"Workplace Spirituality" by Nancy R. Smith is simple and enjoyable. Though this book is intended for business leaders, all individuals can learn from it. Nancy R. Smith is a Methodist Deacon, but she is inclusive in her writing. She values the spirituality of all, not just Christians.

This is a practical guide for those who work toward integration of their spirituality and work. It is also for those who seek a deeper meaning in the mundane tasks of their jobs. "Workplace Spirituality" does not encourage preaching to co-workers. It does encourage the reader to obtain the 7 traits of a spiritual person: Authenticity, integrity, humility, openness, hospitality, gratitude, and compassion. It delves into each of these traits, defining them and giving direction for obtaining them.

I enjoyed the many quotations and examples that are throughout the book. Though this book is supposed to be for business leaders, I recommend it for all who seek a more holistic approach to everyday business.

People often struggle with knowing the difference between religion and spirituality. Nancy R. Smith's Workplace Spirituality: A Complete Guide for Business Leaders not only offers a clear distinction between the two terms, but is built around that distinction, providing spiritual readers with a new way to live from nine to five. The book offers readers a history of the workplace spirituality movement and its importance now, instructing the reader on how to bring spirituality to the workplace, how ethics are involved in this process, and what's ahead for the future.

"Well, 'bye Jesus; see you at five o'clock," is one of my favorite lines from the book, and it's part of one of the stories at the beginning of chapter two as Tom is obviously going to work without his spirituality. Each chapter begins with a short anecdote like that one. The fact that it's organized like a college textbook is my favorite part of the book. Aside from the anecdotes, it includes chapter previews, statistics, exercises, resource lists, and even questions for reflections at the end of each chapter. I was pleasantly surprised by the way the book discusses real life companies such as Office Depot and Enron. These case studies keep the reader interested at all times.

Workplace Spirituality tells you what to do, when to do it, and what to avoid. It's organized so that you can live your new spiritual life at work according to this book. Organized like a college textbook, you will feel like you're taking a class and it will force you to be disciplined. It's easy to see this book fitting into college curriculum and at the same time, sitting on the shelves of not only your bookshelf at home, but also at your new spiritual workplace.

Book Description

This book seeks to promote a new spiritual approach to organizational leadership that goes beyond visionary management to a new focus on the spiritual for both leader and led. Reflecting on the current crisis of meaning in America, this book takes up the search for significance in peoples' worklives--in the products they produce and in the services they offer. Recognizing that the new corporation has become the dominant community for many-- commanding most of our waking hours by providing a focus for life, a measure of personal success, and a network of personal relationships--Fairholm calls on business leaders to focus their attention on the processes of community among their stakeholders: wholeness, integrity, stewardship, and morality. Spiritual leadership is seen here as a dynamic, interactive process. Successful leadership in the new American workplace, therefore, is dependent on a recognition that leadership is a relationship, not a skill or a personal attribute. Leaders are leaders only as far as they develop relationships with their followers, relationships that help all concerned to achieve their spiritual, as well as economic and social, fulfillment.

4 out of 5 stars Can "spirituality" and "steward" replace "profit "and boss........2000-06-23

Gilbert Fairholm's book is less a path than a tight rope into a potential new world where spiritual and material values are allies. Fairholm's book clearly indicates how the meaning of work for many American managers and workers extends beyond bringing bread to the table. His target audience is therefore the managers, owners, students and heads (perhaps even stockholders) of the businesses and corporations for which they work. The thin line he walks is between the prevailing mentality of the world of business today and the world of higher values that he wishes to introduce more directly into its everyday practices and understanding.

The task is not an easy one. Fairholm's book does a fine job of laying out a vast varitey of issues and approaches a "spiritually" inclined leadership could develop into practice as well as fundemental spirtual understanding, such as business a stewardship, that would represent the conceptual foundation for building such new corporate behavior.

Fairholm's greatest problem is one of translating spiritual concerns and approaches to the language of business as spoken today. The problem is that popular "business book speak" has taken some critical concepts such as "leadership" and "vision" and so watered them down that one wonders if the words are capable any longer to convey the deeper meanings to which Fairholm is striving to related. Some words, like "profit" are noticeable avoided as almost too incompatable to deal with.

In the end this book deserves a good reading as a serious attempt to begin discussion of a major reorientation of work as we understanbd it today. To carry this cause futher, Fairholm, or others, may have to delve much deeper into the nature of not only "would be" spiritual organizations but the idea a spiritually friendly economic system as well.

It would be easy to superficailly dismiss Fairholm's book as a noble but unrealistic attempt to recast an anvil with an angel. To resist such quick dismissal it might be useful to reflect on the extent to which the United States was in fact established by execuitve personailites and men of commerce with deep spiritual commitments both personal and social. In this regards the revolution lurching behind Fairholm's facade of business talk may be less a future revolution than a call for a re-expression of an enduring if often obscured aspect of America. Fairholm book deserves reading as a first step out of the shadows of our present excessively ego based economic and managerial systems. Take the chance and walk the tight-rope with him

Book Description

The new emphasis on spirituality in the workplace has been widely discussed in recent years and reported in major publications such as the Wall Street Journal and Fortune. Spirituality seems to be a basic human good essential for human flourishing. The contributors to this volume are all proponents of spirituality in the workplace, yet all raise important questions about this movement and what it means. What are the moral questions that should guide leaders? Is spirituality being treated as simply an instrumental good, valued for its usefulness in enhancing productivity and well-being? What are the responsibilities of business leaders? Of business schools and their faculty? Of churches? The essayists in this collection reflect on these and other pertinent questions.

The common thread linking these authors is that all have distinguished themselves in their respective fields or professions and all wish to advance spirituality in business. Contributors to Business, Religion, and Spirituality provide a sober, but positive, prognosis for this new growth in spirituality while offering direction for the future.

Book Description

The world’s leading expert on reversing soil desertification shows how ecology can flourish only when spiritual elements are present

• Uses a parable from the African oral tradition to provide a living testimony of what has been lost with the rise of modern technology

• Provides a vital account of the strong relationship between soil and soul and how this relationship can be restored

As in the Heart, So in the Earth is a strong indictment of a civilization that, while seeking domination over the earth, mutilates, tortures, and desacralizes it. For Pierre Rabhi ecology is inseparable from spirituality. He shows how the growing desertification of North Africa is a reflection of the “desert” that is claiming the hearts and souls of the inhabitants of the Western world--how dead soil is mirrored in our deadened souls--and how reconciliation with Mother Earth must be accompanied by relearning our ancestors’ reverence for the soil.

Using a traditional African parable grounded in the very wisdom of the earth, Pierre Rabhi seeks to initiate the reader into a time when the people that dwelled on this planet did so harmoniously and could converse easily with the land. Village elder Tyemoro recounts the gradual destruction of his village’s culture and all that has sustained it as the miracles promised by modern technology brought more harm than good. This same drama is recurring throughout the world, where indigenous value systems that have endured for millennia are torn apart by contact with modern civilization. Yet Rahbi offers hope--if those in the modern world will stop to hear the words of their ancestors who worked the land, for our destiny is linked irrevocably to that of the earth.

5 out of 5 stars A powerful parable.......2006-10-03

Pierre Rabhi joins the ranks of great agro-ecologists such as Vandana Shiva, Wendell Barry, or Mansanobu Fukuoka. As an American journalist said on hearing of Rabhi, "An Arab ecologist? Thank God there's at least one!"

In this book, Rabhi tries a fictionalized approach, spinning a folk tale of modern Africa. Perhaps this will catch the world's imagination better than presentations of scientific evidence or documentation of alternative farming projects. A short quote illustrates the obvious dream:

"The village of Mafi fully deserved its reputation. Staring at this swath of greenery and life in the midst of a desert environment, I reflected how little we measure the miracles that can arise from generous intelligence and constructive will. Not only did this green island emanate a palpable sense of well-being, it ennobled the arid country around it. Much of its landscaping followed the principles of antierosion, and many young trees now grew there. This place was a message of hope carved in the very flesh of death. Now I understood better what was meant by the sickness of the earth and how it is possible for humans to transform themselves from destructive parasites to healers." (p. 127)

5 out of 5 stars Leads readers to ideas of planetary harmony and connections with the land.......2006-09-09

Pierre Rabhi's As In The Heart, So In The Earth: Reversing The Desertification Of The Soul And The Soil blends ecology with spirituality, explaining how the growing desertification of North Africa reflects the desolation claiming the hearts and souls of the Western world and how dead soil mirrors dead souls. A traditional African parable leads readers to ideas of planetary harmony and connections with the land, and comes from Rabhi's southern Algeria roots and involvement in agri-ecology with many world organizations.

5 out of 5 stars Most Practical, Most Inspiring book on Money I've read!.......2002-12-09

I love self-improvement books, and I've just recently gotten interested in improving my financial well-being. Although I've enjoyed Rich Dad, Poor Dad, and am now working with the One-Minute Millionaire, this book should be required reading before them both!

Written very clearly, with lovely personal touches throughout, this book focuses on practical exercises and skills to put to use right away. Real Wealth helped me look at my beliefs and habits around money, and then helped me form a real plan about how to do things differently. I love the balance of spiritual and practical application Robinson uses, and somehow he has motivated me to actually DO what he suggests!

Time for you to make a change? Then let this book be your first step!

    Book Description

Studies show that nearly 90% of managers and executives in North America alone are seeking ways to integrate ethical and spiritual values into their organizations--while remaining skeptical of New Age thinking, dogmatic religions, cults, and moralizing intolerance. Pauchant's book emerges from a forum on International Management, Ethics, and Spirituality, the first of its kind to be held at an internationally recognized business school, and represents the thinking of six CEOs and six scholars of ethics and spirituality from Australia, Canada, the United States, and Switzerland. With case studies from five organizations in banking, food, health, education, and municipal governance, as well as dialogues culled from the remarks of 200 academic and business practitioners, this book proves that there is a true search for meaning in today's organizations, one which inevitably leads to a search for ethics and spirituality. Managers in search of these desiderata need help. This book suggests that a model proposed by Ken Wilber provides that help. Direct, concrete, theoretically and scientifically rigorous, and with an openness to inter-religious and non-religious viewpoints alike, the book is a compelling, non-didactic contribution to a vital discussion, long-needed but seldom found in a world as governed by economic values as our own.
