Customer Reviews:
A Home Run!.......2007-10-22
I've read a lot of Zig's work over the years and have listened to his tapes/CD's as well. His message rings as true today as it did when I first heard him in 1992. However, there is at least one big positive change that I found in this book. Zig is sharing a deeper message with the perspective that reminds me of my Grandfater. His core message is the same but it is enhanced by the wisdom found in an 80 year old - he wants to share that wisdom with you! I'm reading it again!!
Great book by a great man.......2007-10-13
What else can you say-it's Zig! A must for anyone who wants to improve her/his life AND feel good about her/his self!
GREAT ADVICE.......2007-09-12
This is an awesome book and has great advice about everyday life as well as some very personal motivation also. I would recommend it to teens as well as any age adult. Zig never disappoints me.
To those who are put off by Ziglar's religious tone to this book., even he states..........2007-05-08
To those who are put off by Ziglar's religious tone to this book in their reviews, even Ziglar states that he knows some people might be put off by it, and 20+ years ago he was not a real believer in God or anything else. He just wanted to make money. He states the change came over time.
I am not Christian, but I am spiritual. Yet I was not offended or bothered by his religious overtones. After all, he is just stating openly what he calls the passion to his success. How his life and the lessons in his life changed when he did take God into his heart and follow God's path. I feel no reason for me to be closed minded to his writing as I truly respect the man and the good he has done. Maybe, just maybe I can be even more open minded to see if his path can also be my path.
I think an important point in the book for me was when he stated all the big important people that helped to form this country (Washington, Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson...) and how these people and our country were built on religious standards and helped to create these great people. But as education is taught less and less from religious and moral influence (for 200 years the alphabet was taught with each letter referencing a biblical verse and moral standard) the country has produced less and less great leaders that compare to our founding fathers. So maybe Zig has a point about incorporating a better than good life with some religious/spiritual overtones.
Finally something that really stands out for me is realizing how I and so many others who are famous (no, I am not famous) would probably change their actions if they started looking at how they are moral role-models to so many young kids and they are helping to shape the future due to their actions. I know for me I am beginning to rethink what I do and how I do it and how I might be able to help shape the future leaders with my calling.
Well, just my two cents.
Great stuff for learning how self-talk can change you outlook.......2007-03-20
Great book by one of the leaders in motivation. The book has many old ideas for his previous work but it also has some great new ideas, A good addition to your collection if your a fan or if you want to start one.
Book Description
Building on her successful series of small books about big ideas (Choosing Happiness, Things I Want My Daughters to Know, Time Alive), Alexandra Stoddard's new book focuses on taking charge of your life––your way. In brief essays filled with the optimism, ideas, and examples her readers love, she shares 50 choices you can make to live joyfully in pursuit of what is true, good and beautiful. Her essays remind us to trust ourselves (Information Is Not Inspiration), to stay steady in a storm (Your Choices Count Most in a Crisis), to take risks (Leave the Safe Harbor), to finish unfinished business (Have As Few Regrets as Possible), to surround ourselves with delights (Redefine What Is Beautiful), and to have fun (Cheap Thrills Are Thrilling) This will be Alexandra's 25th book, with publication timed to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the publication of her classic book on inspired lifestyle Living a Beautiful Life.
Customer Reviews:
It's All About Her.......2007-07-31
I ordered this book looking for inspiration during a down time. I didn't find it. Stoddard does nothing but quote Western philosophers and brag about her own experiences living the good life. The book is, literally, all about her. We hear about her trips to various resorts, how she and her husband (an attorney)treat themselves to a hedonistic dessert every day, and about her design business. We hear about what type finial one customer requested and about the maple bed another client fussed over. I have no idea what any of the Aristotle quotes, Barbados trips, ice creams, or design customers have to do with me learning to live the good life, but Stoddard spends the entire book sprinkling mindless rhetoric with these unremarkable bits of news.
If you want to help yourself live the good life, save a few bucks by avoiding this book.
A dose of healthy inspiration!.......2007-07-04
I believe it is so beneficial to read something inspirational every day, and especially before bedtime. This is a great book for inspirational reading.
Alexandra encourages you to "read these fifty essays in any order you choose-just dive in and muse." -from the book
I first thought that's just what I'd do, -being one who doesn't do well with rules and the 'proper' way of doing things. I love books of essays because you get to skip around and read just what you want, when you want. Well, after I read the introduction, which is actually labeled: "An Invitation", I thought I'd go ahead and read a few pages in and then look around in different places in the book and read whatever looked appealing to me. Well, I guess I got sucked into reading it in chronological order because the 'invitation' was so non-demanding that I couldn't help but keep reading it in order!
Once again, as happens so often with me, the right book at the precise time I needed it. Sometimes it's almost scary how that seems to work out. I recently (the same day I got this book!)was faced with making a decision about something that was pretty important to me. I was struggling with how to pick the right one, because isn't that what we all really want when faced with big decisions -To choose the right one? The second chapter is "Be True to All Your Choices" I LOVED that one as it made me feel confident and reassured in the decision I had made. Then, I just kept reading and trying to absorb all the healthy inspiration I just came across.
The nice thing is that you can dive in anywhere in the book and get a lot of great advice no matter what you're reading about. The chapters (essays) are only a couple of pages each. The point is made in a pleasant short and sweet style. There are quotes and references from many inspiring philosophical sources throughout the book.
I very much enjoyed this book and highly recommend it! Really great gift idea!
You are your choices.......2007-05-30
I enjoy Alexandra Stoddards books. This book was also very good. You can pick it up and read a small section at a time which is very nice if you are busy. Its just a short pick me up to get the day going on a positive note.
My favorite author..........2007-03-15
I have every one of Alexandra's books and just got this one and I am loving it....I look forward to all her new books and get some new inspiration from every one. Love all her grace note and tips throughout and all the quotes.I treasure every one of her books and keep them all seperate in a special place.
uplifting read.......2007-02-22
I loved this book.It is about making the most of your life through every day choices and seeing beauty in the simple things. I know most people could benefit from reading this!
Customer Reviews:
Great Stuff.......2007-10-01
This book is fantastic!! It really get into the details so you clearly understand the path of where things come from. It's enlightening and well worth the money. While educational in nature it is also very interesting. You can't help running around the house looking for someone to tell them what you just read.
Great Stuff.......2007-05-16
Stuff is a terrific exploration of the lifecyle of products and services that we pay for as consumers. This book feeds us info, but more importantly, shows us how to be more aware of what we consume and why. Great exercise for anyone interested in learning or teaching about our environment, (which should be everyone!)
Book and HTML versions are very different.......2007-01-03
I bought the "HTML edition" thinking that I'd save a tree and burn pixels instead. But the HTML is not the book; it is a very short essay. If you're expecting the same content as what's on paper, be warned.
Excellent information! An Easy & Fun Read!.......2006-07-31
Ryan and Durnings book contains excellent information about products we use everyday, and how our choices matter. After reading the first section tracing the history of coffee, I was prompted to go to my health food store and purchase "shade coffee" (organic or cooperatively produced).
I especially liked the sections at the end of each chapter on "What to Do?" with their helpful recommendations. I'm a social psychologist and author of "Quotes, Questions & Actions for Global Understanding". I highly recommend Ryan and Durning's book to all who want to easily make better choices in their day-to-day activities.
Serious but fun read.......2006-02-08
This is one fun and informative book and one I am buying for young as well as older friends. I sit here typing on a computer keyboard and because of the book I see things I never really stopped to see before. And with this comes questions and answers about how many people and natural resources does it take to make all the elements of this modern marvel. Not just the keyboard, monitor and speakers, but the people behind Amazon.com who are consuming coffee, flushing toilets, using lights and machines to process my order.
This is what the book is all about. Becoming quiet and looking around at everything we touch and consume and looking at the bigger picture and 'seeing' all the hands, and natural resources it has taken to produce the coffee we drink, water we drink, car we drive, magazines we read, lights we use, clothes we wear, and the list goes on.
At the end of each chapter, rather than leave the reader feeling like a glutton and bad, the authors have suggested better choices or alternative. Like writing about the average T-shirt and what it takes to make one to what it takes to care for one the authors suggest that one wash only full loads and don't wash after every use but when the item is actually dirty. T-shirts in summer cool the body better which means less AC use, and in winter extra layers of clothing means less heating costs.
Anyway, the book is one that even when I re-read it I discover something new that I hadn't read before. Will check out their other books as well.
Book Description
Now in its 7th printing - inludes more gangsters!

More detailed information about the alleged plot to assassinate Adolph Hitler!
While doing research for this book, Prof. Robert Rockaway interviewed old-time Jewish mobsters and their families. He never knew what his subjects would say or do, so he came prepared for any eventuality.
Customer Reviews:
You Don't Have to be Jewish to Like this Book.......2007-10-21
Robert Rockaway provides an engaging portrait of the warm, loving relationships many of the most notorious Jewish mobsters in the history of U.S. crime enjoyed with their girl friends, wives, children, and other family members, especially mothers. The emotions the wicked ways of these boys provoked from their loved ones ranged from devastation and shame to pride, arrogance, and defensiveness. While a lot of this material is old hat, an equal amount is not, and I generally found this book to be light and enjoyable.
Entertaining and inaccurate.......2006-05-16
A good book for casual crime readers who don't need heavy details, but amazingly inaccurate in several areas. Seems to repeat old myths told in other books rather than do research.
ie Joe the Boss's hit team did not include Anastasia, Adonis or even Siegel
or
Dutch Schultz was not shot in the bathroom or even shot by Charlie Workman. The caliber of the bullet found in Dutch matched those used by his men, not those who had shot his men down. The more accurate tale is that he was mistaken;y shot by his own men while trading fire with Lepke's boys. (The bathroom was directly behind the doorway where Workman had to be shooting from)
Will buy again........2005-09-17
Prompt delivery of my order. Would recommend this seller. Book as advertised.
great book and a fun reading.......2004-02-09
this book is a great academic book mixed with fun storytelling.
Jewish criminals objectively presented by a Jew.......2003-08-26
The book is a reasonably objective record of the fact that even though the word "mafia" is Italian, not all gangsters were (or are) Italian (and thus Catholic)... many were Jews or WASPs for that matter. US Gangsterism was (and is) a USA product, partly because of the ethnic heterogeneity produced by immigration and to a great extent by prohibition. There is of course gangsterism in other countries but backgrounds differ.
The author catalogued the major Jewish gangsters, their family history, their social setting and their "activities". Being Jewish myself I was glad to discover: a) unlike Italian gangsters the Jewish ones tended to keep their families out of their "business", and b) Jewish economic emancipation after WW II practically eliminated Jews from the "business". An enlightening read though rather dry in the first half of the book.

Product Description
The author applies a no-nonsense approach to dieting, exercising, disease treating, and other aspects of everyday life. Our looks, longevity, as well as our physical and mental conditions result from the way we eat, breathe, and take care of all our physical and psychological needs. The question is not limited to nutrition only, as is the case of dieting programs.

Rare find .......2007-09-06
I will certainly keep this book handy and use it frequently treating myself and my family. It's a book I've been waiting for a long time to read. Priceless information. Simple. Easy to follow. And the best thing of all, it costs you almost nothing! As one of the readers noted, this book can possibly make dieting industry die out, and many pharmaceutical companies with raised by them doctors would be out of business, if only people allowed themselves be wise enough to use very simple advice from this book. My mother, who is RN, almost never turned to prescription medications to treat my illnesses, on the contrary, many of her treatments were from holistic medicine, and some of them I find in this book. Wonderful book, amazing, wise! Yes, I can't agree with part on reading character by eye colour and horoscope, but let it be a fun reading and not a scientific statement. Beside that, this book is extremely valuable.
Logic,...Logic,....Logic.......2007-09-01
If you are proactive in maintaining your health this book is absolutley for you along with Cure the Incurable. If you are not proactive I would not suggest this book for you
Who wants to live 150 years???....not me, but, that is not the point. The point is to show us how our body functions and the common sense principles to our health...its call biology, plain and simple
My daughter has been going to various doctors for IBS, bloating, pre-diabetic issues, headaches, irritabilty, etc.
I do understand that our body is one biological system and that it all works together, but, many people do not believe that, especially my daughter
Well, needless to say, I gave this book to her to read and understand....
and finally a light bulb went on
She found out that she had human parasites (almost all of us have them) which no doctor that she went to checked on that
When you read this book, you should leave with a concept of how the body works and what it needs...
Read it as it might not only help you but someone close to you
Simple, Sensible and Extremely Effective.......2007-06-02
This is the ultimate holistic living guide. From correct breathing, through taking care of your back, to proper food combination, the author provides natural recipes for everyday living. The words are direct, awakening and motivating, causing you to start taking care of yourself.
Very important for me was chapter six - Complete Body Cleansing. The liver cleansing is really very rejuvenating. You have to prepare for the procedure a few days earlier by appropriately changing your diet. The liver cleansing itself takes two full days of total concentration on your own body. It is not pleasant but it is very rewarding. After it was over I felt like a newborn. Somehow it also pushed me to improve my eating habits.
Also very good is the chapter about obesity. Without complicating the matter, like many other authors tend to do, the author very effectively deals with the subject in one short chapter. He explains the reasons behind ineffectiveness of most popular dieting programs and suggests simple ways for dealing with the most common habits that lead us to gaining weight. PAINLESS AND EFFECTIVE!
Very helpful is also the chart on proper food combination. Applying the simple rules from the chart after my liver cleansing keeps me feel youthful and energetic, and I keep losing weight week after week.
No one before has motivated me so well. Just follow the simple advice for a month or two and you will see the difference. You will feel better and you will look better. What else do you need?
Another great book that I highly recommend for all those wanting to live healthy life and stay away from prescription drugs is Prescription for Nutritional Healing.
Sometimes you just have to laugh.......2007-04-08
How the author manages to delete all the negative reviews so quickly month after month is quite impressive. I remember writing a negative review a couple of years ago. Actually I wrote two and both disappeared. Now I return and the same battle is waging. For info on this guy check out the discussion section below.
Your health and wellbeing are in your own hands.......2007-02-10
I am usually very skeptical about various claims that can be found in the books written by many "self-healers" and other gurus. The author however, does not over-promise in any chapter of his book, in spite of its catchy title.
It is a good compilation of safe-and-sound recommendations for longevity and healthy living. I did smile at some of them (walking bare footed, etc.) but even if I do not believe in their direct benefits, they might still bring about good results for those who do believe (placebo effect). In any case, none of the recommendations can in any way be harmful as most of the remedies contain products used by many of us on a daily basis.
Other advice, like proper food combination, periodic fasting, taking hot and cold baths, using sauna, drinking pure mineral water, taking daily walks, etc, are just common sense and indeed very beneficial for our mental and physical conditions. By the way, the author clearly states that he is not a medical doctor himself but that he just compiled the wisdom of many nations - from Europe, via Tibet, to old China. As a result, some of the ingredients suggested in certain remedies can be difficult to obtain in North America. For example kefir. It is a dairy product, with well known health benefits, that is very popular in Europe but hardly ever obtainable in the US, except for specialty organic food shops. [...]
There are a few Apendices at the end of the book. Some of them are too much on the side of "New Age" and does not really fit my analitical mind. However it might be of some interest for those who like to believe in astrology, Horoscope etc. I think it is fine to read it as an interesting trivia, especially since this is presented in the Apendices -- clearly outside of the main body of the book.
The author was educated as a biologist and chemist, but he devoted his life to studying human body and he is a well known authority on healthy living documented by the fact the he was the head of Center of Health Sciences in Moscow. I do believe that this book will be very beneficial for many people, especially for those jumping from one fad diet to another. As the author rightly pointed out - your health and wellbeing are in your own hands.
Many methods and remedies suggested by the author are indeed valuable and effective. They are presented for the reader to explore. Please use them wisely! On the scale of 0 to 10 I give the book 9 points. Highly recommended reading!

You've got to hand it to the renowned celebrity psychic Sylvia Browne--she gives it straight from the gut and really doesn't give a hoot whether you believe her. As a result, it's hard to not be captivated and convinced by her firm belief in the afterlife, or in this case, the beforelife. Her writing is most riveting when she uses her storytelling voice, relating dialogue from client sessions that include past-life stories. In fact, she opens the book with a scene in which she follows the small clues offered by an agoraphobic to help him reveal that a past-life poisoning (when he was an Aztec ruler) had been crippling his present life. Throughout the book, Brown continues to use real-life client stories to show how past-life baggage can weigh down a present life. The final chapters offer how-to lessons on conducting your own past-life regression and healing sessions. Be warned: Browne's writing sometimes sounds like the channeled writing that was popular in the late 1980's: "The miraculous gift of eternity means that the singular essence that is you will always, always exist." But readers may forgive her these lapses, as she clearly writes from heartfelt convictions rather than a stylized formula. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
The one expert millions of readers have learned to trust, one of the few psychics instantly recognizable to television viewers, Sylvia Browne is back. She has proven herself, in her fifty years of working as a medium, to be the reigning queen of psychic phenomena. Here is an insightful look at how much of one's present life is informed by one's past lives, and how many health and relationship problems have their roots in unresolved past lives. From unexplained illnesses to bizarre phobias, from irrational anxieties and fears to the choice of partners, each can be traced back to past lives. Even birthmarks and recurring dreams are signs of issues from past lives. Sylvia helps readers recognize where their deep-rooted problems, fears, and hang-ups all began-and how to ultimately resolve them.

Sylvia Browne.......2007-08-28
This was a great book. I have an 11 month old, so it was great being able to stop whenever I needed to. The stories were very interesting and I even started saying to my daughter everytime she fell asleep to release any negetive energy from past lives into the white light of the holy spirit. I highly recomend this book.
Just love her!.......2007-07-19
Sylvia has once again published another helpful book. Rather than this book being alot of psychic talk, we have another "theme" going on here, which is "Tolerance". We are surrounded by so many different types of people who have many different themes in life. She goes in depth about the life purpose of these people, including yourself, and show us that we are all on a seperate journey to fullfill our themes. We are here for each other, and we were all ment to be around the people that we have, wether we like it or not. We are here for a specific reason, even the irritating ones... have some patience they are here to help too.
interesting.......2007-03-27
As with all of Sylvia's books that I have read so far it kept me interested, opened my mind and made me ask questions. I feel that if anything I read makes me think then it must be good. I have made so many positive changes in my life and have found a peace I never knew existed since being touched by the works of Sylvia that it would be impossible to not see or to accept this fact.
Excellent & Informative.......2007-02-12
I have enjoyed all of the books by Sylvia that I have read. This one in particular is not only fascinating but VERY helpful. All of us (because all of us have problems) should read it.
REINCARNATION?? THIS WILL MAKE A BELIEVER OUT OF YOU..........2006-09-10
If you ever wondered about reincarnation, this book may make a believer out of you.
This book explores Sylvia's experiences as a degreed hypnotherapist who has come across many supposedly "unsolvable" cases where past life regression revealed the link to some of the baffling ills suffered by clients in this lifetime. There are many fascinating case studies, that have later been back researched and verified by historical census records and other historical public records.
Book Description
Have you ever fantasized about taking time away from your overworked life? Nights uninterrupted by email? Days to pursue set-aside dreams? Do you promise yourself that “someday” you will get a break?
Mary Lou Quinlan had those “someday” thoughts. But her hard-earned job as CEO of a New York advertising agency claimed most of her waking hours. Exhausted and losing motivation, she was so desperate she perversely imagined breaking her leg to get some time alone. Then, she declared a brief timeout. During her time off, she slept late, took walks, danced the salsa, kept a journal and ultimately, uncovered the roots of a new business. In the process, she rediscovered herself.
Time Off for Good Behavior is the result of listening to women like her, who realized enough was enough. Quinlan tells the stories of dozens of women who sacrificed their health, relationships, their good humor and a good night’s sleep until they found the courage to ask themselves if they were happy with the life they were living and made the decisions to take a life-saving break.
Mary Lou Quinlan explores the factors that compel you to work so hard and examines how to take back control of your life. She explores our unwillingness to give ourselves permission to rest so that we can re-imagine our futures. And she shows the powerful, self-fulfilling changes that can occur when we do decide to take that rest.
Whether you contemplate leaving a career that took years to build or just need a long vacation to assess what you want next, you’ll find practical tools and bolstering advice throughout. Each chapter ends with provocative questions to help you plan your good behavior reprieve. Specific exercises on financial planning, advice for negotiating time off, and tools to uncover your passions make this a must-read for women who are ready for “someday.”
Time off for Good Behavior ultimately shows that stepping away from everything—even for a short while—often means ending up with so much more.
Customer Reviews:
Mary Lou Quinlan Is a Dynamo.......2005-04-19
As a man, I got a lot out of reading Time Off for Good Behavior. Mary Lou showed me how I can get more out of life and work by being smarter, better AND by taking it easy occasionally. I could relate to many of her experiences and I felt I learned from how she coped. Anyone, male or female who wants to have a rich professional and personal life will gain by reading Mary Lou's insights.
A Validating Must-Read!.......2005-03-23
Mary Lou Quinlan really knows what she's talking about. As a thirtysomething single woman, reading "Time Off for Good Behavior" was extremely validating. Her own story and the stories of other women captured in this book are truly rivoting, and made me realize I am not alone. Amazing that the book summarizes how I've felt all of my working life(and even before then). A serious page-turner; you feel like you're having an initimate chat, rather than reading non-fiction.
A Potentially Life Changing Book.......2005-02-28
If you are a hard-charging, hard-working professional woman who takes her laptop to the beach, you will recognize yourself in Time Off for Good Behavior. I could identify with many of the Type A "good girl" women Quinlan describes. She's right on target. She makes you think about your daily life in a whole new way. And, afterall, this is first step in making a change.
Sometimes we need know it's o.k. to cry "uncle.".......2005-02-18
As I was reading this book, I felt like I had met my soul mate. I, too, am a Type-A "good girl." ("You need this report by Friday, would Thursday be better?") Fortunately for me, I was forced into a sabbatical before I really knew that I needed one (and then, of course, spent the next two years struggling with the fact that I had my entire identity wrapped up in my job/career, that only now am I beginning to enjoy life). I was floored when Mary Lou wrote about being so tired that incurring enough injuries to require a stay in the hospital (without being life-threatening) seemed an attractive way to take a break from the craziness. That thought had crossed my mind more times than I would like to admit. If you're thinking about taking time off, or are so tired that you can't even think, then you might want to pick this book up. Even if you can't financially swing a sabbatical, it's helpful to understand that you are not alone in feeling overwhelmed with your life.
Balancing Act .......2005-02-16
I recently read Mary Lou Quinlan's book and enjoyed it because at times, Women Can't Do It All! Being a mother, a spouse, taking care of the house and managing a career doesn't always provide women with the time to take a break and consider what we want for ourselves. This Sunday's NYTimes (business section) interview with Mary Lou Quinlan made me realize that this is a much bigger issue.
We need to slow down, take charge of our lives and start
LIVING, rather than racing.
Book Description
It’s fairly obvious that one can’t be a ‘perfect’ environmentalist. But that’s okay. Perfection isn’t the goal. A good life is. And a good life has as much to do with your intent as with the end result.” —from the Introduction
The Newman’s Own Organics Guide to a Good Life is the essential book for those of us who can’t live in an organic hemp tepee but do care about our quality of life, global warming, clean water, and disappearing resources.
Nell Newman shows you how to do what is within easy reach. Along with realistic, practical advice, she shows how and why living a more environmentally conscious life benefits you and your immediate surroundings. In addition to recycling and reusing, the book covers consumer-related steps such as
• how buying and eating organic food supports small farms (and tastes better, too)
• how you can buy clean power through your regular power company
• which long-distance telephone companies offer competitive pricing and service while returning a portion of their profits to environmental and educational organizations
• where to buy everything—from pots and pans to pet food—so that you can “vote with your dollar” and feel good about your purchases
Packed with profiles of fascinating—and sometimes zany—people and a heavy dose of sanity, this book is organized according to the way you really live, making it easy to identify what areas of change are viable for you. A resource directory of publications, retailers, groups, and associations is included in the back of the book.
Customer Reviews:
Helpful.......2007-07-11
This is a great practical book. It's written by Nell Newman (Paul Newman's daughter) and discusses briefly her company Newman's Own. She then spends the majority of the book sharing practical tips that she's found helpful in living a more Earth-friendly life. It was an easy read and felt more like I was listening to my aunt or grandma tell me a story. And it was great because she balanced it out. Not making things so black and white. Realizing that even being environmentally friendly still causes harm to the environment. It's less about being an extremist and more about making informed, practical decisions without being a moralist with it. Which was quite refreshing to hear. It made me want to give their food another try after my disastrous results with their salsa and popcorn.
Less hokey than the cover implies.......2007-02-20
I love this book!! I try and read it often to refresh myself on the contents. I was impressed that the book was printed on recycled paper, a percentage of the profits go to charity and its not a "buy my product" book also.
This book prouldy holds a spot in my Green Living Bookcase!
Beyond political agendas and judgmental shame tactics: just simple talk about living well in America........2006-09-24
There's some rubbish going around that there are two rigidly defined, black-and-white categories of people in the USA: conservative Republicans who don't care about the environment, and Al Gore's superforce of environmental enthusiasts. Or, if you prefer, blissfully ignorant normal people vs. crazy green hippie radicals. As a moderate who likes anybody whose category can't be rhymed with 'glass bowl', I dislike any either/or mindset. It's not the reasonable people who gain media attention, it's the radicals, and they become the stereotype of what we should avoid. In this vein, the absolute worst threat to the environment today is, ironically, the most passionate of environmentalists, whose self-righteous smugness and brimstone rants turn off the average reasonable person, understandably dismissing such vile attitudes. As with religion, environmental consciousness brings the stigma of personal manipulation via shame--for there are, no question, those who try to induce and exploit guilt for a hidden personal gain. The majority recognizes such 'activism' for what it is--at its worst, the pleasure of feeling superior to the 'unenlightened masses', labelled lazy, stupid, ignorant, blind, etc. simply for living in the world as it is. Those radical environmentalists who truly care at heart must see others from an empathic viewpoint, one which doesn't include heavy-handedness or bitter judgment, and thus has a chance of actually convincing others. This is the age of the new environmentalist--common people who come together for a cause that transcends political platforms, because regardless of our personal differences, we all want the same thing: a better life for us all. And you can bet that politicians across the board will need to listen. We are the voters, we have the power here, and we can encourage each other to use it in ways that benefit our country and our families.
What's refreshing about Nell Newman's book is that it is NOT a work of self-righteous extremism. Ms. Newman, while conscientious, passionate, and very 'green', doesn't try to shove rules down the throats of readers, nor does she stand on a soapbox and rant. She takes a nonpolitical, light-handed, self-critical, practical paradigm which communicates her point better than any alternative. In fact, she acknowledges that a lot of environmental suggestions are a tradeoff, and doesn't judge the reader for their personal decisions about what is manageable for them in their everyday life. All she tries to do, in this nicely written book, is offer thoughtful and intelligent research on how we can use the cutting-edge tools of our modern age along with well-tried old-fashioned ways of living, all to make life better. And that's something that pretty much everyone, whatever their politics or age or conscience or personal beliefs, wants to do.
If every American picked just two chapters from this book, and did only about 2 of the minor ideas listed in each, not only their environment but their own personal life would improve. I've tried the Newman's Own organic answer to popular cookies, which even my large chain grocery store carries, and you know what? In my book, besides being healthier, they actually taste BETTER than the commercial brand. The chocolate in the Newman-Os had a stronger flavor; the cream was softer, smoother, more appealing. And the Fig Newmans (har) redefined my idea of the word "Fig" and what it should taste like. It's also nice knowing that the actual profits go to charity rather than an already rich CEO's pockets. Organic may be a bit more expensive--now, while the businesses are small and struggling--but that will change the more we support them, and even in the meantime, the taste and health benefits are unquestionably worth it, at least once in a while. As Nell Newman frankly says in this book, the question is more, do we want to pay up front or down the road? In other words, would we prefer to pay a little more for the health of our pets, our family and ourselves now, or do we want to make it up in hospital and vet bills later?
Part of the reason we don't eat enough vegetables in this country is because we instinctively know they don't taste right. And they don't taste right because they aren't raised right, by small farmers with natural pesticides the way it should be. That's what organic eating is all about. Not being a hippie or a radical, or nut loaf with yeast gravy. Just supporting a better way of life and a better taste. After all, why give your dollar vote to a system that only tries to phase out partially hydrogenated oils after it becomes widely known among the public that they drastically increase the risk of heart disease, and even then uses tricks like '0 grams trans fat' to blind us to the fact that they're still legally allowed to put 0.5 grams into their stragtegically chosen serving size, which still adds up to an increased risk? The oils are listed in the ingredients, but they think we won't look there, relying on consumer trust to camouflage their cheap, unhealthful choices. And though wheat is becoming more popular as a selling point, its benefits can be stripped away without any indication given if you don't know their legal trick--that's the difference between 'wheat flour' and 'whole wheat flour'--whole wheat is what gives you the benefits, and it can be one of the last ingredients while still giving them the go-ahead to blast "NOW WITH WHOLE WHEAT!" all over the front label. Only '100% whole wheat' and 'NO trans fat' really mean healthy food, and those are the brands that deserve to be bought.
Judging from my range of emotions--disturbed at what unnatural pesticides used on produce can actually do to our bodies and our ecosystem, interested at the money-saver tips for energy, then slowly outraged at what I'd been unknowingly feeding my pet in giving her commercial dog food with vegetables and healthy meat printed all over the package--I'd say Nell Newman did a pretty good job of responsibly exposing the truth, with a little humor and charm along the way, and without being paranoid or alarmist. Corporations just think what they're doing is already good enough for the common person and animal--I've got to disagree with them. I think we deserve a better quality of life. And if enough people agree with that notion, we've got a fine basis for change right there.
That's only the food sections I've covered in this recommendation. If you're interested, pick up the book--there's a lot more to be seen and known, and it's your right to know it.
Good overview of "living green".......2006-07-26
I'm not a die-hard eco-liver, but I like to be good to the environment where I can. This book gave a lot of good ideas for just that. I also bought "Green Living" by The E Magazine at the same time. This one was better. It kept my interest and wasn't just a collection of fact and figures.
Highly recommended.
Buy a copy for your local library.......2006-05-29
The book may not have all that much to offer to those of us walking the talk environmentally, but it has great value as a book to give as a gift to someone who could use some wisdom and can do attitude as far as being materialistic.
Great book to give to your local library where hundreds of patrons will check it out. Now if someone could or would come out with a tough love book on the subject that would knock some sense into the average American.
It's the majority in my opinion who are NOT doing much to live either an organic life but a less materialistic one that bother me. The ones who drive the gas guzzlers while complaining of high gas prices. Or people who buy prepackaged or fast food for most meals each week. How do we reach these folks?

Book Description
"On the morning of my fifty-first birthday," writes author H. Jackson Brown, "I thought it would be interesting and maybe even enlightening to jot down a few things more than half a century of living had taught me." Soon he had accumulated quite a list. When a friend said he would contribute a few ideas of his own, Jackson decided to invite other friends and acquaintances -- from kindergarten kids and teenagers to senior citizens -- to join the effort.
Live And Learn And Pass It On contains the best of their answers, the combined wisdom of thousands of years of living. Here is what we have been taught by our parents, spouses, children, pastors, teachers, friends and enemies. They are lessons learned from loving and winning and loving and losing, the school of hard knocks, and the old method of trial and error. "Editing their entries convinced me that wisdom knows no age." Jackson says. "Regardless of how much we know, it is never enough. School is always in session, and life challenges us to excel at being both insatiable student and inspired teacher."

Mostly sound and interesting advice.......2005-01-17
There is the element of the cutesy- wootsy stuff that tries to entertain and falls flat, but by and large this collection centering on what people have learned in their lives(Ages five to ninety - five) contains a lot of solid wisdom .It also contains a vast number of sayings which give us pause, make us think, demand that we qualify and contradict.
A small work based on a good idea. (I will give a few of the sayings that may sound awkward as I am translating them back into English from the Hebrew edition of the book.)
" I learned that there is no subject you cannot teach yourself through reading"
"I learned that you can learn a lot about a man from the degree of happiness his wife has, and the degree of respect his children have for him.
I learned that to love and to be loved is the greatest delight in life.
I learned that generous people rarely suffer from emotional problems.
I learned that if you made an appointment for a doctor at eight in the morning you will still have to wait an hour.
I learned that what my grandmother said is correct: As one gets older time seems to go by much more fast.
A bit repetitive.......2004-06-12
A division by topic would make reading this book more fun and more useful. I also got tired of each line starting: "I'm learned that..." It would be more entertaining if the sentences were a little less structured. Some of the quotes seemed forced into this form.

H. Jackson Brown's work is a masterpiece!
To read his books simply makes you think and puts a smile on your face.
Thank you Mr. Brown.
live & learn & pass it on.......2000-06-21
this is a really awesome book! it has the cutest sayings about life and the ideal book to read when you're having a bad day or just need a lift. most of the sayings are true and from people of all ages, which is why it caught my attention. i had originally got this book browsing in a library on my college's campus and checked it out, not knowing what to expect. it has sayings in it like "if you keep doing what you've always done, you'll keep getting what you've always got" by a 51 year old; and that "even though its hard to admit, i'm secretly glad when my parents are strict with me" by a 15 year old, and that "a mule dressed in a tuxedo is still a mule" by a 70 year old and that "being a success at the office is not worth it if it means being a failure at home" by a 51 year old. after reading these passages, i'm positive that the average reader can look through the passages and find a lot that can and does relate to his or her life.

Wordy.......2004-12-03
This book lays down some great concepts which are right on the money, but it's so wordy, that the lessons in the book get easily drowned out and forgotten. It's hard to absorb, hard to retain, and the book is so long, you'll be an old person when you're done reading the whole thing! I could easily trim the verbose fat out of each chapter and end up with a book that's more effective and only one-third the total number of pages. I recommend it, but take notes.
Perfect and Straight to the Point.......2004-08-17
When I bought this book, I was expecting something like Dr. Phill's book with lots of exercise that are time consuming. This book was way beyond my expectations. Easy to read and straight to the point. The lessons of life are simple and make so much sense. The fact that the book focusses on the importance of Spiritual significance in your life nailed it for me. It is a very powerful book and it changed my life tremendously. If you feel lost, like your life suddenly has no meanning this is the book for you.
So dead on, yet easy to weave into my life.......2003-12-13
For the first time I have read a book that not only was so in tune with real life, but was something I could apply to my own daily life as I read page by page. I highly recommend no matter where you are in your life.
