5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for successful teaching methods!.......2000-05-15

I am a first year teacher, teaching study skills to high school students with learning disabilities. These students desparately need these skills, but are not the least bit interested in learning how to study or studying for that matter. I have poured over many textbooks desparately seeking ideas that might get these kids motivated to learn and had found nothing until I read this book. It includes 13 very useful techniques to present information to a group, and it can be used whether you are a teacher, speaker or presenter. Each technique is presented with step-by-step easy to follow guidelines for instructional practice. The book also includes planning and evaluation sheets for each technique that I have found invaluable. I have finally been able to get my classes to participate in the learning process through the use of these techniques. I have been repeatedly checking it out of the University library, but I was so excited to have found it offered here on Amazon.com. I'm definitly going to buy it!

1 out of 5 stars i didn't like this book.......2006-12-18

There is a negative tone set in the introduction, this book was not encouraging or uplifting, reading the whole book and didn't come away with new ideas or inspiration. This book repeatedly mentions the authors opinions without backing them up with experiences or research. I would have appreciated research to backup their statements or opinions. Also, I resented the (only) teacher of the year winner they recognized, that sitting in a desk and praying for a student each day, showering them with praise, worked to help the student... There is a section that lists everything you should have in a teachers desk, in the filing cabinet, etc... There didn't seem to be any unique suggestions I would think teaching experience would give them. Stapler and staples? No kidding. They jokingly mentioned handcuffs. Ha.Ha. I will not be keeping this book.

5 out of 5 stars The Book Every Teacher Needs .......2005-09-05

This book is what I was looking for as a new teacher. It's the common sense things you learn as you go but reading this book teaches you them before your first day as a teacher. I wish I had it last year. It is also an easy read and won't take much time out of your busy teaching life.

2 out of 5 stars Great for elementary only.......2003-08-06

For new teachers going into elementary school, this book is filled with good ideas and helpful advice. However, much of the writing is based on elementary students only. Most of the ideas would be considered too childish to use with middle or high school students. Also, many of the advice is clearly for elementary only (rewards for lining up in the hallway, giving students hugs, procedures for borrowing crayons, etc.) Looking at secondary teaching, I found this book disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars Survival Tips no Teacher Should be Without.......2000-11-09

As a newer teacher in Middle America, I found this compact book to be an extremely worthwhile investment of my time and money. This book has lots of examples and advice to handle those non-education scenarios that often "make or break" a new teacher. Great tips on dealing with other staff (not all will be helpful!), parents etc. This is a book that will help all teachers, especially newer ones like myself, thrive and survive. Buy it. Read it. Its worth it (as is First Days of School by Mary Wang).

5 out of 5 stars The Unauthorized Teacher's Survival Guide.......2000-07-28

As a preservice teacher, I have researched several dozen books of this nature, and I found this one to be the best. It is a compact size (for tucking into my book-bag or purse), and it has hundreds of real-world teaching tips, scenarios and situations for consideration. There's solid information on gaining insight into youself as a person and as a teacher, and down-to-earth and sensible information on how to be successful in the classroom from the start. I got a huge charge of self-confidence from reading this book.

    Book Description

A unique guidebook, training tool, and reference work for new and experienced administrators!

The role of the assistant principal is one of the least researched and least discussed topics in educational leadership … but the importance of the position in the day-to-day operation of the school site is growing every day.

This first-of-its-kind work addresses the multiple needs of students, instructors, and practitioners alike, helping new and experienced assistant principals develop the skills they need to move up the leadership ladder.

A specially designed questionnaire was administered to 100 assistant principals to assess their needs and knowledge; The Assistant Principal, unlike any other book of its kind, is the result of those field-based research findings. Educators and administrators, L. David Weller and Sylvia J. Weller, have created a practical and useful work that can help on a variety of levels:

As a comprehensive examination of the role, The Assistant Principal provides a fresh and valuable exploration of this increasingly important administrative position, identifying its strengths and potential weaknesses through real-life research-based data and the first-hand experience of 100 administrators.

As a professional development program, this book will be invaluable to teachers preparing for the role of assistant principal and assistant principals preparing for the principalship or related positions. Theory and field-based research are combined into one volume, complete with case studies, exercises, and examples.

As a reference guide for practicing assistant principals, Weller and Weller give readers a wealth of best leadership practices and practical examples that work, provided by practitioners in the field, as well as samples of surveys, evaluation instruments, and more. Designed for immediate application and easy use.

Weller and Weller address all the major issues that assistant principals face every day, offering strategies, tactics, and exercises for improvement, including:

As a reference guide, a training tool, and an examination of the profession, this all-in-one volume is essential for every administrator.

2 out of 5 stars Just an introduction to the supply chain concept.......2007-10-13

This book repeats many time same items and is too focused on distribution business e.g. Walmart, Paper utilities... and does not address the industrial worls such as in aeronautic, defense...
The information convied in this book is very general. for my point of view, it is unsufficient to start setting up a supply chain.

    4 out of 5 stars Good Overview.......2007-09-28

This book provides a good overview of the basic principles of supply Chain Managment. After reading the book, I was able to directly apply the principles to solve several problems in supply chains I am dealing with in my supplier development job.

The principles are logically presented and backed up with examples that illustrate their application. I would recommend this book especially for people in Manufacturing or engineering who are trying to understand how to improve performance across a supply chain or how to make their supply chain management process more efficient and effective.

4 out of 5 stars Buen libro para principiantes.......2007-06-06

Se entienden rapidamente los conceptos principales, un buen libro de comienzo en el tema.

4 out of 5 stars Good "Executive Summary".......2006-11-03

One of the best primers I have read so far on SCM. While not a blue-print on how to implment SCM, it really does provide an excellent overview of the benefits of SCM and the steps a company would take to introduce SCM. One of the best sections of the book introduces new trends within SCM. This section alone made the book a good investment. Recommend it for top management looking to get a good, but basic understanding of SCM

4 out of 5 stars Just as advertised.......2006-03-12

This book is a good overview and primer for anyone who is interested in learning what "Supply Chain Management" entails. It starts with a very basic definition and goes into specifics as the chapters progress.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Fairly useful.......2007-06-13

This book is divided into two sections. The first is advice for substitute teachers. It is very useful if you are a brand new sub and have never taught before. The second section is sample lesson plans, in case the teacher doesn't leave you one. I have a couple problems with the plans, in that most of the classes in my district are block periods, whereas these are set up to be 45-50 minutes. You could do a couple of them, but I have the feeling that the kids would be bored and quit paying attention to you. They also seem irrelevant to me, unless you were able to find a plan that fit in with where the class was at the time. I think a better backup substitute plan would be an age-appropriate video, and then use this book if you can't use the video. I realize that it is better to teach the kids something, but sometimes you gotta cut your losses. If the class is unruly a video is going to work a lot better than plans from this book. However, it is definitely a resource that I bring with me just in case, and since it's not too expensive, I think it's a worthwhile investment for a new substitute teacher.

1 out of 5 stars Sub teaching survival guide.......2007-01-16

I wouldn't waste my money on this one. There was nothing new or creative. I was dissapointed.

    5 out of 5 stars Great resource!.......2007-01-12

Very useful for grades 6-12. It is easy to get to what you need quickly.

2 out of 5 stars Okay, but Not Very Useful.......2007-01-02

This book is alright, but not very useful. It's pretty much all the same lesson repeated over and over again in different ways. I sub at a school where the students stay in the same room and teachers move. This book requires you to write A LOT on the board. Yes, this involves turning your back on a class for a long time at the beginning of class. This is not a good idea for any sub's "survival." You're better off finding free internet lesson plans in the various subject areas than wasting your money on this book.

5 out of 5 stars Substitute Teaching Survival Guide.......2006-02-18

This book has been a wonderful suppliment to my substitute teaching. The options are fabulous and I always take this book with me to every secondary subbing job I have. Also included in this book is a number of emergency lesson plans. I haven't needed them yet, but it's comforting knowing that they are available to me. This book also helped me design my disciplinary actions and how I introduce myself to the students. Subbing has become easier and organized. I feel it's a valuable book for any substitute teacher. It certainly helped me make every subbing job successful.
