A book to be read more than once.......2007-09-18

I have just finished reading "The Cost of Discipleship" for the third time. It seems I pick it up about once a decade. I found it as convicting this last time as I did the first time. If Bonhoeffer wrote this in the midst of a church culture that was making room for the rise of Nazism, it makes one wonder what lies ahead for our own culture. In an age in which so-called Christianity has grown progressively more self-centered - from the prosperity gospel to the free grace movement which requires no change in the individual - "The Cost of Discipleship" is a book that should be revisited often and thoroughly digested upon each visit.

Hearty Spiritual Nourishment That Will Satisfy Your Soul. .......2007-09-02

There are not too many works that you can say, with the obvious exception of the Bible, that provide hearty spiritual nourishment that will satisfy your soul.

The Cost of Discipleship is one of those rare works of classical Christian writing that points the reader to what it means to be a true follower of Christ. I use the word "true" because in today's modern church the false doctines of "decisionism" and/or "acceptionism" have taken hold; meaning one "makes a decision to accept Jesus" or one "accepts Christ." But "from the beginning it was not so." Both Jesus and John the Baptist preached a doctrine of repentance.

This remarkable young Lutheran Pastor who was martyred during World War II makes a compelling statement of what the difference is between the "cheap grace" that is all too prevalent in so-called christendom and true Bible-based "costly-Grace." Bonhoeffer uses the term "costly" because Jesus Himself demands our all; "If any man will follow me, let him deny himself daily and follow me."

If you are looking for something that will nourish you to the very depths of your soul; if you are tired of the hype, the fluff, and the non-sense of today's seeker friendly gospel, then I urge you to get this book today and begin your quest to "earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered to the saints." You will not be sorry as Jesus more than satifies the hungry soul.

In a day and age, especially in America but even now around the globe, when elements of the church are preaching a prosperity gospel of "health and wealth," Bonhoeffer's Cost of Discipleship serves as an excellent challenge, a warning and an encouragment all within this book.
Bonhoeffer challenges the church to not be contented in merely dispensing religious and spiritual activities as if it were handing out candy at a fair or carnival. Bonhoeffer warns against the type of preaching and teaching that is lukewarm and calls for no sacrifice or commitment. Bonhoeffer's words also serve as an encouragement to those within the church that are paying a price for their faith.
Interestingly, Bonhoeffer acknowledges that there will be an inequality in terms of the cost - for some it may mean even death, for others it may mean something less, but regardless, each one is asked to bear the cost that God gives them.
If the Christian life is a social network for you. If the Christian life is an obligation or tradition for you. If the Christian life is just the latest and greatest thing in your quest for spirtuality. Then, I would strongly warn you against reading this book because you will be struck with conviction. Each person that has read this book that I have known have seen dramatic change in the way they think, feel, experience, and live the Christian life...so be warned!

Bonhoeffer tells it like it is........2007-05-21

In a time when we are constantly bombarded with the idea that being a Christian means telling others how to live and living warrior ideals for our beliefs, a true hero of the Christian faith shows us that it's not that easy. Living for Christ means really loving our neighbors, and we don't get to say that those bad folks aren't our neighbors.

This book is not easy to read. It's difficult, not just to take in (although you may sometimes need to read a paragraph two or three times to really comprehend its meaning), but to accept, because it's hard to imagine who can really live up to what Bonhoeffer shows us Christ is really asking of us. Nevertheless, I recommend making the effort in both areas.

These "Ologies" books are great! I even love to look at them. They're crammed full of interesting information and all the little pull out items and 3D trinkets are really cool and engaging. These books keep my kids occupied for good periods of time, and they'll go back and look at them again and again.

If the saying "don't judge a book by its cover" is true for 90% of books out there, then Wizardology falls into the other 10%. Captivating from first sight and not letting up all the way to the end, this book is just right on so many levels. Consider:

1. Its rich graphics are anything but boring. Elaborate designs, drawings, old-style text font, and drawings make every page rich and colorful.
2. Almost every page has something to touch, pull, or feel. This book engages the kinesthetic learner very well.
3. The author clearly knows what kids like. Wizards, dragons, magic, spells--they're all here.
4. Topics for discussion are everywhere. What does it mean to say yes to Magic and no to Science? Can animals communicate with us in ways we can understand? That's just the tip of the iceberg.

The one caution is that this book contains a lot of big words. However, in my experience, children are so engaged by everything else going on that they really don't stumble over them. Even so, I'd recommend this to about the 4th grade and up. Younger kids might get confused and overwhelmed, which would be a loss, because the actual text is arguably Wizardology's strongest attribute. Also, as some have said, I wouldn't worry about this book convincing kids to start casting spells everywhere or actually believing that Science isn't a good thing. The book's style is clearly presented as fiction, and young people quickly pick up on this.

All in all, I highly recommend this book for the upper elementary student, whether you're a parent, tutor, teacher, or a kid yourself. And it's pretty fun for adults as well.

Did events and eras such as the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, the Roman Empire , the Dark Ages, and the Renaissance, actually occur within a very different chronology from what we've been told? Yes, they certainly did!

The history of humankind is both drastically shorter and dramatically different than generally presumed.

Why is it so? On one hand, it was usual custom to justify the claims to title and land by age and ancestry, and on the other the court historians knew only too well how to please their masters. The so called universal classic world history is a pack of intricate lies for all events prior to the 16th century. World history as we learn it today was entirely fabricated in the 16th-18th centuries. It's likely that nobody told you before, but

there is not a single piece of firm written evidence or artefact that is reliably and independently dated prior to the 11th century.

Naturally, after what you've learned in school and university, you will not easily believe that the classical history of ancient Rome, Greece, Asia, Egypt, China, Japan, India, etc., is manifestly false.

You will point accusing finger to the pyramids in Egypt, to the Coliseum in Rome and Great Wall of China etc., and claim, aren't they really ancient, thousands of years ancient? Well, there is no valid scientific proof that they are older than 1000 years!

The oldest original written document that can be reliably dated belongs to the 11th century!

New research asserts that Homo sapiens invented writing (including hieroglyphics) only 1000 years ago. Once invented, writing skills were immediately and irreversibly put to the use of ruling powers and science.

The consensual chronology we live with was essentially crafted in the 16th century by the Jesuits.

The world history was compiled from contradictory mix of innumerable copies of ancient Latin and Greek manuscripts and other irrefutable proofs delivered by late mediaeval astronomers that were cemented by the authority of writings of the Church Fathers.

Early in life, we learn about ancient history. Children love the magical lessons of history - they are like fairy tales. Teachers recite breathtaking stories; very soon We learn by heart the names and deeds of brave warriors, wise philosophers, fabulous pharaohs, cunning high priests and greedy scribes.

We learn of gigantic pyramids and sinister castles, kings and queens, dukes and barons, powerful heroes and beautiful ladies, emaciated saints and low-life traitors.

Ancient history is based documents, manuscripts, printed books, paintings, monuments and artefacts - called primary sources.

The problem is that neither these ancient documents, nor events described therein can be irrefutably dated, moreover they contradict each other for the most part.

When a school textbook tells us that Genghis Khan in year X or Alexander in year Y, have each conquered half of the world, it means only that it is so said in some of the written sources.

There are no answers to simple questions:

When were these primary sources written?

Where and by whom were these sources found?

It is wrongly presumed that ancient and medieval chronicles, written by Genghis Khan's or Alexander the Great contemporaries and eyewitnesses, are readily available. Actually, only sources written hundreds or even thousands of years after the events are there, compiled mostly in the 16th 18th centuries, or even later.

As a rule, these sources suffered considerable multiple manipulations, falsifications and distortions by editing. At the same time,

innumerable originals of ancient documents under various pretexts were destroyed in Europe under various pretexts.

The names of persons and geographical sites often changed meaning and location during the course of the centuries.

Geographical locations became clearly defined on maps only with the advent of printing.

This made possible the circulation of identical copies of the same map for purposes of the military, navigation, education and governance tasks.

Historians from Oxford say: "hey, everybody knows that Julius Caesar lived in the first century B.C.

`Julius Caesar' statement is only a point of view as

there is simply no irrefutable documentary proof that Julius Caesar or any other great name of antiquity ever existed.

Better than that - extremely rare sources that can be reliably dated back to the 10th-14th centuries A D, do not show the polished picture of classical history.

They show a picture both contradictory and confusing.

All methods of dating of ancient sources and artefacts are erroneous:

Radio-carbon C14 method produces dating with exactitude of plus minus 1500 years, therefore it is too crude for dating of events in historical timeframe!

The Almagest tractate, which lies as corner stone contemporary chronology, compiled in the 2nd century A D by Ptolemy, the founding father of astronomy, contains astronomical data of 9th to 16th century!

The Bronze Age,that has supposedly began 5000 years ago. Bronze is made of 90% copper and 10% tin, but the technology for tin extraction dates back to 14th century A D!.

All eclipses contained in manuscripts, like Thucydides one, relating 'ancient' events have exclusively medieval dating. All horoscopes cut in stone or painted in Egyptian temples, like Dendera have exclusively early medieval dating solutions.

Not quite what you have learned in school? Open your eyes, and, you will find sufficient proof to reach step by step the inevitable conclusion that the classical chronology is false and therefore, that the history of ancient and medieval world universally accepted today, is also false. Have a fresh outlook on everything said or printed about "ancient" and "enigmatic" Roman, Greek and Egyptian, medieval as well as all other "lost and found" civilizations.

Antiquity and Dark Ages are phantoms invented in the 16th 18th and polished in 19th 20thcenturies. Human civilization is in fact barely 1000 years old!

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

The writing is rich and deep yet very simple to read and digest. I wish I would have read this years ago. There are gems on every page and I cant wait to get back into the book. I will be buying this book for both my kids and their spouses and using what I learn in my mentoring.

"A Reslient Life" Offers Hope and Something to Aim For.......2005-12-02

Gordon MacDonald, a sixty-something pastor, offers a lifetime of wisdom in "A Resilient Life." Freely admitting that he was born with a "quitters gene," he credits the influence of his high school cross-country and track coach with helping him onto the road of resilience. MacDonald defines "resilience" as the "toughened condition of both the body and the mind" and goes on to describe many characteristics of a resilient person.

Perhaps most importantly, MacDonald offers hope. He is a firm believer that the second half of life is when God often has people make their greatest contributions, and that we are called to serve well into our senior years. Even if one's life to date has been less than ideal, "the Christian worships a God who can (and does) take the life of any person, turn it inside out, and use it to build a piece of His kingdom."

MacDonald emphasizes that building resilience is a daily pursuit. It requires a regular self-assessment, the discipline of spiritual pursuits, and making the most of one's talents. It also takes place within whatever stage of life we find ourselves in at the moment. One of the most valuable sections of "A Resilient Life" is Chapter Seven: "Resilient People Foresee the Great Questions of Life's Passage." MacDonald interviewed several senior citizens (including people older than himself) to get a full picture of the big questions of life at each age. He comes up with a fairly comprehensive list. These questions shape our lives and the answers we come up with help make us who we are at every stage.

Another important chapter is Chapter 9: "Resilient People Listen for a Call from God." A call "is an acknowledgment that one is accountable to God for the discharge of his life's duties." God calls each of us to fulfill our role in His plan. He gives us the tools we need to make our own particular contribution to the world. It can be difficult to know what God is asking of us, but when we are on that right road, it will generally be confirmed by others. There are also the results. When I first read this book, I was exhausted and decipated. No matter how important my goals were, I simply wanted to drop everything and jump on a boat to a nomad island.
But this book taught me an important word. RESILIENCE! How foolish I was to think that these times of difficulty are reasons for me to give up~!
Now I know that difficulty is an opportunity for me to reach a new height~! I will now run forward, instead of walking, to make sure that I am resilient enough to be all that I am made to be in Christ our Lord.

Gordon MacDonald does it again with his latest "A Resilient Life". The heart of the book is the powerful chapter on practicing repentance followed by many practical insights on staying in the faith race over the long haul. MacDonald writes as a guy who has been there -- a pastor once fallen - now restored. The power of his words is intensified by the witness of MacDonald's life. God used this book to speak powerfully to me -- what more can I say? Highly recommended.

This is one of my favourite books.

Interesting life of one intelligent person with atypical sense of humour with interesting style of thinking.

Long part about physics may be boring for some kinds of people, but it still also contain a lot of interesting to read. Either way if you are absolutely out of physics you will maybe close this book on first sites of the second part.

So Much Wisdom in A Small Book .......2007-05-20

As others have noted this is the perfect companion to Reflections...... which I listened to on a long road trip. However this book needs to be read and the content savored while Reflections is more entertainment.

The Challenger investigation shines light on all that is wrong with Washington and the good people who perform despite the system. The book is worth reading if for only these chapters. These chapters are also must reading for anyone who read the 9/11 report and either believes it or completely distrusts it. Sadly the Washington insiders are masters at controlling independent panels from the Kennedy investigation to the most recent policical investigations. The term independent panel simply does not exist in DC. Sadly too many on the Challenger panel were working hard to protect that which most needed to be fixed. I believe the same truth holds true with the 9-11 investigation where the "scope" was carefully crafted to avoid potholes.

What's refreshing is Feynman's refusal to go along and also the coaching he received from the USAF general along the way.

Non technical, the book is suitable for interested readers from 10-100. Great illustration of how much positive impact can come from one great mind.

I love Feynman.......2007-05-04

Although this isn't quite the same as "Surely you Must be Joking, Mr Feynman", this is still a great read. There's a great account of his involvement in the investigation of the Challenger accident. If you liked the "Surely you Must be Joking" this one is well worth it. Feynman is such a compelling guy, that (along with Douglas Adams) when reading his books I actually get bummed out that they're not still around and contributing to society.

Further travels with Dick Feynman.......2007-05-02

What Do You Care What Other People Think? is sort of a sequel to Surely You're Joking Mr Feynman. As a whole this book is not as good as Surely You're Joking Mr Feynman. Part 1 of What Do You Care What Other People Think? is excellent and is very similar in tone and content to the earlier book in that it contains anecdotes of Feynman's youth, travels, and work at Los Alamos, and a touching account of the untimely death of his first wife Arlene. I recommend it highly (with only one qualm, see below).

Part 2 is an account of Feynman's work investigating the space shuttle Challenger disaster. This part contains some interesting material but it seemed incomplete, technical in odd ways, and I found it hard to follow--actually impossible to understand fully.

Feynman's epilogue on the value of science is simple-minded, and IMO unworthy of publication.

Let me repeat: Part 1 is fascinating and is a valuable supplement to Surely You're Joking Mr Feynman, but one thing that bothered me is Feynman's hostile attitude to philosophy. Here is a particularly annoying example: Feynman is discussing how he helped Arlene with her philosophy homework. Feynman attacks Descartes' proof for the existence of God. Feynman has Descartes' argument summarized fairly accurately and gives one of the standard refutations (offered as his own brilliant idea). All of this is sophomoric, literally, in that it is standard fare in intro to philosophy courses, but Feynman presents it as though he is this daring iconoclast, uprooting the stuffy philosophers. I quote: "Arlene understood me. She understood, when she looked at it, that no matter how impressive and important this philosophy stuff was supposed to be, it could be taken lightly--you could just think about the words, instead of worrying about the fact that Descartes said it." (p. 29)

Of course this is just what philosophers teach in intro to philosophy. This is philosophy! Take nothing for granted, question everything, "The unexamined life is not worth living" (Socrates). Feynman is a brilliant physicist and wonderful story teller, and he's had a wild life, but his attitude to philosophy is uneducated and uninformed. Feynman especially should appreciate our philosophical heritage. One of Feynman's valuable contributions is that he has been something of a gadfly in the spirit of Socrates, the founder of philosophy in the Western tradition.

Finally I find the title annoying. Of course you care what other people think, and so do I and so did Feynman. Why else would he relate his anecdotes, tell us the story of the death of Arlene, and so on? Indeed, Feynman strikes me as quite sensitive and concerned about other people and their thoughts.

This was my first introduction to Richard Feynman, and it left an indelible impression. The book consists of a collection of essays, ranging from his upbringing, loss of his first wife, a few anecdotes, and even an in depth look at the Challenger disaster. Among other things, Feynman is a great writer, and makes each of these subjects a captivating read. He has a brilliant mind, and an intriguing vantage point for every subject. If you ever wondered what makes some men stand out from the rest, this is a perfect book to read.

I bought this book and the complete guide for the entire saga. I was more impressed with this book than the other. This book was missing atleast the one character I was looking for Niem (Sullustan) that flew the Falcon with Lando in 6. So I looked him up on the internet and found his info readily availble on some star wars website. I was hoping that they would atleast list the name and race for ever character shown, but they don't.

This was one of my very first Star Wars books and I half credit it with my burgeoning interest in the expanded Star Wars universe.

You'd expect this to be a joke, but Kyriazi takes his Bond very seriously. This is an amazing book, one that gets you excited just thinking of all the possibilities that the techniques could open up for you. Highly recommended!

I'm not Bond, but I'm improving........2007-03-09

Kyrazi's Bond seminar book offers a lot of good, practical advice that, upon first glance, seems like a no-brainer. But just the fact that one has purchased this book shows that he or she is motivated to improve his or her lifestyle, and the advice offered in this title becomes more realistic and attainable than it was before with that first step.
Although the text is not the great American novel by any stretch of the imagination, and I would go so far as to say that it is poorly written as far as books are concerned, this is not the point of the book; nor is it the point of the book to turn someone into James Bond or even to get someone to accomplish all of the things suggested therein (you have to be able to pick and choose things that are relevant to your life, personally, as we are all unique individuals). The book is, however, meant to help someone achieve his or her maximum potential as a unique human being, and this is what Paul Kyriazi does extremely well in the book. I have seen immediate results, and I haven't looked back since. The only place to go is up.

Bond by osmosis.......2007-01-22

I hadn't expected a curious thing that happened while reading "The Complete James Bond Lifestyle Seminar" book: I was already doing a lot of what I found there. But I'm in my early 40's and I've been watching and rewatching the Bond films for most of my conscious life (I'm currently rereading all of the novels and just finished Andrew Lycett's wonderful bio of Ian Fleming), so it stands to reason that something had to rub off.

But if you're in your 20's or 30's, I'm sure you'll pick up a lot of very helpful tips about the style of your new cool life. The author doesn't limit his seminar to 007 but also includes very cool and swingin' insights from Bond's American cousins--Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack.

I have to disagree with the author on page 217. He writes, "I've never seen Bond running out the door yelling, 'I'm late. I'll never make it.'" The section is called "Be Early." Good advice. And it's true that we've never seen Bond rush out late...but that doesn't mean he's always on time either. In THUNDERBALL, M chides him in front of the other double-O's with, "Now that we're all here!" And how many films have shown a flustered Moneypenny trying to track him down?
He might be late once in a while...he just doesn't get excited about it, even if the world hangs in the balance.

But that's a quibble, along with typos and the first half of the book mentioning "Blowfeld" instead of "Blofeld" (it's corrected in the second half).

So with tongue firmly planted in cheek and open to improving your coolness, you'll have a good time reading through this seminar for tips. I did.

Starting a New Lifestyle.......2007-01-16

Fantastic read, Paul Kyriazi has something to offer everyone. I must admit, that I did not expect as much from this seminar as I recieved. This seminar serves as a road map to success, for the young man just starting out, or the older man preparing for a fresh new start. Insightful and witty, can't wait for the cd collection.

This is an extraordinary book. It has both explanations of the virtues and suggestions about how to incorporate them into a person's life. The tone is personal. It seems like the author is talking directly and easily with the reader.

Groeschel does not disappoint, if you are an avid fan or a first time reader, this text will present very realistic situations for an expansion of spiritual growth and provide attainable options. The chapters are concise and this is a book one could space out over time or read in a full setting.
Groeschel once again challenges the reader to lead a more fully Christian life and uses his psychological background at times to relate to what frustrates and beseiges the modern day person searching for a closer realtionship to God. Excellent as a retreat companion or a Lenten guide without gloss or heavy duty theological phrasing.

Not bad but a play on the title of another popular author.......2007-01-04

This was not a bad book and it did give some pratical advice on living a virtous life. I do think that Father Groeschel needs to define his comments a little more due to the fact that he is misinterpreted frequently. Also one other criticism is that I wish the title was something a little different. When I heard the title I automatically thought that this was by Evangelical Pastor Rick Warren. I can't help but think that Father Groeschel used this title due to the fact of the immense popularity of the "Purpose Driven
Life."

A Real Page Turner.......2006-10-25

I'm a long time fan of Father Benedict Groeschel, going back to his Capuchin days and this latest book is pure Father Benedict. As you might expect his look at the virtues isn't a rote rendering of them but a challenging and incredibly entertaining read. I found myself unable to put the book down.
A great overview of the virtues--will please all of Father Benedict's fans as well as those who are just coming to know of him.

Best advise for Boys and Men besides the Bible.......2007-05-06

This book and His other,Boyhood and Beyond, are what this nation of ours needs. Since our nation changed from an agricultural, rural, family farm comunity, to a fast food inter-city one, children have had little or no responsibility around the home/farm. Learning how to joyfully accept responsiblity, respect other people and get along in the family and workplace is what this book is about. Fathers need to read this book because many of them have never learned to put up the "toys" and start being a loving provider for their families. Many grown men need to stop being boys and take their place in society, being peacemakers and profitable assets to the community. These two books are written by a MAN that GOD has helped to be just what I am describing. If you want to remain lazy and unprofitable to your family, don't read this. Excellent guidance for boys -- and the rest of us........2007-02-05

Bob Schultz has done it again. Just as in his earlier book, Boyhood and Beyond, this book is full of short lessons taught with fitting and interesting stories from his own life. We've been using these books for family study, and we're all (male and female) getting a lot out of them. Bob Schultz writes as a humble, hard-working Christian who's using the special talents God gave him, including excellent writing skills. and his books inspire us all to seek to serve the Lord in the way we conduct our lives and businesses. This is one of the best devotionals for families I've come across, and I've been suggesting it to friends who have sons from the upper elementary years and up. For those with only younger children, I'd recommend "Our 24 Family Ways, by Clay Clarkson.

Antidote for laziness.......2006-12-21

One of the best things my father gave me was a work ethic. I want my kids to have it too. A good work ethic will give them choices in life and make them a pleasure to employ. Bob Schultz gives us 35 short chapters that each contain lessons in bringing out the joy and value of work.

I read Created for Work out loud to my 11 year old son. My 14 year old daughter didn't want to miss out, so she joined us. They both loved it and even requested readings on days when time was short. A book about work that an 11 and 14 year old liked? Yes. It was good for me too. Even with a work ethic, I struggle with laziness and Schultz provides the antidote. Though it's geared toward young men, all could benefit from this biblically based guide to work.

This book has been a tremendous blessing to our family and an encouragement for each one of us to work harder and with more joy in the task. I highly recommend it for the whole family!! We have somewhere lost the motivation to work-that being, bringing glory to God, taking care of what He has given us and knowing that a job worth doing is worth doing well. The author uses every day simple stories to bring forth some long needed truths to the areas of work. The author dispels many of today's common thinking patterns concerning work, such as laziness, slothfulness, greediness and half-heartedness. Instead he motivates us to reach for the greater good of a job well done. I highly recommend this book to families who wish to encourage their children (and themselves) to what the true purposes of work are.
