Book Description
Moral Conflict, the subject of this book is passionate and difficult to resolve. Responses that are normally effective such as explaining, persuading, and compromising can make matters worse and drive people further apart in such conflicts. Moral conflicts occur when incommensurate social realities come to clash. Disputes about abortion, religion in politics and education, legal rights for homosexuals, and environmental politics are issues in which well-intentioned parties have created polarized and diverse patterns of communication. The most virtuous actions of each side not only fail, but widen the schism. Such conflicts require us to find forms of communication that go beyond our normal ways of dealing with disagreement. In an original synthesis of communication theory and their own research, W. Barnett Pearce and Stephen W. Littlejohn describe a dialectical tension between the expression and suppression of conflict that can be transcended in ways that lead to personal growth and productive patterns of social action. In
Moral Conflict several projects are described as practical examples of these new ways of working through difficult struggles.

Wonderful book.......1999-03-01
I am reading this book, Moral Conflict, and I recommend it very highly. Intercultural conflict in today's rapidly shrinking world is almost inevitable. The authors bring many practical models which help increase one's options in resolving conflict situations. I VERY highly recommend the book.

the source book for psychological ethics.......2006-03-26
i attended a forensic psychology ethics workshop conducted by dr. bersoff, which propelled me to reading his book that had gathered dust on my shelf this past year. the book was edited by bersoff, a former board member and legal counsel of the APA. chapter authors read like a who's who in the field. the content is well-organized. the book is quite readable. they re-print and discuss the APA ethics code, guidelines, ethical issues and laws fairly extensively. i'd love to see applied research on ethical decision making. outstanding resource
Informative, thought-provoking book.......2005-09-25
i bought this book for a graduate school class in ethics for psychologists and found it to be extremely thought-provoking and informative. the ethical guidelines are discussed in an easy-to-understand format, and numerous case examples are provided that really make you think about where you stand on various issues facing mental health practitioners. highly recommended reading--excellent for someone just starting in the field and a great refresher for those who have been practicing for awhile.
Book Description
In 1959 the German journalist Norbert Lebert conducted extensive interviews with the sons and daughters of prominent Nazis: Hess, Bormann, Göring, and Himmler; Baldur von Schirach, creator of the Hitler Youth; and Hans Frank, governor of Poland. Then at the beginning of their adult lives, Lebert's subjects were the bearers of notorious names that made them outcasts to some, symbols of a lost glory to others.
Forty years later, Lebert's son Stephan-also a journalist-tracked down these same men and women to find out what had become of them, how they remembered their fathers, and what effect the names they carried had on the paths they had taken. Lebert's account of his conversations, juxtaposed with his father's postwar interviews, gives us an extraordinary and unflinching look at how these individuals have coped with a horrifying heritage.
The stories that emerge are fascinating, surprising, and often disturbing: The young man who refuses military service and is granted conscientious objector status on the grounds that his father is imprisoned by the state--as a Nazi war criminal. The boy who begins his education learning the principles of fascism, finishes it at a Catholic boarding school, and later becomes a priest and a missionary to Africa. The woman who was systematically refused work because she wouldn't use an alias, but who now lives in the suburbs under her husband's name and keeps secret contacts with other nostalgic Nazis. The journalist who writes a scathing magazine article reviling the father responsible for two million deaths, and is greeted with a barrage of letters from outraged Germans--whatever your father may have done, the letters argue, fathers must always be honored.
My Father's Keeper is a remarkable and illuminating addition to our knowledge of the Nazi past and of how this past continues to haunt the present. And it offers a chilling perspective on the way children live with the legacy of their parents' deeds.

Fascinating but badly put together.......2007-10-19
I thought it was just me when I first read this book and found it so confusing until I had a look through the reviews of several other people to see I was not alone in this.
Perhaps the original German is better written but sadly, this does not do it justice which is a great pity as this had the potential to be a fascinating read.
The book centers around follow up interviews the author made with various children of leading men in the Nazi German government. While some have come to terms with both themselves and their fathers past others have remained bitter to this day while some even continue to support, at least in principle the theories of their father.
Of particular interest were Wolf Rudiger Hess who refused to serve in the army out of protest at his fathers imprisonment while Martin Bormann entered the church and to some extent, found a peace with himself Gurden Himmler and Niklas Frank still suffered from inner battles with themselves on how to reconcile the father with the man that the world has come to know.
Fascinating book but you will have to read it twice not least because the narrative is so damn confusing.
Inflated magazine article, but somewhat interesting.......2007-08-20
It's not a subject you run across very often- the post-war lives of the children of the Nazi hierarchy. We tend to think of the 1945 defeat or perhaps the Nuremberg trials as the "end" of the Nazi era, as if the experience of Hitler's Germany was somehow able to be quarantined into distant memory, and banned by Allied decree from any further influence on the nation or the individuals who lived through it. On the contrary, the Nazi experience was indelible and formative. That's true for most Germans of that time, but especially for the children of those men who would have been gods on earth had Germany won the war. Instead, those children were thrown back to reality with the regime's overthrow and had to endure the Old Testament-type stigma of being the offspring of history's most hated men. How do you endure when the world calls your father a monster?
This book gives some surprising answers. It includes the 1959 interviews by Norbert Lebert and the subsequent follow-ups by his son Stephan. Most of Martin Bormann's children- and he was probably the most anti-religious Nazi Minister- converted to Catholicism. His eldest even became a priest. Rudolf Hess' son idolized his father and became something of an apologist for him and the National Socialist ideology. Himmler's daughter became an unrepentant Nazi who desired to rehabilitate her father's name. Hans Frank's son spent his life consumed with hatred for his father. Goring's daughter honors her father's memory. Karl-Otto Saur's son is more philosophical, hating but trying to understand his father. Baldur von Schirach's children are proud of their father for disavowing National Socialism while in prison but are mainly uncomfortable about being in the spotlight.
It's an interesting subject, but the old double standard really struck me. Sixty years after WWII we're still obsessed with the Nazi regime, even going so far as to check up on the children of its officials to make sure they're properly penitent for their father's deeds. Why doesn't anyone track down the children of the men who incinerated the non-combatants of Dresden and a host of other German cities? How are they coping with life knowing their fathers were war criminals? Has anyone done an interview with Margaret Truman to make sure that she has disavowed the father who dropped atomic bombs on the civilians of Hiroshima and Nagasaki? How can LBJ's kids live with themselves? How can the Bush daughters still love a man whom they know has waged aggressive war on Iraq? When it comes to the crimes of the Germans, there seems to be a very one-sided standard of morality in the Anglo-Saxon/Semitic world view.
Great substance - terrible writing.......2007-06-06
I read this book in German. In the original, the substance is fascinating, but the writing was terrible, and the layout of the chapters was confusing and counter-intuitive. This book needed more extensive editing. I hope that in the translation, some of these problems were fixed. Reglardless, this is a highly interesting book and a must-read in spite of its flaws.
In the kingdom of the Blind.......2004-08-03
At the present Amazon price this book is a bargain, so despite my low star ranking, I would urge people to purchase.
The subject this book covers is so under reported that Lebert's book is compelling despite major flaws.
Like most WWII books this publication is compromised by historical orthodoxy, admittedly a particularly onerous burden for a German author.
The strictures of historical orthodoxy make Lebert a casualy unsympathetic biographer. It is impossible for Lebert to speculate as to whether Gudrun Himmlers fierce devotion to her father may have been consolidated by her treatment after the war. In Gudrun's case as in the case of the other "Nazikinder" there is a failure to regard the internment of the children and the deaths/imprisonment of their fathers as possible sources of psychological trauma which deeply influenced their adult lives and opinions.
On a broader note Lebert is not allowed to speculate that a General German insousciance, vis a vis German war criminals, may have it's origin in their own sufferings. Millions of German civilians were immolated in bombing raids, millions of Germans were expelled from their homes, and in the Soviet zone hundreds of thousands of girls and women were gang raped, perhaps their own personal trauma contributed to a tendency towards indifference among the German population to the terrible sufferings of others? Who knows? None can ask.
Although this is not a well written book, as a book, Lebert is a good writer with an easy prose style which means that My Fathers Keeper is by no means a chore to read. An interesting exploration for both the general reader and for those interested in this time period.
Sad and disturbing.......2004-06-26
This book is a must read for those interested in the Nazi leaders. I found some of these children's views most disturbing, especially the refusal to face the truth of what their fathers did (with a few exceptions). What is amazing is the pity party some have telling of the awful prison/camps they were submitted to after the war. Their post war treatment cannot compare to those who suffered in the death camps under the Nazis. The author is very objective in his opinions and observations. I highly recommend this book for those interested in this subject.

The Best Resource for Communication Ever.......2005-07-22
This book is the best book I've ever read and studied on communication. This is why...I can "do it" all by myself. I don't have to have the other person's agreement to follow a certain format or dynamic. This book, single-handedly increased my skill in communication over 10 fold. The information has assisted me in facilitating groups, navigating difficult situations and discussions, resolving upsets and conflicts, and has greatly boosted my self confidence in relationships.
Anyone with a sincere desire to master communication skills must have a copy and study it often. This is a true jewel among the brightly colored stones.
Wonderful book, actually has ethical advise.......1998-12-18
Most books on persuasion teach you ways to find you "advesaries" weaknesses and exploit them. This book actually gives you the tools to persuade people through true understanding. It also allows the people involved to come to a decision together, so that no one feels like they were manipulated into the solution.
It is truly ethical!!

Book Description
In a series of moving and provocative conversations, nine members of the Israeli Defense Force tell why they refused to serve in the West Bank and Gaza. The "Refuseniks" describe their risky moral decision against the background of what is perhaps the most volatile conflict in the world today: the Israeli-Palestine struggle. Their individual choices and their collective activism have generated intense debate in Israel and the international community, from the leading Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz to a segment on 60 Minutes.
In a sociocultural mosaic of the refusenik movement and the political context in which it arose, these men recount their individual family backgrounds and beliefs. Dedicated to the welfare of their country and its religious heritage, they outline their concerns for the future of Israel. As they tell their stories of personal struggle, they also raise the disturbing and highly controversial issue of human rights abuses in the occupied territories.
These searching personal accounts of existential choice offer new perspectives on some entrenched ideas about the situation in the Middle East. The testimony in Breaking Ranks is essential background for a full understanding of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The refuseniks illuminate the inner workings of Israeli society by challenging what it most reveres, offering a new moral framework that reinforces a sense of belonging to Israel. In this time of grave crisis in the Middle East, with no solution in sight to repair the utter collapse of the peace process, these voices offer a message of hope in their commitment to their society and nation

Please read this book.......2007-08-17
I am a Muslim and the Quran says that those who believe in the one God will eventually be in heaven but those who did not follow they way of Islam are possibly going to be in Hell for a time. I hope the soldiers in this book will be spared hellfire. As I read it, I was amazed that I never heard of it before. These soldiers and their refusal to participate have been hidden from the public. They were on a segment of 60 minutes, but you will not find that video anywhere on the Internet, including Youtube and their website. Go ahead and try to find it.
In their own words, they say that Israel was "built on militarism racism" and "Many Jews have lost their Jewish souls" and The judges who order houses to be demolished are "prostltutes to the legal system" and about terrorism, the soldier in ch7 says boldly "We have sown the seed's, grown them, and nurtured them." He later says with courage "I refuse to be a terrorist in my tribes name." I am sure this book is banned in Israel but I wish that all Americans could read it at least once. If it was hard for me to find it, then I know the majority of concerned Americans dont know it exists.
Telling the truth.......2005-09-25
Several courageous Israeli reservists who have refused to serve in the illegally occupied Palestinian territories captured by Israel in 1967 tell why they have chosen not to serve. They are part of a group of several hundred Israeli reservists who have said that they will serve within Israel's 1967 borders but that they will no longer fight beyond those borders to "dominate, expel, starve and humiliate an entire people." Many of these brave reservists spent time in Israeli prisons for their principled actions.
The reservists speak of the brutalization of the Palestinian people by the Israeli army, a brutalization which in turn brought about the anger of the Palestinian people toward them and toward Israeli Jews. They speak of the humiliation faced by both young and old Palestinians at the ever present checkpoints when young Israeli soldiers would torment Palestinians by tearing up their required identification papers, making them sit in the hot sun without shelter, sending them back home even when they had a permit to visit the doctor or go to school or occasionally beating them just for sport.
This book is a real eye opener for those who get their information about Israel and the occupation from the main stream corporate press. It serves to help readers understand more of the Israeli/Palestine conflict and it is also important because it shows that there is a segment of Israeli society that knows that the occupation is reprehensible and unconscionable. They have been there.
Courage to Refuse.......2003-10-10
Thought provoking essays that explore the conscience and consciousness of each `refusenik's soul searching, and their journey to refusal. To date 550 IDF soldiers have either refused, or pledged to refuse serving in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. That is a huge number!
The stories these soldiers tell, will often give you a glimpse into both Israeli and Palestinian society, showing how people's perception are shaped, and mindsets nearly paralyzed by governments and leaders ( on both sides ) that have cultivated only fear and hate over the years, why it must end, and how.
The author throws out tough questions to them, challenging both their patriotic duty and moral convictions. I feel they answer with great clarity and conviction. All the men in this book are well educated, and articulate. All have served in the occupied territories at one point or another, and have either committed or witnessed first hand, lets call them brutalities. They all are deeply devoted to Israeli society and believe that "the best way to serve their society is not to perpetuate its injustices"
There are some stark warnings to heed in this book. Many times American dogma and mindset after 9-11 and the `War on Terror' is cited as an analogy to give reference to the phenomenon of jingoistic thinking taking place.
This book was written before the recent refusal of 27 Israeli pilots who refused to take part in targeted assassinations, claiming that they resulted in civilan deaths, and that "the black flag of illegality is waving."
Do not think for a moment that the decision to refuse came easily for these men. It did not. Many will tell you it took years to shake off the deeply entrenched mindset that has gripped Israeli society, and is always being fed by a media that is one sided, and a government that is short-sighted.
Whether you agree with these soldiers or not, every American should read this book, because by virtue of our American citizenship alone, makes all of us a part in this struggle, whether we want to be or not. The time is now to truly understand the issues as they exist today, and reevaluate what America's moral role ought to be.
Life Changing.......2003-07-15
This book has catapultited me into a new level of consciousness!
I have been waiting for a book to educate me on this topic and not only have I been educated, but moved to look into activism on this issue. I am neither Jewish nor very knowledgeable in politics. This book is right to the point and I found myself totally engrossed. The men in this book are awesome and I am proud to walk the planet with them. They are educated, brave, compassionate and passionate. I hope that you not only read Breaking Ranks, but go to the website afterwards and become involved in some way.
Book Description
It is a commonplace that in making decisions agents often have to juggle competing values, and that no choice will maximize satisfaction of them all. However, the prevailing account of these cases assumes that there is always a single ranking of the agent's values, and therefore no unresolvable conflict among them. Isaac Levi denies this assumption, arguing that agents often must choose without having balanced their different values and that to be rational, an act does not have to be optimal, only what Levi terms "admissible." This book explores the consequences of denying the assumption and develops a general approach to decision-making under unresolved conflict. Professor Levi argues not only against the "strict Bayesian" position, but also against all the recent attempts to develop alternative models to Bayesianism. The book, which continues from his earlier The Enterprise of Knowledge, is certain to make an original and controversial contribution to the debates over choice theory.
