Anyone who has read Paolo Coelho, knows how much wisdom there is in his words. This book of short passages are an excellent intro to Coelho if you have not read any other of his books. Wisdom for life, help through everyday issues and plenty of thoughtful insights for all kinds of situations. A must for anyone who ponders 'The Meaning of Life'.

I found this book an immense pleasure. It relieves me of the need to think I must be perfect to be of any use. It can also be used as a daily meditation book. I find every page enlightening

5 out of 5 stars Comfort reading.......2007-01-20

What I like most about this book is that it celebrates the journey of life by putting equal value upon the inevitable successes, failures, mistakes, heartbreak and joy we all experience along the way. The book imparts comfort along with it's wisdom, very important I think.

During his junior year at the University of California, Dan Millman first stumbled upon his mentor (nicknamed Socrates) at an all-night gas station. At the time, Millman hoped to become a world-champion gymnast. "To survive the lessons ahead, you're going to need far more energy than ever before," Socrates warned him that night. "You must cleanse your body of tension, free your mind of stagnant knowledge, and open your heart to the energy of true emotion." From there, the unpredictable Socrates proceeded to teach Millman the "way of the peaceful warrior." At first Socrates shattered every preconceived notion that Millman had about academics, athletics, and achievement. But eventually Millman stopped resisting the lessons, and began to try on a whole new ideology--one that valued being conscious over being smart, and strength in spirit over strength in body. Although the character of the cigarette-smoking Socrates seems like a fictional, modern-day Merlin, Millman asserts that he is based on an actual person. Certain male readers especially appreciate the coming-of-age theme, the haunting love story with the elusive woman Joy, and the challenging of Western beliefs about masculine power and success. --Gail Hudson

5 out of 5 stars Incredible book.......2007-10-20

This is a life changing book for anyone that takes it seriously. I would recommend this as well as Millman's other books in this series.

4 out of 5 stars Great book with lots of truth in it.......2007-10-17

Excellent book, with a lot of truths in it as well.
I don't know if I believe in Socrates, but truth is truth and many of the lessons in this book are true.
Reminds of the the book Illusions by Richard Bach, I like that one more, not as heavy handed as this one, but both can lead to a better understanding of life, and how to live ours to the fullest.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!!!!.......2007-09-16

This book is great. Must read for all human being to understand bigger picture of life and to get succeed in daily life.

5 out of 5 stars A Book That Changes Lives.......2007-09-05

Way of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman is a first-person narrative of the author's search for happiness. A student at the University of California at Berkley, Dan's life revolved around school and gymnastics. Stressed with his life Dan left his apartment and took a stroll around town. What he did not know is that this walk would change his life forever. His experiences and outlook on life changed once he entered the doors of the infamous gas station. Dan walked in the gas station and saw an old man sitting in a chair. When he walked out of the gas station, the same man was on the roof. Wanting to know how the man got on the roof, Dan returned nightly to obtain his answer. Over numerous years, Dan learned lessons that aided in his quest to become a Warrior.

Dan Millman is a University of California at Berkley graduate, a world trampoline champion, and member of the Gymnastics Hall of Fame. He was the director of gymnastics at Stanford University, and later became a professor at Oberlin College. He has written 13 self-help books and gives talks and seminars all over the United States and abroad. He currently lives in Northern California with his family.

This book is incredibly powerful and leaves the reader with a new perspective on life. The vividness of word choice creates a surreal vision. An explanation of The Warrior is offered by Socrates, Dan's guide on his new quest. Socrates, 94, incorporates Eastern philosophy and Western fitness to embark on a spiritual odyssey to discover the meaning of life and becoming a warrior. Socrates uses humor, kindness, and love in his teachings to convey that happiness, creativity, and fulfillment can be achieved by developing one's human potential. By the end of the book, it is difficult to have dry eyes. The reader really connects with Dan and has a desire for him to be successful in his journey.

This book was very hard to locate and is found in the New Age section of bookstores, an unusual area to search for a personal growth/fiction book. It is a story based on true aspects of Millman's life.

This book is recommended for teenagers and older. It is important to have a good grasp of vocabulary and some life experience to understand the concept of this book. Other books by Dan Millman are: The Life You Were Born to Live: A Guide to Finding Your Life Purpose, and Wisdom of the Peaceful Warrior: A Companion to the Book that Changes Lives. The reader must be open to new ideas, and new ways of looking at oneself and the world to appreciate this story.

Way of the Peaceful Warrior has been made into a movie starring Nick Nolte, Scott Mechlowicz and Amy Smart. The movie version recently came out on DVD.

Book Description

Four years after training with the old warrior he calls Socrates, and in spite of all he has learned, Dan Millman confronts personal failure and growing frustrations. Disillusioned with his life, unable to bridge the gap between knowing and doing, he sets out on a worldwide quest to rediscover his sense of purpose and source of inspiration. A buried memory sends him on a search for a woman shaman deep in a Hawaiian rain forest. She is the gateway to all his hopes and his fears — and only she can prepare him for what is to come. In worlds of shadow and light, he encounters inner tests, mortal challenges, disturbing revelations, and memorable characters in the most crucial quest of his life. This is the sacred journey we all share, says Millman, the journey to the light that shines at the heart of all our lives.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Socrates. story is Millman's best work!.......2007-09-13

I saw the movie first and THEN bought the books. I liked all of his books but this was by far my favorite-especially with the surprise ending. The former Olympian, Dan Millman, has an interesting way of blending truth and fantasy in his auto-biographical novels so that you don't know where the reality ends but this book is delightfully inspiring and hard to put down. His characters are so engaging that you almost feel as if you know them personally instead of second hand through his words. And as he heals himself you find strength gathering deep in your core. Hemmingway he isn't but can definitely give Dwyer, Chopra, Redfield and Quinn a run for their money.-
It seems like one always finds these types of books at a time one needs them most- but as his grandfather was fond of saying, "Nothing is coincidence."

1 out of 5 stars Love Millman, hated this book........2007-08-24

I have been a Dan Millman for over 20 years. I own almost all of his books, but this was by far the worst. If I had read this one 1st I never would have picked up another book by him.
This book goes too far into the "mystic" and "new age" side of his teachings. It was too far fetched for me. Minor details did not fit with what was written in "The Way of the Peaceful Warrior." One MAJOR thing was that "Joseph" comes back from the dead to make an appearance in this story. Not a vision - Joseph is alive and well and raising a family.
Everything else I have read by Dan, has inspired me to make changes in my life and try to improve, not so with this story.
It does have some insightful thoughts, but they are few and far between.
Finishing it was drudgery. Do yourself a favor, choose another title and let Dan inspire you.

4 out of 5 stars The Sacred Warrior review ~.......2007-08-11

I am currently enjoying the Sacred Journey of the Peaceful Warrior. Although I have not ended the book, it is uplifting and fun reading for early mornings in the hot tub!!! It is somewhat spiritually uplifting and I appreciate that very much. I have other projects in the middle that is why the reading is going a little more slowly but in this way I can enjoy it a little more as well. Thank you for this review.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent follow-up to Peaceful Warrior.......2007-05-21

I think what intrigues me most about Millman's work is the psuedosemi-autobiographical nature of the the stories he tells. The anecdotes that didn't actually happen drive home a very powerful point, and the anecdotes that did actually happen are just as amazing and world-view altering as the fiction.

In Sacred Journey, Millman shares with his readers another of his teachers on his path through life. Saturated with the wit, inspiration, and one-liners that so well established themselves in Peaceful Warrior, this book is expands upon his quest to enlightenment by focusing on the instructions of a wise Kahuna woman.

I highly recommend this book to those interested in learning about the journey of this peaceful warrior--one of many possible paths.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent story!.......2007-01-10

This book really should only be read after you have read Way of the Peaceful Warrior. This one takes place sort of in the middle of the other. It states in the preface the exact page number where you could actually put the other book down, read this one, and then pick the other back up again and continue on. But, it is a great story and I highly recommend it!

War is hell, but if you prepare properly for war, there's not much about life that will take you by surprise. At least, that's the premise of Unleashing the Warrior Within, in which author Richard Machowicz takes the lessons he learned as a Navy SEAL and applies them to real-life situations.

For example, in war you learn that there are three dynamic elements of combat: target, weapons, and movement. The target dictates the weapons, and the weapons dictate movement. In real life, your target is what you want; your weapons are your skills; and movement is whatever you need to get in position to use your skills.

But, since deciding upon a target is the step that's most troubling to people, he adds another wartime analytical tool called the CARVER matrix. You lay out various targets you may have in life--a better job; getting in shape; buying a new house; and taking on a new business partner, say. Then you assess the criticality, accessibility, recognizability, and vulnerability of the target, plus its effect on your overall mission in life, and the potential return on your effort.

Machowicz calls his philosophy Bukido, and when you take his classes in Los Angeles, you learn self-defense along with these life-improvement skills. In this book, the object is to get you to choose a mission that is closest and most important to you, and then achieve your goals with military precision. By the time you're through learning the seven principles of combat, what you've really learned is how to think critically and focus your efforts. Machowicz uses his students as examples of how the enemy in life is really a lack of action, allowing life to take you along for a ride. So if your current target is a solid self-improvement course, Unleashing the Warrior Within could be your most effective weapon. --Lou Schuler

Book Description

Richard Machowicz knows first hand that life can be a lot like war. A ten-year veteran of the Navy SEALs, he was trained to complete whatever mission was handed to him, under any condition, because failure was not an option. Now, in Unleash the Warrior Within, Machowicz takes the winning attitude and mental skills he mastered in service and shows readers how to use combat mentality to reach their goals in everyday life. Using his seven principles of combat—which include Create an Action Mind-Set, The Critical Keys to Conquering Anything, and Guarantee the Win—Machowicz shows readers how to master the arts of focus, discipline, and determination under any circumstances, giving them the tools they need to conquer fear and turn their ambitions and dreams into reality. A new preface is included in this paperback edition of this inspiring guide. “Machowicz gives you the tools necessary to ensure that you win in the battle of life.”—Jim Rome, host of the nationally syndicated radio show, The Jungle, and FOX television’s The Last Word

5 out of 5 stars Great book to get yourself focused on achieving your goals.......2007-06-28

On the surface this book may appear to be either similar to many of the other ex-military books describing the life of a member of the special forces or a self-help type book geared towards males. It actually falls somewhere in between. Unlike other books about Navy Seals that tell you what it took physically, this tells you what it took mentally and psychologically to persevere through BUD/S training. The anecdotes about Machowicz's life in the Seals is the backdrop to a mental discipline he describes in straight forward language. The book describes many mental techniques to keep you moving forward towards what you really want to do, as well as finding out what is holding you back. One of the more useful concepts in the book was a simple exercise that shows you where you should really be spending your time and effort. Like Sun Szu's Art of War being applied to the corporate world, this ex-Navy Seal's experience can be applied to your daily life. While many psychological based books tell you how you should run your life, this one simply provides you with psychological tools and leaves the rest to you. Anyone feeling like they are in a rut or find their goals just out of reach should read this book.

4 out of 5 stars Good Read.......2007-05-09

I judge all books that I read by a simple parameter - If I can get at least 1 worthwhile thought, piece of knowledge, or idea from any book that I read - then it was well worth it. This book gave me a few great concepts - with the most notable for me being "You can ALWAYS do more than you THINK you can". I am sure Richard Machowicz attained this thought process from his Navy Seal days...but I have used the concept frequently since I have read the book to help me attain higher results in a variety of situations than I may have previously. For me - that's a winner.

5 out of 5 stars Focus and direction in a cheap paperback!.......2007-04-11

I tend to be one of those people with a million ideas but never enough time to finish them all. This book offers a unique method to rank and prioritize goals that I found to be very helpful in deciding what is worth pursuing and what should be put off for later. I've found it much more useful than any other time-management system I've learned, including expensive corporate-sponsored Franklin Covey courses on focus and time management. And so cheap compared to a corporate seminar!

5 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE! MUST READ!.......2007-03-15

This is not so much a "self help" book as it is more for "self worth!" In it, Mack teaches you how to tap into your potential, to make yourself a stronger, more confident person. Being in law enforcement, I must recommend this book to all my brothers and sisters in blue!

3 out of 5 stars Fighting Your Demons.......2006-12-16

In this relatively short book, the author encourages civilains battling everyday problems to use the principles of combat to succeed. A former Navy SEAL, the author intersperses his techniques with anecdotes from his SEAL experience.

The writing is terse and the book ends abruptly but his adventures as a SEAL are both harrowing and fascinating. However, the weakness of the book is the heavy military vernacular and the paucity of examples where his system is applied to mundane struggles. His system is certainly time tested but resistance based (everything is a fight and involves knocking down targets). While his personal journey is impressive, his system is unwieldy particuarly when compared with some of the better Law of Attraction materials so popular today.

This book provides a tough, no nonsense approach to life and goal setting. The demanding SEAL regimen leaves no room for error or lack of committment. However, implementing the system may be too challenging for most.

5 out of 5 stars For those that have a warrior inside............2007-07-28

As a young man, I found Warrior of the Light to be truly amazing. It didn't present many new ideas, but delivered the same messages in a way that was extremely accessible for me. Coelho uses the setting of a warrior on his personal journey to share his lessons on life. While most spiritual messages seem to encourage suppression of male energy, Coelho uses the warrior archetype and taps into the primal spirit of man, telling us it is okay to let the warrior out. This really spoke to me and integrated two parts of myself that hadn't seen eye to eye. Obviously this book isn't for everyone, but for the right audience it is a grand-slam.

5 out of 5 stars Warrior of the Light.......2007-03-25

This is one of those books you will read over and over again. I love it. It has a great message and only gets better as I reread it.

4 out of 5 stars Live the warrior archetype to understand it.......2006-08-31

I read this soon after I was touched by The Alchemist.

First of all, I don't think we could make direct comparison with the Alchemist. The writing style is totally different. Those looking for an inspiring "story" like Alchemist will be disappointed. Rather, think of WotL as collection of a wise uncle/mentor advices. If you are familiar with Mahabharata, think of it like Bhagavad Gita episode of the epic, where Krishna passed down his wisdom to the doubting Arjuna.

Carl Jung suggested that there are universal "archetypes" that all mankind can relate to create meaning of their life. This is exactly how to read WotL: see yourself in the shoes of a "warrior" on the quest to his dream, plunge yourself in the archetype, then it will make sense. If you still put on that urban city slicker hat and look for instant enlightment, you won't get it. You should read Dr. Phil or Anthony Robbins instead.

5 out of 5 stars a life afirmation.......2006-07-11

My girlfriend was kind enough to introduce Coelho to me by giving me this particular book. It is a book of one page "lessons" and details a warrior of light code. There were passages in the book that resonate with me still because they affirm how I was living my life. Also, some answers to some of my deeper questions on life were given, and some subjects I have not had time to think about were introduced. I love this book, and would recommend it to anyone who needs a new perspective on going through this thing called life and doing so in an aware, awake manner.

5 out of 5 stars Seals approach to success........2004-02-03

When I first put this tape in I thought to myself what the heck is this guy going on about. But I kept on going. It will grow on you. Richard's navy seal strategy to success is definitely one of the original motivational tapes out there. With a warriors attitude and what the author describes as "Testical Fortitude" you know your in for a ride. The author takes real navy missions and turns them into business strategies. With a philosophy of breaking rules only hurts the person who made the rules Richard just puts a foot in the face of whoever stands in the way. Dont be a follower. Set the standard not live up to it. Its a very inspiring look at a different approach to success. Exciting and motivating.

Great book. I like Dickie's straight forward, everything goes approach. Very practical and useful advice you can put to use right away no matter what your career is.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as Leadership Secrets.......2002-03-21

Another good motivational book from the Rogue, but I have seen much of the same ideas in a lot of his other books. I would still recommend it to anyone intrested in looking for a good motivational book.

5 out of 5 stars Straight talk from a straight shooter.......2000-07-03

I have read several business success books but none of the others even came close to this one. Marcinko cuts through all the politics and political correctness and delivers an excellent set of principles applicable to any industry. His war stories are more than just entertaining, they really drive home the points that he is making about the importance of planning, training, etc. This is must reading for everyone who is a warrior at heart regardless of their field of endeavor.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Make Excuses, be a Leader!.......2000-06-30

This book is entertaining and well written. The stories used to illustrate the points made are usually an adventure in themselves. Richard Marcinko practices what he preaches and this book will tell you how to do the same. This is an easy to read guide to being successful and the best book of its' kind I have ever read. This gives the reader the no excuses, no BS way to succeed. Buy this book!

The most valuable attributes of this book are the positive tone and the inspirational stories. This is not an elitist manifesto that tells you how great the author is. It is a practical, down-to-earth guide that is beneficial to individuals in a corporate setting as well as people who are looking to start a business.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to make money and be happy doing it.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for Ambitious Executives and Entrepreneurs.......2006-06-09

I have always felt that it's not enough to be good, you have to be perceived as superior by the people that determine your success. If you work in a company, that means you boss, senior management and your colleagues. If you run your own business, it's your clients, prospects and employees.

That's why David Lorenzo's book, Career Intensity, is so valuable. Lorenzo provides concrete ideas and steps to take that will show you how to ignite your career and "brand" yourself for business success.

I especially liked the stories of executives and entrepreneurs of all stripes that demonstrate his career intensity principles.

Some Things Are Worth Fighting For

Young men aspire to it. Women admire it. Yet the definition of manhood itself is obscured by a culture in moral free fall. This book cuts through the fog and defines a powerful blueprint for being the man—the Tender Warrior—that God desires for you and your family. You’ll discover that a Tender Warrior: watches out for what lies ahead—like a wagon train scout; keeps his commitments, no matter how painful; has a tender heart beating beneath his armor; understands his responsibility to his wife, children, and friends; recognizes that he is “under orders from higher headquarters.”

Stu Weber ’s now classic teaching on a man’s vigilance, staying power, and consideration for the women in his life will move you to pursue the man you were created to be.

Real Men Are Tender Warriors

“I drank Budweiser, smoked Marlboros, and chased women…. Tender Warrior sent me deeper into my heart and soul. When I finished it, I passed it on to a friend, who was supposed to give it back but passed it on to someone else. This book changed his life. It knocked down the walls around his heart. His response: ‘The most important thing that has happened in my life started when you sent me that book.’”

Story Behind the Book

((no story behind. Instead, endorsements)):

“ Tender Warrior provides hope for men by challenging their assumptions and shaping their convictions. Read it. Devour it. Then live it. This is the time for real men to emerge.”

—Dennis Rainey, executive director, FamilyLife

“In a day when our culture is at once confused and concerned over gender identity, men everywhere would to do well to recalibrate their personal compasses by the biblical benchmarks found in Tender Warrior . I highly recommend this book!”

—Dr. Bruce Wilkinson , New York Times bestselling author

4 out of 5 stars Required reading for husbands.......2007-07-03

Stu Weber takes off the gloves and gives it to you straight. If you're a husband and/or father, God's word has some things you need to know. Avoid making the common mistakes and get prepared for the challenges.

5 out of 5 stars A needed wake up call .......2007-06-22

This book sat on my shelf for six years before I finally picked it up. I am sorry I waited so long. I could have avoided some heartache and the mistakes I made that caused them.

"Tender Warrior" is a biblical examination of what makes a man. Using scripture, experience, and anecdotes from his own life and the lives of other men Weber uncovers some truths that have been lost to men in our society over the past few decades. He paints in broad bushstrokes that may startle and rub some the wrong way, but keep reading. You will find valuable insights straight from the pages of the bible that will challenge you to look again at yourself and reevaluate how you are doing as a man. At the end of each chapter are reflection questions for individual and group study.

There is something for all men in this book, so read it whether you are married, single, nearing the end of your journey, or just starting out.

I think I will read this book again and find some men to read it with so we can hone each other into the men that God wants us to be.

5 out of 5 stars Listen up guys!.......2006-12-17

I am knee-deep into reading this wonderful book. Men, Stu Weber is the kind of guy we all like to drink a brewskie with. And when a guy like that, a guy you respect, spends some time slapping you around and helping you "get-in-line", well... you listen. So, I'm reading and I'm learning. Plain & simple, this book has helped me to become a better man.

5 out of 5 stars Oustanding! .......2004-12-15

This book should be mandatory reading to every Christian male. It should be given to every young man so that he starts off his walk right. One of the best books I've ever read. Ever since I first read this book, I've given and continue to give copies to every one who I think might read it. If you can, also try to order his other books. I especially like Spirit Warriors. Do yourself, your family, and your community a favor and order Stu Weber's books.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on being a Christian father and husband.......2004-08-21

This is an excellent and inspiring book for all men who want to be what God has called them to be. I think most men know that we're not living up to all that we could or should be, but so many of us don't know what to do about it. We're not being "real men." So many of us didn't have good role models in our own fathers, and this book can help fill in the gaps. For example, I use this book when working with young men whose wives or (more often) girlfriends are pregnant at the Crisis Pregnancy Center where my wife and I volunteer.

Now, for those of you who may be thinking "Oh no, not another 'get naked and beat tribal drums' book," Weber discusses several of the "drum beating" types of books, fairly discussing their positive points but concluding that they fall way short of where they need to in their search for authentic manhood. To find what men are made to be, you have to go back to the Author himself: past one man's personal insights into himself, past ancient tribal customs, past the "old stories": to the original Author Himself. This is a very Biblically-based book, and Weber makes no apologies for that.

Weber divides manhood into four divisions, which he calls King, Warrior, Mentor, and Friend. This general theme is discussed in some other books on manhood (as Weber admits) but not as Biblically as Weber does it. For example, another book calls them "blueprints" of a man: Weber says he prefers to think of them as "fingerprints" of the man's Creator.

But Weber doesn't hang his entire book on these four (rather arbitrary) divisions. Weber then finds a common thread throughout all of them: Initiative. I think this idea of Initiative being the core of manhood was one of the most insightful single contributions Weber makes. To quote: "Just as a compass without a needle is not a compass, a man without Initiative is not a man." Perfect.

He also very clearly shows how Initiative is not equal to being Bossy. Taking Initiative means taking initiative in helping out around the house, in saying you're sorry, in asking your wife's help, in asking "what do my wife and kids need right now that I can help with?" It's about as far from bossy or (in the tiresome language of critics) "50's Ozzie and Harriet" as you can get.

Most of the rest of the book is spent working out how the four divisions of manhood and the central thread of Initiative applies to various situations and people in a man's life. The chapter "Does Anyone Here Speak 'Woman'?" is worth the price of the book.

I only have two very tiny negative comments about the book. First, the war-time metaphors and examples from Weber's own life as an Army Ranger won't appeal to everybody. For myself, I enjoyed reading them and they helped, but found it difficult to relate in a few cases because I my background isn't the same. One can't fault Weber that much, though: he simply wrote as who he is.

Second, I think this book would be best with an older, more mature man alongside a younger one. (I am working with two younger men right now.) It might not impact a young man as strongly if given to him if he is not able to have an older (or at least same maturity level) man come alongside him. The obvious solution: be that older man. Don't just give it to your kids: work through it with them, and encourage them to work with their friends.

I also bought the audio version of this book. I have two negative comments about the audio version. First, it's only available on cassette. I wanted to give somebody a copy of it, but he can only play CDs, so I had to buy it on cassette, rip it, and burn to CD. (Yes, I did this all legally.) That was a drag, and the resulting quality is rather low. Second, the audio version is not only shorter, but actually combines two chapters from the book (9 and 10). This makes it hard to track against the book. However, it is still a positive for those who are auditory learners and have more time to listen than to read. As most men probably fall into this category, I hope the publisher will consider bringing the audio version out on CD.

In summary: get this book, read it, highlight it, re-read it, work through it with your friends. And watch God turn you into the man you know you were created to be.

Book Description

A big house, fancy cars, and money in the bank seldom lead to a fulfilling life, a life true to one's potential and essential nature. Ordinary life can be a prison, but it doesn't have to be that way.

In this updated edition of The Craft of the Warrior, author Robert Spencer asserts that a new myth is emerging—one that guides people to a life of conscious living, where they escape the rat race and forge a new destiny based on real choice. The warrior's way leads from compulsion to freedom, from boredom to adventure, and from darkness to awareness. Synthesizing the works of Carlos Castaneda, Dan Millman, G.I. Gurdjieff, and Chogyam Trungpa, and combining personal growth processes including the Feldenkrais Method and Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Spencer opens the gate to anyone with enough spunk to enter this way of life.

"The amount of free will we have is directly proportional to the degree of freedom we have from our compulsions," writes Spencer. "Getting that freedom is the task of the warrior's life."

4 out of 5 stars War! What Is It Good For?.......2006-09-02

This slender volume serves as an introduction to several of the various schools of thought concerning the concept of modern-day Warriorship as a path to personal power and self-improvement. Robert L. Spencer discusses some of the core concepts of Warriorship, such as personal power and impeccability. He also addresses many of the pitfalls facing the student of the Warrior way.

CRAFT OF THE WARRIOR is decidedly philosophical in outlook, geared toward the spiritual. This is not a "success" book in the vein of THINK AND GROW RICH or HOW TO LIVE THE JAMES BOND LIFESTYLE.

Spencer briefly summarizes the teachings of Carlos Castaneda, Dan Millman, Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, G.I. Gurdjieff, Feldenkrais, A Course in Miracles, and Neuro-Linguistic Programming as schools of thought in this area (there are others). The reader is invited to explore any or none of them at his leisure.

As a starting point in Warrior learning THE CRAFT OF THE WARRIOR should be read in conjunction with THE AWAKENED WARRIOR by Rick Fields, a series of essays on the subject which provides practical examples along with the theory in this book.

2 out of 5 stars Psychology for slaves.......2004-07-21

There's nothing in it about building authority or winning over enemies, rather you will find the usual Buddhist practice of rationalizing intellectual laziness, submissiveness, and concrete-bound (non-) "thinking". Calling a person practicing what the book preaches a warrior is in my opinion highly misleading. Real warriors interested in personal emancipation and the philosophy of winning will learn more from authors of books about life strategies (like Robert Greene or Balthasar Gracian) and sports psychology.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to the way of the spiritual warrior.......2002-12-26

The path of spiritual knowledge and freedom has often been described by using the metaphor of "going to war"; hence the term "warrior." Make no mistake, though, this book has nothing to do with violence or military action. It is not a Green Beret handbook and has no photos on how to perform a proper takedown. Rather, it is a textbook and reference manual on the development of spiritual power.

Many others have traversed this same territory, and the author is a student of various paths, and so he presents a synthesis of some of the threads he has encountered: Carlos Castaneda and the Toltecs, Dan Millman, Shambhala, G.I. Gurdjieff, the Feldenkrais method, A Course in Miracles, and Neuro-Linguistic Programming are his main sources, alongside his personal experience as a psychotherapist.

The result is a very useful and well-organized distillation of the ways and means to personal power -- power over self, as opposed to power over others. People familiar with any of the above sources will find similar concepts here, but presented in a very straightforward format (as opposed to some of the storytelling styles of some of the sources). The seeking of personal power is, after all, a very practical pursuit, not something limited to stories about people who have had supernatural experiences or extraordinary teachers.

The warrior's way represents simply the most effective and efficient way of living in the world: with minimization of energy waste and maximization of available resources, achieved through honing the self down to a fine point by relentless self-examination and action. It requires discipline, nonattachment, compassion, and surrender of self to be truly free, and these things are available to anyone. Spencer's book makes this all the more clear in his drawing from many sources, showing that, truly, truth and opportunities for gaining power can be found almost anywhere you look.

All in all, a most lucid presentation and thorough description of what is expected of a person on the warrior's path. I would also recommend A Toltec Path, by Ken Eagle Feather.

4 out of 5 stars Tools for the Art of Conscious Living.......1998-09-20

Robert L. spencer delivers tools of the trade for personal empowerment based on examples from current foreward-thinking authors such as Dan Millman, Carlos Casteneda, Brooke Medicine Eagle, and others.

The ideas of these authors are not brought forth to debate their reality, but rather what we might find useful from their ideas to break out of old comfortable habits and find new ways of looking at life and seeing ourselves.

Spencer quotes Millman and Casteneda, "The happiness of the ordinary person is tied to the events of her day. Warriors generate their own happiness."

5 out of 5 stars A great book to the ways of warriorship........1998-02-16
