As an elected Treasurer and local government finance director for the past several years, I found this book to be an excellent primer for all elected and appointed officials. The practical advice offered by Mr. Wood is based on his experience and input from his peers and is extremely valuable. The book is written in a very informal and concise way and should be required reading for all elected officials. In fact, I gave this book to each City Council member and they have all indicated that this book provided excellent financial advice.

What a delightful book. The author has presented his subject in an understandable and capitivating manner. He does this by using lots of real life vignettes to make his points. People who want to know what their local officials should and should not be doing will want to read this book.

Len Wood writes from first hand knowledge and experience. He describes the situation; outlines the facts; details the results; and provides the reader with suggestions to lessen financial risk and/or failure in the expenditure of public funds.
While the author's primary target is the newly elected official, the importance of this work to experienced elected and appointed public officals cannot be overstated. No one who has worked in the public sector can peruse this book without saying, "There, but for the grace of God, go I!"

Great book! Has a wonderful history of fundraising element to it that I was not expecting. It really is fantastic to feel as if the work you are doing for a non-profit is really making a difference, doing things Egger's way will get you there.
Good Background and Ideas!.......2006-03-16
Eighty-four Americans volunteer with a charity, and $200 billion is contributed every year. "Begging for Change" summarizes Robert Egger looking back on his experiences (first running successful night clubs, then a non-profit kitchen and training program) and offering his critique of the $800 billion non-profit world in general.
A key Egger point is that non-profits need to ask: "Are you perpetuating a cycle of need and dependency?" Today charity is governed by innumerable individuals and their egos, many of which are "business-as-usual" career do-gooders who've never run their own company. Many duplicate each others' services and fight each other for funding. They talk of how many were fed or sheltered, but not about how many got out of dependency.
There now are more than 1.5 million non-profits, and their latest evolution is to "realize" that they have to pay those at the top well to attract good people. Thus, in D.C. there are about 25,000 non-profits, requiring over $1.5 billion just for CEO and executive director salaries! Yet, over 70% have revenues less than $500,000/year, and neither government nor Adam Smith's "Invisible Hand" act to make those that are ineffective go away. Many should.
In addition, there is the needless complexity added by multiple funding sources and their frequent "strings." One non-profit gets its $20 million from 161 sources - think of all the attention required to mind all those masters!
Egger started a training program for cooks, food-handlers, and servers - thus, both offering them a "hand-up" (instead of just a "hand-out") and substantially reducing the need for full-time assistants. Many fail, but many more succeed; even a substantial number of those that fail initially (drug tests, absences) reform, come back, and later complete the program.
Another important Egger point is that companies interested in helping the poor should first focus on paying their own employees well enough so that they can succeed, rather than paying them so little that they cannot succeed and then wondering how to help others that are downtrodden.
Another Egger innovation was to realize that local catering services were always being leaned on by non-profits to provide deeply discounted services. Egger offered to take that business over with his staff in training - and thus relieved them of a burden while providing his trainees with an important opportunity to demonstrate their talents first-hand to society's higher-ups. He also briefly illustrates examples where organizations provide for-profit services while focusing on hiring those with checkered or limited backgrounds.
Egger points out that the aging Baby Boom will soon provide a test of our social services as they move into old age and increasingly require more services.
Finally, Egger suggests that "more" is not always "better." For example, if his organization held a fund-raiser to renovate or acquire new facilities, that would deplete resources available in the community for other needy organizations.
Egger's examples of systems thinking and sacrifice by those at the top (Egger took only a $50,000 salary while heading the D.C. United Fund) should be taken to heart by all non-profits (especially the Red Cross) and the government (with its many overlapping and conflicting programs).

Egger dismisses the work of fundraising revolutionaries like Dan Pallotta without really understanding what Pallotta was about. With Egger's "vision" non-profits would stay small, pay their workers miserly wages, and the next generation of fundraisers would be wise to look for better paying work. As a person inexperienced with community foundations or nonprofit organizations and now on a foundation committee, I found Mr. Egger's book to be colorful, amusing, down to earth and imminently practical. To think that someone in the seemingly shallow entertainment business could turn around and use his knowledge to change nonprofits and foundations into dynamic enterprises with enthusiastic participants at all levels is exremely inspiring.

Egger's book is an excellent combination of facts, cause-effect logic and practical suggestions on how to make charity much more life-changing for the recipients. As a Hurricane Katrina victim, I know first hand how little meaningful help comes from big not-for-profits and government. The system is crying for reform. Eggers has an approach that works better than many current ones. People in positions of authority need to listen and change behaviors.

I have read this book and found it be be very insightful and informative. I would highly recommend this resource to those taking a looking at their financdial status and making corrective changes. A Must for Anyone and race should not matter.......2001-07-19
I read this book about three years ago when I was deeply in debt always borrowing from one credit card to pay another credit card. After reading this book I stopped making Tommy Hilfiger, Perry Ellis and Ralph Lauren so rich and started paying myself and it has paid off in ways I could not imagine. I don't have ten credit cards anymore and I don't bounce checks anymore either, but instead I am reading Black Enterprise and the Wall Street Journal looking for the best investment opportunities.

This book should be read by every african-american. While I was reading I thought she was talking about me. We seem to spend more money on unnecessary things and worry and complain about how we are going to pay those high interest credit cards. I now look at life and living a whole lot different. I have passed the book on to other family members in hopes that it changes their lives like it has changed mine.

I had bought this planning book because I really like the the other book Bridal Bargains written by the same author Denise Fields. I'm in the process of planning of my wedding, and so far the only part that helped me was the first one or two chapters on setting a wedding budget. The rest I thought was too general. I was able to find most of the same or more information from surfing the web. Again, for a much better buy, get the Bridal Bargains book instead.

I enjoyed looking through this wedding planner workbook, designed to go with the book of the similar name. It has additional hints and tips not in the book, and plenty of places to write down lists of things that are important to weddings. I bought it for my 25 year old daughter who loves to organize and plan things - especially for her own wedding - and a person like her will use it. If you are not a "write down" planner type of person, maybe just the book would be enough.

Not a bad idea!.......2005-12-30
This book shows that brother and sister have no idea on how to save their money. Mama and Papa try just giving them their allowances to see how they would spend it instead of them just asking Papa for money all the time. Well, they gave it to them at the beginning of the week, at which time the cubs would make a mad dash to the store and spend the whole thing. They did that week after week until they decided that they needed more. So, Papa and Mama do increase their allowances, but instead of them running off and spending it, Mama gives them a checkbook which shows how much money they have. When they want something, they writea check for cash for Mama to cash and voila! They can buy their item.
What this book teaches is how to manage the money and actually see where it goes. I'm not sure the checkbook idea is a fantastic one, maybe more of a ledger system without the checks included would be better. Perhaps Mama should just keep their money in a type of bank and when the cubs want something, they could tell her how much it cost and actually see what they have left in their "accounts." That way, it's treated like a savings account instead of just a cash account. The main goal should be to teach kids to save their money, not spend it. But then that's another story...
I'm not sure that I really recommend this book or not. It's not a favorite in this house because it is quite "blah." It doesn't really enforce the money issue is a direct way, or so I think, but it is quite amusing to see the cubs' faces when they get their money for the week!
How to use a checkbook?.......2002-07-01
Stan and Jan should have left the topic of money management alone, especially considering they seem to have covered the subject quite well in the classic "Trouble With Money," published in 1983. Basically, this book tries to teach young children how to manage their money through the use of a checkbook and even includes sample checks for kids to write. Not a bad idea, I suppose, until you consider the fact that the kids who read this book are in first and second grade. Does that mean that we will be giving third and fourth graders credit cards in the near future? I hope not. To avoid any further cynicism, though, I urge parents to preview this book before purchasing, because it may not be what you first expect. The manuscript and drawings in "Dollars and Sense" are also decidedly second-rate. Instead, I highly recommend "The Berenstain Bears' Trouble with Money," for it is not only more sound and appropriate advice for the age level, but the the story and illustrations are also much more inspired.

This was alright I though it shows the truth about money. But i think it would be better for the younger group of kids, like 3-5 year olds.
