4 out of 5 stars Ja wohl!.......2007-05-20

I am grateful to Patrick Schmidt for having placed in my hands a copy of the third edition of his book on Understanding American and German Business Cultures: A Manager's Guide to the Cultural Context in which American and German Companies Operate. As is so often the case at SIETAR Congresses, we exchanged some goodies in the hotel lobby in Sofia, and I hope Patrick found mine as good as I found his.

While not a new publication, Patrick's book is nonetheless a very solid, simple, and useful expose of the cultural differences between the way we operate when working with each other and why, despite our best efforts we fall short of pleasing each other and fall into annoyances often over what often look like small matters.

Whether you are German or USian, you can get a good quick profile of your own culture to the degree that you subscribe to it--and most of us do at some level even when we want to rebel against it. This is not a comprehensive cultural study but a practical one, at the interface of how we work together, our sense of what work is, our work habits.

Schmidt addresses the most salient issues in how we communicate at work (and elsewhere, of course). What we understand and how we need to listen to understand as well as to present to each other in a way that we can understand are all dealt with in a matter of fact way with occasional excursions into the historical and psychologically whys. He provides an overview of such things as values, lawsuits and ethics across borders, and a discussion format about for exploring what it takes to be interculturally competent--and all this in less than 100 pages.

Appendixed to the manual are brief, incisive case studies from real life with analysis and likely interpretations. Like life itself, this treatment leaves the door open to engagement and learning on the part of those who use it. Updated several times, it shows the author's commitment to continued learning and exploration of the topic. I will find it an immediate resource for class work and training.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best books about the topic !.......2003-01-28

I'm German, but I have lived for some years in Maryland.

While I don't agree with every detail, I think most of the stated analyisis is true.

After reading plenty of books about German and American culture, I recommend this book as one (perhaps the) best about this issue in the market.

Even the book provided evidence about in the book mentioned cultural differences because it is much more sophicated and detailed than American books usually are.

4 out of 5 stars Great primer for newcomers, helpful to practitioners.......2001-09-03

The book is a great resource for any newcomer to the subject(s) at hand. For those of us with actual hands-on experience in dealing with both, German and U.S. culture, the book is very helpful as it solidifies and/or corrects one's own perceptions and impressions.

4 out of 5 stars Uncovering semi-conscious attitudes.......2000-03-27

An edifying and amusing examination of the different business methods and attitudes to personal relations in the two countries. An eye-opener to the inbuilt assumptions which cause so many misunderstandings in professional and social life. A "must" for businesspeople who want to be global players.

3 out of 5 stars Very funny stereotypical stuff.......2000-03-15

I had to laugh when the author told us that one of the worse insults an American can give is someone is 'a total bore'. Otherwise, this book points out some interesting comparisons and contrasts between German and American cultures.

Book Description

An insider's guide to understanding and eliminating accounting fraud
How do these high-profile accounting scandals occur and what could have been done to prevent them. Hidden Financial Risk fills that void by examining methods for off balance sheet accounting, with a particular emphasis on special purpose entities (SPE), the accounting ruse of choice at Enron and other beleaguered companies. J. Edward Ketz identifies the incentives for managers to deceive investors and creditors about financial risk and also shows investors how to protect their investments in a world filled with accounting and auditing frauds.
J. Edward Ketz, PhD (State College, PA) is MBA Faculty Director and Associate Professor of Accounting at Penn State's Smeal College of Business. He has been cited in the press nearly 300 times since Enron's bankruptcy, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post.. He has a regular column in Accounting Today.

4 out of 5 stars Competent analysis of off balance sheet accounting.......2005-10-26

An expert describes some the main devices used to distort financial information for public consumption, focusing on those which hide debt. I found it both informative and highly readable. Some background in business accounting is helpful but not necessary for the reader.

5 out of 5 stars Accounting for the Investor.......2003-08-03

While experts wring hands and say "mistakes were made," this book gives average investors the "how to" in order to make sense of annual reports and balance sheets. It seems to blow the lid off of the various methods that managers used to hide bad debt and shaking investments. Undoubtly, good for most investors who want to avoid a repeat of Enron. It also offers a pretty explanation of why major accounting and auditing firms can't be trusted. At last, a book that allows investors to keep their investments and earn money--instead of CEOs and corporate executives. Favorite Chapter: How to Hide Debt with Pension Accounting.

    Book Description

Why do leaders fail ethically? In this book, Terry L. Price uses a multi-disciplinary approach to an understanding of immorality in the public, private, and non-profit sectors. He argues that leaders can know that a certain kind of behavior is generally required by morality but still be mistaken as to whether the relevant moral requirement applies to them in a particular situation and whether others are protected by this requirement. Price demonstrates how leaders make exceptions of themselves, explains how the justificatory force of leadership gives rise to such exception-making, and develops normative protocols that leaders should adopt.

      Book Description

Is science amoral? Are scientists ethical? Why is the pathway to solving important scientific problems commonly so tortuous? Can unorthodox ideas get a fair trial from the scientific establishment? How do religion and politics influence science education today? What role does serendipity play in science? What are some of the obstacles to scientific progress? How do great ideas originate? Are the people who make scientific discoveries always given the full credit they deserve? Does science history repeat itself? To what extent does fraud occur in science and why would researchers engage in it?

Questions like these are not commonly raised let alone discussed in high school or college classrooms. Yet gaining a deeper understanding and appreciation of science by attempting to confront these vital concerns might go a long way toward reducing popular misperceptions about science while improving science literacy among the general public, a challenge issued to all scientists by leading educators.

Geneticist and science historian William D. Stansfield presents a popular overview of the major ethical and philosophical issues confronting science today. From concern about the welfare of experimental animals to a consideration of the many kinds of impediments that slow the progress of science--religious, moral, political, and conceptual--each chapter conveys an appreciation for the work that scientists do and the obstacles that stand in their way. Stansfield considers such intriguing issues as human experimentation, fetal-cell research, animal rights, cold fusion, the influence of religion and politics on science, the role that accidental discoveries play in science, and the crucial role of honesty versus fraud in scientific research.

Debunking the popular stereotype of science as a dry, antiseptic exercise, Stansfield compellingly describes the fascinating, very human struggle for truth that makes science the most important enterprise of our time.

      5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book!.......2002-02-09

I love this book. It gives practical help for faith in finances. It enabled us to purchase 40 acres of country property with cash. I gave my copy away and need to replace it! The bottom line is that God loves you. He wants to bless you. He is WELL able to bless you. He WILL bless you if you just get ahold of the principles that he sets forth in His Word, the Bible. The price is a tiny investment for a world of wealth and blessing.

5 out of 5 stars Use it to get your priorities and finances in order.......2001-02-09

This book has revolutionized our finances. It's a quick read--just one day. It's simple and easy to understand. I highlighted relevant phrases and can thumb through it every so often just to renew my mind with the Word on finances. We use the prayers to pray over our own tithes and offerings. Each time I read it it bolsters my faith once again to receive God's prosperity, so we can help get the Word out to others. Another terrific offering from Brother Copeland.

5 out of 5 stars A must must read if you want to Understand true Prosperity.......1997-11-22

My sister inlaw let us read it. I was not sure if it would be that great by what she was telling us about it. Don't get me wrong my sister inlaw really enjoyed the book and she wanted us to read it because she know it would help us. It's just she did not know how to sale it. But If you really want to get a hold of your finances and get out of debt for good. This is the book to read. It show how God wants us to prosper. Managing GOD'S Mutual Funds, show you in an easy to understand step by step instructions using the word of GOD each step of the way. IT'S SO GOOD I HAD TO GET TWO; ONE FOR US, AND ONE FOR MY PASTOR. I hope that he use it for a study lasson for the whole church so we all can be bless from GOD. Just read it , you'll see what I mean.

        Book Description

Bringing a fresh perspective to the evaluation of management problems, this book scrutinizes the influence managers have on employees’ understanding. It considers how managers use ideas and visions to frame their employees’ internalized understanding of the external rules and instructions that govern their work. The book brings an interpretative perspective to the question of individual and group competence and looks at how this is linked with understanding. The book refers throughout to international case studies and considers the cross-cultural impact on management and understanding at work.

This book is written for advanced undergraduate and graduate students interested in Leadership, Human Resource Management, Human Resource Development, Organizational Behavior and Organizational Theory.

Leaking landfills, oil contamination, illegal waste disposal, and pervasive air pollution . . . Today's managers and policy makers face a multitude of environmental challenges, choices, and opportunities. Some work in the public or private sectors. Some are regulators or regulated. Whether they are environmental specialists or not, managers must understand scientifically complex environmental mandates and shifting ambiguities in order to address them proactively. They must not only cultivate organizational awareness of environmental values, but also remain committed to engaging in these values.

The authors of Managing for the Environment draw from their extensive managing, consulting, and research experiences to give managers, elected officials, students, and concerned citizens the tools they need to address environmental issues effectively.

Authoritative, insightful, and the first of its kind to take a strategic management view, this book:

          Book Description

This book is a study of the core issues in the field of business ethics from both an historical and a systematic standpoint. It analyzes corporate social responsibility, stakeholders, ethical codes, corporate cultures, and other issues. But the analysis takes place within a framework specially designed by the author in order to integrate the various dimensions of present-day business ethics. This integration is linked to an interpretation of business ethics as an organizational learning process in the context of the social and cultural changes caused by the emergence of a knowledge society. This approach makes it possible to adopt a focus and language, which can simultaneously take into account ethical concerns and corporate and organizational development. A previous version of the book (written in Catalan) was awarded the 1998 Joan Sardà Dexeus prize for best book on corporate economics by the Catalan Association of Economists.

            Product Description

The product of a unique collaboration between a leading forensic accountant and a distinguished expert in classical philosophy, Understanding Accounting Ethics is widely admired for its "virtue-based" approach to professionalism in accountancy. This new text, substantially expanded and revised, is well-suited to serve as the primary textbook for a course or module in ethics, or as a supplementary text to any course in accounting. New and valuable features of the second edition include: adherence to the recent IFAC four-part framework for accounting ethics education (knowledge, perception, judgment, development); fully updated discussions of Enron and WorldCom, including trials and sentencing; real-life case studies drawn from forensic practice; ample quotations from members of the Accounting Hall of Fame, emphasizing the inherently ethical nature of accounting; practical advice for "how accounting ethics can be taught" to individuals and within firms; expanded bibliographies; and helpful questions for discussion and for further research after each chapter. Understanding Accounting Ethics explores such questions as: the distinction between a business and a profession; why accounting is a profession, not a business; why accounting as a profession is inherently ethical; accountancy's essential orientation to truth; why "rules are not enough"; and how codes of professional conduct for accountants are rooted in the virtues of an accountant.

Business Basics Bestseller 1: The Easy, Interesting, Open-book Look at the Game of Business Numbers! 2nd Edition

When you seek to understand business, you can go with the long version or the short version. If you never had the financial side of a business explained to you before, you could consider "Business Basics Bestseller 1" as a 150 page starting point. This is not a suggestion that you substitute it for this book, just that you check it out as well. The BBB #1 book was written by a guy who teaches this stuff to everyone from shop floor employees to directors in companies. He's got a practical insight on how to get the right points across in a very entertaining way.

BBB #1 will introduce you to the basics of business including the terms behind the numbers and where all the financial statements and formulas come from. That's a big help before you plow into a full-fledged business text. Search for "Business Basics Bestseller 1" and add it to your consideration. It can be one of your best investments. At less than 150 pages, you can enjoyably zip through it.

4 out of 5 stars Worthwhile elementary text........2006-10-29

This book covers a lot of ground, so if it starts with some awfully basic stuff, that's okay. The only real complaint that I have is that the authors are a bit too rah-rah for my taste when discussing marketing, but then, that's probably par for the course; everybody who is into marketing tends to go overboard on the bubbly, fake energy. That, and the fact that they demonstrate an astounding lack of understanding of basic arithmetic when they assert that "while saving 2% by paying a bill early may not sound like much, doing it over the course of a year will save you 24%".
