Book is a joke.......2007-10-02
This book is supposed to help with anger management? I am open to listening to mythical stories about dudes who lived a couple of thousand years ago as much as the next guy, but in an anger management book? Sin is causing all my anger? Wow didn't know that. I do have a better idea of something that makes me angry now, religious mythology passing itself off as a self-help book. Get this book over in the religious section with the rest of the fairy tales.
I wouldn't have been so upset about this if the book had something marked on it saying that it was religious in nature. I don't normally don't read such garbage and leave that to others who do believe in such things, but to slip it in and waste my time!!! Is this how you indoctrinate people in your beliefs?
Oh well, there's plenty of other anger management books out there. I will be more careful next time I select something like this and get something actually useful.
This book owes me some stars for being such a tremendous waste of time.
I'm sure christians will get upset at hearing this, but I'm sure you'll turn the other cheek.
If you need me I'll be over here with my "Sin"
Should be in the religious section, not pyschology.......2007-07-19
The cover and description of the book do not express that Les Carter and Frank Minirth are really only interested in appealing to Christians or people who want to convert to Christianity. I look to books like this for scientific reasoning, but was greatly put off when it started quoting Jesus on page 11 (after prompting the reader to complete workbook questions on previous pages therefore making the book unreturnable.) Anyway, I think it's a shame the authors do not put "For Christians Only" on the cover so at least their book would only end up in the hands they intended.
The Anger Workbook: A 13-Step Interactive Plan to Help You... (Minirth-Meier Clinic Series).......2007-07-17
What a great book. I wish I had had this book when I was in my 20's, it would have saved me alot of family and work problems. Finally I am finding positive ways to deal with my anger and finding out why I have had such anger problems for all my life. If you have anger problems get this book. They also have one for depression and my wife went through it and it is just as awesome as this one. Don't wait any longer! Get control of your anger and depression.
Anger Workbook.......2007-06-11
Very good information. Very revealing to find anger issues buried deep inside. Christian based.
Not Great.......2007-03-21
Not the best workbook I have seen. It is not very interactive either. It also has a lot of references to religion.

Want to hear the VOICES of conservative Catholic women.... then don't read this book........2006-01-25
First of all, this is good book for Catholic feminists to understand what our conservative opposition believes and says about us, but it can also be masochistic to spend time reading this. (And don't buy it... once you've read it... you've read it so go to the library instead)
Second of all, there are very real tensions, especially for women, between traditional Catholic faith and Catholic feminist faith. These tensions deserve attention but I do not think this book presents them in a constructive way, it is more reactionary.
Third, feminists care about women, women's lives, women's choices, and women's opinions. If people are looking for a book that is more level headed and actually presents the VOICES of conservative Catholic women a book that I believe would appeal to feminists and non-feminists is "God Gave Us the Right: Conservatove Catholic, Evangelical Protestant, and Orthodox Jewish Women Grapple with Feminism" by Christel Manning. It is full of case studies and interviews with women who are strong, full of faith, and are attempting to navigate the space between patriarchal abuse and a feminism that is perceived as threatening.
Roman Catholic Reactionism.......2005-10-15
As a former Tridentine Catholic and for a short time a member of the Vatican II Roman Catholic Church, I found this book interesting and definitely a good statement of what the anti-feminists in the church are thinking.
There are definite boundaries to the definition of "catholic" and the reactionary wing of the church is unwilling to go beyond them--in fact, they don't even intend to get near them. After years of thought and prayer and struggle, both in the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox faiths, I decided to "take it outside the Church", i.e., to quit banging my head against the wall and to become a Christo-Pagan. This is one place where I do agree with Ms. Steichen: I think that the feminist and progressive elements within the Church would do better to leave and start their own faith communities. I have friends who do nothing but complain about the Church, along with the former Pope as well as the current one, yet when I have suggested leaving, they refuse to do so.
Ms. Steichen takes issue with Wiccan ceremonies being practised in religious houses. She also mentions those who are at the forefront of the drive to modernise and liberalise the Church--and many of those are in religious orders, so I would expect change to start within those communities. However, I have met religious who are definitely a part of the drive to modernise things, yet are comfortable using the prayers and ceremonies of the church.
Ironically, I recommend this book to feminists and budding feminists within the church to show them that they are not alone, that there others out there like them.
Means well, but could have used more polish.......2004-11-17
UNGODLY RAGE is an examination of feminist movements in the Roman Catholic Church by journalist Donna Steichen. A devout Catholic herself, Steichen sees feminism as a malevolent force destroying the Church, and her book intends to alert the laity to this growing but little-understood movement. My opinion on the book is mixed.
The book consists of a series of case studies in which Steichen examines an event in the Church, such as a problematic seminar, heterodox publishing, or public statements by clergy contrary to the Magisterium. The chapters are loosely linked, and figures well-known from the previous chapter are reintroduced entirely, leading to some rather annoying repetition. Some of the themes Steichen discusses are very serious indeed, and need to be countered by the Church to a great degree. She gives numerous examples of conferences being called to further involvement of women in the Church, but participants hear nary a mention of Jesus Christ and lots of talk about Wicca, Hinduism, and other Nicene Creed-denying spirituality. People who have long since lost all belief in orthodox Christianty remain in churches instead of going over to more appropriate venues such as Unitarian Universalism, with disastrous consequences. Many of the personalities mentioned in the book are still active today, remaining in the Roman Catholic Church and, by their own admission, hoping to dismantle it from within.
Unfortunately, the book is more a screed than an effective uncovering of Roman Catholic sexual issues. Often the author's criticisms seem unfocused, and while she insists on obedience to the bishops of the Church, she calls Vatican II undertaken by these same bishops a grave mistake. The book is written in a slightly sensationalistic journalistic style instead of adhering to more appropriate academic standards, though footnotes are abundant.
It is a pity that in the thirteen years since UNGODLY RAGE was published, no writers have accepted the challenge of writing a book on the same theme but in a more academic fashion and with a look at what's happening in other orthodox denominations besides the Roman Catholic Church. Though this book has its faults, it is one of the few resources available on the topic.
Half journalism, half inflammatory.......2004-05-03
Though I daresay that Mrs Steichen and I would vary greatly in both approach and emphasis, there are certain points she sets forth which are valid and basically well reported - for example, the use of Wiccan rituals by women religious being detrimental to the spiritual life, and the distortion in values that can arise from exagerrated feminism. I would agree, as well, with some (emphasis on 'some') of her assessments of particular feminist 'voices' to which she refers. Yet the journalist, who I have no doubt accurately reported some of the rituals she observed, takes a back seat to one whose highly conservative agenda brands everyone with whom she agrees with the 'demonic' iron.
For example, Steichen refers to various theologians (among them Raymond Brown and Joseph Fitzmyer, who were amongst the 20th century's best RC scripture scholars, and Karl Rahner) in the same breath as those with Wiccan emphases - and the result is so inaccurate as to be nearly laughable. Raymond Brown wrote an entire book affirming the virginal conception and bodily resurrection of Christ, with footnotes to Vatican documents on many a page, yet Steichen makes it appear that he is one of a crowd who denies these doctrines. One wonders if Steichen has actually read the works of these theologians - and, if so, if she has the sophistication to understand their analyses.
I am acquainted with the writings of some of the women with whom Steichen takes issue, and, in many cases, find them equally exasperating. Yet there is no distinction here as well. I have little patience with the feminism of Joan Chittister, for example, yet have heard her speak of the importance of the Benedictine tradition of liturgical prayer - a far cry from pagan rituals.
Steichen repeatedly refers to the collapse of the "North American" Church, and is quick to note when one who is a citizen of another land, or even foreign born, is propagating the errors she sees. It becomes highly annoying, with an effect of such a narrow view that the thesis seems to be 'the US Church would be fine were it not for these European influences' (John Paul II and Cardinal Ratzinger apparently being exceptions.) In my observation, a great many liturgical abuses and much of the deterioration in women's communities stemmed precisely from a distorted view of 'acculturation,' and an attitude that emphasis (for example) on nuns' professional achievement rather than the life of prayer was 'more American.' It is unfortunate that she does not treat of this, for it has had far more devastating effects than New Age gnosticism.
For one so devout, Steichen seems to give undue credit to the powers of evil. The idea that a curse by women who worship some sort of wicked goddess caused the defeat of a proposal by Jesse Helms (who, I believe, holds some views which would not be in accord with RC positions...) was bizarre. Steichen goes far beyond pointing out errors, to a worldview where nuns seem to be descending into witchcraft and thereby summoning evil powers.
Steichen's writing style is professional and engaging, which makes this book all the more dangerous. It seems such thorough reporting that, taken at face value, unsuspecting readers may view the works of notable theologians as heretical. There is no balance. One receives the erroneous impression that nuns would remain loyal daughters of the Church had they not obtained theological education.
As extreme as imaginable, but interesting if you're fearless.......2003-03-05
This is a difficult book to review because Donna Steichen really is one woman who will stop at nothing she believes is wrong. her conviction that during the 1970s and 1980s American Catholics were being drawn into radical feminism and goddess religion leads her to write "Ungodly Rage".
Steichen certainly has a very good grasp of Catholic teachings and, now that I feel I understand them better than when I originally reviewed this work - at least when studied in relatively practical and/or scientific terms. She certainly is right in that the teachings of radical feminism are contrary to those of traditional Catholicism. She does not consider the way in which veneration of Mary has - actually with considerable truth - been compared with that of ancients goddesses these feminists aim to revive. this fact undoubtedly explains some considerable part of the reason for the affinity between the two groups. Nor does she consider what many people - even if suspicious of the repressive nature of the Vatican's structure - admire about Catholic worship and spirituality.
Another thing she left out - badly - was the fact that even when "Ungodly Rage" was being written there was a great deal being done in the Vatica (eg against Matthew Fox) to end these trends. the way Steichen writes it, nothing was being done by Ratzinger and his aids at all. Rather she focuses on what ordinary Catholics can do - which is a very worthwile thing if one was in her position, but in this case at least looks at only one side.
Maybe I am rather harsh at this moment, but this book, for all its clarity, is arguably the most extreme work I have ever read on any topic. If you think Ann Coulter's a "pit bull terrier", read Donna Steichen.

Very helpful.......2005-04-20
I found this book to be a life saver for me at a time when I thought my 8 year old was going to harm himself or another family member. He has since been diagnosed with cyclothemic disorder but at that time he was having severe reaction to anxiety medication causing him to appear bipolar. The book helped me identify factors causing his behaviors and to seek out appropriate clinical help. I still continue to refer to this book when the going gets rough and recommend it frequently to others who have children having similar difficulties.
This Book is a True Blessing!!.......2002-04-03
I am a single mom , and both my sons have been diagnosed with ADHD. This book is truly a survival guide. It is very well written and understandable. It has answered all the questions that I had that no one else seemed to fully explain. I now have an incredibly deeper understanding of how my sons perceive this world of ours. I highly recommend this book to any parent looking for answers. It is like a bible and I am so grateful that I found it. The tips, charts, helps, and personal experiences make this book a must!!!
Parents, you can do it!.......2001-03-10
This is a wonderful book that can literally change the lives of despairing parents of children with attention problems. It doesn't just present coping strategies, it addresses the heart of the problems by exploring two main questions: how can parents move from seeing their child as an terrible trial to seeing him/her as a challenge that can be met? And how do they move from seeing only the child's behavior to understanding what's going on inside? After these two central underlying issues are addressed, parents can move on to strategies to help their child learn new behaviors, such as identifying when stresses are building, practicing relaxation and focusing techniques, and finding satisfying activities. The book also helps parents understand the strains on their marriage and their other children, and find ways to regain some peace and pleasure. I came away from this book feeling more equipped to be an appropriate teacher for my child, helping her to identify and meet her own needs, rather than another adult voice telling her to "behave properly." The book could use a little editing, but the ideas and strategies can help any parent move from feeling helpless and desperate to feeling capable of supporting, loving, and helping their child.
A Gentle Hand Reaching Out.......2001-01-06
After coming to your site today to order yet ANOTHER copy of this book, it dawned on me that I need to write a review also! I probably should just order a CASE of them next time as I am continually recommending this book to others. When you receive a diagnosis that your child has one or more of the "differences" that George Lynn writes about, it can be so frightening and you often feel hopeless and very much alone. This book is like a gentle hand reaching out to you in the darkness. He not only gives you the important clinical information you may need to move forward, but more than that, when you come to the end of the book you feel affirmed, encouraged, empowered and with the deep belief that "yes, my child may have these issues, but just look at his wonderful gifts as well!" In my work as a pastoral counselor I time and time again find mysaelf sharing this book with weary and often very frightened parents. I too know this feeling of despair as I am the mother of one of these wonderful, wild children! Thank you George Lynn for reaching out your hand to me and to my son through this healing book. You have saved our lives, and I am eternally grateful.
Full of positive, useful information........1999-10-10
Finally, a book that explains ADHD and all related disorders in one book. I appreciate the simple, easy to understand language, as well as, the techniques the author suggests. This book is the best one that I have read on the subject! A must for one's personal library!

Book Description
Nattanya Andersen's cherished career as a flight-attendant for one of the world's largest airlines careened to a halt when a jet-engine-explosion five feet away from her mid-air left her with post-traumatic-stress-disorder (PTSD). The mental health professions' apparent lack of knowledge concerning the treatment of PTSD-sufferers, and Nattanya's desire to help herself, lead her to search for empirical studies on PTSD and other health-issues and dangers facing air-crew--and by extension their passengers--on a daily basis.
In Broken Wings Nattanya documents the symptoms and repercussions of PTSD, and portrays the treatment an injured-at-work employee, in particular if ill with PTSD, can expect to receive from the employer, the Workers' Compensation Board, and the Union. Interwoven with her struggle against the system are chapters about air-rage, air-quantity and quality in aircraft-cabins; airplanes as illness-incubators; cosmic-radiation-exposure; turbulence; air-traffic-control; pilot-training; flight-phobia and anxiety, and air-crew-duty-times, all backed up by data from dozens of scientific studies. Nattanya also gives us insight into the air-crew-lifestyle, the role of flight-attendants, and passengers' on-board behavior.
But Broken Wings is not just about the aviation-industry, and it is not just dry facts and figures. It is a story about fear, betrayal and the phoenix-like rebirth of a soul from the moment of the accident to the time when Nattanya emerges as a complete - albeit scarred - person from a situation which came close to breaking her. It is an utterly compelling story, even for readers who have no interest in the airline-industry.
In light of the September 11, 2001 events and the regularly occurring aircraft-crashes and incidents worldwide leaving uncounted numbers of passengers and crew with PTSD, Broken Wings indeed makes timely and gripping reading.

Government bashing in print........2007-01-16
It is the story of an injured flight attendant (psychological injury) and her 10 years of trying to get the government to provide disability to her. At times the book bashes the Candian Government, the insurance industry, the unions and the Aviation Industry.
I read the entire book hoping that somehow all the side stories and negative comments would end in a conclusion worth reading about...but it did not.
It is just not worth your time.
This is a very good course literature for those who are studying psychology........2005-09-30
This is a very good course literature for those who are studying psychology and for Human Factors courses. The book is an excellent illustration on how PTSD can develop and get worse by bad treatment.
It was not the engine explosion, which caused the authors Post Traumatic Stress. It was firstly the poor information from the captain and his negligence to arrange a proper counseling debriefing after landing (see ISBN 0-9754818-8-6) and secondly the absolute lack of empathy from the airline years after the accident that caused and aggravated her PTSD.
The book contains a lot of very valuable information based on knowledge, reports, recorded researches and finally some assumptions with which I don't always agree, e.g. her explanation of aircraft pressurization and ventilation. The cabin air deteriorated a lot after introduction of recirculation fan. That is true, but pilots get their air from the same duct as passengers and no extra oxygen is added. We have our oxygen masks for emergency as have the cabin crew and passengers.
Read the book, but don't get afraid of flying. In 2004 no passenger was killed in airline accidents in the western world and less than 500 in the whole world.
Gunnar Fahlgren, Ret. airline captain (SAS) and Human Factors consultant.
Couldn't Put it Down - not even the third time through!!.......2005-05-26
Finally a book that spells out the truth about what being a flight attendant is all about!! Nattanya Andersen's descriptive powers made me feel like I was on that 727 with her, and she took me on her entire journey, never letting go of my attention. I have done a whole lot of reading with regard to this subject matter and in the end I have to say that this is the one book I go back to time and time again. Not only does it answer questions about PTSD, it also spells out quite clearly the dangers that all of us are exposed to while cruising at 33,000. As a frequent flier I feel that this book has really been an invaluable source of information that has greatly changed the way I travel. It has also been a great inspiration. As someone who has suffered from PTSD, brought on by an "airborne incident", I feel that this book has really influenced me profoundly.
As much as I have enjoyed the "Humorous" accounts of the flight attendant's life in such books as "Cabin Pressure", and as informative as Sandy Purl's "Am I Alive" was...I have to say that Ms Andersen's research and "Tell it as it is" style made this book well worth reading (more than once) and I have urged everyone I know to get a copy.
Brava Nattanya!!
There is a MORE cheery Flight Attendant book than this..........2005-05-01
This book is kind of a downer, especially compared to the new book I've seen at Amazon, called Flying by the seat of my pants: Flight Attendant Adventures on a Wing and a Prayer. (That author, lets you read a free chapter on her website). If you love the idea of flying around the world, like I do - it's kind of cool to read a book where the Flight Attendant loves her job.
flying drivel.......2003-02-07
This is possibly the worst book I have ever read. I think this author just wanted to quit her job and this was her way of quitting and still getting paid. I also think she must have been turned down by a lot of pilots. I don't know any, but I'm sure that if they are as crazy as they say, the MOT would have found them by now. Drinking I can believe. Crazy? I think the author is the pot calling the kettle black. Sorry, but don't waste your time

Book Description
Rage and Grace is an inspirational novel. It deals with events of the Bible days that shows God' s acts of destruction because of the sins of the people. It brings the acts of God closer to home and our lives by showing God's great powers to destroy and save lives and property still today, with the fearsome natural disaster of the present. In South Florida (Dade County Miami) Hurricane Andrew, in 1992 showed God's power at work, how he destroyed, killed and saved all at the same time. That everyone should stop using drugs, since drugs are one of our major problems and "JUST SAY NO TO DRUGS."

When Laurie Stone won the 1996 National Book Critics Circle award for excellence in reviewing, her impassioned acceptance speech describing new trends in autobiographical writing sketched a blueprint for this collection. "Memoirs of Hurt, Rage, and Desire" is the subtitle's entirely accurate characterization of eight essays written in a style that Stone dubs "post-therapeutic." What does that mean? A flinty disinclination to comfort is the most notable trait: these writers bare psychic and physical wounds most of us would hesitate to discuss with anyone but our therapist, and they disdain the easy reassurance of tabloid TV, which assumes that getting everything out in the open will make it OK. The pseudonymous Terminator's "Baby Doll," a horrific account of his battered childhood, is the collection's most disturbing entry; Stone's "Hump" is the most conventional (overbearing mother, some consensual, not-too-heavy sadomasochistic sex). Book authors Catherine Texier (Breakup), Lois Gould (Mommy Dressing), Peter Trachtenberg (Seven Tattoos), and Jerry Stahl (Permanent Midnight) are represented with shorter pieces just as bitingly candid as their full-length works. Not for the sentimental or the squeamish, these stories are compulsively readable and hard to forget. --Wendy Smith
Book Description
Close to the Bone scouts the territories of sex, the family, loneliness, the city, addiction, and AIDS, but these are not passive tales of victimization. Rather, these writers speak in voices that are unflinching, unerring, and filled with revelation.
Customer Reviews:
GREAT ANTHOLOGY OF THE PERSONAL ESSAY!.......2004-09-25
Close to the Bone is one of the best anthologies of its kind and it is a wonderful sampling of the modern personal essay. "We could all go on Oprah for some reason or other," editor Laurie Stone writes. "It's not enough that creepy things have happened, since everyone's life, prodded enough, looks like a crime scene with chalk outlines." In this collection, Stone includes authors who have found "the story in their experience."
This is the first appearance of young J.T. LeRoy (here credited as Terminator). LeRoy is the author of the autobiographical novel Sarah, about a pre-teen transvestite prostitute who hustles with his mother at West Virginia truck stops. The essay "Baby Doll" functions as a prequel to that novel.
There are other great essays by authors such as Phillip Lopate, Peter Trachtenberg, and Stone herself. Close to the Bone can be funny and disturbing by turns, but it is never boring.
Close to the Heart!.......2001-05-05
This is a book where I found a lot of great writers! This is the book that first published JT LeRoy under the pseudonym "Terminator". His story "Baby Doll" is as powerful, moving and unforgettable as his novel "Sarah" which I bought after reading this book. Jerry Stahl's story in here is genius, anyone that knows a fledgling drug addict will benefit greatly by reading Stahl's story. Anyone interested in writing that is honest, moving and inspires self-examination, this THE book to get!
Memoirs with attitude.......2000-03-20
For those who like to read and write quality memoirs, the best thing about the book was its introduction -- which makes the point that quality memoirs are "post-therapeutic" and dwell in ambiguity. Too bad too many of these memoirs fail to live up to the guides Stone set for herself.
The best memoirs here were the least sensational -- Lopate and Texier's detailed, anticlimactic stories of their fathers and families were head and shoulders above the rest. Some inclusions, like Lois Gould's, were well-written but did not really stand on their own. The worst were the most sensational -- Terminator's silly cartoon sex comedy, which sounds too fabricated to ring true. Stone's own entry is credible, but when she starts going into her own sex life, I just went into snooze-a-thon mode and flipped the pages until she started talking about human nature again. Why do these "hip" writers love sex so much and do such a bad job writing about it?
