4 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners.......2007-10-21

This is one of the best books on the market for beginners. It contains all things that a beginner needs to know about what a stock is, how the stock market operates, capitalism, how free markets operate and much more. It explains how to really invest and trade for profit using valuations, technical stock movements and emotional factors. It also expands into the futures and bond markets and explains options and selling short. I found the chapter that tracked all the greatest performing sectors for each year over the last century very informative. This book is just packed full of information that you will learn from and be able to profit from in the markets. The only reason I did not give it five stars was due to it needing an update, it is a 10 year old book and I would like to see the last ten years added in to an updated version of this book.

Also check out Jason Kelly's "Neatest little guide to stock market investing" for another great book for beginners.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to the stock market........2006-03-01

Even a novice could learn the working of western
economics ( capitalistic ), the influence of Government
intervention, the mechanics of the stock market, and
the way to use the best investment paper today: Investor's
Business Daily. Only criticism: you should have noted
that the book is the same as the one published 10 years ago,
and not a new edition!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Primer on Stocks, Funds, Bonds, Options, Futures.......2004-03-23

This book is pure gold for investors who are just getting started in playing the market. Coupling this book with a subscription to Investor's Business Daily will help you make good decisions quickly and minimize the punishing losses that naive investors sometimes take. IBD does a good job of explaining technical issues in easy to understand language along with showing pertinent charts and graphs.

4 out of 5 stars Good for beginning CAN SLIM investors.......2004-03-07

This book is actually half decent it isn't near as good as How to make money in stocks but it covers a lot of relevant information for newer investors.

The chapters cover these wonderful topics:

* Capitalism: What it is and why it works
* The stock market: Primer on what stocks are and how the market works
* Mutual funds
* Options
* Bonds
* Futures market
* Economics and economic indicators

The book reminds me of Investing Smart however Guide to the Markets is at least 10 times better and covers more topics, not to mention the writers are much better than Dhun H. Sethna.

I recommend this for beginning CAN SLIM investors.

4 out of 5 stars A Useful First Step.......2004-01-27

This book is a *primer*, and as such will likely be neither the best nor the worst book you'll ever read on the subject of investing (fwiw, I actually found the content average, and the writing style a bit like summertime in the Sahara). For me though, the book earned its fourth "star" for a single--yet *really* important--reason: its connection to the IBD newspaper. For about $25, _Guide to the Markets_ explains much of its information using the same graphs and other formats as you'll find in the company's daily. *That* is a great deal considering that IBD is one of the best, if more expensive, investment tools available. For its ability to cheaply provide access to that very powerful tool, while also providing other occasional insights, _Guide to the Markets_ is a very good value. (It's nicely indexed enough to serve as a solid reference as well).

Book Description

MAXIMIZE YOUR RETURNS -- MINIMIZE YOUR RISK

Now, more than ever before, average investors are embracing index funds to eliminate the anxiety and expense of trying to predict which individual stocks, bonds, or mutual funds will "beat the index." In The Index Fund Solution, Richard E. Evans and Burton G. Malkiel explore why choosing index funds -- funds that buy and hold all stocks or bonds within a given group of securities -- ensures that you will always do as well as the market average.

The Index Fund Solution not only examines why index funds are growing rapidly in popularity but, using easy-to-understand language, also explains how anyone, from longtime investors to novices, can use these thriving funds to create a successful investment strategy. Whether you are saving for a child's education, the purchase of a house, or your retirement nest egg, index funds can be the key to unlocking the potential of dependable, long-term returns.

5 out of 5 stars Well written, easily readable, & very convincing........2006-04-11

I've read 4 - 6 different books on index funds & exchange traded funds in the past 2 years; plus using the considerable resources of Mornngstar & AAII, both on-line & in print. This is the best single book I've read that covers the entire index fund intellectual & financial universe. Written to the level of an American college graduate, reasonably financially literate, but not a financial professional. The material is well organized, logical, fun to read, humerous at times, & easily understandable. Evans suceessfully avoids clogging up his book with the incredibly complex mathematics & numerology which characterize many books & studies in this area. If you're looking for a single comprehensive resource to understand index funds, this is my nomination! Good luck!

3 out of 5 stars Evans-Malkiel Book a good primer on indexing.......2000-05-02

Review of The Index Fund Solution by Evans/Malkiel

This is a good primer on using index funds to build a core portfolio, both with tax-deferred funds, such a 401(k) retirement savings, and taxable funds. The contributions of Evans , an investment advisor, is sandwiched between Professor Malkiel's introduction and closing chapter. It is one of three books I have read recently on the subject. Bogle's 2nd book on Mutual Funds is more technical and Swedloe's book is similar but is more oriented to the Dimensional Fund Advisors (DFA) approach.

The only mention of DFA is to Rex Sinquefield, Co-chair and CIO of DFA whose name is misspelled and whose title is wrong. DFA's enhanced index funds, based on the CRISP indexes are a major omission in the Evans-Malkiel book. Individuals can purchase those funds either if their employer's 401(k) has them available or if they use an advisor who has a relationship with DFA. The DFA 9-10 microcap funds have vastly different characteristics of size and value than the Russell 2000 or Wilshire 4500 index funds.

A few minor quibbles The Sharpe ratio example (p 86) 1.14% should be 1.14

P47 implies that "defined contribution plans" started in 1978. They go back 50+ years earlier to money purchase, profit sharing and stock bonus plans. In addition recent legislation allows employees of non-profits to be covered under 401(k) as well as 403(b) plans.

Evans chapter on taxes might have mentioned federal estate taxes which have a great impact on qualified plan participants with sizable estates. His three recommendations for variable annuities are all more expensive than one he omitted, TIAA-CREF.

Malkiel's final chapter provides an excellent rationale for capitalization weighted indexes as the only practical index-fund alternative, compared to dollar weighted and price weighted. DFA has an interesting approach to foreign indexing involving equal country weighting.

Malkiel, in his recommended portfolios, doesn't mention DFA's products in the large cap, REIT, foreign and small cap areas. While MPT and efficient frontier portfolios may be intellectually satisfying, Bogle and I have some problems with how slavishly one should follow their results.

All in all, this book is a very good starting point.

4 out of 5 stars Great starter, good price.......2005-09-01

The down-to-earth approach of this book ensures that it is more dense than other guides for beginners. Gets you from knowing absolutely nothing to a level at which you can start reading about technical analysis, read financial papers, annual and quarterly reports. Good 'further reading' tips. Good coverage of bonds. Options and futures are discarded as being equivalent to gambling. Parts about the risks of investing, how to spread the investment, and the role of brokers is a little boring, but this really is a good starter.

5 out of 5 stars An Outstanding "Primer" on Investing.......1998-01-03

The Small Investor is an excellent book to read if you are looking for a complete and basic introduction to the subject of investing. I found the chapters on Professional Help and Selecting Mutual Funds to be particularly helpful. A feature that Jim Gard included that I really appreciate is the "Recommended Further Reading" that is at the end of each chapter. It gives you a place to go to examine the subject in more detail than would be appropriate in a "Primer." This book is ideal for anyone just entering the world of investments. Financial Planners and Money Managers should consider giving a copy of this book to each of their new clients. Jim Hagen

5 out of 5 stars Best Introduction to the Stock Market.......2003-02-15

This was my first book on investing, three years ago. It starts with the assumption that you know nothing, but it treats you like an educated, intelligent person. The pace goes quickly, and by the end of the book you know everything you need to know to be an intelligent investor.
I have recommended this book to several friends who wanted a good investing primer.

5 out of 5 stars An Edifying Read.......2000-12-19

Groz's book is just the kind of investment book that has been needed to fill the gap between market kitch and high-brow professional narrative. It leaves the reader feeling well informed but piques her curiousity -- and prepares her for an even deeper understanding of the markets and investing. It is clear that this was Groz's intention. A great book for journeyman investors seeking to negotiate markets and market-speak on a daily basis.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book on Investing.......2000-08-05

After reading many books on investing, this is the first I've found that offers keen insights to beginners and advanced investors. I would have no problem recommending this book to any of my Wall Street friends--or to my parents.

    4 out of 5 stars Good Book.....a little 'boring'.............2000-06-21

This is a pretty good book...it seems to me it covers ground a little too fast, and dosen't give enough examples. If you are a quick learner, this is a good book for you. To me, after I got to the part on Mutual Funds I started getting bored....I just wish it was a little more fun to read...but again, A good book to read and learn about the stock market.

    5 out of 5 stars I made money already.......1999-02-24

Thanks--this is an incredibly well written and clear guide. Based on some of Groz' theories, I sold two stocks last week and moved the money into two others I already owned. The market has been good since then, but the two I sold have gone down and the two I kept have gone up. Great book.

The Fabian trend-following plan is one of the simplest [and] most understandable, and is one that investors can actually live with. --The Hulbert Financial Digest

Over the past two decades, even before the introduction of enhanced index funds, Dick Fabian has helped thousands of individuals average an astonishing 17 percent compounded growth. His mutual fund-based investment plan was ranked #1 nine times by the respected Hulbert Financial Digest.

Now, in The Mutual Fund Wealth Builder, Fabian gives individual investors the tools to trade mutual funds with lowered risk and increased rates of return. This plain-spoken book shows investors how to:
*Follow six investment steps to increase returns
*Understand concepts including compounding and indexing
*Perform--and act on--their own market analyses

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great writer, good plan, somewhat outdated........2006-08-31

Dick Fabian really cared about teaching people what he had learned from investing. Sadly, his son is money hungry and didn't keep up the free info that is referenced in the book on the website. I learned a lot about investing and some basic strategies to avoid major losses in the stock market. His theory isn't going to make you rich overnight, but hopefully it will raise your rate of return a couple of points over your lifetime, which could mean big bucks for some people. If you look closely, he says shoot for 20%, but he even points out that his picks over time only got him 14%. I will say one thing, if you would have used his plan, you would have been out of the market during the whole stock market crash in 2000-2002 and back in the thing in 2003. That alone makes this worth a read.

    5 out of 5 stars Enlightening.......2006-01-21

This is a great book! You can really tell that Mr. Dick Fabian's objective is to help out small investors to make money on the market. He outlines a specific trading strategy that will get you into the market when the trend is up, and out of the market when the trend is down.

About the 39WAR that the other people are complaining about, saying that it cannot be found anywhere on the web, and that it is a sales pitch. This is not true. 39WAR is the same as 200-day moving average, which are generally available on any charting software, as well as online charting sites like Yahoo Finance, Stockcharts, and Big Charts. How did I came into this conclusion? Easy: 39 Weeks = (39 x 5) days = 195 days - five days, since the market only trades during the weekdays.

I believe the 39WAR is a relic from the past, since during the earlier days, market data are most accessible via weekly reports on newspapers. Furthermore, most investors would not want to calculate 200-day averages by hand - it's just too tedious. But of course, with the advent of computers and the Internet, any decent spreadsheet can do this calculations for you.

5 out of 5 stars Read this book if you want a 20% annual return.......2005-08-30

In early 2001, after watching the poor job my bank, and then later Merrill Lynch was doing with my Rollover IRA, I went to a book store looking specifically for an author that had a formula for getting in and out of mutual funds during up and down markets. It took only five minutes of browsing this book to realize it was exactly what I was looking for. In May 2001 I finally completed transfer of all funds into a money market account at Charles Schwab. But alas, Dick Fabian's formula (the 39 week moving averages)told me not to buy any mutual funds. My account remained stationary during the next 7 months, through the bear market, through 9/11 until the next buy signal hit in December. I have been in and out of the markets twice since then. In May of this year I picked up my calculator to see what my return has been over the past 4 years. 20% annual return! This despite one of the longest bear markets this country has ever seen. Thank you Dick Fabian for this amazing book. Even though the book is 4 years old now, the principles still apply. Fabian recommends using a discount broker like Charles Schwab, but they are no longer the best "deal" out there. Reviewer Wiley states that Fabians 39 week average readings are not to be found except for his sons expensive web site. Wiley must have skipped page 123 that shows you how to substitute Fabians 39 week average reading of his own Domestic Fund Composite with the Dow and S&P 500.

    2 out of 5 stars Sales Pitch.......2004-04-17

I'm not going to comment on the effectiveness of Fabian's principles, but I will comment on a serious problem I had with the book. The 39WAR that he relies on for technical indicators of when to be in stocks and when to be out of stocks is very difficult to find. The only place I could find it on the web was on his son's website and it came along with a rather pricey subscription to his newsletter. To me, this is a glaring sales pitch that the book predicates itself on, and to me is a serious conflict of interest.

Of course, this is all not to say that his principles aren't effective, they very well may be.

4 out of 5 stars A simple investment plan highly recommended.......2003-10-25

Based on the previous reviewer comment, I wonder if we read the same book. This is NOT a "get rich quick" book - it's polar opposite. Perhaps "get rich slowly" would be more appropriate. I've read both this book, and Maverick Investing which is written by Doug Fabian (Dick's son). If choosing between the two, this much better. (However, Maverick Investing does a better job discussing setting proper stop-losses based on your tolerance for risk. I recommend reading both books). An excellent read on taking control of your investments. It provides step by step instruction as to how to set goals for your investments via mutual funds, select the right funds, track those funds, and when to buy and sell. He uses a very simple technique to get you in an out of the market by tracking your funds against two indexes - a broad market index, and another index reflecting the type of funds you own. You track your funds by using 39 Week Average Readings (more commonly known as the 200 day moving averages - which can be found anywhere on the web). In a nutshell, his technique will not get you into the market at the very bottom, and won't get you out at the very top. But he will get you in and out somewhere in between which is a far more realistic approach for positive long term results. The opposite of get rich quick, it simply shows that by setting realistic goals, and learning to recognize existing trends, how very small investments over a long period will result extrodinary wealth. For those who already have a healthy retirement nest egg, he shows you how to pay yourself during retirement while still growing your principal. This is a great introductory book on investing using a proven approach which only requires a few minutes a week to maintain. The book's has two shortfalls. As the stock market has risen to ever-greater heights in recent years, high-tech stocks have led the way. But how many investors, though up to their ears in tech stocks, truly understand what they own? Michael Murphy, editor of the California Technology Stock Letter, makes it his business to understand the breakthroughs in science and engineering that are reshaping our lives. His book, Every Investor's Guide to High-Tech Stocks and Mutual Funds, is a useful guide for investors, both beginners and pros. It includes rundowns on the latest trends in semiconductors, computers, software, communications, and medical technology. This second edition includes a chapter on investing in Internet stocks. Murphy presents his own strategy for picking tech stocks, and offers recommendations of stocks and technology mutual funds that may have the best long-term prospects.

    Book Description

    Updated with new information, including:

The newest ways to invest in Internet stocks
Recent biotech developments and their effect on the market
Latest trends in high-tech consumer products

Updated and revised for the Third Edition, this national bestseller shows you how investing in high-tech can make you rich--even if you don't understand the technology.

How do you find the next Cisco or Intel? How can you avoid losing your shirt on start-up companies that suddenly fizzle and die? And how can techies and non-techies alike get the edge on Wall Street's booming high-technology sector?

Whether the stock market is enjoying an explosive bull run or retreating in the face of a possible bear market, the world of high-tech has become the most important investment opportunity of our time. Now, in this latest revised edition of Every Investor's Guide to High-Tech Stocks and Mutual Funds, Michael Murphy shows that you don't have to be an engineer or research scientist to do well in technology stocks. From software to communications to biotech, Every Investor's Guide to High-Tech Stocks and Mutual Funds provides refreshingly clear, jargon-free analysis of the eight key technology industries, sharing coveted insider tips and wisdom that will supercharge your portfolio's results.

Every Investor's Guide to High-Tech Stocks and Mutual Funds quickly established itself as the definitive book on high-tech stocks when it was first released in the fall of 1997. In this fully updated Third Edition, Murphy provides information on the newest ways to invest in Internet stocks, recent biotech developments and their effect on the market, and the latest trends in high-tech consumer products. Also included is a revised and updated list of the author's predicted blue chips of 2010.

Focusing on long-term investment strategies--including the easy-to-use Growth-Flow strategy that has made Murphy's California Technology Stock Letter one of the top-rated investment publications in the world--Murphy answers frequently asked questions and guides readers through the dos and don'ts of putting your money into high-tech. Got the inside scoop on an upstart software company or a great no-load fund that has skyrocketed in the past six months? Murphy shows you how to evaluate opportunities, decipher industry hype, and pick your shots with care. Unsure if you should heed the experts' warnings about the economy and the oncoming investment slump? Murphy offers surefire techniques for knowing when to invest--and when to get out. Simply trying to fund a comfortable retirement? Murphy examines a variety of stock and mutual fund options, and helps you assess which ones best suit your needs.

Whether you're investing in blue chip stocks or convertible bonds, this groundbreaking book provides essential information on how to build a technology portfolio, how to calculate the downside risk of any investment, and how to apply Murphy's unique, proven Growth-Flow model to maximize your returns. With detailed company profiles, stock performance records, and contact information for thirty of the best technology mutual funds, as well as forecasts for the next five years, Every Investor's Guide to High-Tech Stocks and Mutual Funds arms individual investors with everything they need to cash in on the current technology boom and beat the Dow in the stock market's hottest sector.

2 out of 5 stars Okay, but nothing new here!.......2000-08-06

I'm kind of scratching my head here, wondering if I read the same book as all the five star reviewers. I wanted a bit more of a discussion on risk, I wanted more on how the money he runs has been performing, and a bit more rigor on the decisions as to choose stocks.

However, I did like the opening chapter, and the discussion on convertible bonds for high-tech companies, even though both could have done with a little more "meat" also.

Good for the novice, but anyone with a bit more experience will be frustrated.

2 out of 5 stars No Guide or Strategy here.......2000-04-08

Some explanation about high tech sectors. Then some fundementals used to evaluate companys. This book is a waste of time and money. Dont buy it because of its attractive title.

5 out of 5 stars Mike Murphy is a genius.......2000-01-27

This book makes so much sense. Murphy points out the indicators that our society and economy are undergoing fundamental changes, as significant as the evolution from a hunter-gather society to agricultural; agricultural to industrial; industrial to commercial; and now it's commercial to informational/high-tech. Even if you weren't interested in his investing advice, this book would be worth reading for enjoyment, and to educate yourself about the developments that are going on in our society in technology and biotechnology. But once you read this book, you'll find yourself unable to resist taking Murphy's advice on investing. Who wouldn't want to do just what he says after he tells you the inside scoop (Wall Street is underestimating the potential because they're so far removed from where the action is) that is practically guaranteed to make you a lot of money (just look at the indicators around you!)? After reading it, I subscribed to his newsletter and check his web site daily (www.techinvestingonline.com), and I follow his advice. I've certainly joined the Mike Murphy cult, even though I recognize that his writing is a bit sensationalist...I can't not believe that what he's saying is true.

5 out of 5 stars At last I understand technology.......2000-01-17

I've been working in computer R&D since the late 60's. I was jealous of friends who paid for their Silicon Valley houses using investments in Hi-Tech. The field just seemed too confusing and too volatile. Now it's like the gold rush of 1849 and even crazier. I found Murphy after a search of Amazon.com and what a great book! He explains the industry and it all fit together with what I knew from experience. A subscription to Murphy's California Technology Stock Letter resulted in a 97.9% increase in my portfolio for 1999 with half of it invested in index stocks. Note that none of the Hi-Tech picks were in internet stocks. (Murphy performs detailed fundamental analysis and believes in value. Only recently has he added any internet stocks.) Note that he concentrates on the Western USA since he insists on face to face discussions with the CEO before making a recommendation. Some complain that Murphy doesn't understand biotech - well his biotech picks are hot now. Others say look at his mutual funds - a fair complaint in 1998 but 1999 his technology fund was up 97%. So if you want to understand the Hi-Tech and Bio-Tech industries you have to read Murphy.

1 out of 5 stars The author did very poorly for his own mutual funds!.......1999-11-09

I checked out the book from local library. It looks interesting. I flipped through the book and found out that the author manages two mutual funds: "Murphy New World Biotechnology Fund" (MNWBX) and "Murphy New World Technology Fund"(MNWTX).

I checked the funds performances. They are the bottom of the same fund category since the start of the funds. I returned the book right away.

Are the strategies proven winning strategies? I don't think so. Save your time and money. Otherwise, you'll only get some wrong ideas and even lose tons of money like the author did.

There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, comprehensive, thoroughly researched, and portable - everything you need to know, from the federal sources you trust.

This DVD-ROM disc is for use in a computer DVD drive. The files can be accessed from the File Explorer in the same way that you open files from a CD-ROM disc; the CD-ROM and DVD-ROM formats are functionally the same, but the DVD has more than six times greater storage capacity. 5 out of 5 stars Good book on investing.......2003-11-15

With so many investing books out there, what a pleasure it is to read one that has practical information that actually works.

The "Profit-Line" Strategy will have you in the right investments at the right time and out before the roof caves in.
Dicks also goes into detail discussing sector funds and international funds. When to be in a money market fund and when to be in a bond fund. He also discusses "Investing for the times of your life" offering tailor made advice for people in their 20's, 40's and during retirement.

Overall, a very practical and workable book on how to successfully invest in funds. Also interesting is that Dicks was one of the first to warn about back-end loads and hidden fees and costs that most mutal fund companies used to keep hidden in the small print.

Although the book was written back in 1997, the principles are still very sound. I would like to see Dicks write and updated version with perhaps his feelings on ETFs which are low cost but charge commissions.

For business owners, I highly recommend Dicks "How to Incorporate series" and "Form Your Coporation and Launch a Business in Any State."

5 out of 5 stars One of the most under rated books out there.......2003-11-09

This excellent book by J.W.Dicks will take you from thinking about investing to actually investing and more importantly, investing profitably.Mutual funds are still the safest, most powerful way to invest in securities despite what is going on right now in the industry. The key is education and taking personal responsibility in lieu of turning your money over to a broker and saying "Here you invest it and watch it for me."J.W. Dicks will show you how to take control over your investments, start with little money but get big returns.I also recommend "Moonlght Investing", another book by Dicks as well as two other books by Dicks that were recommended to me and I jsut read are "Form a Corporation and Launch a Business in Any State" and"The Small Business Kit.Dicks is an attorney as well as a successful entrepneneur. Beware of other books written by people who are essentially brokers and write strategies to match the products they sell. There are also some book written by "How to Incorporate" by people who have yet to launch their own business, save selling used books and writing self published books.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful, useful advice.......2003-11-07

This book by J.W. Dicks is possibly the best mutual fund book available today. I have been using his profit line strategy for the past 3 years and have made money while others have lost money. Dicks is one of the very few that recommends moving averages and relative strength factors with mutual funds. The chapter on how to reduce taxes was also very helpful.I also recommend Moonlight Investing also by J.W. DICKS.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless advice by Dicks.......2003-11-06

I bought this book over 5 years ago and consider it the single best investing book out there. Especially when you consider what is going on right now in the mutual fund industry, the old mantra that "a mutual fund is a mutual fund" is not true at all.

Dicks shows you how to take the risk out of investing. How and when to move in and out of stocks, bonds and money market funds. He covers international funds as well and sector funds.

Dicks was also one of the first people to caution that mutual funds are not without risk. I believe that investors could have saved a small fortune (I know I did) had they had this information back in 2000 and even more recently.

I also recommend Moonlight Investing also by Dicks and the 100 Best Investments for your retirement by J.W.Dicks et all.

If you are in business then Form a Corporation and Launch a Business in Any State is a must read as well. Dicks is one of those authors that most people have never heard of, but he packs powerful information in his books that actually works and is based on experience not opinion.

      Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Good investment book by Dicks.......2002-11-21

Mutual fund investment Strategies is 260 pages and 18 chapters, packed with powerful investment strategies. Mr. Dicks does make a strong case for mutual fund investing in place of individual stock investing. Dicks explains that you can invest in stocks and invest in a mutual fund, check your results in 1-2 years and see which has performed better. In most cases, it will be the mutual fund as most investors lose on individual stocks. On the other hand, if your individual stocks have performed better, then go with individual stocks...BUT...be sure to check your net rate of return.J.W. Dicks also talks about how to reduce risk and the fact that he discloses risk with mutual funds unlike other financial authors, is refreshing.Mr. Dicks also discusses investing for the "Times of Your Life" offering model portfolios for investors at various stages of their life.Overall, a very good investment book and I highly recommend it.
