Book Description
Richard Daft's best-selling text, Organization Theory and Design, integrates the most recent thinking about organizations, classic ideas and theories, and real world practice, in a way that is interesting and enjoyable for learners. This edition includes many updates including a new chapter on international issues and revisions of other chapters to include the most recent ideas and events. While organization studies and real world examples are insightful for understanding organizations and solve real-world problems, Daft also integrates numerous features that give learners the opportunity to apply concepts and develop skills and insights.

Excellent book with excellen deal.......2007-09-27
I bought this book with the apprehension that it might not be the same one I'm looking for.But Amazon made me feel so satisfied.I got the exact book and that too new and in much lower price than the market.
The learning book.......2005-07-23
"Organization Theory and Design" is a book every corporate member that has aspirations to better understand and contribute to his organization should own.
I used this book studying a basic course of organizational behavior after the professor had referred to it as "the best text on the market". I found out he was right - the book is extremely well-written and its contribution to my understanding of the subject is invaluable.
As it happened, I partly read older versions of the book to find out how every few years Mr. Daft updates his analysis, insights and examples of the ever changing and evolving world of organizations; for instance, the past example of IBM that served as the major opening example of an organization that has gone from the top of the world to the brink of disintegration in the beginning of the 90's (and since then regained leading position in its areas of expertise), is replaced in this 8th edition with Xerox. Mr. Daft continues and presents the most recent developments in organizations' design - structures and management methods that have only emerged lately in response to the turbulences in the environments and competition worldwide.
By making the changes and improvements in every edition "Organization theory and design" wins the title of this review - "the learning book" - that mirror images the main theme of this work - "the learning organization". Almost no organization can stand still in today's reality - managers and workers have to constantly think of better ways of doing things and learn from every source that bears knowledge and can give the organization a better competitive advantage. Things have never moved so fast and threats and opportunities have never been so immense. Competitors have to be efficient and different to survive and stay on the top.
The structure of the book is designed to convey its ideas in the best possible manner: Each and every chapter opens with an example illustrating its content, then an introduction to the subject. Theory and examples from today's organizational world followa and are interwoven throughout the text in the "in practice" section. A fascinating section is "leading by design" in which Mr. Daft highlights top-of-the-line companies that have managed to materialize the theory and consequently lead their industries. Yet another remarkable feature is "bookmark" in which the autohor recommends and actually reviews the content of other books that further develop the subject the chapter dealt with. For me, the magnitude of this behavior is unprecedented; I haven't read a book that is so much interested in advancing and advertising works of fellow authors. This is a code of conduct every author can learn from in pursuing the ultimate goal - to better inform and educate his/her readers.
Some of the material the book covers include the organizational environment, organizational structures, organizational decision making processes, ethics, organization-decline and organizational politics.
As is the norm in many books, Mr. Daft integrates case studies directly connected to the content of each chapter in its end. They add all the more to the reality dimension that is so strong throughout the book.
Lastly, the price of this book is somewhat expensive but well worth the money and will certainly prove to be a wise investment. Years after its reaing and studying it may serve as a reference source when the reader will stumble across situations covered in the book and learn to appreciate even more the lessons insights Mr. daft offers.
A Strong Guide in Organization Theory.......2001-05-18
This is a well-designed and comprehensive book in the area of organization theory. From introduction to the end, this book aims to teach the foundations of organization theory to readers.
There is a great awareness of new developments in the area of organization theory. The new developments such as team-based management models are integrated into the conventional wisdom wonderfully in the book. We are living in a world in which globalization and stiff competition dominates. We name this age as Information Age and corporations need new mentality and practices to adapt to challenging conditions this era brings about. This book presents some new approaches in global competition perspective to readers.
A Look Inside, Bookmark, In Practice, The New Paradigm and Case for Analysis are excellent peculiarities of the book.
Diagrams and other visual characterizations involved in the book give readers a big opportunity to digest topics recounted. Since this book is a detailed investigation of organization theory, you may miss some parts and feel confused. I can recommend another book, that is, Designing Organizations (Robey, D. and Sales, Carol A.), which is a summarized organization theory book with excellent cases.
If you want to understand organization theory with its basic foundations and details, this book is a must. You must exploit the rich knowledge of Professor Daft.
Strongly recommended.
Readable and great information.......2000-11-20
Daft out did himself in this edition of his text. He includes book reviews and company profiles throughout each chapter to illustrate the theories he's describing. I read this for an MA course and found it easy to learn from. I'm even putting the information into practice at work! Not all textbooks are that helpful. *grin*
team-based structure.......1999-06-28
Application of organization design about Team-Based Structures and The boundaryless Organization.
Book Description
This book provides the most current, thorough, and contemporary account of the factors affecting the organizational design process, making important organization theories accessible and interesting. It addresses the many issues and problems that are involved in managing the process of organizational change and transformation, providing direct and clear managerial implications.
Topics covered in this comprehensive book are the organization and its environment; organizational design; organizational change; and finally, interesting case studies that illustrate the concepts presented.

Good book with good examples.......2007-04-24
Before I read this book I took more of a waterfall approach to my design projects. My clients weren't really involved much after the discovery meeting, proposal, and payment date requirements. Pay half now, pay half when we're done. That was the model we used. This book has taught me to take a more iterative approach, which really gets the clients involved. Our team can more effectively manage change and adjust our projects to meet the ever evolving needs of today's web clients.
The authors did a great job presenting "not so fun" information in a very digestable manner. They did so without being foolish "dummies". They also responded to a few of my email queries on subjects that I didn't immediately comprehend. Nice work guys.
Great Book.... But minor editorial issue!.......2007-02-10
This book is a great book about project management for the web. It is insightful and provides very useful information. I especially liked Chapter 5 - Managing Change - and how the authors addressed common problems by providing a bulleted list of the symptoms and solutions to each type of problem. The authors' use of bulleted lists throughout the book work well and assist the reader with identifying key issues and/or things to think about. They also make it easy for the reader to quickly refer back to things and skim.
However, with that said, there is a minor editoral issue with this book. Everytime a bulleted list is presented the text leading into the list ends in a period (.) rather than a colon (:).
To illustrate:
- on pg 66, "Here are some tips for conducting a needs assessment." And the bulleted list follows.
- on pg 186, "...and they will be testing for bugs or defects in some or all of the following areas." And the bulleted list follows.
- on pg 268, "Here are some examples of successful Open Source products that are in widespread commercial use." And the bulleted list follows.
Having served as an Editor for several professional academic journals, this drove me absolutely mad every time I saw it. If the authors/editors of this book are going to be wrong, at least they are consistently wrong 100% of the time... which I believe is actually less maddenning then if they had gotten it right only some of the time.
If you can get past this minor editorial glitch that appears rather frequently, then definitely buy the book!
Great reference guide for any web development PM........2006-12-13
Anyone working in Interactive Marketing, whether as a Project manager or Account Manager, should keep a copy of this book on their desk for everyday reference.
The authors provide a great information source for web projects, with chapters covering everything from the basic definition of the PM role within an interactive/web development project, to a detailed list of responsibilities for every team member. The chapters on team roles and Communication Cues are a must-read even for seasoned PMI certified PMs.
The rest of the chapters follow the standard PM process (Project definition, planning, managing the various stages of the project, QA etc), putting everything within the web development perspective. The real life case studies are a great learning tool, and anyone who has worked as a PM on a web/interactive project will undoubtedly must have already faced similar challenges.
Extensive chapters on Technical Build and QA are written without inundating the reader with tech acronyms and confusing jargon. On top of that, the book includes an appendix which addresses specific projects such as brochure ware, B2B portals, e-commerce web sites, intranets and e-marketing projects. Even better, a second appendix offers a great overview of what you really need to know regarding technology as it applies to the needs of a web development project manager.
Whether you are new to Project Management or a seasoned PM, this book is a must read and great reference for the next time you will find yourself managing a web project and a number of cross functional team members who all seem to have a different vision or agenda.
If nothing else, get this book for the CD. The content includes such useful sample forms like the creative brief, an issues log database, need assessment sample forms, and an excellent template for the dreaded technical specifications form among others. In fact, the CD content, along with the real life case studies, makes this a worthwhile purchase.
Very Helpful.......2005-08-02
I'm working with a design studio that is now offering web services to its clients. This book has been very helpful, giving us a look at web projects and procedures.
It is skewed to larger projects than we will likely be involved in.
The best parts of the book are the descriptions of real projects and real problems.
Humor helps the message get through: that these kinds of projects frequently change, new problems crop up, people don't always react the way you'd expect and that it's all part of the job.
This book changed my life..........2005-02-23
It is true.
I was wondering: Why, given clints and good "implementors"-developers and designers (we are a small team), things go ugly every time?
This book gave me the answer - Poor management!
P.S This is my first book review ever.

Really Good Book...But Dated........2007-03-09
This book has a lot of great information in it. Alot of the information is timeless. However, this book is from 1992 and all the restaurant case studies are from then as well. As I read the book and they discuss restaurants like Mesa Grill and they speak of it as being new, when I know it has been around for 15 or so years, it just seems off. Also the stats such as average checks and other sales data is kind of dated. You could definitley learn from the case studies but it would be nice if they would update the book.
pretty good- but dated.......2005-07-22
Need a book like this but more up to date. Very informative though.
Excellent resource for anyone in or interested in "the biz".......2004-06-30
I own a pretty sucessful bar in Santa Barbara California and decided (about a year ago) to try my hand in the Restaurant Business.
Before I could turn back, the lease was signed, money was coming in...there was no escape. I was pretty terrified.
I decided to learn everything I could about design, management, success' and failures. The principal way I did this was to order an armada of books about the business. In all I think I bought roughly 20 books. Most of them were somewhat helpful, but none of them approached the value of this fine book.
Chronicling almost 3 dozen successful cases from such diverse business' as China Grill and Farallon, every aspect of the business is covered - design, capitalization, management organization, revenue and profit - FANTASTIC.
I can't recommend this book any higher. It was an enormous help to me in putting my new restaurant together.

Excellent and Insightful.......2002-02-06
If you are seeking concrete information into the whys and wherefores of creating and building upon a solid restaurant concept, this is the book for you. It is overflowing with detailed descriptions, practical advice, layouts, menus, square footage, operation costs... much more than I anticipated. Although at first glance it seems to be another glossy "picture" book with a high design value (which is greatly appreciated), it is in fact a true workbook and manual. The numbers are all here, allowing the reader to compare and contrast. If you are working on a business plan, this is ideal, because it is a great aid for making realistic projections. Restaurants That Work is extremely thorough and well worth the price. I am very pleased and my only gripe is that I didn't purchase this sooner!
The Best.......2001-08-14
This is without a doubt the best book I have found on restaurant design. From concept to completion and everything in between, this a truly indsepensible book for reference. Every prospective restauranteuer and restaurant designer/architect should have a copy and USE it. Martin E. Dorf asks all the right questions and explains possible solutions to prevent common restaurant design mistakes.
Book Description
Successful business alliances today are critical to the competitive advantage of many companies. Mastering Alliance Strategy presents state-of-the-art thinking and practices for using partnerships effectively. This essential resource will help you understand and use alliances better, whether you are a new or seasoned alliance professional, a business-development specialist, a line manager, or a top executive. The authors argue that the secrets to success lie not solely in the intricacies of a deal but also in the strategy and organization behind the deal. They draw ideas and tools from years of research and reporting on four elements that are key to an effective alliance strategy:
- Designing the alliance and crafting the agreement
- Managing the alliance after it is launched
- Leveraging a constellation of alliances
- Building an internal alliance capability
Customer Reviews:
Inject Risk into Business Relations for Higher Return.......2003-12-01
James D. Bamford, Benjamin Gomes-Casseres and Michael J. Robinson have put together an interesting collection of essays about the life cycle of alliances and the people in charge of these alliances. Rightly, the authors emphasize alliance strategy rather than strategic alliance. The essays are grouped around four themes: designing alliances, managing alliances, competing in constellations and building an alliance capability. Practitioners can reflect on their own alliances to see what they eventually can do better to further improve their performance in each of the four areas. The authors close their treatise by looking at some master builders. The authors correctly point out that there is no one solution for all. What works in one company can fail in another. Corporate culture plays a key role in making difficult to successfully borrow alliance best practices from other companies for another organization usage. As a side note, "Building, Leading and Managing Strategic Alliances" by Fred A. Kuglin is a good complement to the topics covered in "Mastering Alliance Strategy."

Problem with the Paperback Edition of this book.......2007-10-08
The author of this book has some valuable insights about using case studies and provides great examples. The problem if there is any, is that this book in it's paperback form is supposed to have a CD-ROM attached to it. However, it isn't. So either you have to contact the publisher yourself to get a CD sent to you, or if you're like me you return the copy to Amazon and request a replacement. But guess what? They send you another copy without the CD. Not very nice. When I called the publisher their service representative didn't even know that the book comes in paperback. It's just a messy situation all around. So if you're lucky to get a copy with the CD attached you'll have a valuable resource to use. If not, it's up to you whether the high price you're paying without getting a CD is worth it. Just maybe if enough people don't order the book the publisher might get the message and start including the CD. So buyer beware and buy the paperback edition at your own risk!!!

Book Description
A thorough analysis of public policy and the Clean Water Act's effect on water quality in the U.S.
Using water quality data and historical records from the past 60 years, this book presents the measured impact of the 1972 Clean Water Act on domestic waterways-ecologically, politically, and economically. Municipal Wastewater Treatment supports the hypothesis that the Act's regulation of wastewater treatment processes at publicly owned treatment works (POTW) and industrial facilities has achieved significant success. The authors' case is presented in:
- Background information on the history of water pollution control and water quality management
- Chapters addressing long-term trends in biochemical oxygen demand loadings from municipal wastewater plants and the "worst-case" dissolved oxygen levels in waterways downstream of point sources before and after the Clean Water Act
- Nine case study assessments of long-term trends of pollutant loading water quality and environmental resources associated with POTW discharges
Using long-term trends in dissolved oxygen as the key indicator of water quality improvements, this book provides a detailed retrospective analysis of the effectiveness of the water pollution control policies and regulations of the 1972 Clean Water Act. The successes of the Act that have been achieved over the past 30 years are placed in the historical context of the "Great Sanitary Awakening" of the 19th century and changes in public policies for water supply and water pollution control that have evolved during the 20th century to protect public health and the intrinsic value of aquatic resources. Case study sites include the Connecticut River, Hudson-Raritan Estuary, Delaware Estuary, Potomac Estuary, Upper Chattahoochee River, Ohio River, Upper Mississippi River, and Willamette River.
Complete with end-of-chapter summaries and conclusions, Municipal Wastewater Treatment: Evaluating Improvements in National Water Quality is an essential book for engineers, scientists, regulators, and consultants involved in water quality management and wastewater treatment, as well as students of environmental engineering, environmental science, and public policy.

Paul and Sarah Edwards have kept abreast of changing directions in small business through a series of eight bestselling books that began with their pioneering Working from Home, first published in 1985. Now, teaming up with computer industry journalist Linda Rohrbough, they've set their sights on the Internet and how to profitably incorporate it into an entrepreneurial operation. The book delivers on exactly what the title offers, Making Money in Cyberspace: The Inside Information You Need to Start or Take Your Own Business On-Line, and aims to flatten the learning curve for novice but interested small businesses. The nuts and bolts of working both within the medium (designing Web sites and providing associated services to others, for instance) and with it (selling various unrelated goods and services online) are thoroughly discussed from the small-business perspective, as are technical matters (such as choosing an entrepreneur-friendly ISP and setting up a credit-card account). Periodic profiles of those who successfully use cyberspace in their business--complete with relevant URLs--are also interesting and instructive. --Howard Rothman

Filled with hot air.......2002-06-24
I thought this book would actually talk about ways you can make money in cyberspace. What a let down. It seems all the book talks about is how great the internet is and its advantages. I already knew the benefits of the internet before I read this book. Stay away from this one.
Stands the test of (Internet) time.......2001-08-11
When this book came across the desk, we thought "oh gosh, another out of date, get rich quick, internet how-to primer". Wrong, wrong, wrong.
Paul and Sarah Edwards seem to have a keyboard that turns whatever is typed into gold. The duo are noted for creating inspiring, hands-on, how-to books for the small time operator with big dreams, and this one is no different. In cyberspace, where one offline line year is the equivalent of ten online years, it is very difficult to write a book about the Internet that is not completely out of date by 3 p.m. the next day. This book though is one the few that can stand the test of time (or at least still be relevant next week).
The Edwards do the usual explaining, defining and exampling, but we were most impressed with their profiles. We visited several websites that were mentioned in the book and found all of them to still be in business! In the lightning fast "up and at `em" today "down and out" tomorrow atmosphere of the Internet this was truly a surprise. It just goes to show-if those entrepreneurs read this book and are still profiting, than maybe you will too.
Chock full of inspiring real life success stories, you'd do well to give this read your full attention.

Excellent cyberspace primer to making money on-line........2001-06-18
Don't let the title fool you... this book is not about the quick, get rich internet scams that proliferate around the web. This book is for the lay person who has a bricks and mortar business or who wants to start from scratch. The internet is not going away and it is possible, with hard work and this book as a guide, to make money using the internet as a tool. Buy this book and get out your highlighter... you'll find a great deal of information that you can put to use starting today!
Anyone Can Derive An Income From It!.......2000-08-02
Work-at-home experts Paul and Sarah Edwards, the authoring team of a series of leading working-from-home books, have teamed up with Linda Rohrbough to write Making Money In Cyberspace to encourage business people to take their existing businesses online and to invite others to test the waters of starting an online business from scratch themselves. This book will open up the exciting world of online business opportunities.
Making Money In Cyberspace was written to demonstrate that a number of traditional occupations including domestic, technical, and corporate level work can be conducted online from the comfort of a home or office. The authors cite a number of occupations that just about anyone can make a living from online. Check out the helpful checklist at the back of the book!
The book focuses a considerable amount of attention to the details of designing creative Websites that will effectively market an online business operation. Building and promoting effective Websites, developing content, advertising options, payment considerations, and selecting an Internet service provider are covered. A number of actual cases studies are provided to reinforce these important issues.
Readers will appreciate the fact that the authors have expressed themselves in a non-technical manner. Anyone can pick up this book and put it to use! It will make a great companion to other books written by these authors. This is sure to be a favorite among those who love what the Internet has to offer and desire to derive an income from it! This book would also make a nice gift!
A must read for all netrepreneurs and web designers.......1999-11-04
This book is great. Though the main focus is to show how people have become successful online, there's no hype about making billions overnite. Examples range from people who have made a few thousand dollars a year online, to people have made millions. The book reviews how some business ideas didn't work on the web at first, how how they had to change and adjust to get better results. Gets into some technical aspects too. Also a must read for web designers.
Book Description
This guide to creating a dynamic GIS data model helps database managers design a schema that has comprehensive and descriptive query definitions, a user-friendly cartographic display, and increased performance standards. The five steps for taking a data model through its conceptual, logical, and physical phases, including modeling the user’s view, defining objects and relationships, selecting geographic representations, matching geodatabase elements, and organizing the geodatabase structure are studied in detail. A look at nine decision points that deal with concerns common to all data modeling exercises, such as validating feature geometries, modeling linear networks, managing raster data, and labeling map features help database managers fine-tune their GIS data models. Several design models for a variety of applications are considered including addresses and locations, census units and boundaries, stream and river networks, and topography and the base map.
Customer Reviews:
Buen libro, buena compra.......2007-05-17
Design ideas and scenarios.......2006-10-02
This book provides a good introduction of steps and principles in designing geodatabases and the importance of information products and identifying thematic layers. The book presents 7 complex models: streams and river networks, census units and boundaries, addresses and locations, parcels and cadastre, surveying federal lands, using raster data, cartography and the base map. For each model they present the features, feature data sets, relationships, and topology rules. Readers working in these 7 areas will probably gain most from the book.
I would have also liked simpler examples and more design principles on grouping features into feature data sets. One of the strengths of this book is in stressing the value of topology rules, and feature data sets are needed for topology rules. With a database background, I would have liked fuller exploration of database relationships and normality contrasted with GIS relationship classes, relates, and joins, since data is often "flattened" when put into GIS. Readers of this should probably start with Modeling Our World: The Esri Guide to Geodatabase design by Michael Zeiler.
mindshare is being sold here, not the book.......2006-07-05
The subject is considerably more specialised that designing a relational data base. The book is part of ESRI's ongoing way to publicise geodatabases, and hence ultimately drive demand for their products. So keep in mind that what is really being sold here is not the book but mindshare. Yours.
The text has extensive explanations as to what you might need in a geodatabase, as well as what is technically feasible to put in it. It also suggests that you consider what you want your users to be able to do. And use this in no small way to drive the design requirements. Software developers will recognise this as the gathering of scenarios from stakeholders. So you probably should canvas your potential users, if this is at all possible.
