could be obtained."
I called Adobe twice and they said they don't support the e-Book reader! I checked their user forums at (...)and there are three other people with the same problem. I can't believe Amazon(.com) and Adobe sell a product neither one supports!
How to get up and running when training assessment is wanted.......2002-08-01
Jack J. Phillips' has been writing several books on assessing the impact of training and his latest book, co-authored with Ron D. Stone, is among the best ones, it is indeed a very good introductory book on evaluating training.
The more experienced training practitioner, who may have been using Kirkpatricks 4 levels, will also get a lot out of the book. It adds tools to Kirkpatricks levels but it also completes the Kirkpatrick model by adding a fifth lev, a ROI analysis. However, not everything may be measured in $ so the authors also include some ideas on how to present intangible assets in the reports.
A lot of the concepts have been presented in previous books, but here they are taken a step further when the authors give examples from their long experience within the field. Downloadable forms, worksheets, and checklists (at the publishers website!!), that may be adapted to various needs is a definite valuable add-on for practitioners who do not have an urge "to do it all on their own".
The book starts off with taking a look at the need for measurement and evaluation and presents the ROI-process as a framework for 6 types of measures, (Kirkspatricks' 4, the ROI and intangible assets). Then all levels, possible measurements etc are presented throughout the book, finishing off with key implementation steps. It is all wrapped in the ROI-process, a step-by-step "receipe" for planning, building and implementing the evaluation process.
So when the top management want to know if a training program is worth the money . . .
Reading the book may get you on the track. It may help you talk the language of Money a way that senior management understands.
This is in addition to building better programs.
And it sure was practical with a digital version on my laptop, that way I bing it with me whereever I go; really conveniant when being a consultant - -

An essential book for all would-be candidates.......2007-05-26
There are three books that I think all would-be candidates should buy: 1) How to Run for Local Office by Robert J. Thomas; 2) The Campaign Manager by Catherine Shaw; and 3) This one. When I ran for Congress in 2004, I relied on all three, whereas the other books I bought (five in all) offered little additional insight. Sadly, I "lent" this book to another candidate three years ago and never received it back, and since I don't plan on running for office again, I haven't had a need to repurchase it - this is why my review is scant on details. But I do remember that this book was excellent and if I ever did decide to run again, I would immediately add it to my Amazon cart.
Great Book for First Time Candidates and Campaigners.......2005-10-09
I have used this book and its predecessor for numerous local campaigns. It is not written at a theoretical level but is a nuts-and-bolts primer for small campaigns. I have other books on the subject, but this is the one I recommend most highly.
I find that many people who want to run for political office at the local level really have no idea about the mechanics of a campaign. By the time they realize that it is no easy task, they are too far gone or too dejected to turn their campaigns around. This book is an excellent guide for them to read before they start. I like the fact that Judge Grey demands a basic analysis of what it will take to win before a candidate commits himself.
I also think the judge's willingness to make recommendations (i.e. don't run as an independent, his insistence that no campaign is too small for a campaign manager) sets his book apart from others. The title of this book is "How to WIN a Local Election", not how to run one. In fact, he capitalizes the word "WIN" himself. Often times these books are written by political science professors who lose sight of the objective of a political campaign-- to "WIN" !
In short, this is an excellent primer for small local campaigns. Good enough that I buy copies to give to potential candidates before they throw their hat in the ring.
A citizen's primer on your civic duty. .......2005-08-15
This book is full of great practical ideas for planning and running a local campaign. If you know you want to run for office but you've never done it before, and you don't know where to start, this is the book for you. The author breaks it down into pieces and helps you figure out where to target your limited resources. It helps that he's won a few elections. So get going...remember, just voting only gets you a D, to get an A, you've got to run for office yourself.
Concise & informative guide to the basics for success.......2005-07-17
Grey produced a concise, informative and well-written guide to winning a local election. Local elections are won on actions that put the campaign in touch with the voters. This short, easy to read book provides the essentials quickly (I read it in a day) freeing the campaign to get out and work efficiently and effectively.
The criticism that the book is too basic by other reviewers misses the point. With experience as a senior project leader for a major national political polling firm, I still forgot what it takes to manage an entire campaign. The book is not naive in its simplicity, but eloquent at making decisions about what is relevant to convey to get a campaign up quickly and in the right direction.
Was a good overview for its day... dated.......2005-05-10
This is the best of the four books I've recently compared to run a local campaign. Three others, "Winning Local and State Elections" by Beaudry/Schaeffer, "Winning Polical Campaigns," by Bike, and "How to Win an Election," by Huseby are much more dated and significantly flawed. Of these books, this is by far the best, providing a good overview of the things one needs to do in order to run a successful campaign. Others have provided an overview of what you'll find inside and you can sneak a peak online, so I won't provide redundant info here. This book is unique in highlighting areas that may not apply to your particular election and highlighting potential "gotchas" for which you need to be alert, for instance financial reporting requirements for your state.
This book, like the others, falls short in its coverage of technology (online presence for the candidate, email communication, effective use of databases, automated polling maps), and in some cases is bent towards larger elections which have political party affiliation.
All-in-all a decent primer with helpful hints for getting started, but you'll also likely want to invest in something with a bit more depth around areas of particular interest/need for you: targetting, polling, messaging/communication, or advertising.

Book Description
When developers build software, they're able to keep track of all the different versions and all the components they use with software configuration management (SCM) systems. One of the more popular SCM products is Perforce.
Authored by Perforce's own VP of product technology, Practical Perforce is the ideal complement to the existing product manual, focusing less on the 'how" and more on the "why" and "when." The book is not only a helpful introduction to Perforce, it's an enlightening resource for those already familiar with this versatile SCM product. Whether you're a programmer, product manager, or build engineer, you stand to benefit from the many insider tips and ideas presented in this convenient guide.
Practical Perforce is divided into two main parts. Part I offers a whirlwind technical tour, complete with careful descriptions of basic and advanced Perforce commands designed to give you a baseline knowledge. Part II describes the big picture-using Perforce in a collaborative software development. It outlines recommended best practices and quickly shows how to implement them with the Perforce operations introduced in Part I. Throughout the book, you'll learn how to maximize Perforce so it completes tasks like these in the most efficient manner possible:
- Keep track of changes as you conduct concurrent parallel work on files
- Log activity
- Generate reports on who did what when
- Compare, merge and branch files
- Store files and file configurations
- Restore lost bug fixes
Recognizing the pitfalls and practices of an SCM system like Perforce is absolutely essential to producing good software. Now, with Practical Perforce, you have the edge you need to ensure success.

The How of Perforce and the why of SCM.......2007-10-21
As the title suggests, this is a how-to guide for doing Software Configuration Management with Perforce, but there's more. In addition to describing how the various commands work, this book helps you understand how to structure your version control system to help your team be more effective. For example, this book describes not only how to create branches, but why, and what policy to have on the branch. The Channeling the Flow of Change chapter is a great introduction to change management concepts in general, and the "Tofu Scale" is a great metaphor for structuring codelines. In addition, the clear writing style makes somewhat tricky concepts very accessible.
Buy this book if you are using Perforce as your SCM solution, or even if you are evaluating multiple solutions, and Perforce is a candidate, as this book will help you understand how to structure your environment for effective development, regardless of your tool. This is an excellent companion to Software Configuration Management Patterns: Effective Teamwork, Practical Integration for Perforce users.
A wolf in sheep's clothing.......2007-09-03
Well, I'm disappointed. I'm new to Perforce and found Perforce's documentation a bit unwieldy so I thought this book would help. I was wrong. What I was *hoping* this book would do was to provide a tutorial on getting set up and started, then serve as a reference on how to do at least some of the common things that you'd frequently need to do. Unfortunately, the book doesn't help with any of that.
The book isn't organized so as to be useful as a reference, and it doesn't really offer much (if any) help on how to get started. Instead the book spends most of its space on discussions on advanced topics (branching, merging, automated builds, and so forth). It also focuses mainly on the command-line interface rather than the GUI.
I'm sure this book is useful for some, but it sure wasn't what I was looking for.
An excellent buy if you are familiar with the basics.......2007-08-19
If you have used perforce a little bit but are unsure how to make the best of it or learn more effective ways of using some of the more powerful features I recommend this. If you are completely new to perforce I'd recommend getting familiar with the manual first.
Using simple examples the book explains some of the most powerful features of perforce such as branching. It also has some useful tips on procedures and methods that you can adapt and adopt to make collaboration smoother. All in all an excellent buy if you are familiar with the basics of perforce.
The lowdown on Perforce and all dimensions of SCM.......2006-10-13
Perforce is billed as the "quick Software Configuration Management ... written by developers for developers". What I like about this book is that it both suitable for beginners and experienced Perforce users. Even if your are not a Perforce use, I still recommend reading the chapters on source code management (mainlines and software evolution), as they contain some excellent descriptions and universal principles.
VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!.......2006-05-20
Are you a programmer, a project manager, or a build engineer involved with software development? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Laura Wingerd, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that presents Perforce's potential as a software configuration management tool.
Wingerd, begins by describing how Perforce stores files and directories in its repository, the depot. Then, the author surveys the Perforce commands you're most likely to use for basic software development. She continues with a review of the Perforce resolve operation: what it's for, when you do it, and what you do with it. Next, the author discusses the mechanics of branching and integrating. Then she looks at how to use labels and jobs in Perforce. She also focuses on aspects of control and automation, starting with a look at controlling depot and file access, including access to files in other Perforce domains. Then, she takes a step back from Perforce to look at the roadmap of the software life cycle: the mainline model. The author continues by introducing conventions, policies, and techniques for managing codelines in a Perforce system. Next, she looks at the care and feeding of release codelines. Then, the author looks at creating development codelines, working in development codelines, keeping development codelines up to date, and delivering completed development work into parent codelines. Finally, the author looks at using staging streams to manage frequent releases.
This most excellent book will help Perforce users understand why Perforce works the way it does. Most users will come to this level of understanding on their own eventually!
