5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended and extremely useful.......2007-08-16

This book is a fantastic resource for Business Analysts and Project Managers alike. I've recommended this book to several of my contemporaries, and use variations of many of the tools discussed in the book. If you've ever had a creative block on how to demonstrate good analyses, this set of tools will provide you with the spark you need.

5 out of 5 stars A Practical "Goldmine".......2006-05-11

If you're a project manager, this is one of those invaluable resources to add to your personal "toolkit".

This is a very practical reference book to keep close to your workspace. It contains more than 50 tools you can incorporate into your practice.

When that moment arrives in the project where one of your managers demands some additional piece of information presented in a particular way (as Murphy's Law describes - always at the busiest, most hectic, time), and perhaps it's one of those things you've never personally done before ...

Don't panic, just reach for the "Toolbox".

Each tool is described clearly, most including a table, diagram, or sample of the tool, along with instructions as to best practice use of the tool, e.g.:

o When to use it

o The best place in the project life cycle to use it

o Its benefits (in case you need to "sell" its use within your organization), and

o Advantages/Disadvantages - enabling you to make smarter choices among the tools, and more effective application of the one you select

One suggestion for future editions: I'd like to see more correlation of these tools with the Project Management Institute (PMI)'s PMBOK - both in terms of consistent language and project phasing. (The author does include a short appendix that attempts to do some of this.)

Notwithstanding, I still consider this book a valuable resource for my practice.

5 out of 5 stars Finally we have a ToolBox in one peace.......2005-03-24

Traditionally, project management tools and techniques have been seen as vehicles for reaching an objective or, more specifically, a project deliverable. However, most project management literature just describes individual tools and, at best, loosely gathers them into a quasi-toolbox to aid the project or program manager in doing the job more effectively. Thankfully, the business community finally has Project Management ToolBox by Dragan Z. Milosevic, not just another review of available tools and techniques, but the most comprehensive text ever published on the subject. The author makes a strong case for the need for a more systematic and pre-constructed project management toolbox, one that is of significantly more value than the simple sum of its individual tools.

Within the book, Milosevic develops a new role for project management tools and the toolbox in three distinctive ways. First, the book provides a clear roadmap for how to deploy and customize each tool depending on the specific project and company environment. Second, the book goes beyond individual tools by offering a more effective approach, i.e., constructing a toolbox, unique to an organization, which gathers together a predefined set of tools, thus supporting not only individual project management activities and deliverables but also the complete project management process. Finally, the book spells out how to customize the toolbox. Constructing a generic project management toolbox has value, but customizing it to fit a company's competitive strategy significantly enhances that value.

The book content is clearly and logically organized by project management process - initiating, planning, implementing, and closing - and then by practical applications. This helps users locate tools according to use, i.e., to support one or more specific deliverables in the project management process. Also, it reinforces the applications aspect of the toolbox for a standardized, company-specific project management process.

In summary, the Project Management ToolBox is not just the resource for a collection of project management tools and techniques. It offers an extensive set of tools that goes beyond the limits of generic domains and also takes the guesswork out of when and how to use them in order to support the project management process and to deliver concurrent projects as dictated by a company's strategy for competitiveness and profitability. It also describes how to link project goals and practices and the organization's mission, and it offers much value to managers of organizations of any size or endeavour. In short, it is a must-have book for the project manager.

5 out of 5 stars "Project Management Toolbox" Helps Win Projects!.......2004-06-29

I don't share many of my consulting "know-how" secrets, but in this case I will, because I think the field of PM will benefit from the ideas presented in this book. After working 20 years in the consulting and project management field, I felt I was as knowledgeable as one could be about managing projects. Then one day, I came across Dragan's PM ToolBox. WOW! Every page is an eye opener. And this book really is a toolbox because its filled with detailed examples, report layouts, checklists, and figures which I have personally incorporated into my projects management and documentation. And those work examples have helped me win additional PM business many times over.

If you think this is just another "Here are the PM process steps" book, then click on by. But if you do, you will miss out on the chance to reach a higher level of excellence in the field of project management that will set you apart from the rest.

Thanks Dragan for a job well done!!

5 out of 5 stars Put This Book on Your Desk, Not on Your Bookshelf!.......2003-07-22

Prof. Milosevic's Project Management Toolbox is to the practitioner of Project Management what the Physicians' Desk Reference is to practitioners of medicine. As the name appropriately implies, this book contains just about every tool and technique one can imagine to be used to manage, and assess projects effectively. But not one or two tools for every phase of a project, but several -- or to quote a cliche -- "a tool for every occasion".

Sound project management techniques are clearly described, substantiated by research, and presented in an easy to understand format. But Milosevic goes even further -- he details how to use each tool, when to use each tool, and when the use of a particular tool may not be appropriate. He even goes so far to present comparisons (pros and cons) of comparable tools (complete with sample form templates that can be put to immediate use), so that the project manager reading the book can select the most appropriate tool or technique to use for his/her particular project and/or organizational environment.

The book is organized logically, and in such a way that after you read the first chapter (which explains the theory & structure of the book), it isn't really necessary to read the book sequentially to put the concepts to practical use.

Whether you're a seasoned project manager, or a manager without much practical experience managing projects, you'll find this book useful and informative. Not merely from an academic point of view, but from a practical one as well.

That's why I recommend that you don't put the book on your bookshelf. Put it on your desk and you'll use it constantly to resolve immediate project management issues, as well as serving as an indispensable project management desk reference.

5 out of 5 stars Informative, Useful, and Easy to Understand.......2006-11-09

Ms. Burrell does an excellent job of providing an informative yet concise look at the complex business of rental property management. This book is a must read for novice investors as it allows one to enter the business with eyes wide open - aware of pitfalls and precautions that can be taken to protect the investment. Alternatively, there are so many forms, examples, techniques, and tricks for the experienced manager that it is a great read for them as well. Truly a great resource for any RPMS library - or toolbox, as the case may be.

5 out of 5 stars Make Yourself a Professional.......2006-11-02

I have a few rental properties that I've managed myself over the years, with some success, but I was looking to do better and acquired Jamaine Burrell's book to get some pointers. Her book, The Rental Property Manager's Toolbox does the trick!

The "Toolbox" has all the advice, tips, forms, and sample letters that one could possibly need to make the transition from an "amateur" rental property manager, like me, to a professional. I can see a number of areas in which I have not taken the best approach in the past (especially regarding unsupervised children) and believe that, following Burrell's advice, I can not only be a more effective manager but make more money too.

The book covers all the bases, including financial and legal issues, property acquisition options, advertising, finding and screening potential tenants, tenant problem and complaint management, and property sale, and also includes a CD with all of the forms discussed in the book. This is a great resource for anyone intending to get into property management or for anyone, like me, who has been managing properties without the benefit of professional advice.

5 out of 5 stars Avoid unnecessary hassles, buy this book!.......2006-10-13

This book is a great resource for rental property owners and managers, whether this is your first project or your fiftieth. "The Rental Property Manager's Toolbox" has everything you need to be successful in owning or managing your own rental property.

This book will teach you tips and tricks for purchasing rental property, handling legal and tax issues, dealing with tenants, maintaining properties, and even selling properties if need be. Easy to read large type and conversational format ensure that the information is as clear cut as possible. For further clarity, Burrell provides a comprehensive glossary of terms. The easy-to-use table of contents and full index make searching for that special tidbit of information a breeze. Burell also includes a list of resources such as property management companies and several rental property owners.

Included with this book is a companion CD-ROM that contains useful forms in both MSWord and PDF format. The CD runs itself, so no technical knowledge needed.

5 out of 5 stars A Rental Management Must.......2006-10-05

This book is written for those who are currently involved in the search for and ownership of rental property. The chapter dedicated to acquiring rental property covers financing and loans, various types of mortgage loans, other types of finance, and what to look for during a pre-purchase inspection. The chapter also stresses the importance of finding the right real estate agent, lawyer, accountant, and financial advisor.

Also included with the purchase of the book is a CD-ROM featuring pre-written forms, agreements, letters, and legal notices. Samples of the documents are also included in the book, such as a tenant information letter and a rental agreement violation letter. Legal documents are often intimidating and difficult to understand in one reading. I found the inclusion of these documents allowed me to review, research, and understand each document at my own pace.

The information presented in this book will allow a rental property manager to become pro-active rather than reactive, preventing small problems from becoming sticky situations. I recommend this book to anyone involved in the rental property management industry interested in simplifying and streamlining their business.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, well-written, and useful guide.......2006-08-22

Did you know that December is the worst month to rent property? And that the best months are June and July? If you are a property manager, The Rental Property Manager's Tool Box is an essential reference and serves as a powerful tool in your management belt!

The Rental Property Management's Tool Box is a highly readable and comprehensive guide to successful property management, whether employed by a firm, self-employed, or anyone thinking of starting a career in the lucrative field of property management. Useful case studies serve to further bolster the well-researched information explained in the chapter.

The ten chapters of this book extensively cover the course of managing property, beginning with a thorough explanation of the role and function of property management. The book provides a current and historical definition of property managers and its place in the field of real estate. A special mention is made on the professional stature of managers in the field, as well as professional associations that wield great influence on the profession.

While the responsibilities of the property manager are discussed in great detail, The Rental Property Manager's Tool Box does a superb job of explaining the legal, financial, and marketing responsibilities that fall on the property manager's shoulders. Though not always in the property manager's purview, a conscientious property manager develops these skills in order to yield the maximum investment return on rental properties.

Chapter 7 enumerates the many contractors and service providers that a property manager encounters in his career, and discusses many ways to cultivate special relationships with all. Two substantial chapters are devoted to tenants--how to identify viable tenants, and what to do when tenants become problematic--are especially useful for anyone that deals with rental property.

User-friendly in nature with easy to read text and layout, the book is also illustrated and includes a very useful glossary, providing over fifty pages of property management terms as well as an extensive selection of sample rental agreements and most commonly-used forms. They are easily reproduced as a handy CD is provided as part of the book package. The book also has an easy to use index, providing quick access to the book's range of subjects and topics.

4 out of 5 stars What To Do When You've Gotten Past No.......2002-07-27

This book describes and demonstrates, with various case studies revisited throughout the book, a number of intermediate negotiation concepts. Readers with experience in negotation will find themselves looking up from time to time saying, "Oh, that thing has a formal name!" For example, the tendency of one party to discount or ignore conciliatory overtures from the other side is called "reactive devaluation." Labelling the concepts isn't necessarily of any use in the throes of a negotiation, but can be useful as a guide for analysis, and it was very interesting.

Not as simple as _Getting to Yes_, on which it obviously builds (I think all books about negotiation have to use the term "BATNA" to have any credibility these days), nor yet as complex as _Beyond Winning_, this book does in fact offer a "toolbox" of strategies for the negotiator's use in analyzing a situation and maximizing the likelihood of obtaining a desired outcome.

Of particular note is Watkins's emphasis on identifying and analyzing the interests of multiple players, which is more often encountered in the real world than the one-on-one situations more frequently used as examples by negotiation authors.

William J. Altier believes that many companies fail because their leaders don't know how to think objectively. The Thinking Manager's Toolbox is Altier's front-office prescription for right thinking. He writes, "In medicine, in flying, in golf, it's the knowledge of the processes involved and the skill and experience built up by continually using them that separates the leaders from the also-rans. The same is true in business, in government, in teaching, in every profession." The book is a manual for developing a set of "thinking tools" for making choices, defining steps, timing decisions, preventing errors, and finding the root causes of unexpected change. Say you're a manager of a plant under expansion--Altier shows ways to uncover potential problems and nip them before they develop. He loads the book with written exercises, advice for teams, and step-by-step examples for planning. The Thinking Manager's Toolbox is sometimes highly technical, but provides key advice for managers looking to make the right decisions. --Dan Ring

Book Description

In this indispensable book, a widely experienced business consultant provides a complete set of analytical tools essential to successful trouble-shooting, effective planning, and making better decisions faster, more confidently, and more often. How can you help your company solve a problem in just a few days that's been plaguing managers for three months? How can you bring a room of executives to a consensus on a critical decision that the CEO and his committee have been wrestling with for years? Of course, this is easier said than done. Indeed, not a week goes by without a major business media story about a company that has fallen on hard times and an executive that has resigned for "personal reasons." The root of the failure is usually ineffective decision-making processes, and ultimately, bad decisions. In The Thinking Manager's Toolbox, veteran consultant and renowned business thinker William J. Altier cogently presents the underpinnings of successful thinking processes and their applications, drawing on practical, real-world experiences. The first section explores the fundamentals of thinking, change, and the critical role that sound thinking processes play in effective problem solving. The second section, your basic toolbox, develops five, in-depth fundamental thinking processes. And a third section, the advanced toolbox, develops more specialized applications for creative problem solving. Here then is a valuable primer for anyone, whether a middle manager or a CEO, seeking to solve problems and make better decisions more efficiently. The Thinking Manager's Toolbox is an invaluable resource for those seeking to develop the fundamental thinking processes necessary to perform with excellence.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A primer for those who normally "go with their gut"!.......2001-04-13

This book is an excellent primer on decision-making and problem-solving. It is especially relevant to those who normally rely on intuitive processes and fail to recognize the value that can be added by a formal decision process. The author makes a great case for the use of more formal processes and backs it up with his own experiences with business decisions.

When I read The Thinking Managers' Toolbox, the innovative framework (the organization of the toolbox) jumped out at me. The author's years of experience in helping people and organizations make decisions and solve problems shines in his presentation of a method to choose the right tool for the right problem. But the author goes beyond the organization of the toolbox into a lucid presentation of some of the tools that have worked well over the years. The author explains these tools in a readable manner that can enable the reader to apply them almost immediately.

Great book! A must read for anyone who makes decisions or who has problems (if you can read this you're included).

5 out of 5 stars Do you want to see people actually solve problems together?.......2000-11-23

If you would like to see people actually solve problems together, then get this book and use the techniques Bill Altier describes. As a consultant who uses the tools described here, I can verify that they work. The thrill never ceases to watch a group of diverse people - from different groups and levels of an organization - learn that they can, in fact, work together, that among them they have the knowledge and creativity to solve problems and develop strategies.

For people who are resistant to have a team attack a problem because meetings are unproductive, this book will show you that it is the way the meeting is run that is not productive. It is the thinking process that gets the result, whether for an individual or a group, and this book shows how much better that result can be from a group.

This is not a "light-reading" pleasure book, but it is well worth the effort. It gives a great deal of detail on why and how the tools work and how to apply them. If you are willing to wade in and try these techniques, you will be surprised at how much better at problem solving both you and your people are. They may even find they like working together.

5 out of 5 stars the thinking manager's toolbox.......2000-10-15

If you read the book after you've worked with him - you know he's right on the money in the real world. These are not hypothetical "what ifs". When you do what the man says your chances of success are dramatically increased.

5 out of 5 stars A Practical Primer on Problem Solving and Decision Making.......2000-10-14

The operative words to describe this book are practical, relevant and readable. Useful for anyone who cares about making good decisions and dealing with managerial and leadership issues in a straight forward, no nonsense fashion. More than a reference-this book will change the way you think about change and how to lead it. It is a book for people to read, regardless where they are in the managerial hierarchy and ought to be used on a daily basis.

5 out of 5 stars Great Approach.......2000-01-23

I read this book and walked away with new ideas that can be used immediately. The book challenges traditional thought and gives solutions for us to use. As a manager, I find that extremely helpful.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best!.......2004-03-13

This is one of the best finance/accounting books I have read. For practicing generalists, this book is right on target -- not too detailed, but detailed enough. What's more, it's excellently written! My only criticism is that the title is somewhat misleading -- alot of topics other than "cost management" are covered by the author. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Easy to read with great examples.......2001-08-09

I really enjoyed reading this book. By far, it is one of the best I've read in the field of cost accounting. Lianabel does a great job explaining the concepts and bringing them to life with examples. By the way, if you're interested in ABC/ABM, Tom Pryor's book called "Using ABM for Continuous Improvement" is also a great book with lots of examples.

5 out of 5 stars A great holiday gift for everyone at work! READ THIS BOOK!.......2000-11-21

Lianabel Oliver's book is an excellent simple book for managers and yes the general public! This book has helped understand the budgets the Administrator prepares in our office very year in terms of the importance of allocating effort and money to the continuously changing needs and demands of our work. It has also helped in formulating the right questions when I read the audit reports, budget projections, and income balance statements as a member of several board of directors.

Practical questions are introduced in each chapter and the analyses tools to deal with them are provided in both a simple and a more complex manner. The complex concepts are extremely well explained. Someone like myself, with no formal financial background could understand the concepts and reason through the chapters. One of the most amazing aspects of the book is that it draws on the very vast experience of the author with concrete examples that illustrate the points she is making and shows the various paths that one might take --the good and the bad. Showing the bad choices one can make and how to solve the problems this creates is seldom found in professional literature.

This book should be required reading for business people in general but most importantly for those businesses that deal directly with costumers. For example, chapter 8 will show both how to effectively measure the financial performance of these people-related businesses and how to improve the quality of service (cost management).

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Toolbox for Managerial Accounting.......2000-09-27

"The Cost Management Toolbox" is an excellent reference book, being a very useful and practical tool for accounting and non-accounting professionals. I use it very often for day to day managerial accounting situations in which the concepts presented by an experienced professional as Lianabel Oliver are very helpful. It is very easy to understand, and its examples are clear and concise.

5 out of 5 stars A very good reference book for non-accounting person.......2000-05-06

I find this book terrific, as my current work involve costing and I don't have any accounting background. It tells me the very logical way to know the how the cost really count-on. I do recommend it to any person who want to know costing more deeply.

The Senior Manager's Toolbox is the manager's guide to applying management engineering. Recipe-book training makes cookie-cutter managers. This work is not built on techniques, but on recognition of management as a performance effort that generates value through its impact on others. The resulting vision supports a consistent application of established efficiency principles to the work of management. Traditional efficiency applications multiplied what a production manager could accomplish. These new applications are similar tools for general and administrative managers. Engineering provides the higher-level manager with vision and performance focus, and deeper appreciation of existing management lore. With this technical support, a manager can apply existing management skills to maximize impact on organizational performance. All that efficiency engineering did for production is now available for the work of management and internal support. Organizational and office-work metrics; structure and process modeling and analysis; vertical division of responsibilities and authorities; these are all brought together into a coherent understanding of effective and efficient management. And all these are keyed back to the origin of management giving a sense of balance and completeness that is not available from any other source. It even incorporates the necessary understandings that promote the welfare and advancement of the career manager. When you close the cover of this book, you will be more effective at gaining results through organizations; and you will know that you are.

          Book Description

A stand-alone working document, Stormwater Effects Handbook: A Toolbox for Watershed Managers, Scientists, and Engineers assists scientists and regulators in determining when stormwater runoff causes adverse effects in receiving waters. This complicated task requires an integrated assessment approach that focuses on sampling before, during, and after storms. The Handbook supplies assessment strategies, sample testing and collection methods, and includes illustrative figures and tables. The authors introduce an innovative design that can be tailored to address a wide range of environmental concerns, such as: ecological and human health risk assessments, water quality or biological criteria exceedences, use impairment, source identification, trend analysis, determination of best management practices, stormwater quality monitoring for NPDES Phase I and II permits and applications, and total maximum daily load assessments. They provide case studies to illustrate the effectiveness of this approach and the data that can be compiled. Containing reviews of emerging technologies that hold promise for more effective receiving water evaluations, this book gives you detailed information on selecting methods and carrying out comprehensive evaluations. It includes guidance for the experimental design measurements, as well as standard and advanced statistical methods for data evaluations. Despite the complexity of stormwater management, successful and accurate assessments of their impact are possible by following the integrated approaches described in Stormwater Effects Handbook: A Toolbox for Watershed Managers, Scientists, and Engineers.
