Book Description
At the end of World War I, the German artist Kurt Schwitters dramatically broke with dominant artistic traditions by adopting collage as the primary medium for his literary and visual production. In The Collages of Kurt Schwitters: Tradition and Innovation, Dorothea Dietrich demonstrates how collages function for the artist. Characterising Schwitters’s work as the product of the deep social and political crises of the Weimar Republic, Dietrich challenges the prevalent outlook that twentieth-century art can be reduced to a revolutionary struggle of avant-garde artists against an entrenched artistic tradition. The Collages of Kurt Schwitters argues for a more nuanced view, in which revolutionary art forms are exposed as containing much that is traditional and, indeed, reactionary.
Customer Reviews:
Thoughtful and informative.......2001-10-04
A informative discussion of Schwitters work that is both scholarly and accessible. If you want critical analysis and historical perspective, then this is the book for you (it is NOT a superficial, coffee table book with pictures). Thoughtful and thought provoking. I'd recommend this book to anyone in learning more about Schwitters.
Very disappointing.......1999-10-20
I wish I hadn'd bought this book. There is very little to see

The Viewpoints Book: A Practical Guide to Viewpoints and Composition
ASIN: 0205128785 |
Book Description
Adaption-Innovation theory (A-I theory) is a model of problem solving and creativity, which aims to increase collaboration and reduce conflict within groups. A-I Theory and the associated Kirton Adaption-Innovation (KAI) inventory have been extensively researched and are increasingly used as tools for teambuilding and personnel management. In Adaption-Innovation: In the Context of Change and Diversity, Kirton outlines the central concepts of the theory, including the processes of problem solving, decision making and creativity.
Customer Reviews:
Very focused - but perhaps too much so.......2007-07-12
This is an excellent scholarly resource for those with a keen interest in Kriton's Adaption-Innovation thoery and measure. The main criticism is that the book takes way too many liberties with the work of other scholars - and it seems that the main reason for many of the distortions is to try to make Kirton's theory even more acceptable. It is a useful theory without needing to go to those lenghts.

The historical division into six major periods from colonial times to modern times offers a far wider range than most American art titles, and makes for a fine, definitive catalog.

Handbook for teaching through learning styles.......2001-02-28
For schools and teachers that are committed to implementing teaching according to the different learning styles, this is an important resource book. Detailed illustrations of various designs and techniques that will match the learning styles are given. It is important for teachers and administrators to first do the "Productivity Envrionmental Preference Survey (PEPS)" and for the students to do the "Learning Style Inventory (LSI)" which are available separately. Please note that "The inventory does not measure underlying psychological factors, value systems, or the quality of attitudes"(p.35). Table 2-1 gives a graphic overview of interpreting LSI profile. You get a good sense of the diversity among students. It is quite a daunting challenge to implement such a lerning-style based programme. The chart on p. 449 gives an overview of 4 stages. Some schools, with classrooms of 40+ students (e.g. in Hong Kong), may not have the physical space to incorporate the environmental changes required. Also where can we find in a regular school so many flexible and resourceful teachers who can creatively go beyond their usual learning and teaching styles? The awareness of the Dunns' comprehensive framework of learning styles is certainly most valuable and it helps us to be less judgemental and more respectful of individual gifts. I wonder if it would be an acceptable application to methodically stretch the whole class' learning styles, e.g., to be more visual or both global and analytic? Maybe more research can be done using these small steps of expanding one's learning and teaching styles.

In a companion to his collections Riding on a Blue Note and Faces in the Crowd, Gary Giddins has assembled a mosaic of pieces that provide an essential guide to the jazz world. Moving with ease from sweeping surveys of jazz history to precise, vivid assessments of individual performers including Thelonius Monk, the Marsalis brothers, Ornette Coleman, and David Murray, Giddins demonstrates once again why he is lauded as "the best jazz critic now at work" (Newsweek).
Customer Reviews:
giddins champions eclecticism in jazz.......2001-03-22
DaCapo does it again, bringing back into print the best jazz criticism. I read this collection of Giddins' Village Voice essays a couple of years after it was first published by Oxford in 1985. The picture of jazz it captures from the early '80s is, for better or worse, not so different from the picture today. No revolutions, just an ongoing period of recombinations and the uneasy coexistence of various styles.
Giddins is catholic in his enthusiasms, but I was and continue to be more interested in the avant-garde. In addition to swing and bop players (including Monk, from whom he took his title), here are some of the players he writes about, mainly their recordings, but also some concerts -- Cecil Taylor, Ornette Coleman, Ronald Shannon Jackson, James Blood Ulmer, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Muhal Richard Abrams, James DeJohnette, Andrew Cyrille, James Newton, Anthony Davis, Arthur Blythe, David Murray, Steve Lacy and Roswell Rudd, the William Breuker Kollektief, and Alexander von Schlippenbach's Global Unity Orchestra.
He concludes a review of the "Young Lions" performance, including the 21-year-old Wynton Marsalis, at the 1982 Kool Jazz Festival in NYC with these prophetic lines: "My intuition tells me that innovation isn't this generation's fate...the neoclassicists have a task no less valuable than innovation: sustenance. [M]usicians such as Marsalis are needed to restore order, replenish melody, revitalize the beat, loot the tradition for whatever works, and expand the audience. That way we'll be all the hungrier for the next incursion of genuine avant-gardists..." (161) Of course "this generation" cannot be reduced to the neoclassical revivalists, but to the extent that they have dominated the jazz world since the mid-'80s, Giddins had it right "on the money," in every sense of the word.
That tendency has now persisted long past the time it was (arguably) making a needed contribution. Contrary to Marsalis, the living soul of jazz is creative improvisation, not ossified composition! As of 2005, jazz is still in need of rejuvenation. Having a jazz museum at the Lincoln Center is fine, but jazz can only be kept alive outside of museums through constant innovation.

SelfDesign, a methodology developed by Brent Cameron over the past 23 years, is much more than another take-off from traditional teaching methods. It is instead a philosophy and a practice based in the belief that children are natural learners. Cameron uses individualized strategies, specific language tools, and a focus on the positive to shift the very premise on which education is built. Through his stories of learners and families he takes the reader on a tour of a new paradigm for learning-the art and science of SelfDesign.
Customer Reviews:
Education of the future (hopefully).......2007-09-11
This is a visionary and thought provoking book! I am so glad that I stumbled across it while conducting my research into holistic education at home.
Brent Cameron builds on what John Holt started. He stresses the importance of the learner being in control of their educational experience, and the freedom to choose their own projects as well as mentors. He made me appreciate that being a part of a "synergistic learning community" is really important, and I think that all homeschooling parents should make an effort to create one for their children (and themselves). Now, if we all lived in Vancouver, it would be easy- we could just send out kids to Wondertree!
This book contains an enlightening blend of theory, real life examples and practical advice for interested parents and educators (mentors). Readers are also invited to participate in online discussions and courses available on the SelfDesign website.
Thank you Mr. Cameron for sharing your knowledge with us!

Soffritto is a homey, meandering cookbook that makes you feel as if you're standing at author Benedetta Vitali's side as she sautés the minced red onion, celery, and carrot mixture for which the book is named. "Good cooking is an act of creativity," she says. "Use the recipes as indications, and trust your instincts to fill in the blanks." A simple Pomarola (Tomato Sauce with Garlic and Basil) can be prepared in just 10 minutes--the variations are as endless as your imagination. Try Fagioli (White Beans with Prosciutto, Tomato, and Sage) as a main dish or pair it with Poached Sea Bass. Finish your meal with Bonnet (Amaretto Custard). Each recipe is a story and therefore is as enjoyable to read as it is to follow. Depending on your palate, some recipes may be better off as stories than as dinners, as evidenced by Ragu con Colli Repieni (Meat Sauce with Stuffed Chicken Necks). --Dana Van Nest

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful book with errors in the recipes.......2002-12-01
We purchased "Soffritto" as soon as we learned that Benedetta Vitali had published her own book. We also signed up for her one-week course at Zibbibo in Florence at the same time.
Before we left for Florence, we made the arista at home following her recipe in "Soffritto." We had terrible results; the meat was not cooked and gray, not at all like the beautiful photograph of a browned, crusty arista in the book. We decided to take the book with us to Florence and ask her about it. When we showed Benedetta the book, she told us that the recipe was wrong. Subsequently, we looked through other recipes, comparing the instructions in the book to the methods we used in her kitchen, and once again, she informed us that the instructions in the book or quantities were wrong. We now have a copy of "Soffritto" that has been marked-up by us with corrections.
I'm afraid that Ten Speed Press, otherwise a reputable publisher, has not been fair to Benedetta. The emphasis on the production of the book was on the fabulous photography and layout, and not on testing and copyediting the recipes.
I hope that Benedetta has better fortune in the future; she deserves it.
Beautiful Taste of Tuscany.......2002-10-10
I blame it on my husband, Walter. ...
He made me buy another Italian cookbook. But, is it fair to call "Soffritto" just another Italian cookbook?
"Soffritto: Tradition & Innovation in Tuscan Cooking" ... authored by Tuscan restaurateur Benedetta Vitali, is like a respite in Tuscany between two beautifully illustrated covers. The artwork by Antonio Andreucci, in fact, initially attracted Walter, but the contemporary, yet authentic recipes and cooking suggestions won my admiration. Cary Wollinsky's color photographs of Tuscan vistas, Florentine street scenes, food artisans, and restaurant dishes complete the appetizing volume.
Vitali, a lifelong Florentine, is the co-founder and former partner at the famed trattoria Cibreo. Now, she cooks at her own country restaurant Zibibbo, emphasizing fresh produce from the area's small farms and gardens. Guess where I'm dining on my next trip to Florence?
By the way, soffritto translates as "under fried." A sautéed medley of aromatic vegetables, soffritto is the flavoring cornerstone of many Italian dishes.
Soffritto=taking time to make good food.......2002-08-20
You would have to be a pure Tuscan to really appreciate this book to the fullest. Some of the parts of the recipes could be confusing....or there are instances where you have to use ingredients that she does not define what they are or where to find them. I would not purchase this book unless you are really serious about spending time, money, and confusion for this product....
Beautifully produced, excellent recipes.......2002-04-03
I recently purchased both Soffritto and A Tuscan Seduction. They couldn't be more different books. Soffritto is full of beautiful photographs and is well laid out; it's a very well produced book, and the recipes are fantastic! If you're going to buy one Tuscan cookbook I highly recommend this one.
For the love of eating........2001-12-30
Benedetta Vitali begins her book by asking, "Who gives a damn about cooking?" Her book will leave you no doubt about the fact that she not only adores cooking but considers it essential to the sensuous lifestyle of rural Tuscany. Benedetta teaches us how the love of eating good food can bring out the best cook in each of us.
