Book Description
Shelves full of business books have told women that the only way to win at work is to be like a guy. The truth is that science shows that the brains of men and women work differently. Here are proven techniques to maximize the intrinsic and instinctive strengths of women for the workplace.Despite steady advancement, part of the reason for women's continuing struggle for success is a very personal challenge: They feel uncomfortable doing anything that feels like self-promotion.That's why Ronna Lichtenberg, corporate veteran turned highly sought-after management consultant, built a program for women that works with their unique advantages.Starting with recent developments in brain sex research and moving through social stereotypes, Lichtenberg takes a fresh look at how women relate to work and shows them how to use their gifts to get what they want. The book includes easy-to-use tools, tips on managing communication styles, and exercises that have been honed in Lichtenberg's many workshops.Whether giving women pragmatic advice on what to do about that infuriating boss, how to know how much money they should be making (and how to get it), or how to follow up without feeling like a beggar or a stalker, Lichtenberg is real, and really funny at the same time. Her advice ushers in a new world of possibilities for women who are ready for a success that feels right.

Learning to promote, or "pitch", ME Inc. on and off the job.......2005-04-16
I found this book to be easy-to-read, informative, and interesting.
The author tells you the what, the why, and the how of specific elements of "pitching" and she includes colorful examples to make her point.
She clearly breaks down the process of "pitching" into key elements and describes how to maximize the effectiveness of each element while including the major concerns of the other party.
(If anyone has seen the movie "Working Girl" with Melanie Griffith and Sigourney Weaver, you know how much work Melanie puts into her "pitch" and about the conflict between the "pink" woman, Melanie, and the "blue" woman, Sigourney.
This book describes certain elements of that movie to a T!)
The book hit the nail on the head when it said that as a woman you could jeopardize your chances of success if you are too feminine or too masculine. (This is not immediately obvious in most professions, and I have found that this is quite a fine line to walk in and out of the workplace.) Adjusting your style to suit the comfort level of your audience and being able to attend to the verbal and nonverbal behaviors of your audience are also discussed in this book.
Anyone that has tried not to pitch like a girl, female or male, has learned that what may seem like a simple natural motion into a complicated series of motions of from a specific grip on the ball, flex the wrist, position the arm, rotating the shoulder, twisting at the waist, leaning back, and moving my weight to the front foot for the throw.
What women might think is an innate ability to throw a baseball, or "pitch", is a very specific sequence of motions carefully learned over and made to look effortless through practice and refinement.
Thank goodness that someone could break down the motions of promoting the best of my skills and qualities to another person, for explaining how we are "pitching" all the time in our lives and the importance being able to do it effectively, and for explaining how "blue" people, "pink" people, and people with "stripes" are different.
This book helped me assess my audience more accurately, make adjustments to my "pitch" to increase my effectiveness, and decrease my level of stress while "pitching"!
weLEAD Book Review from the Editor of leadingtoday.org.......2005-03-27
Pitch Like a Girl is a book that at first glance gives the impression of simply being a primer for females in the modern workplace. As a male reader, my initial reaction was there wouldn't be much in it for me. I was wrong! The author has done an excellent job of revealing the clear and significant differences between men and woman in the workplace. Modern culture perpetuates a silly myth that men and woman are equal in every way... they just have a few parts different in anatomical design. The plain truth as Ronnie Lichtenberg explains is that we are "wired differently". This does not make one sex better or superior than another. We are unique by design and react differently in various situations. Men and woman also approach problems and challenges from different perspectives. This is as it should be, and trying to be something you are not, or conforming to others' expectations only leads to frustration.
Pitch Like a Girl is a refreshing book because the author believes women in the workplace don't have to change who and what they really are to succeed. She believes the real secret to success is to tap "more fully and consciously into the woman you already are". Litchenberg proposes that the key to fulfillment is to bring more of yourself to work, and to receive more back from it. To promote this she encourages the reader to discover their own "pitch". The "pitch" may be different for each individual, but as a powerful tool it will help you to exercise your natural skills of persuasion to influence others toward your point of view. This is accomplished by developing the skill set most women have acquired by nurturing and building personal relationships.
I enjoyed reading Pitch Like a Girl and it reminded me of the many barriers that still exist in the workplace for women. It also highlights the problems created when talented females feel forced to think and react just like their male counterparts. This fine publication is a pleasure to read and many parts are Lichtenberg's own autobiography which helps explain her philosophy and passion. The book is broken down into five chapters and each is seasoned with checklists, sidebars and thought-provoking questions. Pitch Like a Girl also includes some self-analysis testing and even has one appendix for guys to read.
Overcoming cultural expectations can be difficult. But, to be successful and fulfilled at the same time means being who and what you are intended to be on the inside and outside. This book will appeal to both female and male readers because it teaches us to respect each other for our mutual differences. When you understand and appreciate these differences, and view them as genuine strengths, you know that what the French mean when they say, "viva la difference".
A slap to the forehead!.......2005-03-04
Ronna Lichtenberg's Pitch Like a Girl reached the top of my reading stack just in time! I was literally in the midst of sending out promotional packets for my new business when I realized I needed to hold the mail until I finished her book. Ronna's practical advice was like a slap to the forehead - of course I should frame it that way, of course that's what potential clients will need to hear! Even my therapist agreed with Ronna's idea of selling my business as Me, Inc. instead of "just" . . . me. This is a great tool for women who struggle to sell themselves. Gini Hamilton, Communications Consultant.
A book for both genders........2005-01-31
Pitch Like A Girl is a book for both genders. Although this book is addressed to women, if you are a man, you'll find most of it applies to you, too. Because, as Lichtenberg amply illustrates, there may be fixed tendencies arising from "hard-wiring" in the different male and female brains and hormonal systems, but tendencies are subject to manipulation by socialization, by learning and by choice. So, we all end up with both blue (traditionally male) and pink (traditionally female) characteristics.
Ronna Lichtenberg provides her readers with three exceptional tools to improve communication and transactions across the styles that divide us:
1) She simplifies relevant scientific literature on the roles played by physical, psychological and sociological gender differences and makes it easy to understand and interesting to read.
2) She provides handy set of color-coded categories for how those differences work. That set is very useful for accurately interpreting other people's words, behaviors, expectations and intentions.
3) She gives exact, specific instructions on how to use your new understanding to get ahead in business -- and get what you want elsewhere.
In Pitch Like A Girl, you will learn to how to recognize and value both blue and pink characteristics (and your own particular blend) and use your tendencies for your highest benefit. You'll appreciate that the so-called "gender gap" in communicating is really a "pink" and "blue" gap that occurs within genders as well. So you'll be better able to talk to, negotiate with and make presentations to anyone by identifying his or her overall tendencies. In that, this excellent book adds substantially to the literature on male-style and female-style communication (such as Deborah Tannen's books You Just Don't Understand and That's Not What I Meant).
Of course, the book is about more than communications. The author's expression of the need for assertiveness and self-promotion in what she calls the "Me, Inc." approach is of interest to both "pinks" and "blues". As the saying goes, if I had a nickel for every time I explained the concept to both male and female clients, well...I'd have a whole lot of nickels. Let me just say, if you only get this one concept out of this and apply it, you'll be much more effective as an employee, an entrepreneur, a boss or whatever else you are. It is golden.
For women in particular, though, Lichtenberg addresses in depth issues all women face, pink, blue or evenly-striped. Issues that men are unlikely to face for many physical and cultural reasons. Best of all, she doesn't just help you understand them, she has ideas for exactly what to do about them. Men can just skip on to the generically useful parts.
Great insights for professional and personal success.......2005-01-19
I picked up a copy of this book after reading a glowing review in USA Today, and am really grateful I read the paper that day. Pitch Like a Woman is filled with smart, funny, practical insights into the best ways to reach your professional goals--and your personal ones as well. Author Ronna Lichtenberg's discussion of the different ways that men's and women's brains are wired and the pragmatic implications of those findings for how we conduct ourselves in the workplace is fascinating, not to mention incredibly useful. So are her specific tips for understanding your true goals, framing a pitch so that the recipient really hears and is receptive to your message and going after what you want in a way that is effective without being off-putting to others or somehow untrue to who you really are. I'd highly recommend this book--for working women, certainly, but there are plenty of wonderful insights here for men as well.

Practical Guide and Development Map.......2007-10-19
I bought this book a while ago, but still refer to it and the plan that I mapped out. It has you really look into the brands that you relate to that currently exist to see what the values are of that brand. Practical tips on everything from thinking about your real values or skills to presenting yourself professionally as a woman.
Tips are practical and can be used immediately and really help with mapping out a performance plan and development milestones without the preachy tone of the goal setting, quiz, and other leadership and development books that have you focus on one thing at a time. For a queen of multi-tasking, this was the way to go.
Brand yourself or brand your small business. This book will help you in that endeavor........2006-10-30
At the outset let me say that I read this book from the perspective that the reader was a professional such as an attorney or CPA. And that branding oneself would be basically branding their small business.
Are you responsible for the marketing function in a small business? Do you have a written business plan and a written marketing plan? Is your marketing plan working? Could your marketing plan be working better? Maybe your marketing efforts would improve by focusing those efforts so your small business can develop a brand?
This book is short sweet and simple. It explains how to "brand" your small business. It describes the 8-step process in a well-organized and easily understood way. In a nutshell, it says to set goals and devise a plan as to how to achieve them.
Maybe that message is obvious. And maybe someone might say there was no need to even write this book since the message is so simple and obvious. But some people might not have heard or thought of what this book has to say. And the author has done a wonderful job saying it. 5 stars!
Personal branding from a working branding consultant.......2006-06-29
The good thing about this book is that I know that Robin Fisher Roffer does actually work in the branding space and she works with some big companies. So it's a far cry from a bogus self-help book that some of these other tooting horns and walking in front of the parade (no offense if your book includes those words) often portend to offer. In the first couple of chapters she suggests you fill out some forms and begin to package your personal brand strategy. The only thing I wish is that she had used REAL people rather than "Mary Beth" Or "Jillian" who are either composites or made-up characters. Her chapter 5 about recruiting a squad of brand cheerleaders goes along with my advice in my SUCCESSFUL RECAREERING book to create a personal board of advisors....NO INDEX makes me sad -- because I really think that people who are on a quest (potential readers of this kind of book) want an index to check out and refer back to. Some references to a page in your planner type of thing date this a bit for any Gen X or Gen Y user who is heading to social networking sites like Myspace.com or Youtube.com for their videos and bios and brand building. What a difference six years makes...could be a lifetime in Internet Years in the new Digital Economy. Looking forward to meeting the author some day -- and seeing what she says about updating some of the goodies in here.
A True Expert in the Field.......2006-06-19
It takes a lot for me to sit down and read a book cover to cover in a day, but Robin Fisher Roffer managed to not only capture my attention, but to keep it. So much so that after the first few pages, I went in search of my highlighter to call out key parts of the text. I have since recommended this book to every woman I know, and a few men.
It was one of many books I purchased on making a brand of yourself and the others all pale in comparison. She is articulate. Her ideas are presented in a manner that every woman can understand and put to use. This should be required reading for every woman as she graduates!

Customer Reviews:
Insulting title.......2007-07-25
I always find it "interesting" that certain topics feel the need to have "special instruction" for women.... i.e., "investing for women", "car repair for women", and now "buying a home for women". I guess women are more ignorant when it comes to these topics? They need to be spoken to differently? Buying a home is buying a home, and the issues are no different for men and women. SURE, maybe women are treated differently by brokers, mortgage lenders, etc., but then, if you have been a woman your whole life(!), you have probably already figured out how to handle yourself in the world. I feel books such as this one are just pandering and feeding into the whole idea that women are somehow more "fragile" and need to be spoken to like little children, and in simple, short phrases, so that their "delicate minds" don't overload. I find such a mentality insulting and ignorant, and just a cheap ploy by the authors to get certain susceptible women to buy their product.
Too many inaccuracies!!.......2007-07-22
As a Realtor looking at the information Summers provides, it seems that no one proof read what she wrote. There are typos throughout. And if the rest of it is as accurate as her section on using Realtors, wow! She says on p 113 that if the Jones have a house worth $100,000, they must sell it for $120,000 to pay the 6% commission. $20,000 is not 6% of $120,000! The commission is not $12,000 as she says. That's 10%. Furthermore, the house is worth what it's worth whether a real estate agent is involved or not. No money is added to the price to pay a commission. Yes, you can negotiate a commission, but it's not the buyer's concern since the buyer doesn't pay it. And if the home is for sale by owner, you can bet that the homeowner wants that phantom "commission" money for him or herself, and will not share it with the buyer.
I was thinking about using this book to educate my buyers who are mostly women first-time homebuyers. But the information is so wrong, it would be impossible to correct it. It's obvious that Ms Summers is a writer who gathered a lot of info and put it together, but has little day-to-day experience with the subject. If she thinks the commission is $12,000 and my share is $6000, I would very much like to sell her a house! (It's more like $2000 that goes to the agent.)
Undecided.......2007-05-17
I received this book recently and at first site I was disappointed. It looks poorly put together - the front cover looks like it is a photocopy of another and the pages seem to be of low quality.
However, the topics covered in the book seem to be good and I'm looking forward to diving into the book soon.
OK book.......2007-05-15
Some of the information is basic and repetitive from what others are saying but I found it slightly helpful for me. I am looking to purchase my 1st home solo soon....
Informational, but title does not suit content..........2006-08-27
Buying Solo was the first book I read on home-buying. There were helpful tables given to calculate morgtage payments and affordability factors, but nothing that you couldn't find online or in other books. I'm not sure how many books regarding this topic the other reviewers read, but I was surprised to see so many gave this book five stars.
I read this book from cover to cover and only recall one page that suggested this was a book for women to buy solo. I can sum it up for you in one sentence: Be confident, don't let the realtors break your spirit just because they have more faith in couples with twice the income.
Otherwise it's all the same material as all other home-buying books.
Book Description
The making and sharing of money is a loaded issue for every couple. A Citibank survey found financial issues to be the primary reason for divorce, but in this practical guide, clinical psychologist Jonathan Rich shows partners how to avoid finance-based conflicts and make negotiating money matters both pleasurable and productive. Section One starts with a self-assessment quiz to help readers determine their own "money personality" from categories such as "gambler," "banker," "homesteader," "pioneer," "spartan," or "monarch." Working from this foundation, the couple can learn to navigate differences in money-management styles and effectively negotiate financial matters. Section Two focuses on strategies for growing money. Quizzes and exercises reinforce these concepts and make learning them fun. A final section helps readers decide when to seek professional financial help. 20 worksheets are included.

Excellent book with practical, step-by-step advice for real couples!.......2007-01-11
This great workbook is one of my top picks for my clients - couples working on money issues. Jonathan's useful and validated assessment creates much fodder for in-depth discussions on differences around money.
Couples can finally get off the blame wagon and start to really understand why they each operate the way they do around money. My husband and I enjoyed the fresh perspectives for our own marriage too! ;)
Jonathan measures three different "Money Personality" dimensions: Risk-taking, Lifestyle and Dependence. He goes on to dispense useful suggestions for real-life applications - managing spending and debt, work, investments, savings, insurance and financial planning.
The Couple's Guide to Love & Money is among my favorite money book collection. Other titles include: Money Harmony by Olivia Mellan, The Secret Meaning of Money by Cloe Madanes, Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki, Smart and Simple Financial Strategies for Busy People by Jane Bryant Quinn.

Amazing strategies for prosperity and intimacy.......2003-10-24
Too many self-help books offer vague "positive
thinking" advice. Not so with this one. Virtually
every type of financial conflict is addressed in these
pages, and the reader is given fun, interesting, and
effective ways to specifically address problems, gain
insight, and to start a mutual creative path toward
prosperity. The book is filled with real-life stories
of couples with conflicts over money - it's impossible
to go through it without finding situations that you
can perfectly identify with. One section provides a
method for weighing the value of your time - this
section allowed me to make a compelling case to my
husband that hiring occasional household help would
actually help rather than hurt our bottom line! Even
though my marriage is strong, I could still find many
tips which were powerful and effective for moving us
forward financially.
As a psychologist, I frequently see clients facing
the types of problems discussed in this book. I'm
delighted that this volume exists as a resource for
them, one that I'm glad to refer them to. This book
is strongly recommended for any couple, or for any
professional who counsels or advises couples.
Financial Advice with a Heart.......2003-03-25
This book provides useful, unique perspectives about dealing with money as a couple. It is written in a personable style and, unlike a lot of personal finance books, it's fun to read. The book exactly pinpointed my own and my husband's financial styles, and then gave insightful and practical suggestions about how to work together effectively without arguing. I loved the "Shared Dreams" chapter. The author explains that you can accomplish far greater things by working together as a couple than by working individually or at odds with each other. This is a great book, not just for couples that are having money problems or money-related arguments, but also for couples that want to reach higher financial ground. After going through the book with my husband, I feel we understand each other much better, and have a clearer vision of our future together. I LOVED this book. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for any couple.

Book Description
When the workday ends at five, and the cleaners close at six, and dinner needs to be (miraculously) on the table by eight, how can today's women take on the added burden of household finances?
"But they must!" says the author of The Busy Woman's Guide to Financial Freedom. Women are relinquishing to men a major source of freedom and empowerment...failing to acquire the essential financial skills they need...leaving themselves vulnerable to the effects of divorce or death.
The Busy Woman's Guide to Financial Freedom strips away the mystery and confusion that surrounds money management. In clear, jargon-free language, the book supplies a complete and concise primer on every aspect of financial planning, including: budgeting * using credit * investing * buying insurance * planning for college * saving for retirement, and more.
And the book is directed especially to women, both in its supportive tone and inclusive examples. Plus, it's packed with eye-opening anecdotes, helpful "to do" lists, and straightforward directions--time-savers for today's time-pressed women.
Customer Reviews:
A guide for men as well.......2002-03-05
I am favorably impressed by The Busy Women's Guide to Financial Freedom by Vickie L. Bajtelsmit. It is written in plain language with practical examples. For future editions, the book's title should be changed, however, because it is gender-neutral--a guide for men as well.
Great gift for college graduates.......2002-01-26
Vickie Bajtelsmit's book was given to me recently as a gift and I have found it to be an invaluable reference book!
As a 24 year-old, only certain parts of the book seem to apply to me now (sections on credit cards, renter's insurance, student loans); however, I anticipate referring to it often over the coming years. In skimming the sections on buying a car or house and financing a child's education or my own retirement, I can see that careful planning will be the key to achieving what I want in life.
Bajtelsmit's book will definitely help me get a head start on life's big purchases and life's big investments. I probably wouldn't buy such a book for myself, but now that I have the book I don't think I'll need any others. If you have a soon-to-be college graduate in the family, this would make a great gift!
A superbly presented guide to personal finance.......2002-01-08
Vickie Bajtelsmit's Busy Woman's Guide To Financial Freedom is a superbly presented guide to personal finance telling women how to gain more control over finances; from tracking where money is spent to choosing health and insurance plans and taking advantage of tax-preferred methods of saving. From buying a house to daily budgeting and credit card management, this is filled with fine tips.
Great financial tips, easy to use.......2001-11-29
"The Busy Womans Guide to Financial Freedom" has really helped me get our financial planning on track. It has helped me improve the organization of my financial records as well as be realistic about how much life insurance we need. I found the college planning chapter helpful for making savings decisions for our new baby.
I especially liked the chapter where she compares budgeting to dieting. It was a humorous way of helping me find those extra dollars I need to reach our financial goals.
It's easy to follow and you won't be disappointed.
