5 out of 5 stars Something for Everyone.......2007-10-04

Having been diagnosed very late in life a few years ago, I constantly research materials that are simple, informative and practical. This book meets all criteria. In fact, I have given it to my therapist who really appreciates it and am now purchasing it for newly diagnosed friends or family members who have BP. It targets all audiences: newly diagnosed; experienced but needs some reminders; experienced but wants to review certain sections; and family members.

5 out of 5 stars Covers many different angles and stages of Bipolar.......2007-07-22

I wasn't sure what to expect when i ordered this book. A bipolar friend of mine suggested the book (not the workbook) written by Monica Ramirez Basco. I haven't read it yet but plan to. I think the workbook is great. It is a great way to learn to retrain the way you think. There are parts of the workbook that apply to me right now, parts that I've already been through and will probably not read, and parts about things I haven't dealt with yet too. It's one of those things that will help you out now and you can pick it back up months/years later and it will help you again.

3 out of 5 stars Better for Bipolar I patients, than Bipolar II........2007-07-11

It seems to be much more for Bipolar I sufferers. I have Bipolar II and much of the material in the book didn't really apply to me. Though I'm sure it would be good if one had bipolar II, and I'm still working through the book in the areas that do apply to me.

5 out of 5 stars VERY intensive and extensive........2007-06-22

I can't say this book is easy to do. Usually I rush through workbooks, but this one I am doing less than 20 pages every other day so its wisdom sinks in. After 15 years diagnosed Bipolar 2 you'd think I know myself and the illness's impact. I obviously didn't. It was really scary at first, writing about how the illness has affected my life and those around me and really thinking about my specific symptoms. When I am well, my husband says I live like I have no illness, which creates problems later. Now I know that I have to change my "good day" living to prevent "bad day" nightmares. It's pretty harsh to tally up the toll the illness has taken and the small and large changes I have to make in my life. But the book IS a God send for it really allows me to see my triggers and what causes stress for me and how to live more sensibly. It is like taking a mirror and seeing the illness in bright light around me and finding ways to keep it small and managable. It's made me more realistic about my limitations so I'll stay safe and sane. (I hate knowing I have limitations!) Honestly, it covers everything, from reasons you create for NOT killing yourself when depressed or psychotic to REAL help on weight loss. There isn't one part of the illness that it does not address and force you to check if it is a part of your life, and if so, how to handle it when it rears its ugly head. Slowly, I feel like I can control a lot more than I thought I could. Before I let the illness throw me like a rag doll in a tornado. Now I see the responsibility I have to myself and my loved ones to prevent or manage episodes and the book totally makes that possible. If I have to have limits at least I can control them a lot more than I thought. It just takes a willingness to really see the damage and how to head it off at the pass. If you aren't ready for REAL WORK, get another book that let's you stay a victim. If you are ready to deal with the reality of what you face, buy this NOW.

Book Description

The most widely used medical ethics textbook today, Munson's INTERVENTION AND REFLECTION is the standard for this course. A collection of the most up to date and influential positions within the most pressing contemporary debates in medical ethics, this book provides students with the most comprehensive and authoritative introduction to the subject as well as a wide variety of cases to study. The combination of Munson?s astute editing (which gives priority to non-technical readings), a wide variety of cases provided alongside the social contexts in which they arise, and insightful commentaries makes this book accessible and provocative to students with no formal philosophical training as well as to students with more formal experience in philosophy and/or the medical professions.

4 out of 5 stars An Encylopedic Approach to Bioethics.......2007-01-05

I am a professor who teaches Bioethics, primarily to college nursing students. I have used many textbooks over the years and have reviewed dozens. I have used Munson's text for the last 3 years. This particular edition is his strongest yet. Potential readers should be aware that Munson takes an encylopedic approach to the field. Each chapter includes a focus case, additional cases, ethical analysis, survey of the context, and a selection of articles written by bioethicists that cover a variety of opionions on the issue. This approach has both its strengths and its drawbacks. On the positive side, Munson's text is an excellent resource for faculty who wish to reduce the course to a single text. There is very little need to supplement the text in any way.

But the encylopedic approach has its drawbacks. First, each chapter is very long and slow to read. I have found resistance from students to read entire chapters. The next time I use the text I will direct the students to particular sections within the chapters. Second, and more problematic, the text is rather undeveloped in its moral theory. Munson confines his explict moral reasoning to a specific section in each chapter, often devoting no more than a short paragraph to each school of thought. In addition, Munson only rarely takes a position on these issues himself. Without a central guiding moral vision or approach, students are often left bewildered and perplexed about what to think of these issues themselves.

In the end, I believe that the strengths of Munson's text outweigh its shortcomings, though professors who are considering this volume should be aware that they will need to do a lot of focusing of class discussions.

Book Description

The definitive account of the Everests of mathematics--the seven unsolved problems that define the state of the art in contemporary math.

In 2000, the Clay Foundation announced a historic competition: whoever could solve any of seven extraordinarily difficult mathematical problems, and have the solution acknowledged as correct by the experts, would receive $1 million in prize money. There was some precedent for doing this: In 1900 the mathematician David Hilbert proposed twenty-three problems that set much of the agenda for mathematics in the twentieth century. The Millennium Problems--chosen by a committee of the leading mathematicians in the world--are likely to acquire similar stature, and their solution (or lack of it) is likely to play a strong role in determining the course of mathematics in the twenty-first century. Keith Devlin, renowned expositor of mathematics and one of the authors of the Clay Institute's official description of the problems, here provides the definitive account for the mathematically interested reader.

5 out of 5 stars Seven of the greatest mathematical problems.......2007-05-13

If you want to know about seven of the most difficult unsolved math problems for which the Clay Mathematics Institute offers 1 million dolars a piece to whoever can solve them, this is the right book. Actually, we might talk about six unsolved problems since Perelman apparently solved the famous Poincaré conjecture.

A quite readable account for someone who has some training in math.

4 out of 5 stars The best that could be done in a linear medium.......2007-01-19

This compromise between the desire to be comprehensible to a wide audience, and to describe aspects of highly abstract mathematics, works better than one might expect, but it is still a compromise. (I skipped years of school and took my Math degree at London University too immature to be successful.)

In my opinion, the only way this (book)/project could have been successful would have been for the Clay Institute to have commissioned a website with home pages for each of the problems, and a large web of explanatory pages for the various mathematical concepts involved.

There was one place I thought the author (no doubt overwhelmed with the purely mathematical difficulties of the task he had set himself) missed an opportunity to be clear. His Navier-Stokes equations describe a perfectly incompressible fluid. Clearly this is a mathematical abstraction - the speed of sound in such a fluid would be greater than the speed of light, indeed infinite. I think the whole thing would have been clearer if he had noted that the real question to be answered is "are the equations for an incompressible fluid a useful approximation to the behaviour of a real fluid, or does the attempt to approximate inevitably lead to nonsense?". Attempts to simulate multi-body gravitational interactions on a PC screen, for example, seem easy to program, but simple programs that calculate forces at an instant and then step positions forward a finite time, inevitably lead to all the particles eventually shooting off the screen, simply because two particles very close together at the instant have mometary huge forces on them, and the approximation that the force is constant over a step is then nonsensical. So far, the Navier-Stokes equations seem to fail in the same way. The question is, can this be fixed? At least that's my understanding, but it does not come through in this book.

4 out of 5 stars Good reading for non-experts .......2006-09-09

It is probably impossible to satisfy everyone when writing a book about modern mathematics: no matter how good the book, some readers are bound to find it too primitive, while others will be hopelessly lost. The author seems to have tried to find the middle ground, perhaps a little on the "simple" side. A professional mathematician would probably find this book far too elementary; as a chemist, I found it educational. In places, it goes on and on about elementary concepts instead of progressing quickly to something more advanced. But overall, it was a good and stimulating reading that provided a glimpse of contemporary mathematics. Recommended if you are a non-mathematician with an interest in mathematics.

4 out of 5 stars hard math made interesting..........2006-06-17

This week I finished reading The Millennium Problems, by Keith Devlin. It's a look into seven of the hardest, unsolved mathematics issues we have on our hands today. A prize for solving any of these puzzles has been offered by the Clay Mathematics Institute, offering one million dollars to anyone who solves or resolves any of them.

Devlin's book is a math populizer, and he does his best to illustrate the seven puzzles in question. They are:

1. The Riemann Hypothesis, which asks if there is a pattern to the distribution of the prime numbers, related to the zeta function.
2. Yang-Mills Theory and the Mass Gap Hypothesis, which would help us understand why the electron has mass.
3. The P vs. NP problem, which seeks to understand the types of problems that computers can analyze, by trying to determine whether problems can be broken up into two groups: easy to find an answer (P), vs. easy to check the answer (NP).
4. The Navier-Stokes Equations, which are differential equations governing fluid dynamics, but don't have known general solutions.
5. The Poincare Conjecture which is a toplogical problem for 4-dimensional objects, asking the question as to whether the surface of a four-dimensional sphere is simply connected.
6. The Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture, which relates to whether a particular class of equations have solutions.
7. The Hodge Conjecture, which is a rather complicated piece of work in analytic geometry.

I have to be honest...while I followed the explanations given in the book for the last two, I know I have no hope of explaining them. The author does his best with the material, but he even admits that those two problems are rather obtuse.

All in all, it's a good book, for the mathematically inclined. The author provides good explanations for the problems, illustrating their histories, and the stories of those folks who originated the problems. Check it out...but only if math is your bag, baby.

2 out of 5 stars An uneven account.......2005-11-28

As the author himself relays many times in the introduction, it is not the easiest task to explain to lay readers the forefront of mathematical research (or for that matter, the forefront of any academic discipline). However tried the author did, and in my opinion failed to convey the fundamental issues.

History is always a good place to start from when describing a problem. And the author excels in putting together the many strands of history leading up to the seven millennium problems. But history in itself cannot be sufficient in itself without describing the actuals. For instance in a chapter describing the Navier-Stokes theorem the author bluntly writes down the differential equation for users to read. Yes, specialists will relate to them, but for the lay readers? The chapter on Hodge's conjecture is even worse. The author acknowledges honestly there that he has no means to explain in lay terms the question in hand. In such case shouldn't the chapter be expanded to attempt to explain instead of just stating that there is no easy way? How else would writing a book on such topic be justified?

Even in the better chapters (the chapter on Riemann's hypothesis for e.g.) the disconnect between the good historical material and the lack of description for the real problem are evident. The book should either have been written for professional mathematicians or, if intended for general readers, should have limited its scope to things the author found clear-cut methods to explain. I admire the author's attempt, but as it is, the book appears uneven and incomplete.

5 out of 5 stars Reinhold Niebuhr's genius is simply unparalleled.......2007-01-09

I am a HUGE Niebuhr fan, and I strong suggest that anyone interested in politics, economics, social philosophy and/or theology should pick up as many of his works as possible. This book was a real treat for me, to get into peer into his mind in those oh so important formative years as a pastor in Detroit, WOW!

Even when he's just writing random thoughts on the passing scene, he's a fantastic writer. Here you have a demonstration of Bonhoeffer's views of the true Christian life which must "share in the problems of secular life, and teach all men what it means to live in Christ". You see the greater and greater emphasis on the role of repentence and the way Christ's oh so rigorous ethic acts as a judgment on all human behavior as time goes on. This will all become so important as he turns his mind to writing his great theological and social works in the 30's and 40's.

This book is a fairly easy read, none to technical, and relatively short, you can probably read it in 3 or 4 sittings. Pay attention to the way Niebuhr's doubts about his own position become theological fare, informing the way he thinks about theology and life in toto.

5 out of 5 stars A huge help through the early years of ministry.......2004-12-22

This little gem was probably my favorite book from seminary. Niebuhr takes you with him on the difficult journey through the first years of his parish ministry and teaches you how to think theologically about really practical dilemmas that arise as a clergyperson. My favorite thing about the book is that it is not written as a memoir, but in the moment, so you don't have an old, brilliant theologian reflecting on his years in ministry, but rather a young, brilliant pastor who doesn't know all the answers and doesn't pretend to. I feel like Reinhold has become a close friend though the end of seminary and my first year working in the church, because he gives words to and insight into many of the struggles I have had.

5 out of 5 stars Green, alive and leafy.......2003-05-27

Reinhold Niebuhr's small book, Leaves from the Notebook of a Tamed Cynic, is perhaps his most famous and popular book. It has informed and helped to shape the lives and ministries of seminarians, educators, ministers and other prophetic and ethical people since it was first published early in this century. Niebuhr recounts with astonishing honesty the difficulties facing those who would do ministry, and act ethically, in the church today. His criticism is not held back from any sacred topics.

`I make no apology for being critical of what I love. No one wants a love which is based upon illusions, and there is no reason why we should not love a profession and yet be critical of it.'

Niebuhr talks about the shock of coming to realise the limitations of his ministry, going from being a fresh-from-seminary full-of-grace minister to a person confronting another person in the 'real world'. He talks about

`...the difficulty of acting as priest. It is not in your power to determine the use of a symbol. Whether it is a blessing or a bit of superstition rests altogether with the recipient.'

This real world also presents problems. Parishioners tend to ask practical questions, rather than theoretical ones. They ask, Why won't Jesus heal me? Didn't he heal others? It is in the Bible, after all.

`I do believe that Jesus healed people. I can't help but note, however, that a large proportion of his cures were among the demented.'

He talks about the practical limitations of doing ethical ministry and prophesy for the average pulpit preacher.

`I am not surprised that most prophets are itinerants. Critics of the church think we preachers are afraid to tell the truth because we are economically dependent upon the people of our church. There is something in that....'

Finally, Niebuhr comes to have realistic expectations of the church and his own ministry in it.

`The church is like the Red Cross service in war time. It keeps life from degenerating into a consistent inhumanity, but it does not materially alter the fact of the struggle itself. The Red Cross neither wins the war nor abolishes it.'

Niebuhr in this small work has given great insight. Barely 150 short pages of his journal from 1915-1928 as a parish minister--although he became much better known as a philosopher in later years, this book is most likely his best seller, and the one with the most profound day-to-day impact for his readers.

A must-read for anyone with a calling to ministry; a should-read for anyone in a helping and caring profession. It gives insight into how to remain human and fallible in the face of a congregation's (and one's own!) expectations of holiness and godly perfection.

5 out of 5 stars As Applicable Today as When Written.......2002-07-27

This is a collection of Neibuhrs short essays. Each one stands on its own as a reflection of reality as applicable today as it was decades ago. I like it so much I am rationing it, reading one or two essays a day and stopping to think about the lesson in each one. These are sermons that are not "preachy" recognizing the human frailities and what should be expected of us. A book for the ages in my opinion

5 out of 5 stars A Growing Pastor's Vision.......2001-11-17

In this marvelous book, which has graced my library for more than forty years, Professor Niebuhr shows himself as a young pastor who grows into his Detroit working "man's" parish. He courageously confronts his struggles, inward and outward.

He writes with a wit that I didn't always find in his more explicitly theological writings. I particularly identified with an early observation, "It is easier to speak sagely from the pulpit than to act wisely in the detailed tasks of the parish."

Another early observation shows him realizing what most of us must experience in our youthful ministries, when he speaks of repeating himself in the pulpit, noting, "A prophet speaks only when he is inspired. The parish preacher mus speak whether he he is inspired or not. I wonder whether it is possible to live on a high enough plane to do that without sinning against the Holy Spirit."

I would whole-heartedly recommend this book for any young pastor.

Book Description

T.V. watchers will be familiar with Ratzinger's famous clarion call for unwavering truth in a time of changing values. In this book of recent material, Ratzinger addresses these and other pressing social questions of our day.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Man's Search for Freedom.......2007-07-16

Ratzinger's reason for writing this book is found most cogently stated in the epilogue when he notes, "Man feels truly free, truly himself, only when he has got rid of God." He wrote this book to combat that error, to point out the historical developments of various political movements and to urgently demonstrate the need for God and the role of faith in modern life. This is not novel ground, even Ratzinger as then cardinal and now as Pope Benedict XVI has made similar remarks. Yet what makes this book unique is it's focus on man's departure from God, how it came about and the urgency for a return. I would hardly say it's his best book, but he is a phenomenal writer and it's well worth reading.

3 out of 5 stars A noble effort, but leaves me wanting more.......2007-04-10

This is a small volume of essays, on moral and political topics. In it, Pope Benedict XVI continues to explore a theme which has often concerned him: the threat posed by secularism and moral relativism to the future of the West, and particularly to the future of Europe.

As always, Benedict is a superlative writer and thinker. He is one of the world's foremost intellectuals, in any field, and everything that he writes is worth reading. The Church is truly blessed to have so gifted a leader, particularly coming after the extraordinary leadership of John Paul the Great.

At the same time, I have to say that Benedict's political writing is a bit disappointing to me. He tends to focus on the negative. Europe is falling apart, because it has lost its Christian roots. The "European sickness" has lead to a drastic decline in the birth rate, a loss of will to defend European values against attack and a general sense of self-loathing, self-indulgence and of giving up on the future.

I agree, but: (a) at this point, I heard it before; (b) I would like to have more insight into WHY Europe has gone in this direction; and (c) I would like more and better ideas about how to turn things around. Unlike the sunny optimism of John Paul, Benedict seems to take a very black view of the European future. Like Reagan, John Paul always used to feel that our best days our ahead of us; Benedict seems to feel that things are falling apart, and there is not a whole lot anybody can do about it. He may be right, but I would like a bit more optimism from the high command.

And this leads to another problem that I have with Benedict's political thought. His focus is entirely European. I do not think he has a good grip on world politics, considered as a whole. A useful contrast is with Mark Steyn's book, American Alone. Steyn is far from an optimist, in any sense of the word, but he is very clear that, while Europe is going down the drain, America is doing far better, in every sense of the word.

Benedict retains this European idea that America is an "outlaw" nation, because it does not listen to "world opinion", meaning, of course, Western European opinion. I think what this analysis misses is that "world opinion" so defined is so filled with weakness and self-hatred that, were America to listen to it, America would be paralyzed. If America is to remain an effective moral actor on the world stage, we can not listen to Europe, because, candidly, Europe is ALWAYS opposed to effective action.

I am sorry to see the Pope buy this nonsense that somehow multilateral action, particularly when based upon European or UN supports, is morally superior to unilateral American action. Hey, as a practical matter, America needs all the allies it can get, but, as a moral matter, I can not see how any serious person can think that the UN or the European Union is a moral authority compared to America. Sorry, but the UN and the European Union sat there and did nothing throughtout all of the Balkan Wars, Rwanda, Darfur and all the rest of it. The reality is, whenever there is genocide or dictatorial abuse in the world, either the US intervenes or no one does. The US is not perfect, but it sometimes acts effectively in favor of the world moral order. Europe never does.

Benedict, it seems to me, does not undertand that the European sickness has not afflicted America as badly as it has Europe. Yes, we have our share of self-loathing types, and of morally decadent, self-indulgent people, but they do not define America. Our birth rate remains the highest of any of the industrialized nations. Our economic growth rate is far higher than that of Europe. Compared to Europe, America retains a great deal of self-confidence and faith in the future.

What accounts for the difference? A big reason is that we have a huge Fundamentalist Protestant population. America is not France, in large part, because we have the Bible Belt, and they voted in Reagan and now Bush.

This is an empirical fact, but it suggests a course of action. The Catholic Church should align itself more with fundamentalists and evangelicals. This little book is largely a cry for those who believe in traditional values to stand firm for the faith. Well, we have tens of millions of Christians who feel that way in America, but they are mostly not Catholics. Benedict would be a far more effective leader, if he would build more bridges to our brothers and sisters in Christ outside the Church. I appreciate that ecumenical outreach has been a big priority under both John Paul and Benedict. I suggest, however, that we ramp it up; Christians need unity now, more than ever. Also, it seems to me that most ecumenical outreach is toward what we call in America the "mainstream" Protestant churches, i.e. the big-name, high-status denominations like the Episcopalians and the Lutherans, whose churches are declining rapidly. We need ore outreach toward Baptists and other Evangelicals. They are the Christians whose churches have vitality.

5 out of 5 stars Defends the role traditional Judeo-Christian values in the world.......2007-02-04

Values in a Time of Upheaval is a title perfect for modern times: a discussion in which the author defends the role traditional Judeo-Christian values in the world. His survey of the Christian faith and its place in a changing modern society of competing values and religions makes for an excellent review of his ideas and solutions on world problems and is a recommended pick for any Christian spiritual library interested in dialogues surrounding contemporary issues.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Heavenly Father for giving the world Pope Benedict XVI .......2006-07-29

The insights Pope Benedict XVI gives to the world are brilliant. This book is one small example of his contribution to improving the life we all live. After reading it I am convinced that Ratzinger has been truly appointed to his position by the Holy Spirit.

I must first qualify myself as an average man, living an average life with an average intellect. I really feel I shouldn't be writing a review on such a brilliant book as this. Who am I to comment on the Popes work? That being said I will venture forward and try my best to do this book the justice it deserves and offer my observations.

This collection of writings is truly awe inspiring on many levels. The ideas and insights he writes about are so deep and meaningful on one hand, yet presented so clearly and thoughtfully that anyone can understand what he is saying. Most authors writing about complex topics make the writing so complicated only a few reads truly get it. Not with the Pope, I was able follow his crystal clear vision as he lead my heart and mind down a beautiful path of ideas about many important things: obviously religion, but also politics, money, power, life, family, work, values and the importance of God in all of our lives.

Being he is the leader of the Catholic Church and therefore Christian you may think his writings would be biased and one sided in this direction. But his thoughts and writings are not. He offers wonderful insights into all of the major religions of world with details of the possitive contributions they have made thoughtout man's development . He offers very positive ideas of how they can work together to improve the life of we are all living.

This book also does something most political writings fail to do. He is able to illustrate a very large societal problem, show its history and how it came to be a problem, and the offer direction for a solution. He never leaves you wondering his position on the subject. And even better he is able to do it in a very warm and loving way. Although the subjects he writes about are very large and complex it doesn't feel that way as you read the book. He has the rare ablity to make sense of big things.

This book, as well as many others by the Ratzinger, should be required reading for almost ever college student, particularly those going into politics, ethics and religion. It should also be `must read' for each and every member of the Catholic Church.

God bless bless the Pope!

    Book Description

With the exception of Experience and Nature, (Volume 1 of the Later Works), this volume contains all of Dewey’s writings for 1925 and 1926, as well as his 1927 book, The Public and Its Problems. A Modern Language Association’s Committee on Scholarly Editions textual edition.

The first essay in this volume, “The Development of American Pragmatism,” is perhaps Dewey’s best-known article of these years, emphasizing the uniquely American origins of his own philosophical innovations. Other essays focus on Dewey’s continuing investigation of the “nature of intelligent conduct,” as, for example, his debate with David Wight Prall on the underpinnings of value, his study of sense-perception, and his support for outlawing of war. Also appearing here are Dewey’s final articles on the culture of the developing world, written for the New Republic after his travels to China, Turkey, and Mexico.

5 out of 5 stars Modern Catholic Social Teaching: Content and Method Converge.......2006-11-10

Modern Catholic Social Teaching was written, as the chief editor Ken Himes notes, in a uniquely collaborative effort that, to my mind, epitomizes the best of Catholic values, stressing individual dignity, the value of tradition and the importance of communal, collaborative work. Each is well researched, well written and carefully argues its position. The essays are an excellent review of current Catholic thinking on a range of issues. My own area of interest and expertise is war and nonviolence; the commentary on "Pacem in Terris" by Drew Christiansen, SJ, is excellent and offers an in-depth look at Catholic teaching on war and nonviolence. In the final section of this compilation, an excellent essay by Todd Hollenbach reviews the just war and nonviolence traditions and points to some directions for further development in the future. Overall, I find this book a most useful resource (I am a Catholic peace activist and occasional tutor of Catholic social teaching in my parish) and a great wealth of material for reflection and prayer.

Modern Catholic Social Teaching: Commentaries & Interpretations is a collection of essays by respected experts in Catholic social ethics. An intensely scholarly text covering such topics as natural law in Catholic social teachings, early modern Roman Catholic social thought in 1740-1890, numerous commentaries on documents written by Popes such as "Populorum Progressio" (On the Development of Peoples) and "Gaudium et spes" (Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World), and much more, Modern Catholic Social Teaching examines texts and schools of thought both in the context of their era and the modern day. The theological ponderings are spelled out as succinctly as possible for such often complex concepts, in this excellent resource text for theological and historical students of Catholic tradition and instruction.

I am taking a gradute course in Catholic Social Teaching. I used this book in a research paper on the papal encyclical "Quadragesimo Anno." It is a wonderful resource that I plan to use again and again. It is very readable for the layman who just wants to understand our Catholic Social tradition better. I love this book!

    5 out of 5 stars A Theologian's View of Justice.......2007-04-11

Father Burghardt is a brillant Jesuit theologian who applies his wisdom and experience to today's serious social, religious, and environmental issues. His work should be included in the library of anyone concerned with questions of our responsibilities here on earth.

3 out of 5 stars Burghardt on Justice.......2007-03-09

Burghardt has a wonderful, compassionate heart for the marginalized. In Justice: A Global Adventure he seeks to raise the consciousness of Christians concerning the very real racial and socio-economic issues that we face in the U.S. The paradigm for his social ethic is rooted in Roman Catholic social teaching.

While he is well-intentioned in his efforts, much of his narrative, particularly the statistics, is one-sided and simplistic. In his rightful effort to give voice to the voiceless Burghardt fails to address some of the fair critiques of the "powerful."

For the purpose of raising consciousness of social justice issues, this is a fair primer. However, one should seek out other material, perhaps even from more conservative sources, in order to get a balanced perspective on social justice.

    Book Description

This is a book about action; what kind of action; how to gauge an action's effectiveness; whether or not one or more actions are complementary or mutually destructive; who should carry out the actions and when. French writer, thinker, and activist, Jean Ousset examines the fundamental questions of effective social action, such as ideology, people, resources, and how to evaluate conflicting principles. Anyone interested in effecting social change or studying modern social movements will find this both a compelling and unique work.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ce livre est tres bien........2002-11-02

Monsieur Ousset has written an excellent book for scholars who are convinced that a Catholic "Christian social doctrine" alone will effectively guide our contemporary global economy and intelligently support the "Social Reign of Jesus Christ" (pages 82, 39).

Sadly, we live at a time when selfish and "subversive" people use "dialectics" and "Communist methods" to destroy all relationships in society. "The Revolution ... pits class against class; the poor against the rich;" students again teachers; and children against parents (42, 45).

Curiously, these insights were expressed by Monsieur Ousset in France in 1966 and may be accurately applied to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Rome and other cities today. For example, according to Knox News, "A University of Tennessee fraternity was suspended because of an incident in which white members painted their faces to look like the black pop group The Jackson Five." Clearly, a basic Communist method was used by the University of Tennessee to exclude and ridicule some students from the school for phoney and shallow reasons. And like a Communist tyrant, the University provost will force the students to attend "a training program on race anddiversity" (Knoxnews.com, Oct. 31.02). Yes, the Communist tactics of yesterday's Eastern Europe are present today in Western America.

Fortunately, Ousset provides us thoughtful and loving people with a plan for action that will succeed. "Our task is not to destroy but to revitalize an existing social order, which still has valuable resources which it would be criminal to destroy or neglect." Ousset's counsel is supported by Demonsthenes who wrote, "It is still open to you to do what you have so far not done." Intellegent citizens can use Christian methods to move families, neighborhoods and countries from division toward unity and growth. "This is the only effective solution." (42, 82, 66).

Monsiuer Ousset (1914-94) is a profound scholar who unites a Catholic philosophy of social policy with a solid theory of praxis. The book is easy to read, introduces the reader to the Communist techniques of "revolutionary activity and subversive agitation," and gives tremendous encouragement for every citizen who hopes for the "Social Kingship" of God. Yes, we have our work cut out for us. As Pope Pius XII states, "It is time for intense effort, in which even a few moments can decide the victory" (45, 38). 021101
