5 out of 5 stars PRIVACY CRISIS is an exceptional privacy reference tool. A must read for 2007........2007-04-12

PRIVACY CRISIS was written by an author who has proved that through diligence, effort and a working knowledge of the system, one can have privacy in their life.

Grant Hall has opened new doors for those of us who previously believed that the road to financial privacy must be traveled by transferring assets to offshore 'havens' in an attempt to control our assets. In fact, Hall uses business resources that cater to the privacy seeker combined with knowledge of the financial system and negotiating skills to keep bank and brokerage funds hidden from those who may want to find them. Hall recommends using a company that rents safe deposit boxes without identification, tax i.d. or Social Security numbers-not even a name for those who want total secrecy. There's examples of cashing checks that leave no trail to the payee. Hold assets and property in total secrecy. These methods were eye openers for me.

I liken this book to an information enemy to the powers that want to control freedom loving Americans. Those who choose to become invisible to identity thieves, stalkers, private eyes can do it by practicing Hall's principles in PRIVACY CRISIS.

This is the best book on the subject I have read and I highly recommend it to those who desire personal privacy.

5 out of 5 stars PRIVACY CRISIS provides information on banking secrecy in the U.S.A........2007-03-22

I have completed Privacy Crisis and this book answered many questions about privacy and the challenges we face today.

Grant Hall has covered all of the important money privacy issues and it is possible to make your assets and money disappear through the application of the principles outlined in the book. And this can be done in the U.S.A. What a break from the other authors who guide readers toward offshore banks and advise giving control to others.

I appreciate the attention to detail. Obviously, Hall has walked where other privacy writers have never gone. I would highly recommend this book to those who fear their bank accounts will be stolen or seized by government agencies or others. Thorough, complete and worth the money many times over, Privacy Crisis will become a big deal in the arena of Privacy Reference books.

This book may be the greatest investment a person could make to escape the threats of stalkers, identity thieves or others who wish you harm.
Buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Worth a Hundred Times the Price.......2007-03-02

Personal privacy is under siege these days. Mine was first invaded when cyber-crooks drained my checking account in a single day. If you don't take steps to protect yours, it too will go up in smoke. For you, maybe it's when an obsessed former spouse or fan starts stalking you. Or the government--claiming "national security"--begins wiretapping your phone. Maybe it's when your employer snoops on all your emails, a gumshoe rifles through your credit files, or you have to supply your most personal information just to open a checking account or buy a home.

You don't have to give up your God-given privacy. Believe me, this book will tell you everything you'll ever need to know about how to protect it--whether in just one area, or an entirely anonymous lifestyle. This author knows his stuff. He's practiced everything he writes about. So his book is far in advance of other privacy books that just recycle armchair theories or even worse, suggest you do things that are outright illegal.

Protect your identity. Protect the privacy of your home and business transactions--your computer, phone, mail, travel, bank account, stored items, credit files, hard assets, and investments. One invasion of your privacy will cost you ten or a hundred times the price of this one-of-a-kind book.

I wish I'd known about it before they emptied my bank account.

5 out of 5 stars A timely guide to preventing stalking and identity theft.......2007-01-26

During this era of skyrocketing identity theft crimes, violence and death to innocent victims by stalkers, and government's tracking and monitoring of citizens' business, money and communication, Americans are seeking privacy for personal security and survival. Grant Hall writes on how to live an anonymous lifestyle in his new book, Privacy Crisis: Identity Theft Prevention Plan and Guide to Anonymous Living. And he should know. He used a non-traditional 'defense' to avoid a civil court case by disappearing for four years. A number of privacy tactics outlined in Privacy Crisis belong to Hall. I have never seen these in print-and I began reading privacy books prior to the publication of W.G. Hill's first PT book. Privacy Crisis may be the best book of its kind ever written.

According to Hall, privacy living is the answer to preventing identity theft. One can escape from a stalker or disappear-for any reason by using the information in Privacy Crisis. Alternate identification, renting and owning a home in secrecy, driving and working under the radar and establishing a clandestine communication and computer system are covered in detail. This book is thorough and complete and cites case histories and challenges the author of 'How to be Invisible' on the use of nominees.
Hall provides insight on anonymous banking, cashing checks privately, alternate name debit cards and provides a resource for obtaining a safe deposit box requiring no name or Social Security number. There's information on how to keep investments, property and businesses a secret. All of this can be accomplished in the U.S.A. of all places-a welcome change from the many books offering unrealistic, inconvenient, expensive, offshore remedies for domestic privacy problems.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-read for Privacy-conscious Americans!.......2007-01-14

It goes without saying that personal privacy is a rare commodity in America today. Identity theft has become the country's fastest growing crime. Con artists relentlessly target us while greedy lawyers and vengeful ex-spouses threaten to drain our bank accounts and assets. Our personal computers have become open doors into the most discreet corners of our lives. And that doesn't begin to address threats to our privacy from the government, eavesdropping employers, nosey snoops with hidden agendas, eavesdropping employers, and increasingly intrusive marketing-crazed companies.

Privacy Crisis is easily one of the best books on privacy ever written. Through his eye-opening inside perspective, as someone who evaded private investigators and attorneys for four years by living "below the radar," Grant Hall has brought us an authoritative how-to guide for the average American who wants to protect his or her privacy on an practical level. Far superior to the many theory-laden books on privacy, Privacy Crisis is a revealing step-by-step manual written by someone who has walked the walk. This book is required reading for anyone concerned about their personal and financial privacy in an ever-threatening society.

Book Description

Most people are unaware that environmental problems such as climate change can be easily avoided, at a profit, through the intelligent application of appropriate technology. The Carbon Buster's Handbook describes how to achieve this goal in the residential field.

The first book in North America to provide a detailed carbon accounting of a family's carbon emissions and how to reduce them, it systematically analyzes energy costs and evaluates which measures yield the highest returns for the environment and the pocketbook. It provides answers to questions such as:

The book allows individuals to quickly and accurately assess which products are a good deal and which aren't. It systematically analyzes residential carbon emissions and energy costs and prioritizes solutions based on highest carbon reductions and monetary returns, yielding results that are often surprising. The book enables readers to dramatically reduce their carbon emissions - far below the levels targeted under the Kyoto Protocol. At the same time, readers implementing the recommendations will save an average of US$15,000 in energy costs over the next five years.

5 out of 5 stars This little book lives up to its name!.......2007-05-12

The positivism inherent in the title (The Carbon-buster's Home Energy Handbook) carries through to the text and tables which are dramatically informative and easily understood. Mr. Stoyke has done our planet an enormous service by showing the rest of us how to be kinder to our unique home. This book should be read by every home-owner and potential car-buyer.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptionally useful book if you want to save money and do right for the planet.......2007-03-04

This winter's storms made me realize how quickly global warming's impact is escalating. We need common solutions but we also need to do what's right as individuals. What's great about this book is that it walks us through the process and even allows us to save money in the process. Just a handful of the book's simple and almost costless suggestions will save me several hundred dollars a year. And it gives a great perspective on which of the larger investments to undertake, and how they pay back in both dollars and carbon savings. I've already recommended this book to a dozen friends and will be recommending it to more.

It's the best handbook I know for immediate practical steps that any of us can take to save energy.

5 out of 5 stars Essential and Profitable Reading.......2007-02-16

Godo Stoyke is a true master of bringing carbon reduction strategies into the hands of the everyday person. Backed by rigorous research, each suggestion in the book is worthy of consideration and completely achievable. Most professionals within the "green" technology industry are aware that market appeal lies in the wallet; to this effect, Mr. Stoyke has infused the book with money-saving tips that provide significant returns. Such an appeal will lead to implementable steps at reducing one's carbon footprint whilst being rewarded economically for sound decision making.

Due to this implementable nature, the book will appeal greatly to a wide audience, from the environmentally-aware to the fiscally-conservative.

Checking up on Carbon Busters (the research organization which Mr. Stoyke is a partner in) it is clear that professional accuracy is well within their means. I take heart in this, due to the wide proliferation of relatively ballooned perspectives that plague the enviro-informational space.

Bush's energy bill should make this book required reading! How many tons of carbon reduction per person would that initiate?! Likely enough to pull tanks out of the Middle East.

To the author: Well done sir.

The little old lady who knows all about fixing cars, Treganowan is the Martha Stewart of auto repair. She went into the auto-shop business in the sixties, became a popular success and went on to develop a cable TV show on car mechanics for those who are not mechanically-minded. (Co-author Catanzarite is the producer of the TV show.) Now she has a huge audience for her non-technical, no-fuss advice on how to keep your car on the road. She resists the obvious temptation to indulge in down-home folksiness and manages to convey in clear simple language the basics of do-it-yourself auto maintenance and repair.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2003-05-14

I bought my first car and this book at the same time. I have had many car problems in the past few years and this book was the only thing that made conversations with a mechanic seem almost painless. Lucille's book helps to identify smells, fluids, sound and much more. Without this book I'd never know how or when to change fluids, what smells or sounds to be concerned with. What is safe and what is not...even if a job will be very expensive! A great book, maybe the most well used book I've ever bought.

4 out of 5 stars A great introduction.......2003-02-11

This was a great introduction for someone who knows very little about cars. She explains what the major systems of the car are (like the drive train, suspension, etc) and identifies key components (like the radiator and catalitic converter) and explains what they do in simple terms. My only complaint is that as someone who just bought a classic car and wants to really learn to be a weekend mechanic I wanted to know more about certain things and was frustrated by not being able to "double-click" to get more information about something she had described too generally. She really does explain things in an easy-to-understand and entertaining way and gives a great maintenance plan for the average car owner who wants to save money by doing it themselves or just know what mechanics are talking about so they don't get taken for a ride.

Lucille herself is quite inspiring - I'd like to know her! Stop by greasergrrls dot com if you like and say hi :)

5 out of 5 stars A great reference for mechanically challenged drivers........1999-06-05

This book is a valuable reference for all drivers who would like to understand how their cars work and how to talk to and understand a mechanic. It is well written and organized. I learned what many of those squeaks, clunks & chirps mean & how to do my own maintenance. I'm giving Lucille's to my neice for her 16th birthday.

3 out of 5 stars For better & worse, the only book on US Traveller clans.......2005-05-02

I wish that there was a well-crafted, even-handed investigation of the U.S. traveller families of Irish and Scottish descent who comprise the bulk of the material in this 400-plus page book. Cultural mores and anthropological insights are scattered about especially in the Murphys Village (Augusta, Georgia park noted as a center for clans) and the marriage chapters. But Wright's intent, weakened if more widely marketed for the non-scholarly reader by the ill-chosen, sensationalist blurbs that cheapen his book on the inside and back covers, is to expose what has been a long-established and little understood part of largely rural Americana to a larger public. To correct an earlier Amazon review or two, the Romani (Gypsies) are not kin to the traveller clans; this is a misnomer. Wright does show how the Roma differ from the travellers and that there is actually little crossover in the Irish and Scottish travellers he follows. This book is not ideal, but until others tidy up what Wright's rummaged, it is by default the place to start reading. (By the way, in 1997 an indie B-movie with Bill Pullman, Mark Wahlberg, and Julianne Margulies was made, Traveller; NBC Dateline around the same year profiled the Disney scam that begins Wright's book. Later, as other Amazon reviewers relate, the Toogood child abuse video incident sparked another brief span of less than approving attention by the media about US "Irish" travellers.)

In the meantime, Wright's take, that took 16 years and that he admits he left unfinished until the early 90s Disney World scam and the closure to the saga of Jimmy Burke (his primary informant) finds sensationalist focal points for what the author admits is a repetitive account of the scams perpetrated by the Northern and Southern Irish travellers upon bargain hunting trailer buyers, by pigeon drops involving the elderly, those wanting suspiciously cheap bargains for roofing and driveway sealing, and, as the author accurately points out, those "refs" or "country people" wanting something for next to nothing. Without those "refs" also willing to deal outside of the proper paperwork and business protections, an observer can agree that the travellers are only taking advantage of people who themselves participate in scams in which the "refs" are also eager to bypass the law in favor of a quick buck saved or stolen.

Wright was a correspondent for Trailer Life Magazine, so the bulk of the unfortunately if appropriately named Scam deals with the minutiae of trailer sale cons perpetrated with names, facts, and dates. He does protect his sources, and passes on only general details to others. A few hundred pages of the scams, expanded from his 1980s articles in that magazine, does provide I suppose helpful evidence for those needing to learn about how to avoid being ripped off, but the data grows tedious as it's endlessly repeated as the crimes keep on keeping on. He does claim to have documented here with all names and dates what became his obsession as he determined to delve into the traveller subcultures and find out from the victimizers and the victims both sides of the situation.

As a descendant of non-US, native Irish, travellers, I found Wright's book dispiriting in its rambling and uneven pace, which ironically befits a description of a group living always on the road and one step ahead of the authorities. Still, I must admit that I believe Wright's sincerity in exposing the frauds that do occur, and that he is not acting out of any prejudice against this American sub-culture in particular. He tells on pg. 8 at the start that he had been invited by the travellers themselves to be a witness to their set-ups, and then goes on to say that travellers claim that only a few bad apples spoil their otherwise honest activities. He states simply that he presents what he knows for the reader to decide.

1 out of 5 stars Scam! is a racist scam against Travellers.......2003-10-15

In addition to being incredibly poorly written, this book is misleading and racist. The Travelling people have been living in the traditional way for centuries in Ireland and yes, some have made their way to the States. Obviously, there are good and bad in every culture, but it seems that the writer of this book is trying to blame Travellers for every major scam in America. This is ridiculous. It is also insulting to the majority of the Travellers, who are law-abiding, respectable citizens who mind their own business. The book was obviously written with the explicit purpose of slanderizing the Irish Travellers, which is a shame. If the writer had done more research, as opposed to just cranking out a sensationalist tabloid essay, he would have found that a small minority of scams are carried out by Travellers, however, Travellers often get blamed for scams that they have no responsibility for .

1 out of 5 stars Interesting Info - Poorly Written.......2002-12-04

I found the actual information in the book to be interesting. Having no other information or experience with Travelers, I can neither support nor dispute the facts as the author presents them. That being stated, I found the actual writing of the book to be frustrating and overall awful!

I had several problems with the way the book was written -
      1. It did not appear to follow any logical pattern. The book felt like it was written in a stream of conscience style. It hop scotched around from topic to topic, year to year, and had no flow. It started and ended with the "Disney Scam" and kept referring back to it periodically throughout the first few chapters. The author would start a section with a phrase like, "Another favorite scam of the Travelers that year. . . " without ever identifying "that year". After reading it, I have an idea of the types of scams that the Travelers try, but absolutely no concept of the timeline that was involved.

      2. The author referred to himself as "the writer" throughout the entire book. It was a "cute" ploy when he described how he first got entangled with the Travelers, but once I figured out he was "the writer" it got pretty old and annoying.

      3. He carefully kept referring to his wife as, "the writer's wife" throughout the story, but at one point slipped when he was quoting a letter from Jimmy that said, "'I deeply appreciate both your and Pam's support . ..'"

      4. The writer couldn't keep his made up names straight. One paragraph he called the owner of an RV dealership Norman Roberts, the next paragraph the man's name was Norman Robbins and back to Roberts later in the chapter.

      5. He was listing the cities that were scam "hubs" so to speak, and he listed the same city twice within the same sentence (Minneapolis).

      6. There were two maps of the eastern United States labeled "trip 3" and "trip 4" in one chapter. Why? The entire book is about how these people would go from Kentucky to Florida to New York to Indiana to Oklahoma to South Carolina to . . .. The maps were completely out of place. It was kind of like seeing a china vase in the middle of a hardware store, "what's that doing here?"

Granted, some of my criticisms may seem petty. Get an editor! Proofread the book before sending it to the printer! I don't purport to be an English expert on grammar, but the errors and style of the book were extremely frustrating and distracting to the overall message that the author may have been trying to convey.

One nice thing about the ending of the book however is that he listed all of the main characters (and even most of the minor ones) and gave a short summary statement of "where they are now". It was nice to tie up some of the loose ends that were dangling from the actual narrative.

The author summed it up best when he wrote, "This book also could not be written until now because it lacked both a focal point and a conclusion." Perhaps he should have narrowed down his focal point and conclusion a little bit more.

      5 out of 5 stars Irish Travelers.......2002-09-29

Nothing about the child abuse case that occurred in the Mishawaka Kohl's parking lot has been simple. While the video is shocking and Madelyne Toogood has admitted she was wrong, new twists continue in the case.

Identity is complex issue for investigators
Part of the struggle for investigators is the society in which this family lives. The culture of the Irish Travelers has made the basic question of identity hard to answer. From the very beginning identity was an issue. When police first released the video they didn't release a name because they questioned the name they were given.

"It is typical for family members and for all the travelers to give false names. It is also typical for a traveler to take on another name or another identity of another family member," says Don Wright, an expert on Irish Travelers. "There could be ten different Johnny Toogoods out there," says Wright. He says that it is all part of the culture. That has made this investigation even tougher. John Toogood sat at the Mishawaka Police Department for hours while investigators checked his background, a check that involved several other names.

      Husband has many aliases
"I had a warrant," explains Detective Matt Austin of the Bristol, Tennessee Police Department. "Basically, the name was John Gannon, or A.K.A, James Gorman. I thought he looked or fit the description of Mr. Toogood,"says Detective Austin. While fingerprints cleared him of charges associated with that warrant, police believe John Toogood is the Johny Lark who plead guilty to felony theft in Philadelphia in 1998.

Spanish newspaper throws in a twist
Adrian Villalobos is a reporter for Voz Latinas
A new article on the identity of Madelyne and her daughter was recently published in the Voz Latina, a Spanish language newspaper published in Michiana. The reporter interviewed a man who says that the Madelyne and Martha Toogood we know are not the same mother and daughter in the video. "He says he's pretty much involved in a high level with the real mother of the girl," explains Adrian Villalobos, a reporter for Voz. "He says he knows where they are but he refuses to give me that information for now," explains Villalobos.

The premise behind a deception of this type would be that the daughter brought in to police earlier this week is different than the one shown in the video. That child would not have shown the signs of abuse that the child in the surveillance tape apparently sustained. It is a bizarre question of identity and at this point the prosecutor will only say that the investigation is ongoing. Obviously verifying the identity of individuals in question is part of the investigation.
While video-monster mom Madelyne Gorman Toogood visited her 4-year-old daughter yesterday, Indiana authorities were checking out a flurry of criminal complaints about her husband that they said will likely prevent the couple from regaining custody of the youngster.

"At least three states have been heard from," reported Randy DeCleene, spokesman for the St. Joseph County prosecutor's office in South Bend.

He said that following Toogood's arrest for the videotaped beating of her daughter, her husband Johnny's picture was flashed on TV screens and published in papers around the country.

And several people recognized him - some convinced he's a swindler who called himself John Lark, others insisting he's a con man who goes by the name John Gannon.

"It's all being investigated. It looks like he could have an extensive criminal background," said DeCleene.

Asked how that would affect the Toogoods' bid to regain custody of their daughter, he replied, "I would say it doesn't bode well . . . A criminal record is not considered to be positive for a child."

Little Martha was put in foster care on Saturday after her mother was charged with pummeling her in a Kohl's department-store parking lot in Mishawaka.

The Sept. 13 beating was caught on a store security camera and shown around the country. Images of her husband followed as the story gained worldwide attention.

The exposure led to complaints about Johnny Toogood from Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Virginia, according to DeCleene.

5 out of 5 stars Nice book--a bit long but..........2002-09-24

I haven't read this book, but in light of the recent shoplifting child-beating case and others, I think the adage "where there's smoke there's fire" applies.

At 488 pages, the book is a bit long, but I think it deserves a fair hearing.

I am giving it five stars to balance the other negative reviews.

Who is to know if the reviewers are not themselves Travelers, Hell's Angels, or worse?

America has a right to know.
