Book Description
Recognized and respected for both its inclusion of cutting edge material and for its strong strategic managerial approach, this is one of the most comprehensive and challenging, yet approachable and understandable legal environments texts on the market. It is equally suitable for students with substantial work experience as well as for those who are studying business for the first time. The text fully looks at the subject matter from the perspective of current and future business managers and leaders by providing an in-depth understanding of how law impacts daily management decisions and business strategies. Its integrated treatment of law and management presents a very strategic perspective, showing how the law provides ways for managers to minimize risk and create value, how to use the law to craft solutions to attain core business objectives, and how to spot legal issues before they become legal problems and effectively handle the inevitable legal disputes that arise in the course of doing business.
Customer Reviews:
not worth it.......2002-08-12
There are many better books out there that are easier to follow and comprehend if you are not a law student. Not impressive.
Indispensable for Execs, Mgrs, Invest. Pros, Mgmt Consultant.......2000-08-13
For the benefit of all the people who cannot take her course, Prof. Connie Bagley has written this book that has the same title as her course (she teaches a quarter each at the Stanford and Harvard Business Schools). It is an extremely very well thought out and well written book. Throughout the book Prof. Bagley has kept in mind the reader's background and organized and written content in a way that will be of maximum benefit to the reader.
This book is one of the best investments that any person can make. While almost everyone will benefit from this book, I feel this book will be indispensable to the following readers: 1. Any person in a Business Administration/Management role, especially Executives and Managers in large corporations, Investment Professionals and Management Consultants. 2. Professionals associated with legal matters who want a refresher and a quick reference book that covers key aspects of all the important laws. 3. Any person who wants to gain a knowledge of the legal environment, especially the environment in which business is conducted.
Unlike a law book intended for specialist lawyers, this book is readable by people who are not lawyers. After reading this book or using it as a reference one can get a good understanding of the legal process (how the entire legal system works) and several important areas of law such as Contracts, Torts, Product Liability, Intellectual Property, Labor, Environmental, Antitrust, Real Estate, Consumer protection, Securities, and International Business. The legal topics discussed are on the leading edge of business regulation. They include the World Trade Organization, employer liability for sexual harassment, compensation and liability act, and HIV in the workplace.
In keeping with the Internet age, Prof. Bagley analyzes the implications of the Internet and Information Technology to several laws (such as copyright law in the cyberspace), and also gives several Internet sources for the reader to conduct further research.
It is remarkable that the book covers each of the topics perfectly to the extent required - nothing more and nothing less. The book has around 1050 pages and the time invested in each page is worth the rewards.
As Prof. Bagley says, the purpose of the book is to provide you a good understanding of the legal system, how the laws work, removal of any fear of laws, how to avoid legal mistakes, how to protect yourself, when to take what legal action and, most importantly, make you smart enough to know when to go to your lawyer. You cannot expect to practice law after reading this book but you definitely will know when to seek legal help, and how to communicate effectively with your legal advisors.
Prof. Bagley has also written another book "The Entrepreneur's Guide to Business Law". If only every entrepreneur read this book before starting out, the number of failures caused by legal blunders will be close to zero.
Both her books are extremely very well thought out and well written. I was fortunate to get into Prof. Connie Bagley's high demand "Managers and the Legal Environment" course at Stanford Graduate School of Business. The course is an absolute gem of a course. While this course is a high demand course, her other course "Legal Challenges in Entrepreneurship" is usually multiply over subscribed with around 150 students wanting to get into a class of 66! Prof. Bagley is a wonderful teacher and an amazing person. Her class was a wonderful learning experience for me and I thank her for that. I'm sure that after reading the book you too will thank her for having written this book.
Great overview of main legal issues for managers.......1998-12-02
This book is amongst others used at the Stanford MBA course as an introduction to legal issues that may arise for managers in a variety of business situations. It is comprehensive and is well illustrated with landmark case studies and relevant hypotheticals. Constance Bagley takes out most of the cumbersome legalistic language and makes the complexities of US corporate and civil law understandable.

Richest Man in babylon--good advice.......2007-09-07
An easy read, interesting story, excellent advice.
My wife and I have read it and will pass it on to our son. I will buy copies for several friends
Amazing read........2007-08-23
This book teaches through examples.
Easy read, was able to finish it in a couple days. But it has a store of knowledge that will probably be able to last me a lifetime.
The older version was better........2007-08-20
I read the Revised version (1995) and really enjoyed that. I purchased the 21st Century edition and was really disappointed. Some key ideas that I thought were very important like "don't get so consumed with acquiring wealth that you forget to enjoy life" were taken out of this edition. Also an entire chapter was removed that taught the importance of hard work. Not only that but the layout of book is much less aesthetically pleasing, making it more difficult to read. So I wouldn't buy this edition. I highly recommend the revised edition (yellow cover).
Babylon for babies.......2007-07-30
Might be a good book to read to the kid. However, a bright child might get bored with the repetitiion. One get's it by the second chapter.
I don't usually go contrary to conventional wisdom, but . . . .......2007-06-25
I've got to disagree with all the five-star reviewers.
This book is thoroughly unremarkable, and contains some solid but very shallow advice. Is the greatest desire of your heart to be wealthy? Then you're ripe for exploitation by those who are intelligent enough to use you for their stepping-stone. Want to be the richest man in Babylon? Then write a book telling other people what it takes.
If you really don't understand that you need to invest your money in order to become wealthy (but really want to be rich) then you will get something out of this book. Otherwise, don't waste your time (little as it takes to get through it) and money.
Were it not for the eye-catching title and somewhat interesting use of parables, this book would have gone nowhere. As it is, it is an unremarkable effort, even for a man whose only other claim to fame was starting a mapping business that went under during the Great Depression.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book!.......2007-08-01
Excellent book! A must read for progressive line-level officers and aspiring police supervisors and command staff. The only practical book of its kind on the market. Although not red lights and sirens oriented, the book emphasizes ethical leadership skill development for frontline officers as well as police managers.
The book is well cited. The experts cited lend support, credibility, and validity to the authors' position. As stated in the book, the goal is to deploy officers to the field who are self-contained ethical leadership agents capable of demonstrating effective communications, critical thinking and problem solving skills.
I highly recommend the Meese and Ortmeier book.
Dry, boring and over quoted.......2006-11-10
I purchased this book for a sergeant's promotional exam for my Department. While this book does touch on some good issue that are relevent in today's policing world, the authors delivered it in such a dry manner that I could barely sit for more than a half hour at a time reading it.
The authors also constantly use quotes from other researchers and authors, it makes you wonder how much of the information is actually written by them. Most chapters could be written in under three pages, but for some reason the authors over write in an apparent attempt to make the information sound collegial.
Trust me, only purchase this book if it a required one for an exam. Other than that, if you need something other than a ambien to fall asleep, this could work.

Leadership: Theory and Practice

Book Description
For the Common Good showcases the insights, reflections, and recommendations of some of today's most forward-thinking and inspiring leaders, as they explore the challenges of leadership in the context of our global, 21st-century society. Featuring original essays by such luminaries as Nobel Prize winner John Hume; Leader-to-Leader Chair Frances Hesselbein; Harvard University's Howard Gardner; M.K. Gandhi Institute's Founder Arun Gandhi; poet David Whyte; and President Jimmy Carter, For the Common Good stresses the need for a new kind of leadership committed to promoting social welfare, justice, and opportunity. Against the all-too-familiar backdrop of corporate malfeasance, scandal in our religious institutions, political chicanery to serve ulterior motives, and constant reminders of the corruptive influences of power, the contributors apply their expertise in such fields as ecology, education, and conflict resolution to illuminate emerging roles and responsibilities of today's leaders. Collectively, the authors argue that because individuals, institutions, and societies are now so profoundly connected and inter-related, every decision of consequence has a ripple effect. Leaders of all stripes, including corporate executives, politicians, social activists, scientists, and educators, must display courage, integrity, humility, and the wherewithal to consider the long-term impact of their decision and actions. Most important, they must engage in dialogue and recognize that creative solutions to complex problems require collaboration across sectors and cultures to achieve common goals. The result is a provocative and multidimensional exploration of leadership in troubled and troubling times--but with a hopeful note that individuals and organizations will rise to the challenges.

Book Description
In Cannibals with Forks, best-selling author and green business guru John Elkington convincingly argues that future market success will often depend upon a company's ability to satisfy the three-pronged fork of profitability, environmental quality, and social justice. This lively and practical guide outlines the seven great "sustainable" revolutions that are already unfolding, showing how business leaders should respond and profiles some of the world's best-known companies including Nike, Wal-mart, Levi Strauss, Volkswagen, Texaco, Intel, Volvo, Dow Chemical, Electrolux, Novo Nordisk, and Shell.
Customer Reviews:
Global view on sustainability.......2003-06-12
Do not expect from this book practical guidelines to become "sustainable" as some reviewers seemed to have expected. This book explains in detail what sustainability involves, three majors fields: economical, social and environmental that the author called the triple bottom line. Each field has been for long separated from each other and the new trend for sustainability is to make them working together. How? There are no answers in this book. This book does not want to offer solutions but just to show us that this so-called revolution has already started, based on existing facts and where these changes are taking places.
Low on content and little practical guidance.......2003-04-01
This book is bogged down in useless metaphores and imprecise, whooly language - well suited neither for practical decision-makers nor serious academics. Claims are not explained sufficiently well, and we are left guessing how to solve - or even understand - the important problems that this book claims to adress.

a guide to get from here to there.......2003-01-28
Elkington has created an awesome nuts and bolts description of where we have been, where we are, and where we are going. If The Ecology of Commerce (Paul Hawken) lays the visionary groundwork, this book is the next step. It adds in a lot of detail, bringing to light many cases and ideas about specific problems. It is a slow read but well worth the time.
The bible of sustainability.......2001-03-14
You can expect a complete perspective from the head of an organisation called SustainAbility on sustainability. That is what you get. John Elkington makes a useful classification of Non Governmental Organisations. The polarisers don't want to have anything to do with business. Business is in principle bad and should be watched and harassed. The integrators try to add two additional dimensions to business, environmental and social responsibility. Discriminators differentiate between good and bad businesses and the non-discriminators do not. This book is for the discriminating integrators. John Elkington believes that it is possible and necessary to get all businesses to act responsibly concerning profit and social and environmental issues- the triple bottom line. The book provides an excellent historical perspective of why businesses are moving on from the Friedman doctrine stating that the only social responsibility of a business is to make a profit. A business that wants to move in the sustainability direction can use the book to find out where it is on the path to full sustainability. The book also makes many practical suggestions on how to move forwards. The book is equally useful for NGOs, and public policy makers.

Book Description
A growing trend toward knowledge workers and more highly educated employees has made effective human resource management a key metric separating the corporate wheat from the chaff. Studies confirm that the way people are managed and developed delivers a higher return on investment than new technology, R&D, competitive strategy or quality initiatives. In this book, the authors contend that the broader management models of Management by Instructions and Management by Objectives fail to position organizations for competitive success. What is needed is a strategic leadership tool whose practical application will mine market potential through its relevance to individual organizational members. With a step by step guide to implementation, Managing by Values is just such a tool.

Book Description
Reading about ethics is no walk in the park. The issues are thorny, and they can cause discomfort. Some of the topics discussed and the positions taken by the various authors may raise your blood pressure. The issues are, however, essential to the profession and thoughtful reading and discussion are essential to the discipline.
Typical uses for this work will be class discussion among students of school libraries and school administration. The individual chapters can be taken as independent readings, or the discussion questions may form the basis for class discussion or individual research papers. Practicing professionals may want to read the entire book for a book study group, or to simulate policy-making discussions on the ethical practices of the profession.

Customer Reviews:
A Very Nice Anthology.......2005-08-30
A nice accessible anthology for biz ethics. Could use some updating. Introductions tended to be very helpful to students without any background in philosophy.
Very good text........2003-04-09
Adams and Maine(s) have put together a very good text for standard business ethics classes, or for anyone seeking a comprehensive and readable introduction to the topics and issues in business ethics. I have used it in my classes for a number of years and find it covers the topics in depth and breadth. Students have also found it clear and understandable. One drawback, as with any text for a college level course, is that some topics I would include are omitted. However, this is true of almost any text in the field and for each individual instructor. The other drawback is that for some issues it could use just a bit more "pro-con" selections and presentations. Overall, the issues are presented fairly and in a balanced manner. The stengths of the text outweigh its weaknesses by far.
