Managerial Statistics Text book.......2006-11-03
It was the text book the professor wanted me to buy.
It was good.
Sanjay Chheda.......2006-10-06
The book is very good with really good explanations and examples on descriptive analysis and inferential analysis.
Better Title: Intro to Statistics using Excel Add-ins.......2001-06-04
On the positive side, this book has many excellent case studies and examples. It is well written and interesting. However, I was disappointed, as I was expecting use of Excel to rigorously solve decision making and data analysis problems. The focus of the book is mostly traditional statistics solved using a group of commercial add-ins for Excel. If this is what you want, then the book would get five stars. However, for data analysis and decision making, I think a more thorough treatment using Excel without relying so much on the add-ins would have been appropriate.
Serious Excel 2000 Problem.......2001-04-12
The text book is great. I have many of Winston's other books and they are all great. The Palisade stuff works just fine. However, the StatPro Addin that accompanies this text does not work with MS Excel 2000. I contacted the IT guy that the authors directed me to--he was stumped. He just gave up and suggested I return my book for a refund because he could not figure out it out. Again, the book is great but the StatPro Addin sucks!
No trouble with Excel.......2001-01-31
I find the text and software a useful set of tools. It assumes familiarity with basic statistics and Excel, and builds on them to develop a powerfull ability to analize data and make decisions from it. I experienced no trouble with the software install or operation.
Book Description
Based on the authors' consulting experience with numerous Fortune 500 companies, this resource will help you capture the synergies of your next merger or acquisition more quickly and effectively. Augmenting their step-by-step advice with helpful templates, checklists, graphs and tools; Galpin and Herndon provide sound guidance for successfully integrating different processes, organizations, and cultures. The authors also address pre-deal dos and don'ts, people dynamics, common mistakes, communications strategies, and specific actions you can take to create measurable positive results throughout the integration process.
Customer Reviews:
Great review of prior experiences.......2006-03-18
This is a very nice review of M&A's taking place in the late 90's good to get an overview of the M&A keys to success.
Post-Merger Process Tools for Big Companies.......2001-09-20
Having been a manager at a large company, I can see how this book would be beneficial for managers at large companies that are doing acquisitions. But from the perspective of a manager at a smaller company that is being acquired, this book was not particularly helpful.
Packed With Knowledge!.......2001-03-16
This thorough, detailed book focuses on the misunderstood aspects of merger and acquisition management. Timothy J. Galpin and Mark Herndon clearly have vast experience and draw on case studies to illustrate their suggestions. They provide sample surveys and integration flow charts to guide hands-on planning, and offer practical advice that you can apply in real-world situations. Not all of these ideas are new, nor do the authors claim them to be. Instead, they apply the most relevant ideas from management and psychology to M&A. The authors hammer home an extremely consistent message: You must communicate. They present their ideas clearly, even though the book is often wordy and uses a lot of passive voice (alas, business prose). Nonetheless, this is actually a very dense book and the authors are careful not to waste the reader's time. This is essential reading for virgin M&A managers, and we at getAbstract think that even experienced acquirers may find much to learn.
About as "Complete" as Possible.......2000-07-15
There is already an abundance of resources on the subject of M&A, especially those available on the WWW. If you are looking for a single-volume source, this is probably one of the best. The authors devote 14 chapters to virtually all aspects of M&A. In process, with clarity and eloquence, they explain the "Watson Wyatt Deal Flow Model" which, after appropriate modifications, can be applied to almost any organization involved in M&A negotiations, either as a buyer or as a seller. The final chapter, all by itself, is well worth the cost of the book. In it, the authors suggest various "keys" to M&A success. They then provide:
Resource A: Sample Task Force Charter
Resource B: Integration Planning Template
Resource C: Executive Summary of Watson Wyatt Worldwide's 1998-1999 Mergers and Acquisitions Survey
What we have here is a single-volume in which two experts on the subject of M&A seem to share everything they know about the subject. Even if your company is not currently a buyer or seller, its senior-level executives should read this book. Why? Because you just never know. Perhaps sooner than now anticipated, your company will be courted by another...or it will be attracted to another company as a prospective acquisition. In either situation, this book (and the "Watson Wyatt Deal Flow Model" it discusses) will be invaluable.
Supplement to Wall Street M&A deals.......2000-05-17
The book is a great supplement to the subject of Valuation models and talks about in depth analysis that goes into the art of valuing a company. It actually goes in to informing the reader about the pre-merger and post-merger outcomes.....very informative and analytical!
Book Description
Everyone gets stuck sooner or later. The big question is how do you get unstuck?
People and organizations get stuck because the most ambitious and rewarding work brings with it the most challenges.
Unstuck is a smart, fearless, totally practical guide to turn to for inspiration and immediate solutions. It's meant to be acted on, not just read. And it's based on the proven practices the authors have discovered while working with IBM, Sony, Hewlett-Packard, Nike, Gap Inc., and many other major companies.
Whether you need to step back to move forward, motivate a struggling team, change your goals, or create a clearer vision, Unstuck helps you diagnose your situation, identify the most important challenges, and implement the right tools and techniques to get things moving again. Now with updated case studies, this is the perfect book to get you and your team unstuck.
Customer Reviews:
I'm not stuck but..........2007-02-13
I passed on the hard copy of Unstuck more than once. When I saw the updated and revised paperback edition, I thought I should grab it. Having recently spent quality time with Ideaspotting, Zag and re-rereading The Brand Gap, it seemed to fit well with them both in spirit and purpose. Also, since Keith Yamashita's firm is mentioned in both The Brand Gap and Zag, I figured there must be something to it.
The idea for the book apparently came out of an MBA course at Yale which in turn led the authors to the realization that very few books "function as in-the-moment tools that let you take instant action." They point out that they ended up creating a set of flash cards which were a hit. Oddly, the book does not come with the flash cards.
Pity.
On the plus side:
* Unstuck tells us that there are seven primary causes, the "serious seven" for getting stuck. One of them probably corresponds to what you and your team are going through.
* Unstuck makes it easy to navigate to the specific type of "stuck" you have. No need to search the book for where you want to go. Just go to page 47 and it will direct you from there.
* There is a very helpful page on the things you need to unify in order to be a successful leader (or individual).
* Unstuck is small, nice to look at and will look good on your shelf.
On the minus side:
* Unstuck seems to be style over substance. It follows the highly visual/minimal text style of The Brand Gap but seems to lack the meat that made The Brand Gap so good.
* Some of the solutions seem to be based too much in common sense while others seem to be too contrived.
* Although one of the main tenants of the book is "systems thinking," you never get the feeling that Unstuck looks at the entire system.
Since I'm not currently stuck, I will read this again and post a review if/when I am. Until then...let's hope those flash cards hit the market.
Have a Moonshot..........2006-07-24
An interesting book, authors used a unique way to write this book. Don't bother reading the entire book; choose a path or paths and off you go to those pages like an encyclopedia. Don't get stuck while trying to connect the dots. I must say a tricky book for average readers. However, on a positive note `The Serious Seven' aspires towards identifying the causes. This book uses case studies to toss some practical ideas and solutions. Vivek Dixit, Houston
Okay, not great.......2006-06-19
The book covers three principles: Admitting you're stuck, Diagnosing why you're stuck, Getting unstuck.
It does provide an excellent insight into systemic repair using aspects of a system: Purpose (central), Strategy, Structure + Process, Metrics + Rewards, People + Interaction, Culture
There are many organizations that don't get this, and center their efforts on only one aspect. The book, I found, more applicable to senior or departmental management rather than individuals.
The conscious employee that reads this would become more knowledgeable (actually more valuable) than their supervisor. Using the knowledge in this book, they would then become threatening to insecure management (of which I would say most management is - merely because most people go into management not because they wish to help others succeed, but rather because they are simply tired of working themselves).
If you are going to purchase the book, purchase it for your department supervisor, CIO, CFO, COO, CEO as well. Otherwise you're going be seen as a problem raising such enlightened ideas in an unenlightened environment.
This, is not the fault of the book, but rather the structures of organizations.
The book advocates identifying informal leaders, making use of silent influentials. However, it also advocates cultural change activities that require the kind of power that only formal leaders have in an organization. The problem is that most dysfunctional managers will not be interested in change, they will not seek out this kind of awareness and if you (as a less powerful employer) try to bring things like progressive awareness into the arena you will be punished.
The problem I found with the book is that it is attempting to tell how you (a regular person) can institute change, but requires that you (as a change agent) have formal power within the organization - a very unlikely scenario, unless you are a progressive maverick type CEO.
An Unusual Tool to Get Unstuck.......2006-01-18
If you've ever been stuck and weren't sure what to do next, or had a team or project that was stuck, unclear on how to move forward, then you want this book.
This is actually less book and more of a tool.
Take the two opening pages of the book which tell you how to use it. And then, depending what part of "stuck" you are in (needing to admit you are stuck, diagnosing why you are stuck or getting unstuck), it sends you to a different page in the book.
That in itself may not be that unusual, but once you land on any given page you will get ideas and connections to other sections or pages in the book.
Can you read this book straight through? Yes, but you might get dizzy from all the connections to various sections. Instead, buy this book and use it. Allow yourself to become engaged in the ideas, drawings, pictures and approaches. But don't just put it on your shelf - at least not at first. Find a situation to try it soon and you'll find you want it close to your fingertips for awhile.
It is fun, different and has some very effective ideas and approaches in it. If you are stuck, the first step might be to buy a copy of Unstuck!
Highly Recommended!.......2005-10-03
The wide world of self-help books has become smaller. In just a few pages, authors Keith Yamashita and Sandra Spataro deliver a large dose of wisdom for individuals, teams, departments and corporations. Motivation jumps off the pages of this short, stocky book in the form of practical exercises and brainstorming sessions. The text, offered in multifont chunks with ample graphics, operates like a workbook or a workshop. It's easy to read - though the structure outlines seven key problems and then scatters their solutions. However, the book provides many real-life examples of corporate success stories and uses a minimum of New Age mumbo jumbo. What's more, it also provides a soulful look at human relations. On the downside, some of the exercises are repetitive and provoke an annoying feeling of been-there-done-that. But those instances are few and the book provides unique opportunities for personal, team and corporate development. For that reason, we recommend it to executives, fundraisers, team leaders and rank-and-file employees.

Customer Reviews:
bogus.......2007-05-07
This book is hardly worth the price paid for it. Unless you have Microsoft Word, it doesn't really work at all, though you can still wrangle the blank business plan templates out of it. The book does not discuss how to create a business plan, but instead is just a guide for the software, which has excessive features in the wrong places.
very helpful to develop business plans.......2007-02-25
This book/CD-rom package makes it very easy to create a business plan. It walks you through every single step, and gives you suggestions about what materials should be in each section of the plan. Highly recommended if you're just starting out with business plan writing, or if you need a refresher.

Customer Reviews:
A Reasonable Quick Survey.......2007-10-22
DOE Simplified is perhaps overly simplified. The author tries to pack ANOVA, factorial experimentation, use of blocking and fold overs, and response-surface methodology inside 200 pages. The attempt is admirable, but the book would be hard for a beginner to fully understand due to information gaps, especially on why the techniques work (at least on an intuitive level). The person who would benefit most is that person needing a refresher after a being away from DOE for some time.
A Truly Brief Introduction to DOE.......2006-11-10
The book is a very brief introduction to DOE. I had read other reviews that stated that it was only a very brief intro to DOE. My thoughts when purchasing the book was that would be what I needed since I had not previously worked with statistical experimental design. Having now gone more than half way through the book, I found that I could not follow the solutions without the aid of other more detailed statistical design of experiments texts. If you are truly a beginner, I suggest using this book while referring to Design & Analysis of Experiments by Douglas Montgomery. In this manner while using a book similar to Montgoemery's 5th or later edition as a reference, the "DOE Simplified" text serves as a pacer book to hurry you through an intro to DOE. It certainly helped me become much more interested in pursuing DOE and thus order a number of additional books of which Montgomery's was one of seven that I have recently purchased from Amazon. Although I am digressing, my rating of Montgoemry's 5th Edition is FANTASTIC!!!!! DOE Simplified.... good summary as long as you have reference material.
Basic book on DOE-lack theory.......2006-03-13
Simplified is the key. This book offers a very basic approach to DOE. It's good for someone who wants a quick start in DOE.
Very straightforward.......2005-11-20
Great book. Steps through basic stats in anticipation of use for DOEs. Good examples and well-written. Easy to recommend.
Using of DOE.......2005-08-16
Using of DOE is useful for metallurgical engineering.I use doe for design of alloys (based on requirments and metallurgical parameters)and control of metallurgical parameters for improvment of mechanical properties.I suggest this book for all engineers especially for metallurgical engineers (for control and improvment of heat tratment, casting, electropalting, and other process).
I use DOE in my PHD project for design of a new steel alloy.

Book Description
32 fully reproducible, ready-to-use tools to help you build your know-how to solve problems, be more creative, and make better decisions
Paul Wildman and Jon Warner
Effective and efficient problem-solving and decision-making are not only valuable individual skills for work and non-work situations alike, but they are also prerequisites for effective ongoing organizational performance and success. If an enterprise fails to identify problems or challenges correctly or fails to resolve them properly, then sales, market share, expenses, customer and employee satisfaction, profits, and shareholder dividends can all be seriously affected.
This "toolkit" aims to give individuals a range of tools and processes to help increase the number of forward options that are available, assist in generating a range of alternative choices, or just apply a series of systematic steps to move forward positively and get to a useful conclusion or decision more quickly and/or more cost effectively.
Customer Reviews:
Not quite what I expected.......2007-04-02
The kit looks a little old fashioned for one thing. I was disappointed because it did not actually contain the blank templates that are to be used for various techniques listed in the book. There are only filled out templates that you cannot readily duplicate and use. You actually have to create the formats on the computer and print if you want them to look decent. Other than that the content is fine and can be used readily as a teaching tool.
Product Description
Free yourself from the limiting belief that you cant draw and move into the dynamic world of visible thinking for you and your students. The authors have compiled a symbolary of easy- to-draw iconographs that can be used to enrich communica- tion, provoke deeper thought, and make the process of creating Mind Maps and Mindscapes for note taking and review in your classroom a breeze. Visual Thinking breaks down the process of drawing into small steps so that anyone who thinks they cannot draw will find that in fact, they can. Visible thinking templates help students work through challenging problem-solving activities. As their thinking processes are recorded, students become more thorough and skillful in reaching conclusions and making decisions.
Customer Reviews:
A Book for Teachers and Students!.......2005-10-12
Visual Thinking is a book made for teachers who want to help their students use images and words to record ideas in a creative and memorable way. That is why I, as a middle school teacher, find it so appealing. The "symbolary" gives you hundreds of easy to draw images and there are many templates, too, that encourage visual thinking -- that is using visual metaphors to think through challenges, make plans and more. I think you will find many uses for this book! I certainly did.
Excellent resource.......2005-10-06
In this excellent new handbook on mind-mapping as an instructional tool, the authors include how to create mindscapes, easy ways to learn drawing skills, how to create and use symbols, and how to create mindscape templates for developing higher order thinking skills, problem-solving, studying, and goal-setting. Even those who believe they have never been able to draw, will find it easy to develop this skill. Included in this useful book is a "symbolary" of easy-to-draw iconographs that can be used to enrich communication and facilitate the understanding and learning of almost any subject. What a fine tool to have on hand for both teachers and students.
Educators: Take a look!.......2005-09-24
"I was brought up believing that "I cant draw" and I was hesitant to get this book, but I am so glad that I did! Reading and practicing with "Visual Thinking," I began to feel more confident in my ability to teach others using "pictures" that are worth more than a thousand words! There are so many students these days who have difficulties with language and comprehension when only the written word is used, but who are able to comprehend and express themselves very clearly and in detail when using symbols. So many wonderful templates are provided in the book that students and teachers can use to teach, learn, record information and review. Mapping with symbols as suggested in this book allows us to see connections that we might otherwise overlook. It is a fun text, easy to use and well done in every way! Thanks to the authors!"
B
Quite disappointed by this new book & with the two authors!.......2005-09-14
I am quite disappointed by this new book & with the two authors, whose past work I am most familiar with. Having read (& reviewed with gusto!) the principal author's two earlier pieces of work i.e. Mapping InnerSpace, I find this book to be somewhat of a letdown.
It is natural that I would compare this book with `Mapping InnerSpace.' Much of the material in the new book has apparently been rehashed from the earlier work. The only new stuff I can find is the `symbolary' of easy-to-draw iconographs, which is now been re-organized from A to Z, & a handful of new `Mindscaping' application templates in the last chapter. That's it.
Surprisingly, the authors even continue to make use of the same Foreword, which goes back to the late 80's & which appeared in the first book.
I get this funny feeling that the new book has been based on perfunctory desk research & no attempt has been exerted to conduct some real field research to cover new developments or advancements. Worst of all, & sad to say, the material is still restricted to the authors' own limited field of work.
Based on my own exploration, the field of visual thinking has obviously made tremendous progress in the last few years, in both the educational & business arenas. A quick search & browse across the net will give readers a good appreciation of what has happened/is happening out there.
I actually expect the authors to provide a quick round-up (or snapshot) of developments & happenings with regard to new & exciting visual thinking applications across the educational as well as business realms. There have been abundant application variations as well as radical enhancements in the field of visual thinking for business professionals. I am well aware that field research is no easy task in the light of many proprietary methods, but with a little ingenuity & persistent legwork, it would have been rewarding for both authors to go the extra mile. The new book, taking into consideration the prevailing developments outside their own sphere, would have been great for all the readers, especially the professionals.
For examples, the creative work of heavy weights in the field of visual thinking as applied to business & industry, like Jim Channon (large system imagineering with Advanced Visual Language), David Sibbet (graphical visualisation of organisational change with template-based methodology) & Matt Taylor (creative augmentation, with artful integration of visual space technologies, collaborative environments, & knowledge-intensive work processes), to name a few, have not been captured &/or exemplified. Not even in the Resources page. I am also very intrigued as to why the innovative work of Christine Allen Ewy (Teaching with Visual Frameworks) & Elizabeth H Wig (Map It Out: Visual Tools for Thinking, Organizing & Communicating) is not even captured in the Resources. There are many others.
In today's technology-savvy world, there is no mention of using technology to augment one's visual thinking approach. The Mind-manager software quickly comes to mind. Xplanations is another innovative one. There are many others, too.
In these respects, the book does not stand up to its title, Visual Thinking: Tools for Mapping Your Ideas.
For the beginner, particularly a teacher or a parent or a student, who is currently looking for plain visual thinking approaches, this book still stands as great work. I would attribute this to the wonderful symbolary.
To sum up my review, I reluctantly rate this book a 3 in the light of my foregoing comments, although it deserves a 5 in terms of useful & practical learning for the beginner in the field of visual thinking.

Customer Reviews:
where is a solution manual.......2006-03-29
anyone know where to buy a solution manual for this?
Poorly organized and insufficient........2005-02-09
This book is poorly organized. It lacks sufficient examples for many of the problems and exercises - what little is available is not sufficiently labeled to be fully understood. The Managerial Accounting Study Guide that can be purchased separately offers very little help. Furthermore, no answers are available in the book or the study guide, so unless you purchase the Solutions Manual (yes, you have to spend more and more to make sense of this mess), you will be lost. As a college student with a 3.9 GPA, I can say with confidence, this book is terrible.
A Big Dose of Managerial Accounting.......2000-04-27
This book is very good for teaching you managerial accounting. I used this book in college and found it to actually be of use, unlike a lot of college textbooks. You could read the chapter and be able to do the exercises at the end of the chapter.
I mean, you know the types of books where they have questions and it's literally impossible to deduce how to answer the questions from the chapter. This book is not like that. It teaches you how to prepare specialized documents for internal business usage. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because I felt that the information could be better organized as to make it easier to find.

What a Helpful Toolkit !!.......2003-01-29
As those in public education look toward the implementation of high stakes testing and the implementation of No Child Left Behind, it is imperative that data be used to show student progress.
Dr. Bernhardt shows what data are most useful and how the data can be used to help improve student achievement at all levels.
The tools on the CD are wonderful.

Book Description
Computer Supported Argument Visualization is attracting attention across education, science, public policy and business. More than ever, we need sense-making tools to help negotiate understanding in the face of multi-stakeholder, ill-structured problems. In order to be effective, these tools must support human cognitive and discursive processes, and provide suitable representations, services and user interfaces. Visualizing Argumentation is written by practitioners and researchers for colleagues working in collaborative knowledge media, educational technology and organizational sense-making. It will also be of interest to theorists interested in software tools which embody different argumentation models. Particular emphasis is placed on the usability and effectiveness of tools in different contexts.
Among the key features are:
- Case studies covering educational, public policy, business and scientific argumentation
- Expanded, regularly updated resources on the companion website:
www.VisualizingArgumentation.info
"The old leadership idea of "vision" has been transformed in the face of wicked problems in the new organizational landscape. In this excellent book we find a comprehensive yet practical guide for using visual methods to collaborate in the construction of shared knowledge. This book is essential for managers and leaders seeking new ways of navigating complexity and chaos in the workplace."
