Book Description
Walk through the tightly packed, hierarchically flattened corridors of America's businesses and what do you hear? Not the sounds of harmony. Instead, you'll probably hear the grumbles of irritation as people with wholly different ways of working, talking, and thinking have been tossed together side by side, cubicle by cubicle. It's the teeth-gritting sound of generations in collision.
Charlie, for example, is 61 and desperate for some clear, straightforward guidance from his 43-year-old boss Mary, who, in turn, is using her trademark heartfelt, buzzword-laden management style in an attempt to radically alter Charlie's work processes. Jane, meanwhile, the 29-year-old technical wizard of the team, sits sullenly in her cubicle, unimpressed with either of them, and they with her.
None of them understands the other. None of them knows how to communicate with the other. And it's causing headaches and havoc for managers trying to mold this hodgepodge of ages, faces, values, and views into a productive, collaborative group.
Now, with GENERATIONS AT WORK, there's clear, concrete help. Written by a team of distinguished cross-generational authors, this groundbreaking book supplies fresh, provocative insights and practical solutions for understanding differences, resolving conflicts, and managing effectively in today's age-diverse workplace. Both sweeping in scope and highly specific, the book gives you:
* Astute profiles of four distinct generations: Learn about the Veterans (b. 1922-1943), Baby Boomers (b. 1943-1960), Gen Xers (b.1960-1980), and the Nexters (b.1980-), including their demographics, the events that shaped their lives and times, predominant traits, work styles, and key messages to keep in mind when recruiting, developing, and motivating these members of your workforce. * Illuminating case studies in generational peace: Go behind the scenes of five major companies that treat generational mixing as an asset. * A powerful practice exercise: Solve the plight of Charlie Roth, a fictionalized manager facing a cross-generational crisis--then read how 7 outside experts tackled the problem. * Hardhitting answers to the 21 most frequently asked questions about managing in a multigenerational workplace--plus much more!
For anyone struggling to manage people who just don't see work (or life) the same way, GENERATIONS AT WORK helps you understand the gulf that separates the generations--and offers practical guidelines for building a harmonious workforce where people rally together for the organization, not against each other.

Owners Manual For Managing the Muti-generational Workplace.......2006-08-04
The Year 2006 represents a unique place in time in the history of our workplaces in the United States. We now have four different generations in the same workplace and that has presented many challenges to business owners and managers. This book could be called an "Owner's Manual" in the sense that it provides some practical advice on how to deal with this age-diverse workforce. If you are looking for some help to "muffle" the loud sounds of colliding generations, or to bring those loud sounds into harmony, then this is a book for you. The book is a must read for business owners and managers to help understand the differences in the workforce; how to resolve conflicts and how to fully utilitze the diversity of ages to achieve success in business.

For managers, with a grain of salt, please.......2006-03-04
Never before has there been such diversity in the workforce. This is particularly true of the range of ages that co-exist on the job. In Generations At Work, the authors identify the four generations, the particular problems you may encounter managing them, and potential solutions. As the employee pool matures, this is knowledge every manager of a cross-generational workforce will need. These categories are, of course, cut rather broad. This book is probably better used as an idea toolbox than gospel writ.
The Generations:
1. Veterans (1922-1943): The World War II generation's dedication to the values of civic pride, loyalty and respect for authority have become a continuing influence in the following generations.
· Veterans tend to be more directive in leadership roles.
· Veterans are used to working in teams under strong leadership.
· Veterans can be prone to the "we've never done it that way before" mentality.
· Veterans often find technology intimidating and confusing.
2. Boomers (1943-1960): This generation tends to be idealistic and driven.
· Find out how they want to be managed.
· Expect a reaction if things don't go well.
· Motivate them with lots of public recognition, and involvement in decision-making.
· When mentoring them be tactful, let them tell you how they're doing, and think of yourself as a friendly equal.
3. Xers (1960-1980): The Xers are deeply cynical about management and the driven attitudes of the Veterans and Boomers. It is, however, possible to motivate Xers.
· Make your work environment as flexible as possible.
· Provide them with up-to-date technology.
· Give them lots of simultaneous projects and let them prioritize.
· Give them constructive feedback on their job performance.
4. Nexters (1980-2000): The most studied generation in history, Nexters are likely to be more like the veterans than any other group. When recruiting Nexters, keep the following principles in mind:
· Forget gender roles.
· Focus on teams.
· Mind the gap: there is likely to be a large generational gap between the Xers and the Nexters.
· Grow your training department.
· Establish mentor programs.
Very good read.......2006-02-27
I liked this book since it gave me an insight into the different components of each generation and how to deal with them at work as well as in general. I manage early boomers to nexters and am a Gen Xer and this book will help a great deal with that challenging task.
Real Generations.......2005-08-23
I enjoyed this book, even though I orignially got it for a class of mine on diversity. It is a great book, but as a Nexter I wish it was a little more updated on things about my generation, but it is understandable. I found that the generational stereotypes are very much in tune with my personal experiences.
You can fool some of the people, all of the time........2005-01-25
Have you ever read a "study" that contains tiny bits of truth (usually things that are obvious) but the rest is false? That's the case with Generations At Work.
If you remove the stereotypes all that remains is stuff that ought to be obvious. It may be that some CEOs with large numbers of disgruntled employees are unaware of even the most blantant trends and conflicts in the workplace but the lesson there is to fix the workplace, not the employees. All generations will be cynical if they are contstantly in danger of being laid off.
From my own experience, 3 examples that are completely the opposite of what this book describes. (1) People in my age group are supposed to be driven overachievers. How I wish that were true. Must have come from astrology or something. (2) I worked for a company that hired two young "golden collar" tech experts. These kids were outstanding. There were no personality conflicts. There were no generational conflicts. And the fact that they were so knowlegable made us worship them! So what if they preferred rock climbing to golf? (3) Speaking of stereotypes, the company shut down and we all got laid off. According to this book, young IT professionals can write their own ticket, right? False, again. Four months have passed and one of our young geniuses has a boring job with a long commute and big pay cut. The other has refused to take a crummy job and remains unemployed.
The book is not without humor, perhaps unintentional. Apparently Lucent is a good example of how waring generations can make peace. But I wonder how many managers want their company to perform as Lucent has.
In the end, the key to a productive harmonious workplace is for people to have jobs they enjoy, pay well and are reasonably secure. In a lesser work environment all managers can hope for is to tap into the stereotypes in this book to try to keep the dust down.

Written in a highly accessible (and often witty) style, this groundbreaking book addresses a number of generational issues. Deal provides a description of each issue, a summary of the relevant research results, a principle that can be applied to resolve (or at least mitigate) the issue, and practical advice for applying the principle in the workplace. Applying these principles will help everyone to work with, work for, attract, manage, retain, and develop leaders of all generations.

Solid tactics for conquering the generation gap at work.......2007-07-19
This ambitious book, based on a seven-year survey of more than 3,200 employees, examines how different generations view the workplace. Author Jennifer Deal handles the difficult task of presenting, distilling and interpreting the data according to age group and worker status. Her use of applicable real-life scenarios is effective in helping managers implement these findings, but the presentation of research data makes for weighty reading. We recommend this book to managers who have problems with intergenerational tensions at work, though Deal concludes that the generation gap is overrated and employees of all ages desire many of the same things.
Book Description
If there are "power-crazed, difficult people" in your life, this well-researched and insightful guide will give you the necessary tools to deal with them. Do you have a boss who appears to find pleasure in browbeating and humiliating you? A co-worker who tries to sabotage you? Maybe even a family member who makes you feel worthless?
They're all here, and best-selling psychology author David L. Weiner explains why they act the way they do and what you can do to prevent them from making your life a living hell!
In a competitive world increasingly dominated by intense corporate cultures, this brilliant study in organizational psychology will help you swim safely through shark-infested waters.
Customer Reviews:
Power Freaks is a real page turner!.......2006-11-04
If you have ever wondered what was wrong with you and why people treated you the way they did, then read this book. It makes you realize that the problem isn't you... Power Freaks explains why people behave the way they do, and why and how they manipulate you. It makes you realize that you aren't the crazy one...they are. A true help for building your self esteem. It not only answers all the why questions, but it tells you exactly how to deal with these type people.
Sucking Up 101.......2004-02-24
This book was very disappointing. David Weiner devotes most of his book, "Power Freaks: Dealing with them in the workplace or anyplace" to defining the power freak rather than dealing with the power freak. In addition to his lengthy descriptions of each type of power freak, Weiner's book is filled with pointless second hand stories and a large number of quotes from other books on the same subject. Could it be Mr. Weiner didn't have enough of an opinion of his own to fill up an entire book? When he finaly does get down to the nuts and bolts of how to deal with power freaks, his advice is basicaly suck up or shut up.
I'm glad I checked this book out from the library and didn't spend any money on it. I hope you'll do the same.
Once Upon a Time.......2003-09-13
They are everywhere. We would be living in a fairytale world if we didn't have to deal with the dragons...those "Power Freaks." But since this is the real world we need the dragon fighting sword that our "Knight in Shining Armor" Weiner has supplied us with. He has described almost every possible power freak you might encounter in life and has supplied us with ways to deal with them. "Power "Freaks" is an easy reading book and takes no time at all to get through. The dragons aren't as frightening after all...you just need to know how to deal with them. I recemmend it highly.
Apparently there's nothing you can do.......2003-08-13
This book was a disappointment. After reading the ten chapters that define power freaks, I found out in the last three chapters that the author doesn't seem to think that there's anything you can do if you work for a power freak except to either kiss up or wait until the power freak leaves the company. Isn't that what you're trying to avoid by reading this book?
It's disappointing to invest the time reading the first two thirds of a book, only to find out that there is no practical advice. You know what a power freak is, so do you really need nine chapters of definitions? What you want is some practical adivie on how to deal with these irrational people. But this book's "solution" tells you to suppress your own emotions and allow the power freak to go on behaving badly and not to get in his or her way. Weiner includes suggestions such as letting the power freak think your ideas are his or her ideas and complimenting the power feak. Isn't that the situation you're in now? Isn't your hope when you pick up a book like this to avoid the stress that a power freaks create in your life rather than relish in it? Aren't you hoping that this book will tell you how to stop cowtowing to people who are irrational? It doesn't. The only person who will benefit from this book is the power freak him or herself.
I suggest you try either Tongue Fu by Sam Horn or the Gentle Art of Verbal self Defense by Suzette Haden Elgin. Be heard. Don't give in.
You Know One.......2003-01-16
I just happened to come across "Power Freaks" in the bookstore and thought it looked interesting and thought I needed to buy it. I began to read it and couldn't put it down. Most of the people I know were described in the book. Now becasue of David Weiner I can deal with these people and not get upset all the time. I recommend it to everyone. It might save you from having "those special moments" with the power freak you have to deal with.

Book Description
While academic freedom enables members of the academic community to pursue their work, it can also become a source of conflict between faculty members as well as individual faculty and administrators. In most instances, conflict in an academic environment requires only a clear system in which to pursue resolution. The creation of such a conflict management system will ideally correct misunderstandings before they lead to greater problems, and as such, it is of crucial importance to every higher education institution.
Work and Peace in Academe assesses the nature of conflict in academic environments and describes practical ways to prevent and resolve unproductive disputes. Through stories, vignettes, and case studies, the author emphasizes the importance of integrity and trust to the ongoing success of any approach to managing conflict. To help readers develop effective conflict resolution systems, the book includes
-
A framework for understanding conflict in an academic environment
-
Suggested methods of conflict resolution
-
Identification of key players and resources involved in effective systems
-
Ideas for integrating dispute prevention, resolution, and management
-
Best practices in conflict management
Written for administrators and faculty leaders, Work and Peace in Academe will guide readers in developing a systematic approach to dispute resolution that preserves an institution’s culture, history, procedures, and practices.

I am a self help book "junkie" (Guess, I need help for that!) but anyway, I do struggle with professional anxiety issues when it comes to office politics and being over apologetic in general to authority figures and co-workers who can be at times out of line. This book is the BEST book I have ever read that addresses REAL ISSUES and stresses that arise from dealing with at times ego-centric, power hungry, controlling, backstabbing people and NOT LOSE YOUR SANITY. His mantras that he offers the readers are innovative and at first seem kinda weird but upon using them, ( I am just beginning to feel better about myself and my professional contribution!! already) If you have any issues like this that you are dealing with on this front...Pls Pls READ THIS BOOK!! Best Medicine in Bookform for these type of mental ailments.....It is a Must Read and should be recommended by every therapist worth their Fee.... I currently have a terrific work setting and co workers and management team. but it hasnt always been like that...The book even helps one to see that the problems nor the solutions are outside one's self but ALWAYS internal first beginning with Self perception and self- appreciation even during the most trying and aggravating work situations.

This book is very wordy and really doesn't tell you much. The entire thing can be condensed down to just a few pages of content that actually has value.
Outstanding all in one team training and handling guidelines.......1998-12-06
This is the first book on work team or any kind of teams that acknowledges how difficult and trying team work and team management can be. It's full of useful suggestions and insightful thinking. It's well written and not a checklist type of book but one which really explores things like conflict and the key kinds of things teams come up against. As a manager who workes with teams all the time, I highly recommend it. I am buying one for all my supervisors and all my teams.

Customer Reviews:
Best Book for Work-at-Home Moms *AND* Dads!.......1999-09-21
This book should be the foundation of everyone's work-at-home resource library. My wife bought it for me so that I could understand the true "ins and outs" of what's involved in working from home with kids under foot. (My wife has been telecommuting from home on a part-time basis for about two years, and I must admit, I've been less than supportive.) Recently, I decided to make the plunge to start a home business and take on a good portion of the child care responsibilities. We searched high and low for resources that could help. "The Work at Home Balancing Act" was the *only* book we found that addresses ALL the issues and challenges of working at home from both a MALE and FEMALE perspective. It's been our lifesaver because we can both relate to it, and it teaches us how to communicate about complicated issues that arise when you work from home. It's written in a reader-friendly style with great quotes and stories from men and women--very realistic and motivational. Lots of nuts and bolts strategies--everything you need to know to set up and run a successful home business or telecommuting arrangement, and then some!
Help for Parents Working At Home.......1998-12-22
Dr. Anderson's extensive research interviewing work-at-home parents is a must for anyone with children and the desire to work from home. You get tried and true, both common sense and creative, ideas from the many parents who have "been there, done that" and know what works for dealing with children of all ages. It also has an excellent chapter on issues for couples. You will find yourself among kindred spirits. Easy to read, encouraging and engaging, this book is excellent! Barrie Jaeger, Ph.D.
A Great Resource for all Work-at-Home Professsionals.......1998-10-24
Sandy Anderson addresses the key issues facing people who want to work at home or are currently engaged in enterprise at home. For those looking for a home career, Anderson's chapter on choosing the right business is very informative and guides people through the most difficult part of starting a business-"choosing the right one for yourself." Plus, her insights on managing a household along with a home business are worth re-reading several times. Finally, Anderson's interviews with many different types of homeworkers gives the reader a great insight into the TRUE benefits and challenges of working at home. Tina Egge Family@Work Editor, Work@Home Magazine
This book is the work-at-home Bible!.......1998-10-01
The future of work for many of us will be in our home--and we need to prepare for it. This book is the Bible for what it will be like, what we need to think about, and how work at home may be a part of our future.

It's not easy trying to stay focused and motivated while working at home. Sandy Anderson's book provides the necessary tools to not only stay focused and motivated, but to maintain your sanity too.
Customer Reviews:
Best Value in The World.......2007-01-14
I tripped upon this book because it is referred to often in other texts and forums on leadership, conflict resolution and managing diversity. And, for good reason! This book is so straightforward. It looks at life and shines a very bright light on the human tendancy to shut down communication or escalate battles and, of course, how destructive that is. The author doesn't dance around that reality, yet he presents it in a way that even the most defensive can accept this truth, (a testimony to his own developed skill in managing differences.) As if this is not powerful enough, Dana goes on to empower the reader with a complete how-to for resolving all tense relationships. This book is truly valuable and will have a permanent home in my reference library. Given how valuable it is, I would say to the author that he should go into an additional printing of the book. I, for one, would pay the standard business book price (approx. $20) for this wonderful book. That it is now only available in a secondary market for a mere $1.95 makes it truly the best value in the world.
Brilliant analysis to be applied to everyday life........1999-02-02
Dana explains theories and philosophies dealing with conflict resolution that are applicable to every person's life. His examples are real life experiences that many readers will find familiar. It is hard to put this book down. Not only is it great for educational purpose, but this book should be used as a reference at any time. Everyone should become accustomed to the 4 Step Method. BRAVO!!
