These are tough times for journalism. Newsroom executives' bonuses tend to be based on their company's profit margin. Journalists are constantly jockeying for the time and space necessary to tell their stories as they see fit. Only 47 percent of Americans even read a newspaper. And Time and Newsweek--news magazines, remember?--"were seven times more likely to have the same cover story as People magazine in 1997 than in 1977."

It's no wonder that in 1997, the Committee of Concerned Journalists formed to "engage journalists and the public in a careful examination of what journalism was supposed to be." The Elements of Journalism reports the results of that study, which included 21 public forums (attended by 3,000 people), in-depth interviews with 100 journalists, editorial content studies, and research into the history of journalism. Part of what the committee members learned, they already knew. Journalism is complicated business: journalists are paid by management but work for the citizens; they tend to be self-taught (there is little evidence of mentoring and much disdain for journalism schools); and they need to be objective even when they're not impartial. This has always been the case. But the committee also detected a trend, one abundantly evident to anyone who has tried to find news on the evening TV news: "news was becoming entertainment and entertainment news."

"Unless we can grasp and reclaim the theory of a free press," warn Bill Kovach and Tom Rosenstiel, the book's authors, "journalists risk allowing their profession to disappear." Through their discussions with journalists, the Committee of Concerned Journalists defined nine "clear principles" of journalism, which Kovach and Rosenstiel explore in great detail. The first principle is, "Journalism's first obligation is to the truth." The last: "Its practitioners must be allowed to exercise their personal conscience." In between come issues of loyalty, verification, independence, and power monitoring, among others.

Invigorating reading for newsroom interns, jaded reporters, and anyone else who needs to be reminded of the rigorousness, integrity, and meaning of journalism. --Jane Steinberg

3 out of 5 stars Abstract/Strategic overview; Journalist's, not public's, perspective.......2007-01-05

This book is probably a good overview for someone new to these issues. However, for someone like me who has been interested in these issues for years, there is little here that you wouldn't have already seen in the newspaper coverage of this topic. I had hope of finding some pithy characterizations of the issues, but this book contained none that I hadn't already seen. However, for the newbie, this book does a good job at collecting and presenting them (and citing sources). And it is very readable.

My biggest disappointment was that the authors chose to exclude the issues of fairness and balance - as a person involved in events covered by the press, this is my biggest source of frustration with journalists. The most common problem is with the structure of an article: One side's position and arguments are given, and repeated, in the beginning and middle of the article, with other points of view not appearing until near the very end. When I try to talk to the journalist about the well-known problems with this structure, my comments are routinely dismissed with "But its all in there."

Note: By "fairness" and "balance" I mean what is understood by normal people and not the bizarre, discredited definitions used by journalists. Rather than try to rehabilitate these terms (a difficult task), the authors attempt, unsuccessfully, to introduce replacements (for example, "proportionality" which is presented by an unsatisfying metaphor).

My second disappointment was that the portion of the title "and the Public Should Expect" is an empty promise: The book is entirely focused on the journalist's perspective.

I did find it interesting the number of times that the authors commented that journalists were *not* trained in key aspects of their job but had to figure it out for themselves. This confirmed intuitions developed from my experience with journalists.

5 out of 5 stars Captures all important elements of journalism.......2006-08-10

After reading Lippman's Public Opinion, this book provided a good review of what has happend in recent years.

The journalism is heading for a new direction, while preserving the old core values.

No stone is left unturned in this book with regard to journalism.

4 out of 5 stars very good.......2006-02-20

I received the book in a good delay, and it was in perfect condition!

3 out of 5 stars Great finish, no start........2005-03-21

I read this book as a first year grad student studying journalism. It's an interesting read - probably the only book I read that whole semester that I actually liked. It leaves the reader with a sense of purpose and commitment to the craft of journalism.

Then I went out and start reporting in the real world. I immediately realized "Elements of Journalism" is hopelessly idealistic. The book has a great vision for where the profession should be, but no suggestions on how to get there.

5 out of 5 stars absolutely loved it.......2004-11-25

For my journalism class, I had to choose a book of merit about the media. "The Elements of Journalism" doesn't disappoint. This book takes the form of an instructional guide in that its objective does tell what journalists should be doing in order to create an effective press and what the public should expect from it. I find "The Elements of Journalism" to be of great use since it outlines what every budding journalist should follow to maintain ethics, objectivity, and truth in their work. It even describes man's history with the need for communication and a briefing of journalism's role in history. The book is written with clarity and the topics flow together. I also noticed that Kovach and Rosentiel developed many "theories" of the media-which all seem true too.

What will always stay with me is the "The Theory of the Interlocking Public"-that states that everyone has an interest and is an expert in something. We need to be knowledgeable about the realistic description of how people interact with the news in order to present information as accurately as possible so that an individual group is not drawn to an article but a WHOLE variety of people depending on their level of knowledge about the world. Good journalism targets each level. I always remember this while writing an article for the paper.

As for what citizens should expect from the press, I admired the quote "The marketplace fails if we as citizens are passive, willing to put up with a diminishing product because we have no alternative. It works only if we act with a voice and a reason." It basically means that the purpose of a press (to convey the information that people need to be sovereign) will deteriorate if the people don't take action and speak up in what they believe in and hold true.

And, I can go on and on....because this book is so full of insightful information. I recommend it for anybody interested in the workings of the media.

    Book Description

Covering every aspect of newspaper design from typography to photography, from redesign to the specifics of a design stylebook, this volume is an essential text for use in graphic journalism courses and an effective reference source for editors and publishers. The author coins the phrase Total Page Concept (TPC). By use of this term, he demonstrates the importance of placing graphic elements on a page so that they complement one another. On the TPC page, all elements mesh. Typography, photography and illustrative art are as important to each page as are thorough writing and careful editing. This scholarly text includes more than 200 examples from newspapers throughout the United States, 60 interviews and citations plus statistical tables that show how editors use various graphic elements in their publications. Divided into six sections, Elements of Newspaper Design shows how graphics and text must complement one another on a TPC page. Sections are: Basics of the Total Page Concept; Principles of Design; Building Blocks of Typography; Design Creativity; Finishing Touches; Putting It All Together.

Gary Blake and Robert W. Bly have written a straightforward, well-organized guide to writing "copy intended to sell": ads, direct mail, brochures, catalogs, press releases, press kits, audiovisual promotions, Web-site material, and the like. Copywriting is different from any other writing, business or otherwise. Redundancy that reiterates. Superlatives! "Quotation marks." Sentence fragments. That's what sells. While Blake and Bly address each copywriting task individually, there are some rules that apply across the board: focus on the customer, not the product; use a conversational, friendly tone; use simple words and short sentences; and close with a "call to action" (involving the use of a coupon, Web-site address, toll-free number, etc.). One chapter, on "power copywriting techniques," discloses how to use ingredients such as research, adjectives, testimonials, and guarantees to make your ad stand out. And remember: "If you have to choose between being clever and obscure or simple and straightforward," say the authors, "we advise you to be the latter. You may not win any advertising awards, but at least you'll sell some merchandise." (A warning to owners of Bly's The Copywriter's Handbook: while there is much original material here, a substantial part of The Elements of Copywriting is reprinted here, slightly paraphrased.) --Jane Steinberg

    Book Description

In the tradition of The Elements of Style, here is a concise handbook of the principles and practice of writing effective ads, brochures, and every other type of copy intended to persuade. It covers writing headlines and body copy as well as increasing readership and response, and goes on to provide copy guidelines for print ads, direct mail, brochures, catalogs, press releases, electronic messages, and more.

4 out of 5 stars Good Basic Copywriting Text.......2005-08-12

I read the book in 2 days and immediately found ideas that improved my current writing and editing projects. This is not a cutting edge, radically innovative book. It is a short, well organized, basic copywriting text. I'm glad I bought it.

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Copywriting Primer.......2004-01-08

With this book, Gary Blake and Robert W. Bly have written a well-organized and concise guide to copywriting. While not nearly as comprehensive as Bly's "The Copywriter's Handbook,"(which you also get if you are buying this book), "The Elements of Copywriting" is a great introduction to copywriting for most people. It covers a number of areas of copywriting: display advertising, direct mail, brochures, catalogs, press releases, press kits, audiovisual promotions, Web-site material, and more.

It quickly and deftly outlines the differences between copywriting and other writing, e.g., it's perfectly acceptable to use "And" to begin sentences in advertising copy. Blake and Bly address each type of copywriting task mentioned above individually, as well as providing more broad-based rules for copywriting: use a conversational, friendly tone; use simple words and short sentences;focus on the customer, not the product; and close with a "call to action."

This is a very concise guide to copywriting that is an excellent starting point for those wanting to learn the craft.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful content, great reference source........2002-03-17

Gary Blake and Robert Bly do a great job of bringing the core of copywriting. I find this book more a reference than something I am going to read cover to cover. Great coverage of Direct Mail and writing for the web, all around very useful book in helping my customers become more profitable - plus improve my own sales and marketing materials.

Only caveat, the paragraphs could use a bit more space between them and some other font for headlines would make it easier to read. Outside of that the content is superb!

4 out of 5 stars Nice Overview of Copywriting Areas.......2001-10-24

The Elements of Copywriting nicely explains how to write copy that sells in the most important areas/fields such as direct mail, press releases, product catalogues etc.

As a junior copywriter at an advertising agency I can recommend this book to junior copywriters or persons that are thinking of becomming copywriters. For seniors this book will probably be too general in its content. How ever the first part of the book can be used for inspiration on where to put your emphasis in your copy. And because of that it might be helpful even for seniors.

The greatest thing about The Elements of Copywriting is how the content is organized. You can read it from cover to cover or use it as a reference. I'll keep this book on my desk - it might come in handy when I'm low on ideas..

1 out of 5 stars FUNNY YOU SHOULD PLACE WITH ROY WILLIAMS BOOK.......2001-10-04

I DIDN'T ORDER THE BOOK AFTER READING THE REVIEWS AND THE TABLE OF CONTENTS AS I AM AN AVID READER OF ROY WILLIAMS WORKS. IF YOU READ HIS BOOKS HE MENTIONS "A LITTLE BIT" ABOUT HOW TO USE PRINT; HOWEVER, HIS PRIMARY FOCUS, IN MY OPINION, IS HOW TO USE THE POWER OF SOUND IN BROADCAST ADVERTISING. THE QUICKEST WAY INTO THE CUSTOMER'S MIND IS THROUGH THE EAR AND BROCA. I DIDN'T THINK I WOULD FIND THAT IN HOW TO WRITE BROCHURES, HEADLINES, ETC.

      Book Description

5 out of 5 stars Great Read, not just for latinos.......2006-12-15

Hopefully anyone who speaks spanish has a chance to read this book, it allows you to share into some of his extraordinary experiences, it also allows you to see a glimpse of what it's like to be one of many latinos that hopefully will create a certain level of tolerance on anyone who reads it.

      5 out of 5 stars AMAZING.......2006-03-02

This book is an amazing account of a man who has gone through a very distinct childhood which has shaped his current status as arguably the world's most influential latino reporter. This is a must read for everyone, whether you read it in spanish or its english version "No boarders," everyone will get something out of this book.

4 out of 5 stars Muy bueno para interesados en Temas Politicos.......2005-09-21

5 out of 5 stars Es mucho mas que una biografia.......2004-03-04

5 out of 5 stars el nuevo americano.......2003-02-16

3 out of 5 stars Mild, but not THAT bad.......2001-04-07

Whilst the other reviewers loved to thrash a decent book, I for one would like to throw in my two pennies in defense of this fine book. It's not as useful or insightful as I thought it would be, but for a beginner it contains a lot of interesting anecdotes for those who haven't really stepped into the publishing world. The section on printing and photography is very good for giving a general idea which is exactly what I needed. Not the Bible it could've been, but still worth its existence. Want something better, just buy the Chicago Manual of Style.

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad But Still Disappointing.......2000-01-05

As someone who has edited newspapers at the college level, I thought I was getting something that would give me a great reference point for a future in journalism. Plotnik's book assumes that the reader has experience with journalism but is new to editing. It is not intended to be a primer showing the would-be editor how to edit; rather, it is designed to be a guide into avoiding pratfalls that can befall a novice (or even a veteran) editor.

While I am fairly pleased with the extent of his advice that can be translated from the time he wrote the edition I am reading - 1982 - into modern times, I am dismayed that the technology he refers to is so outdated. The modern editor does not have to spend 10 minutes staring at a proof page to look at how to set type any longer thanks to technology desktop publishers have at their fingertips.

Plotnik would have been much better served if he had someone well-versed in modern publishing technology update his technical knowledge base.

5 out of 5 stars Great tool for smart editor.......1999-09-04

Plotnick's book may be a tad dated, but his insight into the process of editing and the relationships formed about editors and the rest of the publishing crew are insightful and sound. The book doesn't pretend to be an exhaustive look at the minutiae of editing, but rather to set the stage for the intelligent person to gain context on what goes into making a good editor, along with some of the frustrations along the way. Good primer for the editor's shelf. I've been in the business about 20 years and wish I'd had something like this when I started out.

      1 out of 5 stars irrelevant.......1999-08-07

Plotnik spent several pages at the start of his book glowing over how essential and perfect it is for editors needing a handbook. but upon reading it i saw it has nothing to do with modern journalism - he wrote of VDTs, stupid and irrelevant advice to reporters, and other stuff so tangential that i don't even remember what it was - nohting whatsoever about how to better edit a story. i wonder if his work would have been of any use even before computers revolutionized the profession. i think not, else i could have gleaned at least one useful thing frm the work, which i did not. i kep t waiting for him to writ e somehting relevant about editing and he never did. i returned the book it was so bad. in fairness, he may have updated his book; i read an early 80s version. but for the edition i read, one star is too generous a rating for this waste of paper.

the best book i've read on editing is a book on writing: william zinsser's 'on writing well.' if you write well, you will know bette r how to edit well. zinsser's book changed my life. go read it.

1 out of 5 stars A ripoff of Strunk and White's classic title.......1999-06-17

Thumbs down. As a professional writer and editor, I can't imagine why the publisher of this book would put the word "modern" on its cover. The book has some enduring qualities, but it refers to desktop publishing hardware as "VDTs or video display terminals" and makes no mention of the Internet.

I would advise other media professionals to wait for this book to come out on 8-track!

        Book Description

From his childhood days in Mexico, to his experience of censorship in government–owned Mexican media companies, his student years in LA, and his early beginnings as a journalist in the USA, Ramos gives us a personal and touching account of his life.

With a series of intimate portraits of the leading political figures he has interviewed over the years (Castro, George W. Bush, Chavez, Clinton) and the places he has been, he reflects on world events and how they have changed, not only humanity, but his own life.

        3 out of 5 stars Good Reading.......2004-09-16

This book reflects how an immigrant who works hard in the USA can succeed financially and professionally. Ramos has certainly proved that=--Congratulations. It is unfortunate that even though he has interviewed leaders of other countries and see how government in other countries hold back progress of their own people and yet Ramos hesitates to call USA his home. As he acknowledges Mexico made him and USA developed him...like a biological farther who has a child yet never nourishes or parents his child but the stepfather is really the "Father" because the step dad has cared, nourished the child. USA has been the step father for Ramos in many ways.

        5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2003-09-11

I truly enjoyed reading this book, Univision was always on my mom's television set and Mr. Ramos is my mom's favorite journalist, she loves him, and now I see why. Thank you Jorge for sharing your incredible story.

        5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Astonishing.......2003-01-18

This has to be one of the most astonishing and incredible memoirs of hispanics living in the United States. I loved Ramos's simplistic style, yet profound way of describing his thoughts. For those interested in journalism, this is a book to read.

        5 out of 5 stars Absolutely inspiring!.......2002-12-15

Having read The Other Face of America, I had to get my hands on Jorge Ramos's memoir. He has inspired me to pursue a career in journalism, which is why I have followed his career for years. In No Borders, Ramos gives the reader an inside look into the life of a young Hispanic male seeking the American Dream. He moved to the U.S. from Mexico at the age of twenty-five, with very little experience in the journalistic field. Twenty-years later, he is a seven-time Emmy Award winning anchorman for Univision. From his tale of how he became one of the most successful reporters to recaps of his biggest news assignments, No Borders is an inspiring memoir about a man who stopped at nothing to get to where he is today...

          Book Description

How New York's immigrants assimilated to American life through their love of popular culture.

Translating America focuses on one of the thorniest questions in American history: How do immigrants assimilate into American culture? And, how does American culture change with the their arrival?

In 1910 more than 600,000 Germans were listed in the New York City census, yet 50 years later social scientists were hard-pressed to find a trace of German culture. What happened? The conventional interpretation has been that, in the face of persecution and repression during World War I, German immigrants quickly gave up their own culture and assimilated. In Translating America Conolly-Smith offers a radically different analysis: that German immigrants became German-Americans not out of fear, but instead through their participation in the emerging forms of pop culture.

German culture did not disappear overnight; rather it merged with new forms of American popular culture: dance halls, vaudeville, nickelodeons, the films of D.W. Griffith, the music of John Philip Sousa, Cole Porter, and Irving Berlin, and even baseball games all helped German immigrants to assimilate and become German-Americans. 60 b/w photographs.
