5 out of 5 stars Project management.......2007-10-23

The book is well structured (format, subject areas etc.), covers the key areas that are related to Project Management and provides a good balance of text and graphics that makes learning easier.

3 out of 5 stars Good but not great.......2007-10-10

I have been thrown into a project management position at my job and procured this book to "brush up" on the technical aspects of project management (planning, networks, risk, scheduling, etc). The second half of this book was a great source for that information. However, the first half of the book I felt was pretty much useless for anybody who has worked in any level of management in the business world. Topics like management functions, staffing teams, and organizational structures are not specific to project management. I may have misunderstood the scope of this book when I bought it, but I felt that the first half of it was wasted on topics that anyone with business sense would already know.
I also found that the book didn't provide the typical bold-face terms with definitions following that I'm used to in a textbook. The text will often list several different definitions for key terms. There's also a lot of lists in this book, which I found to be at times detrimental to the point it was trying to present.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-10-07

This is an excellent reference book on Project Management. If you want to read a book on PM in addition to PMBOK Guide, this is the book. There is lots of good stuff in it.

5 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive PM textbook and excellent study gude for the PMP.......2007-10-03

I will have to respectfully disagree with the reviewer who stated this book was not good for preparing for the PMP. Though I will have to admit that this depends on how extensive you want your PMP preparation to be as well as if throughly learning the subject of project management is more important than just passing the PMP. If this is the case, then this book will exceed these expectation on all counts.

On the structure and contents of the text, it has 23 chapters whereupon the first 10 chapters delve into the basic structure and organizational behaviors that create a need for project management. In a sense, these chapter deal with the "soft" issues in project management, since the success of projects depends on the people who work on them and the stakeholders and customers who support and drive the project initiative. As Kerzner states, "these first ten chapters are needed to understand the cultural environment for all projects and systems". For those preparing for the PMP, chapter 3 titled "Organizational Structures" gives an in depth exposition of the types of organizational structures such as functional, matrix, and projectized that you will need to know for the PMP exam. You can see where much of what is in the chapter no doubt influenced the PMBOK.

Chapters 11-20 go into the heart of project management such as planning, scheduling, cost control, estimating, procurement and quality. These chapter are indeed "hard-core" project management tools and techniques that are systematically discussed in depth. But this is where much of the meat of project management is discussed and where all the major PMP exam subjects are covered. Particularly relevant are these chapters:

11 - Planning
12 - Network Scheduling Techniques
14 - Pricing and Estimating
15 - Cost Control
17 - Risk Management
19 - Contracts and Procurement
20 - Quality Management

I would recommend reading these chapter once through, then answering the questions at the end of the chapters, and going back to sections you were not clear about. Unlike the previous editions, this one has answers for the end of chapter questions and I found them relevant to the study of the PMP exam.

The last 3 chapters are an advanced overview of topics such as developing your own project management methodology, critical chain (which you may get a question or two on), and the Project Management Office (PMO). These chapters can be glanced over or skipped for another time.

I can recall when I took a PMP exam prep class with the PMI LA chapter, that many instructors acknowledged the greatness of this book and the likelihood of learning everything you need to know for the PMP exam if studied exhaustively, but also kept saying what an enormous tome it is at 1000+ pages and the exhaustive technical details of project management laid out, that most recommended not to use the resource unless you had a lot of time and stamina.

Hearing this, I was both intrigued and intimidated when I saw this book at Borders, but after picking it up and skimming it over and reading some sections, I found it quite readable, if a bit text bookish and academic. I will say this though, it is definitely more readable then the PMBOK. I promise!

Consider though that if you read the PMBOK (which many recommend you read several times) and a couple prep books, you have in fact read thousands of pages preparing for the PMP exam.

In all seriousness though, if it is your desire to simply pass the PMP exam and/or your pressed for time, then perhaps it is better to just purchase the PMBOK and Rita's text (which I did not like at all) and just cram and memorize. There's nothing wrong with that, as people taking the PMP exam are busy professionals without a lot of time.

But if you are planning to take your time and want to throughly learn the science and art of project management as well as pass the PMP exam with flying colors, then I wholeheartedly recommend this book. One way or another you will be referencing this book if you are a true project management professional.

I utilized this book in my studies for the PMP exam, and was able to pass in the upper 80th percentile and did not need to resort to any form of memorization or cramming, nor did I resort to doing a "brain dump" sheet on the day of the exam.

Happy studies and good luck to all you aspiring PMP project managers!

-Don Kim, PMP

5 out of 5 stars "Search within the book" would have helped.......2006-03-04

As a former colleague of Dr. Gordon's, I used the third and fourth editions of the book. Today I'm working with an executive doctoral student on a work-family question, which Dr. Gordon has published research on in 2000, and hoped to see if there were a few pages devoted to this topic in this book. Unfortunately, now I'm stuck because the publishers have not activated the "Search within the Book" function. How in 2006 can the publishers not have signed up for that function in Amazon? So I'm sure the book is solidly researched, but I guess I won't get to see it for a few weeks, by which time I will have moved on to other topics.

1 out of 5 stars Excessive examples, choppy writing, poor proofreading.......2003-11-23

The book provides useful diagnostic tools and challenging activities and case studies. However, the writing style of the author is poor and very choppy, making it difficult to follow the material. The author uses an excessive amount of real-world examples, but does little justice to covering and explaining the theory and concepts of the subject material.

I purchased a used 7th edition of this text book through Amazon.com. The pervious owner of my book (a student, I assume) noted several errors in the book. For example, in Chapter 3, "The Diverse Workforce:...", page 81, heading "INDIVIDUAL VALUES AND ATTITUDES", subheading "Values", paragraph 2, sentence 1, the published text states:

"Core values are more susceptible to change, and peripheral values are less susceptible (to change)."

However, the sentence in my text book was manually corrected by the previous owner (at the direction of an instructor at another educational institution, I assume) to read:

"Core values are less susceptible to change, and peripheral values are more susceptible (to change)."

When I first read the sentence, I could not agree with what the author had stated. So I did a search on Google.com and verified from other sources that the author had incorrectly stated this premise.

In Chapter 9, Activity 9-5 Behavior Description Questionnaire, page 319, the book provides a table for scoring a 30 statement behavior questionnaire. The activity requires one to select between an A or B statement which is characteristic of their own behavior. However, item number 6 in the scoring table shows two A answers, and item number 7 in the scoring table shows two B answers, making it impossible to obtain an accurate assessment of one's behavior pattern, unless one is able to clearly understand the subject material and correct the scoring table.

These are just a few of the errors noted in the 7th edition of this publication. It appears the author has not adequately proofread the final product.

2 out of 5 stars Reads like a textbook.......2003-09-09

This book is required reading for a Masters level course, which is the only way it will ever get read. In a subject area bulging at the seams with real-life, practical hindsight, this book truely shows the difference between academia and those working stiffs who are just trying to make a living.
I will say one thing however - the teacher made the class enjoyable. I was sitting there in class one evening, enjoying the reparte between student and teacher, when I realized:
"Hey! I'm actually learning something here."

2 out of 5 stars Old style type and graphics, writing doesn't flow........2003-03-04

It's not a book that makes you want to read it, I find myself just skimming through it. The author can barely go a page without mentioning "the dot-com global workplace", I find that very annoying. There are some interesting case studies but she doesn't give any suggested outcomes so the reader is left wondering what is the best course of action.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2000-05-16

I uses this book on Master degree and is really what I'm waiting. One of the most indicated book for people that is taking Oranizational Behavior.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Coaching Resource.......2007-02-22

The combination of theory and practice lends well to readers of all levels (from graduate students to seasoned professionals). The author's systems perspective focuses on the executive as part of a greater whole within the organization and the importance of understanding the influences that are impacting his/her behaviors. O'Neill also focuses on the importance of a results orientation (a topic often lost in other coaching books). She discusses the importance of thinking like an executive so that you (as a coach) can produce at a level that executives expect - increasing the likelihood of establishing rapport, a long-term relationship and, most of all, bottom-line results.

5 out of 5 stars Well Written and Enlightening.......2007-01-08

This is a well written and thorough resource which aptly combines theory with practical application of the systems theory to executive coaching as well as advice and tools to use. The book is very useful in translating the systems theory to readable and useful frameworks, pragmatic tips and case studies.

The author methodically explains the four phases of coaching process namely contracting, planning, implementation and debriefing. She explains that coaching is a complex process which involves the application of the principles and methods of psychology, leadership principles, business management and organisation development, among others, to assist the executive and the aspiring executive improve their effectiveness.

The book will assist the executive coaching practitioners, business executives and managers who need them and offers a practical guide to developing the effective communications and relationship expertise needed by business managers to run effectively their organisations in the highly competitive operating environment.

Read this book and you will have a comprehensive understanding of this emerging new field.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Aplication of Systems Theory to Executive Coaching!.......2006-02-14

I highly recommend this book to new and seasoned coaches. Not only is it enjoyable to read, but the author presents a clear description of the application of systems theory to executive coaching. There are a number of coaching books that describe coaching skills, but O'Neill's book provides a solid theoretical framework for applying these skills.

4 out of 5 stars Useful Guide with a Few Key Elements Missing.......2004-03-19

Mary Beth O'Neill is an experienced executive coach who provides a useful perspective and helpful guidelines and examples of what coaches can do to help executives. Her systems perspective and four-step approach is helpful with case examples and additional insights into how leaders can be coached to coach and how coaching can be combined with consulting to have a greater impact on the organization. There are several key elements of professional coaching that are missing in the book: First- The four-step approach does not include a thorough assessment of the executive and his/her organization using reliable historical, normative, and 360-degree data. Instead, the major focus is on asking the executive what they think they need or want to work on. Second- There is a lack of focus on involving and partnering with the executive's boss, board, key constituents, HR professionals and others to truly understand the executive and the organization from multiple perspectives and to have the potential impact on the whole system. And third- there could be greater emphasis on what happens after the coaching is completed; how to transition for continued learning, application, and improvement.
For more information about the principles and practice of executive coaching that incorporates Ms. O'Neill's useful approaches along with the additional components described above, you may want to go to the following website for the free Handbook of Executive Coaching along with other free information and tools for executives, coaches, and HR professionals: www.executivecoachingforum.com

5 out of 5 stars "Real World" Coaching.......2003-01-12

Excellent resource for experienced coaches looking for insight to take their practice to a higher level. This book is also useful for those considering coaching or consulting as a permanent profession. O'Neill provides many honest examples of the inner thoughts of coaches during sessions and tools to help maintain effectiveness and composure with tough clients.

Her humble writing style fosters the belief that "I could do this!" even though the concepts are highly advanced. I found myself going back over pages and concepts as I realized I had been in similar situations before. The case studies are exciting and easy to absorb but read this book slowly to embrace the richer complexities.

in this book there is no useful topic, discussing about prototyping, its usage and advantages, even types of prototyping!!

4 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT REFERENCE TOOL, BUT VERY DRY READING.......2005-08-12

Okay, this book is long, and very dry reading material. Most individuals I've talked to buy it exclusively for the halo factor - having this book on their shelf makes them look like they understand the academics of project management.

I would never recommending reading the entire book, but it is an invaluable reference - the bible/koran/gita for project management in my view.

IF YOU'RE PREPARING FOR THE PMP EXAM.
I read the following chapters through at least once each which helped my comprehension of the subject matter immensely:
- Organizational Structures
- Management Functions
- Conflicts
- Quality
- Procurement

5 out of 5 stars A very good all-in-one book.......2005-04-18

The book deals with the PMI's PMBOK areas of focus in a very structured way. Definitely a useful tool for PMP exam. In addition the book is definite winner for any practioner of PM. A full detailed chapter on pricing and estimation .... not to mention another on management of conflicts in PM scenario. It also has a Chapter on Critical Chain Management which is very much the topic today. ALL ROUND WINNER.

2 out of 5 stars A monolithic reference.......2004-12-21

This Book is just a monolithic reference that I used for a class. Don't try and learn from it.

The PMP exam is not as hard as you think; yes it is high pressure, time wise. It has primarily 2 types of questions. 1 is memory recall. 2. Is testing your experience, that is to say how do you respond to a given situation, what is your rational or judgment? And every question is tied directly or indirectly to the PMBOOK. Read it Twice. I used The PMBOOK with a book written in narrative style chapter for chapter against the PMBOOK. It's called "Information Technology Project Management" by Kathy Schwalbe. It has some simple IT examples that most business people can understand after all Project Management is irrelevant to industry. And The Project Manager (person) is not. Also Parts of the book "Project Management: The Managerial Process" by Clifford F. Gray. For Scope, Time, Cost, and Risk. The cheapest and "good" situational questioner (with explanations and references to the PMBOOK) and memory jogger (two products) come from ESI international, do a search on the web for company info; the author is J. Leroy Ward. These two books again are mapped directly to the PMBOOK. Use your experience, Intuition and smarts to answer the questions. Memories all economic formulas. Sleep tight and then go do the exam

1 out of 5 stars This book is not a how to........2004-04-02

I had to use this book for a project management class. I can safely say that everyone taking the course dislikes this book. I could see this being used as a reference later on after one has a good foundation built in project management but as for someone looking to break in to the subject, without someone who is experienced in PMP standing over you explaining the confusing charts and graphs, this book would bore someone to the point that the rewards of project management aren't worth the torture of having to read this book.

Book Description

The definitive resource for anyone developing and launching evaluation programs in organizations.

From new product launches to large-scale training initiatives, organizations need the tools to measure the effectiveness of their programs, processes, and systems. In Evaluation in Organizations, Darlene Russ-Eft and Hallie Preskill integrate the most current research with practical application to provide the definitive resource on organizational evaluation for managers, human resource professionals, and students and teachers alike. From designing surveys and interviews to analyzing data to communicating results, the authors present a systematic and rigorous approach to conducting evaluations and using them to foster learning and enhance performance at all levels.

3 out of 5 stars Evaluation handbook.......2007-01-07

This book was used as the principal text in a graduate management course. It offers a good overview of the evaluation process and a step by step process to either evaluate your organization, or create an evaluation process.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on Program Evaluation.......2005-09-28

This text is a phenomenal resource on evaluating programs. This was a required text for a recent class that I was enrolled in for graduate school. It has all the information you would need regarding the background/context of evaluation, designing evaluations, and utilizing collected data. This book is also clear and concise.

The greatest resource that I will use the most is the information on forming surveys and questionaires. There are a lot of great examples (of everything, not just surveys) throughout the book. It provides many contextual likert scale surverys. This will always be helpful to look back on because of the wordings and phrasings used in surveys. Creating an effective survey is extremely tough; but, with the help of this text, it can be a lot easier to both conduct and understand.

The faculty member at my institution said that she agreed that this was the best book on the market for program evaluation. I tend to agree with her because it has a huge amount of information and it is easily accessible and easily referenced. It has some images and diagrams that are informative and moderately pleasant to look at.

If you are going to be evaluating programs and don't know where to start or you just need some reference materials for creating surveys/questionaires then this book is for you. I could also see this book as a valuable resource for someone who is on the other end (having a program evaluated) simply for the fact that it will help with vocabulary/nomenclature when communicating with the evaluators.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent "how-to" book on corporate evaluation.......2002-05-29

Russ-Eft and Preskill have produced a first class book on evaluation that will be a constantly used reference on the bookshelf of any trainer, performance technologist or change agent who buys it. They begin with the history and theory of evaluation, presented in a very readable manner. Even their statistics section is easy to follow and apply! The section on the design and implementation of evaluations is packed with job aids, easy-to-apply tools and techniques, and guidelines on everything from running focus groups to sampling procedures. As a corporate evaluator I have been waiting for a book with this broad but in-depth coverage for years. Every aspect of the work of the evaluator is covered, and it is clear that the authors are both personally experienced in this field as well as widely read in the evaluation literature. Preskill and Torres' Readiness for Organizational Learning and Evaluation Instrument (ROLE) is generously included with instructions on administration and scoring, as well as an extensive bibliography for those who want to dig deeper into the subject of evaluation. This book is a must for those who are seriously committed to assessing the effectiveness and impact of interventions in organizations.

5 out of 5 stars Cohesive, Comprehensive, and Cost-Effective.......2001-07-10

The subtitle correctly indicates what Russ-Eft and Preskill's primary objective is: To present and explain "a systematic approach to enhancing learning, performance, and change" throughout any organization, regardless of size of nature. They succeed brilliantly. The material is presented as follows:

Part I: Background and Context of Evaluation (Defining Evaluation; The Evolution of Evaluation; Evaluating Learning, Performance, and Change Initiatives; and The Politics and Ethics of Evaluation Practice)

Part II: Designing and Implementing the Evaluation (Focusing the Evaluation; Selecting the Evaluation Design; Choosing Data Collection Methods; Observation and Archival Data; Surveys and Questionnaires; Individual and Focus Group Initiatives; Sampling; and Analyzing Evaluation Data)

Part III: Maximizing Evaluation Use (Communicating and Reporting Evaluation Activities and Findings; Planning, Managing, and Budgeting the Evaluation; Evaluating the Evaluation; and Strategies for Implementing Evaluation in Organizations)

The authors then provide a comprehensive audit mechanism (with specific directions) in an appendix to the three-phase system: "The Readiness for Organizational Learning and Evaluation Instrument (ROLE)" developed by Hallie Preskill and Rosalie T. Torres. For those in need ot supplementary resources, a substantial References section is also provided.

Here is a brief excerpt: "Evaluation can be viewed as a catalyst and opportunity for learning -- learning what works and what doesn't work, learning about ourselves and the organization, and learning how to improve what we do in the workplace. As such, it can provide new understandings and insights into our programs, processes, products, and systems. Furthermore, evaluation can provide us with the confidence with which to make decisions and take actions that ultimately help employees and organizations succeed in meeting their goals." The authors agree with countless others that the future success of organizations will be dependent on their ability to build core competencies within a context of collaboration. They suggest that to develop support for evaluation as a knowledge-creating enterprise, "we must create a market for it. If we think about evaluation as a means for learning and attaining knowledge, then it becomes integrated into every organizational effort --from product development to program design to process reengineering to systemic change." They then suggest seven specific strategies when introducing or expanding evaluation practice. Throughout the book, they also include 60 Figures (e.g. "Guiding Principles for Evaluators") and three Tables (e.g. "Typical sections and contents of comprehensive written evaluation reports").

Who will derive the greatest value from this book? Obviously, decision-makers in organizations in need of "enhancing learning, performance, and change." Presumably that includes all organizations. Also, I highly recommend this book to all consultants now involved with organizations which have the same need. Presumably that includes all of their clients. Finally, I think this book will of immediate interest and eventual benefit to anyone who has only recently embarked on a business career. They will soon realize (if they have not realized it already) that the nature and extent of what they learn, how well they perform, and how effectively they initiate or respond to change will determine the nature and extent of their career success.

With the possible exception of Peter Drucker, no single source can possibly serve all of the needs of any one organization. For that reason, to those who read this book, I presume to recommend a few others: Fitz-enz's The E-Aligned Enterprise and The ROI of Human Capital, Maister's Practice What You Preach, O'Toole's Leading Change, Senge's The Fifth Discipline and The Dance of Change, Katzenbach's Real Change Leaders, O'Dell and Grayson's If We Only Knew What We Know, and just about anything written by Warren Bennis.

Book Description

This book places a strong emphasis on good design practice, allowing readers to master design methodology in an accessible, step-by-step fashion. In this book, database design methodology is explicitly divided into three phases: conceptual, logical, and physical. Each phase is described in a separate chapter with an example of the methodology working in practice. Extensive treatment of the Web as an emerging platform for database applications is covered alongside many code samples for accessing databases from the Web including JDBC, SQLJ, ASP, ISP, and Oracle's PSP. A thorough update of later chapters covering object-oriented databases, Web databases, XML, data warehousing, data mining is included in this new edition. A clear introduction to design implementation and management issues, as well as an extensive treatment of database languages and standards, make this book an indispensable, complete reference for database professionals.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars incorrectly named.......2007-04-20

It should be named "how to writing SQL for MS Access, Oracle 7i and xxx" since that is all about. It is weird to me why "Design" is in the title. There is absolutely nothing covered on what is inside a RMDB, man.

5 out of 5 stars Great purchase.......2007-03-09

This book was required by a course I am taking, so I can not buy another one, but I think it is a great book. It has also helps you learn a database language. I forgot what it is bec I did nt use it yet, but it very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, for practitioners and beginners. Other reviews are a puzzle.......2006-11-06

I was almost put off buying this book by some of the very negative reviews. I bought the book. I have designed a few databases but that is not my main job, and I wanted to get up to speed on database design and use for a short project that I am leading. I have bought several books on the subject, and this is one of the most useful. The book is detailed, which means that if you want to go into detail you can, e.g. on what normal form is and how to use it, of the difference between relational and OO design. However, the book is designed so that one does not have to go into detail, one can get a good overview of the subject and start creating databases soon after reading it. Perhaps this book offends some tecchy purists, but most business people who need to understand databases will find this book valuable.

1 out of 5 stars The very big and so poor.......2006-05-22

DON'T BUY THIS BOOK! This is almost 1400 page book can teach nothing, unstructured not clear presentation of information can confusing students. It seems like authors don't understand some times what they are talking about. Not clear presentations of examples can to mislead readers.
After reading this book nobody wants working with Database design.

1 out of 5 stars Too much and not enough.......2006-03-07

I also had this book as a text for a database design class in college. While reading it, I kept thinking to myself that I had learned more about practical database design from "Dummies" books. As a professional application developer, I would have to say that this book's only value is as a (seldom used) theoretical reference.

Book Description

'Destined to be a classic work on the topic, Enterprise Security Architecture fills a real void in the knowledge base of our industry. In a comprehensive, detailed treatment, Sherwood, Clark and Lynas rightly emphasize the business approach and show how

Security is too important to be left in the hands of just one department or employee -- it's a concern of an entire enterprise. Enterprise Security Architecture shows that having a comprehensive plan requires more than the purchase of security software -- it requires a framework for developing and maintaining a system that is proactive.

5 out of 5 stars Step by step professional.......2007-01-15

It is amazing how different books can be. I read dozens of information security management related books, but this one is only I can use in my everyday job. If you are consultant or professional CISO, this book offers tips of how to do things right and how to be efficient. It is information security management bible. Buy hardcover version because you will use it every day.

5 out of 5 stars Really helpful for enterprise securty. Not a techie cookbook........2006-02-21

This is a particularly interesting book in that it proposes an approach to developing security architectures that are aligned with Business Needs. Most of the other literature that I have seen in this field seems to throw itself into technical detail and try to be a "cookbook" for techies.

The book is in two distinct parts - this first outlines the philosophy and approach of SABSA (Sherwood Applied Security Architecture) and the second draws on the authors' considerable experience in using SABSA in real-life scenarios, giving a set of "standard" services and mechanisms that should be considered when building an Enterprise Security Architecture.

If you are looking just to do techie "black box" security engineering with routers and servers then this book is not really for you. This is a book for those with a responsibility for enterprises where security can be seen as enabling the business rather than fighting it.

Like others with whom I have spoken, I liked the "quick notes" in the left hand column of every page that let's you speed read each chapter. They made it really easy to set a good insight into the subject quickly and focus on the areas that I really wanted to know more about.

One hidden gem in this book is the approach to Measuring Return on investment in security - it opened my eyes to using security as a business enabler.

5 out of 5 stars Every SMS 2003 Chef needs this book!.......2007-04-30

I've been working with Microsoft SMS products for years. Unfortunately, SMS 2003 is a very complex product that takes time to master. After exchanging emails for a couple of years (it seems) I'm glad to have finally met Greg at a recent conference and that he asked me to review a copy of his book.

After reading some of the reviews for Greg's and Warren's book; `SMS 2003 Recipes - A problem-Solution Approach", I can only conclude that some bought this book for the wrong reasons. Rather than comment on any of the wrong reasons; I'd like to comment on what I liked about this book and how SMS Administrators can take their craft to a new level.

What I liked:
- The authors covered the basics of using VBScript to communicate with SMS and managing SMS tasks with VBScript. Discussion of coding best practices, and of interfacing with WMI are key items to cracking the coding mysteries of SMS 2003.

- The overall format of the book is well done; Problem/task statement, how to solve problem through the SMS 2003 MMC, then how to solve/automate the problem/task statement through code.

- Each section of SMS 2003 administration is covered in detail, from automation of site property settings to automation of advertisements.

- Index is excellent - since I do not usually work in a "linear" manner, it's nice to be able to quickly locate a topic and find more information.

- The chapter on building a Virtual SMS lab. While this topic may seem out of place at first in a "recipes" book, I can tell you first hand the importance of testing any code based solution in a lab environment before releasing these changes in production!

Conclusion
SMS is all about automation, saving businesses time and money through automating; hardware & software inventory, and software distribution (to name a few tasks). There are many tasks that SMS administrators perform on a daily basis that can be time consuming, especially when there are many SMS sites that need to be managed. Some of the VBScript code contained in this book is available on various sites. However, Greg and Warren are to be commended for a compilation of this information in one source location and thoroughly explaining its usage. This book is ideal for any SMS administrator looking to take his or her skill set to a higher level of ability!

2 out of 5 stars An advanced SMS coding book.......2007-03-13

This book is for advanced SMS administrators who work with SMS constantly. I was expecting the first few chapters to start from the beginning of an SMS install and explain some best practices methods, but this book expects you to have it all up and running.
All the script examples show you how to modify sms to make life easier for administrators. And wheres the included PDF version of the book so you can copy the scripts?? Well you need to pay an extra $10 for the privledge!
If you want to customise SMS and want example vbscripts then this book is definately for you. If you want a book to show you how to install and configure SMS & explain its options, buy another book.

Edit: Greg had contacted me directly and pointed myself to his publishers website where the source code can be downloaded. Thanks Greg.

5 out of 5 stars Solid resource for under the hood SMS Scripting.......2007-01-17

I found this book to be very detailed when it came to the scripting aspects of SMS. A little creativity , an HTA front end and these scripts and you could have a very advanced SMS environment. I also liked the drill in on the ITMU screens to show someone that is initially installing it, what to expect.

The only drawback for this book in my opinion was the lack of OSD (Operating System Deployment) Feature Pack information. There is a paragraph that discusses it but not much more. However, this being a problem solution approach to SMS I am not surprised OSD isn't covered in depth.

5 out of 5 stars If you only buy one SMS book -- Get this one..........2007-01-13

This is the best book I have seen about SMS since SMS 1.2 (what 10 years ago?). I've working with SMS for over 8 years including 4 years at Microsoft and recently as a consultant. I recommend this book to all my customers who are just getting started with SMS as it walks them through basic tasks like how to create collection and so on. As you get used to SMS and want to do more sophisticated things, this book is right with you as it has vbscript examples for almost everything it describes doing through the GUI.

5 out of 5 stars If you have a little knowledge this book is a big help.......2006-11-25

My boss told me we were going to purchase sms to run with our domain. So I started buying several books to help. This is the first book that started me out from the beginning and took me all the way to the end in terms I could understand.
I found the examples relavant and helpful all the way through the book.
Anyone who has to administer sms should start with this book.
