The title to this book says it all literally. I was skeptical at first and I thought the title was just hype to sell the book but after reading half of it in one setting, I was totally wrong. For the average guy with basic knowledge on the subject, this book is sure to build on that. What I love most about this book is when you read about countermeasures and all that stuff you also learn about the measures taken by operators. It's all how you read the book. This book is very detailed and amusing at the same time. The things people plan against you are very well thought out. The countermeasures are also genius. Once again, the title holds great justice to the material inside. Furthermore, the tactics in this book are still being used today if this helps you when debating on purchasing this book.

This book is about detecting people who are following you, and observing your activities. It unfortunately does not cover countermeasures to other kinds of surveillance, such as video surveillance, which has become prevelant in our time.

Though it can get a bit dry at times, reading this book through is very well worth it. It covers a lot of material, whether it be foiling foot, vehicular, or technical surveillance attempts. Unlike some books that will include a few pages on eluding surveillance, listing techniques like "leave the TV on if you think you're bugged" or "make two right turns if you think you're followed" and leaving it at that, this one will provide you with more discreet and effective ways at accomplishing these goals.
It also offers insight on the mindset of your adversary, the survelliance operative. It is obvious that the authors are very knowledgeable in this field. So if you want to learn how to detect and elude surveillance like a smooth operative, this book is your one-stop solution.
How To Watch Your Backside?.......2000-04-21
In the ever changing "Information Age" in which we exist, more and more of us are voicing concerns about our fear of "Big Brother" and the amount of privacy that we can continue to maintain. With government agencies and pseudo-agencies, as well as more and more online businesses requesting more of our personal data, and storing this info in larger and larger databases, we all should be rightly alarmed and concerned. This book, I find, provides very helpful advice to the consumer on how to try and preserve their privacy while also making you aware of how others (crooks) are constantly looking for ways to pilfer your identity. While some areas of the book I did not consider to be detailed enough (particularly, areas on surveillance), overall, I considered the book to be very informative. However, be aware, that the everyday consumer is not the only one who may be reading this book!

The Philosphy of Economics.......2003-06-06
The most basic idea, that one person's equality is another's inequality, is explored in detail. Sen illuminates many of the flaws in standard economic thinking, and how the philosophical underpinnings of economics guide and distort economic reasoning.
Fantastic- and I don't agree with a word of it, either!.......2001-08-01
I read this book in one sitting, and let me say it is a great book.
It is odd so few books are written on such a basic philosophical question as equality, and reading mister Sen is akin to drinking a cold glass of water for a man in a desert of political philosophy.
The prose is somewhat weak, the stye is stilted, and that oddly only seems to add to mister Sens' achievement: I never get the feeling that when I turn the next page I will be bored or watch him say something unnecessarily pedantic. The whole book is carried solely by the interesting subject at hand and mister Sens endlessly excellent commentary on it.
That having been said, I agree with none of it. I do not value equality in any way, and my politics are thoroughly aristocratic and Old Right. So perhaps the possible reader should take that into account: I have nothing but praise for mister Sens books, and this book in particular is an excellent dive. Perhaps praise from a trenchant enemy is worth more than praise from the ideologically like minded.
I will be reading it and making notes and attacks on it for a year to come, at the very least. No matter how you view equality, I advocate mister Sen without reservation. This is excellent. Please buy it.

Amartya Sen really questions the very foundations that determine of what is equality and development. It is indeed a marvellous piece of work.

On today's menu of remedies for our social and economic ills, empowerment has become immensely popular. The scholarly literature abounds with it: computerized searches yield thousands of citations in myriad disciplines. The education profession seems intoxicated by it; it infuses the entire political spectrum--from Marxists to feminists, from Black Power advocates to conservatives. As Weissberg points out, all assume, typically with more hope than proof, that if only people seized control of their lives, betterment would surely ensue. Allegedly, empowerment will cure everything from personal disorders to declining city centers. Weissberg conducts an FDA-like inquiry across numerous academic disciplines to assess the worthiness of this cure. He balances a close reading of the underlying theoretical foundations with empirically demonstrated effectiveness. Entire chapters are devoted to empowerment as a cure for personal problems ranging from health to homelessness, education, community development, and the problems afflicting African Americans. Despite all the promises, however, evidence of accomplishment is not forthcoming. Indeed, as Weissberg demonstrates, much of the evidence is twisted to disguise failure. Worse, much of this helpfulness is merely admonitions for greater dependency and misdirection away from cures of proven utility. Given that almost all this advice emanates from academics, the discrepancy between promise and result raises some troubling issues about today's academy. Clearly, professors do not suffer from ill-conceived remediation though their careers may flourish from publications about uplifting. Bound to be controversial, The Politics of Empowerment is a tonic for social scientists, policy makers, and citizens concerned with America's myriad sociopolitical problems.

Forecasting future from a new perspective.......2006-03-01
When Egypt's president revealed a drive for improving democracy a year ago, the deputy head of the country's top appeals court felt hope, but today, are Egypt's democratic reforms complete? Recently Pakistan has banned anti-cartoon rallies in Lahore after several demonstrations turned deadly, but can the same protests be totally controlled in other parts of the Islamic world? When thousands of demonstrators marched through Paris to protest racism after the killing of a Paris Jew, do you really think it just an incident? These are just some headlines from today's AP news. Coping with cultural diversity is one of the central challenges of the 21st century. Nowadays, while most people are concerned about the future of technological new frontiers such as artificial intelligence, nanotechnology and gene technology, I am more curious about the status quo of our human societies, cultures and its implications for forecasting the future. This can be best explained why I chose to read the book, Human Development Report 2004.
This book is about discussing human development from a global perspective. As this book alerts us, "a global clash of cultures" is now happening. Like all UNDP's Human Development Reports, this book is actually an independent study intended to encourage discussion about human rights, cultural diversity, globalization, cultural liberty, etc. From my point of view, those are basic issues and at least continue to be "hot" and even getting hotter in the rest of this century. In other words, when people forecast new trends and changes of technologies, it is unfair to assume that the human society will simultaneously develop as technologies do. The fact is just the opposite: people always overlook or neglect those issues when they are preoccupied by fascinating technologies. In addition, technologies degenerate human development by making masses of people lazy and indulging people with convenience and effortless lives.
One of the book's strengths is that it takes you through cultural issues around the world by which the authors make a case for respecting diversity and building more inclusive societies by adopting policies that explicitly recognize cultural differences-multicultural policies. Another powerful section was on building of multicultural democracies.
Among many issues mentioned in this book, cultural liberty is the one that fascinated me. According to the authors, cultural liberty is a vital part of human development because being able to choose one's identity-who one is-without losing the respect of others or being excluded from other choices is important in leading a full life. Because minority identity was my former research area eight years ago when I pursued my first MA in cultural anthropology, I can well understand today's conflicts from a perspective of cultural identity. In the future, war will involved more identity disputes, especially when you realize that most countries of our world share the same cultural diversity. For example, Malaysia, consists of 62% of its people Malays and other indigenous groups, 30% ethnic Chinese and 8% Indian. China has 56 nationalities and, even in a metropolitan city such as Shanghai, there are 34 nationalities recorded, not to mention the other minority autonomies in the remote regions of the country.
In sum, this book opens a door for us to better understand the future of the human society, and especially for those who are willing to forecast the future but without any background of human development.-by Chunfeng

Mental disability has come of age as a subject of concern under the European Convention on Human Rights. It was only in 1979 that the first significant decision of the ECHR was decided on the subject, and after that, cases were relatively few for many years. It is only recently that this has begun to change. This volume provides an account of where the law currently stands and speculation as to how it may develop. The initial chapters deal with substantive aspects of Convention rights (including issues of detention in institutions, conditions within institutions, medical treatment, problems associated with guardianship and others). The final two chapters move to discuss the practicalities of litigation. The book concludes with a number of appendices (primarily the primary international legal materials of relevance to mental disability rights under the ECHR, and the relevant recommendations and principles from the Council of Europe). It is hoped that this volume, in addition to shedding light on where the law currently stands, will offer practical guidance to lawyers concerning the mechanics of representing people with mental disabilities.

Even if you're not an activist and don't want to be, as long as you have any sort of interest in social change, this book will be well worth reading. Packed with examples of how movements have succeeded and failed, this extremely readable handbook will inspire through its analysis of strategies and tactics that can be used to accomplish what many of us desperately want. Most of us understand already that simply arguing for social justice will fail to achieve it, but -- as Shaw demonstrates -- Herculean efforts, if miscalculated, will just as surely fail. In this book, Shaw describes successful strategies for community organizers, effective relationships with elected officials, the use of coalitions, ballot initiatives, the media, lawyers, and direct action strategies. The most persuasive theme tying each of these discussions together is that the best defense is an effective offense, that a failure to aggressively pursue positive change is a strategy for worsening the status quo.
GREAT ideas and examples for Activists.......2001-08-17
This book is highly readable and has GREAT examples and tips. The author shows examples where organizations succeeded and where they failed. As a novice activist, I found it to be very helpful. The examples are diverse so I think there is a great deal for more experienced activits to learn as well. The only drawback of this book is that it focuses only on domestic issues. For those whose causes are on the international level as well as the domestic level would find that to be the only draw back. Still, this is a useful book with great examples and ideas that any activist could use and relate to their own campaign.

Thorough Review of Literature.......2001-02-08
This book is very abundant in resarch and exploration of the link between animal abuse and intimate violence. Addtionally, they focus on children and pet-care programs in the latter part of the book. This portion is signifcant since these programs assist in preventing further domestic violence and animal abuse. Frank Ascione and Phil Arkow produced a very good book, and this book should be read by all within the domestic violence field, vetererians, and law enforcement officials.
