2 out of 5 stars Read it to continue the story, but don't expect much.......2007-09-08

It took me a long time to read this book because the story was not very interesting for large spans of the book, and I really dislike the character Nynaeve.

Spoiler Alert Below:
However, the one thing that I really, really resent about the book was Jordan's very poor choices in presenting the story. There were basically three climatic events in the story: Rand chasing down Couladin and the Shaido clan, Nynaeve and Elayne finding the Aes Sedai hideout, and Rand destroying some Forsaken. We spend hundred of pages following Rand's trek out of the wasteland in pursuit of the Shaido. I am looking forward to a big battle with Couladin. HOWEVER, once we finally reach the confrontation with Couladin, it is presented from a Mat's reflection on the events. OMG! All of that time spent building it up, and it is basically blown off in a few sentences and barely described in those - like it did not really even matter. The same thing happened at the other two climatic events: they were built up and basically blown off.
This book is nothing more than a filler in the series. I will continue with book 6, but I am not beginning it with enthusiasm like I did book 5.

3 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03

This fifth Wheel of Time book goes a bit more widescreen.

Mat, now being the general to beat all generals with his Bene Gesserit-general-specific type memory knowledge, is an obvious choice when you have a fairly heavy duty war to be fought.

The only problem is, there is likely to be more than one, and in different places.

Those sneaky Forsaken are still hanging around, too.

5 out of 5 stars A Modern Classic!!!.......2007-07-17

This novel takes everything a step further - another worthy addition to an epic tale.

3 out of 5 stars Mary Sue characters at their worst........2007-06-26

Okay, I like elements of Jordan's books, but this novel jumped the shark for me. Must every one of the main character's have a 'secret power'? No more normal humans, no, Min can predict the future, Egwene can dreamwalk, Nynaive is super powerful (but only when angry), Mat can channel dead Generals, Rands has hordes of nubile women lusting after him, Perrin... I won't even go there about Perrin's super-keen-but-oh-so-silly wolf abilities, which seemed to drop out of the sky. Where are the NORMAL people? I'm all for the super powers *in moderation* but what makes fantasy interesting is the struggles between normal joes and the super powered ones. When Jordan makes every one of his characters super-human the believability goes down the toilet.

Also, Jordan's fantasy race the Aiel seem to be a race of Mary Sues. They can out-fight, out-hunt and out-run normal humans. Their customs are deemed superior they look down their noses at everyone else. The Aiel annoy me to the very core, as Jordan seemed to have created this unbelievable race to serve Jordan's messiah-ish character Rand.

There are some other ick moments in this book for me. Jordan clearly seems to be setting up Rand to become some sort of fantasy Polygamist ala Heinlein. Ick. Also there is a strange element of humiliating powerful women which Heinlein seems to enjoy. Women are often spanked or 'thrashed' and male characters aren't. Also, he creates situations where characters are forced to do humiliating things such as.... The trio of former aes sidai forced to laundry, fetch, and clean for the general as 'punishment.' It seems a bit petty giving the characters lives are in danger.

This was an entertaining novel, but the mary-suism really needs to be dialed down. 3 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Wheel of time Audio.......2007-04-05

I actually was already a big fan of the book series, but these audio versions are extremly well done also, with very good narration and quality. Much better than most audiobooks I have tried in the past. Most importantly they are unabridged, which is very important with a story this complex. I was extremely happy with this product.

Book Description

The Band, who backed Bob Dylan when he went electric in 1965 and then turned out a half-dozen albums of beautifully crafted, image-rich songs, is now regarded as one of the most influential rock groups of the '60s. But while their music evoked a Southern mythology, only their Arkansawyer drummer, Levon Helm, was the genuine article. From the cotton fields to Woodstock, from seeing Sonny Boy Williamson and Elvis Presley to playing for President Clinton, This Wheel’s on Fire replays the tumultuous history of our times in Levon’s own unforgettable folksy drawl. This edition is expanded with a new afterword by the authors.

4 out of 5 stars Everything I wanted to know..........2007-09-21

This is an excellent source for those wanting to know about The Band. It's always better to have a first hand description of events. There was so much I didn't know or understand about The Band, and to get the information directly from Levon was unbeatable. Very entertaining, easy to read, hard to put down. Excellent portrait of the '50's - '60's Toronto club scene of which very little seem to be known, but was very relevant as a lot of important figures came from it. It'll make you want to listen to the albums again, but much more closely. You really want to get a real taste of what it was like to be around these great musicians and men.

Levon with Richard and Rick and Garth tell it like it was in a "down home" way. I found it a fascinating read that made a lot of their songs take on a whole new meaning for me. After reading it I had to pull out all the old Band LP's and was delighted to hear them again with a new perspective. If you liked The Band... BUY THE BOOK !!

5 out of 5 stars A treasure trove of inside info about The Band .......2007-07-11

"This Wheel's On Fire" is an amazingly comprehensive history of the life and times of The Band, from their formation to their ultimately sad disintegration, told from the perspective of Levon Helm, drummer, singer, co-founder of this legendary conglomeration of talented musicians. Readers will learn an astoundingly amount of industry-insider info about the musicians, as well as a blisteringly honest and candid assessment of the music industry. Told from the perspective of Levon, with source input from other Band members, producers, engineers, arrangers, and musicians, this book rips apart the curtains of secrecy, rumour, and innuendo, revealing just what goes on in the process of becoming what many in the industry consider to be one of the seminal groups of rock and roll history.

Product Description

Harmonious Environment: Beautify, Detoxify & Energize Your Life, Your Home & Your Planet, by Norma Lehmeier Hartie, is an indispensable reference book for anyone who cares about their health and well being and for the future of the planet. Hartie concisely covers a wide range of subjects and includes a comprehensive listing of advisory organizations, product and service resources. Part I of the book, Banish the Ugly from Your Life, is a blueprint for green, sustainable living. Discover how to replace toxic and unsustainable products from household cleaners to food (including recipes) to furniture to personal care products with safe, eco-friendly ones. Hartie is the tough but motivational Life Coach in her approach to cleaning, removing clutter and on organizing the home or office. Part II, Bring in the Beautiful to Create a Harmonious Environment and Self, includes a chapter on Earth-based spirituality and a fascinating look at the Four Elements (Earth, Fire, Air and Water) and the Medicine Wheel. The core of Hartie s philosophy blossoms in Chapter Seven, Applying Harmonious AdjustmentsTM: Using Feng Shui and Other Techniques for Powerful Results. Unlike other Feng Shui authors, Hartie has experience as a designer and her skills are apparent in this chapter and the following two. She has combined principles of Feng Shui, the Four Elements, color, energy, Vastu, and good design principles that create a unique and eclectic approach to home decorating. Finally, Hartie provides guidance on how to manifest personal or professional desires. In Part III, Putting the Pieces Together, Hartie skillfully integrates the many subjects of the book into a unified and cohesive whole. At its cover price of $19.95, Harmonious Environment is a value alone for the comprehensive green living product suppliers in the Resources section. What makes this book so truly ambitious, however, is what lies beneath the surface. In a sense, this book is only marginal

5 out of 5 stars Transform Your Home into a Peaceful Sanctuary.......2007-04-10

"The energy from flowers is so bright and strong that they can be put anywhere in the home and they will enhance your life." ~ pg. 217

Norma Lehmeier Hartie is a design consultant and Harmonious Adjustment practitioner who enjoys gardening and cooking. She created the practice of Harmonious Adjustments to give her clients the chance to reconnect with nature and to manifest their personal and professional dreams. Through her book she introduces ideas for detoxing and decluttering your home environment.

If you want a happier, healthier lifestyle that is more in harmony with nature, then Norma Lehmeier Hartie's book has a world of information to make this possible. She can help you:

Remove toxic products from your home and garage
Clean and organize your home
Buy environmentally friendly cleaning products
Organize your home for more peace and harmony
Find healthy personal care products
Grow plants that help to control pollution - A list of the Fifty Best Houseplants
Find the best choices in flooring
Figure out how to recycle larger items like a refrigerator
Cook more safely and use kitchen scraps for your garden
Formulate a plan to keep your house clean
Organize every room in the house
Decorate with Confidence

Reading through the list of harmful products gives you an idea of the ingredients to avoid in cleaners and how they can affect your health. For an antibacterial spray, the author suggests water and essential oils and for cleaning silver she also suggests more natural solutions like baking soda and vinegar. Using Borax and water is less dangerous than chlorine bleach fumes and you may want to try this in your shower. You may enjoy products by Seventh Generation.

Chapter three felt a little out of my personal range of expertise, although we know that thoughts can affect our environment and life and can move our life in a positive or negative direction. This chapter deals more with spiritual practices. Chapter 6 also delves into a deeper connection with nature, personality types and elemental powers. The list of Yin and Yang is helpful to create a balance of the two in your home. An entire chapter is also dedicated to plants, gemstones and crystals.

"If you are the average American woman, you expose yourself to over two hundred synthetic chemicals that are found in the products you use as you prepare yourself for the day. These products do not simply sit on your skin; approximately sixty percent of these ingredients get absorbed into your bloodstream." ~ pg. 91

Chapter four is especially informative and essential if you are trying to be healthier and want to find organic alternatives to products filled with synthetic chemicals. Why should you avoid petroleum and talc? Why is there lead in hair dye?

The section on an Eco-Friendly Kitchen is interesting and the chapter on natural and organic foods also gives ideas on how to save time in the kitchen. A few recipes are included:

Vegetarian Pasta Primavera
Fajitas
Risotto with Scallops or Shrimp
Lemon Rice
Grilled Vegetables

An extensive list of resources and a very handy index complete this well-researched and extremely helpful book. If you enjoy Feng Shui or decorating and organizing your home, there is a lot to enjoy and you may find the information in this book can also help with fatigue, anxiety and sleeping problems.

5 out of 5 stars Detox Your Life.......2007-04-04

No matter what your goals are, this book has the starting point for you. Learn how to make your life less toxic and get a better relationship with Mother Earth.

5 out of 5 stars Declutter, paint and detoxify.......2007-04-02

Using the principles of Feng Shui, you can create a harmonious home environment with this book as a guide.

Author Lehmeier-Hartie has you choose colors, elements and design based on your birthday. If you suffer from problems feeling disorganized or headachey at home, it could be your home is not organized properly or the flow of energy is impeded.

The author extends this tranquility to finding the right job and the right mate. Whether or not it is the alignment of elements in the home, focusing on clearing clutter in your life can only have positive effects. A very pretty book.

5 out of 5 stars Life-changing ideas.......2007-02-02

Worried about what your family is being exposed to? Are you hoping to increase your wealth or find love this year? Trying to decide on the best color to paint your walls? If you answered "yes!" to any of these questions, then Harmonious Environment is a must read.

The goal of this book is to create positive energy both in your home and your life and to be kinder to the earth. Hertie is a design consultant, chef, gardener, and healer. She shares her professional and personal experiences with the readers, i.e., homemade earth-friendly cleaning products, tasty recipes for carnivores and vegetarians, etc. She recommends that after reading this book, you apply the process in the following order:

1. Remove toxic products from your home and garage
2. Clean, declutter, clear and organize your home
3. Buy/use environmentally friendly products
4. Learn how to use place objects (furniture, mirrors, etc.) to manifest change in your life

The relationship between people and the Earth is an important part of Harmonious Environments. To remind ourselves of this interconnection, Hertie recommends bringing the natural world into your home. Some ways to do this include displaying rocks and minerals and using houseplants as pollution busters.

Hertie uses Harmonious Adjustments (TM) that combines "the best principles of Feng Shui, the application of the Four Elements based on your birth date, color, Vastu, energy work and good design." I've read a few Feng Shui books in the past, but the author's clear instructions and enthusiasm has given me the confidence to actually try this at home.

I liked how the author reminded me to use this book as a guideline but to also trust my intuition. Do what looks and feels right for you. I also liked how the Resource section listed all the suppliers, organizations and further readings mentioned throughout the book.

Even if you aren't interested in Feng Shui, this book has valuable information about becoming an informed consumer and living a more eco-friendly life.

Armchair Interviews says read Harmonious Environment and get ready to change your life!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book with tons of information.......2007-01-18

I got this wonderful book as we are moving our place of business, and wanted to make smart choices. From the first page, Ms. Lehmeier-Hartie shares her expertise in an organized, thoughtful way. The day after I got the book, I negotiated a much more logical and healthier ventilation system, and the section on colors was far and away the most organized and logical explanation I have ever seen.

Some aspects of our project are beyond our control, but I became a much more active participant. We anxiously await our new space, and know that the suggestions made here will add to the beauty and functionality of our space. I wish I could have rated this 10 stars!

The author of Two Against Hitler, Dippel follows the lives of six relatively prominent German Jews from January 30, 1933, when Hitler became Chancellor, until late 1938. The six are Hans-Joachim Schoeps, the leader of an extreme right-wing group; Nobel prize-winning chemist Richard Wilstatter; banker Max Warburg; Leo Baeck, who was Berlin's chief rabbi; columnist Bella Fromm; and journalist and editor Robert Weltsch. The thread that ties the six together is their decision to remain in Germany during the Nazi era.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars good representation of a concerned Jewish community.......2000-05-17

This book gives a good representation of what happened in the Jewish community as Hitler grew in power. This shows the transformation from a community that had little regard for a Jewish identity to being bonded together by that mere fact alone. Dippel shows the unfortunate internal struggles that prevented any full Jewish unity (from assimilation, emigration, & fighting back to denial and prejdice). It allows you to see just what was felt during a confusing time in Germany & what was being done about it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best I've read this year..........2002-12-29

This book is one of "those" for me: it brought together so many pieces. Upon finishing it, I had a holistic picture of the four elements as applied in many areas of metaphysics, including astrology and tarot, and in medicine and sacred wheels used in many spiritual traditions. Margie covers so much, from the five platonic solids of sacred geometry to chinese medicine and the tao, to archangels. She even has recipes! Her discussion of the four elements is the most in-depth and informative I've ever come across. I've been studying metaphysics for over 17 years, and this book was the one that gave me what I was missing re: fire, earth, air and water. She also discusses elementals, which I've been curious about. Her style is companionable. Her meditations are doable - and I really have trouble in that department. Do yourself a favor: get this one!

5 out of 5 stars For a Wiccan oriented look at the elements it's wonderful........2001-09-10

It is a Wiccan/Golden Dawn/High Magick look at the elements that goes into great depth. IT is not over ridden with too many spells or meditations. It gives good information to Wiccans and the like who wish to have an eclectic look at the elements. Much better than Cunningham's Elemental books.

1 out of 5 stars Talk about dry reading........2001-07-25

Yet another in a list of Fluff Bunny books. This one is so full of wannabe tree hugger information that it almost put me to sleep within the first part of the introduction. This author's writing is uninspired, unorignal, and boring. If you are into this "hippie magick", then you may like it.. otherwise pass it up for something better. Try Scott Cunnigham's excellent book on the elements if you're a wiccan and want something really worth reading on earth, air, fire, and water. Better yet, read Agrippa's work on the elements and hit it at the source!

5 out of 5 stars I really liked it.......1999-07-25

I initially pulled this book from the shelf because the beautiful cover attracted me. But I ended up buying it, because it looked so interesting.

I've found this book to be FULL of information. It makes many connections and correspondences I'd never thought of before. In some places, there's so much packed into a paragraph, that I had to read it 2-3 times to really get all that was there. I can tell this book is destined to become one of my favorite reference books. Any pagan who seriously wants to understand the sacred wheel of the elements we all work with, owes it to themselves to read this book. It's just become required reading in my training circle!

1 out of 5 stars I did not think it was that great........1999-07-19

I read these reviews and they all seemed so glowing, so I bought this book, but I was VERY disappointed. So, I came back to let others know that I thought it was poorly represented. In fact, I'm wondering who wrote these reviews? Guess I will sign mine like everyone else.

    4 out of 5 stars shadow rising.......2002-02-27

this is one of the best series of books Ive read in a long time. the events happen at a pace that makes it hard to put down. I'm a commercial fisherman,Iread alot on my down time they are enchanting enough to take me away to a different world even 125 miles out in the ocean. I highly reccomend this series to all sci-fi readers. My one and only regret is that Mr.jordan cannot produce them fast enough.then again if he did they would not be as engrosing. My eyes and mind await the tenth installment of the series "the wheel of time"

Having already read these four books and enjoyed them all, the tapes were also very good. The books were fantastic but, i could not read while i drove or did certain other tasks that required my eyes and hands now that is taken care of. I can now do just about anything and enjoy these great books. So, i do recommend reading the books but, if your a person on the go then this collection on tape is a fantastic substitute.

    Book Description

Entertaining and enlightening, bestselling author J. Stephen Lang has collected some of the Bible's most outrageous stories into one fascinating volume. From the temporary insanity of King Nebuchadnezzar to tales of many-colored coats, magnificent wheels of fire, and the rape and retribution of Jacob's little-known daughter, TALKINGDONKEYS ANDWHEELSOFFIRE is packed with such heroic adventures and bizarre situations as would rival The Lord of the Rings and Raiders of the Lost Ark.Here, J. Stephen Lang has made just under 100 of the Bible's wildest stories even more fascinating by providing readers with additional trivia and interesting tie-in facts, proving that the Old and New Testamants have enough excitement for everyone-especially those who might think that reading the Bible is boring.

5 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Way to Walk Through the Bible.......2004-12-22

If you're wondering about the book's title, yes, there really was a talking donkey in the Bible, one of the strangest stories ever told and one I wasn't familiar with till I read this book. The Bible has a reputation for being dull, but I don't think the reputation is deserved, as this book shows that the Bible is filled with fascinating people and events. Some of the stories I knew pretty well (the prophet Elijah was taken into heaven in a 'fiery chariot', which is the source of the other half of the book's title), others I didn't. If you think of the Bible as a book of dull rules, read this book, it focuses on the most intersting (not always inspiring) portions of the Book. I guess the best thing about it is that the chapters are short and easy to read, so if you know people with short attention spans (and you probably know lots of them), this book is very easy and fun to read.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book of Sermons Starters Ever - and a Darn Good Read.......2004-10-08

I pastor a church and my wife teaches the teens' Sunday school, so we are always on the lookout for sources of "ice-breakers" for sermons and Sunday school classes. This collection of odd (but also inspiring) stories from the Bible has proved to be a rich treasury for both of us. I started off a sermon recently by asking the congregation if they'd heard of the Maltese Viper. I based my sermon on this book's chapter with the same title, and I had the people on the edge of their seats. Aside from helping me in my church work, I just found these stories to be pleasant to read, leading me back into stories I'd long forgotten--Balaam's talking donkey, the "pep rally" for the goddess Artemis, the original scapegoat, the seven-day king who committed suicide by burning down his own palace... well, the list goes on, and I think people of any age will enjoy these well-told stories as much as I did. Most of these chapters are 3 pages or less, so they are perfect for some quickie reading.

4 out of 5 stars No, The Bible Is Definitely NOT Boring!.......2004-03-15

    J. Stephen Lang, author of The Complete Book of Bible Trivia has put together a collection of bible stories that he describes as "truly bizarre". The author has chosen stories that entertain and in some instances, horrify the reader. The main purpose of this book is to "put to rest" the idea the bible is a boring book of history. After each story Lang summarizes the spiritual lessons that can be obtained as a result of strange events, situations or an individual's downfall. In our "crazy" world today it is good to look back at the human experience historically, as Lang often states, there are lessons to be learned.

This book is great reading material for those who have either read or heard these stories from Sunday School or personal bible study. For stories that maybe unfamiliar, this humourous book may motivate a reader to view the facts from the bible him/herself.

5 out of 5 stars fun for the whole family.......2003-11-03

This reviewer had no plans to read this inanely titled book, but fleetingly glanced at it over coffee. About an hour or so later, I finished a most entertaining biblical reference guide that is aimed at the younger set, but adults will enjoy it as testified by my spouse and adult son who subsequently read J. Stephen Lang's terrific work. The eighty-six stories come from the Old and New testaments and provide an intriguing looks at people and events that hook the audience. How can one not be curious about the raven who fed Elijah, Cain's wife, the link between food and religion, and Jacob falling for a similar switcheroo to that he and his mother pulled on his father. The collection is easy to read, and quite entertaining while educating. Perhaps the only objection by this reviewer is portrayal of Isaac as possibly not being impacted by his near death experience as a sacrifice. Of the three founding Fathers, he is the sole introvert needing his wealthy dad to find him a woman and then it was his cousin. TALKING DONKEYS AND WHEELS ON FIRE: BIBLE STORIES THAT ARE TRULY BIZARRE is fun for the whole family.

This classic study of Shakespeare's tragedies inaugurated a new school of Shakespearean study. Professor Wilson Knight reveals design and significance where previous commentary had remained baffled.

5 out of 5 stars There is more in Shakespeare's world than is dreamnt of in previous critics anthologies .......2006-09-05

      G. Wilson Knight is one of the great pioneering Shakespeare critics. As he explains in his introduction in the essays in this work he does not speak about Shakespearean 'theatre' about all that has to do with playing the plays. Instead he reads the text, not simply in time, but what he calls 'spatially'. This means in a sense thematically, finding a unity of mood and atmosphere, of motif and meaning.
For instance in his provocative reading of 'Hamlet' he sees Hamlet as a kind of sick soul set over against the healthy world of others, including that of usurper Claudius. At Knight sees it Hamlet is the death- obsessed dark dreamer who cannot be saved for life, not even by the love of Ophelia. Knight searches through the play as a whole in order to make Hamlet a character set apart from all the others, the one whose indecision, despair, brooding are signs of his deep disturbance of soul.
In another essay in the work Knight compares this moody , despairing Hamlet with the Tolstoy who at the moment of greatest triumph and well- being fell into a depression over his sense of life's meaninglessness. Knight claims that Tolstoy did not ever really get beyond this sense of meaninglessness, while Shakespeare in Lear and other late works does.
There are also outstanding essays here on Lear, Othello, Measure to Measure.
Shakespeare like all great writers is reinterpreted and added on generation by generation. In his generation Knight made a major contribution to this. His work is still not simply readable but instructive and inspiring.

5 out of 5 stars G. Wilson Knight is BRILLIANT.......2002-06-29

Knight's theories have become commonplaces. The idea that Hamlet is a bad guy? The theories the Duke of Measure for Measure and Timon of Athens are Christ figures? All those are propounded for (as far as I know) the first time in this eloquent book. Aside from having famous theories, Knight supports his claims, which at first can seem absurd, with mountains of evidence gathered from a fine-toothed reading of the text. He never makes obvious points or fallacious arguments; he starts out by noticing fine details in the text and then draws these into a coherent, convincing whole. I don't agree with every word he's ever written, but all his words are brilliant. Knight is the best literary critic I have ever read, by a wide margin, and this may be his best book.
