The latest in safety management.......2006-12-09
Resilience engineering is the new field for anyone interested in safety management and has found that existing methods have run out of steam. It provides ways to manage safety proactively (without having to wait for bad events to analyze and then fix) and broadens the view of what should be looked for in root cause investigations. It applies to all sorts of technologies, not just high hazard ones like nuclear power.

A Useful "Introduction to Risk Analysis".......2001-04-02
This introductory book covers an unusually complete list of topics for such a complex subject. The first three chapters (Risk Analysis; Functions, Models and Uncertainties; and Regulation)are perhaps the most valuable. They cover the basics of risk analysis, defining essential terminology and concepts as they go. Risk is defined on page 1 as "the probability of a future loss", and this definition is applied consistently throughout. It is highly useful for prospective risk assessment, although -- as the authors acknowledge -- it is not a universally accepted definition. By contrast, *retrospective* risk assessment concepts (such as attributable risks calculated for litigation)and definitions that attempt to combine probability of a loss event with the probable severity of loss if it occurs (e.g., F-N curves and risk profiles) receive relaively little attention.
The discussion of ethical systems in regulation is welcome and illuminating. Formulas and numerical expressions throughout the text are kept elementary and the authors develop them carefully, assuming little more than high school algebra as a prerequisite.
Introduction to Risk Analysis follows the tradition of dividing the field into three major components: assessment, management, and communication of risk. It explains (without endorsing) the famous Red Book and Presidential Commission paradigms. The authors are careful to distiguish between risk analysis and processes of safety assessment and public health advocacy.
The ten chapters after the three introductory ones cover risk assessment(exposure assessment, dosimetry, extraction of potency estimates from epidemiology and toxicology data, risk characterization, comparative risk, and ecological risk), risk management, risk communication, and case studies.
The book emphasizes environmental and health applications as its major case material. Given the extensive use of risk analysis by federal regulatory agencies, this emphasis should be interesting and helpful to a wide audience of students and practitioners. While most of the text is devoted to chemical risks, the principles explained in the book apply broadly to other areas of applied risk analysis such as infectious diseases, radiation hazards, insurance, and financial and engineering risks.
The relatively sophisticated and detailed methods and models of risk in modern finance and other areas are not covered. Such details would be appropriate for a second course in risk analysis. This introduction provides general concepts and frameworks that may be useful in many applied areas but it can only introduce many topics and areas (e.g., decision-analytic approaches) that invite further study in a follow-up course or book.
The easy style and broad coverage make reading the book attractive. It is to be hoped that the authors follow with a second book for those whose appetites are whetted by this stimulating introduction to the field.

Book Description
Risk management is a decision-making process which considers political, social, economic and engineering factors with relevant risk assessments relating to a potential hazard in order to develop, analyse and compare options to facilitate the selection of the optimal regulatory response for safety from that hazard. Rapid technological developments, organisational changes and increased demand for efficiency have all influenced the vulnerability of our society. As a result, safety and risk management is becoming an increasingly important field.
Risk Management with Applications from the Offshore Petroleum Industry presents an in-depth discussion of some fundamental principles of risk management, related to the use of expected values, uncertainty handling and risk acceptance criteria. A decision framework for risk management is developed that provides a structure for the classification of risk decision problems and a procedure for the execution of the related decision-making processes. Several examples from the offshore petroleum industry are included to illustrate the use of the framework, but it can also be applied in other areas.
With the inclusion of a risk management framework designed to achieve better decisions and therefore more desirable outcomes,
Risk Management with Applications from the Offshore Petroleum Industry is a valuable resource for practitioners in the industry, engineering managers and regulatory authorities. Graduate students and researchers in risk management will find this book a comprehensive reference.

Book Description
This new text reflects Bill Kinney's experience on the special committee of assurance services, The Elliot Committee. The book is not designed to train students to be auditors. Instead, it has a strategic orientation and is intended for future managers, bankers, investment bankers, analysts, investors, IT consultants, and practicing CPAs. It is unique in that it builds upon related courses in finance, strategy, operations management, information technology, and financial and managerial accounting. There are two broad objectives of the book: 1. To introduce business students to the use of auditors and internal control to run a business better by lowering the costs of capital, production and distribution. 2. To assist accounting students by integrating their knowledge of financial and managerial accounting, information technology, and business strategy with the role of professional assurers.

Book Description
This volume is intended to stimulate a change in the practice of decision support, advocating an interdisciplinary approach centred on both social and natural sciences, both theory and practice.
It addresses the issue of analysis and management of uncertainty and risk in decision support corresponding to the aims of Integrated Assessment. A pluralistic method is necessary to account for legitimate plural interpretations of uncertainty and multiple risk perceptions. A wide range of methods and tools is presented to contribute to adequate and effective pluralistic uncertainty management and risk analysis in decision support endeavours. Special attention is given to the development of one such approach, the Pluralistic fRamework for Integrated uncertainty Management and risk Analysis (PRIMA), of which the practical value is explored in the context of the Environmental Outlooks produced by the Dutch Institute for Public Health and Environment (RIVM).
Audience: This book will be of interest to researchers and practitioners whose work involves decision support, uncertainty management, risk analysis, environmental planning, and Integrated Assessment.

Customer Reviews:
Expensive textbook-- but a genuine contribution to the field.......2007-10-15
I was dismayed by the low quality of the binding and general production values of this book. The cover binding broke in my first half hour of gentle and practiced use -- I have been handling textbooks as a graduate and undergraduate for nearly 20 years, and I know how to handle a book. The low quality is outrageous given its price of over 100 dollars. One has (sadly) come to expect some price gouging in the marketplace of advanced academic textbooks; however the least such pirates should do is to provide decent quality and production values in their overpriced wares.
On the other hand, this text seems to me to be practically indispensable in its coverage of the mathematical underpinnings of a part of Systems Engineering which has grown greatly in prominence in the past decade or so--That is, risk management. The book is pretty chaotic and appears hastily thrown together from recently published papers and other "young" sources. But (I believe) one has to look past some of the shortcoming and acknowledge that it contains some very valuable material, presented by one of the genuine pioneers in the field.
Disappointing.......2005-02-22
When used as a graduate level textbook, this work places extreme demands on the student. The lack of simple examples to explain foundation concepts places the student at a disadvantage from the start. The summary examples at the end of each section seemed to be confined to the author's research work and leave the reader more puzzled than enlightened. The endless stream of acronyms is initially annoying, but then becomes almost comical as the experienced reader (ER) becomes more accustomed to the practice. The text is a good resource for anyone specifically interested in risk management of water resource projects. For the rest of us, we'll have to look elsewhere.
Unblushing Narcissism/User Unfriendly.......2001-01-19
The author spends a great deal of time describing his models and methods (referred to by highly forgettable acronyms) as if they were standards of practice. The writing is not easy to read and the organization of the material and poor indexing do not facilitate use as a reference. A lack of problems and exercises (as well as the use of non-standard terminology) makes the book hard to use as a classroom text.
There are much better book available that cover this material.
A MUST OWN/READ BOOK!.......2000-07-13
The book contains many modern risk analysis tools not found in other books of its kind. What I like with the book is that it presents very sound and meaningful challenges to many traditional risk methods and provides alternative techniques to correct these shortcomings. The examples are practical and easy to comprehend. I hope that the future editions shall include exercises (or problems) to serve as mechanism to further hone the understanding of the students (or any readers of the book).
