Compelling and enrolling.......2007-02-28
I completed the book in a few days and I loved it. It is a masterpiece. The story is both compelling and enrolling. The format is unique and extremely helpful as key points are reinforced in multiple forms throughout the book. The authenticity and patience of the authors shines through as the story builds to a crescendo, and a belief that all of us have, or can learn, what is required to make bold moves. A must read for anyone ready to take their life and contribution to the next level.
Book Description
Praise for The New Leader's 100-Day Action Plan
"What a book! New and experienced managers at every level will 'fly' with this programmed learning."
—The Honorable Bruce S. Gelb former vice chairman, Bristol-Myers Squibb
"I love this book and wish I had read it before stepping into my current leadership role. It provides a practical and indispensable road map to success that will help new leaders stack the odds in their favor. Read it and don't be among the forty percent of leaders who fail in the first eighteen months!"
—Sandy Rogers former marketing manager, Procter & Gamble and Apple Computer, and former senior vice president, Corporate Strategy, Enterprise Rent-A-Car Company
"The New Leader's 100-Day Action Plan offers a comprehensive architecture with practical tools and techniques for new leaders to follow. I believe that
leaders who utilize the advice from this book will have demonstrative business and culture-building results."
—Joe Bonito Vice President, Global Leadership Effectiveness, Pfizer
"One of the most basic yet comprehensive books I've read regarding the dos and don'ts of a successful on-boarding process. A must-read for all aspiring business leaders, from first-time CEO's to executives at every level of the organization. Also a great tool for human resources and talent manage-ment executives."
—Joe Griesedieck Vice Chairman, Korn/Ferry Executive Search
Customer Reviews:
A great guide - but be sure to read it BEFORE you start!.......2007-09-25
This is a fantastic book - a very good guide for a manager/executive starting at a new company. Be sure to read it BEFORE you start since some of the actions must be done ahead of your first 100 days. The book includes links to a website with downloadable forms - a nice bonus. Highly recommended and a quick read.
The only complete book for starting a new job as a leader from A-Z.......2007-05-28
We bought this book along with the "The First 90 Days" and read them side by side.
Pro:
-Delves into what questions to ask before the interview through the first several months... I found no other book that is this complete from beginning to end
-Promotes using the time opportunity BEFORE you start a job and in my experience is a major differentiator that I've been able to surprise and delight. Set up pre-meetings, arranging for email/phone and a place to sit, etc. as a chance to listen and learn without the pressure to perform and to begin forming alliances.
-Serves as a handy reference... excellent chapter summaries and a strong executive summary with a timeline and a meaty chapter outline are helpful both now and in the future
-Checklists are excellent and abundant, boiling thoughts down to the most essential elements in a more memorable (less verbose) way
-Checklists include not only job-related tips, but also cover moving-related items as well... handy!
-There are many good tips interspersed throughout the book that are good reminders of the basics you need to adhere to in order to be successful
-Breaks the "sink or swim mindset" often associated with starting a new position
-Excellent use of forms for introspective Q&A; creatively offers forms that can even be downloaded from the internet, a clever and fairly unique offering
Con:
-I think that assessments of what environment you'll be stepping into are underdeveloped and/or understated. You need to know if the team is under performing, just too new, etc.
Bottom line: Highly recommended as a must have text for the aspiring business professional. This book effectively serves as warning, motivation, and how to get results in your new role.
All Performance, Not Hype.......2006-09-29
You won't find this book touted in any web 2.0 blogs, business 2.0 magazines, or pundit 2.0 panel discussions at Demo. It lacks snarky, pithy and/or bloviating commentary. This is an un-hip book that focuses hedgehog-like on your being successful in your new job.
The New Leaders 100-Day Action Plan gives us an insight into an area of our business lives that has not been given enough attention, namely what the authors call, the 'executive on-boarding' experience. Many, many new executives fail in new roles, not because they are incompetent but because they are set up for failure before their arrival.
The invaluable lessons within this book include: 1) your first day begins well before your first day, 2) negotiate after your offer and before your acceptance, 3) know your stakeholders before you start -- get all of these issues ironed out before you accept the job; and many others.
I won't do the standard "Amazon book report review" here, but if you're in a position to transition into a new role, this is a book you really need to read, quickly.
I joined a company many years ago -- hot brand name, great technology, high riding stock price -- only to find out upon arrival that 1) the job I was promised wasn't agreed upon by other stakeholders, 2) that there were others in the company who also had 'my job', and 3) my boss was about to get fired. I left after seven months. Had I spent 15 minutes with this book, I could have unlocked a few of these secrets ahead of time. You live and learn, but you don't always have to learn the hard way.
Save yourself from having to learn the hard way. Highly recommended, quick read.
Think Productive Condensed Wisdom.......2006-09-15
This is an amazing book! Actually, it's a distillation and synthesis of the most relevant content of many books, combined with lots of unique and very valuable insight from the authors, and arranged in a highly useful order.
Key eye-openers are:
*The importance of starting before Day One and how to do it
*The critical success factors of Day One
*The sequence, timelines and guidelines for the critical events in the first 100 days - and how much time you haven't got
Even on established concepts (e.g. establishing shared purpose, building the right team, conducting milestone meetings), this book adds valuable perspective and many effective practices to improve your probability of success.
While the book focuses on the essential steps to succeed in a new job in a new company, it's equally useful for consultants taking on a new assignment or leaders taking on new responsibilities in their current company.
The only downside is the "Ouches" you'll feel when you realize what you did wrong, and what you should have done, in prior experiences that could have gone better.
Highly recommend.......2006-08-22
Even though some examples are arguable and some information is out-of-date (blogging missing as a communication tool) I would recommend this to any new leader...
Book Description
What keeps us going when times get tough? How do we act to create a more humane world, no matter how hard it seems? How do we offer models of involvement for our students when many feel their actions cannot matter? The Impossible Will Take a Little While gathers stories and essays of engagement that range across nations, eras, and political movements. These visionary and eloquent voices include Diane Ackerman, Sherman Alexie, Maya Angelou, Mary Catherine Bateson, Ariel Dorfman, Marian Wright Edelman, Eduardo Galeano, Susan Griffin, Vclav Havel, Seamus Heaney, Tony Kushner, Jonathan Kozol, Bill McKibben, Nelson Mandela, Pablo Neruda, Henri Nouwen, Arundhati Roy, Desmond Tutu, Alice Walker, Cornel West, Terry Tempest Williams, and Howard Zinn. Their voices can help us all keep working for a better world, despite the obstacles. In The Impossible Will Take a Little While, a phrase borrowed from Billie Holliday, the editor of Soul of a Citizen brings together fifty stories and essays that range across nations, eras, wars, and political movements. Danusha Goska, an Indiana activist with a paralyzing physical disability, writes about overcoming political immobilization, drawing on her history with the Peace Corps and Mother Teresa. Vaclav Havel, the former president of the Czech Republic, finds value in seemingly doomed or futile actions taken by oppressed peoples. Rosemarie Freeney Harding recalls the music that sustained the civil rights movement, and Paxus Calta-Star recounts the powerful vignette of an 18-year-old who launched the overthrow of Bulgaria's dictatorship. Many of the essays are new, others classic works that continue to inspire. Together, these writers explore a path of heartfelt community involvement that leads beyond despair to compassion and hope. The voices collected in The Impossible Will Take a Little While will help keep us all working for a better world despite the obstacles.

Revied on The Impossible Will Take a Little While.......2007-02-14
Received on time and in a very well condition. Very Satified.
a much needed balm.......2007-01-17
Good things are possible, keep at it, it will take a while, but, it is not impossible! Even the review here at Amazon by Ms. Nina Rosenberg shows the uphill distance we have to go. Let's all keep walking, and even invite Ms Rosenberg along, maybe offer her a cup of tea. Anyhow, I loved this book and feel that we need to sometimes focus on what is good, and what HAS been accomplished and try to understand how it was acomplished so that we too may pave the way to greater peace, for all. Yes, not just for the USA, but for all citizens of the world. If you liked this book, I suspect you might also enjoy a book on non-violence called "nonviolence: twenty five lessons" by Mark Kurlansky.
Don't give up, keep at it, keep the faith, ward off despair!
very readable.......2007-01-12
This book managed to be easy to read despite the large amount of information within its pages. I found it to be inspiring without being too heavy, and informative without leaving me wracked with guilt and anxiety.
Love, Empathy & Hope.......2006-01-23
This is an inspirational compendium from contributers such as Maya Angelou, Jim Hightower, Jonathan Kozol, Nelson Mandela, Arundhati Roy, Desmond Tutu, and Howard Zinn (to name a few). Since the resurgence of the warfare state when Marvin Bush planted bombs in the Twin Towers, which were blown-up after they were hit by planes and the incident blamed on alleged Arabs (see "The New Pearl Harbor" by David Ray Griffin), we have been living an Orwellian nightmare. Just like before when FDR provoked the Japanese to attack Pearl Harbor to make us Yanks war crazy so we would fight the Nazis in Europe and stop Russia from taking it over, we are demoralized and mired in social crisis. Hence, this compilation by editor Paul Loeb is salve to the wounded soul.
Nelson Mandela's contribution is "The Dark Years" when the South African white-led apartheid government incarcerated him and other political prisoners on Robben Island. The inmates organized and maintained their own inmate-led micro-society behind bars, which empowered them and sustained their souls.
Desmond Tutu wrote that people of faith are prisoners of hope. He said that the South African experience was God's beacon of hope, not just to the third world, but Northern Ireland as well.
Howard Zinn's contribution is "The Optimism of Uncertainty". He said "There will always be something to fear in life, but this should not prevent you from living your life, thinking independently, and speaking your mind".
Maya Angelou shared a poem titled "Still I Rise": "Just like moons and like suns, With the certainty of the tides, Just like hopes springing high, Still I rise."
This book is an inspiration to all in peace work.
Hope from start to finish..........2005-12-06
This book is tangible hope in a dark and murky time. The insights gathered in these pages offer a historical bird's eye view of what it means to fight for what is right, no matter the cost. The cross section of stories from around the world unifies disparate groups in a way that is needed on all levels of society today. The book came to me as a gift from a friend, and in the spirit of "Pay It Forward" I made sure that at least 3 other friends got to share in the hope that I enjoyed while reading Paul's work. The stories have further galvanized my personal and politcal beliefs and sent me in some very positive directions working for peace. What started as another casual read quickly became a manual for hope. I reccomend this to all who feel hopeless in light of current events.

Best Dating Book for Men Available.......2005-01-11
I have read a lot of books on this subject and Take Action is by far the best. It made me understand how important it is to understand the woman's point of view. The chapter with sample dialogues was really good. Overall, it really motivated me to get out there and try to meet girls, instead of just thinking about it.
Very Helpful.......2005-01-08
This book was very good at helping me to focus on the basics of meeting women. No silly theories or women bashing, just the ABC's of going from seeing a good-looking girl to approaching her and getting her number. I especially liked the section on the survey of women. I'd recommend it to any guy who would like to meet a lot more women.
Duh.......2005-01-08
I can't believe that I read this book. I'm single again, after a five year relationship and felt out of "game shape". I thought that I needed to rethink strategies for meeting women(other than bar flys). But what I actually found out suprised me. This book is about absolutely nothing- exactly 2 hours of nothing. All it says is that in order to meet women, you'll have to approach woman- DUH! That's it- honestly!
I actually feel ripped off for buying this book and am searching for my reciept and the Amazon.com return policy.
Would you believe that I think that I'm actually dumber for reading this book! Guys...don't waste your money or two hours of your time believing that this will be entertaining reading (it's not).
Great Book!.......2004-09-09
Take Action! provides a sound step-by-step plan to overcome the obstacles that prevent us from having the social life we desire. I read it last month and it has motivated me to get back out into the dating world. I needed a little extra push and this book was right on the money. I highly reccomend it to anyone who wants to jump start their social life.

Customer Reviews:
A Cute Story & Illustrations for Children Ages 3 - 6.......2007-04-21
Curious George, Margret & H. A. Rey's loveable monkey (Technically he's a Chimpanzee but we won't quibble too much . . . .) has received a series of new stories but in the same structure and style of the original. In these stories, George is a good monkey who tries to be helpful but allows his curiosity to cause problems. In the end however, George saves the day and all is forgiven. In this story, George, along with the Man in the Yellow Hat, is going on a train trip, causes problems in the station and then prevents a small boy from falling on the tracks. In the end, George and his new friend the small boy receive a ride in the locomotive. (I hope they brought earplugs.)
My mother taught me to read with Curious George and the Man with the Yellow Hat more than 30 years ago and it is good to see new stories for the cheeky little fellow. This story does not have quite the touch of the original but is very close. A good story with a good lesson and highly recommended.
Not as Good as the Other George Stories.......2006-07-20
My son LOVES trains, and he also loved the Curious George movie. He has several of the books based on the Rey's style, and the PS2 Curious George game.
Curious George Takes a Train is the first George book I've bought "sight unseen" (from Amazon.com). However, since my son loves both trains and George, I felt it was a great fit.
Granted, my son seems to like the book. Out of the four books illustrated/written in the Rey tradition, my son owns three by Martha Weston. The other--Curious George Goes to a Chocolate Factory--is illustrated by Vipah Interactive.
Weston is heavy on the black charcoal as it is (as seen in the shadowing of books like Curious George Visits a Toy Store), but she is *especially* heavy with the black illustrations in Curious George Takes a Train. In fact, it often looks as if a child has taken a black crayon and (no lie) colored vertical streaks of black right on top of the people!
It's very unattractive, in my opinion, but kids don't seem to notice these types of things. I also felt that the story was a bit harrowing for a George tale (a little boy runs from his father after a toy train, the gate closes behind him, and the boy almost goes out in front of the tracks--but George saves his life.)
The story is a bit quick...it goes from the Man with the Yellow Hat strolling off with Mrs. Needleman in the station to George climbing up and messing with the numbers and letters on the train schedule--and then off to saving the boy!
If your child is a train enthusiast who likes George, he/she will likely enjoy this book. However, as far as stories go--and illustrations--there are better books in this series, in my opinion.
Another take on George.......2004-11-05
Refusing to believe that love equals control or perhaps distracted by his companion Mrs. Needleman, the man with the yellow hat once again disappears as George wanders unsupervised. This time, in a train station mired in mid-century stasis, George rearranges the trainmaster's board in a misguided attempt to help. In the end, George discovers that what it takes to be forgiven is good intentions and the quick wits to save someone's life. Unlike Vipah Interactive's spanking clean take on George, Martha Weston's looser, darker illustrations harken back to the original's feeling of big city grit.

Slide outs are great.......2007-09-11
This was one of the very first books that my 15 month old took a real interest in. He loves to slide the "photos" in and out and is beginning to get the "clicking" down now.
interactive.......2007-08-17
We rarely read this book. It is a little boring. My son just likes to pretend its a camera & "click" it.
Wonderful travel book/toy!.......2007-07-27
My two-year-old daughter is in love with Diego and this helps keep her occupied in the car. Love it!
Cute idea for a book.......2007-03-08
We ordered this book for my son's 2nd birthday. I love to take pictures, so he loves the book. The words in the book are a little boring, so we make up our own words, and just click lots of pictures. The red 'clicker' is the best thing about the book!
cute book.......2007-02-14
Bought this for my nearly 4 year old who loves to watch Go Diego Go. He loves this book! We read it together every night. My only complaint would be that it is too short -- still, a great book for any Diego fan!

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful, well-imagined picturebook series.......2007-09-13
I really love the "Ella" series... The books are nice and sweet, and presents a marvelously imagined, self-contained world that will strongly appeal to little kids. It has a similar feel to the "Curious George" and "Babar" books, except without all the weird, disturbing undertones that make those classics a bit troublesome. A great choice for some fun books that you don't have to worry about. (ReadThatAgain)
toddlers love this series.......2007-03-09
My daughter loves this book, and I like reading it too. It's about an elephant who is very eager to help her Mother by helping arond her bakery. Ella is such an earnest and sweet elephant. The plot is simple yet has enough twists and drama to make it memorable. The illustrations are captivating.

Would you recommend this book? Why or Why not?
We would recommend the book. Our 2 year old sat still for the entire reading of this story!
A Very Enjoyable Read.......2005-09-01
I bought this for my daughter who loved the first book in this series, "Ella the Elegant Elephant". Here, Ella longs to feel helpful while assisting her mother in their bakery. She embarks on a slap-dash cake delivery to prove herself adept, a journey that could spell trouble if Ella doesn't take it upon herself to finish up what she's started. In spite of the obstacles that ensue, she displays a tenacious handle on things. The message of striving for personal responsiblity doesn't come off as heavy handed, cloaked in slap-sticky scenes that are whimsical and funny, and finished off with a nice, quiet end that brings the tale full circle. The story is rich and the illustrations strikingly detailed. We are really enjoying this book.

Just the right balance.......2004-11-26
This book by David Shapiro strikes just the right balance between being two technical and too vague about how to plan for retirement. David hits you right between the eyes with the realities that face those who procrastinate in taking retirement planning seriously. However, the planning process that he outlines and the encouragement that he gives makes you confident that it's never too late to start...but START! It's just a great book that I plan on giving each of my children for Christmas.
I was amazed at how un-prepared i was for retirement.......2004-09-06
I am 45 years old and after seeing the amazing david shapiro on your world with cavalto I relized how much trouble I was in. So as soon as I could I went to my local bookstore and bought myself a copy. By now I have probly read it 5 times and each time I find a new way to prepare myself. I was listening to my accountant and I feel that this book has prepared me for retirement so good that I might even be able to retire ealier than my accountant had said. After reading this book I fired my accountant and am saving money quicker than ever and at this rate making 150,000 a year I can retire by age 55. I would definately highly recommend this book.
you must buy this retirement book.......2004-07-13
This book is a must-have for all people who want to retire comfortably and in style. The author is funny (very witty) and makes the process of understanding retirement easy, even for the average layperson. It's a keeper.

Great Mix.......2007-08-29
This book is a great mix of the wonderful authors ability. One of those books that simply cannot be put down
Excellent read!!!.......2006-01-07
This is an excellent read and I could recommend it to anyone, the stories are good and very well written.
4 romances in the same book I had to get it and haven't regretted it for a moment. I never seem to be able to get enough books to read and therefore books I don't really like, I soon get to really hate. This was not one of those books.
I suggest you buy this too.
Awful.......2005-09-17
San Francisco: 4 Romances Blossom by the City by the Bay is a compilation of four short stories: Grace in Action, Landlord Takes a Bride, Meet My Sister Tess, and Unbreakable Hope. The stories were written from 1999 to 2003, and all of them are very Christian in theme and writing. The first story, Grace in Action, is about a fireman and a very poor woman and her child. The fireman befriends the woman and begins to date her, much to the sadness of his girlfriend Emily. In fact, Emily shows up in the last story, Unbreakable Hope. The first and last stories are a slight continuation of one another and have characters that overlap. The best story, in my opinion, was The Landlord takes a Bride - both the male and female characters were strongly written, and the emphasis on church, God, and Christianity was less intense. The weakest story was Meet My Sister, Tess; it is about an adult female taking care of her disabled adult brother, and not being able to function independently of a man. Because Tess is so poor and her brother is disabled, the references to God were all over the place - it was actually very tedious to read through and I was just wanting it to end. This writer is not particularly good; the stories are about 50-75 pages each but are not intense enough to grab your attention and make you want to continue reading. The setting of San Francisco played a very minor role in the book, and the cover gives the impression that the stories will pay tribute to the city. They didn't; the author mentioned very few places in the city and it wasn't exploited at all. It's a shame, because perhaps the book would have been better with more focus on the setting and less on God and Christianity. I would definitely skip this book.

Useful and practical.......2005-08-09
I found this book to be a useful, practical "insider's guide", written by someone who clearly knows what they are talking about. It filled in some gaps in my knowledge, even though I live and operate within the political system in Australia (much of the book focuses on the American political system). It was not difficult to extract information and apply it to my own setting, and has really opened up a whole swag of ideas for me. It is well-written, succinct, and does not beat around the bush. A thoroughly enjoyable book.
Great if your issue isn't the system itself.......2005-06-26
For those of us who see the system as the problem being asked to cajole our elected candidates to our point of view seems useless to say the least, for instance how do you get a corrupt official consider reform, etc. Living in a state dominated by one party or the other tends to make these methods a bit moot, however if your issue(s) are simpler and offer the candidate less to lose, say getting funding for MS this book is immensely helpful.
Awe-Inspiring.......2004-06-09
This book was simply inspiring and a definite pleasure to read. I was granted the pleasure of attending a session that was facilitated by Mr. Kush, and reading his book is just like listening to his powerful words again; the book is really that great! The One-Hour Activist has content anyone can enjoy, whether you're a newcomer to grassroots activism or a longtime activist. I learned very much from this book and it kept me reading from front to back- Kush writes the book in such a way as if he were speaking to you. After reading The One-Hour Activist, I felt motivated and compelled to take this book's advice in action. Go out now and buy this book!
Democracy doesn't end with voting!.......2004-05-24
So many people think that all they can do is vote and then write angry letters or blogs after their candidates fail to perform as promised. This book is, first and foremost, about keeping the pressure on. Making legislators aware of your issues, aware of your story and aware that you aren't going away. There are so many avenues of communication available between constituents and legislators and so few get used (and, no, the email petition isn't one of them). This book will tell you how to get your voice heard!
Learning.......2004-05-14
