In a wise and witty manner, brothers David and Tom Gardner, founders of the multimedia investment company The Motley Fool, impart their investment strategies to the adolescent masses with The Motley Fool Investment Guide for Teens. In eight teen-friendly sections, the brothers Gardner and writing partner Selena Maranjian demystify the stock market by describing and defining mutual funds, banking practices, IRAs, and drip investing. The authors also include numerous quotes from money-savvy adolescents who detail some of their rookie market moves in an attempt to help their peers steer clear of similar mistakes. Parents will approve of the strongly worded sections on credit card debt and the costly financial and physical tolls a smoking habit takes on both wallet and health. In fact, parents would do well to pick up this investment primer for their own edification, if they find the stock market a confusing and chaotic business. Loaded with worksheets, helpful Web sites on a variety of financial subjects, a concise glossary, and a comprehensive index, this is one investment guide that both generations can and will turn to again and again.
Traditionally, teens have been known for having a hard time seeing the proverbial Big Picture. But the Gardners respond admirably to this characteristic, by constantly emphasizing the fortune teens can make in the future by investing now and reminding them that investing money is the least labor-intensive way to make more of the desirable green stuff. A perfect gift for the burgeoning Warren Buffet in your life. (Ages 12 and older) --Jennifer Hubert

Good Book For All Ages.......2007-02-14
This book has reinforced what I have been preaching to my 17 year old for years......1) save and invest your money early, 2)live within your means as you get started in life (used vs new car), 3) attend the local university (keep student loans to minimum) and 4) practice a healthy lifestyle and you will soon learn that by the time you are 30 you will have more financial freedom and less debt than 90% of Americans.
I wish I had been taught the discipline for the first two items as it wasn't until age 40 that I reached financial freedom. Fortunately for him, he is a believer after reading this book. Maybe along the way he will guide others in the right direction.
The Best Way to Enjoy Finance & Economics.......2006-02-27
This books gives the true value of savings: a life worth dreamings about and investments we make for it to see it happen. This is a sweet and funny little book that makes money look exciting as a tool and token. I see this book as the clues to playing a cool video game. (More, like the hint book.) It's so casual that you think your reading Reader's Digest. You never feel confused! Math teacher's, parents, middle schoolers, high school students, college students, retirees: you'll love this book.
Yes, a good money book for teens, but the voice is annoying........2005-05-03
This book will basically focus on the way the stock market works and how to invest in it. It also tells you how much you can save in the future. It is the meat of the book when it comes to the stock market, but the book will also teach you the cost of bad habits such as smoking and the upsides of credit cards if used right. The book teaches you how to get your money's worth in the bank, teaching you everything from how they make money to what a cd is. The worst thing about this book that annoyed me so much, I took off a point, was that they try to write the book in a type of slang format. Going from saying the word dawg and writing rock lyrics about the book. This is very annoying, but the tips this book gives are just too valuble to detour you alway.
I recommend it to anyone of any age.
Great intro financial / investing book for **everyone**.......2005-02-08
I only skimmed this book (after all, I own almost all the other TMF books!), but I think this book is by far one of the best financial books for **any** new investor, regardless of age. While other books may have more content, this is one of the most approachable financial and investing books I've read. (Plus, its worksheets **force** you practice what you read!) Readable by adults, too!
This book is the beginning of your future.......2005-01-24
I am in college. I guess I got this information kind of late. I actually started my first job way later than other kids.
I think this book inspired me to save and invest in my future. I did not know a freaking thing about investing till this came along. The thing I found most suprising was that you don't need any knowlege of the stock market to come out ahead. They make it so simple...and its life changing. I recommend this book if you want to be able to survive comfortabley when your retired.
Start saving and investing now! buy the book.

Should you let a Fool tell you where to invest your money? If he's a Motley Fool, the answer is a resounding YES! David and Tom Gardner launched the most successful investment information service ever to grace cyberspace, and now they show you how to beat the market, even if you don't know a dividend from a divining rod. With this guide, you'll find out how the information revolution can put money in your pocket.
Amazon.com Audiobooks Review
"Thanks to online communication," say David and Thomas Gardner, founders of the Motley Fool investment Web site, "it is now little-guy investors, not huge-guy brokerage firms, who hold the most valuable cards." The Gardners, narrating their own Guide, lay out their Foolish market-beating techniques like the college economics instructors you wish you'd had. They explain, in everyday language (and with just the right touch of sarcasm), exactly why some people do better than others when they invest their money. Most important, they tell how you can be one of the few who do better. (Running time: 1.5 hours, one cassette) --Lou Schuler

Customer Reviews:
Their stock picking strategy to think about............2007-10-03
Overall,a well-written, easy to follow, and a solid book for people who attain a basic knowledge about mutual funds and stocks. This book is a must read for people who are interested in learning, exploring and testing stock picking techniques and for people who believe in the importance of doing fundamental analysis (financial ratios, data, etc.)when selecting the right company to invest in. The book offers a useful eight-item checklist that investors most follow when choosing the best small cap growth stocks. Also offers the pertient ratios from balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow that investors need to pay careful attention to when picking the right small cap stocks. The Motley fool shows a reader another way to make a positive return on stocks which is perfectly set for investors who hold a pessimistic view on the future economy of U.S. The book recommends them to short stocks. Shorting stocks is the complete opposite of buying stocks. The way that one makes a profit when shorting stocks is when the original purchase price plunges down and one buys back the stock. Certainly, another interesting way to make profit in the stock market. In addition, the book provides an useful general overview of how companies go public (IPO) to issue stocks to investors to raise money, how common people can either look for brokers, discount brokers, deep discount brokers, or directly purchase stocks from the company to avoid paying commissions to purchase stocks online, and etc.
However, not recommended book for readers who are technical investors because the book never delves into the subject of technical analysis but gives a short overview of why they dislike the method and should not be used when picking stocks. Unless, a technical investor believes in studying and doing both fundamental and technical analysis to pick the best stock, then yes, go ahead and purchase this book. They do a good job of analyzing the company fundamentally. Moreover, not the right book for option and future investors because they have a little knowledge in this area.
In conclusion, if you want to know how to analyze company fundamentally, purchasing this book should help but be wary and skeptical about one chapter that discusses about dow dividend investment technique. The brothers give false hope to investors that anybody is guaranteed a 25.5% annual growth return for 20 years if they buy 2 of the second lowest and 1 of third, fourth, and fifith lowest price from 30 dow stocks or called foolish 2-2-3-4-5 approach. This might be true in the past 20 years but due to our unstable and unforeseeable economy in the future, a stock return of 25.5 % for 20 years is highly unlikely to happen. A likely situation we can experience is witnessing another stock market crash or seeing a rise of inflation 4 % every year making 25.5% return look a dismal 14%. The only aspect on their approach to Dow investment that I agree with is their claim about the safeness of dow stocks. Nobody can argue this claim since Dow stocks consist of 30 well-established companies which have been in business for a century and it would be hard picturing them filing bankruptcy.
Overall, I would give a 3.5 star to this book.
Fool Some of the People All of the Time.......2007-08-09
The Motley Fools, for a novice investor, can be a life changing experience. "The proof of the pudding is in the eating" and their savvy insights regarding investments have served me well. Their stock market insights are delivered with wit and wisdom, and I was actually sad when I turned the last page and realized I had finished the book. That's my personal criteria for a well written book, does it leave you wanting more. The Fools deliver.
Book.......2007-05-13
Took the full 10 days to get here, after the 3 days until it shipped. But the condition of the book is excellent since it was a used book. And can't beat the price. Better than taking notes of the contents in Borders.
Motrley Fool Investment Guide.......2006-06-25
Good primer for the beginner stock trader. Also an excellent review for those who have "been around"
The Best Investment Book For Beginners- seems too good to be true, but it is RIGHT!.......2006-02-19
1) I read the book, and tried it out without actually spending money; my portfolio soared.
2) I put money in; my portfolio soared.
3) I added more; my portfolio soared.
4) The market dropped; my portfolio soared.
5) The market soared; my portfolio soared more.
It's so simple; it does seem too good to be true; but it is all correct! I hoped to beat the market by 1-2 %, and to beat pro's by 3-4% (since they do underperform the market 90% of the time!).
I have absolutely hammered the market, just like the Gardeners say in this book.
Two of my closest friends have done/ been doing so also.
In my last 3-4 years I have averaged 43% average COMPOUND gain. I trebled my money in 3 years.
I have bought this book for other friends, and recommended it to many, many more.
Basically, it teaches you to only buy very, very safe companies that are small enough to increase substantially in value (as more and more analysts start to cover their financials). It works.

Easy to understand and useful.......2007-07-20
I got this book a few weeks ago to get a feel for personal finance (I just turned 23 and i figured it was time) and it was oen of the best book purchases I ever made! It was laid out very simply with helpful charts and graphs so the math doesn't seem so abstract. Highly recommended!
Put this Workbook to Work.......2006-09-21
David and Tom Gardner have once again succeeded at making something difficult seem easy. As an estate planner, I know that many people avoid financial matters out of fear . . . fear that they're not smart enough to understand them. The Personal Finance Workbook puts valuable financial planning information at your fingertips and the forms to keep track of your finances are right in the book. If you are just starting out after college, or a Baby Boomer beginning to think about retirement, or someone retired, this workbook will be immediately useful. On a more personal level, as a dad, I am glad that a personal finance book like The Workbook exists. Young people who take early action on managing their finances and developing good savings habits will be infinitely better off in the long run.

Great book..........2005-11-30
I bought this book about a year after college, when I wanted to come up with a plan to get rid of some credit card debt and begin saving money. This guide is fun and interesting, yet informative. It guides you step-by-step through good personal finance habits, and allows you to prioritize what goals you have for the future. The most insightful to me was when it asks you to name the things you spend that LEAST contribute to your happiness and MOST contribute to your happiness. I.E. - it's not wasteful if the spending improves your quality of life - versus you're just spending to spend! The workbook section asks you to guess how much you spend on things each month and then actually track your spending for 6 months to help you develop a realistic budget & see how you did. It's definitely a wake-up call to people like me, who seemed to piddle their money away without realizing exactly where it's going. This exercise helps you find the answer to that question!
Fun!.......2003-06-27
This book has been a great step-by-step guide to getting financially organized. It's geared to average working-class folks, not aspiring accountants and brokers. The author's humorous approach makes the material accessible and interesting!
The book begins with steps to determine where your money goes, then works through ways to eliminate debt, plan for emergencies, and invest money for various purposes: retirement, college, and other large expenses. The book also includes advice for buying insurance and completing your taxes.
The book is a beginner's guide, not an exaustive reference -- so don't expect to find all the information you need if you want to invest in individual stocks or understand each line of your tax return. Rather, it gives clear advice to new investors through commonsense arguments that require almost no background information.
Only two minor complaints: First, health insurance is not discussed. Some advice on such an important kind of insurance would have been very helpful to me. Second, the authors repeatedly advertise their website.
(To their credit, the website Fool.com is a pretty good resource. You might want to try it before you get the book or even instead of the book. It has free trial membership as of this writing.)

Tables and worksheets are included.

Helpful Guide.......2004-05-04
This book is for people who need to know things about wills, living wills, insurance benefits, powers of attorney, etc. This is not a book about how to budget groceries, merge checking accounts, or move in with somebody that you will probably not spend your life with. It is the nitty gritty financial stuff you need to know and plan on when you are in a lifelong partnership with another person. I found it very helpful and easy to use, and it offers practical advice for hammering out this often unpleasant business with your significant other.
not worth the read.......2004-04-13
Even though it took only a few hours to read (very thin book), "The Motley Fool's Guide to Couples and Cash: How to Handle Money with Your Honey" was a waste of time. I would've liked to see more substance, but I didn't find it. I understand that most couples in America don't discuss finances before or even after getting married, but all of the concepts in the book are simple and basic. I think it's good that the book encourages the reader to be honest with you and your spouse as far as finances are concerned, but it is such common sense, that you're better off reading more content rich books from David Bach (Smart Couples Finish Rich) or Susie Orman (9 Steps to Financial Freedom).
Great Advice for Couples.......2003-07-31
People never talk about money and when they do it is always with a ton of 1/2 truths. This book gave me the courage to get started and helped my husband and I have productive and painless money conversations. Now we know what is really going on with our lives, what we can afford to spend today and what we need to invest (and where) for tomorrow.
And the best thing is -- it wasn't all bad news. This book helped us realize that we are doing a lot of things the right way and that we shouldn't be scared to talk about our finances with each other. Thanks Motley Fool for helping us get started on the right foot after nearly 10 years of marriage.
what kind of fool am I?.......2003-05-27
I feel a fool to have been misled into purchasing this book. I'm planning on moving in with my boyfriend for cohabitation. I was hoping for info on how to share our life together financially. NO WHERE in the book could I find anything about signing rental agreements or mortgage papers, a pre-nup-type form for living together and sharing expenses, ways to save together, what to do if one is working and the other is attending school, etc. It should mention that different states have varying legal aspects of co-habitation or marriage (automatic 1/2 salary after split-up after one year living together as man and wife). This book only had one small paragraph on buying a home together, and is continuously referring you to go to their webpages. Now be aware, I haven't read the book: I have tried their table of contents, and slowly flipped thru the pages to see what was in the book.
A Painless Way to Get Your Financial House in Order.......2003-03-29
Who wants to read financial advice? I often don't, as it can be dreadfully boring. But not this book! It's breezy and funny and yet offers critically important information. It's also full of anecdotes and examples from real-life couples who are addressing the financial issues in their lives. The book clocks in at less than 150 pages, so it shouldn't intimidate anyone, and it includes an extensive section of handy worksheets at the end, too. Relationships should only grow stronger, when the folks involved aren't nervously ignoring their finances, worried about how they'll pay for their kids' educations and their own golden years. I'm glad I got this book.

This book only has common sense ideas in it. I generally like the motley fools products. However, this book should be purchased only by those who do not have a basic understanding of how to save or prepare for college. We all know it is best to start saving early and talk to people at the schools about how to get a scholarship.
Who Knew School Could be So Affordable?.......2003-03-29
This book tackles a daunting financial topic and makes it easy to digest. Best of all, it's only 125 pages, so I didn't have to commit hours and hours of my time to learn what I needed to know. The book offered charts, tables and plain English, distilling topics such as the Education IRA (now called the Coverdell ESA), 529 Plans (there are two main kinds of these and you can sock away up to $100,000 or more in them -- who knew??) and even paying for elementary school and grad school. Oh -- and did I mention that it's funny, too?

You don't have to be foolish about money anymore........2003-02-28

Here's my money guide..........2002-06-18
Don't buy this book and save yourself (the money). It's all common sense stuff in here, you won't learn anything new.
Giving this book shows you care........2002-01-25
I ordered this book for my wife. She had tons of "why?" or "how?" or "what's that?" questions that I briefly knew the answer to. This book enabled me to not only point to a one or two paragraph answer to questions such as, "what is a P/E ratio?" but also to get a better grasp on my own finances and wealth management.
This book has since been lent to friends and family. When people learn that I have a passing knowledge about finances and investing, I'm usually inundated with questions. People naturally want to improve their lot in life. And knowledge of the subject is the first step in improvement. I find that this book helps refresh my thoughts on investing, and also is a great tool in helping others.
The book is broken into easy to read divisions. It allows for easy reading of the book when those areas of life come up, e.g. buying a house for us a few months ago. As your world of investing evolves and broadens, so will your reading in this book. It has everything for the beginner and also experienced investor.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to know about stocks, bonds, mutual funds, buying a car, buying a house, or how to budget for a family. Five stars!!
A perfect gift.......2001-06-15
My sister gave me this book after I started getting "serious" about my own finances in my late 20's. I sort of figured that most of this book wouldn't apply to me, but after just 20 pages I already understood why I needed to start saving more, pay off my credit cards, and spend less on insurance. The language is very easy to read. I definitely recommend this book!
Splendid - one of the best of its kind.......2001-04-24
Anybody who doesn't know how cynical I am about the capital markets need only read one of my own (fiction) books, but even I was taken with this terrifically readable guide to investing. Clear, concise and entertaining, but best of all, it has just enough tongue-in-cheek edginess to let you know Maranjian doesn't get high on her own supply: she has a solid grasp on where reality ends and the self-interested hype of Wall Street begins. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Book Description
With the rules often conflicting and confusing, and even the IRS offering disclaimers about the validity of its advice, it's no wonder that so many people are terrified of taxes. This annually revised guide, now in its fourth year, makes simple sense of this complex area. Experts Roy Lewis and Selena Maranjian have included all the recent tax law changes as well as assembled a wealth of tips for managing not only the yearly chore of tax filing but also day-to-day activities that have tax implications. Included is sound advice on investment-related tax issues; the 2001 tax cut; and how to maximize tax savings opportunities that come with marriage, children, education, retirement, buying a home, and running a home office. A tax calendar and resource section help readers plan for April 15 all year round.
