5 out of 5 stars Great business dictionary.......2005-02-23

Well to be honest I always had a hard time getting through the piles of books during business school. But this "brick" opened my eyes and I actually ended up reading it out of pure pleasure. If you are remotely interested in business you should get this. It sums up many of the conclusions made by the great economists. Get one - and save yourself the cost of 10 others.

5 out of 5 stars Great Business Tool.......2003-01-14

I got this book as part of my MBA studies in the UK. The whole course on Strategy leverages this book as a reader throughout and it is truly a wonderful collection tools, techniques and models for the student and business manager alike.

A must have for people involved in defining and setting strategy

4 out of 5 stars too much focus on old cases and manufacturing........2002-11-02

Book can do better and be more relevant if it uses more recent examples of companies that have succeeded especially in the IT world.

2 out of 5 stars Economists approach but Porter is better.......2002-05-02

I bought this book because I was hoping it would provide me with good guidance in terms of how to use analysis techniques that would support my strategy consulting work. It has a heavy economists' leaning. This is both good and bad. It is good in that it gives some tried and true ways of understanding contemporary strategy. It is bad in that it misses out on the many ways and means by which non-economists understand contemporary strategy and is very thick in terms of its descriptions. It is not a "how to" book, that is for sure. Since competition today often seems to defy economic logic, this economic approach can only go so far. And there is still no better economist's approach than Professor Michael Porter's materials and this book certainly adds little to that great body of work.

1 out of 5 stars Commensurable paradigms.......2006-03-24

Unlike other scholars, Jackson defends paradigms complementary. This book, which comes up with some interesting methodologies for social systems analyses, leads to folly conclusions.

5 out of 5 stars Quite a remarkable book.......2002-03-02

This is a remarkable book. Inspite of a rather stodgy title, Jackson traces the various origins of systems thinking to their sociological foundations and implications. Extensive attention is given to systems approaches outside of the normal functionalist approaches ususally found in the US. I was at first intrigued and then delighted with his examination of critical thought and post-modernist approaches to systems approaches. Implications of Foucault and Kant for organizational theory are explored. Extensive applications of Jurgen Habermas's thought are made. It does make many of the other material (e.g., Senge's Fifth Discipline) seem quite shallow indeed. It is a bit more rigorous than most of the 'organizational theory' shelf!
This book deserves a place in any organizational theory class. It is an excellant example of exploring the various foundations, competing meta-theories and implications of organizational and management approaches.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nice work by Grant and Neupert.......2001-02-04

I use Cases in Contemporary Strategy Analysis in my Capstone course (final course) for my MBA graduate students. It provides them with excellent insight into corporate decision making and strategic planning processes. The case studies are interesting and rich for discussion. My only criticism is the world of business is so fast paced. I would have like to see an internet site or CD ROM with more current information on the companies. Many of the organizational case studies were dated 1998. A myriad of financial, economic, marketing, and strategic changes occurred since the printing of the text. Overall, I recommend the book for textbook use.

4 out of 5 stars mental tools to help tame complexity.......2003-07-12

I used this book during my MBA studies. It was okay, but I found it got a little detailed and too wordy at times. A more succinct writing style may have helped. Otherwise, the coverage was top-notch, since I really liked the material. The various inventory, forecasting and queuing models were nicely presented, as was linear programming. This book makes you appreciate how complex things are in the real world. Further, it offers you some mental tools to help tame that complexity, like SPC, six-sigma indices, and decision tree analysis.

The companion disk had some very useful things on it: MS Project, a simulation program, and a process-mapping program. I did not use the author's Excel program, though, as we were forced to develop our own during the class.

1 out of 5 stars 6th Edition Lacking.......2003-05-07

We used this book for an MBA course and found it to have numerous errors throughout. Additionally, many of the sections are written to an audience of imbeciles, as the concepts of "repeatability" and "globalization" are explained in extreme detail. The text needs to be updated, especially the section on ERP (no longer in infancy stage). Nothing against Coach K, but the editors for this book have dropped the ball.

    Book Description

Strategies for Quasi-Monte Carlo builds a framework to design and analyze strategies for randomized quasi-Monte Carlo (RQMC). One key to efficient simulation using RQMC is to structure problems to reveal a small set of important variables, their number being the effective dimension, while the other variables collectively are relatively insignificant. Another is smoothing. The book provides many illustrations of both keys, in particular for problems involving Poisson processes or Gaussian processes. RQMC beats grids by a huge margin. With low effective dimension, RQMC is an order-of-magnitude more efficient than standard Monte Carlo. With, in addition, certain smoothness - perhaps induced - RQMC is an order-of-magnitude more efficient than deterministic QMC. Unlike the latter, RQMC permits error estimation via the central limit theorem. For random-dimensional problems, such as occur with discrete-event simulation, RQMC gets judiciously combined with standard Monte Carlo to keep memory requirements bounded.
This monograph has been designed to appeal to a diverse audience, including those with applications in queueing, operations research, computational finance, mathematical programming, partial differential equations (both deterministic and stochastic), and particle transport, as well as to probabilists and statisticians wanting to know how to apply effectively a powerful tool, and to those interested in numerical integration or optimization in their own right. It recognizes that the heart of practical application is algorithms, so pseudocodes appear throughout the book. While not primarily a textbook, it is suitable as a supplementary text for certain graduate courses. As a reference, it belongs on the shelf of everyone with a serious interest in improving simulation efficiency. Moreover, it will be a valuable reference to all those individuals interested in improving simulation efficiency with more than incremental increases.

4 out of 5 stars Basic, but with sound approach.......2004-06-18

This is a relatively basic book on using key performance metrics. The foundation of the approach is TQM, with a nice focus on how to use associated techniques to gather, analyze and manage the metrics. Some of the material is wrapped in "Quantum Performance" and its associated measurement matrix. The terminology and approach embodied in these are, at the basic level, a refactoring and tailoring of existing tools and techniques.

I like the way effective tools ranging from affinity diagrams to statistical process control charts are employed throughout the book. The realistic examples using these tools and techniques the tactical and strategic levels makes this book especially valuable to companies that have embraced TQM. However, each tool or technique can be effectively used in environments in which management is seeking a systematic way to measure the right things for competitive advantage.

Another valuable aspect of this book is the focus on processes, and how they apply to the big picture of performance measurement.

Overall, this is an easy-to-read book that is equally easy to understand and apply. Aside from a few unique perspectives and the focus on TQM and associated tools, the material is not groundbreaking. That is not to say that this book does not merit a place on your reading list if you are seeking a systematic performance measurement program, because the approach set forth is valid and will prove effective in the real world. I recommend reading this book as a starting point, then augmenting the knowledge gained with "Operational Performance Measurement: Increasing Total Productivity" (ISBN 1574440993) to get a complete picture before embarking on any performance measurement initiative.

3 out of 5 stars For corporate controllers on a mission ..........1999-08-17

Just because this book was written to justify Arthur Anderson's best practices business doesn't mean it's not useful! Mike Hronec does a good job of making a case for developing appropriate performance measurements and sketches an outline for a robust process to get you there. Actually putting the plan into action is another story. Nonetheless, corporate controllers should read this book, if only to promote thinking about how effective their organizations' performance measures are in improving performance. Adam Lefton (adamleft@webspan.net)

3 out of 5 stars Quality gibberish, but very insightful despite itself........1998-12-30

I think this book has the potential to be a New York Times #1 Bestseller if it would only change the subject matter completely.

It is addressed to academics and students who are interested in the mathematics of finance, stochastic processes, and optimal control, and also to practitioners in risk management and quantitative analysis who are interested in new strategies and methods of stochastic analysis.

While there are many works devoted to the solution of optimal investment problems for various models, the focus of this book is on analytical strategies based on "technical analysis" which are model-free. The technical analysis of these strategies has a number of characteristics. Two of the more important characteristics are: (1) they require only historical data, and (2) typically they are more widely used by traders than analysis based on stochastic models. Hence it is the objective of this book to reduce the gap between model-free strategies and strategies that are "optimal" for stochastic models. We hope that researchers, students and practitioners will be interested in some of the new empirically based methods of "technical analysis" strategies suggested in this book and evaluated via stochastic market models.
