Commitment, Character, Competence.......2007-07-31
The advice in this book extends beyond the professional world and echoes in everyday life. This makes sense; we don't live double-lives, and there exists no magic, secret formula for success in business, medicine, or raising kids. It comes down to basic human virtues.
Commitment. Character. Competence. These attributes fuel the engines of success in life.
It boggles the mind how many books or programs offer axiomatic platitudes such as "it's not what you know but who you know" or "success is what makes you happy, so be true to yourself."
None such wasteful advice finds its way into this book. Rather, Dr. Irwin points out the objective, observable standards that exist in life, and our need to continually evaluate ourselves and measure our choices against those standards.
As the book says; it's simple, but it isn't easy. I highly recommend this book.
Run with the Bulls Without Getting Trampled.......2007-07-08
Tim Irwin's book, "Run with the Bulls," is by far the most insightful business book I have read this year. It causes you to take a look beneath the surface and determine how you can lead a life of significance and find meaning in your work. There are very few business books that take you to this level of personal reflection. "Run with the Bulls" is one of them.
run with the bulls.......2007-04-19
"Run with the Bulls" offers a practical approach to finding meaning and fulfillment in our careers. Tim Irwin uses straightforward language to express complex ideas. He has an engaging way with personal anecdotes that serve both to clarify his themes and share aspects of his family life. One of the book's many pleasures is its frequent use of cultural references. Dr Irwin's interests range from "New Yorker" cartoons to TS Eliot to popular movies like "Groundhog Day." His experience as a psychologist has given him unique insight into the complex issues that so often derail our attempts to pursue excellence.
If you are running your career you need this book.......2007-03-08
The best complete compilation and illustration of the keys to a great life and career.
Great Stories with a Powerful Message.......2007-01-31
"Run with the Bulls" is hard book to put down. I savored each chapter. The author tells real life stories as the foundation for a powerful message on principles of leadership. After reading the book I passed it on to my 18 year-old son who read it in a week. I wish I had known the principles which Irwin sets forth so clearly when I began my career! The stampeding bulls will trample the energy and enthusiasm out of many young professionals. I ordered six copies for my family members to help them avoid that fate.

A call to prayer.......2006-12-27
On the very first page, the author tells us that he is angry. He has a bone to pick with other pastors. Specifically, it is with those whom he feels have abandoned their calling to be totally devoted to preaching and to prayer to do other work within the church. To this end, he sets forth what he considers to be the three main angles which are meant to support the structure of church ministry.
The fundamental angles set forth by the author are prayer, the use of the Scriptures and the development of a "spiritual direction." The first two of these are obvious in their scope. Spiritual direction is defined abstractly as that aspect of ministry that touches all of the details of life. As such, it is defined in terms of what you do when you are not doing anything that would normally be considered to be of consequence.
The strengths of this book are seen in its treatment of the themes of prayer, specifically with its references to the Psalms. He sets forth the idea from the Psalms that the Sabbath is meant for both praying and playing. Unfortunately, he seems to do this through some faulty exegesis as he uses a translation of Psalm 92:1 apart from its obvious context to support his own pet theory of "Sabbath play." Verse 3 of the same chapter makes it quite obvious that the "play" described therein is that of musical instruments being used to worship the Lord. Such poor exegesis is sad in any format; it is especially tragic in a book which holds up as one of its three primary pillars the importance of a correct use of the Scriptures. It is perhaps for this reason that, when he deals with the subject of the Scriptures, he seems to get carried away with the tools of vocalized words rather than with the message that they convey.
At the same time, there is a call to prayer of a level that we need to hear and to which we need to respond. The answer isn't to stop doing other things as much as to prioritize prayer.
Mastering the obvious as the straw man taps out. . . .......2005-07-26
In "Working the Angles" Peterson opens with the statement "American Pastors are abandoning their posts, left and right, and at an alarming rate. . . they have gone (...) after other gods. What they do with their time under the guise of pastoral ministry hasn't the remotest connection with what the church's pastors have done for most of twenty centuries" (1)
With this statement, Peterson goes on to explain the reasons behind this abandonment and the ways to rectify the situation. His thesis can be found on page 3 when he states, "Three pastoral acts are so basic, so critical, that they determine the shape of everything else. The acts are praying, reading Scripture, and giving spiritual direction. Besides being basic, these three acts are quiet. They do not call attention to themselves and so are often not attended to"(3).
The rest of the book is an explication of these three pastoral acts in three sections: Prayer, Scripture and Spiritual Direction. These three sections are full of insightful and helpful personal observations from Peterson and do an effective job of describing the type minister that anyone reading this book longs to be. In short, this book describes the ministerial style of Jesus, which is helpful when described but a little more difficult in practice.
Although the content of this book is interesting, it is written against an opponent that doesn't exist and gives answers that are painfully obvious in a way that is antagonistic and alienating. Where are these ministers who completely reject that reading the Bible, Praying and some sort of Christian Accountability (what Peterson calls Spiritual Direction) are necessary? Peterson rails against the whoring throng of ministers who have rejected these basic tenets with righteous indignation, the problem is these people don't exist. The people who do exist are those who have gotten confused and beaten down by the demands of the "job" and have lost their sense of calling and maybe don't pray enough, or read their bible enough or have any accountability. Unlike Peterson, I would not liken these people to those who have "bowed the knee to Baal"(3).
It is undeniable that there is a problem in contemporary Christianity w/ burnout among ministers (although It is false to assume that this is a contemporary phenomenon). When confronted with this objective fact, there are two answers. One is championed with "hot indignation" by Peterson and points to a causal relationship between "doing" and "being," as if these pastors had only been let in on the revelation that reading the bible, praying and friends were good things.
On the other hand, this book would have been great had it presupposed that the situation that some ministers find themselves in was not a conscious choice nor is it a result of some sort of undiagnosed narcissistic complex that drove them to ministry so that they could be seen (for the record, there are many more careers one could choose that are a little more glamorous. . just a few!). This book could have been written with the same pastoral insight and concern that it is hoping to engender in its readers.
If you're a pastor who is feeling out of control and looking for some good insights into life as a minister . . . read this book and skip the intro.
Good basic text for aspirants and pastors.......2005-01-26
Peterson's work gives a simple yet accurate image of three necessary ingredients for developing an aspirant into a pastor. He boils it down to three "angles" of prayer, Scripture, and spiritual direction connected by the "lines" of preaching, teaching and administration (5). He rejcts the "gimmicks" that might be offered to short-circuit the process, gimmicks that might polish one's exterior image yet do little to strengthen one's heart, soul, spirit, or relationship with God (7).
His discussion of the angle of prayer is good and solid theologically, yet offers little new information or inspiration. I found this section of the book to be the weakest.
His section regarding Holy Scripture was the one I found to be the best. He makes the interesting and little-expressed point that "reading Scripture is not the same as listening to God" (87). He advocates "contemplative exegesis" to uncover the living story of Scripture through sound and oral tradition rather than printed information. I agree with his insistence that pastors should refrain from distilling Scripture into so many neat packages of morality and lessons, and instead preach and teach the stories with all of their messy, graphic, and even embarassing details. One can visit a museum and see neatly arranged items and artifacts of a country, or one can travel to that country and live, work, and sweat in it, eat its food and speak its language. Again, this section is the strongest.
Regarding spiritual direction, Peterson defines it in somewhat ambiguous terms, which was frustrating to me at first. However, he rightly points out that most such direction occurs in spontaneous and "unplanned but 'just right' moments" (160). Reading this chapter makes me suspect that spiritual direction could be a challenge for those considered to have a "Type A" personality. I strongly agree with Peterson that a pastor needs a spiritual director who will keep him/her balanced and attentive to the voice of the Holy Spirit.
resonates with me.......2005-01-25
Peterson challenges his readers to avoid settling for maintaining merely an image of pastoral work. Using the metaphor of a triangle, he describes the visible lines of pastoral work as preaching, teaching and administration. But the lines of these public activities cannot give any shape to a ministry without the interior angles of prayer, Scripture reading and spiritual direction to hold them together.
Peterson declares, "I don't know of any other profession in which it is quite as easy to fake it as in ours." I'm in seminary now and I am emphatically not hoping for a ministry of "faking it." Working the Angles offers encouragement for the traditional, and traditionally quiet, disciplines of the interior angles. This is a book that I expect will resonate after five, ten and twenty years of pastoral experience.
Book Description
Work and Integrity is a timely resource that examines the crisis as well as the promise of professionalism in contemporary society. This vital book argues for the importance of a new civic professionalism that reflects the ideals of democracy and public service in our ever more complex economic environment. A publication of The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, Work and Integrity explores the most current thinking on the various (and often conflicting) ways in which the concept of professional work is understood. Using examples from the United States and Europe, the author describes how the professions evolved from a limited kind of genteel occupation into one of the most widely emulated and sought-after models of work. The book also explores the rise of complex institutions of industrial and postindustrial society, especially the university and the bureaucratic structures of business, government, health care, and education.

Sound advice and a beautifully designed book.......2006-07-09
John Selby will be on our radio show in July. During the our interviews together I found that this book is only a small amount to his wisdom. I read many books every week. I found the organization of the book to be easy to read, easy to understand, which also allows you to follow the information in making changes that you want to do in your life. The information he exchanges is from experience and practical. It does work. You need to get this book. It is a must read. If you are in the personal development feed it is definitely a book that will help you make profound changes in others. And then it is a bigger MUST have.
Self-improvement ideas that deliver.......2006-05-16
I read this book, since I seek tools for self-improvement. "Control your mind, and you control your reality."
I first surveyed numerous other candidates, which I found complex and convoluted.
This book provides a straight-forward, non-secular approach from which any reader can quickly gain the benefits of a peaceful, focused mind. The authors demonstrate that you can achieve this mind-state, anywhere, and anytime. I find these tools very useful.
You will enjoy reading the book, but moreover, you will carry its learned tools forward: control your mind, and you control your reality...it works!

Both practical and theoretical........2006-03-20
Lovett Weems of Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC, provides for pastors and other church leaders many valuable thoughts on one of his life passions-leadership within the local congregation. This reader has found "Church Leadership" to be an excellent resource; it is both broad and theoretical while paying close attention to practical details; it encourages the pastor to grow personally while paying close attention to the cultural realities of the faith community; it summarizes the work of many others in the field, even while it presents these ideas in a relevant, unique way.
The purpose of "Church Leadership" is "...that pastors and other church leaders will come to see that effective leadership is not only compatible with the faithful ministry, it is also essential to the fulfillment of the calling of God to which we have responded." (35). To that end, he begins by examining the concept of leadership. Like beauty and art, leadership cannot be sufficiently described nor can it be reduced to a mathematical formula, but one knows it when he sees it. We can observe various traits that seem to accompany leadership (it is often spiritual, chaotic, funny, etc.) but these things are not leadership itself. Rather than attempt to define and formulate leadership, Weems presents what leadership is not: it should not be confused with style, nor management, nor administration. Nevertheless even while the definition of leadership is difficult to grasp, Weems believes that four elements are essential for a church leader to develop: Vision, Team, Culture, and Integrity.
The main section of the book treats these four vital areas of effective pastoral leadership: the proper creation and maintenance of a mission/Vision; Team-building; the analysis of and leadership role in Culture; and the concept of personal (and group) Integrity. As mentioned above, each section is not only hands-on and practical, but it also presents the theories behind these areas. The prose is highly readable and filled with useful quotes and examples.
In all, while at times this reader felt overwhelmed by all the information and numerous "things to keep in mind" as I serve in my leadership role, the book is also highly optimistic. The end result is that I feel challenged, find myself holding a greater respect for the leadership role in a church, and better prepared to lead a congregation as a result of this book. Highly recommended for all those in church leadership positions.

Best Men's Devotional.......2007-07-23
I acquired my first copy of this book at a used book store. Since then I have purchased dozens to give to friends and associates. It is simply the best men's devotional I have found. It is often the highlight of my personal devotions. One reason the book is so good is that the author has skillfully selected from some of the best Christian authors - classic and current. The range of contributors, subjects and perspectives is impressive. Mr. Harrison seems to have a natural instinct for selecting gems of thought that hit home and challenge men to take and live their faith seriously and productively!
What A Way To Start The Day...............2000-03-06
I picked this book up on a whim...a last minute purchase, without even looking inside at most of the content...I've had it for more than two years now, and I've made it a daily practice to read the chapter for the day before leaving my house to go to work...This collection of Bible lessons and day to day experiences from so many different authors has brought a great deal of peace into my hectic life...I would highly recommend this book to any man, single or married, with or without children...my favorite passage has got to be the one from Max Lucado..."Choose This Day"...GO BUY THIS BOOK!
Great insight into a variety of a man's life decisions.......1999-10-28
This book culminates many different sources into one, practical, and intelligent synopsis for men. This book is good for men ages 15 and older seeking to either form, renew, or solidify their values based upon those in the Christian faith. However, this book also provides great moral guidance without being too "preachy". It is very reader-friendly and can take four minutes to read a daily devotion that will leave you reflecting upon its merit for hours. In addition to the devotional passages, there are carefully chosen passages of the Bible that relate to the contemporary topic at hand. Without a doubt, this is a book that I will give to both my father and son - and that I will continue to re-read for years to come.

A leadership manual that emphasizes integrity.......2007-04-30
Robert L. Turknett and Carolyn N. Turknett wrote this book before the corporate scandals of Enron, Tyco and WorldCom, so their emphasis on integrity as a crucial component of leadership is prescient. They believe in emotional and life balance rather than ambition, and cooperation rather than competition. Every chapter is full of examples of people who have taken leadership roles based on these values, showing that it is, in fact, possible. We recommend this book to leaders and aspiring leaders - whether of organizations, companies, departments, or even social or family groups - who wish to find out how they, as individuals, can lead with integrity. Leaders who truly believe in what they are doing and the people they are leading will embrace the challenge of further developing themselves using this leadership character model.
From Citizen Rebellion in the Holocaust to Corporate HR: Decency Rules the Day.......2005-08-28
Here's a book that approaches integrity in business not from the marketing side, but from management and human resources. And one that will almost surely build your personal communication skills, and thus the effectiveness of yourself, your reports, your supervisor, and your company.
I recommend reading Andra Media's "Conflict Unraveled" first, as it provides a nice framework to better understand and appreciate the information in this newer work.
It takes a while to get into the somewhat stiff writing style, but it's worth the effort. Focused as it is on character principles as management tools, it's an excellent counterpart to my book, Principled Profit: Marketing that Puts People First, and a strong reminder that the success and empowerment of our own employees not only our responsibility as ethical leaders, but also crucial to our own success. And yet, DPDC is also willing to step well outside the business world for the perfect example: such as the quiet heroism of Miep Gies, the Dutch secretary who sheltered Anne Frank and her family, and who saved Anne's diary after the Nazis raided the hidden dwelling.
Some of the specific goodies I found:
* Change agents within an organization are most successful when they start by publicly acknowledging what people are doing right--to catch and report their success just as so many of us are quick to catch and announce what's wrong.
* People rise to our expectations; if we express the attitude that they are fully capable of the task they've taken on, they will succeed.
* Integrity is a balance of the twin principles of respect and responsibility, which the Turknetts see as the fundamental elements, the Yin and Yang, of human interaction. Under the category of respect, the authors group empathy, emotional mastery, lack of blame, and humility (each with its own chapter); the responsibility attributes include accountability, courage, self-confidence and integrity or wholeness.
* Managers can learn a great deal by implementing "skip-level reports," where an employee communicates directly with the supervisor's supervisor.
* It's vital to understand the difference between inquiry--probing to learn what others think, what approaches they might use--and advocacy for your own position.
* Blame is "a poisonous response" and isn't ever productive.
* Keep your promises!
* Perhaps most important, it's never too late to implement changes in the relationships at a company.
On that last point, the book is filled with stories of executives and managers who were perceived as arrogant, not listening, needing to be protected from hurtful (but necessary) information, and driving forward their own agenda without meaningful input from others. Yet, in every case cited, once the manager became aware of the problem and took responsibility for it, change occurred very rapidly--usually within even a week or two. Once direct reports started feeling that they were being heard and their advice was sought and implemented, major barriers crumbled quickly.
In the last section, the authors note that sometimes doing the right thing is not obvious. We all know not to steal, but when forced between betraying a confidential information or allowing a friend to make a disastrous decision, the choice is not easy. Yet, the authors cite a study of CEOs by the Southern Institute for Business and Professional Ethics; 99 percent felt that high ethical standards strengthen a company's competitive position. To conclude, the Turknetts offer six tools to build personal integrity, and five to strengthen the integrity of a company.

A THOUGHTFUL WORK WITH REAL-LIFE EXAMPLES........2005-02-23
Presents a Leadership Character Model; its foundation is integrity which is a balance of responsibility (core qualities: empathy, emotional mastery, lack of blame, humility) and respect (core qualities: accountability, courage, self-confidence, focus on the whole). Each of these eight qualities are explored in depth. The authors show how people and organizations (which are not separable) can develop these qualities. The Model is intended to help people learn how to lead by understanding these qualities of leadership. Each chapter ends with four key concepts. An accessible, thoughtful book, reinforced with many interesting and informative real-life examples.
A Great Book with an Inspiring yet Practical Message .......2005-01-22
In "Decent People Decent Company" the authors have put forth a model which offers pragmatic insight in cultivating an enlightened culture of true leadership at all levels while stirring individuals to seek to continuously improve their ability to help and contribute in a positive way. I believe it is of particular value in its application to organizations which support knowledge/information/technology based companies where hierarchical management is almost always counter productive to successful accomplishment of over arching business goals.
The best part of this book to me was the realization that the tools, ideas and philosophies expounded upon were just as valuable in application to personal life and relationships as they are to the business world. This is a great book and will stand the test of time as a fundamental resource in its field.

Your Character becomes Your Destiny.......2007-02-02
"There's no way around it. We've got a growing trust problem on our own soil. And it's destined to make us less competitive in global markets; spend too much money on contracts, disputes and litigation; and burden us with inefficiencies. That is, unless we can turn it around. To do so, we need leaders to take the first step." ~ pg. 55
Integrity Works presents the stories of Hank Greenberg, Mary Kay Ash, Mohandas Gandhi, John Wooden, Vonetta Flowers, Mother Teresa, Warren Buffett and Sir Thomas More. The detailed profiles paint pictures of success and uncover the secrets of a life of influence.
The main points are illustrated almost entirely by these life stories and the astonishing beauty of Mother Teresa's compassion comes through in her story like I haven't heard it told before. The idea of this book is to show how decisions developed the character of the individuals presented and how their character became their destiny.

A great ROI.......2005-04-27
Integrity works. It also inspires. Kudos to Gostick and Telford for producing a book that is as much about life and how to live it, as it is about business and how to profit from it. Integrity Works is an uplifting, powerful handbook that has changed the way I look at ROI - my own Return On Integrity.
At a time when the term "business leadership integrity" seems like an oxymoron, Integrity Works demonstrates how integrity is central to true success. This isn't a heavy book about philosophy or business principles. Rather, Gostick and Telford have distilled 10 keys to the fulfillment of integrity - illustrating the practical application of those keys through the lives of such remarkable and diverse people as Mother Teresa, Warren Buffet, and Hank Greenberg.
Integrity Works is a practical, read-able book that will make you stronger - and your business leadership qualities better. It'll also improve your ROI.
