Book Description

The market leading Essentials of Investments, 6e by Bodie, Kane and Marcus is an undergraduate textbook on investment analysis, presenting the practical applications of investment theory to convey insights of practical value. The authors have eliminated unnecessary mathematical detail and concentrate on the intuition and insights that will be useful to practitioners throughout their careers as new ideas and challenges emerge from the financial marketplace. Essentials maintains the theme of asset allocation (authors discuss asset pricing and trading then apply these theories to portfolio planning in real-world securities markets that are governed by risk/return relationships).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for begineers.......2007-05-10

For someone who is new to world of finance, this is best book I have come across which is easy to read and covers details of investment. I like the layout of chapters and most of basic chapters are followed by more advance concepts in next chapter.

1 out of 5 stars If you'd like a serious headache, buy this book........2006-10-05

I made the mistake of choosing this book as this text for an undergraduate finance course because it is used by the New York Society of Financial Analysts in their portfolio management class. Don't make the same mistake!! Part One is very informative and gives the reader practical information and advice. The rest of the book is terrible. The equity section concentrates on Modern Portfolio Theory--the Efficient Fronter, co-variation, efficient markets, blah, blah, blah. While Value Investing is mentioned (barely), it is almost an afterthought and it's certainly frowned upon. I wonder how poor investors like Warren Buffet and Seth Klarman have made any money at all using the Value Investing approach. I found the section on bonds and fixed income portfolio management interesting but difficult to follow. I traded corporate and municipal bonds for 20 years. If I had not had such a background, I would have been totally confused. If you are a quantitative GENIUS, this book MAY help you. If you are not, you can choose another book and learn much more.

1 out of 5 stars Poor.......2006-06-16

This is a poorly written finance text. It is not organized and unclear in some sections. I have a degree in Finance, and I would never recommend this book to anyone.

1 out of 5 stars Knowing your subject and knowing how to teach it are different things.......2006-05-21

The authors no doubt know Investment analysis. Unfortunately they don't communicate that information too well. Frequently happens when Phd's forget they are writing to students, not other Phd's. Bought this book for a senior level finance course, required to complete my major in finance.
Even my Prof. started the course with, "the textbook is difficult to read but just follow my notes and you should do ok". Not too good of an endorsement for a textbook. Now, after completing the course, I am searching for another text on the subject to keep as a reference. Even after the lectures, this book's explinations of the same topics are difficult to follow.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction.......2006-05-13

Bodie's "Essentials of Investments" sevres as helpful, comprehensive introduction to investments. This book is modeled on Bodie's larger graduate text "Investments" leaving out only the sections on Equilibrium in Capital Markets and skimping on some of the finer mathematical details within the other sections. You will prefer this book if you are just beginning in the field, and you will not be disappointed with what you learn. The book is an easy and engaging read if you are an "intelligent layman", and it is certainly feasable even if you have a limited general education background. Overall, great introduction to the investment field. Recommended.

Dorsey,DeRosier & the rest of the Dorsey Wright Crew continue to amaze and improve with each edition. The bottom line is an outstanding system which takes the emotion out of investing and if followed makes money. Its an easy read and system to apply whether you're a novice or experienced investing professional. A must read and better yet a must system if you're serious about making money. 5 out of 5 stars Great resource for anyone sick of pie chart investing..........2007-05-25

I have been studied Tom's material on the Dorsey Wright website for several years now. And this book is a cumulation of many of the great ideas he talks about in his podcasts and daily notes section. As much as some people like to think technical analysis is the holy grail to riches, it is not. The main goal is risk management and not to hold on to the big losers in your portfolio that will destroy your investment return. How many investors have suffered since 2000 by having a majority of their portfolio in Large Cap Growth, and are now just getting back to even? Point and Figure doesn't call the top or the bottom, but it will alert you to when the trend changes. Tom's book goes over many of these techniques. Well done.

2 out of 5 stars Warren Buffett would disagree.......2007-05-07

Warren Buffett would surely disagree with the basic premise of this book: That technical charting analysis can ensure a successful stock investment.

You really do have to already believe that charting has an underlying validity, before venturing to this book. I found it difficult to distinguish this from any other technical investing text. Invariably, there are the cute slogans. Double Top. Triple Top. Diagonal Triple Top. Triple Bottom. High Pole. Low Pole. Broadening Top. Bearish Signal Reversed.

With all this jargon, there is little proferred objective evidence of efficacy. Yes, certain patterns might in some examples give rise to a prediction about future price performance that turned out correct. But what about other cases, where the predictions failed? Dorsey addresses this by saying that the most important thing is your judgment, about when to apply his methods. What objective measures are there, about developing and applying this judgment? The text is so vague on this, that every case where someone who tries out the book's methods and gets poor results, can simply be said to have been using poor judgment. Notice that this lets the methods off the book.

A cynical view is that all this charting is akin to seeing patterns in clouds or stars. The best investment advice vis a vis this book is to spend your money on something else.

I found this very informative and packed with
interesting information and examples to inspire
the reader.
Some of the best points are:
* A mine of detailed information
* Lots of examples from an experienced Forex Trader
* Inspiring, but also warns of pitfalls to avoid.
It is a book well worth adding to your Forex library.

2 out of 5 stars Very basic. Beginners only. Not forex specific at all.......2007-08-09

Sorry that I still have no idea of what the 10 essentials are after I finished it, but as a professional trader I can tell the book is too shallow to be helpful at all, despite the author's outstanding writing skill. Some may argue that I am too demanding to require a book of less than 200 content page to be compleat but I assure you the FX market is a killing field with a casualty rate of over 90% that forgives no mistake nor ignorance. Of course, if you think a lukewarm mix of Candlestick, Fibonacci, Trendline, FA and equity management is good enough, please simply neglect this review. Otherwise,..............

p.s. Despite my low rating of it, below please find my favorite passages for your reference.

A wise, old Indian chief was speaking with his grandson about life, telling him about the internal battle that goes on inside all people. He said, "My son, inside all of us there exists a constant battle between two wolves. One wolf is very evil. It forces you to deal with anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed...............The other wolf is good. It helps you to experience joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility......." The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, "Which wolf wins?" The chief replied, "My son, the one you feed." pg 1

"Anyone wanting to make some money today? Just watch and trade the GBP. The bulls are after a high from several years back and when they get near it and/or take it out and achieve a new high, turn to a 15 min chart and keep your eyes open for an evening star, engulfing bearish candle or tweezer tops. The second one of them appears, go short!" pg 74

Just remember, nothing lasts forever....there will be signs that you will need to pay attention to....you can begin to make the necessary adjustments to either hold onto what you are about to lose or aggressively start taking advantage of getting out of the mess you are in. pg 114

1 out of 5 stars Do not believe the "4" or "5" Star Hype.......2007-07-23

As a former insider at MTI, I can attest to the previous "1" star ratings and support the same with facts. This author's primary business is in education; however, this author doesn't even understand the product of sums. This book is nothing more than an extended table of contents coupled with an exorbitant number of references to his business. The decision to buy this text should be one of prudence. Please review the book physically before buying.

The author is preying on the "ignorant" public that is eager to trade. I would not put is past this author to instruct his own employees/colleagues/friends to write positive reviews (FxAngel, R. Enright).

A few good text recommendations are from CTrader's review that I agree with:
"If you want to know about technical analysis for forex or stocks -which is the same- you can check Jon Murphy, Schwager, or J. Magee.... books
If you are looking for psychology of trading go for Mark Douglas or others."

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-06-04

This is the best book on Forex trading that I read so far. It is more or less a intro to the author's school and company, but it also contains a lot of good basic info in a plain and simple format that a beginner like myself can understand.

1 out of 5 stars hopeless.......2007-05-31

I have to agree with Ctrader (see below, 1 star).
It is unbelievable that a book like that could be published in 2007. There is absolutely nothing new at all. The usage of the patterns is not even well described. The usable content is very basic and limited. It is full of personal experiences or allusion to other stories. Full of advertisement for his MTI.
It does not deliver what is written on the front cover. "The rules for turning patterns into profit" where is that? The title: "The 10 essentials..." What are these 10 things exactly?

I bought that book thanks to the 5 star reviews below (before the 1 star review from Ctrader) since I cannot have a look to books where I live...
The 5 star reviews giving no valuable information seems to bloom very easily and fast for this book!

Book Description

The classic source for the technical analysis discipline now brings readers up to date in techniques and technology
Now, in this second edition of the classic text, expert Thomas Dorsey shows, step-by-step, how to create, maintain, and interpret your own point and figure charts. He explains how you can use your findings to track and forecast market prices and develop an overall investment strategy. Perhaps most importantly, he helps you develop confidence in the market and take decisive action at the appropriate time, rather than reacting after the fact. Dorsey also highlights new developments in the field and incorporates the use of recently developed software to track any market using point and figure methods. Written for both new and experienced P & F chartists, this updated edition of a technical analysis classic brings point and figure charting into the Internet age.
Thomas J. Dorsey (Richmond, VA) is President of Dorsey, Wright & Associates, a registered investment advisory firm that uses point and figure charting as its main source of technical analysis.

2 out of 5 stars Point & Figure Charting for STOCK TRADERS ONLY.......2007-05-03

Thomas Dorsey does a great job at explaining (in the first 50 pages) how the Point & Figure Chart is created, as well as some basic 'forms' that the charts can take. I read some of the reviews of this book thinking that as a Futures/Commodities trader (early stage/beginner) I would learn alot about Point & Figure Charting for Futures/Commodities. I was wrong. There are no more than 3 pages in this book regarding Commodities, and only insofar as they are underlying indicators for stocks that rely on commodity prices. So, if you want to learn about Point and Figure Charting, this is an ok book. There may be others out there that are better, as that aspect of this book served its purpose for me....which is P&F Charting APPEARS to be an excellent methodology for Trend analysis (big picture) for Futures/Commodities. However, if you are a Stock Trader then this book may have much more relevance to you. Not a bad book, just not appropriate for Commodities/Futures Traders.

5 out of 5 stars In Defense of the Presentation.......2006-10-23

I find it hard to accept the reviews I have read about this book having poor explanations of the P&F concept, or that they are available elsewhere. Mr. Dorsey's book is first rate. I read this book when it was first released, and I find myself using it as a reference tool quite often. Mr. Dorsey's explanation of the NYSE Bullish Percent chart and how to use it and the Relative Strength charts in conjuntion with your stock selection is as plainly presented as if you were having a conversation with the man.

When you consider that he also has weekly podcasts that help explain how the P&F charts are used, I consider Mr. Dorsey to be THE authority on the subject of Point&Figure charting and this book is an excellent source for learning how to start P&F analysis.

2 out of 5 stars Technical Analysis De-Mystified - Not.......2005-10-18

The other review on this date (wentraub) is not a book review but some random thoughts on investing. The Dynamic Asset Level Investing model is not even in the book but a paid service from Dorsey's website!!!!

How can Dorsy be one of Wall Street's saviest minds when his is in Virginia?

PnF charting is only one of many tool available to a Technician.

4 out of 5 stars Technical Analysis De-Mystified.......2005-10-18

Technical analysts are becoming an endangered species on Wall Street. Major firms have long favored a fundamental approach emphasizing a nuts and bolts approach to company revenues, use of capital, and innovation. Scores of fundamental analysts closely follow individual sectors of the economy, scour SEC filings, and comment on daily developments pertaining to individual companies. Meanwhile a smaller cadre of 'technicians' churn out charts, graphs, and statistics that follow the ebb and flow of investor capital. Recently two well known full service brokerage firms decimated their already small contingent of technical analysts and another firm let go their star technician.

Academic studies on the efficiency of the markets to digest news and quickly reset the market value of securities have long questioned the value of Wall Street analysts to forecast future prices. If news is unpredictable, by definition, and the prices of securities adjust immediately, what is the point of a forecast. These studies have been particularly harsh on technical analysis. Technical analysis may not have helped its cause with a coded language of triple tops, head and shoulders patterns, Fibonnaci retracements, etc. It all begins to sound more like the Occult than analysis. This book blows away a lot of the smoke.

Tom Dorsey has given us a straight forward (if somewhat breathless) introduction to his method of technical analysis. His X and O charts record trends of buying (demand) and selling (supply) in the market. It is this dynamic imbalance, he contends, that is the primary determinant of value in the marketplace. The tendency for these trends to repeat over time represents the psychology of investors to buy or sell at critical junctures. For Dorsey fundamental analysis is useful in determining what company stocks should be owned. Then it is the role of the technician to determine when to buy and sell. Fundamental analysis identifies good companies. Technical analysis identifies good stocks. Good companies do things well. Good stocks make investors money.

The value of Dorsey's work is to help investors find sectors of the economy and securities that may be due for a reversal of fortune after extended periods of under or out performance. The bottom line is that he has developed a useful toolkit for the investor. A look at his Dynamic Asset Level Investing model [12/2004 - not in this 2001 book] that recommends areas to allocate assets (small capitalization stocks, Latin America, natural resources, energy, etc.) seems prescient just about a year later. Using ETFs (exchange traded funds) to develop a portfolio based on Dorsey's model would have inevitably led investors to a chunk of the best returns available for the period. This book should certainly be read by all investors who want an introduction to technical analysis and a better understanding of one of Wall Street's savviest minds. You may not want to be on the other side of too many of Tom Dorsey's trades!

2 out of 5 stars Bait for online service.......2005-06-25

The book is too wordy - in fact the same information is more concisely presented and available for free at DWA website. To follow the method described you need to become a paying member of DWA. A free 2 week trail is also available at the site. This allows you to findout that to really understand and apply this method you need to take several of the $150 classes that DWA also provides. Also, the online service is really geared towards stock brokers (investment advisors).

Use the online course - its faster, cheaper and better.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars *Probably* useful.......2005-12-21

I found the book to be redundant for my finance class, but the content is well presented. The book serves as back-up for a finance course. The content is more detailed (longer) than in a typical college level lecture, so it's good for you don't understand a concept from the lecture. Information is long-winded but not confusing and attractively presented.

Bottom Line: It's a solid finance book, but you shouldn't need it much if your professor is competent.

4 out of 5 stars JustAProfessor.......2005-08-26

I have used this book in the investment class I teach for 4 years. I have had very little negative feedback from students. Most seem to like it, otherwise, I would have switched books.

Maybe Justablokes problem is he thinks he is reading an economic textbook, but it is actually a financial investment book.

2 out of 5 stars This is one of the worst economics textbooks ever.......2004-04-12

I have to say that this is one of the worst economics textbooks that I have ever read. The font is tiny and reading it strains my eyes. The book is not written in a clear style at all. In fact, I often have to reread paragraphs just to understand what's going on. Sometimes, the authors go into needlessly long and complicated tangents to explain simple concepts. Someone needs to seriously condense and clarify the material in this textbook or else it'll become the bane of every college economics student's existence.

In 24 Essential Lessons for Investment Success, the founder of Investor's Business Daily and author of How to Make Money in Stocks, William O'Neil, distills his 40 years of experience, study, and analysis of the market into a series of lessons about how to buy and sell stocks. O'Neil is neither a pure fundamentalist nor a technician--instead, he advocates blending both approaches, applying fundamental analysis to identifying the best companies and technical analysis to understanding the price actions of those stocks. The lessons cover everything from protecting your investment account (always cut your losses at 8 percent of the purchase price) and basic chart reading (identifying market tops and bottoms) to understanding relative price strength and tips on building a concentrated portfolio. While not absolutely necessary, it helps to have a copy of Investor's Business Daily handy: these lessons were drawn from a series that O'Neil wrote, which frequently mention features unique to that newspaper. 24 Essential Lessons for Investment Success is a easy-to-read, commonsense guide to stock picking that both novices and seasoned investors should find extremely useful. --Harry C. Edwards

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Lessons.......2007-05-14

The author of this book increased his account 20 fold in 26 months and then bought a seat on the New York stock exchange. He studied the top performing stocks from 1953 to present to create his CAN-SLIM method, which has been proven in many independant studies to be one of the best. After his individual success as an investor he founded O' Neal & Co. and uses his companies stock data base to advise top investing firms. This is a credible author who all traders should listen to.

Here are some of the top lessons in this book:
#3 Follow a system rather than emotions.(This takes experience and time)
#6 Relative price strength: A key technical tool (Buy stocks in up-trends close to 52 week highs, these are the stocks with buyers)
#18 Don't try to be a Jack of all trades (Focus on one investment vehicle, be an expert)
#20 Sell Rules (Reset stops on stocks showing a profit so you do not give back all of your profit on a down trend)

Buy this book for 20 more essential lessons. This book will help beginners tremendously and also can be very beneficial for experienced traders and investors to revisit to keep on the right track.

This is a great little book that belongs in every investors/traders library.

3 out of 5 stars Easy Money in 2000.......2007-03-26

Anyone who had read Investors Business Daily will not gain too much from this book since it's mainly a novice walkthru of the daily publication. O'Neil's major concepts are higher highs in enormous volume, double bottom, flat base, and cup with a handle. Even looking at some charts he has in the book in hindsight appear misleading. I think IBD is an excellent resource, but here are my criticisms of this book. It was written during the tech boom. Anyone could have plopped money down and doubled it in a month. Too many times O'Neil brags about making 200% on a stock. He tells how one should never be afraid to jump into a stock with a PE over 100. In 2000 they were prominent, today, extreme rarity. Gee I wonder why. A cup and handle to you may be different to me and besides, by time you really realize it's a cup and handle or double bottom, you're already late to the party. Though I'm not too crazy about his steps for buying a stock, he does a thorough job explaining how he goes about establishing a position. Take this book for what its worth, there's plenty to learn but most of it was only applicable in the late 90's.

2 out of 5 stars Great Advertisement - poor book.......2007-03-22

This book covers a lot of the fundamental basics that other books contain, but the recurring theme throughout is, "If you really want to learn how the market works you should subscribe to my newsletter".

I don't know if the Investor's Business Daily is any good, but certainly the credibility of the author is damaged in my eyes... IBD should have paid me to read this extended advertisement, rather than the other way around.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book For Beginners - In Simple Terms.......2007-02-16

This book is good for beginners that don't know how to invest. They put things in simple terms vs the How To Make Money In Stocks book (although they both have the same information pretty much). I seem to be getting more from this + their website (www.investors.com) than any other resources. William J O'Neil is a GREAT writer and I hope that he keeps updating his books, because I would sure buy them. His books and his website are my BIBLE to invest, although I haven't invested yet as I am still studying charts for further evaluation to make sure that I buy the right stock or stocks that I want to buy.

3 out of 5 stars Good advice, stop trying to sell stuff!.......2006-08-12

The book wasn't the easiest to read, but it gave good ideas for investors to keep in mind when selecting stocks and great tips for when to buy and sell. However the book was overwhelmed with constant advertising for Investors Business Daily. A good third of the book talked about the features of Investors Business Daily and how they could be used with the book. There was a some great info in this book, but the constant references to the magazine were annoying.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nice Guide for Beginners.......2007-06-16

The author writes a nice overview of the entrepreneurial process. It's basically for novices but it does a good job for this audience. The only problem I have with this book is that it is too basic and is therefore non-unique because it is so low-level. Regardless, I must say that for the right audience, it does a fine job over giving the big picture.

If you are advanced or aspire to become advanced, I would recommend "The Startup Company Bible for Entrepreneurs" but only for high-tech entrepreneurs. Even this author has recommended it.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Entrepreneurs.......2007-05-14

Steven gives great illustrations to drive home his insightful advice for entrepreneurs. As he's "been there, done that," we can take his advice to heart in the hopes of becoming a success like him!

5 out of 5 stars Exellent Book.......2007-05-11

Great book for getting ready to open a new business. Would refer to anyone thinking about opening a business.

5 out of 5 stars Brief and to the point.......2007-04-27

This is a delightful little book that contains a wealth of useful and helpful information and ideas on starting a small business and ensuring that it is viable and succesful. The book is well written and easy to follow and interesting to read.

This is a must read for entrepreneurs, particularly budding ones as the information the book provides is very practical and can help you avoid making costly errors. The book covers a wide range of topics including the start-up process, marketing the business on a small budget, cash-flow forecasting, among other things.

The book is an excellent companion for the entrepreneur that is well worth having.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable advice for the budding entrepreneur.......2007-03-04

This book does a terrific job of presenting some of the most important issues entrepreneurs face when embarking on new ventures, touching on topics such as the business plan, funding, team building, and cash flows. Using simple, yet stunningly accurate models of the entrepreneurial process, Steven Gold distills complex subjects into simple, practical, take-away messages. The classification of entrepreneurial personalities (professionals, pragmatists, and inventors) is something I think we can all relate to. I find the metaphor which compares building a new company to making "stone soup" equally compelling. There are countless books out there for budding entrepreneurs, but this one is no fluff. It gets right down to the nuts and bolts so you can concentrate on your business.

Book Description

The market leader, ESSENTIALS OF INVESTMENTS, 4/E is an undergraduate textbook on investment analysis. The authors have eliminated unnecessary mathematical detail and concentrated on the intuition and insights that will be useful to practitioners throughout their careers as new ideas and challenges emerge from the financial marketplace. ESSENTIALS maintains the theme of asset allocation (authors discuss asset pricing and trading then apply these theories to portfolio planning in real-world securities markets that are governed by risk/return relationships). ESSENTIALS also continues to develop modern topics. The major objective in this revision is to maintain the current level in content and coverage, but work on improving the text's accessibility by enhancing presentation, pedagogy, and design.

1 out of 5 stars not what I wanted.......2007-04-03

Careful with this item¡¡ This is not a text book. In my opinion, Amazon doesn't provide enough information about this book, so it might make you make a mistake.

1 out of 5 stars don't buy this book.......2007-01-24

This isn't a textbook and a study guide! only some key word explain in the left hand side and the right hand side is blank! Don't buy this 'outline' if you only want buy a textbook.

2 out of 5 stars Very hard to read.......2003-02-11

This book is widely used in finance courses in my university, a puzzling fact because books should rarely sell if they're hard to read. The bookfs authors introduce a broad array of investment theories and discoveries. Thatfs a plus. But their wordy sentences, which grow wordier and harder to follow as they delve into each chapterfs key concepts, offset the plus. The authorsf inconsistent use of terminology is another drawback. As I move on to later chapters, I feel as if the authors were growing more verbose. That benefits no readers, given the later chapters discussing higher-level concepts.
When they revise this book for the next edition, they should hire proofreaders, journalists if possible. They care about readers and can help rewrite the entire book into a readable piece that helps students instead of confusing them.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent intro to Investment theory.......2000-12-17

I studied the entire book for my Investment Management course at Stellenbosch University in South Africa and found it very complete from the point of view of the "novice" investor and/or student. The book is not written for the intermediate or expert investor, but for an introductory course in Investment management it did the trick.

5 out of 5 stars Essentials of Investments.......1999-12-29

This is a clearly written book with excellent visual aids. I especially liked the concept checks and the current events boxes. The sample questions from CFA exams were particularly helpful. On whole the book does an exceptional job of explaining difficult subject matter. I'd even recommend this book to the 'lay' reader.

Praise for The ESSENTIALS OF TRADING

"This is the book I wish I had when I began a training program for new traders. John's familiarity with trading and traders is evident in this text. His incorporation of exercises and use of examples bring topics to life, maintaining the interest of even the most hyperactive traders."
—Brett N. Steenbarger, PhD, author of The Psychology of Trading

"The Essentials of Trading masterfully teaches the novice how to conceptualize, implement, and manage the important fundamentals that form the building blocks of successful trading. Because the book and its examples have been classroom tested at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, the pace of presentation is ideal for a full or partial classroom exposure to Internet-based trading. The book is highly recommended as a viable academic teaching tool, and equally so for the developing nonstudent practitioner."
—Dr. Gordon H. Dash Jr. Associate Professor of Finance, University of Rhode Island

"As the founder of a women's entrepreneurial networking organization, one of the most essential messages I relay to our members is the importance of understanding and managing their own personal and professional finances. John Forman's book is one that I highly recommend to all our members, because of its clear explanations and teaching style that will allow any novice to develop a solid understanding of the world of finance and investment trading."
—Sherry Thacker, President and Founder, WENS Inc.

1 out of 5 stars Where is the book?.......2007-08-23

I ordered this book 7/17/07 and here it is, 8/23/07 (more than a whole month later) and still, I have not recieved this book. I find that the "warehouse deals" thing that amazon offeres is a joke. I've e-mailed them over 4 times to find out where the book is or when it is going to arrive and I have not heard back from them once.

Don't buy from warehouse deals!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for New Traders.......2006-09-10

I'm new in trading and I've spent time and money to find books teaching the real stuff of trading. This book, as the title says, describes all the essentials you need to consider when you want to start trading. It covers the plan, the system, the testing, and the final application. It opens up my mind to view trading as a real challengr both interllectually and mentally.

However, I hope it can put more resorces in developing and testing systems.

5 out of 5 stars Designed for the Individual Trader.......2006-06-07

Trading in the stock, foreign exchange, or other markets used to be a game played only by the experts on Wall Street or at a minimum sitting in a brokers office watching the ticker go buy. News dissemination was slow and poor. All of this has changed. The web now allows everyone the world over instant access to the same information and instant access to on line trading.

This book starts with the very beginning, opening a trading account. From there he moves to the development of a trading plan and tracking that plan using the 'demo' or test account at an on-line traders. The development of a plan that suits your needs, your own level of risk. In describing how to create your own plan, he goes over the primary ways used by the pros to analyze markets: Fundamental, Quantitative or Technical Analysis. Strangely enough, he doesn't seem to have a favorite as most authors do.

On the whole, you couldn't ask for a better introductory to the subject.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Deal.......2006-05-04

This book realistically describes what you need to know and what you need to do to trade successfully. I would recommend it to all aspiring traders. It provides the knowledge base and perspective that good traders develop through years of experience. A great book for both new and established traders.

5 out of 5 stars An Essential Resource for Developing Traders.......2006-04-23

Rarely does a week go by in which someone in the trading world does not ask me to endorse their website, product, or publication. I politely decline 90% or more of the time. The sad truth is that many trading texts are written by individuals who are not truly experts in their domains. When I had the opportunity to review John Forman's book "The Essentials of Trading" prior to its release, I not only gave it my endorsement, but consented to write its Foreword. I would only do that for an author who knows his stuff and for a work that I am proud to be associated with.

What John has accomplished is, to my mind, the best general-purpose introduction to trading I have yet encountered. Having run a training program for aspiring professional traders at a proprietary trading firm, I know the questions that new traders ask and the lessons they need to learn. John has clearly addressed these in "The Essentials of Trading". He begins with trading mechanics: the nuts and bolts of executing and managing a trade. His discussion is accompanied by real examples, with screen shots of order tickets and trading screens. This is no academic, theoretical treatise, but a hands-on introduction to trading basics.

Later chapters take up the important topics of trading plans and risk management, followed by methods for analyzing markets and designing, testing, and optimizing trading systems. Once again, practical examples abound, with clear illustrations of actual markets, positions, and systems. A nice touch are the text boxes throughout the book highlighting key concepts. Many of these are comments from traders and the lessons they've learned.

Overall, I found John's writing to be clear and concise. He has served as content editor for the Trade2Win community site, and his writing experience shows. When I endorsed the book, I said that it was the text I wished I had when I started my training program. I stand by that comment: this is a great introduction to the trading world.

Are there weaknesses to the book? Those will depend on readers' interests. Two full chapters are devoted to trading systems, but only part of a chapter to technical analysis. Valuable insights regarding trading psychology are scattered through the text, but there is no dedicated chapter to the topic. Conversely, the bonus sample trading system included in the appendix is worth the price of the text alone, providing an illuminating example of a trading methodology.

In sum, I highly recommend "The Essentials of Trading" for new and developing traders. From execution to planning to risk management to market analysis, it covers the basics in a clear, engaging style.

Book Description

Effective management of taxable accounts and portfolios rarely gets the attention it deserves from investment managers and advisers, often leaving investors with a larger-than-necessary tax bite. Tax-Aware Investment Management details new research, new analytic tools, and new thinking that can change that. This book punctures received wisdom and dispels misconceptions about how to account for tax effects; how to allocate assets; how and when to buy, sell, and rebalance; and how to communicate with clients and with other professionals involved in managing their assets. Douglas Rogers, widely considered the authority in this growing field, details the trading strategies and fund evaluation criteria essential to the task and presents critical considerations for investment managers. He also covers the expanding area of separate accounts.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Tax Aware Investing doesn't need to be an oxymoron.......2007-07-10

I have yet to meet a prudent investor that thinks the government would do a better job of spending the money that the investor has accumulated, than they would do spending it themselves.

Doug Rogers' Tax-Aware Investment Management guide is timely. Doug gives you questions to ask your advisor. He provides a historical prospective while injecting humor. Doug even synthesizes the implications of taxation on investment results in a readable fashion.

Wall Street serves institutions (they live in world of relative "better than the benchmark or at least awfully darn close to it so they can keep their job" performance evaluation.

Private clients are often sold what institutions bought 5 or 10 years ago. The individual investor's best interests would be better served by thinking about this topic before, during and after they invest. You can only spend what you have after tax, after fee. I suggest you invest some time in thinking about the wisdom that Doug shares.

5 out of 5 stars Importance of Tax Aware Investing Brought to the Forefront.......2006-03-08

This book could/should be used as a handbook for investment professionals considering tax aware investing. Doug has compiled years of research, insight and practice into a concise "manual" to shed some light on this complicated, and ever-changing aspect of investment management. Billions of dollars are needlessly lost each year from investors' portfolios because investment professionals fail to consider the impact of taxes when constructing and managing investment portfolios.

The book is very well written and organized. Hopefully, more people will realize the importance of taxes on portfolio performance and be drawn to firm's who can add value by having the knowledge and the ability to "play the game". This is especially true in a low return environment where the tax burden can have a meaningful impact in overall returns.
