    Book Description

Team Challenges promotes effective communication skills and teamwork. Designed to offer teachers, facilitators, and parents a wide variety of activities to cultivate children's problem-solving skills while fostering cooperation between group members, the activities in the book utilize common household items and recycled materials, and require no more than 10 minutes, start to finish. Presented with a challenge from this book, kids work cooperatively to solve open ended problems which can incorporate structure building, improvisation skills and physical tasks. The challenges will teach children to experiment with building methods, discover new uses for everyday items, try on new personas, and express themselves as they work together toward a successful solution. Team members are required to think outside the box, communicate clearly, and cooperate with each other in order to complete each task.

Activities include building structures from materials such as index cards, drinking straws, paper clips and sticky dots; moving items from one location to another without directly touching them; or presenting a skit portraying their solution to a hypothetical dilemma. Children will learn not only from each other, but also from observing how other teams navigate each task.

Pass some creative problem solving skills on to the kids (and adults!) in your life with the fun activities you'll find in Team Challenges. Adults who work with children will find this to be a great addition to their repertoire.

Ever found yourself with five extra minutes to spare, but nothing to discuss in that short amount of time? Turn to Chapter Five, and you'll find questions such as these:

*Name things that you carry on your back (a backpack, a baby, a monkey)
*Name things that you take out (garbage, Chinese food, an opponent)
*List things that are printed (newspapers, the alphabet, T-shirts)

Need a simple activity to occupy the kids and encourage them to work cooperatively? Challenge them to one of the Tiny Tasks, found in Chapter Four:

*Build a structure as tall as possible using 5 marshmallows and 10 drinking straws
*Create a bridge that will span 18" using 3 sticky notes and 10 cotton balls
*Create a continuous line as long as possible using 1 envelope and 5 recycled bottle caps

More detailed challenges are found in subsequent chapters.

5 out of 5 stars fun team challenges.......2007-08-14

I am a Destination Imagination team manager who is looking forward to getting my kids working on these team challenges. There are a variety of challenges in this book that are easy to prepare and set up for but they look fun, interesting and challenging. They are sure to make my kids brains work! Book contains good tips too!

5 out of 5 stars A wide variety of great ideas. .......2006-12-16

This book offers all kinds of great activities that will help foster cooperation, communication and creativity within whatever group of people you're using it for. The tasks range from mental activities to physical ones and are easy to understand, fun to execute and can be completed with objects that you usually have around the house. The book is a great tool for your own children, birthday parties, classrooms and it's also a perfect teacher gift!

    2 out of 5 stars 3 activities with 1001 variations.......2006-11-23

Essentially, this is a book for people with little-to-no experience with group games or team building. All of the activities listed were ones I already knew, and the large number in the title comes from the number of variations for each of 3 activities: building things out of everyday items (see how high you can build a tower with the given items), common physical challenges (get the group from one side of the room to another using various props), and improv/word games. If you have a small imagination and very limited knowlegde of common team building activities, you might like this book, but if you're already in the field and looking for a book of new ideas, keep on looking. This isn't it.

4 out of 5 stars From the Creativity Editor at BellaOnline.com.......2006-05-11

Team Challenges is a resource book packed with ideas and activities for encouraging and developing children?s creativity, lateral thinking, and communication skills.

It's easy to see how these challenges could help to develop a child's confidence as well as exposing children to career and skill development options. Solutions are not necessarily guaranteed and children can be encouraged to continue thinking a problem through when the time is up and to present further ideas later, or even try the task again.

The challenges in this book emphasise creative and imaginative thinking and I'm very impressed with the author's ideas.

5 out of 5 stars Must have! Wish I'd had it years ago!.......2005-12-21

We're a homeschooling family, and have started using this book in our co-op. It's so amazing to watch the idea of "team" unfold as we go along. This book is fantastic, so well organized and well written, and full of so many different ideas, you're bound to find something unique that works for every personality. We've participated in Oddessey of the Mind in the past, and I think this book should be on every group leader's book shelf. If you like helping kids and adults learn to work together, this book will take you to new levels of cooperation, and will likely teach you more about yourself than you ever thought possible.

    Book Description

The book is an overview of the development of basic ideas and mathematical results regarding measures and principles of uncertainty-based information formalized within the framework of classical set theory, probability theory, fuzzy set theory, possibility theory, and the Dempster-Shafer theory of evidence.
The book contains many new results, which had until now not been available in a single monograph. The book is very useful for researchers, but it can also be used as a graduate text.

    Book Description

Agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS), a way to simulate a large number of choices by individual actors, is one of the most exciting practical developments in business modeling since the invention of relational databases. It represents a new way to understand data and generate information that has never been available before--a way for businesses to view the future and to understand and anticipate the likely effects of their decisions on their markets and industries. It thus promises to have far-reaching effects on the way that businesses in many areas use computers to support practical decision-making. Managing Business Complexity is the first complete business-oriented agent-based modeling and simulation resource. It has three purposes: first, to teach readers how to think about ABMS, that is, about agents and their interactions; second, to teach readers how to explain the features and advantages of ABMS to other people and third, to teach readers how to actually implement ABMS by building agent-based simulations. It is intended to be a complete ABMS resource, accessible to readers who haven't had any previous experience in building agent-based simulations, or any other kinds of models, for that matter. It is also a collection of ABMS business applications resources, all assembled in one place for the first time. In short, Managing Business Complexity addresses who needs ABMS and why, where and when ABMS can be applied to the everyday business problems that surround us, and how specifically to build these powerful agent-based models.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great start to bridge insights from complexity science into business applications.......2007-04-16

'Managing Business Complexity' is a great start at bridging the significant academic work in complexity science over recent years to business applications. It provides an introduction to agent-based simulations and an overview of the characteristics and advantages of agents, and walks the reader through two illustrative examples. Such examples are especially helpful to readers with little or no previous experience using agent-based models.

Applications of complexity science to business are still in their infancy. As such, the discussion in the book leans towards the academic, and more pointedly towards programmers rather than business practitioners with scant scientific background. Future editions of this book might benefit from including further business applications, and including the impact to bottom line.

This book is highly recommended as an overview of this exciting subject and its applicability to business situations.

      Book Description

This is a philosophical but non-technical analysis of the very idea of a rule. Although focused somewhat on the role of rules in the legal system, it is also relevant to the place of rules in morality, religion, etiquette, games, language, and family governance. In both explaining the idea of a rule and making the case for taking rules seriously, the book is a departure both in scope and in perspective from anything that now exists.

      Book Description

Computer Supported Argument Visualization is attracting attention across education, science, public policy and business. More than ever, we need sense-making tools to help negotiate understanding in the face of multi-stakeholder, ill-structured problems. In order to be effective, these tools must support human cognitive and discursive processes, and provide suitable representations, services and user interfaces. Visualizing Argumentation is written by practitioners and researchers for colleagues working in collaborative knowledge media, educational technology and organizational sense-making. It will also be of interest to theorists interested in software tools which embody different argumentation models. Particular emphasis is placed on the usability and effectiveness of tools in different contexts.
      Among the key features are:
      - Case studies covering educational, public policy, business and scientific argumentation
      - Expanded, regularly updated resources on the companion website:
      www.VisualizingArgumentation.info
"The old leadership idea of "vision" has been transformed in the face of wicked problems in the new organizational landscape. In this excellent book we find a comprehensive yet practical guide for using visual methods to collaborate in the construction of shared knowledge. This book is essential for managers and leaders seeking new ways of navigating complexity and chaos in the workplace."

      Book Description

The IT community has always struggled with questions concerning the value of an organization’s investment in software and hardware. It is the goal of value-based software engineering (VBSE) to develop models and measures of value which are of use for managers, developers and users as they make tradeoff decisions between, for example, quality and cost or functionality and schedule – such decisions must be economically feasible and comprehensible to the stakeholders with differing value perspectives. VBSE has its roots in work on software engineering economics, pioneered by Barry Boehm in the early 1980s. However, the emergence of a wider scope that defines VBSE is more recent. VBSE extends the merely technical ISO software engineering definition with elements not only from economics, but also from cognitive science, finance, management science, behavioural sciences, and decision sciences, giving rise to a truly multi-disciplinary framework.

Biffl and his co-editors invited leading researchers and structured their contributions into three parts, following an introduction into the area by Boehm himself. They first detail the foundations of VBSE, followed by a presentation of state-of-the-art methods and techniques. The third part demonstrates the benefits of VBSE through concrete examples and case studies.

This book deviates from the more anecdotal style of many management-oriented software engineering books and so appeals particularly to all readers who are interested in solid foundations for high-level aspects of software engineering decision making, i.e. to product or project managers driven by economics and to software engineering researchers and students.

        Book Description

The complexity of issues requiring rational decision making grows and thus such decisions are becoming more and more difficult, despite advances in methodology and tools for decision support and in other areas of research. Globalization, interlinks between environmental, industrial, social and political issues, and rapid speed of change all contribute to the increase of this complexity. Specialized knowledge about decision-making processes and their support is increasing, but a large spectrum of approaches presented in the literature is typically illustrated only by simple examples. Moreover, the integration of model-based decision support methodologies and tools with specialized model-based knowledge developed for handling real problems in environmental, engineering, industrial, economical, social and political activities is often not satisfactory.
Therefore, there is a need to present the state of art of methodology and tools for development of model-based decision support systems, and illustrate this state by applications to various complex real-world decision problems.
The monograph reports many years of experience of many researchers, who have not only contributed to the developments in operations research but also succeeded to integrate knowledge and craft of various disciplines into several modern decision support systems which have been applied to actual complex decision-making processes in various fields of policy making. The experience presented in this book will be of value to researchers and practitioners in various fields. The issues discussed in this book gain in importance with the development of the new era of the information society, where information, knowledge, and ways of processing them become a decisive part of human activities. The examples presented in this book illustrate how how various methods and tools of model-based decision support can actually be used for helping modern decision makers that face complex problems.
Overview of the contents: The first part of this three-part book presents the methodological background and characteristics of modern decision-making environment, and the value of model-based decision support thus addressing current challenges of decision support. It also provides the methodology of building and analyzing mathematical models that represent underlying physical and economic processes, and that are useful for modern decision makers at various stages of decision making. These methods support not only the analysis of Pareto-efficient solutions that correspond best to decision maker preferences but also allow the use of other modeling concepts like soft constraints, soft simulation, or inverse simulation.
The second part describes various types of tools that are used for the development of decision support systems. These include tools for modeling, simulation, optimization, tools supporting choice and user interfaces. The described tools are both standard, commercially available, and nonstandard, public domain or shareware software, which are robust enough to be used also for complex applications.
All four environmental applications (regional water quality management, land use planning, cost-effective policies aimed at improving the European air quality, energy planning with environmental implications) presented in the third part of the book rely on many years of cooperation between the authors of the book with several IIASA's projects, and with many researchers from the wide IIASA network of collaborating institutions. All these applications are characterized by an intensive use of model-based decision support.
Finally, the appendix contains a short description of some of the tools described in the book that are available from IIASA, free of charge, for research and educational purposes.
The experiences reported in this book indicate that the development of DSSs for strategic environmental decision making should be a joint effort involving experts in the subject area, modelers, and decision support experts. For the other experiences discussed in this book, the authors stress the importance of good data bases, and good libraries of tools. One of the most important requirements is a modular structure of a DSS that enhances the reusability of system modules. In such modular structures, user interfaces play an important role.
The book shows how modern achievements in mathematical programming and computer sciences may be exploited for supporting decision making, especially about strategic environmental problems. It presents the methodological background of various methods for model-based decision support and reviews methods and tools for model development and analysis. The methods and tools are amply illustrated with extensive applications.
Audience: This book will be of interest to researchers and practitioners in the fields of model development and analysis, model-based decision analysis and support, (particularly in the environment, economics, agriculture, engineering, and negotiations areas) and mathematical programming. For understanding of some parts of the text a background in mathematics and operational research is required but several chapters of the book will be of value also for readers without such a background.
The monograph is also suitable for use as a text book for courses on advanced (Master and Ph.D.) levels for programs on Operations Research, decision analysis, decision support and various environmental studies (depending on the program different parts of the book may be emphasized).

5 out of 5 stars Best OR book for beginners on the market -- by far!.......2005-01-12

Professor Denardo's textbook is written in absolutely the most crystal clear way possible and is thus not only completely accessible to beginners. It can also serve as a bridge for those with less mathematical background into OR and economics at the higher mathematical level.

The chapters on linear programming at the beginning of the book show the reader the intuitive reasoning of the simplex method. In the third-to-last chapter of the book, Denardo introduces the requisite matrix algebra (again his exposition of this is a complete gem for someone who didn't quite "get" linear algebra before reading this book), and then he shows the actual algorithm for simplex method in the second-to-last chapter. the final chapter is about LP duality and its extensions to things like general equilibrium, the Max-flow-min-cut, and other applications. Denardo's extensive use of excel in these chapters is done in a way that is a huge aid to the student's understanding.

I should also note that the chapters on game theory, integer programming, and dynamic programming are excellent for the introductory student.

My one complaint is that this book needs a sequel. Denardo is an excellent writer, and I would love to see an advanced general OR text, which uses the last chapters of this introductory book as a point of departure.

        Book Description

In this book, Peter Herzum and Oliver Sims present a complete component based strategy, the business component approach, that applies and extends component thinking to all aspects of the software life cycle for enterprise systems. The approach includes a conceptual framework that brings components into the world of scalable systems, and outlines the different component granularities.

It also includes a methodology that goes beyond current object-oriented practices to provide the concepts required to meet the real challenges of component-based development. Using their business component approach, the authors then provide a blueprint for a business component factory--a development capability that can produce software with the quality, speed, and flexibility needed to match changing business needs. Sprinkled with guidelines, tips, and architectural patterns, this book fully prepares you for the approaching component revolution.

        Praise for Business Component Factory

". . . this book should be very useful for anyone considering the daunting task of adopting component software on an enterprise scale."-Clemens Szyperski (Microsoft Research), Author of the award-winning book, Component Software: Beyond Object-Oriented Programming

"Herzum and Sims do an admirable job of differentiating the different component concepts, allowing this clearly written book to focus on the construction of business systems by non-software practitioners, out of business component parts developed separately (and perhaps for a commodity component marketplace). This is the future of software systems, and this book is a practical, giant step in that direction."-Richard Mark Soley, PhD,Chairman and CEO, OMG

"Finally, a book that takes you from component design all the way down to the middleware on which they are deployed. ItÕs an important contribution to the nascent server-side component discipline written by practitioners for practitioners."-Robert Orfali, Author of Client/Server Survival Guide, Third Edition and Client/Server Programming with Java and CORBA, Second Edition (both from Wiley)

2 out of 5 stars Good information, but not all that new........2001-06-25

One of the things I've noticed over the years is that many books on computer - related topics tend to recycle a lot of concepts; it sometimes makes me wonder if there is ever anything new in the world of software engineering. For example, for a while now, we've been reading a lot of philosophy and techniques about object-oriented programming. Good stuff, but not all that different from what good designers and programmers were already doing years before. Well, in this book the "objects" get bigger, and they're described with different words. Something about this recycling process which is a particular irritant to me is that the people who write these books seem to feel the need to invent new words (or assign new meanings to old words). I've always thought that the purpose of language is to communicate -- reassigning word meanings is not something I find helpful. Who, for example, ever heard of "process management architecture"?

Much of the material in this book is stuff you've seen before -- the words are different or they're used with different meanings or in new contexts -- but a lot of the concepts are familiar. The book does expand its scope somewhat to cover much more of the "development process", resulting in more of a mix of technical and process information than is typical. This is good, as all too often we tend to separate the technology from the process.

Bottom line: Useful information. Nothing particularly new or revolutionary. Could have been a couple of hundred pages shorter. I frequently found myself needing to re-read something or refer to the glossary to re-discover a definition.

5 out of 5 stars Full lifecycle view, business advatage to large grain CBD.......2001-05-15

Herzum and Sims have taken a brave approach to components, emphasizing the view of components through the development lifecycle, where the same component exists from requirements through design to implementation, with only a different view on it. They do a good job of completing the lifecycle with project management aspects of component development as well.

The book seems high level, but they enter into a lot of technical detail as well, while not getting involved in a specific technology. The book is used by me as a textbook for graduate students, as it covers all aspects in detail but generically.

The advantage of the book is the way in which components are defined. Business Components are large grained, made up of many parts which they define in layers. This leads to a wider view of the concept, and leads to a re-organization of the development process.

The book is structured around an architecture for development, which establishes a production-line approach. This ensures the component concept is bought into throughout the organization.

This is the only book to focus on large grained components, with a pure business advantage, but explained technically. This is and is not a how to book. It is a roadmap for what to do and how to arrange it, but not the specific technology to use.

There is a lot of detail in this thick book, but it is easy to read. Very unique approach, and the only book describing aspects you will not learn elsewhere. Other books only describe the overall concept. This one tells you exactly how to fit it into your organization, down to how to structure teams! The book is very comprehansive, and really does follow the development lifecycle. You will gain knowledge of : components on a business level, a new lifecycle for development that is very tailored to components in business, techniques for developing systems, from individual components to integrating federations of components form third parties, all the other aspects thinner books leave out.

5 out of 5 stars Dispelling Myths, Doing it Right.......2000-08-01

As an OO practitioner and methodologist for the last 10 years, I found the Herzum / Sims book to be right on the money in several regards.

OO has a lot of theoretical ideas which just don't seem to pan out in practice. The Business Component Factory cleary explains why, and shows what really works in the true industrial setting. It is rich in practical advise, and low in BS. Very refreshing for the software practitioner who is frustrated by the OO theoreticians who spout their wisdom from the ivory towers, but have rarely, if ever, had to work on real projects.

Along these lines, the BCF book dispels the OO myth that all classes / objects must be as intelligent as possible, and admits that, in reality, it is often best to have "focus" classes. These classes contain the intelligence of a group of related classes (grouped in a component) and give the advantage of lower coupling for the other classes, and of providing a focus target for process and use case modeling. Hence, Herzum / Sims tie the use case models effectively to classes, then to components.

The BCF book also points out that components need to be "first class citizens" in the UML metamodel, which map from analysis through design into code. As the UML currently stands, packages and (UML-style) components fail miserably in this area. Herzum / Sims show how to get around this deficiency and model and produce large-scale software units (components) effectively.

There is much more to the book than described above, but the above two points emphasize that the BCF book is not afraid to take on conventional wisdom (even the sacred UML), to point out flaws in this "wisdom", and to discuss what really works. Highly recommended, especially for anyone working on large-scale system development.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent guide to successful adoption of Enterprise CBD.......2000-05-29

This book is the first I have read that really tackles all aspects of what is required for Enterprise Application Development through a CBD approach.

By defining the levels of component granularity and a recursively discrete approach to breaking a business problem down into components and their constituents as finer grained components, the true requirements for CBD are evident and determined. Many books I have read make the same mistake of only discussing development of components at one level (usually what Herzum defines as the distributed component level) and fail to address the many of the aspects of CBD that are not covered by development alone (deployment, testing, management, integration, and a roadmap for the development process and managment of that process through to delivery of a component based system). The book also talks and applies the component levels to the commonly depicted 4 tier architecture and importantly introduces the concept of components needing to be not only strongly typed for internal systems but also strongly tagged (supporting XML based component messaging/invocation) for virtual and extended systems. The coverage of what is required from a Component Execution Environment (CEE) when components are more course grained than simple distributed components is well covered and continues to define the true requirements for a Business Component Execution Environment (BCVM).

The book is a must read for anyone serious about adopting CBD on and enterprise scale. The book goes well beyond the common text available for CBD (that all concentrate on the short sighted development requirements for distributed components in a fine grained component containment model). I agree with another reviewer that for those of us that have been developing systems in EJB, COM+/DCOM and CORBA much of the book covers lessons we have painfully had to learn in developing multiple component based systems that have to inter-operate, but it goes beyond that in looking at what is necessary for component based systems at the next architectural level (one that may well incorporate disparate distributed component models).

        1 out of 5 stars Overall Disappointing.......2000-03-29

Although I found some useful bits in here, it did not come across as good to me as some earlier reviewers found it. Maybe I missed something.

I did find some useful coverage of some good development practice e.g. the use of layered architectures, components as large grained deployment and distribution units, explicit component artifacts including external description through code, build and deployment, etc. But I did not get much more from these discussions than I already knew.

I did not find the "interoperability protocol" explanation helpful: e.g. "design-time interface" was a very fancy word for a simple list of the artifacts required at design time. The authors do not seem to recognize that these include both things needed for tools to manipulate a component at design or build time, as well as those needed by developers to understand, use, or test a component.

The book sorely needs a clearer high-level view of how components are configured together, rather than the nitty-gritty of proxies, separating functional vs. platform-specific code, etc. I see some links to the never-ending saga of the elusive "business object" track at the OMG.

Overall I was disappointed. I'd say between 1 and 2 "stars". Your milage may vary.
