Book Description
This woman's experience is far from unusual. As authors Pat Heim and Susan Murphy have learned through twenty years of corporate consulting on gender differences, time and again, professional women fail to support one another and even actively sabotage their female colleagues with subterfuge and "catfights."
The fact is, relationships can be either the best or the worst things to happen to women at work. Studies have shown that women have a greater capacity than do men to encourage and improve each other's professional performance-with better results for all if their relationships are good, and worse results if they are not.
In In the Company of Women, Heim and Murphy draw from the latest research on brain structure, evolution, and socialization to explain why women's workplace relationships are unique. They describe what makes catfights happen-and how to avoid them. With startling insights into the meaning of everyday behavior, they offer straightforward techniques to change female conflict into female alliances by resolving discord peaceably, making the most of women's unique leadership skills, and building relationships with female superiors, colleagues, and employees.

Interesting reading.......2007-09-18
This book was pretty good. The first part validated what I pretty much figured out for myself the hard way. At least with the knowledge you get from this book that this type of behavior and attitude is universal among women everywhere and is "normal," you can deal with it more constructively or let it go more easily instead of dwelling on it. I did enjoy reading the first part of the book - probably 3/4 of the book was helpful because it validates what you know or can sense about what is going on around you, and that is empowering and reassuring. The guidance given in this book for dealing with other women is somewhat like remembering difficult algorithms though. And, unless you can convince every other woman you ever deal with to read the book and follow precisely the "rules" you have to follow in order to have perfect harmony among the women in your life, you still have to just use your gut instinct on how to deal with each particular woman or...well, you already know what will happen or you wouldn't be interested in reading this type of book! To be honest, I started reading the last part of the book (which directly relates to being in a supervisory position) and just couldn't read any more.
Wishing everyone (men and women) would read this!.......2007-05-08
I have struggled my entire life in relationships with women. This book opened my eyes.
Interesting theories, apply as you will.......2007-02-04
This is a thought-provoking book, and I recommend it for any woman, whether you work in an office or not. It says much about the conflicts that arise between us, the reasons behind them, and some solutions on how to handle them.
One of my favorite chapters was "Handling Conflicts With Style." I recently covered conflict styles in a college freshman seminar course, and I appreciated how they were expanded in this chapter. There are some interesting paragraphs on ow to handle sabotage and deliberate distractions, two things I have experienced firsthand and was poor at resonding to.
There are many wonderful suggestions in the chapter "How To Be An Effective Female Leader." Several aspects of leadership are discussed, and skills are suggested in detail, to balance the troubles many female leaders experience.
There are some parts of the book, however, that I do no agree with.
Although the Power Dead-Even Rule is absolutely true in every respect, it does little to solve the problem that I have with power-hungry, conrolling women in my work environment. Honestly, why should I care what gets a co-worker to turn against me? Of course, having some knowledge of the root of the problem is extremely beneficial at maintaining some sort of balance. At the end of the day, however, I am able to put my head on the pillow and fall asleep based simply on the advice I received from a dear friend:
It's not my business what other people think of me.
This may sound like foolish advice at first, but you know what? It's TRUE.
And the advice to use gossip as a tool is WAY off the mark. I have been able to maintain my position at my job for many years based on a principle that I believe deeply in - that gossip does NOTHING to improve anyone's character. You want to build trust among your coworkers? Don't gossip!! Find something else in common to discuss.
I'm a little irritated at the excuses given for indirect aggression - you know what? A person's personal issues should be worked out before or after work, there's no excuse for a bitch.
Downplaying your achievements is good to keep in mind. But ultimately, you really should be yourself, not a puppet. My point is, when you apply what you gain from this book, don't forget what you have learned before.
This Book has Changed my Life........2006-05-08
I have to say, I felt pretty disgusted with myself, having to pretend to be insecure and self-depreciating, just to get other women to like me. But by God it works.
I tested the techniques out on my very next female customer. I refused to accept her compliments, kept downplaying myself and my accomplishments, while praising her instead and pointing out all the ways in which I felt she was better.
Result: She LOVED me. We actually linked arms and skipped! No kidding! She convinced her husband to give me $500 on a job that wasn't worth half that much money.
Not only is this book helpful in avoiding petty jealousy, the evil eye, and female sabotage, applied to business situations it can be a real cash cow!!! $$$
Take those psychology books that advise you to "Project Self Confidence!" and "Toot Your Own Horn!" and throw them in the garbage. If you are not a man, that will not work for you.
This one tip alone will save your friendships: Don't you dare ever tell a woman good news. If you have good news tell a man. If you have bad news tell a woman.
If you're just bustin' to tell all the girls how your new boyfriend is rich, famous and hunky, DON'T, unless you a have your own personal security detail and somebody willing to start your car for you.
If they find out anyway, make your good fortune sound negative. Tell them he beats you and he slept with your sister. : P
I can sum the whole book up for you: Women can't stand to see another woman happy, especially if they're not. Better learn how to operate within the "Power Dead Even" Rule.
Women Working Wisely.......2006-02-06
This book has been an invaluable reference and resource for me. Pat Heim's experience in addressing relationally aggressive behaviors between women in the workplace shows through in every page she writes. With "In the Company of Women" she adds one more feather to her impressive cap and advances each reader's understanding of this important issue.

In The New Pioneers, Thomas Petzinger brings alive the people who are leading a revolution in American business. Petzinger contends that fundamental changes in the U.S. economy are being spurred by technology that obliterates old boundaries as well as new freedoms in the workplace and the efforts of entrepreneurs with a zeal for innovation and customer service. "We can't yet see it everywhere, but a great awakening is now under way in business," he writes.
A columnist for The Wall Street Journal, Petzinger spent three years traveling across America to interview management gurus and businesspeople at the forefront of this economic seachange. He discovered that large and small businesses alike are succeeding by abandoning the old command-and-control ethos. In today's best-run companies, he notes, employees are getting the leeway to manage themselves. Petzinger profiles people as diverse as Pete and Laura Wakeman of Dillon, Montana, who built the Great Harvest Bakery chain by making their company more of a community than a corporation; Nick Gleason, a Harvard Business School graduate who eschewed a big salary to launch an Internet design company in a Boston ghetto; and Richard Knowles, who turned around a struggling West Virginia chemical plant for the Dupont Corporation. Provocative and well written, The New Pioneers is for top managers, regular working people, and anyone who loves a good business yarn. --Dan Ring
Book Description
The New Pioneers introduces the entrepreneurs who are revolutionizing the way America does business -- from bankers to bakers, weavers to Web designers, manufacturers to medical researchers. In dozens of entertaining case histories and personal profiles, Thomas Petzinger shows that old-fashioned corporations are losing out to innovators engaged in creating collaborative workplaces, a value-added marketplace, and an economy overflowing with opportunity. Through compelling storytelling and incisive analysis, he illuminates how and why:
- Technology is replacing economies of scale with economies of scope and locality
- Today's entrepreneurs are redefining the meaning of "niche"
- Radical compensation and motivation strategies are establishing a new kind of workforce
- The family firm can serve as a model for all business
- The new business ethos signals a return to fundamental values

Thought Provoking - Insightful - But does not stick. .......2007-07-22
The late 1990's were hit by a surge of entrepreneurialism in the United States. This was entrepreneurial drive was fueled by technology, the internet, a booming economy and "can do" attitude that emerged among US citizens. The US are still benefiting from this entrepreneurial boom, in spite of the stock market crash in 2000, over 20 million jobs have been created in entrepreneurial organisations in the US in the past 15 years.
In the late 1990's Tomas Petzinger, a Wall Street Journal columnist, set out to uncover the motivation and drivers of the individuals that were establishing exciting new businesses. He uncovers a series of engaging stories about courageous and pioneering entrepreneurs who transformed their personal situations by creating intriguing new jobs and enterprises to meet the needs of the new economy.
These are real stories of real people overcoming real challenges to create real opportunities. These stories generate a ray of hope & inspiration for South Africans wishing to establish an entrepreneurial venture to benefit from the economic boom that this country is experiencing. The stories in the book do not provide a text book model for exactly how things should be done but they are a source of insightful ideas and engaging metaphors to inspire and guide would be entrepreneurs. The stories in this book are also not the common stories that we have heard time and time again. Petzinger has purposefully ignored the Starbucks, Google, Amazon.com and eBay stories so that he could uncover tales of individuals who have done extraordinary things outside of the limelight.
Petzinger illustrates how technology creates new opportunities for start-up niche players to establish profitable businesses. He explores what motivates and drives generation X entrepreneurs and he examines how a new venture with social meaning brings purpose and profit. Although the book was written seven years ago, it can still serve as a guiding light and foundation for inspiration, especially for South Africans wishing to pioneer new ways of doing things to make a meaningful impact in this country and abroad.
internet economy crud. Some non-internet stuff.......2001-12-27
Mediocre at best. Mostly "New economy" crud. Good stuff about real entrepreneurs who are not at all in high-tech or internet spaces, but that stuff is just not news.
"The Arrow of Evolution....".......2000-05-23
In Chapter 10 of Leading Change, James O'Toole discusses Robert Owen (1771-1858) whom he characterizes as "the Thomas Edison of social invention. He was the first to devise or advocate numerous practices in industrial relations, education, and social policy that are still considered progressive today, more than 130 years after his death." In The New Pioneers, Petzinger focuses on the contemporary world in which a "revolution" is now underway in business, "for the most part invisible in the headlines and the boardrooms, but dizzying in its effect on the front lines." Much of what he discusses is directly relevant to Owen's initiatives. He agrees with Abraham Maslow that "the most valuable one hundred people to a deteriorating society" would be entrepreneurs because "the arrow of evolution flies toward the pioneering."
Over the years, I have learned a great deal from reading Petzinger's column in the Wall Street Journal, "The Front Lines." He is constantly alert to subtle but potentially significant developments within and beyond the ever-changing workplace. The material he shares in this brilliant book is drawn from "the front lines" of companies based in more than 40 cities in 30 states as well as several companies in foreign countries.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who seeks answers to questions such as these:
1. Which "new frontiers" offer the greatest opportunities for institutional growth and human development?
2. Which economies of scale are most relevant to such growth?
3. To optimize development of "human capital" in small-to-midsize organizations, which strategies (eg incentives and rewards) work best?
4. Which of these strategies will also be effective in larger organizations?
5. Amidst turbulent change caused by new technologies, which traditional values will enable any organization to nourish its "human systems"?
To succeed in what he calls "The Age of Adaptation" (the subject of his Introduction), Petzinger asserts that organizations (regardless of size or nature) must cope effectively with certain "new realities" which serve as the subtitles of the book's ten chapters. For example: "Trade and technology are fundamentally human", "Why the new rules favor the small and connected", "The customer is the common denominator", and "Knowledge and self-organization flourish at the edge of chaos." It is important to reiterate that Petzinger's observations and assertions are based on a wealth of real-world experience. He is firmly convinced that "We, our tools, and the businesses by which we accomplish nearly everything are all products of the natural world." Although granting that "Wrong turns and backsliding will occur from time to time", Petzinger is convinced that each new age will produce another generation of "pioneers" who will continue to transform a global marketplace which is rapidly becoming the same workplace for nearly everyone.
Morality Play for Businesses -- Great Small Company Examples.......2000-04-16
Reading The New Pioneers is a pleasant occupation. On theother hand, reviewing this book for people who have not yet read it isa challenging task. This is primarily because the book is written to be read and understood at many different levels.
The simplest and most obvious level is as a series of charming stories in the best humanistic tradition that demonstrate that there is good business in being a good human.
At a deeper level, Mr. Petzinger is also telling us that the economy is changing in a fundamental way because of the experiences of small and middle sized business leaders, such as those cited in the book.
Beyond that, he is suggesting something fundamental about human civilization and its potential to create astonishingly positive results.
At whatever level you consider the book, you will be well rewarded for reading it.
I must admit that it is tempting to ignore the book's shortcomings, but that would shortchange the principles that Mr. Petzinger is exploring...
As heart-warming as this book is, it is a scrapbook rather than a vision for individual entrepreneurs. Its value for entrepreneurs is, nonetheless, quite substantial. The benefit comes from stimulating ideas among readers by showing new business examples that have not been widely published and discussed before. I hope all entrepreneurs will read this book for that important benefit.
A fine effort from a talented journalist! END
Home Run.......2000-02-12
Tom has done a fabulous job with his latest book. It clearly shows how top people get there and make their organizations top performers. The book is chock full of examples that are relevant. The style of writing is, of course, meant for us by being easy-to-read and descriptive. Buy it!
Also recommend a well-receoved book that addresses how managers can be top performers by focusing on bettering themselves, their co-workers, and their organizations. It's called ""The Leader's Guide: 15 Essential Skills."

Book Description
As women are entering the workforce in record numbers, there is an urgent need to address the specific ethical problems that working women face. Providing a conceptual framework from which practical issues can be addressed, the authors focus on sexual harassment, comparable worth, leadership, advertising, and working-class women. Theoretical concepts, applied cases, personal narratives, statistical data and charts are all included in this wide ranging treatment of ethics and working women. This is not merely a summary of others' work; it is a book that will frame debates on gender, ethics, business, and economics and serve as an exemplar for the critical treatment of basic human concerns.

An excellent teaching tool........2001-08-07
I have used Women Ethics and the Workplace for four years now teaching to undergraduate business and design students. My ethics class is definitely enhanced by the combination of helpful overviews of the major normative theories and the critical perspectives the book generates. The theory is supplemented by both empirical and statistical data and always sparks great discussion in my college classroom. The book is especially strong at illustrating for students the tensions of career versus family in a capitalist economy. This is a refreshing business ethics text that is theoretical without being dry, and critical without being pedantic. Should be used alongside classic ethics sources.

Book Description
While women have made progress toward equality in the workplace, gender issues continue to surface in today’s work environment. How are these issues best confronted? This brief collection of cases is designed to help students and employees gain a hands-on understanding of gender issues in the workplace and to provide the necessary tools to handle those issues. Based on actual legal cases, nationally reported incidents, and personal interviews, the case studies in
Gender in the Workplace address the range and types of gender issues in the workplace including:
- Gender stereotypes about work
- Gender discrimination in the workplace
- Balancing work and family responsibilities
- Sexual harassment issues
The case studies place the reader directly "in the action," by requiring the reader to conduct an analysis of real situation (appropriate supporting material, data, and discussion topics are provided) and to make decisions based on that analysis. Through completion of all five cases, the interaction of various gender issues, and the variations of issues in different organizational cultures and work settings are demonstrated. The concluding chapter is devoted to an examination of the connections between the five categories of gender issues explored in cases. An Instructor’s Manual provides additional resources and information that will assist in the discussion of case issues. Epilogues to each case pursued, and what occurred as a result.
This text is intended as a supplement for courses in Management, Human Resources, Public Administration, Gender Studies, Industrial Psychology, Social Psychology, and Sociology of Work. It will also be useful in consulting and training environments.

Understanding Diversity Through the Anglo-Saxon Male.......2006-06-28
Dr. Ipsaro, a double P.h. D. in Psychology and Administration, identifies a new and innovative way to change the productivity of a diverse workforce - including the white male. In a detailed and logical way, Ipsaro illuminates the history and role of white men, women and minorities in society and the work place. Ipsaro argues that many old world behaviors of the white male are still present today in businesses and society- mainly that they are still resource providers, directors and protectors. In essence, this means that they are still the ruling class and behaving by the standards of yester year. According to Ipsaro, the world has changed and most white males have not evolved into the new world. In order for diversity to be actively engaged in business, argues Ipsaro, the white male must become involved and lead the change. For instance, Ipsaro uses the Motorola Company as an example of a company that has empowered women and minorities. As a result, the company has promoted a substantial amount (more than 50 %) of women and minorities into senior leadership and management positions. The innovative change in diversity has positively impacted the morale and production of the company. With inclusion, as evidenced by Motorola, companies will be better served in diversity initiatives, and ultimately more successful businesses. Ipsaro concludes with a call for white males to become the driving force for leveraging diversity programs and incentives in the workplace.
SOME OF THE KEY THEMES OF THE BOOK INCLUDE:
* Inclusion of the white male is essential for positively changing the diversity of the workforce: Ipsaro notes that many white males are in senior management, and although many of these executives have planned and implemented diversity programs, few have included themselves in these programs. Ipsaro notes that old world values are obsolete in the world today, and white males must share leadership with women and minorities. This, in his words, would "relieve some of the burden" white males feel about leading a workforce. According to Ipsaro, this would allow more time for white males to balance personal and professional life and lead to a more diverse and productive work force.
* A fusion between organizational, unit, and self integrity is essential in developing a diverse workforce: Ipsaro notes that "trust is what holds a family, a group, an organization, a country together." Although everyone is different, argues Ipsaro, it is essential to find common bonds that unite a group in the pursuit of a common goal. Ipsaro notes training, group discussions, and an environment that encourages open dialogue as vehicles to increase self, unit, and organizational awareness of diversity in the workplace. Things such as empowering employees, matching talents to tasks, sharing and promoting a blending of cultures are keys to successful fusion in the workplace. This takes time and hard work.
Dr. Ipsaro is an expert is his field with many years of research and advisement on an international and national level in both the private and public sector. His concept that white males fail to include themselves in diversity movements is very relevant in the workplace today. Although White Men, Women and Minorities was published in 1997, it is still a legitimate reading in 2006 - as it touches on the issue of white males as diversity change agents in the workplace
