Book Description
This book sets out to assist counselors-to-be in developing an informed ethical conscience by first exploring and developing a theoretical understanding of the subject. The goal of the book is to acquaint readers with relevant ethical theory and to provide them exposure to real life ethical issues that are often messy, complex, multifaceted dilemmas that defy simple solutions. In this process, readers are encouraged to explore their own moral and ethical value systems as well as the codes they work from and to begin the formulation of an informed ethical conscience for making sound moral/ethical judgments.
Customer Reviews:
Well worth owning.......2004-09-17
This book was such a great reference and learning tool, that I had to buy it! I had this book in an online college class, which gave it to me as an esource, with no hard copy. While some chapters were dry, most of the book is easy to read and offers great scenarios to human service professionals.

The Elements of Moral Philosophy
ASIN: 0072339594 |
Book Description
Introduction to Engineering Ethics provides the background for discussion of the basic issues in engineering ethics. Emphasis is given to the moral problems engineers face in the corporate setting. It places those issues within a philosophical framework, and it seems to exhibit both their social importance and their intellectual challenge. The primary goal is to stimulate critical and responsible reflection on moral issues surrounding engineering practice and to provide the conceptual tools necessary for pursuing those issues.
As per new ABET 2000 guidelines, more and more introductory engineering courses cover engineering ethics as part of their instruction. Students preparing to function within the engineering profession need to be introduced to the basic issues in engineering ethics. This book places those issues within a wider philosophical framework than has been customary in the past and aims to stimulate critical and responsible reflection on the moral issues surrounding engineering practice and to provide the conceptual tools necessary for pursuing those issues.

For students beginning the management career trek, I’m confident that this book will become a trusted, well-worn text."
—David A.Whetten,

Customer Reviews:
Managing in the era of Globalization.......2005-03-30
So as to respond to the exigencies of globalization, the world of managing, managers and management has substantially changed in the last two decades or so. While some say that management discourse is to be viewed from the post-modernist perspective; others argue that we are reverting back to basics of management. Market, competition, competencies, capacity building, culture, diversity, empowerment, teams, lean organizations are some of the buzz words in general management literature today. Managers' commitment in the new era is being tested not on the touchstone of loyalty to the owner or the organization, but on performance and sensitivity to the needs of the organization and other stakeholders. In the era of globalization, the general topics in the discipline of management are also changing. But not all general management textbooks have shifted their focus adequately from traditional functions to the contemporary ones. The book under review meets this demand of the subject quite well.
Some of the salient features of this interesting text are as follows: The coverage of topics is quite comprehensive and updated, including issues like organizational politics, cultures, knowledge and learning, innovation and change, managing strategy and managing globalization. Each chapter provides overview of theories involved in succinct and lucid manner including the contemporary developments in the subject concerned. The theories involved have been traced in terms of their historical development. Each chapter prescribes suggested additional readings, most of which are path-breaking works. A good bit of additional material is also available in the form of maps, images, charts, and boxes as tools for learning and examining the material. Above all, this text meets requirements of a well-written text. The reader finds the narration in a tremendous flow. The text is also supported by an instructor's manual and an interactive website that provides additional material for teachers and students, including more cases, quick quizzes, short movies from experts introducing students to main themes, as well as a free online reader of important journal articles that relate to the topics discussed.
Writing inspiring textbook is an art. Throughout the book the authors are aware of what is happening in various areas of management today. The authors rightly call it "a realist guide to management". They have also succeeded well at several places questioning the supposedly unquestionable; quite a postmodernist venture. Coherence is remarkable; rarely does the reader encounter patches of disinterest in the concepts being elaborated.

Book Description
When economists wrestle with issues such as unemployment, inflation, or budget deficits, they do so by incorporating an impersonal, detached mode of reasoning. But economists also analyze issues that, to others, do not typically fall within the realm of economic reasoning, such as organ transplants, cigarette addiction, smoking in public, and product safety. Trade-Offs is an introduction to the economic approach to analyzing these controversial public policy issues.
Harold Winter provides readers with the analytical tools needed to identify and understand the trade-offs associated with these topics. By considering both the costs and benefits of potential policy solutions, Winter stresses that real-world policy decision making is best served by an explicit recognition of as many trade-offs as possible.
Intellectually stimulating yet accessible and entertaining, Trade-Offs will be appreciated by students of economics, public policy, health administration, political science, and law, as well as by anyone who follows current social policy debates.
Customer Reviews:
Short and sweet........2007-06-23
This no non-sense, straight to the point book demonstrates clearly that no solutions exist to any social situation. There are only trade-offs. I especially liked his argument that there may be too little smoking in the world.
Winter clearly understands that pleasure, life, and many other things do indeed have a dollar value associated with them. Ignoring this exposes you to a variety of logical flaws, leading to false or misleading solutions.
Excellent........2006-07-27
Excellent, EXCELLENT book.
Though, I beg to ask, why is it so short?
I started recommending this to students. And then told them not to waste their time with "Freakonomics".
Great text.......2006-05-23
For the past 6 months or so, I have been frantically searching for a text I can use for a second year policy econ course for non-majors. I'd found nothing that covered the range of topics I wanted or at the appropriate level. This text is perfect; I wish I'd found it before the uni bookstore's cut off date! Each chapter would have to be supplemented with additional readings to provide the appropriate depth, but the coverage is almost perfect for the kind of course I'm teaching. Strongly recommended.
Good stuff - and a good read.......2006-02-23
I like it! Economics made easy and fun, a la "Freakonomics."
The economics of policy.......2006-02-09
'Trade-offs' is a good introduction to the economic analysis of policy, with a message clearly conveyed by its title: There are trade-offs for every (public) policy. Excellent for explaining economic analysis to people with little background in economics.
Disagree with the previous reviewer's comparison with Freakonomics: Though both are good, Freakonomics describes things that are at the frontier of current economic research (in an amazingly clear way). So, Freakonomics offers both clarity and novelty, while (at least for most people educated in economics), Trade-Offs mostly offers the former.
I would have given Trade-Offs a four star, but I think it is a bit too short for the money.

No Margin, No Mission: Health Care Organizations and the Quest for Ethical Excellence
ASIN: 0195135601 |
Book Description
This is a lucid, readable discussion of ethical questions in health care as they arise on the business or organizational level: an effort to spell out an ethical perspective for healthcare organizations. It will be of use to students in health services management programs, health care professionals, healthcare administrators, and members of healthcare ethics committees. Hall begins with the ethical analysis of decision-making in the management of healthcare organizations and then addresses some of the questions of organizational ethics through an analysis of corporate social responsibility in for-profit and not-for-profit organizations and of the problem of uncompensated care. Later chapters take up patient development, community relations, diversity, employee relations, governmental relations, regulatory compliance and medical records. The author's analysis focuses on healthcare institutions as business organizations with many of the problems faced by corporate management in other fields but with the difference that health care holds a special place among human needs and has traditionally been viewed from an altruistic perspective. He gives special attention to the new standards on organizational ethics promulgated by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and includes many case studies not only to illustrate the main points but also to direct the reader's attention to peripheral aspects that can complicate theses issues.
Customer Reviews:
