Find Me: How Psychic Detectives from Around the World Have Banded Together to Find Missing People

I teach spiritual development classes and i use ths book for some of the beginnings of classes and workshops, to help people get to know each other. It has lots of great exercises.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-07-26

I work in a school and this book has already helped me plan several fun activities for teachers, directors, and students. I highly recommend it!

4 out of 5 stars Well written and has good variety........2006-07-14

While many of the activities might suit a business, I was able to find quite a few for small groups in our church. The instructions are thorough and handouts are well done. My only suggestion for the publisher would be to make the book so the pages could be torn out and put in a three ring binder.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Residence Life staff.......2000-07-03

There are few books on icebreakers/teambuilders that I've found to be useful with college students ( I work in Student Affairs). This book, however, offered many activities that were useful not only for just 'breaking the ice' but also for applying them to the many educational workshops we do in this field. There was also a very helpful section called "Icebreakers for the Non-Icebreaker types" that was both interesting and practical. Because I work with such a diverse range of students, I struggle to find icebreakers that are not geared solely to the extroverted-types. This collection gives a number of activities that are beneficial to teambuilding while respecting the different learning/interaction styles we see in our students. Out of the 201 offered in the book, I have found at least 180 of them that I will use as integral parts of the next staff training. This book also offers activities for groups ranging from 8 participants (good for small staffs) to 400 participants (good for all-hall activities)!

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2000-06-29

It was disappointing to find so few ideas for a group of 100 business people who don't know each other. Most of the activities are far too personal for such a group, involving sharing personal information or touching. In addition, many of the activities have no "closure": they simply end, leaving us to wonder, what was the purpose of THAT? Many of the activities would be fine for very informal gatherings where being silly (marching in a parade, charades, making a human octopus) and getting personal are appropriate. But business people--even my lighthearted group--expect some degree of professionalism and purpose associated with such activities.

Book Description

The Power of Appreciative Inquiry describes a new strategy that inspires people and brings about a higher performance level in any organization. This method encourages people to study, discuss, learn from, and build on what works well when they are at their best, rather than focusing on what's going wrong.

The theory, practice, and spirit of this approach to organizational change is described in plain language. The authors provide guidelines for defining the change agenda, initiative, or project; forming the "steering team"; and launching an organization-wide kick off. Case histories demonstrate how organizations can attain sustained positive change by studying their strengths.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book describing important new planning tool.......2007-10-17

The book, written by Appreciative Inquiry (AI) pioneers and current thought leaders who continue to fine-tune this approach, provides an excellent overview of the AI philosophy and is accompanied by concrete examples that show its value and application.

5 out of 5 stars A Life-Changer for Me.......2006-12-12

Appreciative Inquiry is a process that I feel is one of the most powerful there is for - as the subtitle of this book says - offering a practical tool to create positive change. It's easy to talk in abstract terms about change and improving the world, but it isn't often we come across a way to actually make it happen in concrete terms. AI is one of those tools. This book offers a very thorough guide to the history, mindset, methodology and diverse potential use of this powerful process. In addition, it was instrumental in the startup and methods that I now use in my own coaching, consulting and training firm. It was both an inspiration and a way of approaching the world that has helped me grow tremendously.

5 out of 5 stars The right balance of principles and methodology.......2006-11-03

As an OD professional, I own a dozen different books on AI. This book is the one I most frequently buy for my business leader clients because it offers a great balance between principles and methodology. The clear writing, ongoing case examples and useful tips make "The Power of Appreciative Inquiry" a powerful resource for consultants and managers interested in putting AI into immediate practice.

5 out of 5 stars Appreciative Inquiry.......2006-09-28

This is an excellent book. It is very readable while it explains the theory and foundations of AI. There are examples of its use in the for profit and non profit world. I have been involved in strategic planning for several year with non profits and this is one process that folks get excited about. I would highly recommend this book and "The Appreciative Inquiry Summit" to get a practical outline on how the process can be put into practice with groups and organziations.

4 out of 5 stars Inspiring and Practical.......2006-05-03

As a professional organization development consultant for over 20 years, I have found The Power of Appreciative Inquiry extremely helpful, not only in change consultation but in many other aspects of working with human systems. I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars What nobody told you about change.......2006-07-17

Change is the ultimate illusion; nothing ever changes. The cover picture tells it all: is it night or day, earth or sky, field or bird, culture or nature? Illustrations of illusions. The only thing we can hope for is some enlightment regarding a different way to look at our perceptions of change. This book offer that: a short cut to the paradoxes of change.

5 out of 5 stars Mindboggling!.......2003-02-08

This is a great book on the mind. It shows us that we don't really need to know the mechanisms of things to make it work. Just like we don't have to know how a car works in order to drive it. The mind is the same way. Never mind the mechanisms it involves but if you do this and this, a person will do this and this. And surprisingly, although most of the suggestions are counterintuitive, most of the things discussed in the book actually work when we try it out on others. Try it and you will see! If you want to know why these things work, I'd suggest you read "The Ever-Transcending Spirit" by Toru Sato. It is a very insightful book about relationships and consciousness. If you get the message, you will know why the things suggested in Watzlawick's books actually work. Happy reading!

5 out of 5 stars Whatever you do, don't buy this book!.......2002-04-06

I first read this book in 1977 after hearing John Weakland speak at my medical school. I read it because even though I was in residency training to be a psychiatrist, I had no clue as to what he was talking about for over an hour. After reading it, I went to a week long seminar conducted by the three authors in Palo Alto, California. My understanding of what behavioral science should be about (but wasn't) was so profoundly changed that I could not do well at making a living in my chosen profession, because my patients recovered from their problems at such a rate that I could not find enough to treat. I had to go back to more traditional forms of psychiatry which were extremely ineffective, but allowed me to drive a very nice car.

The advent of HMOs drove me completely out of practice which is quite paradoxical since they like the idea of short term therapy. I guess the problem may come from the solution they seek which frequently has nothing to do with a positive outcome for anyone but the administrators of the HMO.

So unless you want your status quo in upheaval, don't buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose.......2001-09-03

Knowing the difference between first-order change, and second-order change can change your life! See if you can figure this out: "It obviously makes as difference whether we consider ourselves as pawns in a game whose rules we call reality or as players of the game who know that rules are 'real' only to the extent that we have created or accepted them, and that we can change them." This is pretty much what this book is about. And this, "When a person enters therapy, he is fully entrenched in a dilemma: what he wishes to attain has become all the more important and urgent ... and because of this urgency it is all the more important that no risk of falure be involved in the eventual action." Complex stuff. I read it once, and now I'm back to read it again. It's hard to absorb it all the first time even though you know you're reading some pretty radical stuff that you probably ought to be acting upon!

    Book Description

From the authors of the most phenomenally successful training series of all time comes a second huge collection of ice-breakers, brain teasers, problem solvers, and session closers that have been chosen to train for the skills today's companies are seeking. Included are games that teach employees how to continuous learning; exercises that enhance motivation, effectiveness, and speed in providing quality customer service; and activities that foster team-building. As in the previous books, each game has been field tested by professionals, most games can be played in under 30 minutes, and all the games can be implemented at little or no cost.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Helpful resource that could be improved.......2007-05-14

The best thing about The Complete Games Trainers Play is its sheer size. Actually, it isn't nearly as big as some reviews imply. It is really around 1000 pages, not 2000+. And for some reason, a significant percentage of those pages are left blank. But even with that caveat, this is still a sizable resource.

If you are willing to devote 30+ minutes to finding an activity, you are sure to find one (or five) that are ideal for your training event. The fact that individual "games" can be removed from the ring binder is also helpful. This allows you to use the activities without carrying the whole book around, and to easily photocopy sheets for individual participants as some activities require.

However, there are some significant downsides. There is no real way to find appropriate activities without flipping through virtually the entire book. A large number of the activities aren't very good. And, most of the book is in a strange "typewriter" typeface that makes it look like it came from 1972. (Oddly, there are some pages which are randomly sprinkled through the book that use a different, more recent-looking typeface.)

To really upgrade its usefulness, Games . . . would benefit from taking a leap into the computer age. In other words, along with the printed book, a computer CD should be included. This could feature a good, searchable index, which is now lacking. It would also make it possible to print out games, and modify handouts on the computer to your organization's needs.

I've never bought any other resources like this, so I can't say if this is better or worse than others. I can say that in spite of the steep price and the drawbacks, I'm definitely glad I purchased it. It was very useful to me, and will be again in the future. However, there are a few simple steps the authors and publishers could take to greatly improve it.

    5 out of 5 stars Trainers Dream.......2006-11-03

This is a great tool of Trainers. Keeping your trainees engaged throughout the training is always a challenge. This tool give creative ways to assess retention of information. The games are great and the administrative forms and suggestions are wonderful.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of games here.......2004-12-08

People love playing games a lot more than listening to lectures; this is indisputable. I didn't like all of the games listed here, but so what. Several I found helpful and intend to use.

    2 out of 5 stars Not Impressed.......2003-09-30

Although there is a lot of information packed into this book, I was very unimpressed with the layout and visual design. It looks like it was typed up in 1970. The graphics are ancient and the layout is just one big binder with no cross-referencing or indexing available. To find a useful game, you have to sift through hundreds of pages. It really is a shame, as there are some clever games here to loosen up an audience.
Frankly for this price, I expected something a bit flashier and filled with reproducibles that I would want to copy and hand out. The way it looks now, and with it's unwieldy format, it's going to sit on my shelf.
If I hadn't spilled water on it, I would have sent it back for a refund.

4 out of 5 stars The Complete Games Trainers Play.......2000-05-23

This book was helpful in planning an in-house managment training session. The book is divided into sections making it easy to locate games targeted at specific areas. The book is actually a 3" 3 ring binder. It is a large book, however, it does contain a wealth of information.

If you are serious about really changing your company buy these books, I, II, and III. If you are looking for another "program of the month" don't. This is a common sense approach to serious employee envolvement that you must be ready to fully embrace. And I mean embrace from the top down. Common sense, humanistic approaches like this are why the Japanese continue to excel at business in the USA. If used fully, this will help your company. If used half-heartedly, it will be another nail.

4 out of 5 stars Valuing Diversity in the Workplace is Paramount for Managers.......2003-01-20

Overview of book.Katharine Esty wrote an effective text for companies and managers that are concerned with diversity issues in the workplace. It covers topics like "how to handle or treat" gender, race and age discriminatory modes of thinking, valuing the differences diversity can offer a company, how to profit from diversity and how to treat and to be aware of the backlash created by affirmative action campaigns and government laws.

Message to Managers. Katharine's message is that managers need to be open to(and make an effort to be aware of) the diversity issues and conflicts that may arise in an organization. That managers should value those differences for the benefit that "looking at things in a different way" brings to an organization. One benefit of diversity in the workforce is ensuring different modes of thinking. Different modes of thinking can lead to creative solutions to obtuse problems.

Diversity leads to creative solutions. It took a farmer that was fed up with burrs sticking to his socks and a scientist looking at the burr underneath a microscope to develop "velcro". It took a botched adhesive experiment and marketing genius to develop the glue that backs "Post-Its". Innovation and creativity can be born through the mingling of people with diverse backgrounds, educational, racial, ethnic, gender and age differences.

4 out of 5 stars. The book did not receive all 5 stars because it slightly lacked in two main areas. 1) It is advertised as a reference tool on the page preceding the introduction. Superior reference tools, at a minimum, come with a Table of Contents (which this book has), detailed topic description or searchable key words in the text and an detailed appendix that includes the page numbers of the topic description or key word phrase. Although this book is well-written, it lacks Q&A topic headings at the end of each chapter and lacks a detailed appendix that would provide the page numbers of keywords or phrases. This means that someone were to perform a search on what they should do about "a certain race of people arriving late to work" that they would have to thumb through, page by page, in the race chapter to find the answer. 2) Does not apply to all managers at all levels. Although the book should apply to all managers at all levels, it is focused to managers in larger corporations (20+ employees) that have more vertical management structures than say a typical start-up or small business.

Katharine points out the legal implications, business and contractual benefits of developing a diversity program or value system within a corporation, but the most (if not all) the legal implications apply to larger corporations and developing a diversity program implies that a business has the resources to dedicate someone or some other consulting company to developing such a program. This implies that the organization be larger than 20 people.

4 out of 5 stars New Thinking Model for Diversity.......2000-06-01

Esty has written a very readable book on a complex topic. The issues of diversity are broader than race and ethnicity although those issues remain important. A significant driver in business is the diversified workplace to reflect the diversified market. Esty presents new ways of thinking about and addressing diversity in the workplace in some very practical ways. A great handbook for anyone committed to diversity.

        Book Description

Sometimes the most obvious solution is the most effective one--and the one least considered. Take conflict resolution. It's not the persuading, cajoling, arguing, or even trying to win that's going to solve the problem. Instead, the key to finding effective, lasting solutions to combative disputes is simply to listen.

Listening, as author Erik J. Van Slyke defines it, isn't the same thing as nodding your head in passive agreement. To really work, listening has got to be active and empathetic. It's got to lead to a sincere understanding of the other party's motivation and objectives--and to be the foundation for taking positive, constructive steps towards resolution.

And that's exactly what this unique, refreshing book will help you do. Filled with original exercises, examples, and models, Listening to Conflict shows you how to successfully resolve workplace disputes by practicing and perfecting the art of listening. You'll find probing insights and step-by-step guidelines on how to:

        * Develop self-awareness--or "listening to ourselves," understanding our preferences, perceptions, and resulting behaviors--to set the stage for better relationships * Turn self-awareness into self-mastery, thus changing the action/reaction cycle that so often leads to an impasse during disputes * Use empathetic listening techniques to convey understanding and encourage open communication * Incorporate listening into a six-step collaborative resolution process * Create a culture of constructive conflict * And more.

And Listening to Conflict helps you solve not only your own conflicts. You'll also learn to referee disputes between employees, co-workers, customers, suppliers, or even senior managers. By putting this listening-based approach into action, you'll establish your position as an objective mediator...you'll guide combative parties towards constructive solutions...and you'll build the kind of productive relationships that don't allow natural conflicts to deteriorate into destructive disagreements.

Everyone has to deal with workplace disputes. They're forever simmering under the surface, sometimes even boiling over in nasty explosions. But while conflicts are inescapable, they ARE solvable. Not by fighting or sulking or bullying, but by learning to employ the powerful art of listening.

3 out of 5 stars Benefit of reading lies in practical application.......2006-02-28

I work for a book summary company. One of the books selected for summary is this book.

Wherever two human beings interact, conflict is bound to happen and therefore in organizations where people from different backgrounds and personalities intermingle, disputes are more likely to occur. This is because each one wants to hold on to his/her stand and consider accepting other points of view as clear surrender. However, Erik Van Slyke provides a meaningful guide to understanding conflict and how best to approach for ultimate resolution. Biases and prejudices give rise to incompatibility but self-awareness leads to self-mastery, which is at the base of efficient conflict resolution. Detailing the fine art of listening and the many obstacles as well as steps for collaboration and principles of interaction, the book examines all these issues capably using exercises, examples and models. By applying and observing these practices, you could help resolve conflicts at workplace and even play a neutral referee between disputing parties. Indeed the author emphasizes the need for viewing conflicts as constructive opportunities to exchange information and differing viewpoints so as to arrive at a collaborated understanding. Perhaps the benefit of reading this book lies in actually applying and implementing the guidelines provided. It definitely is worth trying.

        4 out of 5 stars Conflict can be a win-win proposition.......2006-02-16

The author of this book defines conflict as the competition between interdependent parties who perceive their needs, goals, or ideas to be incompatible. On a more basic level, the author sees it as two parties competing to achieve different objectives, with both parties needing the other, therefore, each party remains stern in their position. This result of this standoff is conflict.
The author sees conflict as a positive process that is constructive, allowing parties to share information and be exposed to a different perspective. The author believes that viewing conflict in this light, one can take advantage of the opportunities presented through conflict. The author offers some basic resolution skills as abilities needed to successfully take advantage of conflict:

        · Gain as much knowledge as you can about the issues involved.
        · Establish working relationship based on trust and open communication with the other party.
        · Get everyone involved to cooperate on a solution instead of trying to change each other.
        · Manage group processes and decii9on making by clarifying the real problem and expanding the range of options.

5 out of 5 stars Transformed my work and personal relationships.......2000-03-20

Van Slyke's inside-out approach to conflict management and resolution has not only improved my ability to manage and resolve work conflict, but it also has substantially enriched all my relationships. It taught me to be more aware of the reasons I was in conflict to begin with, starting with my own feelings about the situation, and how that impacts resolution. Most importantly it taught me to stop strugling to prove my point! Instead I've learned to use listening to create a more effective dialog that lets solutions appear naturally and positively.

5 out of 5 stars a complicated but great book.......1999-10-02
